  1. Summer is just starting in Ukraine, and it is looking dangerous. Kharkiv, the country’s second city, in the high north-east close to Russia, is to all intents and purposes defenceless against air attacks. Two guided bombs destroyed a DIY superstore and garden centre on Saturday afternoon when it was crowded with shoppers. As the building burned, sending black smoke across Kharkiv, Andrii Kudenov, manager of one of the other stores in the shopping centre looked on in despair. “The Russians want to burn everything down. But we won’t give up.” “A lot of people were in there as it’s warm now and the gardening season has begun. In the shop there was soil, and plants.” Andrii took out his mobile and scrolled through photos of the superstore before the attack. “Look what beautiful flowers they had here. And not a single military man, everyone was a civilian.” Dozens were injured and at least 15 people were confirmed killed, with more bodies left to find. In every war, civilians try to preserve traces of their old lives. As the garden centre burned, couples walked their dogs. In the magnificent squares in the centre of Kharkiv, cafés were open, ignoring air raid sirens and alerts on mobile apps. On the steps of the opera house teenage boys practised jumps on their skateboards and girls were recording TikTok dances on their phones. Inside the opera house, in a deep concrete basement, an orchestra was rehearsing for the music festival that the war has not stopped. Their stoic composure cannot conceal the fact that Ukraine is in its worst crisis since the first few months after Russia’s full-scale invasion more than two years ago. The garden centre attack was one of many strikes here in the north east, as well as on the eastern front, and south near Kherson. Ukraine’s capacity to defend itself depends on others, on decisions taken by its Western allies that are shaping events here in Kharkiv and other cities, and right along more than 1,000km (621 miles) of front line. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9xx15pe311o

  6. Apple is reportedly planning some major new introductions for the iPhone with the iOS 18 update. The Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to unveil the new operating system at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 event, scheduled for June 10. A new report now claims the company might introduce artificial intelligence (AI)-powered custom emojis that will show up depending on what the user is texting. Users may also get an app icon customisation feature that will allow them to recolour app icons as they want. According to the Power On newsletter by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is going to introduce multiple new iPhone features with the iOS 18. While many of these features could leverage AI, some of them would also add more customisation to the existing interface. Coming to the AI feature first, Gurman claims that custom emojis could be unveiled at WWDC 24. iOS 18 to reportedly get AI-powered custom emojis AI features have become a big talking point for Apple. The company was previously reported to add AI-powered conversational skills to Siri. Now, Gurman claims iPhone users will also see AI features when they type a text in a messaging app. iOS 18 could introduce AI-powered custom emojis, which would be outside of the existing emoji library users get. Explaining how the feature might work, the report claims custom emojis can be created automatically based on what the user is typing. For example, if a user types “Happy Diwali”, the AI might be able to understand the text and suggest a unique emoji relating to the Indian festival. The report did not mention whether there will be any guidelines to stop people from abusing the feature and generating obscene emojis. iOS 18 said to introduce app icon customisation Reportedly, the iPhone Home Screen will also get a big upgrade. Apple could ditch the standard grid for apps that has existed since the first iPhone and allow users to place app icons wherever they want. Further, users might also be able to recolour app icons. You Can Now Call the Arc Search App to Get Verbal Responses to Queries CloudSEK Says Threat Actors Are Spreading Fake Pegasus Spyware Apple Wins Patent for Foldable Device Display With a 'Self-Healing' Layer The latter could help group similar apps. For example, all social media apps can be changed to the same colour for ease of identification. The ability to place icons anywhere will also let users bring out their creativity and set icons as per their preferences. These and more could be in store for the iPhone on June 10 when Apple officially unveils iOS 18. https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/news/apple-ios-18-ai-generated-emoji-app-icon-customisation-wwdc-2024-report-5754459#pfrom=topstory
Y te voy a contar mi experiencia.
10. When one top defence official is arrested in Russia, that’s interesting. When five senior defence figures are handcuffed in less than a month, that’s a purge. The latest senior military man to be locked up is Lt Gen Vadim Shamarin, deputy chief of the army’s general staff and head of the Main Communications Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces. Accused of large-scale bribe-taking, he’s been placed in pre-trial detention for two months. Hours later came the news that a senior defence ministry procurement official, Vladimir Verteletsky, has also been detained. According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, he’s been charged with abuse of authority in the execution of a state defence order. The roll-call of Russian defence figures who, within a month, have fallen from grace on corruption charges includes Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov and Lt-Gen Yuri Kuznetsov, head of the defence ministry’s personnel directorate. There’s also been change at the very top of the ministry. In a recent reshuffle, President Vladimir Putin replaced his defence minister of 12 years, Sergei Shoigu, with technocrat economist Andrei Belousov. The move was widely interpreted as an attempt by the Kremlin to boost efficiency in the Russian military and tackle corruption. Mr Shoigu was given a new job, that of secretary of the Russian Security Council. As for Vadim Shamarin’s boss, Valery Gerasimov, for now he remains chief of the general staff of the Russian armed forces. But high-profile arrests in the ministry and the general staff reflect badly on the military leadership that has been directing Russia’s war in Ukraine Remember Yevgeny Prigozhin? A year ago the leader of the Wagner mercenary group had publicly criticised military chiefs. He’d accused senior figures of incompetence and corruption, and blamed them for failures on the battlefield in Ukraine. Prigozhin had focused his ire particularly on Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov. He had demanded they be replaced. The very public spat spiralled out of control, leading to a 24-hour mutiny. Wagner fighters took over key military installations in southern Russia and began marching towards Moscow. It was an unprecedented challenge to the Kremlin’s authority. But its principal aim had been to sweep aside the country’s top military brass. It failed. President Putin sided with his military chiefs. Prigozhin lost his power battle with Mr Shoigu and Gen Gerasimov. And, shortly after, he lost his life in a plane crash. But, one year on, a Kremlin-backed purge of the army has started. And this tells us something about Vladimir Putin. The Russian president is averse to acting under pressure. Order him to sack a minister or an army general, and he’s unlikely to agree to it then and there. He won’t be told what to do. That doesn’t mean Mr Putin won’t act. At a time of his choosing. What isn’t clear is how far this purge of the Russian military will go; how many more senior figures will end up behind bars. The former commander of Russia’s 58th army, Maj-Gen Ivan Popov, was arrested this week on suspicion of large-scale fraud. Last year he had announced he had been sacked after complaining to military leaders about problems on the front line in Ukraine. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c900qz4wll4o .
  11. Being really, really rich isn't the only prerequisite for the chance to purchase a Cadillac Celestiq—the brand's new hand-built $340K-plus electric flagship. Prospective customers also have to be vetted before they get the green light to buy one of these super-low-volume rolling sculptures. Getting on the Celestiq's exclusive waiting list is just the beginning of a commissioned build process that's more like what ultra-wealthy Rolls-Royce owners expect than anything a Cadillac customer has ever seen. To see how the other half lives, and—more important—to get an inside look at how a bespoke Celestiq is built, we were invited to visit Cadillac House at Vanderbilt. The original building was designed by architect Eero Saarinen but is now named after Sue Vanderbilt, a pioneer designer at General Motors who penned famous Caddys like the 1958 Eldorado Seville coupe "Baroness" and the Saxony convertible during a career that spanned from 1955 until she retired in 1977. The glass-walled Cadillac House is prominently situated on GM's Global Technical Center campus in Warren, Michigan. Getting Hosted at Cadillac House Celestiq customers start out answering preliminary questions that help the design team better understand who the buyer is, which obviously plays an important role in learning that person's sense of style. That initial process is done virtually, and the rest of the highly personalized experience can be too, if the customer so chooses. But for those who want to make the trip to Cadillac House, they get to work hand in glove with an expert concierge. In a nutshell, the Celestiq is a battery-electric avant-garde four-passenger hatchback that's built by hand and tailor-made for individual customers. It also features a unique platform based on General Motors' Ultium battery technology, with dual electric motors that provide all-wheel drive as well as 600 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. Cadillac estimates a full charge will take the Celestiq about 300 miles. Now back to the build process. Customizing the Celestiq When it comes to personalizing the Celestiq, it's really about how far down the rabbit hole you want to go. Cadillac has mastered 200 exterior colors, but the paint choices are infinite, as the company will color-match anything. And we mean anything. Want your Celestiq to match the Honolulu Blue worn by the Detroit Lions? Done. Have a classic car with a discontinued paint job that one of your grandparents used to own? Just get the Cadillac design team a sample and voilà, you'll be turning heads and honoring your loved one. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60897261/cadillac-celestiq-build-process-details/
  13. You already know why cicadas are so unbelievably noisy. But why do some of them appear aboveground only every 17 years? The 17-year cicadas are species of periodical cicadas, a group of homopterans with the longest known insect life cycle. The largest brood makes its appearance every 17 years, like clockwork, in the northeastern quarter of the United States. Shortly after a 17-year cicada nymph hatches from its egg, it burrows into the ground, where it spends—as its name suggests—the first 17 years of its life. When it emerges from the ground, it lives only four to six more weeks—just long enough to mate, fertilize or lay eggs, and start the cycle all over again. Contrary to po[CENSORED]r misconception, periodical cicadas don’t spend their years underground in hibernation. Rather, they are conscious and active in their wingless nymph forms, excavating tunnels and feeding on the sap from tree roots. The cicada nymphs’ emergence from their underground homes is tied primarily to temperature. After their 17 years are up, the cicadas wait for the perfect temperature before making the journey to the surface—when the soil about 8 inches (20 cm) underground reaches 64 °F, or 18 °C. This means that cicadas in different parts of the United States appear at different times: the soil in Virginia might reach that ideal temperature before the soil in Illinois. But once that temperature is reached, all the cicadas in the area will feel it and make the journey to the surface together. But how do the cicadas know when 17 years have passed? Though no one theory has been proven, many scientists speculate that periodical cicadas possess an internal molecular clock that notes the passage of years through environmental cues. As trees go through their seasonal cycles, shedding and growing leaves, the composition of their sap changes. And when cicada nymphs feed on that sap, they likely pick up clues about the passage of time. The 17th iteration of the trees’ seasonal cycle gives the nymphs their final cue: it’s time to emerge. When they emerge, the cicadas aren’t yet in their adult form. They’re still nymphs, and they remain so until they molt for the final time. Once their fresh exoskeletons have hardened, they take to the trees with their newfound wings, and the males begin their loud mating calls. And now we’re back where we started. Newborn cicada nymphs fall or crawl down from the trees where they hatched and burrow into the ground, not to be seen for another 17 years. https://www.britannica.com/story/why-do-some-cicadas-appear-only-every-17-years
  14. Saints' 11-year spell in the top flight came to an end after a wretched campaign last time out but, despite finishing one place and three points behind Leeds in fourth, it is they who join Leicester and Ipswich in going up. Adam Armstrong scored the decisive goal with a clinical finish after being put clear by Will Smallbone. Leeds substitute Dan James clattered a bouncing ball against the crossbar late on as they pushed for an equaliser but Russell Martin's men saw out almost 12 minutes of time added on. Defeat for Leeds consigned them to another season in the Championship and meant they have now lost their past three finals at Wembley without scoring and been unsuccessful in all six of their play-off campaigns. Saints' promotion means that all three play-off finals this year were won by the team who had finished lower in the league table, with the team who had finished higher failing to score in all three. Both teams came into the game off the back of comprehensive second-leg wins in the semi-finals, Leeds beating Norwich 4-0 and Southampton easing to a 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion. There was nothing between the two sides for the first quarter of the game before Armstrong put Saints in front with his 24th goal of a prolific campaign. Chances were few and far between thereafter, an oddly off-colour Crysencio Summerville shooting wide for Leeds and Samuel Edozie wasting a fine chance on the break for Southampton. James twice came close to sending the match to extra time but Alex McCarthy made an excellent full-length save from his low 20-yarder after the bar had earlier denied the Welshman. The win gives Martin, who had been discarded at Norwich as a player in Leeds boss Daniel Farke's spell at Carrow Road, his first promotion in management. Martin left Swansea to take over at Southampton last summer after a season which had seen Saints sack both Ralph Hasenhuttl and Nathan Jones and end up finishing bottom under Ruben Selles. He had built an excellent reputation during his spells in charge of MK Dons and the Swans for playing attractive football but had not managed to finish in a play-off spot, much less win promotion prior to this season. Things did not get off to a great start as skipper James Ward-Prowse was sold after featuring in the opening-day win at Sheffield Wednesday and a run of four straight defeats in September, including a 5-0 shellacking at Sunderland, left some wondering if Martin's spell at St Mary's would be a brief one. A 3-1 win over Leeds on 30 September sparked a complete turnaround in their form as they embarked on a 25-game unbeaten run that propelled them into automatic promotion contention. They were still well in the chase in April but three successive losses against Cardiff, Leicester and Stoke put paid to that. After a goalless draw at West Brom in the first leg of their play-off semi-final they cruised through in the return leg and although not at their sparking best in Sunday's final, they had more than enough to see off Leeds. Luck runs out for promotion specialist Farke German Farke said after the play-off win over his former side Norwich he would not have returned to England to take over any other Championship club than Leeds, having twice won the division with the Canaries. He, like the thousands of Leeds fans at Wembley, will be left with recriminations from a day where his side didn't get going until it was basically too late. The Whites became the first second-tier side to accumulate 90 points and not go up automatically since Sunderland in 1997-98, with the Black Cats also beaten in that season's play-off final. Questions will now linger over the futures of Championship player of the season Summerville, teenage star Archie Gray and French forward Georginio Rutter. With the backing of the 49ers Enterprises investment group, they should be well positioned to challenge again in 2024-25 but the nature of this defeat will sting. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/live/cd11vdnwwjdt
  15. Dozens of people have been killed or injured in a blast at a refugee camp in the Rafah area, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza has said. Videos from the scene in the southern Gaza Strip showed a large explosion and intense fires burning. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had targeted two senior Hamas leaders at one of the group's compounds and would review reports fire had spread to shelters, harming civilians. The strike came hours after Hamas fired eight rockets from Rafah towards Tel Aviv, the first long-range attacks on the city since January. In a statement released after the blast inside Gaza on Sunday night, the IDF said it had "eliminated" two senior Hamas figures - Yassin Rabia and Khaled Nagar - in a "precise" air strike "in north-west Rafah". The IDF said it had targeted Hamas militants with precision weapons. Hamas-run authorities said 35 people had been killed and dozens injured at a camp for displaced Palestinians north-west of Rafah, away from recent military operations in a designated humanitarian safe zone. It said women and children are among the dead. The death toll was likely to rise as search and rescue efforts continued in Rafah’s Tal al-Sultan neighbourhood about 2 km (1.2 miles) north-west of the city centre, a Palestinian Red Crescent Society spokesperson quoted by the Associated Press news agency said. An eyewitness told Reuters news agency the whole neighbourhood in Tal Al-Sultan had been "burnt". Another witness, Fadi Dukhan, described sitting at the door of a house when he heard an explosion. "Suddenly we heard the sound of a missile," he told Reuters. "We ran and found the street covered in smoke. We did not see anything." Entering a house, he added, he did not find anyone inside but later found "a girl and a young man who had been cut into pieces". https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0kkqkngnedo
