  1. Students, police, health care professionals and young athletes highlighted the need for awareness on cancer in the walkathon organised by The Hindu (Future India Club) in association with HCG City Cancer Centre on Thursday to mark World Cancer Day observed on February 4. Commissioner of Police B. Sreenivasulu flagged off and led the walkathon along with the management and medical team of the HCG Cancer Centre. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sreenivasulu said that cancer had been haunting the world for decades and was caused by various factors. While some types of cancer were caused by genetic issues, most were caused due to smoking and other habits. Detection of cancer played a key role in treating it. People should look for certain symptoms and consult a doctor, if needed. Most types of cancer could be cured with proper treatment and early detection, the Police Commissioner said. HCG medical director Dr. M. Gopichand said that 10 million people die across the world due to cancer every year, and in India, around 12 lakh cancer cases are detected every year and eight lakh out of them succumb to it. He said that at least one-third of the cancer cases were preventable by making lifestyle changes and avoiding smoking and consumption of alcohol. The walkathon which began at Padavalarevu Centre on BRTS Road ended at the G.V.R. Govt. Music and Dance College. Students and NSS Volunteers from Nalanda College, Madonna College for the Deaf, KBN College, SRR & CVR Govt. College and young skaters were among those who took part in the walkathon. The event highlighted the World Cancer Day theme “I can, we can”. HCG assistant vice-president (business development) Dr. Sridhar Muni, HCG cluster COO M.D. Raghuram and others were present. We have been keeping you up-to-date with information on the developments in India and the world that have a bearing on our health and wellbeing, our lives and livelihoods, during these difficult times. To enable wide dissemination of news that is in public interest, we have increased the number of articles that can be read free, and extended free trial periods. 2. OTTAWA — Canadian Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault is promising legislation this year to ensure tech giants like Google and Facebook pay for the news content they disseminate on their platforms. The promise comes as newspapers across the country are displaying blank front pages in a bid to highlight the "urgent" need for news media companies to be paid for their work. News Media Canada, which represents newspaper publishers, organized the campaign; it saw some 105 daily and community newspapers across the country displaying blank front pages Thursday, with more to follow Friday. The organization argues that Canadian news media companies are going under and journalism jobs are disappearing because their content is being used for free by Google and Facebook, which are simultaneously hoovering up 80 per cent of all digital advertising revenue. It warns that as the producers of real news disappear, "hate and fake news" will be all that's left. In a statement, Guilbeault says his department is studying options for a made-in-Canada formula for ensuring publishers are fairly compensated for the news they produce; his goal is to introduce legislation on the matter this year. "News is not free and has never been," he said in the statement Thursday. "Our position is clear: publishers must be adequately compensated for their work and we will support them as they deliver essential information for the benefit of our democracy and the health and well-being of our communities." While the tech giants have played a positive role in making news accessible, Guilbeault said, "we must address the market imbalance between news media organizations and those who benefit from their work." He added that the government is looking closely at how other countries are handling the issue, specifically France and Australia. As far as News Media Canada is concerned, Australia has found the right solution: mandatory arbitration if digital companies fail to reach an agreement with news publishers on how much they should be paid. "These massive American companies get virtually all of the revenue and don’t pay for content," says the organization's president, John Hinds, in an open letter to members of Parliament. "Movie content doesn’t work that way in Canada. Music content doesn’t work that way. TV show content doesn’t work that way. So why is news content treated differently?" Google and Facebook have threatened to shut down their services in Australia if the mandatory arbitration policy is implemented. However, Guilbeault has suggested such boycotts will become untenable as more countries follow Australia's lead. The minister is expected sometime this winter to introduce legislation to regulate the dissemination of hate speech, child pornography, non-consensual sexual images, terrorism and incitements to violence on social media. His office says legislation dealing with fair compensation for news content will be introduced separately. ——— Facebook funds a fellowship that supports journalism positions at The Canadian Press. 3. Unity Software shares fell as much as 16% in extended trading on Thursday after the video game engine developer provided a forecast that failed to meet analysts’ most optimistic estimates Here’s how the company did in the fourth quarter: Earnings: Loss of 10 per share, adjusted, vs. loss of 14 cents per share as expected by analysts, according to Refinitiv. Revenue: $220.3 million, vs. $204.23 as expected by analysts, according to Refinitiv. Revenue increased 39% from a year earlier, compared with 53% growth in the prior quarter, according to a statement. While fourth-quarter results topped estimates, the company’s forecast was disappointing for investors that bought into the stock rally. Since its IPO in September at $52 a share, Unity has almost tripled in value to $149.81 at Thursday’s close. Unity said it expects $210 million to $220 million in first-quarter revenue, which would imply about 29% annualized growth. At the middle of the range, the forecast is about inline with the $214.7 million consensus among analysts polled by Refinitiv. For all of 2021, Unity said it sees $950 million to $970 million in revenue. The middle of that range, $960 million, would represent 24% growth and is just ahead of the $956.1 million average analyst estimate. The company said in the statement that, “Our goal is to build a company that delivers revenue growth of approximately 30% over the long run.” Unity expects momentum in user engagement, including growth in the number of people who consume content created with its software, to continue in 2021 even as the coronavirus pandemic recedes, Kim Jabal, the company’s finance chief, said during a conference call with analysts. At the same time, Unity expects to endure a short-term impact after Apple introduces a privacy change that’s expected this spring, Jabal said, leading to a 3% decrease in revenue in all of 2021. Advertising is the largest piece of Unity’s Operate Solutions segment, which delivers 61% of revenue, Jabal said. “We have been working on this, honestly, for years,” she said. Unity has hired Marc Whitten, an Amazon vice president and former Microsoft executive, to run the Create Solutions business for game development, Unity CEO John Riccitiello said on the conference call. In the latest quarter, Unity said it was acquiring RestAR, a company whose artificial-intelligence software helps brands make 3D product renderings with mobile devices. The company also announced a deal with Snap that sought to make Unity advertising inventory in apps and games available to companies that advertise with Snap. Excluding the after-hours move, Unity shares are down 3% so far this year, while the S&P 500 index is up about 3% over the same period. 4. Mercury Research has published its latest CPU market share results for the fourth quarter of 2020 that show both Intel and AMD making some great strides. As per the data shared by the research firm, AMD managed to sell almost a million of its brand new Ryzen 5000 Desktop CPUs in Q4 while Intel gained market share over AMD for the first time in three years since the release of the Ryzen CPU family. AMD Shipped Nearly A Million Ryzen 5000 Desktop CPUs in Q4 2020, It's Biggest CPU Ramp Ever!, Meanwhile Intel Gains CPU Market Share For The First Time in Three Years Well, there was something good to talk about at the end of 2020 for both major CPU makers. AMD Ryzen 5000 CPUs marked the biggest ramp ever in the company's history, shipping almost 1 million units in a single quarter despite the fact that their supply was heavily constrained due to TSMC and its 7nm process node being entirely gobbled up by consoles and several of AMD's existing 7nm line of products (including GPUs). But considering 1 million CPUs isn't a small number at all, it goes off to show that there was just insane demand for AMD CPUs in the outgoing quarter & as the overall supply gets normal, we are only going to see more CPU shipments in 2021. "The Ryzen 5000 supply ramp was record-breaking for AMD by a very wide margin." "AMD also grew strongly in client CPUs, just less so than Intel, which is where AMD's share loss came from. In desktop, it's particularly noteworthy that the Ryzen 5000 "Vermeer" core CPUs had an explosive ramp in their first quarter of shipments, out-shipping AMD's best prior desktop CPU ramp by more than 2X. We believe AMD shipped close to a million units of Ryzen 5000, resulting in AMD having a record high desktop average price for the quarter." At the same time, Intel managed to increase its CPU market share in both desktop and notebook segments. This is partially due to Intel's increased CPU manufacturing capabilities with which the company can now offer larger volumes of its Core i3 and Core i5 families. As of right now, Intel's Desktop CPU market share stands at 80.7% while AMD's share stands at 19.3% (down from 20.1%). "Intel's increased capacity enabled the company to out-grow AMD in the fourth quarter, resulting in Intel's first share gains in both the client desktop and mobile CPU segments in three years," said McCarron. "Unlike mobile, Intel's share gains in the desktop market were due to higher large-core shipments, with i3 and i5 volumes growing in the quarter. Again, Intel's increased capacity for CPU manufacturing was a factor in the higher growth and share gains." Dean McCarron (Mercury Research) via Tomshardware The notebook market saw similar results with AMD which was unable to fulfill huge demand for Ryzen 4000 'Renoir' APUs in the majority of 2H 2020. AMD has since introduced its Ryzen 5000 'Cezanne' lineup but that doesn't start shipping till later this quarter. The majority of notebook CPUs shipped were mainly entry-level and budget tier designs such as Intel's Celeron and AMD's Athlon A4 / A6 which are intended primarily for Chromebook's and low-cost PCs. The market share in the notebook CPU is split at 19% for AMD and 81% for Intel for Q4 2020. "The fourth quarter was characterized by very high growth in general, but extreme growth in the mobile CPU segment in particular. Mobile CPU shipments are up nearly 60 percent on-year primarily due to Intel increasing supply. The demand that is absorbing all these new mobile processors is presumed to be due to COVID-19 related acceleration of the desktop to notebook transition that has been going on for the past few years, combined with an entry-level mobile CPU market that has been under-served for more than a year and is believed to have created a large backlog of demand for low-cost CPUs waiting to be filled," McCarron noted. "A very large portion of the growth in the quarter of both mobile CPUs and overall shipments was due to a massive increase in entry-level processors such as Intel's Celeron and AMD's "Stoney Ridge" A4 and A6 series, both often used in Chromebooks and low-cost PCs. Many of these are believed to be shipping into the educational PC market. The low-end growth is a continued trend from last quarter. Increased manufacturing capacity has allowed Intel to greatly increase the supply of "small core" processors like Celeron and Pentium." Dean McCarron (Mercury Research) via Tomshardware "AMD did continue to gain share in the server CPU market, with the new Milan processor contributing to the gains while the older Rome core EPYC continued to grow," Dean McCarron (Mercury Research) via Tomshardware Lastly, in the server segment, AMD continued its growth and climbed to a 7.1% market share in Q4 2020. AMD is clawing back share from Intel at a steady rate and with its 3rd Gen EPYC Milan lineup on the horizon, we will see that momentum continuing in the latter half of 2021.
  5. MLB The Show 21’s Collector’s Edition is significant this year not just for its contents, but because of what it stands for. Sony has partnered with the Jackie Robinson Foundation, and will be donating $1 to the charity for every copy sold in the US through 31st December. However, as brand strategist Ramone Russell explains on the PlayStation Blog, this relationship runs deeper. “The donations will establish the JRF MLB The Show Scholars supported by PlayStation Pathways program,” he writes. “Scholars will receive four-year scholarships and extensive support services, including career guidance and internship placement. It’s important for us to write more than just a cheque. The partnership with JRF will also include mentorship with PlayStation and Sony San Diego employees as well as an internship to get real world, on-the-job experience. We couldn’t be more excited to launch this partnership with Jackie’s family and the Jackie Robinson Foundation.” So, what of the Collector’s Edition itself, then? Well, there are a few permutations. For starters, the Jackie Robinson Edition will be available at retail, and will cost $84.99. It’ll be available in an exclusive Steelbook Case, and will come with a Blu-Ray copy of the PlayStation 4 game as well as a digital copy of the PlayStation 5 edition. You’ll also get exclusive early access (from 16th April) and a bunch of in-game items, including: a Diamond Variety Pack, two Gold Choice Packs, double daily login rewards for the release’s entire lifecycle, 10 The Show packs, 10,000 Stubs, and immediate access to the Jackie Robinson bat skin. If you don’t want to buy physical, then you can get the Digital Deluxe Edition, which costs $99.99. This focuses more on in-game items, so while you still get both the PS5 and PS4 versions, you also get: two Diamond Variety Packs, five Gold Choice Packs, one Ballplayer Equipment Pack, double daily login rewards for the release’s entire lifecycle, 10 The Show packs, 10,000 Stubs, and immediate access to the Jackie Robinson bat skin. Then, finally, there’s the Jackie Robinson Deluxe Edition, available physically, which includes all of the contents of the Jackie Robinson Edition, but adds a limited edition New Era MLB The Show 9FIFTY Jackie Robinson Deluxe Edition Cap as well. That will retail for $99.99. One thing to note with this version is that you also get a digital version of the aforementioned hat for use in Diamond Dynasty as well. Lots to chew over, then. Will you be picking up any of the Collector’s Editions at all? Let us know in the comments section, and remember you can find out more information about all of the options on the PlayStation Blog.
  6. TORONTO -- Consultants estimate that car and truck sales last month fell 17.4 per cent compared with January 2020, after COVID-19 lockdowns and inventory shortages hampered sales. DesRosiers Automotive Consultants says that 90,890 cars and trucks were sold in January, down from the 109,988 sold in the same month last year, as much of the country faced restrictions related to the pandemic. The consultants say the drop in vehicle sales last month is a significant change from January 2020, which was the fourth best January on record for Canada auto sales. DesRosiers managing partner Andrew King says it was no surprise that auto sales declined in January, since the industry has also been working through supply chain disruptions over the past month A separate report from on U.S. vehicle sales from TD Economics says that a shortage of microchips has temporarily halted production at multiple North American car and truck plants. DesRosiers Automotive Consultants say that despite the overall sales decline last month, light trucks gained po[CENSORED]rity in Canada and accounted for 84.6 per cent of sales. King says that with light trucks "smashing through the 80 per cent threshold," SUVs and pickup trucks "continued to make relative market gains." 7. World Cancer Day 2021: According to the World Health Organization, India contributes to nearly 60% of head and neck cancer patients worldwide and this number is expected to double by 2030. These cancers affect men twice as much as compared to women. Head and neck cancer commonly refers to squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, mouth, throat or voice box. It also includes cancers that arise in the nasal cavity, sinuses, lips, thyroid gland, and salivary glands. Oral cancers are the commonest sites involved in head and neck cancer. World Cancer Day: How can a person know if the cancer has spread? Most head and neck cancers can be detected through a biopsy, where a sample of the tissue is taken for closer examination once initial tests indicate abnormality in the tissue. In certain cases, the oncologist may recommend a specialised test to accurately detect and decide the best possible treatment. Post diagnosis, the patient undergoes an imaging test like a CT or MRI scan or a full body PET CT scan to determine the extent and spread of the cancer from its point of origin. When the diagnosis highlights a spread in the cancer, it is known as metastasis. Also read: Breast Cancer Risk: Should You Be Worried? Expert Explains How To Reduce Your Odds How can it be detected and is it treatable? The symptoms of head and neck cancers include a lump or a sore that does not heal, a persistent sore throat, difficulty in swallowing, and a change or hoarseness in the voice. These symptoms may also be caused by other, less serious conditions. Therefore, it is important to check with a doctor on experiencing any of these symptoms. The doctor can further recommend tests to arrive at a diagnosis. Seeking medical consultation provides an opportunity to undergo timely screening, especially for those at high risk of the disease. What kinds of treatments are available for this disease and are all equally effective? The treatment plan for the patient depends on several factors, including the exact location of the tumor, stage of the cancer, age and overall health. The best treatment results are achieved for patients in early stage of the disease. Treatment for head and neck cancer can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy or a combination of treatments. However, surgery for head and neck cancers can be disfiguring and often changes the patient's ability to chew, swallow, or talk. Also read: Follow These 6 Steps To Reduce Your Risk Of Lung Cancer Are head and neck cancers related to lifestyle? What are some precautions people can take to prevent this disease? Tobacco consumption, both smoking and in chewable forms, along with alcohol are the main causes of these cancers. People who consume both tobacco and alcohol are at greater risk than people who consume only one of these. A significant and increasing proportion of oropharyngeal (tonsillar and base of tongue) cancers can be attributed to human papilloma virus (HPV). These can be prevented by adopting safe sexual practices. Patients who have been treated for head and neck cancers also have an increased chance of developing a new cancer, usually in the head, neck, esophagus, or lungs. Hence it is important to be under regular medical check-ups.
  8. There are 126 new COVID-19 cases and three more deaths, Manitoba public health officials say, as the province's test-positivity rate drops to a low not seen in over three months. The new cases announced Wednesday follow two double-digit days so far this week. Close to half (55) of Wednesday's cases are from the Northern Health Region, 32 are in Winnipeg, 24 are in the Interlake-Eastern health region, eight are in the Southern Health region and seven are in the Prairie Mountain Health region. There are 3,358 active COVID-19 cases in the province, the province's data says, though health officials have said that number may be inflated due to a backlog in data entry. Cases of variants of the novel coronavirus first reported in the United Kingdom and South Africa have not yet been detected in Manitoba, says Dr. Jazz Atwal, Manitoba's acting deputy chief provincial public health officer. The five-day test-positivity rate for all of Manitoba is 6.9 per cent, and in Winnipeg, it's down to 3.9 per cent. Manitoba's test-positivity rate was last this low on Oct. 25, 2020. Manitoba aims to be ready to deliver 1.5M vaccines from April to June The three deaths reported Wednesday actually occurred Monday, Atwal said. No death data was issued Tuesday because of a system reset. The people who died were a woman in her 90s linked to the outbreak at Heritage Life Personal Care Home in the Southern Health region and two women from Winnipeg, one in her 70s and another in her 80s. A total of 835 people have now died from COVID-19 in Manitoba. There are 260 people in hospital due to COVID-19, including 34 patients in intensive care units. COVID-19 outbreaks at Lions Prairie Manor personal care home in Portage la Prairie and Actionmarguerite St. Joseph and Park Manor personal care home in Winnipeg have been declared over. Despite improving case numbers, it could be a few months before businesses see some return to normalcy around the workplace, Atwal said, citing uncertainties about vaccine supply in Canada and new COVID-19 cases that will still be reported each day in the meantime. Truckers denied some essential services Last week, new travel restrictions came into effect for people coming to Manitoba, requiring most travellers to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival in the province. One of the groups exempted from that rule is truckers. On Wednesday, Atwal said there are reports of truckers being denied access to some essential services, including public washrooms. "This is disappointing to hear," he said. "We rely on this industry to provide the goods and services we use every day — and we likely take these services for granted. "They offer a vital service, and for them to be treated like this is unacceptable." Atwal urges businesses to open their facilities to these essential workers. WATCH | Dr. Jazz Atwal talks about the importance of supporting truckers: Doctors, pharmacists get vaccine call The province is calling on doctors and pharmacists to register to administer COVID-19 vaccines, once more are approved by Health Canada, Manitoba Health Minister Heather Stefanson said in a news release Tuesday. Currently, eligible Manitobans are receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, but Health Canada is reviewing submissions from companies including Novavax, a Maryland-based firm that plans to eventually produce its vaccine in a facility in Montreal owned by the National Research Council, if it's approved. The Manitoba government is asking doctors and pharmacists who normally administer the flu vaccine to prepare for eventual delivery of the COVID-19 vaccine, Stefanson said. Manitoba doctors, pharmacists asked to help with COVID-19 immunizations when new vaccines approved Dr. Joss Reimer, medical lead for the province's vaccine implementation task force, told reporters Wednesday that the plan is similar to how flu shots are distributed, in that the physicians and pharmacists must indicate willingness to administer the shot. "They need to register with Manitoba Health so that we know who to ship vaccine to and how much to ship to them," Reimer said. WATCH | Full news conference on COVID-19 | Feb. 3, 2021:

  11. HAMBURG -- Volkswagen plans to develop most of the software needed for autonomous cars in-house, the head of the German carmaker's luxury unit Audi said on Tuesday. The automaker is not rejecting collaborations in some areas outright, said Markus Duesmann, who as well as running Audi is also on Volkswagen's management board, where he is responsible for research and development. "But we'll make the bulk of the software on our own in the future," he said during an industry event. Asked whether Volkswagen was looking to Alphabet's Google as a benchmark in software development, Duesmann said it wanted to be at least on the same level. "We accept the challenge," he added. Daimler and Volkswagen are working on their own operating systems for autonomous cars to make sure they have a chance to compete with large tech firms such as Apple and Amazon in the area of electric vehicle data. Despite calls to team up with rivals, Volkswagen is so far planning to go it alone, pointing to its position as the world's second-largest automaker. "We have a size that makes us want to cooperate with ourselves initially," said Duesmann, adding that Volkswagen is confident it can set new standards in software development. If other companies wanted to join these standards it would be possible for them to do so, the Audi executive added. Volkswagen has bundled its software competence into a newly formed unit Car.Software.Org, which employs about 5,000 and develops the VW.OS operating system.
  12. If you haven't heard by now, the NZXT H1 chassis is a fire hazard and has been showcased on multiple occasions catching fire. Even with multiple issues in the case design, NZXT thought it would be enough to provide a nylon replacement screw which was a stopgap advertised as a solution in NZXT's first statement. After many attempts of bringing up the issues, NZXT has issued a recall for the product and issued a public apology for the mishandling of the issue. The Screw On The H1 Can Penetrate The 12V PCIe Lane And Short Circuit, Causing A Fire The issue with the design of the case was that the metal screw for the riser cable could penetrate and expose the 12V PCIe lane and cause a short circuit. The screw was too close to the 12V PCIe lane and this is a fire safety hazard. In the video below, you can see the fire safety hazard with the case as it ignites in under a minute after being powered. In a quote from NZXT in a Q&A, the initial issue is stated below: Our Design, Engineering, and QA processes missed an incorrect clearance on the 12V power plane in the PCIe Riser Assembly PCB. This can cause a fire hazard if the mounting screw contacts the 12V power plane in the PCB. Although offering the nylon screws as a solution, NZXT is working to fix the case completely and will be recalling the case and removing it as an offering. Even NZXT realizes that the nylon screws aren't the full solution to the issues, but won't admit that the screws can still create the hazard. Yes. The nylon screw kit fixes the problem but does not address the root cause. If the nylon screws are ever replaced with metal ones, there will be a risk of a fire hazard. But when asked why they are doing it, they replied with: We want to prevent any danger from coming back in the case where someone replaces the nylon screws with metal screws in the future. The goal is to ensure safety for the lifetime of the product. The transparency is only partial here because using the nylon screws can create the same issue as metal screws just over a longer period of time. Even if the nylon screw may not go as deep, the repeated use of the screw when upgrading could still penetrate the 12V PCIe lane still causing the same issue. GamersNexus Goes On The Offensive And Calls Out NZXT For Their Lackluster Response To A Major Defect Finally, after 1 year, the NZXT H1 is finally being looked at for the dangerous design, but this isn't without some pushback from NZXT. GamerNexus spearheaded the issue with NZXT and were in direct contact with NZXT. From what we have heard from them, they weren't too pleased with how NZXT responded to them and how they handled the issue. GamersNexus video down below goes over the issues with the case in detail. GamersNexus has discussed that they are displeased with how they were initially met with and said this in a statement: NZXT published its statement after we gave them a courtesy notice. Rather than speaking with us candidly, the company ignored us for 7 days, then when I emailed the CEO personally, we got a garbage PR spin response that we challenged. NZXT then posted a twitter statement that is clearly an attempt to get ahead of this story -- but it is still not satisfactory to us. This is a serious issue. In the Q&A with NZXT, their response to the question "Will you proceed with a formal recall?", NZXT said: We have been working closely with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) towards a formal recall since November 2020. We will share this directly with you as soon as the official recall is announced by the CPSC. After 1 year of a faulty being on the market NZXT is finally owning up to the issue and working to fix it, but this should have been resolved sooner. The CEO of NZXT, Johnny Hou, issued this apology letter: To our community, We’re sorry. The nylon screws were not the complete solution for the H1 fire hazard; they didn’t address the root cause of the issue. We didn’t account for scenarios where someone could replace the nylon screws with metal ones unknowingly. Our execution did not live up to the quality that our community has come to expect from us. We will be removing the H1 from the NZXT Store and NZXT BLD. We’re going to send out redesigned PCIe Gen3 Riser Assemblies for current H1s and we’re going to help with installation for those who need it. Going forward, we’re instituting more robust and thorough design processes. From the initial designs, QA, to additional testing, we’re committed to quality in both our products and our response to your concerns. We want to thank Steve from Gamers Nexus. He and his team brought the issue of someone replacing the nylon screws with metal screws to our attention and raised the urgency surrounding it. NZXT also has stated that they took the product off their store in the apology above, but that still has not happened yet. GamersNexus on Twitter are working to fully confirm that the recall will actually happen as it has been "in the works" for three months. Below is the subtweet where GamersNexus works to see if NZXT's claim of a recall will actually materialize.
  13. Train Sim World 2 is a service game in every sense of the word: it’s regularly updated with new routes, trains, and timetables. The game has grown so much over the past few months, however, that it now has three full Trophy sets attached to it – an unprecedented number for a non-compilation game, like Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. So far the game has an eye-watering 253 Trophies to unlock. There is a core list with a Platinum Trophy, but everything else relates to various DLC packs. Because there are restrictions on how many Trophies a single set can have, developer Dovetail Games keeps adding entirely new sets on top. This third set will allow it to bloat its overall total to above 300 Trophies over the course of the coming year. This isn’t uncommon, of course: Hitman 2 also utilised multiple sets to accommodate its wealth of DLC. As games continue to grow, we reckon Sony might need to come up with a more elegant solution to this. For now, the new Trophies in Train Sim World 2, of which there are ten to unlock, pertain to the Southeastern High Speed route, which is due out this week.
  14. Independent repair facilities need access to vehicle information to perform repairs, but auto manufacturers don’t always want to release it. The Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA) is one of many industry organizations fighting to allow facilities to access this information. The AIA’s history in this battle goes back many years, and has taken on a new front recently with the advent of wireless communication between autos and their makers. By 2022, it’s predicted that over 70 per cent of new vehicles sold in Canada will have this technology, and the scope of the information collected and transmitted is considerable. From diagnostic trouble codes, to maintenance requirements, to driving habits and locations, automakers will harvest a bumper crop of details — not only about their products, but how we use them. That information highway is a two-way street as well. For some time now, automakers have been able to download software updates. These go into innocuous features such as infotainment systems, to more serious components such as engine and transmission control computers. You may have concerns about what carmakers do with all that personal info, and you’d be right, but for this discussion we’ll focus on how this new wireless age affects your ability to repair something yourself, or get servicing done by non-dealership shops. Who has the right to repair? As of last year, there were 20 U.S. states with “right-to-repair” legislation that gives vehicle owners and independent shops the right to access parts, tools, software, and information from manufacturers in order to repair their products. But a private member’s bill in Ontario, focused mainly on personal electronics, was defeated in 2019. The impetus behind this movement hasn’t been about getting vehicle parts. For common replacement items, there are usually several aftermarket firms offering alternatives if you don’t like a dealership’s price or the part is discontinued, and if they don’t have what you need, there are always auto recyclers. But when the part you need is a software fix, you likely won’t have the same variety of sources for it. Many quality independent repair shops have subscriptions to online services that provide them with detailed shop manuals, part specifications, and some software updates, but not for all of these, and certainly not for all makes and models. A two-way street for information Perhaps there should be a trade-off. If carmakers are going to collect data from your vehicle and use it any way they like, maybe when software updates are required, they can all be transmitted wirelessly into your vehicle at no cost to you. Or if you’d like the choice of whether or not to update one of your ride’s computers, the automaker can provide verifiable details of what’s involved, and then either transmit it only if you agree, or send it to you on a thumb-drive to allow you control over what goes into your vehicle. All of this adds fuel to the idea that having a conversation with your indie repair shop about your next vehicle and its repairability – before you buy it – can save a lot of headaches down the road. At least you still have that choice
  15. Chef-driven home-design lines have traditionally been the realm of culinary celebrities—the Marthas and Chrissies of the food world. But the pandemic has kicked up new interest in cooking and small-scale entertaining. And so, an increasing number of local restaurant industry names getting into the lifestyle game. Chef Eric Ziebold and Célia Laurent, the husband-and-wife team behind Kinship and Metier in Shaw, just launched the Kinship Collection. The line of home goods—candles, soaps, linens, ceramics—channels the elegant minimalism of their Michelin-starred restaurants, and sometimes borrows directly from their tables. Diners might recognize the pristine, off-white ceramic plates and bowls designed by Ziebold and produced by Olivia DiBenigno of Alexandria’s Studio North Ceramics. The collection also features picnic blankets made with Los Angeles textile maker Via Verano. Ziebold and Laurent plan to add pantry items like spice rubs, jams, and oils soon. The idea for a retail line was partially born out of necessity. Creative homemade parting gifts have always been part of the tasting-room experience at Metier. There, guests might leave with seasonal tokens like basil syrup or apple butter made from the bounty at the restaurant’s garden in Delaplane, Virginia. But during a year of temporary dining-room closures and pivots to comfort food, the garden’s wealth of herbs and flowers had threatened to go unused. “We couldn’t keep up with harvesting. Stuff was blossoming and overgrown,” Ziebold says. So, he started making ferments and gallons of vinegar. And then, essential oils and lavender soaps. Next came soy wax candles—a fragrant blend of lavender, yarrow, and rue—that were hand-poured at the restaurant during pandemic downtime. Now, the candles scent the restaurants’ bathrooms—and can be bought for $46. “I walked in the bathroom and it smells so nice,” says Ziebold. “That’s the kind of thing we focus on at Kinship and Metier. How do you make someone happier coming back from the bathroom than they were when they left the table? The fact we were able to make it ourselves is very gratifying.” While the Kinship Collection focuses more on decor, chef/restaurateur Spike Mendelsohn is channeling his expertise into a new home-design brand. The owner of fast-casual spots Good Stuff Eatery, We the Pizza, and Plnt Burger, has teamed up with Northern Virginia home builder Van Metre Homes for Spiked Kitchens, a chef-driven design service. “I feel like there was a bubble in the industry a few years back and I’ve been on path towards diversifying my portfolio,” says Mendelsohn, who made a name for himself in the early Top Chef days. Mendelsohn’s custom designs, which launched this past fall, incorporate elements from open restaurant kitchens into the home. Take, for example, an L-shaped island with chef-counter-style seating. Or a revamped pantry that looks more like a hospitality industry prep kitchen with a sink, refrigeration, and counter space. “It’s for all the nitty-gritty stuff you don’t want your guests to see, or have to clean up an hour before they come,” says Mendelsohn. In addition to kitchen design, Mendelsohn says he plans to offer more at-home services for his clients—whether that means recommending chef-approved appliances, cooking videos, and more. “Retail and design—I think we’ll see a lot of chefs getting into this category,” says Mendelsohn. “A lot of people are looking to reinvent themselves right now.”
  16. Ontario says supply delays mean it won't meet its goal of giving all nursing-home residents the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by Friday. The province says it will now take until Feb. 10 to give the first shot to all long-term care, high-risk retirement and First Nations eldercare home residents. The government says it expects to receive about 80 per cent fewer doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine over the first two weeks of this month. It says shipments are set to return nearly to previously expected levels starting Feb. 15. --- 11:25 a.m. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the government has inked a deal that will see COVID-19 vaccines churned out on home soil. Trudeau says the federal government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Novavax to start producing immunization doses at the U.S. company’s Royalmount facility in Montreal. The Novavax vaccine is currently under review by Health Canada and, if approved, would eventually leave Canada less reliant on foreign production for the most sought-after product in the world. Trudeau also says the government is investing $25 million in Vancouver-based Precision NanoSystems to build a manufacturing centre, with the ultimate goal of producing up to 240 million vaccine doses per year. --- 11:20 a.m. Ontario's daily COVID-19 case count is lower than expected because of a data issue. Ontario is reporting 745 new cases of the virus today, which it says does not include data from Toronto as the city transfers its information to the provincial database system. The Ministry of Health says it anticipates fluctuations in case numbers over the next few days as the databases are reconciled. Ontario also says that case counts for other public health units might have been affected by system outages related to the migration. --- 11:15 a.m. Quebec is reporting 1,053 new COVID-19 infections and 38 more deaths attributed to the novel coronavirus, including seven in the previous 24 hours. The numbers come ahead of an evening news conference during which Premier François Legault is expected to ease restrictions across the province. Health officials said today hospitalizations dropped by 34, to 1,110, and 178 people were in intensive care, a drop of five. Quebec has reported a total of 264,526 cases and 9,862 deaths linked to the virus.
