  2. In a recent RPG roundtable I hosted for the PC Gamer Chat Log podcast, something Larian founder Swen Vincke said caused my ears to perk up: the already impressive multiplayer roleplaying in Baldur's Gate 3 was once even more involved than what made it into the final game. During the roundtable, Ted Peterson, writer and designer of the original Elder Scrolls, pointed out that multiplayer games and MMOs have difficulty keeping their tone consistent—it's easy to tell the difference between the way a player behaves and the way a character would. That was something Vincke had in mind during the development of BG3. "We've been trying to experiment with that—the problem is that it's so intensive to get it to work," he said. "In Original Sin 1 you could actually roleplay dialogue with your partner, in co-operative play. We actually had that deeply in Baldur's Gate 3 at some point also. But the problem was our dialogue trees blew up so hard, we just couldn't manage it anymore. So we had to cut it all."I don't know much about Baldur's Gate 3's companions, because for me they're not much more than a bunch of weirdos who hang out at my camp. That's because I played Baldur's Gate 3 in four-player co-op, with no space in the party for NPCs to tag along and invite me into their own stories. I'd like to know what Astarion's whole deal is and why Karlach's so beloved, but I had too much fun with the chaos of playing BG3 with friends—just like I did with Divinity: Original Sin 2 before it, and the first Original Sin before that. I love playing these games with friends, because there are long stretches of exploration during which we can chat, and enough emergent, sandboxy solutions to problems that I know we'll end up coming up with weird or creative ideas as a group that I wouldn't see solo. We definitely miss out on some of the overall story, but my character's personal journey has still been satisfying. No other developer is making RPGs this ambitious with multiplayer, and I think on the whole Larian's been getting better at it with each passing game. But in terms of pure roleplaying, it would be exciting to see a system like the one Vincke was referencing from 2014's Original Sin make a comeback: https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/baldurs-gate-3-once-featured-an-even-deeper-co-op-conversation-system-but-swen-vincke-said-their-dialogue-trees-blew-up-so-hard-we-just-couldnt-manage-it/

  4. The reMarkable 2 was launched in 2020. So, it's not a brand-new product that the brand is bringing to the market, but something which was conceptualised several years ago. The tablet is meant to replicate writing on paper helping one convert their handwritten notes into editable digital documents. But given that we are all used to having wrist watches which can run apps, place calls and track your health, TVs that come with app integrations or double up as wall paintings. Or earphones that can translate spoken language and accept voice commands, the reMarkable 2 will definitely fail to appeal to the regular consumer who's desperately seeking maximum value from any given product. I have been using this tablet for several months, and I haven't switched over to using it as a planner or a diary (I'll explain why below), but I have found it useful in some cases where pen and paper make more sense to me. If you have been pondering whether the reMarkable 2 paper tablet makes sense in your life, this review should give you an answer. reMarkable 2 Review: Price in India The reMarkable 2 in India can be purchased as a bundle at Rs. 43,999. You get the reMarkable 2 paper tablet and the Marker Pen Plus accessory, which comes with a built-in eraser. The second bundle, which I received for review, is called the reMarkable 2 Bundle with Folio. It is available at Rs. 53,999 and adds a Book Folio cover for basic protection. reMarkable also sent across their Type Folio Keyboard cover, which was launched in 2023, for review. It's available in two finishes, Ink Black and Sepia Brown. I received the Sepia Brown cover for review, which is priced at Rs. 19,499 officially. reMarkable 2 Review: Design and accessories Starting with the accessories, reMarkable only has the Marker Plus pen on sale in India. It does not use a battery and so needs no charging. It has a built-in eraser with a slightly rounded head. The pen comes with 9 extra tips in its packaging, which provides plenty of mileage even for serious or heavy users. The optional Book Folio cover offers basic protection for the reMarkable 2's display, so those looking to protect it from drops will have to look up third-party accessories. The reMarkable 2 Tablet Isn’t Meant to Replace an iPad The Type Folio cover is rather interesting. While it appears like a typical tablet cover made from artificial leather and plastic, it is quite an engineering marvel. Just like the Marker Plus pen, it does not have a battery, and so does not require charging. I t draws power via five pogo pins located inside the area where the paper tablet attaches. When closed, the Tan Brown cover appears just like any other tablet folio case. In fact, it's really hard to tell that there's a keyboard hidden just below the paper tablet. The Type Folio has three positions in all. There's the first one, where the front flap (which otherwise protects the display) is wrapped around the back, making it ideal for taking hand-written notes when laid flat on your lap or a table. Advertisement Next, there's a second angle that I call the "typing mode", with the tablet standing up and the keyboard exposed below it, which is ideal just for distraction-free typing. There is a third mode, which I call the "review mode." This mode keeps the tablet at a less slanted angle with the keyboard exposed for typing while also letting one write comfortably by resting one's palm on display instead of keeping one's hand floating in the air when in "typing mode." One detail that I did miss was the paper tablet's ability to wake up when opening the Type Folio or Folio covers. So, after opening the flap, you have to reach out for the power button at the top to wake up the tablet from its sleeping state. One can also choose to keep it on all the time, but the battery will drain a lot faster when in this state. Thankfully, there is a passcode lock feature so you can secure your tablet from prying eyes. The reMarkable 2 does not include a charger in its packaging; instead, it offers a branded USB Type-A to Type-C cable in the box. https://www.gadgets360.com/tablets/reviews/remarkable-2-review-5513011#pfrom=indepth

  9. Labour's Sadiq Khan has won a landmark third successive term as mayor of London. Mr Khan, who was first elected in May 2016, beat his Conservative rival Susan Hall by more than 276,000 votes - representing a swing of 3.2% to Labour. He won nine of the 14 constituencies including two gains from the Tories. More than 2.4m votes were cast reflecting a turnout of 42.8% - ever so slightly down compared to the 2021 mayoral election. Speaking after his victory was declared at City Hall in east London, Mr Khan said: "It is the honour of my life to serve the city that I love." "I am beyond humbled right now," he added. "It has been a difficult few months. "We faced a campaign of non-stop negativity. I am proud we answered fearmongering with facts. "It is truly an honour to be re-elected for a third term and an increased margin of victory. Today is not about making history it is about shaping our future." Mr Khan also used his victory speech to urge Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to call a general election. His main rival Ms Hall then congratulated Mr Khan on his victory as she said campaigning to be mayor had been an "honour and privilege". "I will continue to hold Sadiq to account, for hard-working families, motorists and women," she said. "I urge Sadiq to make London better for all our sakes." Counting started at 09:00 BST on Saturday and all candidates are expected to appear at City Hall later for an official announcement. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-68952475
  10. Developed with the full might of Toyota/Lexus engineering, the Lexus LFA, built from 2010 to 2012, is one of Japan's greatest supercars. The driving experience is all about that banshee-keening V-10, revving to 9000 rpm in the blink of an eye. This example is a future classic in white and has just 2300 miles on the odometer and is up for auction until May 9. A fun thought experiment to do is imagine what you might use to burn that last jerrycan of high octane fuel. One more dragstrip sprint in a Dodge Demon? A lap of Laguna Seca in a Ferrari F40? Well, here's one option for you, a Venn diagram overlap between combustion-powered performance and musical instrument. Pick of the day at auction site Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos) is this very low-mileage 2012 Lexus LFA, pristine in white. It's chassis number 468 of 500 cars produced, and its 4.8-liter V-10 is one of the best-sounding engines ever made. This car plus a long tunnel is basically Pavarotti hitting the crescendo in "Nessun Dorma," and it's an otherworldly experience. "None shall sleep," indeed. More on that V-10 in a moment, but first a quick overview of what makes the rest of the LFA so special. Lexus took the engineering of its supercar so seriously that its engineers had to come up with an entirely new kind of loom for weaving the carbon fiber that makes up the bulk of the LFA's chassis. Think of the same level of unified effort that went into the game-changing launch of the LS400 in 1989, then target it at a limited-run hypercar operating at the then-bleeding edge of technology. Into this composite materials setting, Lexus placed the jewel that is the 1LR-GUE V-10. Displacing 4.8 liters, the 10-cylinder engine makes 552 horsepower at 8700 rpm, with a redline of 9000 rpm and a fuel cutoff at 9500 rpm. At the time, Lexus said that its engine revved so fast that an analog gauge couldn't keep up (from idle to 9000 rpm in 0.6 second), and it thus fitted a digital rev counter. Further, the 1LR-GUE is not only a Toyota/Lexus product but was made in partnership with Yamaha. The association between Toyota and Yamaha stretches back to the million-dollar collectible Toyota 2000GT, every one of which was hand-built by Yamaha. As a manufacturer of pianos and wind instruments, Yamaha has metallurgical expertise that was often forged into the best Toyota engines, with a particular focus on airflow through the head. For the LFA's V-10, Yamaha's work was to make it sing. Its engineers did so by carefully tuning the surge tank that feeds the 10 individual throttle bodies, so that the sound feeds into the cockpit as the revs climb. A click of that column-mounted paddle shifter, and the driver is literally bathed in a 10-cylinder symphony. This example has just 2300 miles on the odometer. It has had age-affected items changed out with fresh tires and a brake flush as of March of last year. Niceties include fitted luggage and a 12-speaker Mark Levinson stereo. Next to that V-10, this stereo must feel the same way Antonio Salieri felt about Mozart. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60673810/2012-lexus-lfa-bring-a-trailer-auction/

  12. Britain’s loudest bird has had a very successful breeding year, with 24% more male bitterns recorded doing their mating “booming” noise in 2023 compared with five years ago. Conservationists for the RSPB recorded 234 males across England and Wales including at 11 new sites. The member of the heron family was mating in areas of new habitat created at the RSPB site Leighton Moss and on the Isle of Sheppey. The birds are hard to spot, despite their large size, because they are secretive and successful at camouflaging themselves among reeds. However, during mating season the male birds make a distinctive “boom” noise to attract a mate. Each “boom” is different depending on which bird is making it, so the males can be counted by following their individual voices. The noise can be heard up to three miles away. The birds are losing their reedbed habitats due to sea level rise caused by climate breakdown, so it is important that inland areas are created for them to breed in. They depend on areas with tall reeds and water so they can move, camouflaged, to hunt fish, insects and amphibians. Bitterns became extinct as a breeding species in the UK in the 1870s as they were hunted for food and their habitat was drained for agriculture. They returned to Norfolk in 1900 but suffered another drop in numbers to just 11 booming males nationally by 1997 after more destruction of their habitat. New habitats have been created by conservationists to preserve the species. As sea levels continue to rise due to the climate crisis, threatening the loss of valuable reedbed habitat in many coastal areas, these inland breeding sites will act as a refuge for bitterns and other wetland species. Restoring these habitats also helps to reduce downstream flooding risk and lock up carbon from the atmosphere. Bitterns are still rare and confined to England and Wales, but were once found in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Conservationists hope they will re-establish themselves there in time. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/apr/05/boom-mating-call-britain-loudest-bird-breeding-year-male-bitterns
  13. Real Madrid were crowned champions of La Liga for the 36th time after Barcelona suffered a 4-2 defeat by Girona. Carlo Ancelotti's side eased to a 3-0 win over Cadiz earlier on Saturday, which meant the Catalan club had to win at the Estadi Montilivi. Barcelona led 2-1 at half-time, but three second-half goals from Girona left Real with an unassailable lead at the summit with four matches of the season remaining. England midfielder Jude Bellingham has been a key figure in Real's success, having scored 18 goals in 26 La Liga games in his first season with the club. Bellingham posted on X, external "CAMPEONES!!! HALA MADRID Y NADA MAS!!!" which translates as "Champions!!! Go Madrid and nothing more!!!". The 20-year-old joins Laurie Cunningham (1979–80), Steve McManaman (2000–01 and 2002–03), David Beckham (2006-07) and Kieran Trippier (2020-21) as Englishmen to win La Liga. Los Blancos have lost just one league game this season and could potentially finish the campaign with 99 points, which would be their second-highest total ever. It is Ancelotti's second La Liga title as Real coach, having previously won it in 2021-22. Real have now won nine more titles than the 27 held by Barcelona. The 14-time European Cup winners face Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu on Wednesday in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final, having drawn 2-2 at the Allianz Arena. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c0x05j54l8wo
  14. Efforts have intensified to secure a deal for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, with talks resuming in Cairo on Saturday. Hamas said its delegation was travelling in a "positive spirit" after studying the latest truce proposal. "We are determined to secure an agreement in a way that fulfils Palestinians' demands," it said. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said "taking the ceasefire should be a no-brainer" for the militant group. Hamas's negotiators have returned to the Egyptian capital to resume long-running talks - brokered by Egypt and Qatar - that would temporarily pause Israel's offensive in Gaza in return for freeing hostages. In a statement released last night, Hamas said it wanted to "mature" the agreement on the table, which suggests there are areas where the two sides still disagree. The main issue appears to involve whether the ceasefire deal would be permanent or temporary. Hamas is insisting any deal makes a specific commitment towards an end to the war, but Israel is reluctant to agree while the group remains active in Gaza. It's thought the wording being discussed involves a 40-day pause in fighting while hostages are released, and the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly insisted there will be a fresh military ground operation in the southern Gazan city of Rafah, even if a deal is agreed. Israeli media reported on Saturday that his position remained unchanged despite the latest round of talks. But the US - Israel's biggest diplomatic and military ally - is reluctant to back a new offensive that could cause significant civilian casualties, and has insisted on seeing a plan to protect displaced Palestinians first. An estimated 1.4 million people have taken shelter in Rafah after fleeing the fighting in the northern and central areas of the strip. Addressing the prospects of a truce on Saturday, minister Benny Gantz, a member of Israel's war cabinet, said: "An official response to the outline has not yet been received. When accepted - the war management cabinet will meet and discuss it. Until then, I suggest to the 'political sources' and all decision-makers to wait for official updates, to act calmly and not to get into hysteria for political reasons." The Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Williams Burns, has travelled to Cairo to help broker the latest talks, according to two US officials who spoke to the BBC's US news partner, CBS News. Mr Blinken has also been a key figure in the negotiations, and visited Israel again this week to meet Mr Netanyahu. Speaking on Friday in Arizona, Mr Blinken said "the only thing standing between the people of Gaza and a ceasefire was Hamas". https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68956549
