  1. This motorcycle uses the classic propeller invented at the end of the 17th century and which was achieved, above all, to run locomotives. A motorcyclist with the soul of an inventor, or vice versa, has revolutionized the networks with his steam motorcycle and the video in which he shows it. Amid huge white clouds of smoke, the motorist inched along like a 19th-century train, even with a similar sound. And saving the best for last: the honk is identical to that of old locomotives. These types of motors were invented in the late 17th century and were used for many years to power trains, cars, ships, and other machines. Its operation is simple: water is heated in a boiler until it turns into steam, the steam expands and pushes a piston, creating the movement of the vehicle. When the steam is released from the chamber, the piston returns to its original position. Then more steam enters the chamber and starts the process all over again. The piston is connected to another part of the machine. The back and forth motion of the piston causes a wheel or gear to turn on the other side. 5. The EU funds represent a great opportunity to tackle two endemic problems of a large part of the Spanish business fabric: its difficulties in gaining size and the lack of digitization. They pave the way for companies with fewer than 50 workers to play a leading role in the economic recovery The word is used too widely, but in this case it is inescapable: May 28, 2021 was a historic day. The 27 countries of the European Union agreed to put their wills and reputations together to obtain and invest 800,000 million euros with a clear objective: that coming out of the brutal recession caused by the covid pandemic was an opportunity to modernize the continent, solving its deficiencies and allowing it to maintain its role as a great economic power in a world that changes rapidly and whose focus moves from the Atlantic to the Pacific. But from the dreams of Brussels we must move on to the realities of Irun, Vigo or Arrecife: convert European manna into real jobs, real companies, real social and ecological changes. And that is only possible if it is supported by small and medium-sized companies. It is to discuss this historic opportunity that EL PAÍS, sponsored by Sabadell and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, is organizing a meeting in Madrid this week. Without a base of small businesses, no great economy can develop, as Lorenzo Amor, president of the National Federation of Self-Employed Workers Associations (ATA), explains. “Spain is a country where companies work in a network. Hundreds of SMEs and thousands of freelancers hang from each large company. "SMEs and the self-employed have to play a leading role," says Vice President Nadia Calviño. And that includes incorporating them into large planes powered by European funds. "In the PERTE [Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation], SMEs play a fundamental role," Calviño points out. “Both in those that are already underway, such as the automobile, the agri-food industry, and energy storage and green hydrogen, as well as the upcoming Artificial Intelligence, circular economy, and naval and space industries. Within the PERTE of the electric and connected vehicle, it is required that in the projects presented there be 40% SMEs. In some calls it is a requirement, in others it gives points”. But ensuring the success of small businesses on these big planes takes more than just regulations. Structural reforms are a demand from Brussels. “There is labor, pensions, but as much or more, the reform of the bureaucracy, the promotion of the startup ecosystem, the bankruptcy reform, with the second chance law, are important,” Calviño lists. "It's about creating a regulatory environment that favors the business climate." Another challenge, according to the minister, is “the recapitalization and modernization of the Spanish public administration”. "We must put the 060 at the service of SMEs and entrepreneurs," he says. There are high hopes pinned on the power of the internet. "The economic recovery can only be seen in a digital key," considers Carme Artigas, Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence. “The digital economy is now 22% of GDP. We want it to be 40% by 2025”. But to achieve this goal it is essential to integrate SMEs. "The lack of digitization and the lack of digital training hampers us as a country, hampers our competitiveness." And although on a website companies are more equal to each other than on the street, the pandemic has revealed that, in practice, this is not the case. “Digital commerce grew 50% during the pandemic; that of SMEs did so by 9%”, says Artigas. "Thousands of freelancers participate in a program in which a telecommunications company participates," explains Amor. "There is talk of Wi-Fi in the villages, but who installs it?" The digital kit, a package of aid for the digitization of companies, has the potential to be a tool to make this qualitative leap. "It is an instrument at the service of competitiveness," says Inmaculada Riera, general director of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce. But the internet is a means, not an end, as Amor makes clear: “The digital kit should not be just that. We must take advantage to train, maintain and strengthen the self-employed within that space”. “It is not enough to provide service companies, they must be trained, guided and networked”, confirms Calviño. Voices that ask for realism All this is very nice, but there are voices that ask for more realism. Many Spanish companies are going to be left out because the sectors in which they operate do not fit with the lines along which the European Commission wants to develop economic recovery. The result, in the words of Amor, is that "the funds have not reached the self-employed, a large part of the business fabric." "It is essential that the aid reaches the reality of the SME", considers Luis Aribayos, general secretary of the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises (Cepyme). “Two out of three small companies do not believe that they receive money from European aid. Many SMEs struggle to survive. And funds are a perishable product: if they are not distributed they will rot. We need to change the perception and invest in distribution.” How to get money from the hands of the state to the needs of small businesses is possibly the biggest challenge of all. ”Financial institutions play a key role, first because of co-financing and the solutions we can provide, but also because of the knowledge part: what we know about companies, capillarity and also the ability to screen projects so that they go further” , points out Albert Figueras, deputy general manager and director of Companies, Businesses and the Self-Employed at Banco Sabadell. “We need the collaboration of the financial system”, considers Amor. 6. A new field, called imageomics, uses artificial intelligence to extract biological information about animals directly from photos. You go on vacation to Kenya, take a picture of a zebra and post it on a social network so that your friends can enjoy it and hit the 'like' button. But, beyond your own enjoyment and that of your contacts, these photos can have a benefit that you would never have imagined: helping researchers to track and collect information on endangered species. Scientists are using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze photos of zebras, sharks, and other animals to identify and track individuals. This data offers new insights into their movements as well as po[CENSORED]tion trends. "We have millions of images of threatened and endangered animals taken by scientists, camera traps, drones, and even tourists," explains Tanya Berger-Wolf, director of the Translational Data Analytics Institute at The Ohio State University. "Those images contain a wealth of data that we can mine and analyze to help protect animals and fight extinction." This new field called imageomics is taking the use of wildlife images a step further by using AI to extract biological information about animals directly from their photos. One of the biggest challenges facing environmentalists is the lack of available data on many threatened and endangered species. In fact, of the more than 142,000 species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the status of more than half is unknown due to insufficient data or uncertain po[CENSORED]tion trends. “We are losing biodiversity at an unprecedented rate and we don't even know how much and what we are losing. If we want to save African elephants from extinction, we need to know how many there are in the world, where they are and how fast they are declining," says Berger-Wolf. Scientists do not have enough GPS collars and satellite tags to monitor all the elephants and answer these questions. Therefore, using artificial intelligence techniques opens new effective ways to learn more about animal po[CENSORED]tions. Berger-Wolf and her colleagues created a system called Wildbook that uses computer vision algorithms to analyze photos taken by vacationing tourists and researchers in the field to identify not just animal species, but individuals as well. "Our AI algorithms can identify people wearing anything with stripes, spots, wrinkles or indentations, even the shape of a whale's caudal fin or a dolphin's dorsal fin," explains Berger-Wolf. Wildbook is a kind of social network, mainly dedicated to animal life, containing more than 2 million photos of around 60,000 uniquely identified whales and dolphins around the world. But, in addition to sharks or marine mammals, there are thousands of photographs of land animals such as zebras, turtles, giraffes, African carnivores and other species. "This is now one of the main sources of information scientists have about killer whales: it's not bad data anymore," says Berger-Wolf. Berger-Wolf's team has developed an artificial intelligence agent that searches for relevant species in publicly shared social media posts. "That means many people's vacation photos of sharks they sighted in the Caribbean, for example, ended up being used in Wildbook for science and conservation," explains Berger-Wolf. 7. Electric bicycles and motorcycles are becoming the main protagonists of the urban centers of cities due in large part to their ease of use, their low maintenance cost and their low pollution. Therefore, it is not surprising that more and more companies choose to manufacture this type of vehicle. Today we will talk about the Katalis Company and its Katalis EV.500, an electric motorcycle that mixes in its design the characteristics of a World War II fighter plane and the latest electric mobility technology. Katalis EV.500: 40 km of autonomy and 45 km/h of maximum speed Katalis Company, is an Indonesian design studio based in Fatmawati, (south of Jakarta) that has developed this curious electric motorcycle. And curious tenths because despite the fact that we can find a wide variety of electric motorcycles on the market, we had never come across one based on the exterior of a combat aircraft. Originally, this extravagant electric motorcycle was intended to be unveiled at the Indonesian International Motor Show (IIMS) 2020, however the coronavirus disrupted its planes. Despite this eventuality, the project went ahead presenting itself on its own social networks with a most particular aspect. For its creation, the designers took for their basis an Indonesian electric scooter known as Selis Garuda. Once his base was established, work began with him on the idea of creating a motorcycle that recorded a fighter jet from World War II. To do this, Julián Palpa, the main designer of the Katalis Company, changed the entire frame of the Garuda to make his own with different modifications. One of them was to use hardened 6061 aluminum, with which it was possible to lighten the maximum weight to 21 kg and avoid corrosion problems in the future. For its exterior finish, different plates of this aluminum topped with rivets were used, simulating the plates used by combat aircraft in their fuselage. Different aerospace elements were also added, such as a starter switch with a cover or an anti-short rotary key. Another detail that stands out on its exterior is the use of plates to cover the spokes of its wheels. A reason that helps aesthetics but also the autonomy of the motorcycle since this way energy losses are avoided. As for the engine, it uses the same mechanical base as the Selis Garuda. A 500 W electric drive with which a maximum speed of 45 km/h is achieved. To power this motor, it uses a 12 Ah battery with which it achieves a range of up to 40 kilometers on a single charge. To recharge it, you can use any domestic outlet, being ready in just 3 hours. Despite its good work, this bike will not go on sale to the public. However, it has served as inspiration for the creation of future models. This has been stated by Joseph Sinaga, Head of Strategy, "It is a micro mobility solution that encompasses the changes that are taking place in society and in the way of moving". Thus, we can find the new Katalis EV-1K/56 in the company's catalogue. A very similar motorcycle that is painted with the colors of a manga series as mythical as Akira. 8. Today it is impossible to understand the Spanish economy without contextualizing it in the European Union (EU) and, more specifically, in the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Spain has always had a proactive role in the construction of the monetary union, being one of its founding members. Maintaining this role depends on being perceived as a credible and sustainable partner that pursues the common good above individual interests. This requires a defined, concrete country model, which is in this predictable register, with an adequate economic fiscal policy and structural reforms aligned with the requirements of belonging to the EU. A country that respects common rules and makes the necessary efforts to improve the competitiveness and resilience of its economy can count on sufficient authority to propose the necessary reforms or essential risk-sharing mechanisms. It is in this context where, at the time of the legislature in which we find ourselves, it would be convenient to stop, look back, see what we have done and, above all, think about what we are going to do. The first exercise, looking back, does not project a clear, defined, concrete, predictable economic model. On January 28, the INE published the advance of the Quarterly National Accounts of Spain for the fourth quarter of 2021. In year-on-year terms, the GDP experienced a growth of 5.2% in 2021. Is this a good fact? As always, it is good to know where you come from and who you are being compared to. For example, compared to the previous quarter, the GDP only grew by 2.0%, which represents a slowdown compared to the previous quarter. Throughout the year 2021, different organizations and studies have been updating their forecasts regarding the Spanish recovery to date, and all of them with certain downward adjustments as the months of the year progress, except from official positions. Therefore, knowing the consensus on the part of the main national and international economic studies services, the advanced data presented to us by the INE was consistent with the economic updates of the economic consensus, and with the lower growth of the fourth quarter, thus confirming a some slowdown in the pace of the Spanish economy. Along with the absence of a definitive model of economic growth, they may cite other factors that could add to this data, and among them would be the advance of the omicron variant, inflation and cuts in supply chains as other determining causes of the general slowdown of the economy in 2021 and, above all, in the future. Lastly, we also find a weight factor in relation to the actual pace of execution of the Next Generation EU funds. Throughout the month of January, we learned from the Governor of the Bank of Spain that the estimated impact of these funds on the Spanish economy has been fading compared to the expectations generated. While in March 2021 a contribution to GDP of close to 1% was estimated for the same year, as of December this figure fell to 0.3%. Recently, specifically on Thursday, February 10, the European Commission, in a logical sequence, corroborated what was mentioned above, and forecast a growth of the Spanish economy for 2022 of 5.6%, far from the 7% that has been officially announced. It is in this scenario of an "Economy in Europe" where we would be the only economy, one of the important ones in Europe, which has not yet recovered pre-pandemic levels, and which according to these latest forecasts would be announced by the end of 2022. An increase in the activity rate and an improvement in productivity is essential In the second part of the analysis that I posed to you, that of the prospective aspect, the question that we should be asking ourselves and demanding answers is: what country do we envision in a few years? How can Spain achieve real convergence in per capita income with the eurozone ? For this, it is necessary, in addition to defining ourselves in a clear model, that we value the economy of intangibles, the basis of the future, to set the conditions that guarantee a certain balance between financial capital, natural capital and social capital. It would be necessary to insist on actions that, within this new paradigm, contribute, without charging the public treasury or the taxpayer, to the reduction of the unemployment rate, the increase in the activity rate and the improvement of productivity. It is in this European reality that continuous and lasting alliances must be sought, promoting a European axis that seeks greater cohesion and strength of the EU. There Spain must decide what role it wants and wishes to play. We understand that your action is very important, but we also believe that without clear facts and actions there is no real option to influence, lead and, as a consequence, prosper. 9. The text establishes different levels of sanction in case of infractions. A slight could be more than 30 thousand dollars. This Friday the Spanish Government will have the preliminary draft of the animal protection law, which contemplates prohibiting the slaughter and mistreatment of animals and their sale and exhibition in stores and which will require new pet owners to undergo training in responsible ownership, among other measures. In an extraordinary session held this Friday, the Council of Ministers has given the green light to the text that will go to the Congress of Deputies to start processing it as a future animal protection law. This is the first law in the history of Spain that regulates the protection of animals, as explained by the Minister of Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda, Ione Belarra, who at a press conference after the Council of Ministers highlighted "mistreatment, abandonment and sacrifice” as the “three scourges” that violate the rights of these living beings and on which the future regulation focuses. Some of the measures that animal groups have highlighted in the text include training that, once the law comes into force, will be mandatory for anyone who wants to live with an animal, as well as the end of the marketing and exhibition of animals in stores of pets, and the limitation of breeding, which can only be carried out by authorized professional breeders. The sacrifice of animals is also prohibited, except for euthanasia "justified under veterinary criteria and control with the sole purpose of avoiding their suffering", as well as abandonment, mistreatment - defined as "any action by which pain or suffering is inflicted on an animal" - and its use in fights and in artistic, tourist, advertising or begging activities. In her speech, Belarra emphasized that this law puts an end to the mistreatment that has come to be exhibited on social networks, and has alluded to specific cases, such as a video that months ago showed a man drowning a small wild boar or the images of a fox burned alive. Despite the "growing sensitivity towards animals", the minister lamented that in Spain "the mistreatment of animals has enjoyed practically total impunity". With the future animal protection law, the participation of animals in nativity scenes, parades and processions will also be prohibited and will be regulated in other cultural events, such as pilgrimages and fairs. The text sets different levels of sanction in case of infractions: for the levels, the fine may be between 600 and 30,000 euros (more than 34 thousand dollars); for the tombs, between 30,001 and 100,000 euros (more than $113,000); and, for the very serious, between 100,001 and 600,000 euros (more than $680,000). In the case of dogs, all were considered "companion", although "working" dogs - for example, guide, police, hunting or shepherd dogs - will have additional provisions that will regulate their activity independently. Regarding the feline colonies, it recognizes the existence and responsibility of caring for community cats, whose "ethical" management -health care or po[CENSORED]tion control plans- is under the jurisdiction of the municipalities, although the Autonomous Communities must generate the framework protocols. This law will eliminate the bullfighting shows provided for in articles 2 and 10 of Law 10/1991, of April 4. In parallel to the norm that today receives the green light, Belarra has announced a reform of the Penal Code promoted by the General Directorate of Animal Protection to withstand the penalties for mistreatment of 24 months in prison resulting in death and 18 months if it involves veterinary care. 10. The Austrian firm announced the arrival of the RC 200 2022, a model that has a launch price of $3,680,000. The motorcycle market does not stop its growth. To the rise in sales that we appreciate month after month, the arrival of new models that increase the local offer is added. Now the turn is that of a member for the sportiest segment of the two wheels. It is the KTM RC 200 2022, a model that collects all the knowledge of the Austrian firm in MotoGP and gives life to a motorcycle that promises a leap in sportsmanship. It arrived in Chile with a list price of $3,900,000, but as a promotional value for the launch, the cost dropped to $3,680,000, as reported at the launch of the motorcycle that took place at the KTM premises in La Serena, with the objective of decentralizing the brand's activities and reinforcing the option of motorcycle use also in regions. After several successful seasons in the highest competition, the transfer of data from the huge KTM RC16 allows the evolution of the RC 200, collecting the essence of track motorcycling to consolidate itself as a model with a sporty character due to the inclined driving position. , ergonomics, engine response and renewed image with design inspired by Grand Prix. The aerodynamics have been optimized using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, configuring an aerodynamic dome that provides maximum protection against the wind, incorporating a new halogen headlight with LED daytime running lights (DRL) and integrated turn signals for optimal visibility. In technology, it has a totally new LCD instrument screen to deliver the most relevant information during driving: speed, engine revolutions, gear engaged indicator, autonomy, time and function of the ABS braking system. Another detail in the redesign is that it now incorporates a larger fuel tank, 13.7 liters, based on the tank of the KTM Moto3 competition. According to the brand, it provides the largest range of autonomy in its class, which is combined with low consumption. Regarding the mechanical configuration, the chassis derives directly from the world of racing and weighs 1.5 kilos less than the previous generation. In addition, it features a new wheel design that represents a drop in unsprung load of 3.4 kilos compared to the featured model, while the new ByBre brake system saves another 960 grams. KTM also took special care to improve the overall ergonomics, so the knee area is now developed to allow for easier and more fluid movements of the rider, being as narrow as possible in more contact areas. At the motor level, the new KTM RC 200 is equipped with the proven 200 cc liquid-cooled 4-cylinder single-cylinder engine, which achieves maximum efficiency with the six-speed gearbox. This block delivers 25.4 Hp at 8,000 rpm and a torque of 19.5 Nm at 6,000 rpm. The KTM RC 200's suspension features a 43mm big-piston-type WP Apex fork up front and a new WP Apex shock at the rear, with track-proven settings for a more responsive ride. These suspensions share the technology of the KTM competition bikes, inheriting the response and behavior throughout the acceleration range and during cornering. The braking system, for its part, progressively controls the bike, thanks to a ByBre radially mounted four-piston fixed brake caliper, which combines a 320 mm brake disc at the front and a single-piston fixed caliper with a 230mm brake on the rear wheel. By having reduced 960 grams of weight in the ABS braking system, the KTM RC 200 provides the best possible deceleration and under conditions of maximum stability For Jan Spaarwater, KTM Chile brand manager, “KTM's development and evolution process since it entered MotoGP in 2017, had to download valuable information to the street ranges, which would not have been possible to obtain in any other way. This technology is applied in the manufacture of the new RC 200, making it a unique motorcycle in the low displacement sport segment and an example of the advantages of belonging to the elite of motorcycling competition”. 11. Quito, February 17, 2022 “It is satisfactorily evidencing the decrease in COVID-19 infections on a national scale. Vaccination presents excellent results, however, we will continue to comply with biosecurity measures to welcome our Peruvian brothers and sisters with open arms and reactivate ourselves economically,” said Isabel Cueva Ortega, zonal coordinator 7 – Health. Ecuador and Peru have agreed to reopen the southern border from this Friday, February 18, 2022, at 09:00, in the cities of Huaquillas (El Oro province) and Macará (Loja province). The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) will take the necessary measures so that the border reactivation develops normally. As of that date, any person who enters Ecuador by land must comply with the established guidelines: Every person over 3 years of age must present a RT-PCR test (molecular biology) or a valid vaccination card/certificate with at least 14 days before entering the country with a complete schedule. Any person who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and who continues to obtain a positive result in the RT-PCR test after one month may present a medical certificate issued in the country of origin that guarantees their health status if they are not in the of contagion. Those who present symptoms will receive attention from the MSP. Children under 3 years of age and crew members do not present RT-PCR proof or vaccination card. The traveler who presents symptoms will be considered a suspected case. Presentation of the Traveler's Health Declaration digitally at the point of entry into the country. This applies to any person who enters for more than one day or an Ecuadorian resident who has been outside the country for more than 72 hours. The opening of the border will be progressive with permanent surveillance at the entry points. The border crossing will be open from Monday to Sunday from 08:00 to 17:00. This will allow to reactivate the economy and tourism in Ecuador. If there is a "suspicious case", a rapid impression test (nasopharyngeal swab) will be carried out and, if positive, the citizen must go into isolation for 10 days after the sample is taken. 12. They are able to distinguish simple numerical concepts and in the most evolved cases even interpret the notion of zero The mathematical abilities of primates seem to be located in the parietal zone of the neocortex, the most recent layer of the brain in our evolutionary history (EFE) Many animals express the notion of understanding the differences of quantities, in the mathematical sense, and even more so the concept of zero, the absolute lack of something. Primates undoubtedly top the list of animals that have this quality, but they are not alone on this list. Another of the animals that stand out in this regard are the crows, one of the most intelligent and daring birds that exist and that have a certain mathematical capacity. Corvids are not only capable of distinguishing between different quantities and understanding suitable ones are greater than others, but they can also understand complex concepts such as addition. A recent research work confirmed that in crows there were certain neurons associated with the different positive values of simple numbers such as one, two or three, and that there was also a specific signal for the empty set: zero. Crows can recognize number concepts and the value of zero (Getty) Primates, including chimpanzees, are also capable of distinguishing the concept of zero. This ability appears to be located in the parietal zone of the neocortex, the most recent layer of the brain in our evolutionary history. What is striking is that birds do not have this of the cerebral cortex, which indicates that this ability to recognize zero has arisen independently in different animal groups, although obtaining a similar result. We call this phenomenon evolutionary convergence. This characteristic has indeed arisen multiple times in the history of life, in very different animals, not only in birds and mammals. According to scientific studies, octopuses can distinguish the idea of zero Bees and some species of ants also have the ability to understand the concept of zero. Outside of insects, cuttlefish and octopuses also seem to recognize the value of zero. These fascinating animals are highly intelligent and have even shown the ability to foresee and plan for the future. It would not be strange that, over time, these types of capacities are investigated in more animals and surprising new cases emerge. 13. This vintage SMEG Futro design offers the ultimate luxury transport for a sunny day in the countryside. With spring just around the corner, it's time to think about getaways to the countryside, hiking trails, bike rides and outdoor picnics. When traveling by motorcycle, luggage cannot be very large and carrying a basket with everything you need to enjoy a meal with friends or family can be cumbersome, so, most of the time, you choose to take the car or choose a nearby destination to which you can go by public transport or even on foot. These inconveniences could go down in history thanks to the SMEG Futro, an electric scooter concept that comes standard with everything you need to go on a picnic to magical places away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Only its aesthetics you already promise. This prototype, the work of artist Joon S. of the Yanko Design studio, takes its inspiration from Vespas, with their flowing, rounded lines from the golden age of Italian automotive design, and SMEG's retro-style home appliances with a range of elegant pastel color scheme, chrome accents and leather trim. It comes with a ring light at the front with two indicators below it and the SMEG branding in the middle. In addition, it has a dashboard with a touch screen that allows access to all its features and includes a browser and music player. What is not detailed is its technical characteristics: speed, autonomy, charging time... However, the most surprising thing about this prototype is hidden in its side panels. Under them comes a complete picnic kit that includes thermoses for coffee, cups, lunch boxes, boards to cut sausages, cutlery and two star products that will make this moment an unforgettable experience: a wine cooler and a mini toaster. Thus, SMEG Futro would position itself as the definitive two-wheeled recreational vehicle. The best thing is that to use these devices, its creator has thought of everything and has placed a removable battery under the seat to be able to plug in these and other devices. For now there is no news about its production, but given the good reception it has had among motor and design lovers, it is likely that it will obtain the necessary financing to go on the market. Due to the characteristics revealed, its price would not be cheap at all, but, surely, it would be worth paying for it. 14. The dynamism of last year was compared to a historical contraction of 7% in 2020 caused by the crisis derived from the coronavirus pandemic, reported by the National Department of Statistics (DANE). Colombia's economy expanded by a historic 10.6% in 2021, the government revealed on Tuesday, a higher-than-expected figure driven by domestic consumption that would pressure the Central Bank to intensify the magnitude of interest rate hikes to contain inflationary pressures. The dynamism of last year was compared to a historical contraction of 7% in 2020 caused by the crisis derived from the coronavirus pandemic, reported by the National Department of Statistics (DANE). The market expected an expansion of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 10% in 2021, according to the median of a Reuters poll, while the Central Bank projected 9.9 percent. "This is a solid end to the year," said Andrés Abadía, chief economist for Latin America at Pantheon Macroeconomics in London. Abadía agreed with other analysts that the surprising economic growth ─which only in December reached 11.8%─ would play in favor of the monetary authority speeding up the pace of interest rate increases. "It seems that households are spending more, so it is better to normalize the interest rate faster to send the signal that prices can be adjusted as the inflation target needs it," said Sergio Olarte, chief economist for Colombia at Scotiabank. . Until January, inflation accumulated 6.94% in years, more than double the long-term punctual goal of the Central Bank, of 3 percent. "I think that in March they can go up quite a bit, 100 basis points is the scenario for continuity in rate hikes, but with higher inflation and higher GDP, an increase of 125 or 150 basis points would not be unusual for me" Olarte assured. The high prices led the issuing bank to step on the accelerator at its January meeting with a surprise increase of 100 basis points in its reference rate to 4% and the market expects the agency to take it to a level close to 6% before end this year. The next meeting of the Central Bank will be at the end of March. widespread growth Although part of the expansion in 2021 was explained by a statistical effect when compared to the contraction of 2020, in the year artistic activities grew by 33%, commerce by 21.2%, the manufacturing industry by 16, 4%, the information and communications category 11.2% and professional and scientific activities 9.7 percent. Other increases occurred in the agricultural sector with 2.4%, in mining with 0.4%, in public services with 5.1%, in construction with 5.7%, in financial activities with 3.4%, in real estate with 2.6% and in public administration with 6.9%, DANE revealed. Investment grew by 9.9% during 2021, compared to a 20.5% drop in 2020. The GDP in 2021 was equivalent to 1,176 billion Colombian pesos (298,731 million dollars), the DANE report specified. In the fourth quarter of last year alone, the fourth largest economy in Latin America expanded by 10.8% compared to the same period in 2020. If compared to the third quarter of the same year, the GDP grew by 4.3% between October and December, DANE specified. According to the median of the Reuters poll, GDP growth is expected to slow to 4.1% this year - below the government's 5% target - due to high inflation, higher interest rates, less fiscal stimulus and uncertainty. for the elections to choose the successor of the president of Colombia, Iván Duque. For 2023, the survey showed a median economic expansion of 3.3 percent. Link: https://www.eleconomista.com.mx/economia/Economia-de-Colombia-crecio-10.6-mas-de-lo-esperado-en-2021--20220215-0070.html
