  2. The po[CENSORED]rity of blogging (which originally derives from ‘personal web log’) continues, whether for profit, or just to have a voice on the web, since over a decade ago when it first captured the internet as the ‘next big thing’. Some blogs are standalone sites, but others are a more personal section that fits into a larger, corporate web site. In order to blog, a blogging platform is required, which takes care of formatting the content in the form of text and images, and provides a framework for getting it onto a website. The blogging platform also makes it easier for a search engine to categorize the blog entries, and to be able to take advantage of marketing and advertising opportunities. So before you start cranking out posts, and welcoming your virtual visitors from around the world, you need to choose the best blogging platform to suit your needs. Check out these great options. Ask any old-time blogger about what platform they started their blog with, and chances are they'll answer that it was Blogger. To this day, Google’s offering in the blogging space still retains several advantages, including that your existing Google account already means you have a Blogger account. A broke startup blog will appreciate that it is free to use, and it will even provide the blogspot.com domain name, as well as the option for a custom domain name. It is also one of the easier platforms to use, and provides a choice of templates that can be flexibly modified. As it is a Google offering, it easily integrates with other Google products, including Google Analytics that can provide information about your website’s visitors that should be used to help grow traffic. Also, your blog can be integrated with Google’s Adsense, that will analyze your content, and display relevant ads to monetize your blog, so you can pay for the coffee as you sit in Starbucks and blog into the night. With all that going for it, is there any reason not to use Blogger? Well, the problem is that as your blog grows, its simplicity means that you may outgrow Blogger at some point. In addition, it can be difficult to transition from Blogger to another platform. WordPress is a po[CENSORED]r blogging platform which is used on a claimed 30% of web sites, that offers an excellent balance between ease of use, and more powerful options. They can handle all the details, and take care of the domain name, the security and the hosting for a one stop shopping option. WordPress offers hundreds of themes, with flexibility in fonts and options for a custom look. They also offer expert support, and credit card payments can be accepted via an available plugin. Pricing starts at the Personal plan for $4 (€3.6, £3.1) monthly billed annually, which removes all WordPress advertising. There is also a free tier available, which is suitable for a noncommercial blog as there is WordPress advertising and no way you can monetize it. The latest version of Jekyll (4.2) is a “simple, blog-aware, static site generator.” Content gets created in TXT files, which get placed into folders. Then you build your site via Liquid language templates. Jekyll then merges the content and the template together, and voila, a website is generated that can be uploaded to a server. For those that need a host, there is integration with Jekyll to host the website for free on GitHub. While there is a comprehensive ‘quick-start guide’ on the Jekyll website, it hardly offers the simplicity of some competing blogging platforms that can do this all from a web interface. However, the benefits that Jekyll offers are the advanced features, which include options for paginating posts, available plugins, excerpt rendering, templates, and community maintained themes. It also supports blog migration from other platforms. The plus here is that there is no cost to the platform, but the downside is that there is only community support, and the work takes place in the Ruby development environment, so many newbies will be put off.
  3. Creator of CTR (Clock Tuner For Ryzen), Yuri Bubliy (1usmus), has announced the latest update to his tool which would let users running AMD Ryzen 5000 Zen 3 Desktop CPUs to hit 5.0 GHz clocks. The new CTR 2.1 update also brings a range of features and upgrades to the CTR user interface to make things easier for users. It Is Now Possible To Hit 5.0 GHz Clock Speeds on AMD Ryzen 5000 'Zen 3' Desktop CPUs, All Thanks To CTR 2.1 (Clock Tuner For Ryzen) Update CTR (Clock Tuner For Ryzen) has seen extensive development over the past few months and the latest update should make the 5 GHz dream clock possible for many users who are running the AMD Ryzen 5000 Desktop CPU. There is a range of features that are part of the new Hybrid OC mode but the primary one is the PX Profile which is said to be the best solution for games, benchmarks, and general workloads. The PX Profile delivers a stable fixed (and effective) frequency, which is not affected by any limits, Thermal EDC throttling, temperature throttling, or stretching. Using the PX Profile, you can get higher clocks while running the chip at lower voltages than what you get out of the box. It's said to be both safe and easy to set up. Following are the main highlights of the CTR 2.1 (Clock Tuner For AMD Ryzen) update: CTR will automatically find the best cores for PX PROFILE during the diagnostic (for AMD Ryzen 5900X and 5600X-4 maximum, for 5950X and 5800X — 6, and for Zen 2 — 2 temporary maximum). There is no increase in diagnostic time. You will see the result on the PROFILES page. CTR will automatically set the frequency for all recommended cores (it also happens during diagnostics). All other cores that are not in the group will run at a reduced frequency. Due to this maximum stability and fault tolerance are achieved. Since the processor very often works with a combined load of 1-6 cores, a high speed of load evaluation is needed to switch profiles as accurately as possible. Depending on the current operating profile, the sensor polling rate also changes. PX PROFILE is the most sensitive, the sensor polling period is every 150ms (for P1 — 250 and for P2 - 200). The updated HYBRID OC has a reduced profile activation time. For processors with 6, 12, or 24 cores P1 or P2 activation time is reduced by 30%. Updated priority system. P1 PROFILE has a higher priority than P2. P2 PROFILE has a higher priority than PX. This makes it possible to avoid frequent or false profile switching. It also allows you to significantly reduce the temperature of the processor. PX PROFILE has holding settings just like the other profiles. This will avoid a false shutdown of the profile if the load on the cores is pulsed. If the current TDC value is lower than the TDC trigger (A), PX PROFILE will automatically be disabled and the AMD Ryzen 5000 processor will go into standard boost mode. That is, in this mode the maximum power saving is maintained. Improved security. While HYBRID OC is running, CTR will monitor the current-voltage. If this value exceeds 1.525V- CTR will automatically restart the system without user confirmation. I believe that some users may ignore the instructions, so I have updated the rules for the security system. Checking stuck sensors. There are situations when a sensor stops responding. At this point, the user may see an abnormal temperature, frequency, or voltage value. I have implemented a system that analyzes the state of the sensor.Another upgrade comes to the visual interface which gets a more minimalistic look. Each button has multiple functions and there's also a neat Rocket icon that lets you know which CTR profile is currently running on your system. Overall, AMD Ryzen 5000 Zen 3 Desktop CPU owners can now be able to hit 5 GHz with relative ease compared to before. The CTR 2.1 release will be available first to Patreon subs but is going to get a release for the general public very soon!
  4. There’s an audience for practically any pastime – we travelled all the way to Germany to check out Bus Simulator in those heady pre-pandemic days – so we’re not overly surprised to see Roadside Assistance Simulator given the greenlight. Due out on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in 2023 – that’s not a typing error – the title will supposedly “draw experience from the best-selling Car Mechanic Simulator series”, allowing you to tend to all manner of vehicular breakdown scenarios. In addition to towing away damaged cars, you’ll also be responsible for roadside repairs, like replacing flat tires and jump-starting depleted batteries. “The gameplay will also include a whole range of additional elements – you will need to, among others, quickly get to the scene of the accident, fight the competition to gain a better share of the market, maintain a tow truck or a car with a beaver tail trailer, as well as upgrade and expand your car repair shop,” the press release reads. You can check out what appears to be a concept trailer embedded above, with Polish studio 3T Games leading on development duties. The project seems seriously early right now, but clearly there’s a market for this type of title; the press release name drops Car Mechanic Simulator multiple times, so it’s wearing its inspiration brazenly on its overalls here. Do you like these kind of games? Call the AA in the comments section below.
  5. The electric car industry is about to become the greatest thing since sliced bread… or so a lot of people would have you believe. The truth is something different. As automakers and tech start-ups fall over themselves on the incredible future of electric powered vehicles, the hype needs to be unplugged to truly understand what’s going on. Vehicles powered by electricity, rather than gasoline, may eventually come to rule to business but it’s unlikely to be anytime soon. Two august national newspapers, The New York Times NYT -1.1% NYT -1.1% and the Wall Street Journal, both ran large articles in the past few days pointing to the oncoming traffic in electric vehicles. “Electric Cars Are Gaining Ground,” the Times wrote while the Journal had a full page story on “The New Electric Vehicles Hitting the Road.” Both went on to report on how the future of these forms of transportation was now here and all we had to do was head to our local dealership to trade in our old gas guzzlers for the latest, greatest thing on four wheels. But if you read on, you saw a somewhat different portrayal of the state of the electric vehicle market. • Electric vehicle sales in the U.S. actually fell last year, dropping by about 10% the Journal said. True, the overall car industry had a tough year but one would think sales would still be rising if the hype were really true. • While every automaker and all kinds of techy start-ups are entering the market, the fact is that 80% of all electrics sold in the U.S. carry the Tesla TSLA +0.5% TSLA +0.5% brand. Its head start in the field is the four-wheeled equivalent of Amazon’s AMZN +0.5% AMZN +0.5% early domination of e-commerce while traditional retailers stood back and watched. Now competitors like Walmart WMT +0.3% WMT +0.3%, Targ TGT +0.5%et TGT +0.5% and others are in a mad dash to try to catch up, the same position most legacy auto makers now find themselves in. MORE FOR YOU Retail Scorecard: Gap, Kohl’s Join Reopeners; Ulta, Bed Bath & Beyond, Others Remain Closed There Are Fewer Sears And Kmart Stores Left Than You Think How Many Sears And Kmarts Will Be Left By 2021’s End? • General Motors GM +0.2% has said it will convert its entire range of vehicles to electric power by 2035. That’s 14 model years away which is a while but right now GM’s GM +0.2% offerings border on the pathetic. This is especially ironic as GM tested an electric car called the EV1 that was in limited production in the late 1990s…25 years ago. Right now, its electric vehicles, the Chevy Bolt and Volt, have been sales embarrassments, each selling less than 5,000 units in their last full years of production. And its next electrics are probably not going to move that voltmeter much either: the Hummer SUV won’t debut until the 2022 model year and will retail for just over $110,000. The Cadillac Lyriq will show up probably the year after and be priced at about $60,000 according to reports, but the brand’s lackluster sales over the past decade aren’t hopeful for big numbers of this new model. • On the other side of the Detroit area, Ford has said it too will go electric but again its current offerings consist largely of the new Mustang Mach-E, an SUV bearing the iconic sportscar’s brand. While it is more reasonably priced — starting at around $43,000 — it is a lonely entry on the company’s model line-up that is dominated by gas-powered or hybrid pickup trucks and vans. • Other global automotive powerhouses are just barely getting into the electrics sector. Korea’s Hyundai is only launching its first EV sub-brand, Ioniq, this year even though it said it expects to sell one million electrics by 2025. Volkswagen said it is spending $42 billion on electrics over the next five years yet it too will only bring its first battery-powered SUV to the U.S. market this year. Nissan, one of the earlier makers to enter the EV market with the Leaf introduced in 2010, has pretty much dropped the ball ever since and is now counting on its new Ariya to try and pick up the slack. • Tech start-ups like Rivian and Lucid are getting lots of attention for their upcoming debuts but at $75,000 and $169,000, respectively, for their first models sales will be modest to say the least. • Big luxury brands like Audi and Mercedes Benz have new models on their way as well but they will also be in the six-figure range…for their starting prices. • Even Tesla’s newest vehicle, a pick-up called the Cybertruck, is expected to start at around $40,000 but a long-range version will be closer to $70,000 and the company has historically been loose on its pricing forecasting. The cold hard facts are that the average price of a car or light truck in the U.S. was around $38,000 last year according to Kelly Blue Book and while any new technology generally comes in at the premium end of the pricing spectrum and then gradually works its way down to more moderate levels, it is a process that takes many years. While Tesla did indeed sell nearly half a million vehicles last year, that came 11 years after it sold its first one. Meaning that these forecasts for the explosion of the EV market — the Journal calls it a “battery-powered boom” — may be overly optimistic. Electric powered vehicles do appear to be the vehicles of tomorrow. But it’s still today.

  7. WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Basketball legend Michael Jordan is donating $10 million to launch two medical clinics in underserved communities near his hometown in North Carolina, a regional health care system announced Monday. The Novant Health clinics are set to open in early 2022 in New Hanover County along North Carolina's southeastern coast, according to a statement from the system. The gift marks one of the largest ever from the Basketball Hall of Fame athlete, news outlets reported. Jordan previously gave $7 million to open Michael Jordan Family Clinics in Charlotte in 2019 and 2020. Those clinics have since seen more than 4,500 patients and have administered nearly 1,000 COVID-19 vaccines, Novant Health said. “I am very proud to once again partner with Novant Health to expand the Family Clinic model to bring better access to critical medical services in my hometown,” Jordan said in a statement. “Everyone should have access to quality health care, no matter where they live, or whether or not they have insurance." Novant said the new clinics would bring services to “more rural and rural-adjacent communities” and to those who are uninsured or underinsured. Jordan grew up in Wilmington before going on to play at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He later played 15 seasons in the NBA, winning six championships with the Chicago Bulls. “Wilmington holds a special place in my heart and it’s truly gratifying to be able to give back to the community that supported me throughout my life," he said. 8. Algeria’s dream of creating thousands of jobs has collapsed and the country is in dire need of new vehicles ALGIERS: Shuttered assembly plants, jailed bosses, laid-off workers. Algeria’s once ambitious plans to create a flagship auto industry have turned into a fiasco. The country’s recent years of political turmoil have also seen its foreign joint venture factories close and cronies of its ousted president Abdelaziz Bouteflika end up behind bars. Algeria’s dream of creating thousands of jobs has collapsed and the country is in dire need of new vehicles. The government is putting on a brave face. Industry Minister Ferhat-Ait Ali pledged last month that it is “preparing the revival of this industry on solid foundations, which break with the practices of the past.” Algeria’s auto industry was born in 2012 when French maker Renault partnered with the government in Algiers to build the first plant two years later near Oran, the country’s second biggest city. Other companies followed suit. South Korea’s Hyundai opened its assembly plant in 2016 in Tiaret, and Germany’s Volkswagen started operations the next year in Relizane. The sector became a priority as the North African country sought to reduce imports, compete in the sector with regional rival Morocco, and diversify its economy in the face of falling oil revenues, which had been the source of over 90 percent of its export earnings. Morocco’s own bet on the automobile industry has paid off. It is now the country’s top export sector after the Renault-Nissan group opened two factories in the kingdom in 2012 and 2019, followed by its rival PSA, which opened one in 2019, attracted by incentivising fiscal and customs policies. But Algeria’s industry became embroiled in controversy from early 2017, when authorities started to denounce as “disguised imports” the practice of foreign carmakers bringing in “semi knocked-down” (SKD) units. SKD units are partially stripped down at the origin and reassembled on arrival, requiring minimal labor input. The government investigated Hyundai after images spread on social media showed almost completely-built imported models that required little more work than putting on the wheels. In July 2017, former industry minister Mahdjoub Bedda, who is now in prison on graft charges related to the wider scandal, suspended all new car assembly projects. After Bouteflika, under pressure from mass demonstrations, was ousted by the army in April 2019, several assembly plant bosses were convicted of corruption. His successor, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, pledged to review the entire auto sector as soon as he came to power in December that year. “Some projects cannot be described as an industry because they are simply disguised imports,” he charged the day after his election. Algeria then banned the import of spare parts for assembly plants, sounding the death knell for the young industry already struggling after the incarceration of its key executives. Volkswagen suspended production indefinitely in December 2019 and put 700 employees on technical unemployment. In May 2020, the Algerian subsidiary of South Korea’s Kia closed its assembly line, throwing 1,200 employees out of work. The automobile scandal was at the heart of the first major corruption trials of the post-Bouteflika era. They exposed that companies owned by tycoons linked to Bouteflika’s inner circle were favored and benefited from undue privileges, such as state incentives and tax exemptions. The scandal led to the imprisonment of former prime ministers Ahmed Ouyahia and Abdelmalek Sellal and two industry ministers. The ex-premiers were convicted of “misappropriation of public funds, abuse of power and granting undue privileges” as well as illegal financing of ailing Bouteflika’s aborted 2019 re-election bid. Corporate heavyweights, such as Mahieddine Tahkout, owner of the Hyundai plant, and VW factory owner Mourad Oulmi, also received heavy prison sentences in separate cases. Seeking to prevent a repetition of the debacle, the government adopted new rules last August, notably requiring that vehicles sold in Algeria contain 30 percent locally manufactured parts. Industry experts have, however, warned that such rules are unrealistic. “It is illusory to claim to be setting up an automobile industry without (local) know-how,” said journalist Mourad Saadi, who has reported on the auto industry since 1999. Saadi said the automobile assembly sector had failed mainly because Algeria lacks suppliers who can manufacture locally made parts. Ali, the industry minister, already under fire for delays in drawing up the new rules, recently spoke of talks “with German and other global operators to launch a real industry for tourist and utility vehicles.” But, for the moment, no manufacturers have taken the plunge back into Algeria. Mohamed Yadadden, a former executive turned consultant, said setting up “a real production plant requires on average of five to 10 years to respond to the industrial challenges.” He also said it would need to build at least 150,000 units a year to guarantee profitability — no mean feat in Algeria, a country of 43 million people, where total demand is estimated at 450,000 units a year.
  9. DEAR ABBY: I met my wife when we were very young and into partying. We're now middle-aged and heading in different directions. I focus on physical and mental well-being. I work out daily, eat healthy and maintain a positive attitude. She spends her free time lying around, drinking, smoking and constantly exposing herself to negativity through the internet. She's now on medication for depression and anxiety. My attempts at discussion are mostly met with anger and defensiveness or are dismissed as "a bad time to talk." I feel we have reached a crossroads in our health. I want her to be as fit and healthy as possible so we can enjoy our golden years together. How do I get her to join me in a healthier lifestyle before it's too late? — WILLING IN WASHINGTON DEAR WILLING: Your wife may have reached a fork in the road of her life. If your description is accurate, you are living with a woman who is depressed, angry, defensive, anxious and self-destructive. A way to get her to join you in a healthier lifestyle would be to convince her that her own path to wellness will begin with consulting a mental health professional before it is too late and the damage she is doing to herself becomes irreversible. When you do, make sure she knows you are saying it because you love her and want to enjoy a long and happy life with her — something that is clearly not happening for her right now. If she still refuses, then continue doing what you're doing, recognizing you cannot save someone who refuses to help herself. DEAR ABBY: My best friend is retired and alone, as am I. She recently moved next door so we can help each other if needed. Since COVID, we feel safe seeing each other because we never go out in public places and all our shopping is done with delivery or curbside pickup. She doesn't like to cook, but I love to, so most evenings she's invited to dinner. She comes over about four times a week and usually takes home the leftovers for the other nights. What bothers me is I usually eat dinner at the same time, and I remind her of it each time I invite her, yet she's invariably late. At first it was just a minute or two, but it's getting later and later. Tonight I waited 20 minutes for her. I time my dishes to the minute, and I like my food hot and not overcooked. I don't want to make a big deal out of this, but I'm becoming increasingly irritated. Any suggestions on how I can get the message across without jeopardizing our friendship? — FRESH MEALS IN THE MIDWEST DEAR FRESH: Your friend may be disorganized or just plain thoughtless. The next time you invite her, tell her that because you like your dinner hot — and not overcooked — you will start eating at the appointed time and no longer continue to wait for her. You don't have to be mean about it, just firm, and then follow through. Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. 11. Google has released an update to its email service Gmail that should help users locate specific messages more efficiently. In a blog post, the company details a tweak to the Gmail search function, which will now also collect results linked with email aliases, often used to create shared inboxes. “When you search for an email address in Gmail, we’ll now show all emails associated with that specific email address and any aliases it’s part of,” Google explains. “These results will be pulled from the to, from, cc, and bcc fields, or anywhere in the email.” We've built a list of the best email clients on the market Here's our list of the best office software right now Check out our list of the best email hosting services available The update has already been rolled out to all Google Workspace customers, but it is unclear whether users of the free Gmail service will benefit. The firm has not yet responded to our request for clarification. Gmail search update As Google describes it, “an email alias is an alternate address for receiving mail, used in addition to a user’s primary address”. And there are a number of different ways users might put this feature to use. For example, aliases allow for messages to be delivered to multiple people at once; all members of a specific business department, for instance. They also provide a way for anyone that has married into a new name or whose company has undergone a rebrand to switch their address without creating a new account. However, searching for emails sent to or from email aliases was previously a little difficult, often requiring the user to run searches for each individual alias associated with the person whose email they are trying to locate. According to Google, the Gmail update will make search results more comprehensive, minimizing the chances that multiple searches will need to be performed, which anyone with a particular overcrowded inbox will celebrate. Users that would prefer to receive a more concise set of search results, meanwhile, can enclose the query or specific email address in quotation marks. 12. NVIDIA's upcoming RTX 3060 was an excellent value proposition. With 3584 CUDA cores, its performance was firmly positioned between the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti, and the $329 MSRP made it one of the best bang for buck cards around. Unfortunately for gamers, GPUs in 2021 remains a pipedream for most. Some European retailers have already marked the card upwards of $600 USD (EUR 499) which is almost two times the premium over NVIDIA's MSRP and 50% over official European MSRP. European retailers hike up prices of the upcoming RTX 3060 by almost 50% over the official EU MSRP The price hike was spotted by Videocardz user The Determinator and posted by WhyCry. While NVIDIA tries to make vendors stick to its MSRP by allocating cards to vendors that will fulfill preorders at MSRP, retailers have adopted the tactic of canceling said preorders and forcing customers to reorder at inflated prices. You can argue here that NVIDIA can't really do anything else in this situation while staying under the rules of a free market. While it can limit or restrict future supply to these vendors "at will", they can't really be seen enforcing pricing conditions on any retailer (which would be against the law). Some retailers in Europe have even hiked prices of the RTX 3060 up to a massive $835 USD (or $689 EUR) which is absolutely insane considering it is almost three times the original MSRP at this point. In the before and after comparison screenshots, you can see that the initial (already inflated) prices of the RTX 3060 versus the new exorbitant pricing on PCDIGA - an European store: We have heard that the RTX 3060 will have the most allocation out of all of NVIDIA's 3000 series lineup so far but considering the booming cryptocurrency (and mining) market and the insane demand for GPUs, it is hard to see how the free market will not keep jacking up the prices of this incredibly valuable silicon. The sad fact of 2021 is that gamers are just not as lucrative a customer to retailers as miners are - and as long as there is demand at these exorbitant rates, retailers will continue to mark these up. We have already seen Pakistani retailers sell the RTX 3060 (which hasn't even launched yet!) for $750 USD and it is hard to see how the situation will improve any time soon given the current supply-constrained environment. The one ray of hope for gamers appears to be in prebuilt, where you can regularly find premiums as low as 10% - which is almost nothing in 2021. Buying a prebuilts might be the only way gamers get their hands on some GPUs this year considering big OEMs like HP, Dell and Alienware have the resources (and will power) to enforce reasonable MSRPs. Brick and mortar stores might also make a comeback as scalping through bots is impossible at scale in the real world and you can actually pick up a decently specced pre-built at best buy. At the rate the prices are increasing, it might actually be cheaper to just buy pre builts and sell the components you do not want instead of purchasing a GPU directly.
  13. Another day, another Microsoft acquisition rumour. This time it’s the turn of Dying Light developer Techland, with speculation rife this weekend that it’s been absorbed by Xbox boss Phil Spencer’s green machine. To be fair, it’s not the first time we’ve heard this rumour in the past year – presumably because it’s one of the few remaining major independent developers yet to be gobbled up. As such, pinning a source on the story this time is, well, not easy. As far as we can tell, the latest round of reports stem from a podcast named Defining Duke, in which one of the hosts hinted that Microsoft is in the market for another developer or publisher to shore up its software offering for 2021. While the presenter didn’t elaborate, the host of a different Xbox podcast – we hope you’re keeping up – posted on Twitter that they’re “fairly sure” it's Techland. We know – eyeroll emoji, and all that. Shaky sources aside, the story gathered enough steam to coax a comment out of the Polish studio’s community manager. He said: “Techland is an independent studio and it was not acquired by another publisher.” Of course, it’s done little to stem the speculation. Many have pointed out that, even if a buyout is happening behind-the-scenes, the developer wouldn’t be able to comment on it until the ink is dry. We suppose stranger things have happened – Bethesda, for one – but the way this story has come about gives us pause; until more concrete evidence emerges, this is all pure hearsay for now.

  19. Lady Dimitrescu, the towering 9’6” vampire villain from Resident Evil Village, has cast a shadow over social media since fans realised she’s, well, really tall. It’s probably the best marketing publisher Capcom could ever have hoped for – but did it predict such an, ahem, thirsty response? According to art director Tomonori Takano, it’s all quite surprising. “I don't think anyone [on the team] could have predicted how wonderfully fans have reacted to Lady Dimitrescu,” he said, as part of an interview with IGN. “Personally, I was particularly struck by comments like, ‘I want to be chased by her.’” Maybe Takano is just shocked to learn that the Internet has the exact same fetish. There’s more to Lady Dimitrescu than just her frame, however – she’s not really your typical vampire. Her fashion sense is more Edwardian than outright gothic, and while her yellow eyes give her otherworldly attributes, she’s glamorous – a recent trailer shows her applying makeup, for example! This is all, of course, by design. “In the early stages of planning, we decided on going with [a] castle and vampires motif,” Takano continued. “However, we did not want to be constrained by how vampires have been portrayed in various forms of po[CENSORED]r entertainment.” Lady Dimitrescu, then, is more seductive and classy – she’s apparently inspired by real-world people like Elizabeth Báthory, a 16th-century Hungarian serial killer. Capcom’s art department is among the best in the business, so it’s no real surprise that it’s managed to capture the imagination of gamers yet again with another memorable character design. Lady Dimitrescu stardom is somewhat unprecedented, though – it’s going to be fascinating to learn more about her when the game launches later this year.
  20. Software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications have emerged as a new target for ransomware, and had the highest count of vulnerabilities that were seen trending with active exploits. “We saw ransomware targeting 12 SaaS products with 47 vulnerabilities. We also found that 19 of these Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) are trending between 2018 and 2020,” pointed out a study report ‘Ransomware Through the Lens of Threat and Vulnerability Management’ by Chennai-based Cyber Security Works (CSW), an official CVE Numbering Authority (CNA), along with RiskSense, a company that provides risk-based vulnerability management. The report shows that products with maximum vulnerabilities would be Apple’s iCloud, Microsoft Outlook 365, HP’s Application Lifecycle management, Oracle’s Fusion Middleware, Adobe’s Adobe Air, IBM’s Lotus Domino, and Notes. “With the usage of SaaS products increasing, we predict that threat actors will seek out vulnerabilities inherent in these applications and weaponise them systematically,” according to the report. Vulnerabilities quadrupled It was found that total vulnerabilities associated with ransomware quadrupled from 57 in 2019 to 223 in 2020. “The number of weaponised vulnerabilities associated with ransomware have quadrupled in 2020 which means organisations need to view vulnerabilities from a ransomware context and patch them continuously,” Ram Swaroop, co-founder, CSW, said. CSW, which operates out of the IIT Madras Research Park, said the study is important because 89% of Indian IT leaders are concerned about data protection from ransomware. This, with good reason, as there has been a 31% increase in ransomware attacks on Indian organisations during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. NHAI, Apollo Tyres, India Bulls, P & R Group and Delhi Medical Council have been victims of ransomware in the past year and their data is exposed on the dark web. “A few of the known high profile data breaches in India that impacted critical infrastructure are from sectors including telecom, e-commerce and public sector entities. Dr. Reddy’s, Big Basket, Airtel, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Juspay exposed sensitive data and personal information onto the dark web,” the company said.
  21. Can the Raspberry Pi Pico get any smaller? Pimoroni’s Tiny 2040 is a mere third of the size of a Raspberry Pi Pico, yet it packs the full power of the Pico’s RP2040 SoC and a curated selection of GPIO pins. The reduction in size has seen an increase in price, around three times the price of a stock Pico ($12 vs $4) but there is always a premium for compact design. The first third-party RP2040 board we’ve tested, the Pimoroni Tiny 2040 not only saves space, but adds features such as a dedicated reset button, a fourth ADC pin and an RGB LED. The board provides an excellent experience overall, though it has trade-offs when it comes to surface mounting and connecting to add-on boards. Measuring roughly a third of the size of the Raspberry Pi Pico, the Pimoroni Tiny 2040 does live up to its name. As Tiny 2040 is smaller it has only 16 of the Pico’s 40 GPIO pins. The pins that are left are carefully curated to ensure that we have no loss of functionality. However, the different number and layout of pins ensures that you can’t use the Pimoroni Tiny 2040 with add-on boards / packs that are designed to plug in to the 40 pins on the Pico. So forget about using this with Pimoroni’s own RGB keypad or Explorer Board. Rather than talk about our losses, let’s think about what we gain with the Pimoroni Tiny 2040. The most prominent addition is a reset button, which may not sound like much but there are times when we need to reset our Pico. Without a reset button we have to unplug the Pico and then plug back in, adding wear and tear to its micro USB port. The reset button connects the RUN pin of the RP2040 to GND, causing the SoC to reboot. In a huge improvement for anyone that wants to build a controller or something with dials, there are 4 ADC pins instead of the three you get on the Pico. The additional ADC is gained by sacrificing an analog pin used to monitor an internal temperature sensor. An extra ADC matters, because you can attach two analog joysticks instead of one as joysticks each require two ADC ports. Another addition is an RGB status LED, that is programmable via MicroPython and C/C++.With 8MB of flash storage, we have four times the storage capacity of a typical Raspberry Pi Pico, plenty of room for projects and libraries. The Pimoroni Tiny 2040 fits on top of your fingernail; let that sink in for a moment. The tiny board has everything that we need to start hacking Pico projects, and the USB C port is a more expensive but foolproof connector than the Pico’s microUSB connector . A pleasant addition are pin numbers printed on top of the board; these are logically numbered and their number relates to the GPIO pin number as per the Pico pinout reference. Tiny 2040 shares the same castellated edges as the Raspberry Pi Pico, enabling it to be embedded into a surface mount project but there is something to consider before doing this. The RP2040 SoC is located on the underside of the board, and it adds around 1mm to the height of the board. This will make surface mount projects a little tricky, requiring either a cut out for the chip, or slightly raised headers that meet the castellations. Overall, the PimoroniTiny 2040 is a lovely little board that crams all that we need into something that can be easily misplaced on your desk. Essentially the Pimoroni Tiny 2040 is a reduced Raspberry Pi Pico and as such all of the tutorials and guides for writing code for the Pico will work with Tiny 2040. There are a couple of slight changes. The BOOT button is typically used to set the RP2040 into a mode ready to accept a new UF2 image. However, on the Pimoroni Tiny 2040, it has a double function and can also be safely used in code as an input, withthe button mapping to GPIO 23. The RGB LED is mapped to three GPIO pins, red to 18, green to 19 and blue to 20. We can control these pins using standard on / off toggling, or we can use PWM to create a color mix. We took our tests a little further and flashed the latest version of CircuitPython, a version of MicroPython from Adafruit which has been used on countless microcontrollers. Everything just worked and, within a few moments, we had a Python shell open and were able to control the PimoroniTiny 2040. We made a quick demo that turned the Pimoroni Tiny 2040 into a virtual USB keyboard (a USB HID device) which mapped a line of text to the BOOT button. Pressing the button caused the text to be typed into a document. This feature is missing in standard MicroPython, but support is expected to arrive soon. Uses Cases for the Pimoroni Tiny 2040 Advertisement So where can we expect to use the Pimoroni Tiny 2040? Given the size we would see the Tiny 2040 being used in embedded applications where space is at a premium. It is easily used with even the smallest breadboard, and we have all the GPIO pins that we would need for most projects. The Pimoroni Tiny 2040 is ideal for small scale robots, USB keyboards and citizen science projects. Its fourth ADC pin also makes it ideal for any type of controller or control box where you can need four potentiometers or two analog joysticks.
