  4. The Argentine star experienced a dramatic off-season during which he asked to leave the club and subsequently changed his mind Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is keen to put his summer transfer stand-off with the club behind him, while assuring fans he never meant to cause the Blaugrana any harm. Last month the Argentine told Barcelona of his intention to activate a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave on a free transfer. Barcelona, though, hit back, saying that the window to activate the clause had closed because the request needed to be made in June, not in August, when the coronavirus-extended season eventually ended. Rather than challenge Barcelona in court, Messi told Goal earlier this month that he would drop his request to leave and stay at the club for the 2020-21 season. As his contract enters its final season, Messi's future is far from certain as his frustration with the Catalan outfit has reached an all-time high. In an interview with Sport, however, Messi has told his club's fans that he did not mean to offend them during the dramatic showdown with the Blaugrana, saying he always had the club's best interests in mind. "I take responsibility for my errors and if they existed, it was only to make FC Barcelona better and stronger," Messi said. "I wanted to send a message to all the socios and fans that follow us. If at any moment, any of them were annoyed by something that I said or did, let there be no doubts that anything I did was always with the club's best interests in mind." Barcelona began their new campaign at the weekend with a 4-0 win over Villarreal at Camp Nou. With the new season now underway, Messi has underlined his desire to put the drama of the summer behind him and focus on the club's on-field goals. "After so many disagreements, I would like to bring an end to everything. We all have to be united and assume that the best is yet to come," the 33-year-old said. "Uniting passion with excitement and motivation will be the only way to achieve our objectives, always united and rowing in the same direction." Barca's campaign continues on Thursday with a La Liga match at Celta Vigo.

  7. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson were the stars of the show as the Reds put in a performance worthy of their champion status That’s why they’re champions. While their rivals falter, Liverpool just keep striding on. After Manchester City’s slip and Chelsea’s stumble, while Manchester United battle with themselves and Tottenham plough on in their loveless marriage, Jurgen Klopp’s men are very much back into the swing of things. Unstoppable? They look it, even three games into the season. Arsenal were the latest to feel the Reds’ heat. The Gunners may be an altogether more organised, pragmatic outfit under Mikel Arteta, but they had no answer to Liverpool’s relentless intensity. No supporters, but Anfield remains a fortress; the most difficult place to play in the world. If last week’s win at Stamford Bridge was a message to the rest of the division, this was even more emphatic a statement. This was a great team flexing its muscles, going through its full repertoire at a time when the world is searching – or perhaps hoping – for signs of weakness. "We don't make statements," Klopp insisted afterwards, "we just try to win football matches." They did not even need their shiny new superstar for this one. Thiago Alcantara was not involved, and could be absent until after the international break according to Klopp with what the club describe as “a minor injury”. Without the Spain international, Liverpool were as cohesive and as driven as ever. And in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, they had the game’s key figures. The Reds’ full-backs combined for what turned out to be the decisive goal. Pep Lijnders, Liverpool’s assistant manager, would have been purring as Alexander-Arnold’s cross from the right found Robertson, ghosting in at the back post to take a touch and prod past Bernd Leno. Full-back to full-back, Lijnders says, is “the dream goal” for this team. "I loved it," said Klopp. In truth, it is hard to keep calling these two full-backs. They are so much more than that to Liverpool. Creative hubs, providers of endless width and precision, bundles of boundless energy, from first whistle to last. They press and they run and they cross and they supply, week in and week out. Robertson has either scored or assisted in seven of his last eight Premier League appearances, scoring twice and providing five assists. Since his Liverpool debut in August 27, he has been involved in more goals than any other defender with 33. Second on the list, of course, is Alexander-Arnold. They are some duo, the Englishman and the Scotsman. You can try, but you will not keep both of them quiet. And when both of them shine, Liverpool sparkle. Robertson had gifted Arsenal the lead in the first half, his miskick allowing Alexandre Lacazette to bounce one past Alisson Becker against the run of play. A rare aberration; he was otherwise as solid as a rock, whether against Willian and Hector Bellerin, or later Nicolas Pepe, whose impact off the bench was minimal. Arteta’s side had beaten Liverpool in each of their last two meetings, but their advantage here lasted only three minutes, with Sadio Mane on hand to tap home after great work from the lively Mohamed Salah down the right. Alexander-Arnold had already served notice of his threat, creating an opening for Virgil van Dijk early on, when he was given time to lift his head and deliver once more. Robertson, on the blind side of the Arsenal defence, did the rest with admirable composure for 2-1. Liverpool were behind on 25 minutes, ahead on 34, their response a testament to their powers of recovery, concentration and fitness. They could and should have extended that advantage, dominating pretty much the entire game, but were indebted to Alisson for a big save from Lacazette in the second half, when for once Arsenal were able to play through the press. On came substitute Diogo Jota to wrap up the points, the £45 million man firing home clinically on his home debut after Arsenal failed to clear a cross from guess who, Alexander-Arnold, from the right. Jota, lively, classy and clearly a workaholic, looks the ideal fit for Klopp's side. Nine points from nine, then, for Liverpool. Did you think they would lose their hunger, the desire, after climbing the mountain last year? No chance. Not this team, not with this manager. They're scared of nobody - not even Roy Keane. The fire burns as brightly at Anfield as it ever did, and with Robertson and Alexander-Arnold in this kind of form, it will be hard to put out.

  11. The 33-year-old did not need much time to show he can play a key role for the Rojiblancos after coming off the bench against Granada Luis Suarez made an immediate impact at Atletico Madrid by scoring two and setting up another as they trounced Granada 6-1 on Sunday. The striker joined Diego Simeone's side from Barcelona in a €6 million (£5.5m/$7m) deal on Thursday after a move to Juventus fell through. The 33-year-old came off the bench to make his debut for Atleti when he replaced Diego Costa in the 70th minute with his side 3-0 up. The Uruguay international needed less than two minutes to contribute to the scoring as he set up Marcos Llorente to make it 4-0, knocking it on for the midfielder to slot home. Suarez then seemed to have won a penalty for the Rojiblancos, but a VAR check saw the decision overturned. But he would follow that up by netting his first goal for his new club when he rose to meet a cross from Llorente and nodded past Rui Silva. He then scored a second deep in injury time, finishing after playing a one-two with fellow substitute Vitolo. Suarez is now the first Atletico player to score and assist on his debut in the 21st century, and the first debutant to net a double for the club this century as well. Suarez, who enjoyed a successful six-year spell at Barcelona, signed a two-year deal with Atletico after falling out of favour at Camp Nou. Reports claimed Ronald Koeman had decided the former Liverpool and Ajax star had no place in his plans for the team, but the Dutch coach suggested this week that the decision to offload Suarez was made before his appointment. “It seems that I have been the villain of this film, but before I arrived here, some decisions had already been made and I supported those decisions – it wasn't up to me," he said. “I only showed respect to Luis Suarez as a person and a player. I told him that if he stayed it would be difficult for him to play but that he would be part of the squad.” Sunday's clash was Atletico's first of the new La Liga campaign and they are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Huesca. Simeone's team finished third in the Spanish top flight last season, 17 points behind champions Real Madrid.

  15. The Brazilian was named captain for his first Premier League game but will want to put it behind him as soon as possible Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is in no doubt Thiago Silva will shine at Stamford Bridge despite suffering a torrid debut away to West Bromwich Albion. The Brazilian was given the captain's armband by Lampard on Saturday in his first game since completing a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain. But it turned out to be an afternoon to forget for Silva, whose blunder allowed Callum Robinson to swoop for his and West Brom's second goal after just 25 minutes at the Hawthorns. Kyle Bartley converted two minutes later after more atrocious Blues defending to put the hosts up 3-0 by half-time, although Chelsea rallied to grab a point after the break through goals from Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham. And while Silva looked extremely uncomfortable during his introduction to the Premier League Lampard has full faith in him to recover swiftly. "Thiago Silva is going to be fantastic for us. He has been incredible in his career and absolutely, I will not look at him," the manager explained to BBC Match of the Day. "I can talk about the misses, they are clear and I am open and honest about that. We are a team but we have to react around that and, to be fair, the team did in the second half. But, there is nothing on Thiago, I am sure he will stand up and say it was a mistake. "But other than that, I thought he was pretty faultless in the game. That’s his first Premier League game done and in the bank. We will get a lot more from him as well especially as he gets fitter and as the whole squad get fitter." While Chelsea may have rescued a draw, their fragile defence was once more called into question; and Lampard did not hide his frustration with dropping further points following last weekend's 2-0 reverse at home to Liverpool. "It was three defensive mistakes for three goals. They scored with their three attempts on target, which made it very difficult," he added. "We controlled the game other than that. We had some chances and the question was how much character would we come out with second half. I always felt we could do it, but it is still two points lost. "There was a lack of urgency in our game. We can move the ball quicker, the movement of the ball was slow in the first half. When we started to move it quicker and cut through them we became more dangerous. "It needed a couple of changes, both players who came on did that. There were positives in our performance. "But I would be stupid to say we can make three mistakes, give ourselves a mountain to climb and be happy with that. "We have to accept the fact that this is a process in real time."
