  1. Joe Biden turns 80 years old Sunday. The 46th president of the United States, who, at 78, entered office as the oldest candidate to be elected, now becomes the only sitting president to celebrate his 80th birthday while in power. Biden's age expects to be a continued talking point for the rest of his term, especially in the context of him potentially running for office again in 2024. There's nothing in the U.S. Constitution barring someone from running because of old age – Article II only lists a minimum age of 35 years old. On average, presidents are sworn in at 55 years old, according to POTUS.com. Politics:Do Republicans have to nominate Trump for president in 2024? Here's what to know Who is Hakeem Jeffries? Born Nov. 20, 1942, Joe Biden became the 46th president in January 2021, earning him the title of oldest president in U.S. history. Biden, who was 78 when he took the oath of office, has received sharp criticism throughout his administration from people who have questioned his age's impact on presidential performance. Donald Trump, born June 14, 1946, was 70 years and 220 days when he took office as the 45th president in January 2017. Morocco has bolstered its security cooperation with Qatar ahead of the world cup. In May, Morocco’s General Director of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST) held a series of meetings with high-ranking Qatari officials after the Gulf Country sought Moroccan security expertise for the FIFA World Cup. Over the same month, Morocco sent a team of cybersecurity experts to Qatar to help with securing the event and Hammouchi became the first foreign senior security official to visit the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar, where the final game of the 2022 World Cup is set to take place. Morocco even announced in June that it is dispatching “several thousand” police officers to the Gulf nation to assist in reinforcing security for the football event, Africa-oriented magazine Jeune Afrique reported. 3. FTX has appointed Perella Weinberg Partners LP as its lead investment bank to help with the sale process, subject to court approval. Collapsed crypto exchange FTX said on Saturday it has launched a strategic review of its global assets and is preparing for the sale or reorganisation of some businesses. FTX, along with about 101 affiliated firms, also sought court relief to allow the operation of a new global cash management system and payment to its critical vendors. The exchange and its affiliates filed for bankruptcy in Delaware on November 11 in one of the highest-profile crypto blowups, leaving an estimated 1 million customers and other investors facing total losses in the billions of dollars. FTX in a court filing on Saturday asked for permission to pay prepetition claims of up to $9.3 million (nearly Rs. 75 crore) to its critical vendors after an interim order and up to $17.5 million (nearly Rs. 140 crore) after the entry of the final order. The exchange said that if it fails to receive the requested court relief, it will result in "immediate and irreparable harm" to its businesses. "Based on our review over the past week, we are pleased to learn that many regulated or licensed subsidiaries of FTX, within and outside of the United States, have solvent balance sheets, responsible management and valuable franchises," FTX's new Chief Executive Officer John Ray said. The company has appointed Perella Weinberg Partners LP as its lead investment bank to help with the sale process, subject to court approval. "I respectfully ask all of our employees, vendors, customers, regulators and government stakeholders to be patient with us as we put in place the arrangements that corporate governance failures at FTX prevented us from putting in place prior to filing our chapter 11 cases," Ray said. link : https://www.gadgets360.com/cryptocurrency/news/ftx-launches-strategic-review-seeks-court-relied-to-pay-critical-vendors-3535652
  4. Apple released tvOS 16.1 recently with a few new features and under-the-hood improvements. While the new additions are more than welcome, the new software version is causing Apple TV models with 128GB of storage to restrict 64GB of capacity. Scroll down to read more details on the subject. tvOS 16.1 Bug Identifies the 128GB Apple TV as 64GB As mentioned earlier, a tvOS 16.1 bug is causing Apple TV models with 128GB of storage to virtually run out of memory as soon as a user spends 64GB of space. The bug was discovered by FlatpanelsHD, which makes users question if they have only 64GB of storage on their Apple TV. Once a user crosses the 64GB memory mark, they are presented with a message that reads: Upon testing, the source suggests that Apple has not fixed the storage bug in its latest tvOS 16.2 beta. As a short-term solution, users can queue their downloads until the limit crosses the virtual 64GB mark. Apple has not shared its side of the story as of now, but we will let you guys know as soon as further details are available. Apple will potentially fix the issue in the upcoming update, so be sure to stick around. However, the exact release date for the next release is not known at this stage, and whether Apple will fix the issue in the subsequent update. The latest Apple TV underwent a massive upgrade as it now features the A15 Bionic chip for enhanced CPU and GPU performance. You can check out more details on the new Apple TV in our announcement post. We will keep you guys updated on the latest, so be sure to stick around. 5. I have something very interesting for our readers today. We were one of the first publications to bring you details about NVIDIA's RTX 30 series mobility lineup and today we received information from the same source about NVIDIA's RTX 40 mobility series graphics cards. To avoid compromising our source through persistent digital watermarks or even the slide layout being traced, we have recreated the slide in good ol' Excel with all relevant information retained. NVIDIA RTX 40 Mobility Series GPUs To Be Announced On 3rd January 2023 Before we begin, I want to point out that while all of us can channel the black leather jacket, at great personal cost I might add, only Jensen can truly wield it. This means that while the dates I have are pretty much set in stone right now, there is absolutely nothing stopping him from snapping his fingers and moving these around - so keep that in mind as you read. With that boilerplate out of the way, here is the bottom line: NVIDIA's RTX 40 series GPUs are expected to bring a performance improvement of roughly 30% over their older generation counterparts. NVIDIA has also made a point of noting that the RTX 4070 mobility will beat the RTX 3080 Ti by 15% - which is great news for gamers. NVIDIA will be launching the following GPUs at CES: RTX 4080 Ti/4090 Mobility with 16GB vRAM, RTX 4080 Mobility with 12GB vRAM, RTX 4070 Mobility with 8GB vRAM, RTX 4060 Mobility with 8GB vRAM, RTX 4050 Mobility with 6GB vRAM and an RTX 3050 with 6GB vRAM. Keep in mind the exact nomenclature could change but the underlying devices ie the GN21-X9, GN21-X6, GN21-X4, GN21-X2 and the RTX 3050 6GB will remain the same. The flagship GPU in the benchmark slide, ie the RTX 4080 Ti (GN21-X11), is a bit of an odd one because we do not see it listed in a separate announcement slide (but do see an RTX 4090 mobility) and also not in the product roadmaps that the company shared with its partners (we do see a RTX 4090 mobility there as well). I am unsure if this means that the RTX 4090 in the announcement documents and product roadmap is the RTX 4080 Ti from the benchmarks renamed (or vice versa) or a different SKU altogether. The NVIDIA RTX 40 series product announcement is currently scheduled to happen on January 3, 2023, 9 AM Pacific. Press will be seeded with the RTX 4080 mobility and the GN21-X11 (whatever NVIDIA decides to call it) first in early-February (followed by the rest of the mobility SKUs) and the reviews and product launches will happen by mid-February 2023 at the most. According to the product roadmap, we are seeing a lot of SKUs, getting announced in January, that are coupled with Intel's upcoming Raptor Lake-H CPU series. This means that Intel will also be announcing its Raptor Lake-H mobility CPU series at CES and the NVIDIA RTX 40 / Raptor Lake-H combo laptops will be among the first to market by the end of January/early February. link: https://wccftech.com/nvidia-rtx-40-mobility-series-gpus-detailed-30-performance-gain-over-last-generation-launch-date-and-more/

  11. Stay grounded Fans of cloud gaming might come crashing back to earth following the news from CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer that Microsoft has shelved plans for an Xbox streaming stick. The long-discussed Xbox streaming stick, codenamed Keystone, is no longer a viable option from either a production and utility standpoint, “It was more expensive than we wanted it to be when we actually built it out with the hardware that we had inside,” Spencer told The Verge(opens in new tab). He cited the broader impact of the cost-of-living crisis on consumer habits as one of the deciding factors behind Keystone’s indefinite hiatus – which makes sense, especially as we brace ourselves for the possible Xbox price hikes coming in the new year. However, those who were looking forward to the cloud-only device aren’t going to be left out in the cold this winter. There are plenty of alternatives that won’t cost you (or Microsoft) the earth. The cloud-streaming service, which is available on smartphones and smart TVs alike, has garnered over 20 million players(opens in new tab) to date. It provides users of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate with an easy, portable, totally online way to enjoy their subscription from anywhere in the world, and comes as part of your payment of $14.99 / £20.99 / AU$15.98 a month The Xbox streaming stick gives you an easy way to take your Xbox Game Pass library with you when you travel. While you can stream games through Samsung Gaming Hub to modern smart TVs, the service doesn't work on older devices. With a streaming stick, you could plug the dongle into any TV with an HDMI port, connect to the WiFi and access the Game Pass catalog. However, cloud gaming still has notable drawbacks over native play. If your internet connection isn’t strong then you will face graphical glitches, buffering, and delays between your inputs to the gamepad and the action on screen. And, even if your internet is perfect, you won’t be playing at the 4K resolutions you get on Xbox Series X. So, to be attractive, the Xbox streaming stick has to be significantly more affordable than a current-gen console, like the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. And, considering cloud gaming is available on the Xbox One, too, the streaming stick would be competing with that generation of hardware, too. It appears Microsoft couldn’t get the price of the hardware down low enough to make it competitive. According to The Verge, Microsoft was aiming for $129 (£110, AU$190) or less but the team struggled to get it below a $299 package. That’s why “We decided to focus that team’s effort on delivering the smart TV streaming app,” Spencer explained. At another point in the interview, Spencer talked about the lengths Microsoft is going to support gamers in the cost of living crisis, and clearly, an exorbitantly expensive streaming stick runs counter to those plans. Project Keystone may be revived in the future, but for the moment, Microsoft’s attentions are elsewhere. link: https://www.techradar.com/news/xbox-keystone-microsofts-cloud-gaming-console-is-years-away
  12. The mobile character collecting game is adding a new face to its roster, as well as new game modes. After its release in August, mobile game The Walking Dead: All Stars has dropped its first big update, introducing the Headhunting system, a new PVP mode called Last Man Standing, and a new character, Annie, who fights alongside her hawk Phoenix. While some of All Stars' characters are taken directly from the comics, others, like Annie, are designed solely for the game. Annie is a neutral aligned character, who has a special bond with her hawk, Phoenix, and also boasts mystical powers. Annie can direct Phoenix to provoke enemies in battle, and can heal allies with medicinal herbs. The new update also introduces Headhunting, a new system players can use to recruit allies. The press release says players can use the Headhunting system to acquire characters "from various alignments--from mythical overseers to vicious predators." A new elite PVP mode is also being added to the game. Named Last Man Standing, the new league will only be open to top players from Frontier battles, requiring players to rank between 1 and 10. Last Man Standing competitors will have to "battle every single rival in the league to make it to the finals." All Stars will also be running limited time events, such as the Town Management bingo-style event offering rewards that can be put towards character growth, with players who complete all the bingo games unlocking a free epic-tier character. Limited "Inventory Clearance and Growth Support" events will also be starting from October 4, giving players more chances to earn extra rewards. The Walking Dead: All Stars is a character collection RPG based on The Walking Dead comics, which is free to play now on Android or iOS. link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-walking-dead-all-stars-gets-its-first-major-update-including-a-new-character/1100-6507901/
  13. Even if they've already bought it. Call of Duty: Warzone 2 has a bug that is locking players out of the free-to-play game unless they purchase Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. This is slightly confusing: Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 share the same client launcher, but are distinct products, and players should be able to download Warzone 2 and play it without having purchased Modern Warfare 2. The problem appears to be widespread, and in most cases seems to occur after players have played several matches and try to start another from the menus. At this point a pop-up window appears saying "Purchase Modern Warfare 2 to have access to everything" and the game won't start. This appears to be happening across several playlists, and restarting the game doesn't help. "Since yesterday I played probably around 6 Warzone 2.0 matches with no problem (finished my last match a few minutes ago)," wrote Unf0cused. "Now when I try to play it, when I click Battle Royale Solos I get the "Purchase Modern Warfare II to have access to everything" window (I've also tried the other BR variants with the same result)." Players have been able to work out ways around certain Warzone 2 glitches like the social feed not working (which is now fixed) but this appears to be a hard block at the moment. It is certainly unintentional, because it has also been locking out players who have already purchased Modern Warfare 2. The Warzone 2 trello board contains no mention of this particular glitch, though it does note that the 'play again' button has been temporarily disabled which may have something to do with it, nor has there been any acknowledgement from other official channels. Warzone 2 just pushed a patch live for a bug that was preventing players from partying up, so it looks like the fix may have had unintended consequences. link: https://www.pcgamer.com/call-of-duty-Warzone-2-is-locking-players-out-and-asking-them-to-buy-Modern-Warfare-2/
  14. The crucial judgement on the Autumn Statement will be does what we heard from Chancellor Jeremy Hunt on Thursday amount to making a bad situation a little less bad or does it make it worse? Here's the problem for the government: even if a set of ideas makes a grim situation a little less grim, it is still a grim situation. And it's likely ministers will get the blame for that. The coming political argument will be all about who is judged to be the competent and trustworthy stewards of very, very difficult times. Here are a few things that stood out for me from the various interviews on Friday morning: Labour accept the size of the financial "black hole" set out by the Office for Budget Responsibility. So the terms of trade between the Conservatives and Labour on this match up. But then there are the policy choice differences between them, and the other parties. Follow live: Hunt denies tax rise raid on working people Chancellor defends tax rises for middle earners Autumn Statement 2022: Key points at-a-glance Take one example: Labour would go after so-called non doms, Mr Hunt told BBC Radio 4's Today programme he has chosen not to. Then there is income tax. The government chose to make the best paid pay more. And they chose that, over time, more people should pay income tax and pay more of it. That is the consequence of freezing the levels, the thresholds, at which you start paying it or pay more, as earnings increase over time. Brexit agreement Labour, meanwhile, are determined to say, for now at least, as little about income tax as possible. Have a watch here of a little clip from the latest BBC Newscast, where I tried, and failed, to get the Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves to set out her instincts on income tax. You have to wonder how long that position of saying nothing on income tax will hold. One other thing: Brexit. Neither the Conservatives nor Labour want to fundamentally alter the UK's relationship with the EU. Jeremy Hunt said on Today that "unfettered trade" was "very beneficial" to growth but rejoining the EU single market would not be "the right way to boost growth" because voters had demanded Brexit in order to get rid of freedom of movement, unlimited migration from and to the EU. In other words, he appeared to tacitly acknowledge rejoining the single market would help with growth, but it was politically unpalatable. And Labour agree - they don't want to reopen the argument about the single market or the customs union, the two big economic structures of the EU. Cuts or not? Instead, Rachel Reeves said there were other elements of the Brexit deal "we can fix" as she sees it - pointing to a veterinary agreement with Brussels and the mutual recognition of professional qualifications, for example. And finally, a word about cuts. When is a cut a cut, and when isn't it a cut? The following thoughts come courtesy of Peter Barnes, the BBC's senior political analyst. The Autumn Statement set out a plan for the government to generate £55bn from a combination of tax rises and spending less than they had planned to. So, by the year 2027-28 the overall effect of the policy decisions announced, excluding energy, is expected to be a net gain to the Treasury of £55bn. That's made up of £30bn from spending policy decisions and £25bn from tax policy decisions. The £30bn squeeze in public spending is a cut compared to what had previously been planned. It is not a cut compared to current levels of spending. As the chancellor said: "Overall spending in public services will continue to rise, in real terms, for the next five years". But it will rise less quickly than planned from 2025-26, so the Treasury is saving money compared to what was expected. It's also true that the very limited growth in overall public spending above inflation will almost certainly mean actual cuts for many departments. Defence and overseas development spending are protected, and it seems inevitable that health will continue to eat up a disproportionate share of the extra money. So that means real term cuts compared to current levels of spending elsewhere. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-63676931
  15. Researchers in Spain have unearthed a never-before-seen species of ancient marine turtle, the largest of its kind ever uncovered in Europe. Paleontologists have unearthed an extinct, never-before-seen species of giant sea turtle in Spain. The titanic turtle likely had a body length of around 12.3 feet (3.7 meters) — more than double the size of modern marine turtles — and is the largest turtle species ever uncovered in Europe. The new species, which researchers have named Leviathanochelys aenigmatica, was identified from a complete pelvis fossil and fragments of fossilized shell uncovered between 2016 and 2021 at the Cal Torrades locality in northeastern Spain, researchers said in a statement(opens in new tab). The enormous turtle likely cruised around Europe's ancient oceans between 83.6 and 72.1 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period (145 million to 66 million years ago). L. aenigmatica is just over twice the size of the largest living marine turtles, leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea), which can reach up to 5.9 feet (1.8 m) long. However, the newly found gigantic turtle falls just short of the record set by the world's largest-ever turtle, the extinct Archelon ischyros, which had a maximum body length of 15 feet (4.6 m), according to the statement. Fossils of ancient giant turtles like A. ischyros are predominantly found in North and South America and, until now, no European marine turtles larger than leatherbacks, living or extinct, have ever been discovered. Related: Ancient turtle with a frog face sucked down its prey millions of years ago The pelvis of L. aenigmatica not only hints at the ancient turtle's immense size but also provides clues about its evolutionary past. The bone has an unusual protrusion, potentially linked to the respiratory system, that is so unlike anything seen in modern or extinct turtles that the newly described species has been put into a new genus, according to the statement. The discovery of L. aenigmatica, therefore, upends what researchers know about the evolution of gigantism in turtles because it suggests that there was more than one lineage of marine turtles that grew to such extreme sizes. It also hints that there may be other ancient giant turtle species waiting to be discovered. L. aenigmatica is not the only giant turtle discovery in recent years. In January 2021, researchers in Venezuela unearthed an almost completely intact 8-foot-long (2.4 m) shell belonging to a freshwater turtle, Stupendemys geographicus, that lived around 8 million years ago. link: https://www.livescience.com/12-foot-ancient-turtle
  16. The first-edition Ocean One SUV is already sold out, as are lower-end models, but the top Ocean Extreme model can still be ordered at a price just under $70,000. Initial 2023 Fisker Ocean production commenced today at their carbon-neutral plant in Graz, Austria, with most deliveries slated for next year as production gradually ramps from 300 in Q1 of 2023 to 8000 in Q2 to more than 42,000 expected by year's end. All first-edition Ocean One units are spoken for, as are 2023 examples of the affordable FWD Sport and AWD Ultra, but orders are still being taken for the top-level AWD Ocean Extreme, which goes for $68,999—plus a yet-to-be-announced destination charge. Fisker says the top-level model will offer 350 miles of range according to EPA methodology, and can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds thanks to the 550 horsepower available from its dual-motor AWD platform. Official production began today for Henrik Fisker’s long-awaited Ocean all-electric five-passenger SUV, which had an uncertain gestation until a tie-in with assembly partner Magna International was announced in October 2020. Fisker's previous automobile, the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid, is not affiliated with the Fisker Ocean project, the tooling having been sold off and reconstituted by Karma Automotive as Henrik Fisker himself moved on to focus on his all-electric Ocean SUV project. Expectations are high that the Ocean will make a good first impression when customer deliveries begin. After all, the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria, also produces the Mercedes-Benz G-class, the BMW 5-series, and the Jaguar E-Pace and I-Pace, as well as the BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra. As expected from an established assembly plant, they seem to be on the right track to manage build quality and early teething problems, with a gradual production ramp-up that will result in just 300 examples produced by the end of first quarter of 2023. And it's not as though the Ocean's assembly line’s switch just got flipped today, as some 95 prototype Ocean vehicles were built as the line came together. Production will increase to 8000 by the end of next year's second quarter and rise to more than 42,000 by year's end. Compared with the unrelated Volkswagen ID.4, the Ocean SUV is some five inches wider and nearly eight inches longer (both in wheelbase and in an overall sense), but it stands no taller. That gives it a sleek shape that, crucially, also provides increased underfloor space for a larger battery. The capacity of that battery has not yet been announced, but Fisker does report that all-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with the larger Hyper Range battery will be good for up to 350 miles according to EPA testing methodology, thanks in part to a rear motor disconnect that comes into play while cruising. At the other extreme, Fisker says that Boost mode will unleash as much as 550 horsepower that can accelerate the machine to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. The front-wheel-drive Sport, which is currently sold out for 2023 thanks to its low starting price of $37,499 before destination, will use the smaller Touring Range pack and deliver 250 miles of range. Its single-motor powertrain makes 275 hp and takes the entry-level Ocean to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. Few interior dimensions have been released apart from headroom, but at 41.1 inches in front and 40.4 inches out back, things do look promising for the relatively low-slung electric crossover, which offers a panoramic glass roof across the board. The tinted glass panels are fixed on the entry-level Sport, sliding on the midlevel Ultra, and supplemented with photovoltaic panels on the Extreme and the first-edition One. With luck, we will be able to evaluate and test an early production model in the first part of 2023. The Ocean has been a long time coming, but Henrik Fisker's tie-up with an established auto assembly outfit appears to be on the cusp of paying off in a very tangible way. link : https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42009259/fisker-ocean-goes-into-production/
  17. When I see our wedding photos, it’s like looking at someone else’s One cold, crisp evening in February 2016, I went on a white-water kayaking course in Hertfordshire. I’d had lessons, but I was still a beginner and my skills weren’t as strong as the flow of the water. I spun, flipped and tipped. I heard a loud thud. I didn’t know which way was up. There was a sharp pain on my brow below my helmet, water red like wine, tossing and whirling me in the current. There were shouts and ropes thrown, my coach scooping me to safety. The duty manager picked me up, then called an ambulance. In hospital, I realised something was wrong. I couldn’t remember my name, and everything made me laugh, even being asked to lie down for the CT scan. I thought my husband, Richard, was my dad, and my daughter was my sister. The doctor told Richard I’d be better in a few weeks. But six disorienting months later, after an MRI, I was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome, and cognitive, communication and memory difficulties caused by my head injury. Things changed after the accident. Before, I was the chief at home. I organised the household and sorted any issues with our then-teenage daughters, Lucy-Rose and Caitlyn. Richard and I shared aspirations, but I made things happen. I had more oomph. It was annoying sometimes. He said he was laid-back; I said that wasn’t the word I’d use. But we worked well together. My amnesia frustrated us. I couldn’t remember anything about Richard. I was living with a stranger. So was he. Bewildered and overwhelmed, I cried daily. Richard never criticised; he just encouraged me. I’d forget I’d turned on the cooker. He’d ask: “Is something burning?” His approach helped me stay calm. We’d smile and say: “Oops.” We loved the outdoors. Our honeymoon included quad biking, cycling and skiing in Scotland. After the accident, I stopped going out because I couldn’t recognise people, places or events. I had to leave my learning-support job and teacher-training programme. My five-second memory wouldn’t get me through. Nor my lack of self-awareness. I had a personality change. Before, I’d been capable, liked and in control, and that person had gone. I got into a low place. When we look at our wedding photos, it’s like being shown someone else’s pictures. It looks nice, the people are smiling. But I don’t remember it. I feel sad for Richard that we can’t have those shared memories. I’d ask him: “Why are you still with me?” “You’re still you,” he’d say. “I made a commitment to you. It would have been easier to walk away. But that would have said more about me than you.” Over time I watched him, asking if he felt worried and why, or happy and why. After a few years, I could hold enough information in my head to realise that I had married a really lovely person. Five months after the accident, I started adventuring again. I don’t recognise all the dangers, but Richard helps me. I’ve learned to ride a motorbike and joined a kayaking club. link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/nov/18/experience-lost-my-memory-fell-in-love-husband-second-time
  18. WASHINGTON – Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday named Jack Smith to oversee the politically fraught investigations into former President Donald Trump. Smith is a career prosecutor and Garland vowed that he would carry out the job of looking into Trump in an "evenhanded and urgent manner." Smith, who according to the Department of Justice, began his prosecutorial career in 1994 as an assistant district attorney in New York, has served since 2018 as the chief prosecutor for a special court in The Hague charged with adjudicating war crimes in Kosovo. He has resigned from that position to take on the new role. It will be no easy task: Trump's announcement this week that he will run for president in 2024 has raised questions about how prosecutors will handle a difficult investigation that Trump has already dismissed as politically motivated. Trump repeatedly sought to undermine Robert Mueller, the last special counsel who investigated him. In a cable TV interview Friday, Trump called Smith's appointment as special counsel "so unfair" and "so political." Appointment:Garland appoints special counsel to oversee Trump investigations Trump:Why Trump's decision to run for president won't change his legal woes Stay in the conversation on politics:Sign up for the OnPolitics newsletter Here's what we know about special counsel Jack Smith. Who is special counsel Jack Smith? Smith has had a long career as a prosecutor. In New York, Smith prosecuted matters ranging from gang murders of police officers to civil rights violations, according to the Department of Justice. From 2008 to 2010, he served with the International Criminal Court, where he supervised "sensitive investigations of foreign government officials and militia for war crimes," according to a Department of Justice biography. In 2010, Smith returned to the Justice Department to serve as chief of the Public Integrity Section, where he led a team of more than 30 prosecutors who handled public corruption and election crimes cases across the United States, the Justice Department said. In 2015, he served as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, later becoming the Acting United States Attorney. "As far as I'm concerned, he's the best person for the job," said David Schwendiman, who preceded Smith as a Kosovo war crimes prosecutor in the International Criminal Court. "He's brilliant. He's tough. He's independent. He's nonpartisan... Based on all I know about him, he's a man of integrity." Schwendiman said Smith's international experience has also prepared him for what promises to be an intently politically-charged appointment. "He took the position that I had, and three quarters of what you do as an executive prosecutor in the war crimes world, particularly when you're talking about something like Kosovo, is to clear the political air so that your people can do the job, provide a political umbrella and maintain independence and integrity," Schwendiman said. What will special counsel Jack Smith investigate? Smith will oversee a multi-pronged investigation into Trump's alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election and the transfer of highly classified government documents to his Florida estate after exiting the White House. Garland said Smith would oversee the investigation into whether "any person or entity" interfered with the transfer of power after the 2020 election. The department has been investigating alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election and the summoning of the mob last year that led to the deadly Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol. The second investigation involves the handling of classified documents and other records that were discovered during a search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in August. "Jack Smith is the consummate professional and career DOJ prosecutor," tweeted Andrew Weissmann, a former federal prosecutor and a New York University law professor. "Not a political bone in his body. And a skilled and fast prosecutor who does not let the grass grow under his feet." link: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2022/11/18/jack-smith-special-counsel-trump-investigations/10728873002/
  19. Smartprof plans to dominate Morocco’s private tutoring market while expanding more in North and West Africa. Rabat - Morocco’s private tutoring marketplace Smartprof recently raised $110,000 in pre-seed funding from UM6P Ventures, Plug and Play, and business angels. In an interview with Morocco World News, Smartprof co-founder Mustapha Faiz stated that the startup, whose valuation remains undisclosed, aims to use the funding to expand its presence in Morocco and West Africa. “Smartprof is currently present in two main regions: Grand Casablanca and Rabat and we are looking to expand in other major Moroccan cities: Agadir, Marrakech, Dakhla, Tangier, Oujda, Meknes,” Faiz explained. In addition to increasing its share in the Moroccan market, Smartprof plans to “start expanding in other African countries in the upcoming months,” the co-founder said. “Our ambition is to become a one-stop shop platform for private tutors in West and North Africa” Today, Smartprof offers one-on-one or group live interactive sessions with the support of a relatively small team. However, the team is expected to exceed 10 members over the coming weeks as the management, Mustapha and Hamza Faiz and Ali Faouzi, recruits a “small army of developers” to improve the quality of the “product by adding new functionalities and making it scalable.” Smartprof is currently “the only major player [in Morocco] in terms of on-demand private tutoring,” Faiz told MWN, explaining that “other Ed tech actors provide pre-recorded educational content.” Read Also: Coursera CEO: ‘Businesses, Schools Will Never be the Same’ Talking about competition in the Moroccan market, Faiz stressed that Smartprof’s “team, operational efficiency, and ability to translate the best tutoring experience through our product” differentiate the startup from other edtech solutions that provide “e-learning, LMS [learning management systems] or school information management systems.” While the Moroccan edtech landscape remains “very small” and “not substantial,” Faiz expressed gratitude for the support of “different actors and facilitators such as l'École Centrale Casablanca, an engineering school or Startgate, Morocco's biggest startup campus." Morocco’s edtech sector remains in its early stages of development. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to generalize e-learning solutions for all. Thus, the shift towards the digitization of certain aspects of learning is expected to grow exponentially over the coming years and innovative solutions, led by the local startup ecosystem, are set to define the future of education in Morocco and Africa. link: https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/11/352455/moroccos-smartprof-eyes-west-african-edtech-markets-with-new-investment

  21. FTX is said to be facing investigations from the US Justice Department, Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, facing mounting legal challenges over the collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange, may have harmed his defense by speaking publicly in recent days, legal experts said. Bankman-Fried has sought to explain the implosion of FTX and disparaged government regulators in posts on Twitter and conversations with reporters. Attorneys said such statements will likely make life more difficult for the defense lawyers seeking to manage fallout from the exchange's demise and navigate multiple federal investigations. “There's this old saying that a lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client. The reverse is also true. An individual who is the subject of an investigation and tries to defend themselves in the court of public opinion has a fool for a lawyer,” said Justin Danilewitz, a white-collar defense lawyer at law firm Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr. In a conversation with a Vox reporter published this week, Bankman-Fried blamed FTX's collapse in part on “messy accounting,” expressed regret at his decision to file for bankruptcy and denigrated US regulators in profane terms. He later said he did not intend for the conversation to be made public. FTX is now facing investigations from the US Justice Department, Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission, sources have told Reuters. On Tuesday, a group of crypto investors filed a class action against Bankman-Fried and others who promoted FTX. Bankman-Fried's statements have already been cited in FTX's US bankruptcy proceedings. The exchange's lawyers said in court papers on Thursday that he was undermining their efforts with his "incessant and disruptive tweeting.” He has become the latest high-profile figure to continue to speak publicly despite facing serious legal scrutiny, joining a group that has included Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk, ex-pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli and former US President Donald Trump. Controlling The Story Lawyers almost always advise clients in litigation or facing government investigations not to speak about issues related to the case. Such statements could become evidence in court and could undermine a carefully crafted defense. Social media has made it easier for clients with large public platforms to try to mount their own defense, experts said. “The basic question is who controls the story,” said Stephen Gillers, a law professor at New York University and an expert on legal ethics. “From the lawyer's point of view, once he or she is hired, it's the lawyer who controls the story as far as public consumption goes.” At least one attorney, Martin Flumenbaum of law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, has already parted ways with Bankman-Fried, though the lawyer did not blame the 30-year-old entrepreneur's controversial statements. “We informed Mr. Bankman-Fried several days ago after the filing of the FTX bankruptcy that conflicts have arisen that precluded us from representing him," Flumenbaum said in a statement to Reuters. Flumenbaum declined to describe the conflicts. A onetime lawyer for convicted financier Michael Milken, Flumenbaum is currently defending Christian Larsen, the founder and chair of crypto payment and exchange company Ripple Labs Inc, in a high-profile lawsuit filed by the SEC. His law firm represents many other financial industry clients. Bankman-Fried, who did not respond to questions about his legal team this week, has hired Gregory Joseph, a criminal defense lawyer at law firm Joseph Hage Aaronson in New York, and Stanford University law professor David Mills as members of his legal team, according to a report from Semafor. Both of Bankman-Fried's parents are on the faculty of Stanford Law School. Joseph is a former president of the American College of Trial Lawyers who has written about racketeering law and rules of evidence. Mills specializes in criminal law and white-collar crime. Neither Joseph nor Mills replied to requests for comment. link: https://www.gadgets360.com/cryptocurrency/news/ftx-founder-sam-bankman-fried-public-remarks-pose-challenge-for-his-lawyer-3534260
