  3. @ImagineWorldas1, tweeting after Louise Linton, the wife of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, got into an Instagram fight Monday. She shared the above photo, tagging the luxury brands she was wearing. When a commenter criticized the post, Linton fired back: “Have you given more to the economy than me and my husband?” Linton later apologized for her response, saying that it was “inappropriate and highly insensitive.” @malsaafin, tweeting about his eyes hurting after looking directly at the solar eclipse. Thenextweb.com reported that Google searches for the phrase “my eyes hurt” soared starting around 8:20 p.m. Monday. Do your eyes hurt after the solar eclipse? Here’s what you need to know.

  5. The Secret Service said Monday that it has enough money to cover the cost of protecting President Trump and his family through the end of September, but after that the agency will hit a federally mandated cap on salaries and overtime unless Congress intervenes. If lawmakers don’t lift the cap, about a third of the agency’s agents would be working overtime without being paid, agency officials said. “The Secret Service estimates that roughly 1,100 employees will work overtime hours in excess of statutory pay caps during calendar year 2017,” Director Randolph “Tex” Alles said in a statement. “To remedy this ongoing and serious problem, the agency has worked closely with the Department of Homeland Security, the Administration, and the Congress over the past several months to find a legislative solution.” The spending limits are supposed to last through December, but the cost of protecting the president and members of the extended first family, who have traveled extensively for business and vacations, has strained the Secret Service, local governments and at least one other federal agency, the Coast Guard.

  7. On Monday, when a total solar eclipse sweeps across the United States for the first time in 99 years, people gathering in Charleston, South Carolina, will be the last on the continent to experience it. They are ready.Historic Charleston, with its cobblestone streets and elegant antebellum mansions, was clearly a-bustle on Sunday, in full pre-eclipse mode. Its restaurants were packed and downtown parking was at a premium as excited locals and tourists -- possessors of the prized solar glasses that make eclipse-viewing safe -- strolled cheerfully along the seafront Battery promenade.Weather predictions for Monday were iffy -- with clouds and scattered thunderstorms predicted through the hours when the eclipse is due, from the moment when the moon first obscures a small arc of the sun, to totality, and through the end of the whole cosmic viewing experience. For locals, and for those who have come from far away, it is a big deal."We're very excited," said Brandy Mullins, a 38-year-old stay-at-home mother who moved to Charleston six weeks ago with her family. She and her three children all have solar glasses and are planning to watch the eclipse from an open area -- weather permitting."It's not looking very good," she said of the weather forecasts, "but it's OK -- we still get to experience it and see the darkness."Nick Willder, 59, and his wife, Sarah Boylan, aged 60, of Nottingham, England had planned their two-week vacation through the Southern US to end in Charleston in time for the eclipse. It will be their third try to see a total eclipse: earlier attempts in England and China, Willder said, were both rained out.- 12 million in path of totality -The "Great American Eclipse," as it is being called, will move diagonally across the country, northwest to southeast, providing a spectacular solar show -- again, weather permitting -- and an excellent excuse for scores of eclipse-viewing parties and music festivals. It will first be visible in the northwestern state of Oregon at 9:05 am (1605 GMT), with totality there coming 75 minutes later. Oregon authorities say they expect a million people to flood into the state for the event, clogging roadways and overflowing campgrounds, the Oregonian newspaper reported. In all, about 12 million people living in 14 states will be in the path of totality, with many million others able to witness at least a partial eclipse, according to the American Astronomical Society. In Charleston, some local government offices are closing to allow workers to avoid driving during the eclipse, and police and emergency services are putting extra personnel on duty to deal with crowds, the Post and Courier newspaper reported. As many as two million visitors were expected in the state for the eclipse. The small town of McClellanville, directly under the path of the eclipse, is even renting extra porta-potties.And what if -- after all the hubbub and extensive preparations -- bad weather should bring disappointment to would-be eclipse viewers?Willder, the British architect, seemed philosophical."If we don't get to see an eclipse it doesn't really matter," he said."It's just like putting a pin in a map" -- a great excuse to travel.
  8. Microsoft has a brand-new game console called the Xbox One X. All that "Project Scorpio" talk you might have heard months ago? This is that. And on Sunday, Microsoft said the first Xbox One X units were up for preorder in the form of an early "Project Scorpio Edition" version of the console. Microsoft is touting the new device as "the world's most powerful console." Based on what we know about its internal specs, it probably isn't wrong. But since this kind of iterative release is a bit nontraditional for game consoles, you probably have questions about what exactly this new Xbox is and where it fits into the larger gaming market. We're here to help — here's what to know about the Xbox One X:
  9. It’s the Kia Soul’s purity of mission that snagged it a 10Best Trucks and SUVs award for 2017. The boxy crossover best embodies what small SUV shoppers want most: a handy, spacious, well-made, high-riding trucklet that is fun to drive and efficient. That it comes wrapped in an expressively styled package is the cherry on top. Sure, some rivals are better at carrying cargo or pampering their occupants with luxuries, but the Soul offers plenty to love inside its quality cabin and more practicality than you’d get from a run-of-the-mill hatchback. What’s New for 2017? The biggest news in the lineup for 2017 is the addition of a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which offers 201 horsepower and gives the Soul more, uh, soul. The new turbo four is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and this powertrain is offered exclusively on top-spec Exclaim (“!”) models. Trims and Options We’d Choose We rarely choose the top trim level, but to get the excellent turbo four-cylinder under the hood, the top-most Exclaim is the only way—trust us, it’s worth it. The Exclaim also adds: • 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto • 4.3-inch color digital gauge cluster display • Black leather-and-cloth seating surfaces • Flat-bottomed sport steering wheel At $23,695, our Soul represents an exceptional value, especially considering its content.
  10. Growing up in Palakal, Andhra Pradesh, U Rajesh never saw his older brother engage in sibling rivalry. “Or revelry,” says Rajesh, “He was nine years older, would hardly talk or play and was always bent on a small fretboard, trying to figure something rest of us didn’t know. But I was a restive child, always wanting to go out to play, but he would never bother.” In a telephone conversation from Chennai, Rajesh is referring to U Srinivas, better known to the world as Mandolin Srinivas, the famed musician who convinced the purists of the Carnatic classical world that an Italian lute, associated with court recitals in Europe, baroque concerti by Vivaldi and film music in India, could present the complexities of Carnatic music. Srinivas modified the instrument, using five single strings instead of the traditional four doubled strings and, in the process, the mandolin created gamakas, delivered nuances and gave pleasure to the rasikas as any other Indian classical instrument. Violin took decades to find that status in India. While the uninitiated enjoyed the novelty his music displayed, the connoisseurs loved the deft strokes, the technique, and the passion. So much so that when George Harrison stumbled upon Mandolin Ecstacy in the ’80s, a Srinivas album, he said in an interview, “Eddie van Halen, eat your heart out”. Halen is one of the most distinguished guitarists in the history of rock music. Srinivas wasn’t in his twenties yet. His Carnatic career with the mandolin had just begun. But Srinivas passed away in 2014 after a liver transplant failure. He was only 45, with a Padma Shri, a Sangeet Natak Akademi award and praises from Harrison and John Mclaughlin under his belt. But, during the time he was alive, he taught Rajesh his unique style on the advice of Paramacharya of Kanchipuram. “I learnt some krithis. I always wanted to be a pilot. My brother said he’d help in that but, if I chose music, there would be no endorsements. ‘My job will be to only teach you. No more,’ he said. I was to take my pick,” recalls Rajesh, who did choose music, thinking he could go to his brother if there was a challenging situation. The two also played many duets. “And then, in a matter of just a month, he was gone. While performing, I still look to my right sometimes to get approval,” says 38-year-old Rajesh, who will be in Delhi on August 23 for a performance with sitar player Purbayan Chatterjee as a part of the 19th Amar Jyoti Concert presented by Pt Chaturlal Memorial Society. The organisation was formed in the memory of Pt Chaturlal, a fixture in Pt Ravi Shankar’s concerts abroad in the ’50s and one of the first Indian tabla players to introduce Indian percussion system to the West. Chaturlal died in 1965, at the age of 40. Ut Allah Rakha took over after that. The performance will be followed by a flute recital by Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia. In the last three years, Rajesh says he has been trying to find his own sound. His collaboration with Chatterjee is also an endeavour in that direction. Apart from releasing Timeless, the last live recording of the kutcheri in Mylapore where he played with his brother, and performances at Chennai’s December season, he is actively collaborating “to see how classical mandolin interacts with other Western instruments”. He’s already worked with Mclaughlin on Floating Point, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2009. He will soon head to the US for his work with LA Philharmonic Orchestra. “This exchange of notes widens my perspective of my own music. I’m trying to be my own musician, entangle myself with challenges, find answers myself,” says Rajesh
  11. Analysts went on a downgrading and price-cutting spree in the sporting goods sector as some of the biggest names in the athletic arena – from Nike Inc. to Foot Locker Inc. – struggle to clear hurdles created by changing tastes and buying habits. The rating and price-target changes came from many directions, but all expressed concerns that both brands and retailers will be challenged to show sales growth, earnings increases, and market share expansion. “Nike remains a top brand in a solid industry, but our mosaic of five data sources suggests growth and margins are at risk ahead,” Jefferies analysts led by Randal Konik said in a Monday note. Jefferies cites data showing Adidas AG ADS, -0.79% is snapping up website visits, market share, and brand share of top-selling running merchandise. Analysts also say Adidas is coming up more on earnings calls for retailers like Foot Locker FL, -6.22% and Finish Line Inc. FINL, -8.81% indicating the threat it poses. Read: Foot Locker shares plunge 28% as brands like Nike and Adidas go direct-to-consumer “Nike NKE, -2.86% has become increasingly expensive, with shares trading near historical averages, despite a more muted near-term growth profile,” Jefferies wrote. Adidas has roared back in North America, analysts said, with the company’s retro styles driving growth in the region. Jefferies estimates that the Stan Smith and Super Stars sneakers accounted for about €290 million, or 19%, of North American Adidas sales in 2016. That retro trend has cooled in 2017, but the brand hasn’t.
  12. The future is here, and it’s not lower, not wider, not sleeker, and not faster, and it wears ridiculous taillights. Look past its robot Donkey Kong styling and the 2018 Toyota C-HR is the vehicular embodiment of lazy conventional wisdom as the second decade of the 21st century dissolves away. It’s not bad, but it’s not trying, either. It’s okayish by default. Now that trunks are swiftly being eradicated like smallpox, the C-HR is naturally a five-door thing like a crossover, except that all pretense of off-road ability—including even optional all-wheel drive—has gone AWOL. It sort of fills the slots that Toyota used to po[CENSORED]te with both the larger Venza and the smaller Scion xD, with a shout-out to the Matrix. The letters stand for Coupe (though it isn’t one) and High Rider (though it doesn’t ride all that high). As such, it’s a philosophical rejection of the boxy-box Scion xB aesthetic that once seemed destined to endure and now survives only in the Kia Soul. The C-HR is essentially Toyota’s interpretation of the Nissan Juke with a hyphenated nudge to the Honda HR-V. It’s bigger than either of those—the 103.9-inch wheelbase exceeds the Juke’s by 4.3 inches, and its 171.2-inch overall length is 8.8 inches longer. Like those competitors, it includes similar features such as high-mounted rear door handles and a foreshortened tail. And somewhat like the Juke, the C-HR has the profile of a crouching chimpanzee. Ordinary to an Extreme Under that crouching-monkey exterior is a mechanical package of astonishing ordinariness. The C-HR is structured around the same Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) that underpins current Prius models. It’s likely that the next Corolla will share much of this CUV’s basic engineering when it appears soon. It’s a unified structure supported atop a strut front suspension and a control-arm setup in the rear, the latter being fairly progressive for the class. The rack-and-pinion steering is electrically assisted, the anti-lock brakes are ventilated discs in front and solid discs out back, and the engine is positioned transversely up front driving a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Consider every small-car conventional-wisdom box checked. Propulsion comes courtesy of a 2.0-liter member of Toyota’s now decade-old ZR four-cylinder engine family. It has dual overhead cams, 16 valves with variable timing, and a relatively long stroke. But it is rated at just 144 horsepower way up at a screaming 6100 rpm. The torque peak comes at a more reasonable 3900 rpm, but there’s only a meager 139 lb-ft. This is an unpretentious and modest powerplant. Modesty and unpretentiousness don’t, however, work well with a CVT. Generally speaking, CVTs operate best when lashed to modern turbocharged engines with a thick low end and a torque curve that starts down low and stays flat good and long. For example, the 174-hp turbo 1.5-liter inline-four that Honda installs in the Civic (as an upgrade to a 158-hp, 138-lb-ft 2.0-liter four) produces its 162 lb-ft of peak torque at only 1700 rpm and sustains it all the way to 5500 rpm. That car’s CVT doesn’t need to seek out higher engine speeds to find adequate grunt. In contrast, the relatively peaky and not-very-generous torque curve of the C-HR’s naturally aspirated inline-four means that the CVT’s drive belt desperately hunts for thrust. And that results in a thrumming drone that is most irritating at full throttle. By 2011 standards, the C-HR’s drivetrain is fine for a CVT. But for 2018 it feels, and sounds, painfully archaic. That said, there is a bit of fun to be found using the preprogrammed virtual gears accessed via the transmission lever, but it’d be easier if there were shift paddles behind the steering wheel. There aren’t. Although we suppose that, with this half-hearted attempt at manual shifting, it’s better half a heart than no heart at all.
