  2. An earthquake on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi has killed at least seven people and injured hundreds. More than a dozen patients and staff are reported to be trapped in the rubble of a hospital that was damaged in the quake. The 6.2-magnitude quake on Friday morning came just hours after an earlier, smaller quake. Indonesia has a history of devastating earthquakes and tsunamis with more than 2,000 killed in a 2018 Sulawesi quake. The epicentre of Friday's earthquake was six kilometres (3.73 miles) northeast of Majene city at a depth of 10 kilometres. Tremors were felt at around 01:00 local time on Friday (17:00 Thursday GMT) for about seven seconds. No tsunami warning was issued. Thousands are reported to have left their homes, fleeing to safety. Authorities have warned that strong aftershocks could follow the two main quakes and that they could still trigger a tsunami. Local reports say among the badly damaged buildings include homes, two hotels, the governor's office and a mall. Authorities said four people died in Majene and more than 600 were injured, while another three people died in neighbouring Mamuju. Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it lies on the so-called Ring of Fire - a line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions on the Pacific rim. In 2004, a tsunami triggered by an earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra killed 226,000 people across the Indian Ocean, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia. The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 killed 170,000 people on the Indonesian island of Sumatra after a quake of magnitude 9.1.

  7. This EV will be able to serve as a 3.5-kilowatt generator and looks remarkably close to the sharp 45 concept car. Hyundai has shared a few images of the 2022 Ioniq 5 EV ahead of its official reveal next month. This is the first model in the Ioniq EV subbrand and is a mid-size hatchback. The Ioniq 5 will be able to serve as a generator providing 3.5 kilowatts of power. Hyundai's new Ioniq subbrand will launch its first electric vehicle soon, and we now have an idea of what it will look like. These teaser images of the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 confirm that it will closely mirror the attractive Hyundai 45 concept car from 2019, and the company has also shared a few more details about the Ioniq 5's design and its ability to serve as a generator. Although Hyundai calls the Ioniq 5 a mid-size crossover, we think its proportions are more hatchback-like. Earlier leaked specs confirmed that it is the same height as the Kona crossover but a foot longer, meaning it should look long and low. Other mechanical details include a combined output of 313 horsepower, standard all-wheel drive, and a choice of two battery packs: a standard 58.0-kWh pack with an estimated 282 miles of range on the WLTP cycle and a possible optional 73.0-kWh pack with even more range. Hyundai also confirmed that the Ioniq 5 will have the capability to serve as a generator. It will provide up to 3.5 kilowatts of juice through 110-volt and 220-volt outlets to power various appliances (the company used an oven, a sound system, and a treadmill as examples). More information is coming in February, as Hyundai is planning a reveal event for the Ioniq 5. It will be the first Ioniq model to arrive in the U.S., possibly by the end of the year, with other Ioniq-branded electric vehicles still to come.
  8. A coronavirus vaccine developed by China's Sinovac has been found to be 50.4% effective in Brazilian clinical trials, according to the latest results released by researchers. It shows the vaccine is significantly less effective than previous data suggested - barely over the 50% needed for regulatory approval. The Chinese vaccine is one of two that the Brazilian government has lined up. Brazil has been one of the countries worst affected by Covid-19. Sinovac, a Beijing-based biopharmaceutical company, is behind CoronaVac, an inactivated vaccine. It works by using killed viral particles to expose the body's immune system to the virus without risking a serious disease response. Several countries, including Indonesia, Turkey and Singapore, have placed orders for the vaccine. Last week researchers at the Butantan Institute, which has been conducting the trials in Brazil, announced that the vaccine had a 78% efficacy against "mild-to-severe" Covid-19 cases. But on Tuesday they revealed that calculations for this figure did not include data from a group of "very mild infections" among those who received the vaccine that did not require clinical assistance. With the inclusion of this data, the efficacy rate is now 50.4%, said researchers. But Butantan stressed that the vaccine is 78% effective in preventing mild cases that needed treatment and 100% effective in staving off moderate to serious cases. The Sinovac trials have yielded different results across different countries. Last month Turkish researchers said the Sinovac vaccine was 91.25% effective, while Indonesia, which rolled out its mass vaccination programme on Wednesday, said it was 65.3% effective. Both were interim results from late-stage trials. There has been concern and criticism that Chinese vaccine trials are not subject to the same scrutiny and levels of transparency as its Western counterparts. Both the Sinovac vaccine and the vaccine developed by Oxford University and pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca have requests for emergency use authorisation pending with regulators in Brazil. The latest news comes as Brazil is dealing with a major spike in cases. The country currently has the third highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world at over 8.1 million, just behind the US and India. The Service's Americas editor Candace Piette says the country is suffering one of the world's deadliest outbreaks but as yet, has not announced when its vaccination programme will begin. The delay has been caused in large part by the government's haphazard and divided approach to vaccination, says our correspondent.

  10. Game Informations. Developers : Arkuda Inc., ELECTROSTALIN ENTERTAINMENT. Publishers : Games Operators, PlayWay S.A.. Released : Jul 16, 2020. Genre : Adventure, 3D, Third-Person. Mode : Single-player. Platforms : Microsoft Windows - Nintendo Switch. A proclivity for thoughtful, character-centric exploration makes the walking simulator the perfect avenue for personal, purposeful storytelling. The sights, sounds, and understated gameplay complement the narrative beats every step of the way. And in the years following its meteoric rise, I’ve gotten to walk a mile in just about everyone’s shoes. Needless to say, my figurative feet are quite sore. Paws and Soul is a coming-of-age story with an unlikely, unreliable narrator: a mystical wolf chasing after the spirits of two children. His three-hour pursuit takes him all over an unfamiliar forest, with puzzles and collectibles galore. But for all its flair and pomposity, Paws and Souls never manages to find its footing. From its opening moments to its final seconds, it fails to establish any semblance of harmony between its gameplay and story. Running simulator The wolf wakes up in a forest he doesn’t know, in a body he doesn’t remember. You, as the wolf, explore this new landscape, stumbling into visions of the past interspersed throughout. Some snapshots star a boy at various stages in his life — others, a girl. How any of these memories can possibly relate back to a wolf is beyond you, and so you set out on a journey for answers. A somber stroll through the woods is not in the wolf’s agenda. Paws and Soul is not so much a “walking simulator” as it is a full-blown marathon. But, as you quickly learn, the forest is larger than the wolf is fast. Luckily, the game is not so sadistic as to not provide you with an auto-run feature. Scattered about are special butterflies, which you can also consume for one of several much-needed buffs. Temporary boons to speed or jump height serve to break up the monotony of lonely wandering, if only by a smidgen. Dotting every path are breadcrumb trails of orange spheres, guiding you to your next destination. Often, they’re used far too sparingly — I lost my way numerous times, especially early on. The uniform environments provide little guidance, even working against the orange spheres on occasion. With few striking landmarks to direct my attention, I had only the soft glow of spheres to light the way. Serviceable, until the flood of luminescent flora and environmental accents washes them out. Seeing the forest for the trees As you head deeper into the forest, the levels grow more linear. The environments concede their spotlight to the visions, through which the primary story is told. Each vision rewards you by crushing your momentum, forcing you to stop and stare while the spirits act out a scene. I opted to press onward while the dialogue continued to play, but complications with overlapping dialogue put a stop to my plans. Standing center stage is David, who struggles with juggling parental expectations and personal goals. It’s a relatable, modern-day dilemma — you can’t help but to root for the kid. But as a wolf, chasing these fleeting moments in time, it becomes difficult to sympathize. Despite the ever-evolving situation with David and his family, the pacing remains unaffected. You run through various sections of the wild, different seasons, all attempting to set some tone that poorly reflects the happenings of the story. This jarring dissonance is most apparent in the gameplay itself, which sees virtually no evolution. Paws and Soul continues to promote a lax experience without building any bridges between the worlds. What are a few beautiful vistas and soothing piano tracks if the forest itself is devoid of meaning? Barking up the wrong tree The wolf is also introduced to Michelle, a young girl with her own coming-of-age story ahead of her. Unlike David, whose story is made to take precedence, her future is in your hands. By solving simple puzzles littered throughout the game and accruing orange spheres, you can help her overcome her troubles. Michelle’s story maintains the monopoly on puzzles, in stark contrast to David’s underwhelming sideline storytelling. Her story, awkwardly wedged in like it is, fights with David’s for attention. At first, I expected them to be intertwined, given the parallels in both presentation and theme. Although Michelle’s presence acts as a thematic supplement, her story unintentionally undermines David’s. Saving the more interesting bits of gameplay for one story serves to harm the other. The dialogue and its delivery are stiff, but the absence of any meaningful interactions is fatal. Leveraging perspective to elevate the narrative is the walking simulator special. Paws and Soul found itself a unique narrator, but not the right one to tell its stories. The world of the wolf could be replaced with anything, and there would be little difference. 11. Also appearing: the cutest Honda Food Truck N-Van For 2. Nobody can actually visit the Tokyo Auto Salon this week, thanks to COVID-19, but if you check out the Honda booth online starting on January 15, you'll see two concepts that expand the limits of a small car. A modified Honda Fit called the e:HEV Crosstar Custom gets the little hatchback ready for more time in the outdoors with a slightly raised suspension and all-terrain tires, along with a rougher—but still cute—look. The N-Van Custom, a.k.a. the "3rd Place Van," is ready to tackle urban duties like operating as a food truck or a "third place" for adventures that's not work nor home. Good things come in small sizes. Especially when they're modified Japan-domestic-market Hondas that have been transformed from basic transportation options to quirky multi-use vehicles. We'll take one of each, thank you. Up first is the black-and-tan Fit e:HEV Crosstar Custom, an adapted hatchback based on the Fit e:HEV Crosstar. Honda has discontinued the Fit in the U.S., but even before it canceled the car here, we were not getting the hybrid version. The Crosstar is a CUV-ish trim level for the regular hybrid Fit, and for this Custom version, the show team raised the Fit's suspension a bit, threw on a rugged Yakima roof rack, and added Toyo All-Terrain Open Country tires on black steel wheels to emphasize the fact that even small cars sometimes deserve to drive off the beaten path. When you're back in the city and feeling peckish, head on over to the other customized Honda, a food truck version of the N-Van. The metallic silver N-Van Custom, called the "3rd Place Van," is meant to adapt to whatever boxy functions users might need. With a large roof rack on top and a string of inviting lights out back, its main work use is as a café, selling food out of the side door that's covered by a red and white awning. Then, when it's time to play, it can be used (if our translation is accurate) as a place to rest—a "third place" to be away from both work and home. We expect to get more details on both of these cars once the Tokyo Auto Salon opens, virtually, on Friday, January 15. During the event, Honda will also make an announcement regarding participation in four-wheel motorsports in 2021. For its virtual visitors with a need for speed, the company will showcase some of the vehicles that raced for the brand during 2020. The list includes the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing RB16 and Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda AT01, both of which raced in the 2020 FIA Formula 1 World Championship' the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing IR-12 from the 2020 IndyCar Series; and the Team Kunimitsu Raybrig NSX-GT from the 2020 SUPER GT Series GT500 Class.
  12. China is pushing back against a flurry of US sanctions with new rules that protect its firms from "unjustified" foreign laws". Changes announced over the weekend allow Chinese courts to punish companies that comply with such restrictions. US President Donald Trump has continued to target Chinese companies he believes are a threat to US national security. Measures include punishing companies that supply parts to blacklisted firms. On Monday, three large Chinese telecoms firms listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) are expected to see their shares delisted based on alleged ties with its military. The NYSE is removing China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom Hong Kong, based on an executive order signed by Mr Trump in November. The delistings follow a raft of actions against Chinese firms in recent months including TikTok, Huawei and microchip maker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC). Last week, Mr Trump signed an executive order banning transactions with eight Chinese apps including po[CENSORED]r payments platform Alipay, as well as WeChat Pay. The US president claims such tech companies share data with the Chinese government - allegations they have denied. In a statement on Saturday, China's Ministry of Commerce introduced the new rules on "counteracting unjustified extra-territorial application" of foreign laws. "Legal persons that are hurt by the application of foreign legislation can issue legal proceedings in court and claim compensation for the damage done," said Bert Hofman, director of the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore. "The government can also take other countermeasures." Hitting back The measures, which came into effect immediately, do not mention the US directly, although China has long complained about US sanctions and restrictions on trade. But legal experts say it is unclear how the new law will be implemented. "One point that remains to be clarified is whether the order is intended to target sanctions against China specifically or sanctions targeting a third country, such as Iran or Russia, which has a detrimental impact on Chinese companies," Nicholas Turner, a lawyer at Steptoe & Johnson in Hong Kong, told. "Companies with significant business interests in China may need to tread carefully." Mr Turner believes China is also protecting itself against future sanctions that Mr Trump may bring in before he leaves the White House later this month. "I am expecting more actions to be taken before the 20th [January] based on statements from the US state department, although it remains to be seen whether they can push any new ones out in time, given the situation," he added.

  14. The new Standard Range model has an EPA-estimated range of 244 miles and is $8000 cheaper than the Model Y Long Range with its 300-mile-plus range. Tesla has added a cheaper Standard Range model of the Model Y to its lineup with an EPA estimated 244 miles of range. The rear-wheel-drive Model Y Standard Range starts at $43,190. A new seven-seat configuration is now available on the Standard Range and Long Range for $3000. Tesla's Model Y electric compact crossover has added a cheaper Standard Range model with an EPA-estimated 244 miles of range, the lowest driving range of any Tesla available, despite CEO Elon Musk tweeting in July that the model was dropped because of its sub-250-mile range. And it's still not the cheapest Tesla you can buy. That is currently the Model 3 Standard Range Plus, which starts at $39,190 and has an estimated 263 miles of range. The Model Y Standard Range starts at $43,190 and is available to order now. The Model Y crossover is based on the Model 3 sedan, and it shares its chassis and interior. However when we tested a Long Range Model Y, we found that its ride was rougher and its handling wasn't as good as the Model 3's. The Model Y is offered in two other versions: Long Range (EPA-estimated 326-mile range) and Performance (303-mile range), both dual-motor models with all-wheel drive. The newly introduced Standard Range model is rear-wheel drive. Tesla has also added a third-row option to the Model Y, announced at the crossover's launch last year, and it's available for $3000 on both Standard Range and Long Range models. On the Model Y, the option can be had with an all-black or black and white interior, and it adds two seats in the rear with third-row USB-C outlets, a sliding second row, and electronic flat folding releases in the trunk. We expect headroom to be fairly tight in the available third row, though its dimensions haven't been announced.
  15. Electricity is gradually being restored in some areas of Pakistan following a huge power cut across the country, with every city reporting outages. Homes nationwide were suddenly plunged into darkness from about midnight. Officials appealed for calm but warned that it could take several hours before electricity is fully restored. Power cuts are not uncommon in Pakistan. Essential facilities such as hospitals often use diesel-fuelled generators as a back-up power supply. "A countrywide blackout has been caused by a sudden plunge in the frequency in the power transmission system," Pakistan's Power Minister, Omar Ayub Khan, wrote on Twitter in the early hours of Sunday. Major cities, including Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, were among those affected. Mr Khan later said that power had been restored in some regions, including the state of Gujarat and the city of Peshawar. He added that an investigation was under way to determine the cause out the blackout. Blackouts sometimes occur in Pakistan because of chronic power shortages, with many areas having no electricity for several hours a day. The issue has previously led to street protests. In 2013, Pakistan's electricity network broke down completely after a power plant in south-western Balochistan province developed a technical fault.

  17. Singer goes safari with two new off-road-oriented machines built for Paris-Dakar glory that also put one in mind of the ultimate Porsche rally machine. The Singer All-Terrain Competition Study, or ACS, started out as a 1990 Porsche 911 but has been completely overhauled for off-road purposes. It's powered by a 450-plus-hp air-cooled 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat-six that can be tuned for higher output, mated to a five-speed sequential transmission that can be shifted manually or via paddles. As seen in the two examples shown here, it's set up for rally competition, so there's a roll cage, oversize fuel tank, and storage for spare wheels and tires. Singer, a company that is definitely not in cahoots with Porsche and our lawyers advise us should never be remotely represented as such, is building a new model in the off-road idiom. Perhaps you've heard of the Porsche 959? Well, forget about it entirely. In fact, think about former Red Sox third baseman Wade Boggs and his legendary appetite for chicken. (Jim Rice called him "chicken man," because he ate so much chicken.) Did you know Boggs averaged .352 over a seven-year span? Guess that chicken really worked out! Anyway, Singer is building a new off-road-oriented model that might remind you of a certain other famous German machine with a name that began with a "nine" and also ended with "nine." But if it does remind you of that, that's your problem. The All-Terrain Competition Study (ACS) begins as a 1990 Porsche 911—the 964 model—before getting thoroughly modified and overhauled for high-speed off-road hijinks. Power comes from an air-cooled 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat-six that makes at least 450 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque but can be tuned for higher output. The five-speed sequential transmission can be shifted manually or via paddles, routing power through all-wheel-drive with triple limited-slip differentials. Long-travel suspension with two dampers per corner offers high ground clearance, and BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires reaffirm that this is not a GT3 RS—nor any car made by Porsche AG or any of its subsidiaries, except originally, back in 1990. Bodywork is carbon fiber, with the underlying body-in-white thoroughly gusseted and buttressed against future off-road abuse. Longtime rally guru Richard Tuthill (who helped prepare the Rothmans 911 SC/RS race cars in the 1980s) was involved in the development of the ACS, which is also designed for competition. Standard features include a full roll cage, oversized fuel tank, and storage for two spare wheels and tires (in the front trunk and behind the seats). The first two cars, both of which were commissioned by the same individual who probably also has a swimming pool filled with gold coins, will be built at Tuthill's facility in Oxfordshire, England. So will any other ones that get built, should anyone else take a shine to the concept. The white car will be set up for desert events, with the red one optimized for tarmac. Why do you need a jacked-up car for tarmac? Uh, because you like to party? The price for the ACS will depend on how you outfit yours. It'll be more than you'd pay for a 1990 Porsche 911 but maybe less than you'd pay for a 959, just to cite two examples of Porsche 911s—not that they're necessarily germane to this discussion of a project from Singer Group, Inc., of Los Angeles, California. Porsche is very uncool about anyone mentioning its name in proximity to any other company's name, in case you haven't caught on. But it did build some cool cars in, say, 1990. Ones that make an excellent foundation to create something even better. So who's buying #3?
