  3. Whether you're playing the single-player World Tour mode or competing against other players, most of your time in SSX is spent racing or tricking your way down snowy mountain courses. Those courses are set in Alaska, Siberia, the Alps, and 7 other regions, and although they're much more rooted in reality than those seen in many SSX games, these real-world locations have been given the extreme treatment. You won't leap over congested freeways or speed down the slope of an oversized pinball machine as in previous games, but you will trick off of your helicopter and grind on rails that snake through the cavernous heart of Kilimanjaro. The PS3 version includes the exclusive Mount Fuji of Japan, which you get when you redeem the online pass that's enclosed with new copies of the game and can be purchased separately from the online store. Mount Fuji is one of the more tranquil environments in the game, and the only one that doesn't have a deadly descent associated with it. The environments are vast and majestic. Details like sunlight sparkling on the surface or swirling flurries of snow capture the natural beauty, as well as the harsh conditions, of these locales so effectively that you can almost feel the bracing air enter your lungs. These details become all the more impressive when you fly past them; the smooth frame rate and immersive environments come together to create a truly impressive and exhilarating sense of speed. During a good run, the way you flow seamlessly from one thing to the next--from boosting down a slope to grinding along a rail to tricking wildly through the air--can make you feel like a superstar. Tricks are central to SSX even during race events because pulling tricks off is how you fill your boost meter. The controls for tricking are intuitive and feel great, and they allow you to use either the right thumbstick or the face buttons. If you want to grab the left side of your board with your left hand, you simply press the thumbstick left or hit square. If you want to grab the front of your board with your right hand, you quickly tap right or circle to indicate your right hand and then up or triangle to indicate the front of the board. All the while, you can use the left thumbstick to spin and flip effortlessly. The simplicity of the controls makes doing what you want to do a snap. If you prefer something that more closely resembles the controls of the early SSX games, there's a "classic" control option as well. It's the risk-versus-reward element of tricking that makes it so exciting. When you catch big air, you want to trick as long as you can to maximize your boost (and your points, if it's a trick event), but if you hold it for just an instant too long, you wipe out when you hit the ground, and all your tricking was for naught. Do you do simple ground tricks to maintain your combo and keep building up your score multiplier? Or do you play it safe and stop tricking to cash in the combo with your current multiplier? It's a balance you constantly need to maintain to get the best times and highest scores, and it's so rewarding to stick the landing after pulling off an especially risky trick combination. The thrill of such moments is enhanced by the great sound design. The eclectic soundtrack includes shimmering pop, funky R&B, and pulsating electronica, and when you leap from a mountain to catch big air, the music fades, as if it emanates from the surface down below. When you hit the ground, it kicks back in at full strength. If you've tricked enough to fill up your boost meter, the music gets remixed into Run-DMC's "It's Tricky," which reprises its significant role from SSX Tricky in this game. Being in the "tricky" state also means you have unlimited boost while it lasts, and you can do ubertricks, which are worth more points. Score enough points in this mode and you get access to even wilder super ubertricks. The relationship between the game's adapting music and your actions gives your landings a satisfying sonic impact that complements the physical one. Satellite surveys of the real-world mountain regions in SSX were used in forming the terrain, but clearly the hands of humankind have molded these environments to make them not only traversable but also conducive to high speeds and big trick opportunities. The end results are exceptional; numerous viable routes and intertwining pathways make the environments feel organic, which makes you feel like you're pioneering your own way down these slopes. Your helicopter pilot surveys the terrain from overhead and sometimes provides warnings about upcoming hazards or suggestions about which route to take, not entirely unlike a co-driver in a rally racing game informing you of upcoming turns. These tips can be quite helpful--particularly until you've done a run enough times to learn its ins and outs for yourself--but if you find the pilot's chatter distracting, you can always turn it off. Earlier SSX games never needed anything like this guidance because there was rarely much danger. There was little sense that you were competing against the environment itself, but the new SSX is different. It's much more challenging; the environments are more treacherous; and in the single-player World Tour mode, your AI opponents are tough enough to put your skills to the test. There may be many viable routes through these courses, but there are also numerous pitfalls, and if you fall into a chasm (you will), the game won't just reset you back on the course. Instead, you must use the rewind feature (similar to the one seen in many auto racing games of late) to roll time backward and find a suitable spot to resume your run from, but this is not without its penalty. In race events, other riders continue on unaffected, and there's a particular sting to seeing an opponent fly forward past you while you are moving yourself backward out of disaster. In trick events, where the winner is the one who scores the most points, rewinding carries with it a point penalty. And then, there are the deadly descents, the most grueling events in SSX. There's one in each region; each presents a different sort of challenge and limits your number of rewinds. If you first approach these via the World Tour, there's a smooth difficulty curve that makes advancing from one to the next easier. Your first is Mount Robson in the Rockies, a course littered with trees. High speeds and huge tricks are unimportant here; it's all about maneuvering carefully to avoid impact with these natural hazards. Failure here and on subsequent deadly descents is likely, and you may get frustrated, but when you finally master the terrain, there's a real feeling of triumph. Weaving and leaping your way through a tangle of trees unscathed is all the more exhilarating because there's a very real possibility of an ugly wipeout. A few deadly descents require you to make active use of new equipment; the coolest example is Patagonia's Fitz Roy, where you need to employ a wingsuit to glide through the windy air and over some chasms. Some of the deadly descents work better than others; the freezing cold of the shadows on Antarctica's Mount Slaughter is a thrilling threat to avoid, while the constant encroachment of tunnel vision brought on by oxygen deprivation on Mt. Everest is more of an annoyance. But on the whole, these challenging runs are a great way to close out your time in each region in the World Tour, and they're a great place for multiplayer competition as well. The World Tour is a good way to familiarize yourself with the environments and mechanics of SSX, but the action really heats up in the robust multiplayer modes. The Explore mode lets you aim for medal targets and compete against times and scores set by friends on any of the dozens of runs around the game's globe. The performances of your friends here show up as ghosts, and the ghosts leave glowing trails in their wakes, which look cool and are quite useful. If a rival of yours charts a particularly speedy and efficient path through a run, for instance, you can see the route he or she took. Deadly descent events here challenge you and your friends to see who can travel the farthest; when you make it to the bottom of a run, you're sent right back up to the top via helicopter to continue racking up distance. The other multiplayer option is Global Events, which are competitions that have set time limits; they might last for a day or a week, and tens of thousands of players can compete in them. Depending on how your performance stacks up against other entrants, you're placed in a bracket--diamond, platinum, gold, and so on--and the higher your bracket, the more credits you earn when the event comes to a close. SSX constantly keeps you updated on pertinent happenings in both the Explore and Global Events modes, informing you when a friend shatters your time in a certain race or when your performance no longer qualifies for a certain bracket. And it makes it easy to jump right back to one of those events to try to improve your performance.

  6. Just like the way music downloads and streaming made CDs and vinyl obsolete, many consider cloud computing to do the same to hardware. But, just as hipsters rediscovered vinyl, Silicon Valley is reclaiming hardware. This year, hardware developers such as Nvidia reporter record revenues, Intel’s shares shot up by 15%. Even Google wants to get in on the action making their first move into edge computing, releasing a new tensor processing unit (TPU). Furthermore, the entire Philadelphia semiconductor index has doubled since 2016. But why? Well, a recent report from Accenture suggests that its because existing IT infrastructures may not simply be able to keep up with the requirements of next-generation technology. >See also: Moving from central to the edge: Is cloud decentralisation inevitable? According to the report, Internet of Thinking: Creating Intelligent Distributed Systems: “Robotics, immersive reality, artificial intelligence, and connected devices are bringing a new level of technological sophistication to the physical world. Enabling intelligence for the next generation of technology demands an overhaul of existing IT infrastructures. A balance of cloud and edge computing along with a renewed focus on hardware can help companies deliver intelligence everywhere.” Supporting research from Accenture found that, 63% of respondents, from a global survey of over 6,380 business executives, believe it will be critical in the next two years to leverage custom hardware and accelerators to meet the computing demands of intelligent environments. While 83% say that edge architecture will speed the maturity of many technologies. Too much for the cloud to handle There is no question IoT will continue to grow exponentially over the coming years. According to Gartner, in the near future, almost everything will be connected to the internet: by 2020, IoT technology will be in 95% of electronics for new product designs. IDC also forecasts worldwide spending on IoT will reach $772.5 billion in 2018 and will top $1.1 trillion in 2021. >See also: Everything you need to know about edge computing This means more demand on the computing infrastructure than the current centralised cloud infrastructure can handle. With this in Mind, how should CTOs prepare? Well, one option is to decentralise the cloud. According to Siavash Alamouti, CEO of mimik: There are vast amounts of unused computing resources at the edge that sit idle most of the time. For instance, the collective computing power of 50 million Sony PlayStation 4s in the market today is roughly four times that of Amazon Web Services 27 data centres around the world. There are billions of PCs, tablets, set-top-boxes, smart routers, connected appliances, and smartphones which collectively have millions of times the computing resources of central cloud.” >See also: Why the term ‘cloud’ could be obsolete by 2025 due to being embeded A renewed focus on hardware and a shift to the edge According to Accenture, at a time when many companies have grown accustomed to software-driven solutions as their go-to strategies, it will pay to renew your focus on hardware. The report adds: “For nearly every business, modernising infrastructures for intelligent actions will mean taking advantage of hardware accelerators: special-purpose hardware that is exceptionally fast at a very specific task.” “To meet the computing and power demands of edge-based decision-making, there is simply no other option.” >See also: 7 ways to prepare an IT network for the Internet of Things Nominations are now open for the Women in IT Awards Ireland and Women in IT Awards Silicon Valley. 7. Types of Computer Software System Software System software coordinates the activities and functions of hardware and software, and it controls the operations of computer hardware and provides an environment or platform for all the other types of software to work in. It is the most basic type of software in any computer system, which is essential for other programs, applications and the whole computer system to function. (System software examples – Microsoft Windows XP, Mac O S, Linux, Windows Vista, Ubuntu, device drivers, etc.) Application Software Application software is what helps the user perform the tasks of his/her choice. They are non-essential software which are installed and run, depending upon the requirements, in the environment provided by the system software. (Application software examples – MS Office, OpenOffice, Media Players, MS Access, educational software, media development software, Antivirus software, etc. ) Programming Software Programming software is used to write, test, debug and develop other software programs and applications. The various programming language editors such as Eclipse – a Java language editor – appear under this category. They are used for creating both the system as well as application software. (Programming software examples – Turbo C, Xilinx, Kiel, compilers, debuggers, Integrated Development Environment (IDE), etc.) Sub-types of Computer Software Apart from the above main types of software there are many other subtypes, which will be mentioned below. Freeware – Freeware is a type of software that anyone can download from the Internet and use for free. (Examples – Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, uTorrent, etc.) Shareware – Shareware is usually distributed for free on a trial basis. It can be shared without violation of any laws. They usually stop working or prompt the user to purchase the full version, once the trial period expires. (Examples – BearShare, Kazaa, Winzip, etc.) Registry Cleaners – When you install a lot of software – or games for example – your computer’s registry becomes clogged. Registry cleaners are used to clean up or delete all the invalid registry entries which has the benefit of speeding up your computer. (Examples- TuneUp Utilities, Eusing, etc.) Content Control Software – This kind of software allows you to control the content that can be accessed by a user on a computer. They are mostly used for restricting access over the Internet. (Example- K9 Web Protection, PGSurfer, etc.) Project Management Software – As its name suggests, project management software is a software package that helps multiple users to work on a project simultaneously. It allows them to schedule events, network with the other users, allocate resources, etc. (Example- Microsoft Office Project Server, HyperOffice, 24SevenOffice, etc.) Utility Software – These are usually small programs that help the management of the hardware and the application software installed on a computer. (Example- Disk defragmenters, Disk cleaners, etc.) Open Source Software – This is a type of software for which the source code is available to all users (open). As such, anyone can make changes to it and release their own new version. (Example – Linux, Android OS, OpenOffice, etc.) Web Browsers – Browsers are programs that allow you to surf or browse web pages on the Internet. (Example – Internet Explorer, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, etc.) With constant advancements in the field of software engineering, several new software and applications are being developed every day. 8. An international mining company has announced that it will launch the world's largest electric truck, at one of its platinum mines in South Africa. The truck, called Fuel Cell Electric, weighs about 290 tons to be approximately 6 times heavier than the world's second largest electric vehicle, the "eDumper" and weighs 45 tons, used to transport lime and marble around a mining facility in Switzerland.Fuel Cell Electric is designed with a hybrid engine that uses a lithium-ion battery and hydrogen fuel cells, which replace conventional diesel engine vehicles commonly used in mines. The truck will have a combined energy store of 1,000 kWh, and the only by-product of waste produced by the engine is water, which is produced only when powered by hydrogen fuel. The truck can also recover small amounts of kinetic energy from the braking system, to charge the lithium-ion battery, according to a report published in the magazine Po[CENSORED]r Mechanics. It will be used later this year in the Mughalaquina mine, one of South Africa's largest platinum reserves, with more than 310,000 ounces of platinum extracted annually. The mine is managed by Anglo American, an international mining group that produces 40% of the world's platinum, as well as diamonds, copper, nickel, iron ore and coal. The company has publicly promised to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, and believes that the company's increased use of electric vehicles can help it achieve this goal. And for Fuel Cell Electric, the company has partnered with Williams Advanced Engineering, a London-based company involved in a variety of energy efficiency and vehicle projects.Williams also designed batteries for electric racing cars, which compete in the FIA Extreme E race track, and used this technology as a starting point for a Fuel Cell Electric truck
  9. Children experience many health problems during their development stages, the most important of which are: high fever. This indicator indicates the presence of a variety of diseases or conditions requiring immediate treatment or the virus. Taking the heat is one of the first steps that parents take to make sure it is above 37 degrees Celsius. Then, the specialist is contacted to prescribe the necessary medications. However, when is your child's temperature abnormal? Is the 38 ° C Appear really dangerous? According to Roni Sayyad, a pediatrician and newborn, the temperature is abnormal when it exceeds 38 degrees and above, and this requires communication with the doctor and treatment. As for the temperature below 38 degrees, it is considered normal temperature. How to measure the temperature correctly? It is important to know that the thermometer is used correctly. It is noteworthy that the heat measured through the "outlet" is the true heat of the body. There are two methods of measuring temperature, the first: from the body door through the mercury balance. Second: the electronic scale. 10 easy recipes for your toddler to become a "chef" Heat can also be measured by ear, and doctors recommend it after the age of two years with an increase of half a degree over it. Across the forehead, one degree must be added to obtain the heat of the body door.In addition, doctors did not favor an oral thermometer five years ago with a half-degree increase to parallel the body temperature. Doctors prefer to stay away from measuring the temperature from under the armpit completely, because the child is very mobile and must add one degree to it.
  10. On Sunday, the Iraqi parliament holds an extraordinary session called by Prime Minister-designate Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi to give confidence to his government. Within hours of the upcoming session, the main political forces renewed their refusal to give confidence to Allawi's government, and the Union of Forces demanded his partners in the political process from Al-Fateh Alliance and others to replace Allawi with another character, according to a Sky News Arab reporter. In the field, the Iraqi authorities closed the Al-Sink Bridge and the Green Zone in the center of the Iraqi capital, as a precautionary measure for po[CENSORED]r demonstrations in which coordination groups from the southern regions of Iraq participate. And the Iraqi parliament failed, on Thursday, to hold a scheduled session to give confidence to the Allawi government, and was postponed because the quorum was not complete, which pushes the country to more political differences. The announcement of the upcoming government formation comes at a time when anti-ruling demonstrations continue, which led to its launch in the beginning of last October to the resignation of Adel Abdul Mahdi's government. The demonstrators refuse to assign Allawi, the former minister, on the grounds that he is close to the ruling elite against which they protest and demand their departure. Since the beginning of the demonstrations, about 550 people, the vast majority of them young demonstrators, have been killed, while about 3,000 have been injured.

  12. According to a Deloitte survey, distributed and remote collaboration is expected to grow across multiple functions, particularly IT, in the coming years. The survey reveals that the share of subcontracted functions increased by 31% in 2016, compared to 26% in 2014. The numbers show that leading organizations choose remote resources to drive transformational change and improve business results, especially when it comes to software development. To achieve their transformational goals, they expect a high level of software development predictability from their partners – on par with results they can get from in-house teams. These companies want to leverage the advantages of remote collaboration, but also escape from the following concerns: The result not complying with the initial requirements, Unsatisfactory product quality, Low level of productivity, Communication difficulties and overheads. To meet these concerns effectively and ensure predictability of distributed projects, IT providers need to adjust their approach to service delivery. The framework, referred to as Predictive Software Engineering (PSE), addresses the bottlenecks and reconstructs the reliable approach to delivering software development services. PSE advocates the development of custom software products in a way that is transparent by involving all stakeholders. The framework is specifically tailored for using a global pool of talented professionals. As result, clients receive a high-quality software product within a guaranteed timeframe and intended budget. Today companies use it to ensure that the software development process is precise and predictable. [ Beware the 9 warning signs of bad IT architecture and see why these 10 old-school IT principles still rule. | Sign up for CIO newsletters. ] Why push for predictability? In today’s world of analytics and connectivity, it is increasingly more expected that services are delivered in a predictable timeline. Traditionally, software development services include collaboration and team-work focused practices such as SCRUM and Agile, where project managers are developing products dynamically and involving multiple stakeholders. Nevertheless, existing processes fall short of being a “science”, despite the major of most stakeholders would lay with some computer science. While the current strategies of managing and delivering software development are functional, they often focus only on technical (aka ‘coding’) aspects of software development. Agile tries to make the development process visible, while leaving out the bigger business goals. Predictive software engineering is one of the few frameworks that attempts to encompass the whole spectrum of business activities surrounding software development. The framework consists of seven specific concepts. Together they ensure transparency, as well as render the process controllable and predictable in its essence. 7 concepts of predictive Software Engineering Meaningful customer care provides a well-defined governance structure and ensures clear communication of all stakeholders at every stage of the process and communication level, from CEO who builds a strategic vision, to software engineers who implement an efficient technical solution. The concept involves the use of an online customer portal containing various project dashboards, contract details, escalation paths, feeds to various systems, stats and instant feedback. Proven productivity involves organization of centers of excellence, benchmarking, propagation of best practices, expert reviews and project inspections to ensure that the team takes right decisions in every project stage and delivers top output. Efficient distributed teams are created by focusing on elaborate communication mechanisms and distributed development processes to utilize the best for the task talent available. Disciplined agile delivery is an Agile methodology scaled to enterprise level and adapted for distributed teams. It is solution-focused, takes business goals into account, and provides a scientific and measurable approach to software development. Quality Management Platform (QMP) as a techno-methodological system of processes, practices and software tools aimed to drastically reduce technical debt and improve quality of the software by means of an automated measuring of key software quality metrics. It consists of controlling and measuring of eight dimensions of every software product, namely: source code quality; solution architecture and data model; documentation, usability and UI; security; performance; implementation of business logic; data quality; and use of third-party code. Transparent end-toe-end control focuses on stimulating productivity and proactivity of the team. The client defines how strict it can be. Along with default opportunities to track task completion, timesheets and attendance logs in secure environment, the client can request adding video streaming, time usage and data control systems. Sound human development emphasizes the importance of retaining and growing talent through individual programs for personal and professional development of all team members. The suggested framework proved to be a reliable way to deliver a guaranteed end-result by combining these seven principles of software development into one model. With this framework, software development gets much closer to a precise and scientific discipline. [ Become a Microsoft Office 365 administrator in record time with this quick start course from PluralSight. ] Why do companies need PSE? The Predictive Software Engineering framework assists companies with forming a development team most suitable for their project, i.e. equipped with required set of skills, experience and knowledge, as well as achieving the best overall efficiency, both financial and productivity-wise. Additionally, it guarantees getting a product that fully meets business objectives with the least technical debt possible. Companies that leverage this model will be able to eliminate uncertainty in software development projects and transform product development into the process that guarantees results, making software development predictable, and business results easier to attain.

I wrote- Asmaa Morsi Walking like sport does not lose weight, is the summary of a study published by the British Daily Mail newspaper, on an experiment conducted by the American University of Brigham Young, which hit the wall display all the concepts that have been established for decades. The study confirmed that the secret to maintaining an ideal body lies in the food intake and the calories it contains, as weight loss depends only on those calories. She noted that walking 10 thousand steps only burns 500 calories, which is equivalent to a meal of large French fries from fast food restaurants, and that cutting distances on foot is not sufficient to ensure the thinnest body. Also, there is no specific amount of walking to prevent weight gain on its own, but the whole matter depends on the amount of food eaten and the calories it contains.

On Saturday, Iranian media announced the death of a member of parliament who had not been elected for a few days, while reports were confused about the cause of death.According to the Fars agency, which is close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, the deputy from the city of Astana Ashrafieh, northern Iran, Muhammad Ramdani, died on Friday evening.Another agency in the city was quoted by the agency as saying that Ramadan had died after contracting the flu. However, Iranian opposition media said that the deputy died as a result of infection with the Coruna virus, which is spreading among citizens and politicians in Iran alike.Media reports said that the results of a Ramadan examination showed that he had the virus.Ramadani won a seat on the city in the elections held on February 21, which observers saw as an additional reason for the outbreak of the virus. Iran announces the closure of all schools due to Corona Corona infected .. Does Iran hide the real number? According to official Iranian media, a number of officials were injured, including the Deputy Minister of Health and members of Parliament, and a member of the Expediency Council, the Fars Agency said was recovering. And Iran has turned into a hotspot for the Corona virus, also known as "Covid 19", in the Middle East, and it has been a source of infection for many in the region with this virus, which causes acute pneumonia. According to Iranian official figures, 43 people died of the virus as of Saturday, while more than 600 others were infected, in the highest toll outside the Far East. The Council accused the Iranian regime of continuing to obscure and cover up the reality of the infections, as well as that it had not taken any serious step to contain the virus.

  18. Sam Fisher is the gravel-voiced protagonist who is as much a part of Splinter Cell's identity as goggles and guns. The murder of his daughter Sarah has siphoned away the hope and joy in Sam's life, and he's left with a single focus: find her killer. A few old friends put Sam on the trail, but that trail isn't a straightforward one (is it ever?), and Sam soon finds himself wrapped up in a conspiracy far greater than it first appears. You encounter a few legitimate surprises along the way, though the story isn't as intriguing as the way in which it is told. The text of your current mission is stretched across walls and angled up pipes, as are simple indications of Sam's emotional state. ("Anger," indicates one display; "Guilt," shows another.) Black-and-white flashbacks play out on certain surfaces as if someone is broadcasting Sam's thoughts through an old movie projector. This environmental integration is remarkably effective, broadcasting updates and emotional states as if they are burned into his soul and then etched directly onto his retinas. Actor Michael Ironside again does a good job as Sam; some scenes are thick with his desperation and exasperation. The supporting cast keeps up with him, making it easy to identify with the old acquaintances that have his back. That something has changed is clear from the moment you lead Sam through the initial level. Sam can still crouch and slink of course, but Conviction's stealth is centered around its cover system. You can take cover and press against any vertical surface easily, from walls and curbs to vehicles and filing cabinets. You may then slip quickly to the next cover spot, assuming the visual indicator appears at the cover spot you want to zip to next. It's an intuitive system, and you can use it to quickly position yourself in all the right ways, often so you can clock a wandering guard over the head as he passes by without being seen by his cohorts in crime. You get some good interface tools to help you get your bearings when trying to stay out of sight. If you're shrouded in darkness and invisible to your enemies, everything turns black and white, aside from targets and important environmental objects. If you're seen, a ghostly image of your form will remain at your last known location, and the AI will direct its attention there. Warning alerts appear and sound if you are caught or are in immediate danger of being caught. The black-and-white effect can obscure things a bit much sometimes, but overall, these are sensible interface elements that toss you important information with a minimum of distraction. But you won't spend as much time in the shadows in Conviction as you did in previous games. Sam is still vulnerable; you can't just wander into a horde of hired guns in broad daylight. But in Conviction, Sam conducts business on his own terms, and as such, is far more aggressive than before. To this end, you can mark multiple enemies at once (up to four, depending on which weapon you're packing and whether you've upgraded it) and then execute them in a single astonishing move. To pull off a mark-and-execute maneuver, you first have to perform a close-quarters kill. Once you've taken down your initial target, the execution is ready, and as long as each of your targets is in range and not obscured by some object or another (you know it’s a go when the tag markers turn red), all you need to do is press a single button. Time slows a bit, the camera zooms toward each enemy in turn with a subtle swoosh, and your victims crumple to the ground, no match for a trained killing machine with a chip on his shoulder. It's a little disconcerting when a target moves behind a wall during an execution and your bullet clips right through it, but as a rule, the slick camera moves and audio cues make executions a rush. In fact, most of the campaign's best moments come from clever use of execution tactics. For example, a roomful of guards aware of your presence might be flanking your location, giving you little hope of escape. Some quick marking, a slick hand-to-hand murder, and a zoom-zoom-zoom execution is a compelling and exciting way to eliminate the threat. Conviction tries its hand at other explosive moments, but these don't come together in such a dramatic way. You can occasionally use environmental objects as tools of destruction--shoot a chandelier so that it falls on a foe's head, or shoot an enormous explosive tanker, for example--but the rarity of these opportunities makes the scattered few that exist seem like a tease. More of a tease are the few interrogations you perform on key witnesses. In these highly scripted scenes, you grab your target and bash the answers out of him by jamming him into environmental objects clearly waiting to be splattered with blood. Unfortunately, the first interrogation you perform--a bloody bathroom beatdown--is the best in the entire game. In the rest, the invisible walls that hem you in and the "hey, look at me" nature of three or four conveniently placed objects make interrogations more predictable than provocative. Had they been more interactive (think takedowns in 2008's The Bourne Conspiracy), they could have been extraordinary; instead, they're violent but shrug-worthy. Many levels do grant you welcome flexibility in how to approach the task at hand. You might shimmy up a pipe, throw a remote camera (one of a few gadgets for you to use), lure nearby guards to it, and detonate it--always a good way of getting two or three hostiles out of the way. Or instead, perhaps you'll hang from a ledge and use one of your silenced pistols to thin the crowd with a few well-placed headshots. The flexibility is nice, but Splinter Cell: Conviction isn't much of a challenge, a few tough sequences aside. (Series veterans will want to start on the hardest difficulty setting straightaway.) It's a shame the campaign doesn't make better use of these gadgets. Sonar goggles are nice, but you only need them for bypassing laser traps a few times; otherwise, unless you're having a hard time finding any straggling enemies, you may forget you even have them. You could say the same about the other gadgets in your arsenal, or even the extensive array of weapons you earn and upgrade. That's a disappointment, given the ease of the short six-hour campaign--seven, perhaps, if you prefer silence to stridence--and how well previous Splinter Cell games made your various hi-tech tools seem so indispensable. Splinter Cell: Conviction does go out of its way to throw in some variety, and fortunately, it hits more than it misses. Many levels, such as an early one in an art museum, look colorful and may be approached in a number of different ways. A jaunt through a fairground, a secure checkpoint surrounded by innocent bystanders, and an excursion through an airfield are also particular highlights, because they offer plenty of room to slink about and prepare some exciting executions. Others don't work out so well, such as a flashback level that removes many of the elements that make Conviction so convincing and plays out more like a slightly awkward third-person shooter. A level at the Lincoln Memorial includes an exciting chase sequence--but also an overlong eavesdropping session involving a lot of boring dialogue. Nevertheless, most campaign missions are solid, thanks to careful level design and enemies that are quick to flank when they've spotted you, and quick to spread out when doing so puts the most pressure on you. The AI isn't always spot-on; your adversaries are sometimes slow to respond to grenades tossed directly at their feet, for example. But security contingents are still unpredictable and adaptive enough to keep things interesting. The single-player campaign is very good in spite of its inconsistencies, but Conviction truly comes into its own when you add another player to the mix, whether you do so via Xbox Live, system link, or split-screen. The co-op campaign--a separate story involving a Third Echelon agent and his Russian counterpart--is the game's finest feature. Coordinating attacks leads to remarkably exciting moments, created in part by the ability to pull off dual executions. These allow you to perform executions when one target may be in sight of one player but not the other. Perhaps one of you is hanging from a window ledge, while the other silently flanks from within. The two of you might mark your targets in advance, the first player will yank an unsuspecting guard from the window, and the second will trigger an execution. A few seconds later, you've taken out four or five enemies together in a flurry of slow-motion zooms and profane yelps from your victims. Exhilarating triumphs aren't always planned, however. You might be cornered, only to have your companion appear out of nowhere and snap your predator's neck; or you may discover that the foes descending on you were marked by your buddy, letting you escape from the jaws of death by performing an execution.
  19. There have been plenty of video games based on military combat, so why not a futuristic Dreamcast shooter that puts you behind the controls of a space-age tank on a search-and-destroy mission to save all mankind? While the concept might sound good on paper, Wild Metal fails to hit the mark and instead delivers an experience not worth repeating. While Wild Metal does have a storyline, the game doesn't bother to fill you in on it. There's no opening intro, no cutscenes, no mission briefings, and no real instructions on exactly why you're in a tank and on what you're supposed to do. This makes things confusing until you read the instruction manual, which tells you the backplot and informs you that your basic task is to pilot your tank through the levels, collect a bunch of multicolored power cores (one for each color of the rainbow, how nice!), and then bring them back to your ship. All the while you'll have to deal with a whole lot of terrain that tanks aren't exactly suited to, on top of destroying all the enemies contained within the level. Force fields, sentries, mines, and other tanks will all do their best to stop you from achieving this goal, but you'll find your main enemies are the terrain and the poor camera controls. Since Wild Metal features a wide range of elevations, it's often difficult to see exactly what you want to look at, and the camera controls aren't that much help since the camera only rotates on one elliptical axis. Why any military force would choose a tank for this type of search-and-destroy mission is an obvious question. The terrain would be more suited to a drop ship or helicopter, as power cores are usually hidden in tiny crevices between mountains, and there's usually only one path you can take. And since there's no real map and only an amazingly oversimplified radar to tell you where to go, you'll find that you will be spending most of the time wandering around the level until you happen to bump into where you want to be going. On top of that, the terrain is so bland and repetitive that it's difficult to tell exactly where you've been, which makes it all that more difficult to complete your objective. Wild Metal does feature a fairly nice turret system that, in theory, lets you move and fire in a manner similar to that of a real-life tank. Unfortunately, in execution the turret is always too slow, and without an actual aiming icon it's extremely inaccurate. The analog trigger buttons rotate the turret to and fro, and holding down the fire button controls the elevation of the turret. When you rotate, the camera follows the gun, leaving you to simply guess where you are driving. And since there are all sorts of pitfalls and mountains scattered about the level, you're sure to accidentally drive off the side of a cliff or up the side of an unscalable mountain in the middle of combat, leaving you incredibly frustrated. The overly complex control scheme is done so poorly that it's much easier to simply stop your tank altogether every time you want to take out an enemy. And since there's no sort of accurate way to judge the elevation of your barrel and the arc of your shots, you'll be forced to fire a series of shots that get increasingly closer to your target as you correct yourself. This pretty much ruins any sort of stealth that you may have had, and it's such a tedious process that it ruins combat altogether, and you end up trying your best to simply avoid any sort of hostile situation. While the tank models themselves appear pretty sharp, the rest of the graphics look horrible. The terrain is a smattering of yellows and browns, making you wonder exactly what sort of planet you're actually on. With the exception of the occasional purple pipes or gray mesas, each level looks pretty much the same as the one before it - incredibly bland. Since the levels carry the same overall appearance, they start to blur together, and after a while it seems as if you've been driving through the same few mountains for the last couple of hours. In fact, the only thing that seems to separate the levels is the occasional night mission, which gives the graphics a slightly different spin, but on closer inspection you'll notice that the textures are still the same. The sound is extremely average, aside from a nice crunching sound every time you run over the scraps of recently destroyed enemies. What really kills the whole audio experience is the absolute lack of any background music. Iinstead of suspenseful music edging you on, you get to listen to the drone of the helicopter's rotors while you play. The game does feature a multiplayer mode but doesn't take advantage of all four of the Dreamcast's controller ports. Still, you and a friend can have at each other in one of four different multiplayer arenas. If you want to make things more interesting, you can even change the session from straight fragging to scrambling to collecting all the power cores. Still, the multiplayer
