In the town of Winden children begin to disappear, 15 exposing the fractured relationships, double lives and the dark past of four families who live there, and revealing a mystery that spans four generations. The story begins in 2019, but is extended through time travel to include storylines in 1986 and 1953, as certain characters from the series' main families become aware of the existence of a wormhole in the caves. located below the local nuclear power plant, run by the influential Tiedemann family. During the first season, secrets about the Kahnwald, Nielsen, Doppler, and Tiedemann families begin to be revealed, and their lives begin to unravel as the ties between the missing children and the stories of the city and its citizens become apparent. Attempts by intertwined families to reunite with their missing loved ones continue in the second season, several months after the end of the first season, in 2020, 1987, and 1954, respectively. Additional stories set in 2053 and 1921 bring new aspects to the mysteries, and the secret Sic Mundus community, a major force in an underlying battle for the final fate of the people of Winden, is explored as the season progresses into the apocalypse: the destruction of Winden and the death of many of its inhabitants. The third season follows the events that take place immediately after the apocalypse in Winden, the stories of the past and future, and the introduction of another world, revealing the origin of the loop.
