  12. Microsoft already uses Start menu ads in Windows 10 to get more people to install and use their apps, and it looks like the company is not only keeping it up but looking at other ways to annoy users. According a report by Myce, Microsoft has started to advertise its Personal Shopping Assistant (PSA) extension for Chrome to Windows 10 users with a small notification above the browser’s taskbar icon. The extension is billed as a "smart shopping cart across the web" that can automatically organize visited product pages, mark them as favorites, and let you know of price changes among other things. The add-on itself has been around for about a year and is also available for Edge, Opera, and Firefox. The ads have begun appearing to those testing the still-in-beta Creators Update for Windows. In a short statement due to the initial backlash, A Microsoft spokesperson wrote: "We are always testing new features and information that can help people enhance their Windows 10 experience.” That isn’t stopping users from taking to Google's Chrome Web Store to complain about Microsoft's spammy ways and leave one star reviews for the extension in question. Previously, Microsoft has used the Windows 10 task bar to convince Chrome users to switch to its own browser, with a small notification next to the battery percentage icon telling them that “Chrome is draining your battery faster. Switch to Microsoft Edge for up to 36% more browsing time.” They also ran a campaign in 2016 that placed full screen Tomb Raider adds on users’ lock screens. Users could opt out by unchecking the box marked 'Get fun facts, tips, tricks and more on your lock screen' in their Windows 10 settings. Some are already speculating that Microsoft might be experimenting with the idea of offering a version of Windows for free, and a paid version that blocks advertising.

  13. AOC has announced the Agon AG352UCG, a high-end 35-inch ultrawide monitor that brings a range of features gamers are set to enjoy. This is the third 35-inch curved monitor released by AOC in the past year, however it's the first with a resolution of 3440 x 1440 and support for Nvidia's G-Sync technology. The combination of 3440 x 1440, G-Sync and a 100 Hz refresh rate makes the AG352UCG a direct competitor to Acer's Predator X34. While the X34 includes an IPS display, AOC has gone with an AU Optronics VA panel, although both displays still support 100% sRGB coverage. AOC's display is also more aggressively curved, at 2000R rather than 3800R. The AG352UCG sports a maximum brightness level of 300 nits, plus a rated contrast ratio of 2500:1, a 4ms response time, and 178-degree viewing angles in both directions. The stand includes height, tilt and swivel adjustments, and the rear of the display features LED lighting that can be customized to one of three colors (red, blue, or green). There's a handy array of ports on this monitor, including DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI, a four port USB 3.0 hub, and pair of 3.5mm headphone jacks. AOC even includes a fold-out stand for your headphones, and there's a handle on the stand in case you want to transport this beastly monitor to a LAN party. Oh, and you get a pair of 2W speakers integrated into the body. You'll be able to purchase the Agon AG352UCG in March for £799. There's no word on US pricing at this stage, however £799 comes out to around $820 after UK tax is removed from the equation. This is a pretty good price for the included specifications, considering Acer's Predator X34 costs £1,000 or $1,250.
  14. Israel has approved hundreds of new settlement homes in occupied East Jerusalem, after the staunch pro-Israel US President Donald Trump took office. Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Meir Turgeman told AFP: "Now we can finally build." Israel's PM reportedly delayed approval given the opposition of Barack Obama, who infuriated Israel by allowing a UN resolution against settlements to pass. Settlements in East Jerusalem are considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this. At the start of his cabinet meeting on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would speak to Mr Trump later on Sunday evening. ADVERTISEMENT "There are many issues between us, including the Israeli-Palestinian issue, the situation in Syria and the Iranian threat," he said. What has Israel approved and why the delay? Jerusalem's City Hall approved construction permits for 566 new homes in the East Jerusalem settlements of Pisgat Zeev, Ramat Shlomo and Ramot. Mr Turgeman said: "I was told to wait until Trump takes office because he has no problem with building in Jerusalem. "The rules of the game have changed with Donald Trump's arrival as president. We no longer have our hands tied as in the time of Barack Obama." He said the delay was at the request of Mr Netanyahu in the wake of the 23 December UN Security Council resolution opposing Israeli settlement construction. The US refusal to veto the resolution marked the lowest ebb of deteriorating relations between the Obama administration and the Israeli government. Mr Obama regarded opposing new settlement homes as a key plank in pursuing a possible "two-state solution" to ending the decades-old conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. What are settlements and why is the approval controversial? Settlements are communities established by Israel on land occupied in the 1967 Middle East war. This includes the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. More than 500,000 Jews live in about 140 settlements built since the occupation. Why the settlement issue matters Media captionBarbara Plett Usher explains what the UN Security Council's vote means The issue has long been a major source of dispute between Israel and most of the international community, including the US. The latest UN Security Council resolution statedthat the establishment of settlements "has no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation under international law and a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-state solution and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace". The resolution infuriated the Israeli government, particularly concerning East Jerusalem. Israel sees the whole of Jerusalem as its capital. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. Negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians broke down in 2014. A summit aimed at kick-starting peace talks was held in Paris last Sunday but neither side was invited to participate. It restated the desire for a two-state solution. So why approve now? In two words, Donald Trump. His presidential election campaign carried a message of strong Israeli support. Media captionWhy aren't the Israelis and Palestinians talking? He said he was "Israel's best friend" and that he would move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. After the UN resolution, Mr Trump tweeted in support of Israel, saying he would not allow it to be treated with "disdain and disrespect". He urged Israel to "stay strong" until he assumed office the following month. He has also appointed right-winger David Friedman as his ambassador to Israel. Mr Friedman is strongly critical of the two-state solution and supports Jewish settlement building. What have the Palestinians said? The initial response came from Nabil Abu Rdainah, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. "We strongly condemn the Israeli decision to approve the construction," he said. So what happens next? Israeli right-wing politicians may see a chance to push forward with much wider settlement programmes. Image copyrightAFP Image captionMaale Adumim could be a major flashpoint in the future Two key areas would be the Maale Adumim settlement, east of Jerusalem. It has been seen as a key part in any two-state solution, and an annexation would cast huge doubts on achieving that. The E1 district, between Maale Adumim and East Jerusalem, is another key area. What is the two-state solution? A "two-state solution" to the decades-old conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is the declared goal of their leaders and many international diplomats and politicians. It is the shorthand for a final settlement that would see the creation of an independent state of Palestine within pre-1967 ceasefire lines in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, living peacefully alongside Israel. The United Nations, the Arab League, the European Union, Russia and the United States routinely restate their commitment to the concept.

  18. An alleged backdoor in WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption protocol is said to have the power to allow Facebook or government agencies to listen in on unsuspecting users. WhatsApp has claimed that no one, not even Facebook staff, can access the messages of WhatsApp's more than one billion users. The alleged backdoor was discovered by University of California, Berkeley security researcher Tobias Boelter. He described it in detail to The Guardian, explaining it allows WhatsApp to intercept messages by forcing a new security key to be generated. For messages that have not been marked as delivered, WhatsApp can have messages be re-encrypted and re-sent using a new key that they know and provide. If the recipient is offline, they are not made aware of this change in encryption and the sender is only notified if they opt-in to encryption warnings. WhatsApp uses the Signal Protocol just like Open Whisper Systems' Signal Private Messenger. However, this underlying weakness not inherent to the Signal protocol. If the key is changed in Signal, the messages will just fail to be delivered. WhatsApp instead automatically tries to resend the message with a new key without warning. Boelter said he reported this issue to Facebook back in April of 2016 but was told it was "expected behavior" and wasn't being worked on. The vulnerability has been called a "gold mine for security agencies", a "huge betrayal of trust", and a "threat to freedom of speech" by other security experts. Others are framing it as a decision between user experience and security -- where WhatsApp chose the former due to its massive user base. For those that are looking for secure communication above all, the best alternative is to use a dedicated app like Signal, as recommended by NSA whistle blower Edward Snowden.
  19. Back in December, Apple’s new line of laptops became the first MacBooks to miss out on a “Recommended” rating from Consumer Reports. Almost one month later, the publication has now reversed its decision after working with Apple to address the inconsistent battery issue. While Consumer Reports praised the machines’ displays and performance, it stated that recommending them was impossible due to the erratic results of the battery tests. Apple said the MacBooks should average around 10 hours normal usage, but the non-profit found their life varied from just 3.5 hours up to 19.5 hours. Apple argued that an unknown factor must be the cause of the findings, and 9to5Mac also questioned the validity of the results. But Consumer Reports said it was standing by its decision and wouldn’t be running the tests again. “In this case, we don’t believe re-running the tests are warranted for several reasons. First, as we point out in our original article, experiencing very high battery life on MacBooks is not unusual for us – in fact we had a model in our comparative tests that got 19 hours,” said Maria Rerecich, Consumer Reports’ director of electronic testing. But the organization went back on its statement after Apple discovered it had been using a hidden Safari setting for developing websites that turns off the browser cache. This in turn triggered “an obscure and intermittent bug” that caused icons to reload and led to inconsistent battery life results. The iPhone maker says it has fixed the problem in the recently released macOS Sierra 10.12.3 beta. Consumer Reports agreed to retest the laptops. On average, it found that the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar gave 15.75 hours of battery life, the 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar gave 18.75 hours, and the 15-inch MacBook Pro came in at 17.25 hours. As such, the site has now awarded them its Recommended rating.
