  9. DNA evidence from a discarded cigarette has led Florida police to arrest a man on suspicion of murdering a woman 35 years ago. Daniel Wells, 57, was arrested and charged in Pensacola earlier this week for the murder of Tonya McKinley. Ms McKinley was found strangled and sexually assaulted on New Year’s Day in 1985, leaving behind a baby son. Her case has gone unsolved, but police say DNA from a public database linked Mr Wells to her murder in Pensacola. "I didn't really know if this [arrest] would ever happen," Ms McKinley’s sister, Renee, told NBC News. "I didn't really think this would happen in my lifetime, not after 35 years." Why a mother fought for her daughter's killer to be freed The 40-year hunt for a killer In a statement, Pensacola police said they interviewed her friends and family. Police also spoke with other people who were celebrating New Year's Eve at a local restaurant where the 23-year-old was last seen. But until this week, no suspect has been named. "Despite having a good bit of physical evidence and dozens of interviews, over time, the trail went cold," police said. "In the meantime, a baby boy grew up without a mother, parents buried their daughter without knowing justice, and a killer was walking around free". How did police trace the suspect? Their success came after comparing open-source genealogy databases with DNA evidence found near McKinley’s body. Detectives in California used the same method to find Joseph James DeAngelo, a suspect in the infamous Golden State Killer cases. The 40-year hunt for a killer The database led Pensacola police to several different people believed to be Mr Wells’ distant cousins. After the discovery, authorities built a family tree to identify suspects, and subsequent investigations led to Mr Wells. Police tailed him and took DNA evidence from a cigarette butt that he threw out of his car. Mr Wells has been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual battery, and is being held at Escambia Country Jail. Timothy Davidson Jr, Ms McKinley’s 35-year-old son, told The Daily Beast that he was happy at the news of the arrest, but would only feel “complete when there is a conviction and justice has been served. “It’s still kind of unbelievable, like I’m dreaming,” he added.

  12. In the US, where everyone has a cause, it’s possible to buy a fairly complete wardrobe bearing the ‘Save the stick’ slogan. Stickers, too, are available to those who want to take up the cause. One wag came up with ‘Anti-theft device: this vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission’. It’s a gently amusing line with, perhaps, an unintentionally serious point. The car industry is phasing out the manual gearbox, often claiming it is helping drivers by removing distraction when actually the truth is that economies of scale and emissions legislation are reducing choice, and sports cars in particular are becoming so powerful that the average driver would probably ruin their car’s clutch or transmission faster than they could dial the number for the maker’s roadside assistance. And actually, setting aside the pleasure that is to be derived from driving a manual, operating one rather than letting an automatic do the work makes for a more attentive driver. All four limbs get involved in the physical act of driving, so there’s less temptation to handle a smartphone, more focus on the act of managing the machine and – assuming it’s a good gearbox – more pleasure to be had from perfecting all those upshifts, downshifts and heel-and-toe moments. Obviously, it’s almost too late to do anything about it. Electric cars spell the end for the stick shift. So if you want to continue to revel in the simple act of changing gear, set aside a car that will continue to offer you the interaction. Here are 10 that will get you engaged. It’s hard to overstate what a transformation the six-speed gearbox made to the Seven when it was introduced in 1993. The close-ratio unit made the lightweight roadster even more invigorating to drive, keeping the sweet-revving Rover K-Series engine singing away at the top of its rev range, with barely any discernible let-up between each gear. It had, and still has, one of the shortest throws of any manual gearbox and remains the highlight of the range after nearly three decades of service. The final version of the 997-generation 911 GT3 RS featured an engine block that was shared with the 911 RSR race car and was able to summon more than 490bhp from its four naturally aspirated litres. Happily, the extra power and wider spread of torque over the regular RS meant the tall gear ratios worked better, while the gearshift remained a delight. But with only 600 of them made, prices have shot up faster than the engine’s rev counter. They’re now around £400,000, compared with less than £130,000 when new.
  13. A number of US states have ordered shutdowns with one in five Americans soon set to be under a "stay at home" order. Connecticut and New Jersey on Friday joined Illinois and California in ordering residents to stay at home in order to combat coronavirus. New York State ordered non-essential businesses to close. The virus has claimed nearly 230 lives in the US and infected more than 18,500 people. Globally more than 275,000 patients have tested positive for the respiratory illness and more than 11,000 have died. A ban on non-essential travel across the US-Canada border came into effect at midnight on Saturday. Speaking at the White House later in the day, President Donald Trump said governors, mayors and citizens were working with "urgency and speed" in what he described as a "war against the virus". Also at the news conference, Vice-President Mike Pence said he and his wife would be tested after one of his aides tested positive for the virus. "Neither the president or I had direct contact" with staffer, Mr Pence said, adding that the staffer was "well". What measures are the US states taking? On Friday Connecticut, Illinois and New York announced measures directing tens of millions of people to stay at home. The restrictions order most workplaces to close and require residents to remain inside except for trips to grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations. In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo restricted public gatherings and ordered all "non-essential workers" to stay at home. The measures come as confirmed coronavirus cases in New York reached 7,000 - the highest of any US state. "These provisions will be enforced," Mr Cuomo told reporters. "These are not helpful hints." Late on Friday, President Trump declared a major disaster in New York State, a move that will release federal funding. What can West learn from Asia's coronavirus fight? Dow erases Trump presidency gains in virus sell-off New York and the neighbouring New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania also issued a joint order on Friday for the closure of all "personal care" businesses, such as hair and nail salons and piercing and tattoo parlours. All outdoor team sports such as basketball games are also banned under the measures, which take effect on Sunday night. On Thursday California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a similar order, telling all residents to stay at home. He estimated more than half of the 40 million people in his state would contract Covid-19 in just the next two months. Images from Los Angeles show some of the city's most famous landmarks completely deserted while the freeways are almost empty. Illinois, whose biggest city is Chicago, has also ordered all residents indoors with exceptions to shop for food and medicine or take exercise. Nevada and Hawaii have also introduced tough new restrictions to reduce social contact. President Trump has so far ruled out any nationwide lockdown. He said on Friday: "I don't think we'll ever find [a US shutdown] necessary". He added that the US was "winning" the war against the virus. Life goes on By Sophie Long, BBC News, Los Angeles These may be the most restrictive measures to be put in place in modern Californian history, but in Los Angeles life goes on and the streets are far from empty. In a city famous for its gridlocked rush-hour traffic, cars are moving more freely past the palm trees on Sunset Boulevard. In Hollywood cyclists still overtake joggers and families still go out for a stroll. But these could all be seen as essential excursions. People have been told that those who work in critical sectors should still go to work. Busses are still running and grocery stores, pharmacies and banks are all still open. But many people are staying at home and friends and neighbours are keeping their distance. Restaurants and bars closed their doors days ago, but now all gatherings outside the home have been banned and there is no indication when the restrictions will be lifted. Why has the US restricted border traffic with Mexico and Canada? On Saturday, the US and Canada suspended all non-essential traffic across their shared border, which hundreds of thousands of people normally cross each day, for at least 30 days. The curbs took effect at midnight, the Canadian government said. President Donald Trump said on Friday: "In normal times, these massive flows [of immigrants] place a vast burden on our healthcare system, but during a global pandemic, they threaten to create a perfect storm that would spread the infection to our border agents, migrants and to the public at large." Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf meanwhile said both sides wanted "to make sure cargo continues, trade continues, healthcare workers continue to be able to traverse that border". Similar restrictions have been put into place on the US's southern border with Mexico. Mexico's Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said that the measures would reduce the risk of the virus spreading further while not affecting economic activity between the two countries. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said US citizens should immediately return home unless they intend to remain abroad for some time. What's the picture in Canada? There have been more than 1,000 cases of Covid-19 in Canada, which has barred travel into the country by most foreign citizens. Twelve people have died. On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said asylum seekers crossing into the country on foot from the US would be turned back as part of the border shutdown. Economic damage from the outbreak is also becoming clear with more than 500,000 applications for unemployment benefits made this week compared to 27,000 in the same week last year. Air Canada has meanwhile announced plans to lay off 5,100 employees. The government has announced a C$82bn ($57bn, £49bn) financial package to boost the economy, more than a quarter of which will be used to directly support workers and businesses. In most provinces across the country, schools have been closed, as have public venues including bars, restaurants and cinemas. Restrictions on mass gatherings are in place. In the province of Ontario, public events of more than 50 people are banned. How have the president's businesses been affected? According to US media, Mr Trump's Mar-a-Lago golf club in Palm Beach, Florida, has closed following an order by the state's governor to shut all bars and restaurants. A spokesperson for the Trump Organization would not confirm the mothballing of the resort, but told CNN: "Various facilities are temporarily closed given local, state and federal mandates. "We anxiously await the day when this pandemic is over and our world-class facilities can reopen." Mr Trump's hotel in Las Vegas has already closed after coronavirus restrictions were introduced by the governor of Nevada. The president's hotels in New York and Washington DC remain open, though more than 200 staff have reportedly been laid off as their occupancy rate plunges amid the pandemic. The bar and restaurant of the Trump International Hotel in the nation's capital have shut in response to a virus-containment directive from the city authorities.

  17. What is it? The GLS 63 heads an increasingly long line-up of go-fast SUVs from Mercedes-AMG. The US-produced model builds on standard versions of the third-generation GLS with the latest iteration of the Mercedes performance car division’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre petrol engine. The sonorous V8 is mated to a 48V mild-hybrid system that enables electric boosting for an extra dose of performance and greater efficiency. Driving through AMG’s nine-speed automatic gearbox and a fully variable 4Matic+ four-wheel drive system, the combustion engine kicks out a nominal 603bhp at 5750rpm. A further 22bhp from the electric motor, which also acts as an alternator to harvest kinetic energy, ultimately gives the GLS 63 a combined 625bhp. That's 48bhp more than the now-discontinued 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine found in the old GL 63. Torque is rated at 626lb ft between 2250rpm and 5000rpm, although it can be boosted to 810lb ft for short periods of full-throttle acceleration thanks to an additional 184lb ft from the electric motor. Official figures point to a 0-62mph time of 4.2sec and a nominal top speed of 155mph. This can be raised to 174mph with the optional Driver’s Package, which also adds upgraded tyres to the mix.
  18. Australia is closing its borders to all foreigners who aren't permanent residents in a bid to slow the spread of coronavirus. About 80% of Australia's more than 700 cases have come from returned travellers, or people who've been in contact with them. The border closure, in effect from 21:00 local time on Friday (10:00 GMT), has upended travel plans, and is likely to split families. It's also created uncertainty for roughly two million temporary visa holders in Australia. So if you're in that situation, what do the latest changes mean? If you want to leave Australia Bear in mind the situation is changing fast and that airlines may continue to cancel flights and routes. Also keep abreast of what restrictions there may be upon return to your home country. For UK citizens, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises to keep across guidance from governments in Australia and at home. If you want to stay Your visa is valid for its full duration as long as you meet its requirements - note this may include maintaining a job. If its nearing expiry and you want to stay on, you need to apply for a new one before it elapses. Australia is allowing people to apply to waive a "no further stay" condition - which would typically prevent visa from being renewed. This condition is common on many backpacker and temporary work visas, for instance. Remember applications are necessary. If your visa has expired and you want to remain, you need to apply for a "bridging visa". This will allow you to stay while you await the results of your new visa application. "Any visa application will be assessed considering the Covid-19 enhanced border measures and an applicant's individual circumstances," an Australian government spokesman said. Students who need to fulfil study requirements also have the option to apply for an exception, which will be granted on a case-by-case basis. What happens if you're outside Australia? You will not be allowed back until the travel restrictions have been lifted - and no-one knows when that may be. This also applies to temporary visa holders currently in Australia who may have planned to leave and come back. If you've already obtained a temporary visa and have not yet entered the country, you will need to re-apply once the restrictions are lifted. Australia bans 'non-essential' large gatherings Australia and NZ ban non-residents from entry You can enter Australia if you're a permanent resident, but the advice is to contact the office which granted your visa when you're able to travel. What happens if you stay? Migration advocates and the Labor opposition have raised concerns that temporary work visa holders who stay in Australia could lose out if their employment is terminated in the event they lose their job. An economic downturn may make it hard for foreign workers to find a replacement job. Many will also not have access to welfare benefits or subsidised medical treatment.
  19. Cafes, pubs and restaurants must close from Friday night - except for take-away food - to tackle coronavirus, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said. All the UK's nightclubs, theatres, cinemas, gyms and leisure centres have also been told to close "as soon as they reasonably can". Mr Johnson said the situation would be reviewed each month. The chancellor has said the government will pay 80% of wages for employees who are not working, up to £2,500 a month. The announcement about closures follows similar measures taken in other countries - including in Ireland, where pubs and bars were asked to close from last Sunday. There have been 167 deaths in England from the coronavirus outbreak, as well as six in Scotland, three in Wales and one in Northern Ireland. Speaking at a daily Downing Street press briefing, Mr Johnson said the measures would be enforced "strictly" and that licensing arrangements would make doing so "relatively simple". He urged people not to go out on Friday night ahead of the closures, stressing: "For now, at least physically, we need to keep people apart." The prime minister added: "The more effectively we follow the advice we are given, the faster this country will stage both a medical and an economic recovery in full." Speaking at the same briefing, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the new measures to help employees out of work were "unprecedented". He appealed to employers to stand by their workers during the coronavirus crisis, in the wake of many firms warning of collapse. England's deputy chief medical officer, Dr Jenny Harries, told reporters at the briefing that the government was not advising people against going outside. "We are saying, if you are going to go outside, go in a way that reduces your social contact," she said. In a separate televised address, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also asked all restaurants, cafes, pubs and cinemas to close. Northern Ireland First Minister Arlene Foster backed Mr Johnson's latest announcement, saying: "This is for the community's protection." The new measures come after Mr Johnson said on Thursday that the UK could "turn the tide" on the coronavirus outbreak within 12 weeks. He reiterated on Friday that the government does not want to "immobilise the Tube or our major transport networks", which he said were "too important for the delivery of crucial public services". The decision to tell pubs, restaurants and other public places to close was welcomed by former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who previously criticised the government's response to the outbreak.
