Nvidia's stock market value has surged $191 billion since Facebook's capital expenditure announcement on October 25. (File) Nvidia Corp on Tuesday released a set of tools for software developers aimed at helping them create a “metaverse” of three-dimensional virtual worlds – and use a lot more computing power from Nvidia’s chips in the process. At the Santa Clara, California, company’s annual technology conference, Nvidia released Omniverse Enterprise, which will start at $9,000 per year and be sold by partners such as Dell Technologies and Lenovo Group Ltd, which build powerful computing systems with Nvidia chips for corporate customers. The Omniverse tools help various apps used to create three-dimensional worlds, such as software from Adobe Inc, work better together while running on chips made by Nvidia. Also Read |Meet Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090, World’s first 8K Gaming GPU In an interview with Reuters, Richard Kerris, vice president of the Omniverse platform at Nvidia, called it “the plumbing of the virtual worlds. That’s what we’ve built. And that’s what we’re building with all of these partners.” But right now, most of those worlds are far from fruition and the tools are mostly being used by businesses. Kerris told Reuters that Nvidia worked with more than 700 companies to test and develop the software, including firms like telecommunications equipment maker Ericsson, which used the software to create a “digital twin” of a city that it used to test cell phone signal coverage before rolling out physical trucks to install real-world antennas. Top Tech News Now Noise ColorFit Ultra review: Best smartwatch under Rs 5,000? Sonos Roam review: Pure sound in your hands Pantone Validated displays: What they are and do you need them? CLICK HERE FOR MORE Earlier this month, Wells Fargo analyst Aaron Rakers wrote that software and other tools for creating virtual worlds could be a $10 billion market opportunity for Nvidia over the next five years – especially as firms like Meta Platforms Inc, the firm formerly known as Facebook, entice people to spend more time in what it calls the metaverse. Nvidia’s stock market value has surged $191 billion since Facebook’s capital expenditure announcement on Oct. 25, a two-week gain that is nearly as large as rival Intel’s entire market capitalization of $209 billion.

In context: In addition to the global chip crisis, logistical issues caused by the pandemic, and the rising value of crypto, another factor that has seen the price of graphics cards rise to obscene heights are Trump-era tariffs placed on Chinese-made goods. To address the latter problem, Nvidia and Zotac are urging the Biden administration to make cards exempt from this extra cost. PCMag reports that the companies made the request to the US Trade Representative’s (USTR) office, which is considering reinstating exemptions on some items covered by the tariffs. Nvidia specifically cited the lack of GPU manufacturing outside of China, meaning the cards are subject to a 25% import tariff. “The products are not manufactured in the US and in only limited amounts in Taiwan. Efforts to create new capacity in countries that presently do not manufacture such products (such as the US and Vietnam) were unsuccessful and were severely hampered by the fallout from COVID-19,” Nvidia said. Nvidia continued to emphasize the pandemic’s effect on the GPU industry. "The ability to move the supply chain and/or increase volume in other countries was negatively impacted by COVID-19 in terms of the severe constraints in cargo/air freight capacity, the ability to operate facilities in people-intensive manufacturing, and the ability to find and hire qualified employees trained in such manufacturing," it added. Will these become cheaper if Zotac gets its wish? Zotac told the agency that although it has been working with a contract manufacturer in Taiwan to build its products, it still relies on China to turn raw materials into components, noting that it cannot find alternative sources. HP is another company that noted China’s importance as the primary source of imports. “The products HP sources are not currently produced elsewhere at sufficient capacity, quality, and compatibility needed,” it told the USTR. Other tech giants, including Apple, Google, and Intel, have also filed comments urging the USTR to make certain Chinse-manufactured electronic goods exempt from tariffs. The decision on whether to make an item exempt will depend on whether the product remains available exclusively in China, and “whether or not reinstating the exclusion will impact or result in severe economic harm to the commenter or other US interests, including the impact on small businesses, employment, manufacturing output, and critical supply chains in the United States," the USTR said. Even if the tariffs are lifted, we don’t know when, or if, it will be reflected in the cards' retail prices. But it’s certainly something we could use right now, especially as the Radeon RX 6000 line is set to become even more expensive.

Electronic Arts have shaken up how it will be approaching the Battlefield franchise in the future, with the intent now to create a “connected Battlefield universe.” The publisher announced that it would be making some major changes to its development structure on Thursday, with the biggest being the creation of a Battlefield universe that will act as a bridge across a variety of games and other modes, with different development studios partnering together along way. MORE: The Matrix Awakens ‘Experience’ Appears on PlayStation Backend Alongside the shake-up, DICE GM Oskar Gabrielson is leaving the company to pursue a new endeavor outside of Electronic Arts. In his place, Respawn Entertainment’s Vince Zampella will take on a bigger role as the boss of the Battlefield franchise in addition to overseeing Apex Legends and whatever else Respawn is creating. Marcus Lehto, with the studio he announced in October, will focus on incorporating more storytelling into the world of Battlefield after helping with Battlefield 2042 in the “immediate future.” Finally, Ripple Effect, the developer of Battlefield 2042‘s Portal Mode, will begin developing “a new Battlefield experience” within the current game. Speaking to GameSpot, Zampella said that the new strategy is more about making “interconnected” worlds for players and give players more to experience and that EA plans to have its Battlefield teams “grow significantly,” which may include a free-to-play game. “This is an ‘And’ strategy in many ways,” Zampella said. “We will continue to evolve and grow Battlefield 2042, and we’ll explore new kinds of experiences and business models along the way that we can add to that foundation to provide an awesome array of experiences for our players. In this universe, the world is interconnected with shared characters and narrative. This universe is also built with our community as we harness the power of Portal and user generated content that puts creativity in the hands of our players.” MORE: How the Shadow the Hedgehog Game Gave Noob Saibot His Voice in Mortal Kombat 11 The move seems to be similar to what Activision has been doing with the Call of Duty franchise as of late, with all of its Call of Duty developers working together to create shared experiences while still releasing yearly games. The recently released Call of Duty: Vanguard was a standalone game, but its weapons — as well as the weapons from the previously released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare — are available in the Call of Duty Warzone battle royale mode. It’s currently unclear what the future of the Battlefield franchise looks like, but it does seem like EA is committed to trying anything to fix the series. After its launch in November, Battlefield 2042 players were very critical of the game, noting that it launched without many core Battlefield features and an acceptable level of polish. DICE has slowly been putting out updates to address some of these criticisms. However, EA COO Laura Miele said 2042 is “trending in the right direction.” This suite of Battlefield news also further puts a damper on any hopes for Star Wars Battlefront 3 as a recent insider report stated that EA rejected said pitch due to licensing costs. With EA’s new push toward Battlefield, it’s easy to see how an outside license might not be in its interest, especially after the reception to its last two Battlefront games.

A hot potato: Microsoft has been more aggressive than usual in its efforts to push people onto Edge, and now it's taking things a step further by using popups that throw shade at its browser rival whenever someone visits the Chrome download page. Neowin reports that when someone attempts to download Chrome from within Edge, they’re met with several popups extolling the virtues of Microsoft’s browser over Google’s. “Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with the added trust of Microsoft,” reads one. Another popup states, “That browser is so 2008! Do you know what’s new? Microsoft Edge,” which has a bit of a ‘How do you do, fellow kids’ feel to it. “‘I hate saving money,’ said no one ever. Microsoft Edge is the best browser for online shopping,” reads another. Chrome has 64% share of the browser market Not everyone is seeing these messages—this writer didn’t—but there are plenty of reports of them being encountered by Windows 11 and Windows 10 users. They’re native to Microsoft's browser, unlike similar messages Google shows within web pages that try to encourage Edge users to switch to Chrome. News of the popups comes just after Microsoft integrated a buy now, pay later app into Edge, which prompted the kind of response from users one would expect. The Redmond company recently faced criticism over making the switch from Edge to another browser more difficult in Windows 11. There was also the tool that redirected Edge links in Windows 11 that Microsoft blocked. Google isn’t a stranger to using these sorts of tactics, either. In addition to the aforementioned ‘Google recommends using Chrome’ prompts, last year it showed a message that read “Google recommends switching to Chrome to use extensions securely” whenever Edge users visited the Chrome Web Store, though it was quickly removed.

Confirmed: Though we're already well into the life cycle of RTX 30-series cards, rumors have been floating around that suggest Nvidia is working on a new, 12GB 2060 model. With next-gen titles increasing texture sizes substantially, an affordable, RT-ready card with twice the VRAM of its predecessor is a pretty appealing notion to many. However, the card hadn't been confirmed officially by Nvidia... until now. In today's Game Ready Driver release notes, for driver version 497.09 WHQL, Nvidia distinctly mentions adding support for what it calls the "GeForce RTX 2060 12GB." Upon first glance, it might seem odd that the company didn't attach the "Super" moniker to this card. After all, all signs point to the specs lining up closely with the 8GB 2060 Super rather than the older 6GB 2060. It will likely have the same number of CUDA, RT, and Tensor cores, and the boost clock is also predicted to be identical. However, there are still differences, according to Videocardz. Specifically, the 2060 12GB will ship with a 192-bit memory bus and 336 GB/s memory bandwidth, which is what the base 2060 had. For contrast, the 2060 Super has a 256-bit bus and 448 GB/s of memory bandwidth. A few things are still unclear at the moment, though. We aren't sure precisely when the card will release -- rumors point toward December 7 -- nor do we know how much it will cost. We wouldn't expect an MSRP too different from the 2060 Super, which sat right at the $400 mark. Either way, we probably won't be waiting long for answers to these unknowns. Presumably, Nvidia wouldn't list it as a newly-supported device if a release date isn't on the horizon. Of course, that assumes the company didn't mistakenly mention the 2060 in its latest GRD changelog, which is possible. Ordinarily, the re-release of what is effectively a last-gen card with some extra VRAM might not be cause for so much buzz. However, the PC hardware market is in terrible shape right now, with crypto miners and bot-equipped scalpers buying up every GPU they can get their hands on in bulk. As such, almost every new card launch is worth paying attention to for ordinary gamers.

Titanfall fans have been through a lot. The servers for the two games been repeatedly hacked over the years, rendering them nearly unplayable. Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment have also let the series sit untouched since 2016’s Titanfall 2 and as the two parties favor creating more content for Apex Legends. Respawn has put out a statement directly to Titanfall fans, explaining that the first game will be pulled from storefronts and subscription services. However, the update came with a drop of good news as the studio also said the “incredible universe will continue.” A note about Titanfall. pic.twitter.com/Ew232HkUIo — Respawn (@Respawn) December 1, 2021 Respawn put out the note on its Twitter account. The note explains how much the series means to the team before it then says that the original Titanfall will be pulled from online storefronts today and from EA Play on March 1, 2022. The servers will stay online so it will theoretically playable for the foreseeable future. Titanfall 2 was not mentioned and is, for now, safe from any server shutdowns or delistings. MORE: Insomniac’s Spider-Man Is Impossible to Ignore While Playing Avengers’ Spidey The next paragraph talked more about the future of the series. Respawn didn’t commit to a sequel, but strongly implied that something related to Titanfall was coming. “Rest assured, Titanfall is core to Respawn’s DNA and this incredible universe will continue. Today in Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends, and in the future. This franchise is a north star for the caliber of experiences we will continue to create here at Respawn.” MORE: PlayStation Plus December 2021 Lineup Features a Soulslike, DC Title, & a Slice of a PS5 Launch Game This news comes after Jason Garza, Respawn’s community manager, shot down reports of Titanfall 3. In a livestream, he stated that there was “nothing in the works.” “We don’t have anything in [the] works,” he said. “There’s nothing. There’s nothing there. We’ve got too many other games in the works right now.” The studio then tweeted soon after that Titanfall was at the “very core” of its DNA and left the tweet on a ponderous question wondering what the future would hold. While old games get taken off storefronts, this specific delisting likely has to do with the rampant hacking that has infected Respawn’s games, particularly the first Titanfall. Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends have also seen their share of hacking and cyber attacks, but given how the former still has a highly acclaimed single-player campaign and the latter is still ongoing and playable for the most part, cutting off an older, multiplayer-focused title with sketchy online capabilities probably made it an easy target to delist.
