What is it? If there’s one thing that the BMW 5 Series has become particularly adept at over the course of its nearly 50-year existence, it’s the ability to make the wider car world collectively sit up and pay attention. Upon its arrival back in early 2017, the seventh-generation, G30 version of Munich’s venerable executive car wasted no time in catapulting itself to the top of the class, with its mixture of driver engagement, luxurious refinement and efficient performance helping it maintain a vice-like grip on that position since. Now, in a bid to grow its advantage and stave off the heightened threat posed by updated offerings from Audi and Mercedes-Benz, the 5 Series has been facelifted. Cosmetically, it has been sharpened up with new light and grille designs, but the crucial changes here are an expansion of the plug-in hybrid range and the introduction of 48V mild-hybrid technology on all four- and six-cylinder engines. That said, the bread-and-butter 520d was the one 5 Series variant to benefit from the addition of an integrated starter-generator set-up last year, and here we’re driving it in the UK in newly g estate guise for the first time. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder B47 diesel engine is effectively the same as it was when the G30 5 Series was launched some three years ago. It continues to make a modest 187bhp and 295lb ft, all of which is delivered to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. However, its 48V architecture now provides an additional 11bhp of electrical assistance, which should aid responsiveness when you need to get your foot down. Like all mild-hybrid systems, this allows the engine to switch off while coasting and can help to spur the diesel engine along when you’re driving at a relatively consistent rate of knots. All of this, unsurprisingly, has been implemented in the name of marginal efficiency gains, but the big pay-off is that the 520d is now RDE2- compliant, so it isn’t hit by the 4% benefit-in-kind tax diesel surcharge. Still, to any savvy fleet manager or business buyer, a BIK rating of 32% won’t be quite as tempting as the circa-10% scores the latest generation of plug-in hybrids are able to achieve. But for those private buyers after a big, efficient family estate, there’s very little about the way the 520d drives that’s likely to disappoint. What's it like? Throttle response has been minutely sharpened by the presence of the integrated starter-generator, but I’m not sure the big 5 Series was ever really lacking in this department anyway. The gearbox always seems to be in the optimum ratio, and on those exceptionally rare occasions when you do happen to catch it off guard, a prod of your right foot will make it quickly slot the optimum gear home with the slickness of greased silk. The engine itself lends the 5 Series a decent turn of pace, with a punchy mid-range that’s potent enough to provide a heightened level of enjoyment when the road ahead is clear of traffic. That said, with a 0-62mph time of 7.6sec, outright acceleration isn’t exactly red-hot. The 520d certainly feels quick enough to keep pace with its rivals, but you don’t find yourself making the most of short stretches of clear road if you find yourself stuck behind slow-moving traffic. It’s impressively efficient, mind, and refinement is particularly excellent. On passively damped, lowered M Sport suspension and 20in alloys, the 520d rides and handles remarkably, too. Drive fast and it displays an impressively athletic resistance to float and roll, keeping its body movements closely in check over rolling stretches of asphalt and through faster, sharper corners. Its steering lacks the leaden sense of weight that you find in the likes of the Audi A6, but it nonetheless steers with accuracy and conviction, with its comparatively lighter rack contributing to a heightened sense of natural agility. Grip levels are very good, and it adopts a wonderfully neutral stance through bends. While it showcases excellent pliancy over rolling stretches of road, there is a distant business to the ride that’s ever present on less well-kept country roads. Larger ridges and ruts can send a bit of a jolt into the cabin, but neither the force nor the volume of such impacts is troublesome enough to put you off the idea of opting for an M Sport. It would, however, be instructive to see how the 520d rides on adaptive dampers and a smaller wheel size. My guess is that it would be utterly magnificent. Should I buy one? The 520d Touring M Sport costs from £46,050, so there’s very little daylight between it and similarly sportified, four-cylinder versions of the A6 and Mercedes E-Class. It’s still the best to drive, still has the nicest cabin and so is still the pick of the bunch. And with that massive boot, there’s a very real argument that it’s still all the car you could ever need.

The Cameroon superstar has urged his former employers to sign the Borussia Dortmund sensation Barcelona should target Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Youssoufa Moukoko as the long-term successor to Lionel Messi, according to Samuel Eto’o. The 15-year-old has been included in BVB’s Champions League squad this season, even though he isn’t eligible to feature in Europe’s premier club competition until he turns 16 on November 20. Despite not yet making his senior debut for Dortmund, Moukoko is the player Barca should be targeting as they look for a long-term successor to 33-year-old Messi according to the Argentine's former teammate Eto’o, who was twice a Champions League winner during five years at Camp Nou. “[There’s] a young player who plays for Dortmund called Youssoufa Moukoko,” Eto’o told Goal when asked who he’d love to see as Barcelona’s next big signing. “[He’s] 15 years of age, and he’s the next top player, for me, after Messi. “As Messi gets older, we could prepare the future of Barcelona very well.” Eto’o believes that Moukoko could form a dream post-Messi front three alongside France duo Antoine Griezmann and current Paris Saint-Germain attacker Kylian Mbappe, who is another player he’d love to see move to the Camp Nou. “With Antoine and Youssoufa [up front together], that team would go forward very well,” Eto’o concluded. “[I’d like to see] Kylian Mbappe at Barcelona also.” Messi appeared close to an exit from Barcelona at one point this summer, having handed in a transfer request following a tumultuous 2019-20 season, which saw the Catalan heavyweights humiliated 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals and dethroned by Real Madrid in La Liga. The six-time Ballon d'Or winner ultimately opted to remain at the Camp Nou this term, despite reservations about the direction the club are heading in under Ronald Koeman. Barca, who begin their Champions League campaign against Ferencvaros on Wednesday, are currently ninth in La Liga after four matches, having fallen to a 1-0 defeat at Getafe on Saturday. German-Cameroonian forward Moukoko, who was ranked 44th in Goal’s NxGn 2020 list celebrating the 50 best wonderkids in football, is the youngest player to play and score in the Uefa Youth League. He has already represented Germany at U-20 level, and has scored an eye-watering 134 goals in 86 appearances for Dortmund between U-17 and U-19 levels.

The convention seeks to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries in their mission against terrorism, irregular migration, and drug trafficking. Rabat – The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Spanish Congress of Deputies adopted on Monday the security convention between Morocco and Spain in the fight against crime. The Spanish Council of Ministers approved the convention on September 8. The convention serves the countries’ aspirations to address security challenges resulting from human trafficking, terrorism, drug trafficking, and other organized crime. Morocco and Spain maintain regular cooperation in the field of security, collaborating on efforts against terrorism, human trafficking, and drug trafficking. Both Rabat and Spain describe their cooperation in the fight against organized crime as exemplary. Morocco’s state media quoted the Spanish government as saying the agreement “regulates the most important aspects in the field of cooperation.” The agreement also specifies “in great detail” the crimes Morocco and Spain seek to target with the convention. The Spanish government believes the convention emphasizes the provisions relating to the fight against organized crime, with specific reference to terrorism. The Morocco-Spain security convention also outlines the framework of operation activities and the investigation of different forms of crimes. Morocco is a country with a multidimensional security approach. The country cooperates with a score of international partners committed to continuing to fight against organized crime. The country, according to several reports, is a leader in the fight against irregular migration and terrorism thanks to its approach. The country’s security services, including the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ), the Royal Gendarmerie, and the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), work together in the fight against terrorism. The adoption of the Morocco-Spain security convention comes on the heels of a joint security operation the two countries carried out to dismantle a two-member terror cell in the Spanish enclave of Melilla and in Mogan, a town in the southwestern part of the Island of Gran Canaria. The suspects have alleged links with ISIS. According to Spanish police, the operation was carried out thanks to the collaboration with Morocco’s DGST and Europol.

We’ve just seen a video that may suggest how the iPhone 12 box will look. The footage shows an alleged iPhone 11 box – one of the new smaller ones, now that Apple has pledged to stop including earbuds or wall charger blocks with their handsets – which will likely look the same as the iPhone 12's packaging. The video comes courtesy of a tweet by user DuanRui with the caption ‘Iphone 11 brand new packaging.’ The short footage shows an iPhone box that’s much slimmer than the ones we’ve seen in past years. iPhone 11 brand new packaging. pic.twitter.com/Rv9UWo8EvpOctober 15, 2020 Given the iPhone 12 is only slightly smaller than the iPhone 11 (by a few millimeters in length and width, and it’s 0.9mm thinner), we’d fully expect the new Apple phone’s box to be about the same size. While it’s entirely possible that this footage isn’t authentic, it does look like the new smaller boxes Apple showed during its iPhone 12 reveal event. Afterward, it was revealed that Apple would also leave earbuds and wall chargers out of boxes of the iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and even the iPhone SE 2020 – except in France, where boxes will still include the earbuds, per GSM Arena. iPhone 12 mini: Apple's smallest flagship phone in years iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max: what's in store for the new iPhones All the remaining Apple Amazon Prime Day deals Wait, why won’t they come with earbuds or a wall charger? During the iPhone 12 reveal event, Apple explained why it would leave out the wired ‘EarPods’ earbuds and wall charger block that usually come with their phones: given how few people use them or still have some of each lying around from older purchases, the company pitched their omission in new iPhone boxes as an environmental measure. That's likely true, though leaving out the items is a cost-saving measure, too. Perhaps that's helped Apple keep the 5G-capable iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max prices at the same level as last year's iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max when many other flagship devices have gotten price bumps to accommodate 5G chipsets and modems. But Apple isn't wrong about redundancy: we can attest to the plethora of Lightning chargers and earbuds that pile up when owning multiple Apple products. Don’t worry, you can still buy the earbuds and wall charger blocks separately.

Bayern Munich reached the second round of the DFB-Pokal, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scoring twice on his debut. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored twice on his Bayern Munich bow as the treble winners eased past fifth-tier Duren 3-0 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. The international break limited Bayern to a makeshift side, but they comfortably came through a tie postponed until Thursday to allow them to recover from last season's Champions League triumph. Free transfer signing Choupo-Moting was among those to get his chance and the striker opened the scoring midway through the first half before having a hand in Thomas Muller's penalty. Duren, the designated home team who decided not to host the fixture, were certainly not embarrassed at Allianz Arena but Choupo-Moting's excellent second sealed victory for the Bundesliga champions. The minnows had openly targeted simply bettering Barcelona and Schalke by conceding fewer than eight goals, yet they almost struck first as Marc Brasnic nodded straight at Alexander Nubel - another of four Bayern debutants in the starting line-up - after just 23 seconds. Chances predictably followed at the other end, though, and Choupo-Moting twice might have scored before stabbing Bouna Sarr's square ball past Kevin Jackmuth for the opener. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward then won a penalty from Joran Sobiech after Jackmuth's poor clearance, allowing Muller to get on the scoresheet from 12 yards. A sublime Douglas Costa run and shot was met with an equally good save from the goalkeeper, who also kept Choupo-Moting at bay after half-time. The officials were next to deny Bayern as Choupo-Moting's delicate finish appeared to cross the line before David Putz headed clear, then Jamal Musiala's mazy dribble concluded with a low shot against the post. Bayern's new striker persisted, however, and turned on the edge of the box to rifle a right-footed shot into the top-left corner and complete the scoring, although there should have been a fourth when Javi Martinez nodded against the upright. What does it mean? Duren achieve target, Bayern advance Duren's aim was to be competitive and they were certainly that. Bayern did not test Jackmuth until the 18th minute and gave up eight shots at the other end, while Jerome Boateng was fortunate to win a free-kick after slipping inside his own area late in the first half. But ultimately, this was comfortable for the Bavarian giants, who had the opportunity to blood new players while progressing to the second round. Bayern's full-back balance When fit, Bayern had a settled back four for much of last season, with Benjamin Pavard at right-back. While the World Cup winner is a natural defender, though, he does not offer the same threat as Alphonso Davies going the other way. That is where Sarr comes in. The full-backs were marauding down both flanks here - Sarr creating two chances, including an assist, with Davies playing one key pass.

The 23-year-old is the Premier League's top scorer and England's latest international star, now he's got the champions in his sights The rise of Dominic Calvert-Lewin continues. It’s been some start to the season for the Everton striker; 10 goals, two hat-tricks, top of the Premier League, player of the month, a first England call-up and a goal on his international debut. Not bad for five weeks’ work. This weekend, the 23-year-old will be looking to add to his list. Liverpool, the reigning champions, are in his crosshairs. Everton, the early-season pacesetters, have their eye on a first Merseyside derby win in a decade. With their No.9 in this kind of form, Carlo Ancelotti’s side will certainly fancy their chances. Liverpool’s defence, exposed so brutally at Aston Villa before the international break, should have their work cut out against the league’s most in-form striker. Calvert-Lewin has made six club appearances this season and scored in five of them. Only Fleetwood Town of League One have managed to keep him out, and Everton still managed to score five that night anyway. Ancelotti has called him “a complete striker”, while David Unsworth, the Blues’ academy director, describes him as “the perfect No.9”, one who should be aiming for “20 goals this season - and every season after that.” It was Unsworth who was instrumental in bringing Calvert-Lewin to Everton in 2016, having spotted him while working at Sheffield United’s academy four years previously. Calvert-Lewin’s debut for Stalybridge was against local rivals Hyde United on Boxing Day 2014. “It was cold, horrible and Dom froze under pressure of senior level football,” says Nick Cox. “Then just before half-time he got a whack around his head where he was seeing double and had a big bruise around his eye.” Binnion, who was in attendance with Cox, and Briggs made sure the youngster stayed on – “Do not quit because it’s tough,” he was told – and in the second half he scored twice, his first senior goals. Stalybridge won 4-2. "I played the rest of the game with basicallly one eye," Calvert-Lewin says. He still has the scar. “It’s probably the game the following week that everyone remembers though,” says Briggs. “We played Hyde again on New Year’s Day, there was a big crowd in and Dom was unbelievable that day. He scored one and set three or four up. He’s just kicked on from there.” Briggs is careful not to claim too much credit for his rise since, but believes Stalybridge was an important stop-off point in Calvert-Lewin’s career. “He needed to be more aggressive, to find ways to cope with physical defenders,” he says. “He needed to be roughed up, to not get his own way all the time, and to cope with that. “It worked, to be honest. He’s not looked back.” His Sheffield United debut came at the end of the 2014-15 season, and the following season he would score eight goals in 10 starts on loan at Northampton in League One. He returned to Bramall Lane in January 2016, and moved on to Everton that summer. There has been plenty of upheaval since. In four years, Calvert-Lewin has played under six different managers. He featured regularly under Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce and Marco Silva, but it was under the interim guidance of Duncan Ferguson in December of last year that his development began to accelerate. “I came in on a Friday morning and he put his arm around me straight away,” Calvert-Lewin says. “He said, ‘You are going to be my man up top, you are going to play.’ It was the first time I had been given that responsibility to feel like a true No.9, I guess. “It gave me that instant uplift: this is my time now.” Calvert-Lewin scored twice in Ferguson’s first game, a 3-1 win over Chelsea, and has continued to flourish under Ancelotti, who was appointed a fortnight later. Indeed, since that Chelsea game only Mohamed Salah, who will be in opposition this weekend, has scored more Premier League goals. “I think he’s gone to a level where a lot of people didn’t think he was capable of going,” says Liverpool legend Jan Molby. “I think many people looked at him and thought ‘ok, he’s a handful but he’s a little bit one-dimensional’. “But I think Duncan laid it on the line for him and said ‘for a striker with your physical attributes, this is where you need to play.’ He needs to be central, between the two centre-halves, always being a nuisance.” Calvert-Lewin agrees. “He pulled me aside and the first ‘criticism’ was, ‘you need to stay central’,” he says. “It was like music to my ears because all my career I have been told to run channels. “There are different ways of being a focal point and I knew what he meant. My role within the team is to hit the back of the net and make sure I am in a position to score goals. I’m not going to score if I’m out near the corner flag.” Playing more centrally, he has flourished. Ancelotti has encouraged him to study Filippo Inzaghi, the former Italy striker. “He scored 300 goals, and 210 were with one touch,” the Everton boss says. The advice seems to be working. Of Calvert-Lewin’s 10 goals for club and country this season, nine have been one-touch finishes. His aerial prowess was already well-established – since the start of last season, nobody in the Premier League has scored more headed goals – but it is the rest of his game which has improved rapidly. Only Salah, Harry Kane and Aleksandar Mitrovic have attempted more shots this season, and only Kane has managed more on target. “There are some great strikers in the Premier League but Calvert-Lewin offers something different,” says Molby, who admits Liverpool will be “wary” of his threat this weekend. “And he offers things that defenders don’t like. He overpowers them. He must be a nightmare to play against.” For Keith Briggs, his former pupil’s rise is no surprise. “He’s done unbelievably well, hasn’t he?” he says. “I still send him the odd text, and he always replies ‘thanks gaffer’. That sums him up. He was only at Stalybridge a month, but he’s still in contact for a few of the lads from there. “He’s that type of lad, respectful and grounded. I saw him take his hat off to the England manager the other day, and that sums up what type of kid he is. He’d do that to anyone. “He’s got a great temperament, great character. He won’t change. He’ll always be that grounded, lovely lad we met years ago. “It’s been brilliant to have played a small part in his development - but hopefully it was an important one.”

Watch Dogs: Legion has had its system requirements updated with Nvidia letting PC gamers know how it runs with the firm’s latest RTX 3000 graphics cards. And the big news is that if you want to run Watch Dogs: Legion at 4K resolution with ‘ultra’ details then you’ll need an RTX 3080 GPU – or an RTX 2080 Ti. If you want 4K ultra with ray tracing on (ray tracing on ultra quality, with DLSS set to performance), then your only option is an RTX 3080 (or RTX 3090 of course) – the RTX 2080 Ti won’t suffice. (In the latter case, the CPU requirements on the Intel front have also been upped to a Core i9-9900K from a 9700K). We show you how to build a PC These are the best gaming monitors Best PC games: the must-play titles you don’t want to miss What’s interesting here is that Nvidia is promising that the RTX 3070 will deliver ‘similar or faster’ performance than the outgoing RTX 2080 Ti, as we recently heard from the GPU maker, yet that isn’t the case with Legion here. While the RTX 2080 Ti is good for 4K ultra with no ray tracing, the RTX 3070 isn’t, and you need a 3080. Nvidia and Ubisoft also provided an additional set of specs for the requirements for ray tracing at 1440p with very high graphics settings (ray tracing on high, DLSS set to quality), and that’s where an RTX 3070 slots in as the recommended card. You’ll need to pair it with at least an Intel Core i7-9700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600. There are couple of further points worth highlighting, one of them being that the base spec (1080p resolution, low details) now calls for a GTX 970 graphics card (or GTX 1650) whereas the old spec allowed for a GTX 960. Sadly, it now seems that owners of the latter GPU are out of luck. The better news is for 1080p with ray tracing on high graphics settings (ray tracing on medium, DLSS set to quality) the required GPU has been notched back from an RTX 2070 to an RTX 2060 (the CPU requirements have been scaled back a bit too). Check out the new PC requirements for Watch Dogs: Legion in full below.
