  1. Volkswagen’s I.D. line of electric vehicles could be hitting the streets sooner than later. Starting May 8 at noon, London time, the company will begin taking pre-orders for its new I.D. Hatchback. To juice the process, VW’s U.K. arm launched a special online portal to welcome “registrations of interest” and to provide information on future members of the I.D. family. Alert readers will recall Wolfsburg has shown several vehicles designed to be part of its all-electric I.D. lineup. They include the curiously named Crozz, Buzz and Vizzion. At that rate, the company will quickly use up the world’s supply of Zs. The new I.D. Hatchback will be offered in a trio of flavours, ranging from an entry-level trim with about 330 km of driving range; all the way up to a fancy-pants 111-kWh model that can stretch its legs up to 550 km per charge. All versions will be powered by a rear-mounted electric motor cranking out approximately 168 horsepower. The company has indicated it will build future I.D. vehicles on a common skateboard platform, allowing them to drape the electric architecture with different clothing depending on market goals.

  2. Dolly Parton has her eye on the fashion industry. The iconic singer has signed a multi-year deal with IMG with a view to developing a lifestyle line that will incorporate fashion, jewelry, accessories and homeware. "I am excited to be working with IMG on a global scale to give my fans products that they will cherish for years to come," eight-time Grammy Award winner Parton said in a statement. "You might even see my mug on a mug!" "Dolly Parton is an international icon and we are thrilled to be working with her," added Gary Krakower, Vice President of Licensing, IMG. "Together, we look forward to building cohesive lifestyle brand products that will celebrate Dolly and bring her iconic style and personality to her millions of fans worldwide in engaging new ways." The move comes at a busy time for Parton, who has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, and is the most-honored female country performer in the industry. This fall will see Netflix launch Heartstrings, an eight-part anthology film series focusing on her famous songs, created with the star's Sandollar Productions in association with Sam Haskell's Magnolia Hill Productions. Parton, who boasts 1.8 million followers on Instagram, is the latest in a long line of high-profile musicians to strengthen their ties with the fashion industry. Earlier this month, British singer Liam Payne was unveiled as the new face of Hugo Boss's "Hugo" line, where he will collaborate on a capsule collection, while global superstar Beyonce announced a collaboration with the sportswear giant Adidas. Other stars flexing their fashion muscles include the singer and actress Selena Gomez, who has a longstanding partnership with the US heritage label Coach, and Pharrell Williams, who recently co-designed a ready-to-wear capsule collection with the house of Chanel.
  3. Two students opened fire Tuesday inside a Colorado charter school near Columbine High School, killing one classmate and injuring eight others before being taken into custody, authorities said. Administrators at STEM School, a K-12 charter in the Denver suburb of Highlands Ranch, reported hearing gunshots fired at 1:53 p.m. Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene two minutes later and engaged two suspects. Sheriff Tony Spurlock said the suspects, identified as 18-year-old Devon Erickson and a juvenile boy, were taken into custody. Both are students at the school. "We know that two individuals walked into the STEM School, got deep inside the school, and engaged students in two separate locations," Spurlock told reporters. "There were a number of students that were shot and injured." Eight victims, aged 15 and older, were being treated in local hospitals. No employees or teachers were injured in the shooting, Spurlock said. The sheriff's office said Tuesday night that a ninth victim, an 18-year-old male student who was not immediately identified, had died. A sheriff's spokesperson told BuzzFeed News the deceased was pronounced dead at the school. Littleton Adventist Hospital received five patients, a spokesperson confirmed to BuzzFeed News. As of Tuesday afternoon, two were listed in serious condition. The three others have been discharged from the hospital. Linda Watson, a spokesperson for Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colorado, said the hospital was treating two juvenile victims. One remained in stable condition Tuesday night, while the other was discharged. Another victim was treated at Children's Hospital of Colorado's south campus in Highlands Ranch and later released. "Quite a few shots were fired and police officers, sheriff's officers were on scene almost immediately," Douglas County Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth told reporters, adding that deputies could still hear gunshots as they arrived on scene and entered the school. Spurlock said he believed the deputies' quick response to the shooting saved lives. "I want to think that that is something that helped," he said. The school does not have a resource police officer assigned to the campus, but does have private security, Spurlock said. He declined to provide additional information about the suspects but said they were not on the sheriff's department's radar. Officials were working to obtain search warrants to search a suspect's vehicle and the suspects' homes, he said. A motive for the shooting has not been determined, and Spurlock said officials did not have any information about anyone being specifically targeted at the school. The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Denver were assisting in the investigation. The White House said President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting and is monitoring the situation. "Tragically, this community and those surrounding it know all too well these hateful and horrible acts of violence," Judd Deere, the White House deputy press secretary, said in a statement. "We offer our full support to local law enforcement and first responders and thank them for their heroism." The school was placed on lockdown for several hours, according to the Douglas County School District. All other Highlands Ranch schools were placed on lockout. "It was beyond awful and terrifying to be there during it and several of my friends were shot," Lillian Duarte, a student who survived the shooting, told BuzzFeed News. "This was so horrible to me, and it felt surreal to walk out of the building with our hands up in the same way I saw Parkland kids doing on the news." More than 1,800 students in elementary, middle, and high school attend STEM School, according to its website. Nicholson-Kluth said many students self-evacuated after the shooting began. Parents were later reunited with students at a nearby recreation center. Speaking on air to the Denver ABC affiliate, Christian, a sixth-grader, said he was in study hall when he saw several students running and yelling, "School shooter, school shooter!" "I'm like, what ... is this real or fake?" he said. "I just ran after them. ... I just got out of there." Rocco DeChalk, who lives down the street from the Highlands Ranch school, said he was working from home when he looked out his window and saw crowds of kids running down the street. "At first I thought it was a gym class," DeChalk, 50, told BuzzFeed News. But then he saw the kids' faces. They looked nervous and scared. When he stepped out onto his patio, a neighbor told him there had been a shooting at the school and alerted him to a young man who was sitting in the grass by his mailbox and appeared to have been shot. DeChalk said he and the boy's friend helped him into his house. He said the boy, who he guessed was between 12 and 15 years old, was conscious and able to walk. He had one gunshot wound in his back near his armpit. "He was having a hard time breathing, so I didn't ask him any questions," DeChalk said. He then waved down a police officer outside who summoned an ambulance to transport the boy to a hospital. "It's just unbelievably scary," DeChalk said.
  4. While cars that come from the factory can be distinguished one from another with selected options, many of them are sold with the same equipment and even the same color. Perhaps one reason why engineers invented the vehicle remote key that sounds the horn when activated was to help owners find their cars in a parking lot crowded with identical vehicles. To some, individuality is best expressed by driving a car that perfectly caters to the owner’s taste and is entirely different from what everyone else drives. Car customization is the solution to mundane vehicles. A custom paint job is a good start and can eliminate any cosmetic similarity with the legions of others, but it’s only one of the numerous modification options. These might include raising a truck up a foot or more, installing a deafening stereo system, or making performance upgrades. A faster car with distinctive mods that make the vehicle more visible to the police may require a device to help avoid speeding tickets. Although customization can make a vehicle the “coolest” car around, it may also make it against the rules. Since state laws control most vehicle regulations, a modification may be okay in one place and disallowed in another. The following are twenty custom cars with modifications any cop will pull over immediately
  5. A new study from the University of Georgia pinpoints lifestyle factors that could lead to hardened arteries. One of the largest of its kind, the study performed an untargeted metabolomics profile of over 1,200 participants of the Bogalusa Heart Study to identify metabolites linked to the hardening of arteries. Hardening arteries, or arterial stiffness, is an independent risk factor for heart disease and death, and the mechanisms that contribute to arterial stiffening are not well understood. That’s where metabolomics can help pull back the curtain on how and when arterial stiffness begins to occur. Metabolomics is the study of metabolites, which are created each time there is a transfer of energy in the body. Metabolites play a key role in maintaining the body’s normal function, and changes in metabolite levels can reflect how environmental factors, like smoking, diet or pollutants, influence health. “Metabolomics can accurately measure the amount of exposures entering the body,” said study author Changwei Li. “In this study, we identified many metabolites related to coffee drinking, alcohol drinking, Southern foods, dietary supplements, and even pesticides,” said Li, an assistant professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at UGA’s College of Public Health. Using the most up-to-date panel of metabolites, Li and his colleagues ran an analysis on participant blood samples, looking for environmental exposures that had an impact on measures of arterial stiffness. The study found 27 new metabolites associated with arterial stiffness. “We were able to identify some environmental and lifestyle related-metabolites, build metabolite networks to shown how the body reacts to the environmental exposures, and more importantly, tested the effect of those metabolites on arterial stiffness,” said Li. The majority of these were associated with other known risk factors of arterial stiffness like high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. But some of these metabolites are food additives and cooking ingredients found in many U.S. kitchens. For example, the team identified two peptides – gamma-glutamylvaline and gamma-glutamylisoleucine – that are commonly used to enhance the savory taste of chicken broth. “Our study raised possibility that those additives may cause arterial stiffness. Given the wide usage of those additives, future studies are warranted to investigate their role in arterial stiffness.” To be clear, said Li, the current study is a snapshot of metabolites. The relationship between some of the metabolites and arterial stiffness over time is unclear, and he has plans to run this study again using longitudinal data. The full report of the findings can be found in the current issue of the American Journal of Hypertension. College of Public Health Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics Research

Many people praised Marks and Spencer for continuing to campaign for LGBT+ rights. “Love this from @marksandspencer Respect! Live & let live...looks delicious too,” one person wrote on Twitter. However, others responded with scepticism. “LGBT sandwich. These companies are really just taking any swing to seem ‘inclusive’,” one critic commented. The British supermarket said the sandwich was created to raise money for the Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT), a charity dedicated to helping homeless LGBT+ youth, and Belong to Youth Services, an organisation supporting LGBT+ young people in Ireland. The retailer says it has donated £10,000 to AKT and will be making a further £1,000 donation to Belong to Youth. Hundreds of happy customers have been sharing photographs of their home makeovers using the blinds on social media, praising them for being “simple, cheap and effective “Absolutely can’t get over these £3 blinds from @ikeauk,” one person commented.
  11. A toilet made from 18-carat gold will be plumbed in at Blenheim Palace this autumn - and visitors will be free to use it. The toilet, created by Italian contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan, will go on display at the Oxfordshire stately home in September. It is still uncertain whether visitors to the palace who want use the loo will have to queue or book a slot. The toilet made headlines in 2017 when it was offered to Donald Trump. The US president had initially asked the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where the toilet has been since its creation in 2016, for an 1888 Van Gogh painting. But the Guggenheim rejected the loan request by the White House and offered Cattelan's masterpiece, named America, instead. The gold toilet will be placed in a room opposite the one where Winston Churchill was born. 'Daring artist' Lord Edward Spencer-Churchill, founder of the Blenheim Art Foundation, said he was "delighted" to welcome Cattelan's work to the 18th Century palace. "Maurizio Cattelan is one of the most singular and daring artists working today," he said. "We are delighted to welcome his work at Blenheim in the expectation that it will stimulate debate, conversation and expand our minds." Asked by The Guardian how long people would be able to spend in the toilet, the aristocrat said: "I'm not sure I can answer that question yet. "We'd like people to enjoy their time in there without giving them too much time, if that makes sense." Cattelan is the sixth artist to have a solo exhibition at the palace, which has already featured works by Ai Weiwei, Lawrence Weiner, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Jenny Holzer and Yves Klein. The Italian's artwork will be on display from 12 September to 27 October.

  14. Play is a vital part of child development – and it’s fun for parents too. Lisa Salmon explains how to be a playtime pro. Parenting isn’t just about looking after your kids – it’s about having fun and playing too. And through that play, babies, tots and youngsters can learn crucial life lessons. Through smiling, singing, modelling, imitation and games, for example, young children can learn about social interaction. Even simply playing with common household items – like cups, empty containers and pans – they’ll be learning about objects’ feel and quality, and what can be done with them. Learning a range of emotionalism and cognitive skills, including self-regulation and language, is also an important part of child development – and this can be practiced through early interactions with others, including parent-child play.

This year's list includes thousands more schools than past years, drastically up from 2,700 schools included last year. "By evaluating more schools than ever before, the new edition expands that focus so all communities can see which schools in their area are successfully serving their students – including historically underserved po[CENSORED]tions," said Anita Narayan, managing editor of Education at U.S. News. The 2019 list, which published Tuesday ahead of Teacher Appreciation Week, ranked schools by college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates. Aside from overall rankings, U.S. News also ranked STEM high schools, charter schools and magnet high schools. Texas had the most schools listed in the top 20 followed by Arizona and California, which each had two schools listed. 16. The authors of a University of Otago report on active transport say urgent steps must be taken to encourage New Zealanders to walk, cycle or take public transport, with our use of cars harming both our health and our environment. The report, "Turning the Tide – from Cars to Active Transport," was launched in Wellington today by Associate Minister for Transport, the Hon Julie Anne Genter. One of the lead authors, University of Otago Associate Professor Sandra Mandic, says: "The report brings out the stark reality that the choices we are making in how we get from 'A' to 'B' are harming us and our environment. "The World Health Organization recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week. This reduces our risk of premature death by 30 per cent and reduces the risk of development of cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes." Mr Andrew Jackson says while we have seen progress in some urban areas, the Ministry of Transport's household travel survey found that nationally the only mode of transport that increased its share between 1988 and 2014 was car use. Recent Ministry of Transport surveys show no abatement of this trend. "This natural pressure to use our cars over other means of transport continues, with rapid growth in the number of kilometres driven by New Zealanders since 2013." At the same time, the average time New Zealanders walk for transport has dropped from 10 minutes to eight minutes per day. Mr Jackson says transport contributes 20 per cent of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions, with walking and cycling being the only zero-carbon forms of land-based transport. The authors are calling on national and local governments to set targets for the proportion of trips made on foot, by bicycle and by public transport, including national targets of: Doubling the proportion of trips walked to 25 per cent by 2050. Doubling the proportion of cycling trips in each of the next decades, with the ultimate goal of 15 per cent of all trips being on bicycles by 2050. Increasing the proportion of all trips by public transport to 15 per cent by 2050. The report's authors further recommend: The government develop a national promotion and education campaign to persuade people to walk or cycle to schools and work-places That investment is made in liveable cities and creating urban environments designed for people, rather than cars That new regulations are introduced to make walking and cycling safer The report was developed as part of multi-disciplinary and cross-sector research efforts undertaken by the Active Living Laboratory at the University of Otago. The second Active Living and Environment Symposium (TALES) held in Dunedin in February 2019 brought together experts from multiple sectors to discuss links between transport, health and sustainability.

  17. NEW YORK — The Volkswagen Atlas Basecamp Concept, a beefy version of the German brand's three-row crossover displayed this month at the New York auto show, is "highly likely" to make it to market in some form, the brand's North American CEO says. The matte-painted Basecamp, which is based on a top-end Atlas SEL Premium, sports fifteen52 Traverse MX Concept wheels and 265/70R17 all-terrain tires. It also features a custom body trim kit, a 1.5-inch lift kit with coil-over springs, a roof rack system with bike holders and front- and rear-mounted light bars. In New York, the Atlas Basecamp Concept was displayed hitched to an off-road capable compact expedition trailer with matching wheels and tires. Scott Keogh, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, said the Basecamp Concept presents an opportunity for Volkswagen to get its large crossover — and its dealers — further into the lucrative world of lifestyle accessories, where he sees opportunities for some "upgraded packages" for Atlas. "I think if you look where the Basecamp is, it gives a visual expression which you can see quite clearly, which I think consumers identify with," Keogh said. "I think what's still on the table is, do we want to add mechanical differentiation as well for a more rugged profile?" Keogh said Volkswagen's designers and engineers were "getting some ideas" about where else to take the Atlas. "I think it's highly likely that we will bring something like that as a line. We have the R line, which is the performance side of our equation. And we now think there's an opportunity for a rugged Basecamp package now. We'll get some ideas and see how it goes."

  18. One of two men detained two weeks ago by Turkey on suspicion of spying for the United Arab Emirates has killed himself in prison, prosecutors say. The suspect, identified as Zaki Hasan, was found hanged in his cell in Silivri prison, west of Istanbul, on Sunday. He allegedly confessed during interrogation that he and the other suspect had spied on Arab dissidents. Turkish officials said they were also probing possible links to the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi - a prominent US-based critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - was killed by Saudi agents when he visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last October. A UN special rapporteur has said he was "the victim of a brutal and premeditated killing, planned and perpetrated by officials of the state of Saudi Arabia", but the Saudi government has insisted it was a "rogue operation". The UAE is Saudi Arabia's closest Arab ally, but there has been no evidence to suggest that it was involved in Khashoggi's death. The two men detained in Turkey on 15 April were charged four days later with "political, military and international espionage" after they allegedly confessed to spying on exiled dissidents and students for the UAE. At the time of their detention Turkish officials said that one of the two suspects had arrived in Turkey only a few days after the killing of Khashoggi. The other suspect had arrived later to assist his colleague, the officials added. The men were subsequently identified by TRT Arabic, a subsidiary of Turkey's state broadcaster, as Palestinians. It said Mr Hasan was a 55-year-old retired senior Palestinian intelligence official. The Istanbul prosecutor's office said in a statement that Mr Hasan was found hanging from a bathroom door in his cell by prison guards when they arrived to give him food on Sunday morning. An investigation had been launched and a post mortem carried out, it added. The UAE has so far not commented on Mr Hasan's death or his arrest

You want to keep doing more." says contestant Bob Sinclair, here boxing with trainer Steve Amsden. Brian Hill | Staff Photographer Show photos Trying out a new exercise routine or diet for a week or two is easy. Turning said diet and exercise routine into lifelong habits is much harder. After several months of competition, the 2019 Fittest Loser contestants have learned that succeeding in the contest requires just as much mental strength as physical strength. Collectively, the group said that their diet and exercise routines are becoming second nature to them. The results of the contest so far -- weight loss, improved sleep, more energy, increased strength and stamina -- are tangible. Seeing their bodies transform before their eyes has motivated them to stick to Push Fitness' nutrition and exercise plan and it's what they say will drive them to continue working out and eating healthy once the contest is over. But, how did contestants make the switch from being comfortable with their old habits to forming new healthier ones? And how are they able to sustain these changes? The answer is different for everyone, but it's clear that mindset plays a large role in every story. Bob Sinclair Prior to Fittest Loser, contestant Bob Sinclair had enlisted the help of a personal trainer, but the results didn't stick. Per his doctor's warning that he needed to lower his cholesterol and that he was at risk for developing diabetes, Sinclair knew he had to lose weight. Knowing he has young grandchildren that he wants to watch grow, Sinclair determined that the time to make a change was now, before his health got away from him. Sinclair admits it was hard in the beginning, but now seeing results and feeling so much better have pushed him to keep going. "I thrive on the workouts," said Sinclair. "After you run, box, or lift weights, your body feels so much more energized. You're not tired. You want to keep doing more." Melissa Hood Improving health to be with family also motivated Melissa Hood to apply to Fittest Loser. Before the contest, Hood said she had gained a significant amount of weight and that her blood pressure and blood sugar were rising. She wanted to be in better health to be able to share many years with her family. Having watched her parents die prematurely from heart failure and diabetes, she knew now was the time to take control of her health. Although, it may seem like the Fittest Loser prompted immediate change, Hood has been preparing for this moment for many years. "It has taken years of intentional practice, faith, forgiveness and courage to be able to embrace the changes in attitude, discipline and self-care that I have been making in this challenge," Hood said. "Like a game of Chutes and Ladders, there have been strong starts, swift backsliding and outright hands-up moments of, I Quit! in caring for my body and my health." Annamarie McMurray Stopping and starting a fitness routine and nutrition plan is something Annamarie McMurray can relate to. Up until two years ago, McMurray led an active lifestyle; but when her husband passed away everything changed. McMurray, who had exercised daily with her late husband, stopped working out. Instead of cooking healthy meals, she ate "junk food," and she stayed up later than usual, missing several of the hours between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. that are said to be optimal for good sleep. McMurray knew being held accountable would help her return to her old habits. Seeing her weight loss journey documented in the paper every week has done just that. The pressure to follow through with the program was only part of the equation for McMurray. Once she remembered how good it felt to exercise and eat right, "feeling better" is all she needs to continue following the Push Fitness nutrition and exercise plan. "All I needed was a jump-start. I will keep going," said McMurray said. Ed Poczatek A life-altering event also prompted Ed Poczatek to make a change and form healthier habits. After being diagnosed with cancer and enduring several years of treatment, Poczatek wanted to make physical fitness a priority. For him, the accountability piece of the Fittest Loser has been instrumental in making positive changes as well. "It got REAL, real when I saw my photograph in the Daily Herald with my first week's progress. There is no hiding when there is that level of visibility," Poczatek said. "The contest represented a commitment. The weekly published results commanded accountability." Rick Meyers A combination of watching his children beginning to make unhealthy food choices and feeling aches and pains from past injuries and poor diet, prompted Rick Meyers to actively make changes to his lifestyle. "I wanted to lose weight and get healthy for them as well as myself," said Meyers. "Being a part of the canine unit requires me to have a certain level of fitness. I wasn't satisfied with where I was and I knew I could do better."
