  5. Foxconn could now see more than 30 percent of the site's November production affected. Foxconn's flagship iPhone plant in China is set to see a further reduction in November shipments after the latest bout of worker unrest this week, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said on Friday, as thousands of employees quit. The world's largest Apple iPhone factory has been grappling with strict COVID-19 restrictions that have fuelled discontent among workers and disrupted production ahead of Christmas and January's Lunar New Year holiday, as many workers were either put into isolation or fled the plant. Following Wednesday's escalation that saw workers clash with security personnel, Foxconn could now see more than 30 percent of the site's November production affected, up from an internal estimate of up to 30 percent when the labour issues erupted in late October, the source said. The factory is the only one that makes premium iPhone models, including the iPhone 14 Pro, and the source said it is unlikely to resume full production by the end of this month. Foxconn, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, declined to comment. Apple, which said on Thursday it had staff at the factory, did not respond to a request for comment on Friday. "The worker unrest at Foxconn's plant in China could weigh on Apple's November iPhone shipments," Victoria Scholar, head of investment at Interactive Investor said, as concerns grow over Apple's ability to deliver products for the busy holiday period. Apple shares were down 1.9 percent in late morning trade on Friday, while the benchmark Nasdaq index was down 0.3 percent. "Apple is still viewed as one of the more resilient stocks in the tech sector... However, Apple continues to hold off from providing official guidance given the macroeconomic uncertainty," Scholar added. US Best Buy said on Tuesday it expected high-end iPhones to be in short supply at stores this holiday season. Analysts said iPhones at Apple stores in the United States during the Black Friday shopping season were also down from a year earlier, and it was taking longer to replenish stocks, Reuters reported this week. Lower Shipments KGI Securities analyst Christine Wang said if the current issue lasts through December, around 10 million units of iPhone production will be lost, which translates to 12 percent lower iPhone shipment in the last quarter of 2022. Wedbush Securities estimates many Apple stores now have 25 percent to 30 percent fewer iPhone 14 Pros than normal heading into the holiday shopping season. In a statement on November 7, Apple said it expected lower iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max shipments than previously anticipated. Some new recruits hired in recent weeks by Foxconn claimed they were misled over compensation benefits at the factory, and others complained about sharing dormitories with colleagues who had tested positive for COVID. Foxconn on Thursday apologised for a pay-related "technical error" when hiring and later offered CNY 10,000 (nearly Rs. 1,14,000) to protesting new recruits who agreed to resign and leave. The source said more than 20,000 workers, mostly new hires not yet working on production lines, took the money and left. Videos posted on Chinese social media on Friday showed crowds and long lines of luggage-laden workers queuing for buses. "It's time to go home," one person posted. The plant, before its troubles began, employed more than 2,00,000 staff. It has dormitories, restaurants, basketball courts and a football pitch across its sprawling roughly 1.4 million-square-metre (15 million-square-foot) facility. Another Foxconn source familiar with the matter said some new hires had left the campus but did not elaborate on how many. This person said that because the people leaving had not yet been trained or begun to work, their departures would not cause further harm to current production. "The incident has a big impact on our public image but little on our (current) capacity. Our current capacity is not affected," the source said. "There's only so much corporate can do on pandemic prevention... It's been a problem for a while. This is a problem faced by everyone," the person said, pointing to other worker unrest triggered by rigid COVID restrictions, including upheaval at another Apple supplier, Quanta, in May. Foxconn shares closed down 0.5 percent, lagging the broader market, which ended flat. link: https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/news/foxconn-iphone-plant-china-see-further-reduction-november-shipments-3554418
  6. Another day, another Android 13 rollout as Samsung has started rolling out the update on both the Galaxy S20 FE and the Galaxy S21 FE. However, as it is with all the OEMs, the update is currently rolling out in stages, so it will be some time before you can go ahead and update your phone. Samsung Stays on Schedule as It Pushes Android 13 for Galaxy S20 FE and Galaxy S21 FE This is exciting news for all the Fan Edition users because Samsung did not explicitly mention when they will be launching the update on these devices, but looking at the South Korean firm's commitment, we are happy to report that the Galaxy S21 FE and the S20 FE users can finally enjoy the new Android 13. At the time of writing, the Galaxy S20 FE is getting the update in Russia, and it is only available on the Exynos variant. However, U.S. users who are running the Snapdragon variant will have to wait for a while. On the other hand, Android 13 is also rolling out to the Galaxy S21 FE users in some regions, including Europe. It is also worth noting that the latest Android 13 update also ships with November 2022 security patch. Samsung rolling the Android 13 update in stages is nothing new, the company has done this in the past, even with the phones that have just received the latest update globally. The new update brings a lot of under-the-hood changes as well as an improved theming system. I have been using it on my Galaxy S22 Ultra since its launch, and it has been working like a charm. There are a lot of little visual updates throughout the entire OS, and it works like a charm. Have you received the Android 13 update on your phone? Let us know how your experience has been so far. 7. Today, we are taking a look at a range of Z790 motherboards that are optimized for Intel's brand new 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPUs that come with an enhanced 10nm ESF (officially the Intel 7 process, which is comparable to TSMC 7nm) process node, offering higher performance & clock speeds. Just like the 12th Gen Alder Lake, the 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPUs also feature a plethora of updates including a brand new hybrid architecture with big.SMALL design that features Raptor Cove as p- cores and Gracemont. The company has largely been stagnant in the consumer desktop space. The main reason for this stagnation has been Intel's reliance on its 14nm process node and Skylake architecture which has served the desktop space since 2015 up till 2020 (10th Generation Comet Lake) while Intel's 10nm process dilemmas and yields couldn't keep up with Skylake in mainstream desktop space. To build up its 10nm inventory for a mass consumer launch, Intel did release an intermediate platform, the Z590, and the respective 11th Gen Rocket Lake lineup with a new architecture but limited to just 8 cores due to power scaling and inefficiency on the 14nm process node. However, since the launch of 12th Gen Alder Lake, Intel has managed to turn the tide somewhat & is now offering the best value proposition in the CPU segment. Currently, Intel's Core i3, Core i5 & Core i7 lineup is in a very dominant position when it comes to price to performance versus the AMD Ryzen 5000 and even the Ryzen 7000 CPUs but with the 13th Gen Raptor Lake lineup, Intel is once again changing the game, offering even higher performance and far better value than before. There are still some places where AMD shows its strengths and that's largely the efficiency department but the more mainstream Intel hybrid options manage to close the efficiency gap effectively, especially when it comes to gaming and standard workloads. It's not a battle of CPU performance anymore as much as it is a battle of pricing and the one major advantage that Intel buyers have is the option to select between DDR5 and DDR4 memory whereas AMD Ryzen 7000 users are stuck with only DDR5 options. While DDR5 is the future, the new standard currently doesn't make much sense for the budget and mainstream gaming segment hence why many AMD Ryzen 5000 users are reluctant to upgrade and are probably gonna go two routes, either stick with their current platform or go Intel as they are the budget king at the moment. So this year, Intel has decided to launch a second hybrid architecture in the form of its 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPU lineup. It is more or less an update to the existing 12th Gen CPUs but offers a whole lot more in the form of cores, threads, cache, clocks, and better I/O capabilities. Following are the main features of the lineup: Intel 13th Gen Raptor Lake Desktop CPUs Features: Up To 24 Cores & 32 Threads Brand New Raptor Cove CPU Cores (Higher P-Core IPC) Based on 10nm ESF 'Intel 7' process node Up To 6.0 GHz clock speeds (expected) Double The E-Cores on certain variants Increased Cache for both P-Cores & E-Cores Supported on existing LGA 1700 motherboards New Z790, H770, and B760 motherboards Up To 28 PCIe Lanes (PCH Gen 4 + Gen 3) Up To 28 PCIe Lanes (CPU Gen 5 x16 + Gen 4 x12) Dual-Channel DDR5-5600 Memory Support 20 PCIe Gen 5 Lanes Enhanced Overclocking Features 125W PL1 TDP (Flagship SKUs) AI PCIe M.2 Technology Q4 2022 Launch For this review, I'll be putting the Core i9-13900K to test on four Z790 motherboards, the MSI MEG Z790 ACE, the ASRock Z790 Taichi Carrara, the ASRock Z790 Steel Legend WIFI & the Gigabyte Z790 AERO G. 9. Starfield releases in 2023 Starfield is now well within reach, after having been in development for a very long time. It seems like an age since we first heard rumblings of Starfield, so it's great that we'll be playing it next year. In terms of what to expect, it's essentially Skyrim in space, though perhaps that's selling it short. This is a truly next-gen RPG after all. Now that Starfield has officially been revealed, Bethesda is starting to pull back the curtain, providing a steady stream of info in the run up to launch. So far we've seen a couple of trailers, as well as an extended gameplay demo. By all accounts, Starfield is a huge undertaking, offering over 1000 planets for players to explore. While we know a fair bit about Starfield these days, Bethesda is still keeping many things hidden. Considering we could be less than a year out from launch, there's plenty of questions that remain unanswered. Perhaps this is for the best. Starfield is a narrative-driven singleplayer experience, after all. For now, here's everything we know about Starfield so far, including all of the latest news and rumors. Starfield: cut to the chase What is it? A Bethesda RPG set in outer space What can I play it on? PC and Xbox Series X|S When can I play it? First half of 2023 (exact date TBC) Starfield launches for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC sometime in the first half of 2023, after Bethesda announced a delay for the game. As for when in the first half of 2023 the game might release, some small print spotted at the bottom of an Xbox Game Pass subscription plan page has suggested it could be "early 2023". Further to that, Kingscast(opens in new tab) host, KingFanMan, has theorized it could be March 2023. According to him, Bethesda has only delayed three games before and that while "all three games were supposed to come out in the fall" like Starfield, "all three games came out in March the next year." We'll have to wait for something official from Bethesda before we can be certain. Originally, at E3 2021, Bethesda announced Starfield would release on November 11, 2022. In an interview with the Washington Post(opens in new tab), Todd Howard said the studio was "confident in the date", but the delay, Bethesda has said, is to ensure that players "receive the best, most polished" version of it. When Starfield does release, it'll be an Xbox console exclusive, with the E3 2021 trailer explicitly confirming this, ruling out a PS5 release. It won't be on Xbox One either, Bethesda's moving on from Microsoft's last-gen console. With Microsoft now owners of developer Bethesda, this could be indicative of the future of titles like The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 going forward. 10. Four Onoma mobile games will be going offline after the studio shuts down. Onoma Studios, previously known as Square Enix Montreal, is shutting down this week and some of its mobile titles will be going with it. Ahead of the studio's last day on November 24, Onoma announced that Deus Ex Go, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, Arena Battle Champions, and Space Invaders: Hidden Heroes will be shutting down for good on January 4. The games will be taken off the App Store and Google Play Store as of December 1, and players who already have them downloaded will be able to continue playing until the games shut down for good on January 4. Players will no longer be able to make in-game purchases as of today, and Onoma encourages anyone who made previous purchases to make use of them before the games shut down in January. While it's common for games to shut down servers or live support for older games, in this case the four titles in question will become completely unplayable as of January 4. The games include po[CENSORED]r mobile puzzle game Deus Ex Go, as well as Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, a recent mobile title that released under a year ago. The other games in Onoma's "Go" series, Lara Croft Go and Hitman Go will not be affected by the studio's closure. Onoma was acquired by Embracer Group earlier this year along with a number of Square Enix's other western studios, was rebranded in October, before Embracer announced in November that the mobile studio would be shutting down for good. 11. GTA Online's latest Heists Event is wrapping up in a big way. In 2020, Rockstar Games held a "Heist Challenge" in Grand Theft Auto Online, offering free rewards for the entire community if players could collectively steal GTA$100 billion from Heist Finales in one week. They delivered in spades, bringing home an astounding $1 trillion by the time the event was over. So for 2022, Rockstar is stepping things up a bit. "This year, to put a proper cap on The Heists Event, we are putting out a call across Los Santos and Blaine County for all thieves, wheelmen, hackers, and Heist tacticians to double the previous efforts," Rockstar announced(opens in new tab). "Put your criminal instincts to the ultimate test and score big in the all-new Heists Challenge. Burgle alongside the community this week and hit a cumulative grand total of GTA$2 TRILLION to unlock a special reward coming later this year." What's the reward? Steal the money and find out, I guess. Heist finales are the culmination of heists in GTA Online, which are essentially multi-stage events in which individual players set up a crime, assemble a crew, and then pull off the job. Specific details vary between heists (there are quite a few) but generally speaking they're complex operations that require coordination among players—think Ocean's Eleven or Inside Man, but in videogame format. This GTA Online challenge specifies Heist Finales because that's where the actual score is made. $2 trillion is a ridiculous amount of in-game money even by GTA Online's profligate standards, and I would declare it an impossible goal by default if it weren't for the fact that players had made it halfway there basically by accident. They're clearly going to have to work harder for the reward this time around, but I have a feeling they'll be able to pull it off. The Pacific Standard Job is also offering double $GTA and RP this week, so that might be a good place to get started. GTA Online's 2022 Heists Event runs until November 30. For other ideas on good jobs with big payoffs, have a look at our ranking of GTA Online's heists(opens in new tab)—a few more have been added since, but it's a very handy resource if you're new in town. link : https://www.pcgamer.com/rockstar-wants-gta-online-players-to-steal-dollar2-trillion-yes-trillion-in-a-week/
  12. Paleontologists in China have examined the remarkable gut remnants of a birdlike dinosaur that lived more than 100 million years ago. More than 100 million years ago, a fearsome birdlike dinosaur was swept into a lake and transformed into an exceptional fossil in what is now China, preserving one of the few intact gut remnants known from nonavian dinosaurs, a new study finds. Paleontologists knew they had unearthed something special when they saw "a large bluish layer in the abdomen'' of the fossilized beast, which belongs to the newly discovered species Daurlong wangi, as well as a dinosaur lineage called the dromaeosaurids, which includes the ancestors of modern birds. This bluish layer had "exceptional preservation" of the dinosaur's gut, the researchers wrote in the study, published in the journal Scientific Reports(opens in new tab) on Nov. 19. The finding offers valuable insight into both bird and dinosaur gut evolution, giving researchers a clearer window into dinnertime during the Lower Cretaceous (145 million to 100.5 million years ago). Dromaeosaurids — also known as "raptors" — like D. wangi were mostly small, feathered and carnivorous. This group roamed the Earth from the mid-Jurassic period (about 167 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous period (66 million years ago). Their ranks included some of the most famous pop culture dinosaurs, such as Velociraptor and Deinonychus. But despite their po[CENSORED]rity, little is known about their actual guts. Soft tissue preservation is rare for any fossil, and intestinal preservation is particularly uncommon in dinosaurs. "This is the first case among dromaeosaurids," study co-author Andrea Cau, an independent paleontologist based in Parma, Italy, told Live Science in an email. Fossilization conditions have to be just right in order to prevent decay-causing bacteria from eating away delicate soft tissues, such as cartilage and organs. The newly described D. wangi specimen was likely buried very quickly under soft, fine sediments at the bottom of a body of water in what is now the Jehol Biota — an area known for well-preserved fossils in modern-day Inner Mongolia, an autonomous region in northern China. There, in the low-oxygen environment where aerobic bacteria could not survive, the dinosaur's remains mineralized into fossils. The researchers named the dinosaur's genus, "Daurlong," after the Daur people of Inner Mongolia and "long," the Chinese word for "dragon." The species name, "wangi," honors Wang Junyou, the director of the Inner Mongolian Museum of Natural History. The remarkable preservation provides insight into how D. wangi lived, and what it could have eaten. From what the researchers could tell, its intestinal tract appears similar to the very few other remnants known from meat-eating dinosaurs, suggesting that more omnivorous dromaeosaurid gut plans didn't evolve until after the dawn of modern birds following the Cretaceous period. It also appears that D. wangi ate small prey, such as mammals (which were no larger than badgers during the Mesozoic era), fish, other small dinosaurs and possibly amphibians. "Given the abundance of frogs and other amphibians in the Daurlong locality," it's possible that this dromaeosaurid hunted frogs and salamanders, Cau said. Although D. wangi's guts were preserved, its stomach was not. Perhaps the "extremely acid environment of the stomach immediately after the death of the animal" prevented it from mineralizing and turning into a fossil, the researchers wrote in the study. Contrary to their depiction in the 1993 movie "Jurassic Park," most dromaeosaurids were relatively small and lightweight. D. wangi itself was a little less than five feet (1.5 meters) long from tip to tail, about the size of a pony. And, like other members of its family, it sported feathers. In the future, Cau and his team plan to examine the specimen more closely to glean insight about its feathers, life, and possibly its death. "Our hope is to determine some information about its plumage color in life and to better reconstruct the peculiar conditions which led to soft tissue preservation," he said. link: https://www.livescience.com/dromaeosaurid-dinosaur-intestines
  13. This low-mileage Testarossa oozes '80s nostalgia, no doubt due to its 'Miami Vice' tie-in and retro photoshoot vibes. This 1988 Ferrari Testarossa that's currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer has us overdosing on nostalgia. • Not only is the Testarossa an '80s icon thanks to the TV show Miami Vice, but the BaT photoshoot has vivid retro vibes. • This minty '88 Testarossa has just over 5000 miles, all piled up from its 390-hp 4.9-liter flat-12-cylinder engine. The auction ends Tuesday, November 29. If you waste as much time dreamscrolling on Bring a Trailer as I do, by now you know the vast array of exotic and vintage vehicles can easily blend together unless you're searching for something specific. If I had a dime for every time I saw a Ferrari Testarossa up for auction, I feel like I'd have enough to actually afford one. However, the 1988 example that's currently listed on BaT, which—like Car and Driver—is part of Hearst Autos, caused me to pause due to its wonderfully retro photoshoot. There's just something about the purple and gold backdrop in the Testarossa photos that vividly recalls the 1980s vibe, a decade when cars were characters as big in American TV shows as the actors who drove them. Who can forget K.I.T.T., the black customized 1982 Pontiac Trans Am from Knight Rider, or the red Ferrari 308GTS Quattrovalvole wheeled by a mustachioed Tom Selleck in Magnum P.I.? And of course, the other ride that epitomizes the '80s is the Testarossa, like the white one Don Johnson's character Sonny Crockett drives in Miami Vice. All of this automotive nostalgia was stirred up inside me when I scrolled past the '88 Testarossa listing, and I was compelled to investigate further because I wasn't even quite sure what color paint it had. Upon closer inspection, I discovered it wore what Ferrari calls Oro Chiaro Metallizzato (translation: clear gold metallic light blue-green). It certainly wouldn't be my first choice. Then again, what's tackier, er, more appropriate to represent 1980s style than a gold supercar? For those of you who could care less about my incessant nostalgia, I'm happy to point out that this specific Testarossa only has just over 5000 miles on it. Whether those were easy or hard miles, we'll never know. Judging by the pictures, though, this Ferrari looks pretty mint on top, inside, and underneath. Currently, it has a bid of $112,000, and the auction is set to end on Tuesday, November 29. Its Nero Connolly (read: black) leather interior looks immaculate and free of wear, although the color combination is a boring choice, in my humble opinion. I think the seats look as if they were pulled out of a bumper car, and the center console is a distracting hodgepodge of buttons. Still, I only wish I could grip the Ferrari's thin-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel and clink the shifter through its exposed gates. Did I mention this car comes with matching luggage? That is so fetch. Last but not least, the 1988 Ferrari Testarossa features a 4.9-liter flat-12-cylinder engine. By today's standards, its factory-rated 380 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque wouldn't even impress people with a Ford Explorer ST in their driveway. When Car and Driver tested a 1985 Testarossa, it needed 5.0 seconds to hit 60 mph and 13.3 seconds at 107 mph to finish the quarter-mile. Again, a 1087-pound-heavier, 400-hp Explorer ST is within tenths of both marks. Yet, in this admittedly random Ford-versus-Ferrari comparison, it should be obvious that when it comes to the Testarossa, it's never going to be about the numbers. It's about being one of the most recognizable cars on the planet, and one that makes you feel like a sun-tanned Sonny Crockett chasing coke-dealing baddies through the streets of 1980s Miami. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42040318/1988-ferrari-testarossa-bring-a-trailer-auction/
  14. We were sinking fast. I sat on deck, watching for help, preparing for death Iwas 20 when, having grown up in Birmingham and dropped out of university, I wanted an adventure. I bought a plane ticket to the Canary Islands and, with no sailing experience, hitched boat rides across the Atlantic, making it to New Zealand. I settled there, working as a carpenter and builder, and met my wife, Rosie, in 2012. Rosie was English, too, and when she was pregnant with our daughter Anua in 2014, we returned to the UK. But by the time Anua’s sister Willow arrived in 2017, we’d decamped again, to France. The grand plan was a life on the ocean. We loved the water and wanted to share that with the girls. But when they were aged four and one, Rosie died from breast cancer. We were devastated. Three years passed until, in December 2021, I saw a 38ft catamaran for sale in Portimão, Portugal. I sold our little house and bought it. I wanted to find someone to live onboard and help with the girls while I worked, and Kim, an artist and seasoned sailor, answered. Kim and I soon fell in love and in June 2022, the four of us set sail. We cruised along Portugal’s Algarve coast to the Canaries then the Azores, and planned to return to England during winter. It was late August and, on our fourth night at sea, I took first watch while Kim and the girls slept. It was calm. Then at about 10pm, there was a loud bang. Kim was catapulted from bed. I raced down the hatch. Water was gushing over my ankles. As I searched for damage, my hand touched a jagged piece of wood. Attached to it was a large chunk of grey skin with a thick layer of pink, blubbery flesh that could only belong to a whale. The wooden plank left a hole in the boat. I didn’t want to know if the whale was still out there. We were sinking fast. Water was waist-high. Kim was scooping out as much water as she could. Willow was moved to the port hull with Anua, where the cabin was watertight. We were 600 miles off Portugal, all alone. I activated distress calls to alert passing ships and the coastguard; to keep the boat afloat for as long as possible, we threw our worldly possessions overboard. If we weren’t rescued before it went down, we’d have to flee in a dinghy, so we pumped it up and Kim prepared food and water for three days. There would be no space on the dinghy for our dog, Nala. The horror of our situation hit hard. Kim stayed with the girls while I sat on the roof, chain-smoking, watching for help and preparing for death. Aidan Rowan sitting on his sofa Experience: I was struck by lightning while sitting on my sofa Read more Advertisement At about 1am, I saw a low-flying plane. I scrambled for a torch and waved frantically. I was sure it had seen us and calculated it would take 30 hours for a boat to leave port and reach us. We had to find a way to survive. Kim and I spoke of many end-of-the-world things as we waited and the girls slept. About 4.30am, I spotted a light on the horizon. To my relief, it was a ship. We raised the emergency beacon. By 5.30am more lights were visible – heading directly for us. I woke the girls. As the sun rose, we said goodbye to our beautiful home, disembarked into the dinghy – with Nala – and paddled towards the tanker. The crew – Croatian and Georgian workers bringing gas from the US to Poland – were relieved to see us alive. The last time they had performed a recovery, they’d found a dead man. Their route passed through the Channel, where we were transferred to a fishing boat that took us to Falmouth, where my family was waiting. The captain, Alan, treated us to fish and chips and a pint. Many of our things sank with our boat, including Rosie’s ashes. We weren’t insured for a collision with a whale, and are now staying at my mum’s, in Malvern, Worcestershire. I’ve started a crowdfunder, to rebuild. I’m bricklaying but want to build tiny, off-grid homes. When we make enough money, we’ll return to sea and continue our dream. What happened to us was a valuable lesson in the frailty of human existence. It was almost biblical. It seems fate dealt us a cruel hand but we’re hopeful that everything happens for a reason – it just doesn’t become clear until you’re farther down the road. link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/nov/25/experience-shipwrecked-boat-hit-whale
  15. "We share your pain," Russian President Vladimir Putin has told a group of mothers of Russian soldiers who have been fighting - and some of whom have been killed - in Ukraine. "Nothing can replace the loss of a son", he said in his opening remarks, before the footage on state TV was cut. The Kremlin has not commented on reports that the mothers were carefully chosen for the meeting. Opposition has been growing to Mr Putin's decision to invade Ukraine. Across Russia, groups of mothers of serving soldiers have been openly complaining that their sons are being sent into battle poorly trained and without adequate weapons and clothing, especially as the winter sets in. Some have also accused the Russian military of turning those forcefully mobilised into "cannon fodder", following a string of heavy military defeats in recent months. In a rare admission, the Kremlin said in September that mistakes had been made in its drive to mobilise army reservists. Earlier this month, Mark Milley, the most senior US general, estimated that about 100,000 Russian and 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed or injured since the war began on 24 February. What is Vladimir Putin thinking and planning? At Friday's meeting at his state residence near Moscow, Mr Putin was shown sitting at a large table with a group of 17 mothers. Some of them wore dark headscarves - a symbol of mourning. "I want you to know that I personally, and all the leadership of the country, we share this pain," the president said. "We'll be doing everything so you won't be feeling forgotten," he added, urging them not to believe "fakes" and "lies" about the raging war showing on TV or the internet. Soon after Mr Putin launched the full-scale invasion, Russian authorities brought in tough censorship laws against the media, criminalising "dissemination of false information" about its armed forces. Media outlets face fines or even closure for calling it a war - the Kremlin describes the invasion as a "special military operation". That means balanced news can be difficult to get in Russia, leading some people to use virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass the biased state-run media coverage. On Friday, President Putin also said he had wanted to meet the mothers to hear from them first-hand about the situation on the ground. And he revealed that from time to time he was speaking directly to Russian soldiers on the battlefield, describing them as "heroes". In recent weeks mothers and wives of Russians drafted into the army have been posting collective video messages complaining about how their sons and husbands have been sent off to war untrained and ill-equipped. Some women have been appealing directly to President Putin, the commander-in-chief, to sort things out. The "Putin meets mothers" event seems to be an attempt by the Kremlin to convince Russians that their president cares about the soldiers he's sending into battle, as well as their families. "We understand nothing can replace the loss of a son, a child," Mr Putin said. "Especially for a mother, to whom we are all indebted for bringing this child into the world." Considering the scale of death and destruction in Ukraine from Russia's invasion, these words are certain to infuriate Ukrainians. Mr Putin tried to come across as a caring Kremlin leader. But keep in mind: it was his decision to invade Ukraine. The "special military operation" is his idea. And in public at least he has no regrets. He told one mother: "Some people die of vodka, and their lives go unnoticed. But your son really lived and achieved his goal. He didn't die in vain." On Friday, President Putin declared that "life is more complicated than what they show on TV or even on the internet". I'd agree with him, about television in Russia, which continues to portray the Kremlin's parallel reality of events in Ukraine. In September, President Putin ordered the mobilisation of 300,000 reservists, triggering public outcry in Russia link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63760278
  16. The deal aims to coordinate efforts between Morocco and Saudi Arabia on enhancing the sustainability of the tourism sector, among other goals. Rabat - Morocco and Saudi Arabia signed on Thursday a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aiming to boost bilateral cooperation in tourism. Through the MoU, the two countries hope to strengthen cooperation in tourism with the aim of supporting the sector to attract more investments. The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the 117th Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Marrakech. The deal aims to “strengthen cooperation in the tourism sector and synchronize efforts to achieve sustainable development of the tourism industry in both countries,” according to an official statement quoted in converging news reports. In addition to tackling issues of sustainability and investments within the sector, the MoU covers the exchange of expertise between the Gulf country and Morocco. Commenting on the signing of the agreement, Morocco’s Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatim-Zahra Ammor said: “This Memorandum of Understanding between Morocco and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia illustrates a common vision between the two countries and marks a turning point in our cooperation in the tourism sector.” Ammor added that the MoU “will give rise to more joint initiatives, sharing of experiences and best practices, and will enable both countries to promote their tourism sectors and thus optimize their potential in this industry.” On his part, Saudi Arabia’s Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb insisted that the two countries share a “common commitment” to preserve their rich cultural heritages and natural sites, while putting young talent at the center of development plans. “Sustainability is at the heart of Saudi Arabia's tourism ambitions and by working with like-minded partners such as Morocco, we hope to strengthen the sector not only in the region but also globally, to make tourism more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient for people and communities,” he explained. Saudi Arabia is one of the largest foreign investors in Morocco. In 2020, foreign investments from Saudi Arabia in Morocco reached $26.6 million. The Gulf country’s investments in the north African country are largely concentrated in real estate, agriculture, and tourism.
