  1. The authority puts its sticks in the wheels of reviving the economy of the Gaza Strip, and obstructs any international efforts that would rebuild the residential and economic facilities that the Israeli occupation destroyed in the recent aggression and previous wars, while the authority continues to impose its economic sanctions that are consistent with the occupation’s siege to tighten the noose on the residents of the Strip. . The economist, Dr. Osama Nofal, that the Ramallah authority is taking advantage of the powers granted to it by the Paris Economic Agreement to serve its interests in dealing with the Gaza Strip, imposing economic sanctions on the residents of the Strip, and impeding any efforts that would restore reconstruction in the besieged Strip. Nofal told "Palestine" journalist: "The authority puts sticks in the wheels of the file of the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, as it requires donors that their financial aid enters only through its gate, and it wants from this to earn financially to improve its financial situation at the expense of those affected in the Strip." He pointed out that the authority has a previous experience in the file of reconstruction, as the donor funds that were earmarked for the reconstruction of what was destroyed by the occupation in the 2014 war went to fund the treasury of the authority, and residential and economic facilities remained destroyed.” He added that the European Union, which is one of the most important donors to the Palestinians, has reduced its aid to the Gaza Strip. Also, the World Bank stated that the funds for the reconstruction of international donors will be spent through the gate of the authority, and this means that the authority is exerting pressure on international donors .Nofal stated that the authority refuses to form a higher committee to supervise the reconstruction process because it wants to be unique in the funds without accountability or oversight. Although the committee is a necessity to reassure donors that their money will go to its beneficiaries, as well as speed up the reconstruction file, Nofal pointed out that the authority imposes a financial siege on charitable institutions and societies operating in the Gaza Strip because it seeks to worsen the economic situation, as it instructs its banks to stop and impede transfers to institutions Charity Gaza Nofal stressed that the authority obtains clearing funds and taxes from major companies from the Gaza Strip, which are large funds compared to what the authority spends on Gaza, and that the authority does not direct development projects. To reduce poverty and unemployment rates in the Strip, while annual employment in public sector institutions has been suspended for many years, and Gaza's share goes to the West Bank. For his part, the economist, Dr. Samir Al-Daqran: The authority is not interested in finding any economic solution to the Gaza Strip because it is betting on the element of time to attack Gaza. Al-Daqran told Filastin newspaper: "The influential people in Ramallah are trying to use any means that would put pressure on the Gaza Strip, and they are aware that these measures harm the residents of the Strip. He added that Gaza is besieged by the occupation and the Palestinian Authority together, as the Strip is closed at its crossings. Its exports and imports are controlled, and it faces a problem in bringing in its needs for the reconstruction process, and indicated that the Authority is trying to benefit from the resources of Gaza, as it is setting its sights on the gas of the Gaza Strip, as it signed an agreement with an Egyptian company without clarifying the nature and terms of this agreement, taking into account Consider that Gaza gas is one of the best discoveries, as it generates a monthly income of 150 million dollars, and can operate the two power plants in Gaza and the West Bank.Al-Daqran stressed that the PA’s sanctions and siege have caused an increase in poverty, unemployment and food insecurity rates in the Gaza Strip, and prohibited The sector has international projects in various fields, such as water, electricity, infrastructure, and sewage, while the West Bank at those times took Gaza's share of those international shares.
  2. Data from the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture indicate that there are about 15 million stray dogs roaming the streets, causing a major problem for some local residents. Estimates from the Egyptian Ministry of Health show that about two million citizens have been subjected to cases of stigma or attacks from dogs, whether they were stray or owned by people, in different parts of the republic during the past year, which prompted the House of Representatives to hold a special session within the local administration committee to discuss this issue since several months. Some, including official bodies, found that the best solution to address the problem is to poison the animals, which sparked a wave of criticism about the animal rights situation in Egypt. Local administration officials in Egypt say that the poisoning of street animals is carried out based on the complaints of some residents and is carried out in the presence of veterinarians, using approved poisons that do not cause harm to the environment. To poison against human values Roaa Abdel Rahim, an activist in the field of animal welfare, told the BBC, that she was able, in cooperation with a group of her friends in the Nasr City neighborhood, east of Cairo, to find a solution to the problem of stray dogs and cats, whose herds caused a major crisis for the residents of the neighborhood, especially in some remote areas. night hours. Roa Abdul Rahim and her friends managed to raise some money to buy some rabies vaccinations and other treatments for street animals, as well as sterilize the dogs to make them unable to reproduce and produce more puppies. The human rights activist adds that this is much better than killing animals with poison or "unmerciful" shotguns, because religion urges compassion and kindness to animals and not to harm them, noting that the presence of these animals contributes to the process of ecological balance between the living creatures that live among us. The visions give an example of the crisis of the spread of snakes and mice in the neighborhood of the Fifth Settlement near them, when the residents of the neighborhood killed most of the dogs that were present in the area, which led to the disruption of the natural food chain, which caused the spread of these organisms that harm human health after their enemies were eliminated the naturals. big material cost Through the association to which Rua’a belongs, hundreds of sterilization and vaccination operations have been carried out in veterinary clinics, which some of its doctors have volunteered to perform in return for reduced fees in exchange for surgical tools, treatment materials and anesthesia. However, the financial cost of conducting these operations is rather large if we consider the large numbers of stray animals that live in the Egyptian streets. Dr. Mahmoud Kamal, owner of a veterinary clinic that conducts sterilization and vaccination of animals, says that the annual cost of vaccinating an animal against rabies is about 100 Egyptian pounds (US$7), while the average cost of performing sterilization operations for one animal is about 1500 Egyptian pounds (94 dollars). American), and the cost may increase in some cases that require medical care after surgery to prevent infection of wounds and the occurrence of complications, and most of these animals need to remain under medical observation and quarantine for a period of up to about two weeks, according to Dr. Kamal. The veterinarian confirms that the cost of animal sterilization and vaccination is incomparable if these animals are left on the streets, transmitting diseases and infecting humans with “rabies”, which he describes as one of the most dangerous diseases common to animals and humans, for which science has not found an effective treatment so far and may cause the death of those It is infected by either a person or an animal. Kamal refers to what he describes as misinformation about rabies, which is that an animal infected with it may die within a week at most of infection, but he confirms that some research indicates the possibility of the animal remaining carrying the virus that causes rabies for a long period of up to a year without If he shows any symptoms, and during this period, he can cause great problems for those around him, including living beings, including humans. Great damage to the environment Some activists say that the stroquine poison, which is used to kill stray animals, may cause harm to other animals or to anyone who handles the poisoned animal or its corpse after death, and the decomposition of its corpse causes damage to the environment.

  4. Japan's Naomi Osaka, ranked second in the world looking for Olympic glory on her home soil, suffered a setback today, Tuesday, after her exit from the third round of the Tokyo Olympics in the tennis competitions, by falling to the 42nd Czech Marketa Vondrushova 6-1, 6-4, in the "worst loss", according to her description. . Osaka was chosen to light the cauldron at the opening ceremony of the Games last Friday, marking the start of the competitions and became the first female tennis player to receive this honor in the history of the Olympics. Osaka was the favorite to win the gold after the shocking first-seeded Australian Ashleigh Barty was knocked out of the first round on Sunday and third-seeded Belarusian Arina Sabalenka on Monday, especially in the absence of many of the top ten seeded women. "How disappointed am I?," said the four-times major. I'm disappointed after every loss, but I feel like this was more ugly than the other times." In response to a question about the reasons for this painful defeat, “Everything.... if you watch the match, you will notice that. I feel like there are a lot of things I wanted to do and didn't work out today.” The 23-year-old has been absent from the courts since withdrawing from her second-round match at Roland Garros in May, due to the repercussions of her decision to boycott the media, before revealing that she suffers from depression and anxiety problems that also kept her from competing in Wimbledon, before returning to her country's postponed Olympics from Last summer due to the Corona virus and be the star of the opening ceremony. “I definitely think there was a lot of pressure in that," she said. I think it's because I didn't play in the Olympics and the pressure was too much for my first time." "I feel more than ever that I'm just focused on tennis," Osaka said after winning the first round. Running in the Olympics has been a dream I had since I was a child.” However, this dream ended early on a disastrous day in which she committed 32 direct fouls within 68 minutes, compared to only 10 for her opponent, while they tied in the winning kicks (22). “Of course, this is one of the biggest victories of my career,” said Vondrushova, 2019 runner-up at Roland Garros. Naomi is a great player, she has won many Grand Slam titles so I knew it was going to be a tough match. I am happy to qualify.” And the Czech crossed to the quarter-finals, where she will meet the Spaniard Paula Padusa, who defeated Argentine Nadia Podroska 6-2, 6-3. The scene was cleared for world number five Elina Svitolina, who is now the top seed. 5. Defeatism is one of the personality disorders that makes the individual adopt a general behavior of pessimism, frustration, mistrust, and weak will, which turns into a lack of hope in life, and the disappearance of the ability to enjoy the blessings that you possess, and thus dominated by a feeling of helplessness and helplessness. It is believed that the defeatist personality appears from a young age, during the child's battle called the battle of management, which is usually between the child's desires and the control of his parents, and when the child fails to fulfill his desires by submitting to the parents' orders completely, his personality is forever distorted. So; The defeatist is devoted to serving others, even at the expense of his personal desires, because he derives his strength from hiding behind them, but at the same time he complains a lot, because he feels pity for his cruelty at times to himself. What do you know about defeatist thinking? Defeatism is the approach followed by the defeatist personality, and it is a pattern of thinking that is evident during adulthood, and pushes the owner to adopt frustrating and hopeless behaviors, where he always feels disappointed, even if he has choices that may lead him to success. Contrary to belief, a defeatist person possesses the social and practical skills that may enable him to succeed, but he does not trust these abilities, and therefore resorts to giving others the outcome of these abilities in the form of aid until he sees the success that he wishes to achieve through them. defeatist personality traits Psychologists have agreed on a long list of traits through which a defeatist personality can be discovered, which largely coincides with the above definition, as it revolves around the concept of self-confidence, and the individual's interaction with the variables that occur in his life. The defeatist personality lacks self-confidence, as the owner avoids expressing his opinion publicly for fear of the reactions of the surrounding society. She always expects failure in her next move, as the owner focuses on the negatives of any step they take instead of the positives. The person with a defeatist personality is usually a complainant, enjoys playing the victim, thinking that if he makes others feel pity for him, he will gain their sympathy and respect. A quitter is usually without achievements or successes, because he thinks too much about the things that might get in his way rather than focusing on finding solutions out of the box. A defeatist meets the desires of others, even if they are at the expense of his own desires, as he seeks to provide assistance to everyone, whether he is close to him or a stranger. The person with a defeatist personality is the most tolerant group of people and the ability to understand their circumstances. He is a trustworthy person with no ulterior motives, and an innocence and naivety akin to that of children. A quitter never takes any risks, either with work or entering into new relationships, out of fear of failure. Causes of defeatist personality There are two main factors that directly affect the formation of the defeatist personality, one of which finds a way for the individual at an early age, and the other is an indirect result of the person's mastery of the first factor, and in the following we will review the two factors. Parental control Usually parents want absolute control over their children, for the purpose of preserving and guiding them, but this does not always yield positive results, because this parental control may completely contradict the child’s desires, and here the child finds himself in front of a scenario of two available, either bowing to the orders of the family , or objection that may render him vulnerable to insult and humiliation. Mostly, the child acquiesces, and gives up his right to express his opinion and form his own dreams, and with the passage of time a defeatist personality forms inside him, does not trust his abilities, cannot decide his own destiny, and remains subordinate to the whims of others against his will, and eventually the child turns into an adult but with A distorted personality, he believes that he can only protect himself by playing the role of the victim, because he sees in him the best solution to get away from the injustice and cunning that he may be exposed to from others. Linear thinking Open-minded thinking is one of the basics of social interactions. It gives the individual a lot of life experiences, and makes him more receptive to the changes that occur in his life, and more able to adapt to what is available, in order to prove himself, whatever the circumstances. On the contrary, the defeatist has a personality that tends to think in a linear way, with a limited horizon, who adopts the policy of the one option, where the person assumes that there are no multiple solutions to a problem, and thus loses his ability to look at things from the perspective of the other, so he becomes discouraged, and turns into a traditional routine person, who cannot Dealing with life changes. How to deal with a defeatist personality Without a doubt, dealing with the owner of a defeatist personality is the most stressful thing for those around him, which can negatively affect those around him, so after identifying his motives and before we address the ideal treatment methods for these symptoms, we must realize that it is possible to deal With him according to a specific policy, may limit his feeling of defeatism. Encourage the quitter to think carefully before making a decision, and remind him or her that every decision has positives that roughly equal the negatives. Stay away as much as possible from directing any verbal or moral abuse to him, because this stimulates his desire to play the role of the victim. Helping him review the wrong experiences and decisions he made in the past, and clarify the areas of error and push him to avoid them in the future, by clarifying a successful alternative to them. Preventing him from self-flagellation, by directing him in clear terms that give him confidence in himself, and the desire to achieve success, or at least avoid past mistakes. A defeatist should be advised that he should bear the consequences of his decisions only, without having to bear the burdens of others.
  6. News The Khalifa University of Science and Technology in the UAE announced that researchers from the Environmental and Geophysical Sciences Laboratory have used remote sensing techniques in satellites to detect any buried objects in archaeological sites and identify sites that have not yet been discovered in the country. This achievement was made by utilizing machine learning techniques in the field of satellite data, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM). The new method, which combines satellite data and machine learning, was developed at Khalifa University and can be applied in all desert environments inside and outside the country. Through this technology, researchers were able to find a new archaeological area that has not yet been discovered by traditional methods, which is an area buried underground, and the Environmental and Geophysical Sciences Laboratory at Khalifa University is currently exploring another archaeological site near the city of Al Ain. The results of the research project, which was supervised by the head of the Environmental and Geophysical Sciences Laboratory, Dr. Diana Francis, showed that radar imaging allows direct detection and identification of the characteristics of buried objects. As well as the possibility of new archaeological sites, where researchers use the radar aperture of the lens carried by satellites with high accuracy, which helps to discover features the size of one meter in a depth of up to two meters in the ground, under ideal conditions, meaning that the soil is dry and bare such Soil of Saruq Al Hadid site. Related news The UAE satellite "DhabiSat" reaches its orbital position The Environmental and Geophysical Sciences Laboratory was able to access potential areas with the aim of further studies at the sites based on the machine learning techniques and deep learning analyzes conducted during this project. This technology contributes to reducing the cost of archaeological excavations and enhancing the role of archaeologists in effectively identifying potential archaeological sites. It also contributes to creating a model that is increasingly accurate over time due to its ability to learn and benefit from knowledge. Executive Vice President at Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Dr. Arif Al Hammadi, said: “Khalifa University researchers focus their efforts on areas related not only to science, engineering, technology and healthcare, but they are also able to employ remote sensing in archaeology to uncover historical and cultural archaeological sites in UAE". He continued, "In this context, the Environmental and Geophysical Sciences Laboratory at Khalifa University is using remote sensing technology and developing a specialized application to monitor impacts that can be used in similar desert environments wherever they are found in the world." For her part, Francis said that remote sensing "has contributed to supporting research related to archeology in various ways in recent years, represented in the detection of artifacts under the surface of the earth, and the monitoring and study of archaeological sites and monuments." "Smart systems and machine learning technologies used in remote sensing can also provide important additional support and guidance needed to advance archaeological research at sites," she added. The archaeological site of Saruq Al-Hadid was chosen for the first study to be conducted by researchers from the Environmental and Geophysical Sciences Laboratory, a site previously researched by a team from Dubai Municipality along with the MBRSC laboratory. Their studies indicated the existence of settlements buried in the place related to the indigenous people in ancient times.

  10. When Michael Sappir moved to Leipzig, Germany, in 2019, he knew he wanted to get involved in the local left-wing scene. But as a Jewish Israeli who spent years taking part in activism against the Israeli occupation back home, he was surprised to that being a leftist in Germany often meant giving fealty to the State of Israel and contributing to vicious attacks on supporters of the Palestinian . Those attacks in the city, he says, had mostly come from associated with or inspired by “Antideutsch,” a movement which has historically been part of Germany’s radical left yet which unconditionally sides with Israel. For Sappir, the dissonance between the German left’s purported values and their skewed stance on Palestinian rights needed to be addressed. That is why Sappir, a writer who is pursuing his degree in philosophy and has contributed to +972 Magazine, helped establish a new network of left-wing Israeli Jews in Germany called “Jewish Israeli Dissent in Leipzig – JID,” which provides a space for Jewish to show solidarity with Palestinians to challenge Germany's unquestioning support for Israel. donate now I spoke to Sappir once before the violence that erupted in Israel-Palestine in May, and again a month after, about the founding of JID, the pernicious influence of Antideustch, Germany’s muzzling of Palestine activism, and organizing alongside Palestinians in Leipzig. Israeli activist and JID founder Michael Sappir. (Courtesy of Michael Sappir) Israeli activist and JID founder Michael Sappir. (Courtesy of Michael Sappir) This interview has been edited for length and clarity. Who started the Jewish Israeli Dissent in Leipzig activist network? I formed the group with a few other Jewish Israelis, most of whom were politically active in Israel. It started last summer after an incident with the local project of a feminist collective, where one floor of the building [where they are headquartered] is meant for BIPOC and migrant women and the other floor is for everybody — mainly white Germans. Basically, a Syrian woman refugee was accused of antisemitism because she was critical of Israel. There was a big drama, which included threatening behavior against her. It ended with a lot of the migrant women leaving. The pro-Israel side got its way and scared away the people who wanted to speak up about this. There was a decision in the house not to talk about Israel and antisemitism. Some of us heard about this and were horrified. So, in July 2020, we decided to organize an evening called “Ask us Anything.” It was organized especially for Germans to hear the perspective of the Israeli left. We then decided that we needed something to be ongoing, including a website and a name that we could put out responses to things happening in the city. How many members are in your network? Can anyone join? We are currently six members. The network is open to anyone who grew up in Israel and agrees with our principles. In Israeli terms, it means a left perspective that is comfortable with looking critically at Israeli history. If new members want to join, they can't say that everything was good up until 1967 [the beginning of Israel's occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Golan Heights]. We are very critical about what happened before that. Choosing the name "JID" sounds like a re-claiming of the word "Yid," a historically offensive nickname for Jews in East Europe and Russia. We had a lot of discussion about this. Yes, it was an intentional reclaiming, but we realize that actually a few different interpretations have come up with the term. There is the Eastern European word "yid" — which in some countries is a neutral way of saying "Jew" and in other countries is an antisemitic slur — which we did not have in mind. In English-speaking countries where Yiddish speakers arrived, they called themselves “yid,” but that would also [later] become a pejorative term for Jews. In Germany itself, Yiddish speakers referred to themselves as “yid,” yet German today have never heard that term before speakers. We decided that we are okay with reclaiming it. What are the main goals of the organization? We are trying to open up space for voices like ours and people like us, and especially for Palestinians, because we see that there is very little space to talk about these issues from a critical perspective. It is also a matter of empowering ourselves and others, because the left in Leipzig is [associated with] the Antideutsch movement. It can be very isolating. When I came here, I wanted very much to be involved [with the left] but couldn't because there were too many Israeli flags. What is Antideutsch? Antideutsch is a movement that comes out of the German radical left that is focused on unconditional support for Israel. In Leipzig they are kind of fanatics. Some of them aren't even involved in the left anymore. Most of them are seen as part of Antifa. And just as Antifa opposes Nazis, Antideutsch-Antifa tries to use the same tactics against anyone who they see as questioning Israel. Protester holds an Israeli flag at an Antidutsche demonstration in Germany. (Fatelessfear/Wikimedia/CC-BY-SA-3.0) Protester holds an Israeli flag at an Antidutsche demonstration in Germany. (Fatelessfear/Wikimedia/CC-BY-SA-3.0) Antideutsch-dominated antifascist groups oppose Palestinian solidarity in the same way they would oppose neo-Nazis: they document everything they do, sometimes threatening them individually, trying to block demonstrations, mobilizing leftists for counter-demonstrations. They spend a lot of time making accusations against solidarity online and “explaining” [often with hasbara talking points] why this or that person or group is a dangerous antisemite. Are they affiliated with any party? There are Antideutsch tendencies in all parts of the left — it is not limited to any party or movement. Actually, very few people today consider themselves Antideutsch: some call themselves “ideologiekritsch” [critical of ideology], and there are even more who are influenced by their ideas but not explicitly part of their movement. How do non-Zionist Israelis and Palestinians in Leipzig deal with them? In Leipzig, Palestinians and people in solidarity with them have had a hard time even protesting in public. Antideutsch groups have managed to bully them into silence. But now there is a feeling that they are losing their strength, and the demonstrations during the recent escalations in Israel-Palestine really made this clear — the Palestinian demo was twice as big and much more energetic than the pro-Israel counter-demonstration. In JID, we are trying to be part of this change by making our critical Israeli perspective public, and by making it clear that these “pro-Israel” people do not speak for us, and we do not accept what they say about our home country. How have things in Leipzig changed since the escalation in Gaza? We very quickly started to become active in May. First, we made a solidarity statement (in German and in English) about the situation. We immediately noticed that it was being sent around in activist circles and on social media in Leipzig. People discussed it — not only positively, we also got a lot of negative reactions from Antideutsch located. But what was important was that it was being talked about.
  11. BOGOTA, July 26 (Reuters) - More than 1,900 turtles, reptiles and amphibians were released into lagoons and forests in Colombia's Meta province over the weekend after being seized and rehabilitated by authorities fighting wildlife trafficking, officials said. Most of the animals - 1,917 - are matamata turtles, known for their impressive ridged shells. The turtles were seized in an April operation by Bogota's city environment office and the environmental police at the cargo terminal of El Dorado airport, the environment office said in a statement. Also released were 27 turtles from two other species, 15 iguanas, a zopilote snake and multiple frogs and toads. All of them were also seized in anti-trafficking operations. "We have freed 1,960 specimens of wild Colombian fauna," said Camilo Rincon, the head of environmental control at Bogota's environmental office. "With the help of our veterinarians we have rehabilitated and recovered these specimens so they can be liberated in their natural habitat, which corresponds to four civil reserves located in the province of Meta," he said. Genetic testing showed the animals came originally from Meta, the statement said. The large province is located south of Bogota and encompasses both wide plains and jungle. Between June 2020 and June 2021, 3,835 animals were seized by the environment office and the police. Some 3,222 of those have so far been placed back into their natural habitats. The last of them is Karim Bousalem.. Corona kidnaps 5 journalists in Algeria within a month The statement indicated that "once again, some measures, including raising the call to prayer and attaching it to the formula (pray in your homes), with another decision included canceling Quranic lessons and religious lectures, with the closure of the branches of the Islamic Cultural Center in the 35 states, including the capital." And on Sunday, the Algerian authorities announced that they had taken urgent measures to confront the outbreak of the "Delta" mutator, which is terribly exported in the country. The Algerian Cabinet, headed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, issued 9 new decisions to contain the terrible outbreak of the Corona virus in Algeria. And it was decided to return to the quarantine system, starting from 20.00 pm (23.00 Abu Dhabi time) to 6.00 am in the most affected states, which numbered 35 out of 58 governorates. The Algerian president ordered to raise the vaccination rate more in the states with large po[CENSORED]tion density, as they are the first states for the sources of infection. 18. LANSING, Iowa — A hard-ware store in downtown Lansing has survived for more than 120 years by adapting to the times, say Dave and Laurie Janzen, who have owned the business since 2013. Eight years ago, the Janzens bought Bartels Hardware & Service Inc. at 238 Main St. and renamed it Lansing Hardware & Service. They are the business from Bill and Susan Bartels, who had purchased owned the store since 1985. It had been in the same family since Bill Bartels' grandfather, Al Kehr, and Al's brother, Bill Kehr, bought it in 1920. The original hardware store building at 238 Main St. was built in 1900, Dave Janzen said. The business grew over the years and today occupies five connecting storefronts. The buildings have their original hardwood floors and tin ceilings. The Janzens, who are natives of South Dakota, moved to the area in 2003 to join the staff of the Village Creek Bible Camp near Lansing. Dave Janzen was the camp's associate director and Laurie worked there part time, before they bought the hardware store. "We were looking for a change," Dave said of the couple's decision to buy the hardware store. "We bought a house in the city (in 2012) and the day we closed our house we heard a hardware store was for sale." Al Tens has made some changes to the business since its purchase. “Probably the biggest was the computerization of store inventory and that kind of thing,” Dave said. "And computerizing the paint department," Laurie added. "We have the ability to scan the color if someone brings it to us, so we can match it." The Janzens have also lowered prices to be more competitive with online retailers. "With the world of Google, you can't be overkill," Lowry said. Recently, Lansing hardware store survived the coronavirus pandemic. "In the pandemic, we've done well, as have most hardware stores," Dave said. “Because everyone was home and you had a lot of repair projects in the house. We didn't have to shut down. We made some changes to the way we did business. We had a lot of deliveries, a lot of servicing on the curb. And some of that is going on.” "Because there are people who need it all the time," Lowry added. Looking to the future, the family of dozens wants to update the storefront in the near future. "We'll keep the historic look," Dave said. Dave said the hardware store has withstood more than a century "by adapting to the needs of society." "And try to keep up with what is needed." The company, which is part of the retailer-owned cooperative bearing the Hardware Hank brand, sells a large variety of hardware, paint, household and plumbing goods, electrical supplies, gifts, and hardware. They also provide hardware, installation, repair and service. "Devices are probably our biggest category" in total sales, Dave said. “Paint is probably second. Plumbing, lawn and lawn are probably tied up in third.” The Janzens quit selling antiques at the store about 1½ years ago. “It was getting harder and harder to be able to get and sell antiques at a profit,” Dave said. “And the amount of time and effort it took wasn’t commensurate with the compensation we were getting from it.” The store's busiest months are May and June, Dave said. “That’s when a lot of the seasonal people, the cabin people, are coming back and opening up cabins. That's the biggest time for lawn and garden stuff.” The slowest time of year is January and February, Dave said. The Janzens work at the store full time and have five part-time employees. Dave said he and his wife most enjoy interacting with their customers. “We just love the people,” he said, adding that most customers live within 20 miles of Lansing. “The atmosphere in small towns is just so different. You know most of the customers by name. And even if you don’t know their names, they’re willing to share their stories.”
