  1. Audi doesn’t specify exactly when you’ll be able to summon this AI:ME self-driving city car to pick you up from Bingo, probably because our autonomous promised land is constantly slipping further into the future. However, it does paint a very clear picture of what its autonomous version of the Audi A3 will look like, once technology and legislation catches up. Unlike the 2017 AIcon concept (AI is Audi’s autonomous sub-brand), which focused on long-range journeys and ditched the steering wheel altogether for Level 5 autonomy, the AI:ME is aimed specifically at urban driving. It’s Level 4, so equipped to handle hands-off driving in designated parts of cities, but has a steering wheel and pedals to hand back control elsewhere. It’s rear-wheel drive, all-electric with a 65kWh battery and has 168bhp at its disposal. But all this is inconsequential says Audi, because when a computer is taking care of the driving, it’s the interior ambience and functionality that matters. First of all, it’s big. Bigger than an A3 despite the same footprint on the road – you can thank shorter overhangs and a longer wheelbase for that. It has magnetic cupholders and plate holders so you enjoy a meal on the move… using metal crockery stolen from a prison canteen. Feel a food coma coming on? Stretch out using the foot rests under the dash, and just stare at the actual plants growing from the “pergola” in the back.
  2. Until the VW Golf Mk8 gets over 300bhp and four-wheel drive, it’s quite simply the fastest VW Golf. And more. See, the smart thinking driver always knew that though the R-badged Golfs had more power, more driveshafts and cost more money than the tartan-seated GTI, it was the slower car that was lighter, sweeter to drive, and better value. All that changed with the Golf Mk7 R. For the first time, R trumped GTI. The formula changed little from the previous Golf R: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine up front, four-wheel drive, and a choice of manual or dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. The look was pretty much the same too: a classy Golf, with some big wheels, stretched intakes and four exhausts this time, instead of two. Seems like overkill. However, we can forgive the Golf R its over-piped bottom, because it’s brilliant. Somehow, VW turned out a car that wasn’t just faster, more sonorous and agile than the GTI, but managed to be palpably better than its cousin, the Audi S3. For some time, this was Top Gear’s very favourite hot hatch. Our 2014 hot hatch of the year award-winner, no less. During its life VW added power (then, curiously, took it away again), offered a Performance Pack with bigger brakes and a naughty exhaust, and sold the Golf R as a three-door hatchback, a five-door hatch, or as a wagon, albeit with the seven-speed paddleshift gearbox as the only transmission. Thanks to low finance rates making it affordable at around £300 a month, it was a massive hit in the UK, and deservedly so.

    Tesla Model S

Tesla’s first mass-market all-electric car was launched – would you believe – way back in 2012. In EV-years, that’s a very long time ago indeed. Advances in battery technology and the like mean EVs have come a very long way since then, yet somehow the Model S still does the business. It stills feels fresh – to drive and live with. This four-door, five-seat saloon is the car that established Elon Musk’s California-based company as a force to be reckoned with, a company whose products deserve to stand alongside the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. The Model S might have a fairly conventional silhouette – but what lurks beneath is far from it. Well, it was in 2012. Two electric motors draw power from either a 75 or 100kWh battery pack, driving all four wheels through a single-speed transmission. The drivetrain lives in a kind of skateboard, with the body bolted on top. This keeps the centre of gravity nice and low (battery packs are heavy old things, and the Model S has a much bigger one than most other mainstream EVs), which aids handling and means there’s loads of storage space in the cabin. Performance is… ample. A quick YouTube search reveals thousands of videos of these things beating Lamborghinis, Ferraris, McLarens, Porsches and so-on away from the lights. The fastest Model S, the P100D, claims 0-62mph in less than 2.5 seconds, and even the slower, cheaper 75D does the same in 4.2 seconds. It’s addictively fast, whatever the spec – and that’s bad news for range, which Tesla puts at 304 miles for the 75D, 393 miles for the 100D and 381 miles for the flagship P100D. But that’s on the old NEDC cycle, and therefore a bit unrealistic. In reality, the 75D ought to run for over 200 miles on a single charge. And if you do find yourself running low, owning a Tesla gives access to a network of high-speed chargers called ‘Superchargers’ that can top you up in minutes, not hours. There are more than 10,000 stations worldwide. Prices run from just under £80k for the base 75D, right the way up to £130k for the balls-out P100D. Monthly payments can seem pretty expensive too – just remember you’re not paying for fuel, road tax or congestion charge…

  15. A New York man has died after being crushed by an empty car accidentally started by remote control. Michael Kosanovich, 21, had been standing between two parked 2002 Lexus IS300s, on 6 December, when one of them had been started remotely by its owner, police said. The car rolled forward and he was pinned between the two vehicles. Bystanders tried to push them apart but as they did so, the car rolled forward and crushed him again. Mr Kosanovich was taken to hospital with severe trauma to his torso and legs, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD). He died of his injuries on 7 December. The NYPD said Mr Kosanovich had been inspecting one of the vehicles at the time of the accident, intending to buy it. A spokeswoman for Toyota Motor North America told BBC News: "Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Michael Kosanovich. "Although many details are unknown at this time, we have reached out to local law enforcement to offer support in the investigation." Toyota added that Lexus "did not offer a factory-installed remote start in the 2002 IS" car model. This would suggest such a remote ignition system would have needed to be retrofitted to work with the 2002 Lexus IS300. The system's instruction manual warns users they should never remotely start the engine if they are "unaware of the circumstances surrounding the vehicle" as it could pose a threat to the lives of anyone in the car's vicinity.
