  1. Following a report back in May detailing specs for Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 VR headset, a fresh report has appeared that echoes a few of these claims and asserts some new information too, including additional hardware info and the revelation that Sony is allegedly focusing on bringing both console-quality AAA games and hybrid flatscreen/VR titles to the PS5 platform. Many of the specs listed below were subject of the reports made in both May (UploadVR) and June (Bloomberg). Road to VR was not able to independently any of these claims, so take them with a grain of salt. Here's a recap of what we've heard so far, and then what's presented in the new report. The next-gen PSVR is said to include: 4.1MP (2,000 x 2,040) per-eye resolution OLED IPD adjustment dial Eye-tracking capable of foveated rendering USB-C tether to PS5 Inside-out tracking Head-mounted haptics Holiday 2022 release date A new report by YouTube channel PSVR without Parole maintains the headset is internally called 'Next Gen VR', or NGVR for short. This, along with the following information, was supposedly released yesterday at a virtual summit for prospective game developers. The headset's display is said to be an HDR-capable OLED, and offer a 110-degree FOV, which is slightly larger than the original's 100-degree FOV. Lenses are said to be of a fresnel design, which may reduce the weight of the headset over the original PSVR's conventional plano-convex lenses. In addition to eye-tracking and foveated rendering, Sony is supposedly implementing something called “flexible scale rendering” (FSR) on PS5 for its next-gen headset. It sounds similar to Oculus' fixed foveated rendering (FFR) technique, which automatically adjusts the level of eye texture foveation based on GPU utilization. The report claims the next-gen PSVR will be bundled with its still-unnamed controllers, which were publicly revealed back in March. Sony says the controllers include the same adaptive triggers as the PS5 DualSense controller, however the report adds that they will include capacitive touch sensors as well, which are placed accordingly to detect the position of the thumb, index, and middle finger. Sony's closed-door conference was said to feature a call to action to move away from VR experiences, and focus more on console-quality AAA games. This includes VR-compatible hybrid games which are designed for dual use on traditional flatscreens and the VR headset, for example Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, Dreams, and No Man's Sky. Sony is allegedly going to make it possible to download whichever version of the game you want so users can save on bandwidth and local storage. It's claimed that the developers behind original PSVR games will be incentivized to remaster games for the new headset, however no mention was made of backwards compatibility
  2. Last month, billionaires Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson captured the world's gaze by each flying to space on spacecraft they'd funded themselves. Both of these historic launches have helped bring to reality the space tourism industry, with hundreds of tickets buyers expected to make their own journeys in the coming years. But while billionaires may capture public attention, the real story of the past decade of the space industry lies not in astronauts but in satellites—and the data they're capable of providing to a wide swathe of industries. In 2020, remote sensing satellite owners and manufacturers pulled in nearly $4 billion in revenue, according to a report from Bryce Tech. These satellites constitute about 17% of the total number of satellites in orbit (communications makes up the bulk), and several of the startups that provide this technology have announced plans to go public this year. “What was previously a very high barrier of entry ecosystem has shifted tremendously over the last couple of years,” says Brady Brim-DeForest. “The cost of launch on a per-pound basis has decreased tremendously and the miniaturization of satellites, of cubesats and microsats, the capabilities they offer now compared to even three or four years ago is mind-blowing.” Brim-DeForest, 37, sees an opportunity in that lowered barrier of entry. That's why his Los Angeles-based software company, Theorem LLC, announced Tuesday that it's launching a new business unit, Theorem Orbital, geared toward providing custom software solutions for its customers that make use of the new data on offer to improve their businesses and cut costs. “We see space as a major driver of disruption,” Brim-DeForest says. “But in order for our clients to compete, they need help navigating it.”

  5. "Transforming the UK's approach" to repair, reuse, recycling and remanufacture could create more than 450,000 jobs across the country by 2035, according to a report published today (4 August) by the Green Alliance. The environmental think tank and charity found that “transforming the UK’s circular economy” could see the creation of more than 300,000 new jobs in remanufacturing and 30,000 in repair work within the next 15 years. A third of the projected total jobs would be in “lower skilled occupations” that currently see higher unemployment rates, while the Green Alliance says positions in skilled trades and administrative and procurement roles would also “benefit”. However, the research found that creating “lots of jobs” “more evenly” across the UK relied on “government ambition”. The Green Alliance projects that if the UK's circular economy continues to develop at the existing rate, which assumes “little progress on the status quo”, only 40,000 new jobs will be created across the country by 2035. The Green Alliance urged the Treasury and chancellor Rishi Sunak to bring in a series of new policies to "transform the circular economy" and create jobs across the UK. Zoe Avison, policy analyst at the Green Alliance, said: “A big program to avoid unnecessary waste and reclaim the value of materials would not only help consumers but create jobs in communities across the country. “This is a great opportunity for the chancellor to show his commitment to expanding innovation, and for the government to show the meaning of leveling up.” 'Leveling up' The Green Alliance suggests the circular economy could create additional jobs and reduce overall unemployment in regions with higher unemployment, such as the North East. The think tank claims boosting the circular economy would therefore support the government's 'levelling up' vision. s The policies the Green Alliance wants the Treasury to introduce include halving UK resource use by 2050. Binding interim targets would ensure that businesses act quickly, and that the UK gains a "competitive edge" in circular economy technology and techniques, the Green Alliance says. The Green Alliance wants to increase consumer demand by zero rating VAT on repairs and refurbishment (picture: Shutterstock) The think tank says the government could “close the information gap” by providing a central materials datahub for businesses along the circular economy value chain. It also wants the Treasury to dedicate seed finance in the form of a £400 million starter fund for trial initiatives to prove the potential of a more circular economy to cut carbon and create jobs. The think tank wants to increase consumer demand by zero rating VAT on repairs and refurbishment. Currently, VAT is charged at the standard rate of 20% for repairs. The Green Alliance claims that, when added to labor costs, this often makes buying new items cheaper than repairing them. And, the Green Alliance wants the Treasury to support workers to move into the circular economy through retraining programs and career coaching. This would include supporting workers transitioning from “declining industries” and providing strategic funding to universities and colleges. Report Today’s report is an update of a similar document from January 2015, when Green Alliance worked with the charity WRAP to produce ‘Employment and the circular economy: job creation in a more resource efficient Britain’ (see letsrecycle.com story). The job projects are based on analysis that takes the current number of jobs in circular economy activities across British regions and inflates them in line with different growth scenarios, assuming the relationship between the size of the particular market and the number of jobs remains constant. The Green Alliance says figures have been adjusted “where appropriate” to subtract jobs that are likely to be lost as a result of a more circular economy. These are said to be mainly in material extraction and waste disposal.
  6. On June 3, 4-year-old Adda Mudasir was playing with her toys a few feet away from her brother and grandfather on the lawn of her home in Ompora village in India-administered Kashmir. By the time her family heard the screams it was too late. A leopard had attacked the girl and dragged her away, leaving only her toys and shoes on the lawn. Her remains were found a day later hundreds of meters away near a nursery. "I am horrified. In a few seconds, a leopard came and snatched all the happiness from my family. We were preparing to celebrate my son's sixth birthday and she had brought him a cake and some gifts," Mudasir's father told DW. "It was a murder because the government ignored our multiple alerts about the presence of leopards in the area," he added. At least 196 people have been killed, and 2,325 injured, by wild animals since 2011 in India-administered Kashmir. In the first six months of this year, at least 10 people have been killed and over 150 injured. "This year we saw an abrupt increase in incidents of human-animal conflicts. We are receiving scores of panic calls from people about the presence of wild animals in their residential areas," said a senior wildlife official in Kashmir, Ifshan Dewan. "We have captured six leopards in the past four months from the Ompora area alone," he told DW. Increased development encrusting on habitats The shrinking buffer zone between forests and human settlements is a major factor in wild animals foraying into po[CENSORED]ted areas. Although this problem has been raised by locals in the past, authorities have yet to intervene substantially. Forests cover around 20% of Kashmir's geographical area, with protected areas of 15,900 square kilometers (6,100 square miles), comprising five national parks, 14 wildlife sanctuaries and 35 conservation reserves. Experts say the change in land use patterns, deforestation, development projects coming up near and into forests has led to higher incidences of human-animal conflict in the region. Himalayan black bears and leopards have become a common sight in new residential developments, which have been built next to forests and conservation areas. The wild animals have even been recently spotted in busy markets of the region's main city, Srinagar, and were also found in high-security zones like the residence of former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Development with disregard Wildlife experts say in the past three decades, Kashmir has seen a drastic change in land-use patterns, with a complete disregard for habitat habitats and ecologically sensitive zones. ll. The last three decades of armed conflict provided cover to all subversions and violations in the name of development committed by both government and private individuals,” said Sabreena Nazir, a wildlife scholar at Sher-i-Kashmir University Agriculture Sciences and Technology in Srinagar. "These development projects have immensely disturbed the habitat habitat," she added. "The buffer between forests and human habitation has vanished due to expanding apple orchards. Fruits, particularly apples, are one of the most attractive pursuits for a black bear," she said. Man vs. beast In the lush hamlet of Takiya Yousuf Shah, located in the foothills of Pir Panjal forest range in Wagoora in Kashmir's northwest, residents say they have no choice but to kill the wild animals stalking their land. "Our cattle and sheep are not safe from them. Wild animals frequently come into our village. Last year, a leopard took our dog," said local woman Jabeena Shah. Nazir said most incidents of human-animal conflict have been recorded in orchards and human settlements, which have come up against buffer zones. Official figures show that at least 50 animals, mostly bears and leopards, have been killed in the past year. Several incidents of violent mobs chasing and pelting rocks at wild animals have also been reported. "The attacks carried out by mobs on animals are lethal or cause permanent disfigurement. Every month, we see one or two cases where wild animals, mostly bears and leopards, have received fatal head injuries in mob attacks," said veterinarian Umer Zahid at Dachigam National Park. Kashmir's militarization plays a role Kashmir is one of the world's most militarized areas, with armed security forces present in wildlife sanctuaries and forests in border areas. Armed forces are also rearing dogs in their camps, and food waste littered around attracts stray dogs — a favorite prey for leopards — from adjoining villages. "We have asked the army authorities to install trash bins, as the food waste attracts dogs, which become a target for leopards," Dewan said.
  7. The Japanese company, Toyota, announced its official decision to discontinue the Avalon model in one of the world's famous markets, due to the decline in sedan sales there. Toyota revealed that it decided to stop the Avalon model in the US market, which focuses mostly on SUV, pickup and crossover models. Toyota has notified all its suppliers in the United States to stop production of the Avalon model at the company's plant in Kentucky after the completion of production scheduled for 2022. Toyota was forced to confirm the news after it spread in the American media, which made the company prefer to issue an official statement to announce the matter. In the same context, Toyota confirmed that it is continuing to produce the Avalon model in the Chinese market, which is the largest in the world, which means that the company is still convinced of this model, but it made this decision after looking at the marketing aspect. Experts consider the news of stopping Avalon production in the United States as logical, after its sales declined since 2019. Toyota Avalon sales in 2019 recorded 27,767 copies sold, a decrease of 16.3% compared to 2018. 8. Ketogenic diets or ketogenic diets may be very trendy at the moment, and many people around the world follow them, but a new study revealed a surprise for followers of this type of diet or those who are thinking of following it. The study warned that the keto diet "may cause long-term damage to health." The researchers said that these high-fat diets are different from other weight-loss regimens, but they "increase the risk of many different diseases, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and even Alzheimer's disease." "The keto diet - which is based on a weight loss plan that avoids carbohydrates, while relying on eating protein - may promote various diseases (...)," said study author Lee Crosby at New York University's Grossman School of Medicine. Eating red meat, processed meat, and saturated fats, and limiting the intake of carbohydrates rich vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains, was considered a bad recipe for health.” Crosby and the research team behind the study conducted a more comprehensive review of the keto diet, the results of which were published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, and showed that "the keto diet poses a particular risk to pregnant women." The study found that "low-carb diets are associated with a higher risk of neural tube defects in the baby, even if the mother took folic acid during pregnancy." Kidney failure High-protein ketogenic diets can also, according to the study, lead to an acceleration of kidney failure in patients with kidney disease. It also raises "bad cholesterol" levels. The researchers note that the keto diet is often seen as a potential treatment for heart disease and even cancer. However, while some studies have found that this diet may starve cancer cells, they found that "restricting carbohydrates actually makes a person lean toward more cancer-causing foods." In addition to the significant risks to kidney patients and pregnant women, the keto diet is also risky for others, as these diets can increase levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, Crosby explains. ) and may increase the risk of chronic diseases in general (..)”, noting that “while this diet can reduce body weight in the short term, this approach is no more effective than other diets for weight loss.” Interestingly, the study authors also found that the keto diet may reduce seizure frequency in some patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. Related news The keto diet “shortenes life” .. a study reveals the great delusion Nuts and weight loss .. the "certain" truth Restrictions on carbohydrates According to the study, "Severe restrictions on carbohydrates can significantly affect diet quality, usually reducing or eliminating fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, while increasing consumption of animal products." Low-carb diets may lack the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low-carb diets are often low in thiamin (vitamin B1), folate, vitamin A, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, iron and potassium. In the absence of vitamin supplements, individuals who follow a low-carbohydrate diet are at risk of overt nutritional deficiency.
  9. https://www.msn.com/ar-ae/news/featured/مصابو-انفجار-مرفأ-بيروت-يرفعون-شعار-أمس-لا-يشبه-اليوم/ar-AAMW0uH In this way, the shrapnel of the explosion affected thousands of innocent people, some of whom were able to heal their physical wounds, and some of them bear the effects of the Nakba as long as they are alive. Rather, some of them are still in a coma and were not able to wake up from the horror of the catastrophe and return to life again. The common denominator among all is that the deep pain will remain in their hearts forever. Muhammad al-Daqduqi had to bear the Nakba of Beirut in his eyes and his prosthetic limb, and he was the one whom death passed before him while he was at the port working in those fateful moments. The son of the town of Barja and the father of 3 sons, thanked the Emirates Red Crescent Authority, which sponsored his treatment and the installation of an artificial eye for him and an artificial limb in implementation of the initiative of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, President of the General Women’s Union, Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, Honorary President of the Emirates Red Crescent Authority "Mother of the Emirates," and he said: "May God give her long life, I will not forget her help and standing by my side." Muhammad al-Daqduqi worked for 14 years in Ajman, and a year before the explosion he came to Lebanon. He worked in the port of Beirut as a truck driver, and everything in his life was turned upside down. He said, "I can no longer work to provide for my children, who were shocked when they saw me in this condition. The explosion took pleasure in tattooing the scars on my body." Regarding his opinion on the progress of the investigations, he said: "The officials do not want to reveal the truth, because they are all involved." There are many aspects of injury and suffering. The young woman, Lara Hayek, 43, has been in a coma since that bloody day. Her mother, Najwa, expressed in an interview with “Al-Ain News” her deep sadness over the pleasure of her liver, which was, as she said, “like a rose whose fragrance reeks wherever it is found. It dries up before my eyes and I can do nothing about it." Najwa explained how her daughter was injured in her home in Ashrafieh, saying: "The door flew and hit her head. The blow was very strong on her brain, which further damaged it. Her heartbeat stopped for a while. She was transferred to the American University Hospital and from there to the Bahnas Hospital, which is still lying on her bed." Doctors diagnosed Lara’s coma with veganism, that is, when the patient is, as Najwa said, “eyes open without seeing anything. from an infection in her lungs. She added: "My heart cries every moment over her. I am in pain and oppressed. Isn't it forbidden what happened to her, and with this state it does not take care of her treatment, but I still hope that the conscience of officials will wake up and continue to treat patients," adding: "Fear heavenly justice." As for Joseph Ghafari, he paid a piece of his body for the explosion of the port, and according to what he told Al-Ain News: “When the explosion rang out, I was playing sports on Al-Azariyeh Street in Ashrafieh. I was shocked when I heard my friend screaming, asking me to see what happened to my leg. He added, "What I saw is beyond words. I lay on the ground for about 50 minutes, bleeding before I was taken to the hospital." Joseph (57 years old) stressed the difficulty of the stage he went through, and said: "I was tormented a lot. The prosthesis was delayed for 10 months due to the infections that I suffered after the operation," noting that "the state sponsored the operations, but the rest of the treatment and examinations are for the patients."
  10. Despite working remotely and the hybrid models adopted by many high-tech companies, electrical and computer engineers working in Tel Aviv earn thousands of shekels per month more than their counterparts in the north and south of Israel, with the gap widening as seniority grows. That is according to a survey of 619 electrical and computer engineers. The average monthly salary in Israel for electrical and computer engineers is NIS 24,200 (about $7,500), while naturally, salaries go up with seniority. While the average salary for engineers with up to one year of experience is NIS 22,000 (about $6,750) per month, after three to five years of work the salary increases by 20% and stands at NIS 26,600 ($8,000) per month on average. Senior engineers with six years of experience or more earn an average of NIS 31,000 a month (more than $9,500). The starting monthly salary of software engineers is NIS 17,000 (about $5,200) on average, significantly lower than that of juniors in the field of image and sound processing - NIS 27,000 a month on average ($8,300). Real-Time and Embedded engineers with zero to one year of experience earn an average of NIS 19,000 a month (more than $5,800), while hardware engineers start with an average salary of NIS 22,500 (just below $7,000). The data was collected and processed by Roi Antman, an engineer at Nvidia who has a bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering from Ben Gurion University and is the manager of the Facebook group "Electrical & Computer Engineering Jobs Israel" that has 4,500 members, engineers and students for electrical and computer engineering. It shows that signal processing, and in particular image and sound processing, algorithmics, VLSI and chip design are the highest-paid sub-sectors. The results of the survey also show the growth of the chip industry in Israel in recent years, with 42% of the respondents working directly in the world of hardware and chips. In general, in the north and south of Israel, engineers earn less than in the center of the country. Electrical engineers who work in the Tel Aviv area earn an average of NIS 25,600 a month (about $7,900) and they lead the salary ranking at every level of education. Holders of a bachelor's degree in Tel Aviv earn about NIS 24,000 a month (about $7,400), and holders of advanced degrees earn an average of NIS 32,400 (close to $10,000). On the other hand, undergraduate engineers who work in the northern region earn NIS 24,000 a month (about $7,400), while those with advanced degrees earn NIS 26,750 a month (more than $8,200). In the south, those with a bachelor's degree will earn NIS 20,200 ($6,200), while their more experienced colleagues will earn NIS 27,000 a month ($8,300). Another factor that affects the salary is where an engineer graduated from. Leading the salary table are Technion graduates with an average of NIS 26,500 (about $8,150) per month, followed immediately by Tel Aviv University alumni with an average of NIS 26,000 ($8,000) per month. Ben Gurion University graduates are in the third place with an average salary of NIS 23,600 per month ($7,250). Related articles: Rising tech salaries and exchange rate pushing multinationals to reconsider Israeli R&D Crazy competition for tech talent will come at a steep cost Data scientists’ salaries reach crazy highs as the war for tech talent escalates When it comes to student positions, the Technion continues to lead, with its students earning an average of NIS 86 ($26.5) per hour. Their colleagues at Tel Aviv University earn NIS 80 ($24.5) per hour in a student position, while students from HIT College earn an average of NIS 64 ($19.5) per hour. The survey also examined how electrical engineers are hired. 32.5% said that they were referred by a friend. 13.6% said advertising on LinkedIn, 13.4% the mentioned employment fairs, while Facebook posts and recruiting agencies got 9%.
  11. A new nonprofit organization seeks to make sustainability as much a priority for software development teams as performance, security, cost and accessibility. The Green Software Foundation, which debuted in late May, is backed by tech giants including Accenture, GitHub, Microsoft and Thoughtworks, as well as the Linux Foundation and the Joint Development Foundation. In addition to reducing the carbon emissions of software, the Green Software Foundation looks to promote industry standards for green software engineering. “Stakeholders are demanding more environmental and socially responsible behavior, which provides organizations with the opportunity to demonstrate that they are purposeful about sustainability, hold strong ethical and operate responsibly in everything they do,” said Sanjay Podder, technology sustainability lead at Accenture and board member of the Green Software Foundation. "Energy is one of the most significant drivers of carbon emissions for software applications -- particularly for machine learning applications," Podder said. The Green Software Foundation's strategy In March 2020, the International Telecommunication Union, Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative, GSMA and the Science Based Targets Initiative set a goal for the information and communications technology sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% before 2030, in line with the Paris Agreement. To help reach that goal, the Green Software Foundation has stated the following plans: Establish green software standards The foundation will develop a standard method to calculate and report the carbon intensities of software applications. The method will measure the carbon emissions produced by an application per unit of work. The measurement will be standardized to provide consistency throughout the industry. In addition, the foundation will issue green software engineering standards, patterns and practices across various computing disciplines and technology domains, according to Accenture. The foundation will encourage software development teams to adopt the standards. It will also look to influence government policy related to green software emissions. Energy is one of the most significant drivers of carbon emissions for software applications -- particularly for machine learning applications. Sanjay Podder Technology sustainability innovation lead, Accenture Accelerate innovation The foundation will support open source and open-data projects that promote green software engineering practices. 13. NEW YORK — How much slack is there in the US economy? In economics, the “gap version” of Okun’s law holds that a one-percentage-point increase in the unemployment rate is associated with a two-point decline in the real (inflation-adjusted) GDP growth rate below its potential. The gap matters, because the closer the economy is to its potential, the more we should worry about inflation. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the US unemployment rate was 5.9 per cent in June, compared to the pre-pandemic (February 2020) rate of 3.5 per cent. If we take the latter figure as an estimate of the natural unemployment rate, we get an output gap of 4.8 per cent. Assuming potential output grows at an annual rate of 2 per cent, non-inflationary real GDP growth for the coming year would hit 6.8 per cent. Since the US Federal Reserve expects 7 per cent growth this year and 3.3 per cent growth in 2022, that would suggest the US is still at least a couple of years away from the inflation threshold. This guesstimate of the output gap can be criticised as either too low or too high. The too-low camp argues that the official unemployment numbers — 9.5 million in June 2021, as against 5.7 million in February 2020 — underestimate the amount of slack in the labour market. The BLS reports that in June, “the number of persons not in the labour force who currently want a job was 6.4 million”, an increase of “1.4 million since February 2020”. After accounting for those additional 1.4 million, the unemployment rate rises to 6.8 per cent, yielding an output gap of 6.6 per cent. Moreover, the number of people employed part-time for economic reasons has grown by 229,000 since February 2020. Treating this category as unemployed would boost the unemployment rate to 6.9 per cent, and the output gap to 6.8 per cent. The BLS also publishes an estimate of temporarily laid-off workers who should have been classified as unemployed but were misclassified as employed. Counting these would bring the June 2021 seasonally adjusted unemployment rate to 7.1 per cent implying an output gap of 7.2 per cent. But those in the too-high camp insist that there is little or no slack in the economy. They would object to all three of the preceding amendments to the unemployment rate. Why should someone who is not looking for work, or who is unavailable to work, be counted as part of the labor force? Part-timers should be counted as part-time unemployed. And even the BLS, they note, admits that its estimate of “employed” temporarily laid-off workers probably overstates the size of the misclassification error. Moreover, they would contend that the natural rate is probably higher than 3.5 per cent. The key number to consider is unfilled job vacancies. In May 2021, there were 9.2 million (5.7 per cent of the labour force) “Total Nonfarm Job Openings”, which was almost the same as the official number of unemployed people (9.3 million). There also have been consistent reports from around the country of businesses struggling to find workers, suggesting that there is a massive mismatch between labor demand and supply. If the effective supply of labour is materially less than the notional supply, the natural rate of unemployment necessarily rises. Such a massive labour mismatch is certainly plausible, given the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The nature of work changed dramatically as a result of lockdowns and other non-pharmaceutical interventions. In some cases, working from home is not nearly as productive as working in an office, factory, or other non-residential workplace. Even with most official restrictions on employment-relevant activities lifted, concerns about contracting COVID-19 have curtailed the full return to pre-pandemic working arrangements. After all, childcare responsibilities continue to keep many workers (especially women) at home. Given limited daycare capacity, parental labour supply is bound to be impaired. True, assuming the pandemic does not get out of control again, the start of the school year in the fall should bring a steady return to pre-crisis normalcy. But even then, some things will have changed permanently, which means that at least part of the labour mismatch may prove structural in nature. In particular, the rapid adoption of digital technologies — including a veritable information-tech and fintech explosion — is already part of the new normal. Owing to these new capabilities, many jobs, both in manufacturing and in services, will have become redundant. In fact, there is good reason to believe that an automation field day is already underway. While the technological revolution prompted by the pandemic will undoubtedly create new jobs, it has necessarily tended towards labour-saving and labour-replacing innovations. Because the pandemic-driven push towards automation is unprecedented, there is no reliable numerical estimate of its impact on labor markets. My best guess is that it could easily raise the natural
  14. Forest fires engulfing Turkey's southern regions have claimed six human lives since Wednesday, but the number of animals that have perished in five days of wildfires is far higher. Hundreds are estimated to have been killed, with the most consequence being sheep and cows in villages particularly devastated by the blazes. Though some survived, like baby goat “Miracle” who clung to life despite her mother in a fire, others are not as lucky. Vets in Antalya and Adana, where more than 20 fires have disrupted daily life since Wednesday, are rushing to the aid of animals injured by the fires. Though many livestock owners managed to set their animals free from stables and herd them to safety, stray cats and dogs had little chance to flee the raging flames and billowing smoke. Volunteers scoured the fire-hit areas and saved many. Some suffered from burns and others passed out due to dense smoke. In Manavgat, four vets are working day and night both to save animals from the fires and treat them at local clinics. One of them, Sümeyra Hasanoğlu, told Anadolu Agency (AA) Saturday that they were trying to do their best for the animals. Most recently, they treated cats and dogs who survived a fire in Oymapınar neighborhood but sustained burns on their bodies. But they “could not save them all,” she lamented. Some in need of emergency care are treated at fire zones while others are transported to clinics in areas not hit by fires. Hasanoğlu said they also provided free treatment for pets and called upon locals to contact them for treatment. She says their work in Manavgat was quickly noticed and more vets and volunteers are now looking to join them from around Turkey, “from Istanbul to Erzurum.” Volunteers helping local evacuation efforts also play a role in animal rescue. In Manavgat, a puppy saved from the fire quickly found herself a new home in a youth center whose staff had joined the rescue work. Named "Yanık" (Burned), the dog is the center's new mascot. Ekrem Tekin, a volunteer, says they found the dog while trying to save an elderly woman in Gebeci neighborhood. “We grabbed her and took her here to our center. She was very exhausted. We fed her and gave her water. She now appears healthy,” he said. Berkay Köse, a high school student working at the center, said Yanık boosted their morale during the fires. "She was very scared at first and distanced herself. But in time, she grew acccustomed to us. She even plays with the cats we take care of here,” he said. In Adana and Mersin, where the largest fires outside Antalya and Muğla have continued for days since Wednesday, vets organized an animal aid campaign. They collected medicine to treat injured animals, both wildlife and domesticated sheep and cows. In areas near fire-hit districts, volunteers left food for wild animals who lost their pastures in the blazes.

  16. Finding the right shade of foundation for your complexion is a tiring and tiring journey. Once you've found the perfect one for your skin type, type and tone, you'll want to stick with it forever. But the really bad news is that it can actually be difficult to make sure that foundation will work for your skin all year round. Between a summer tan and a lack of vitamin D during the winter, your true skin tone can vary with the season. This means that the shade you use in the summer months may not be suitable for you in February, for example. Of course, the most important thing of all is to take care of your skin and apply high SPF sunscreen all year round, but depending on your tendency to tan then it is normal to have a skin tone that varies with the season. The good news is that you don't have to switch your favorite cream for a different one to suit the season. Makeup experts recommend adjusting the color of your foundation from season to season so that you can stick to your favorite formula and get a face color that matches the color of your neck in winter. Lightening: Mixing a little moisturizer into your foundation is a tried-and-true way to lighten it, but did you also know that it's one of the best ways to lighten the color of your foundation? Mixing a foundation and moisturizer lightens the creamy texture and allows your true skin tone to shine through, as well as adding a dewy finish to your complexion. This method is also ideal when your skin looks a little dry and dull. Mixing a moisturizer with a foundation is an ideal way to incorporate important skincare ingredients into your daily makeup regimen. Experts also advise mixing a moisturizing cream with a sun protection factor during the summer. Adding some moisturizer to your foundation is key to keeping dry skin moisturized in the winter. So make sure that you protect your skin during the summer and keep it moisturized during the winter. Bronzer: The simplest way to adjust the color and tone of your foundation for summer is to apply bronzer in a deep shade that complements your summer skin. But it's important not to get too excited with bronzer. Not only do we advise you to mix the bronzer with foundation and apply it all over the face, but it is better to separate the bronzer so that you can apply it perfectly on the place you want to tan naturally. Whereas bronzer gives you a lot of beauty when applied to the right areas of the face. You can also sometimes skip foundation entirely and accentuate the beauty of your summer skin using bronzer alone. Try applying foundation differently: The only downside to mixing moisturizer and foundation is that you're adding more product to your face. The more layers and products you apply to your face, the higher the risk of your makeup getting smudged and streaked throughout the day, especially when it's hot and humid. Alternatively, you can use another trusted technique to lighten your foundation in order to lighten skin tone. Using a Duo Fiber Brush which is a huge multi-use makeup brush known for its dual fiber bristles, perfect for applying cream or liquid foundation, or using a damp beauty sponge to loosen it instead of mixing more things into it. Contouring Powder: The idea of contouring and highlighting with powder shadows over foundation looks intimidating to beginners, but it is smooth and adds a lot of beauty and definition to your features. It is important to buy shades one or two shades darker and blend the colors well. We also advise you to get the color closest to your skin tone when you find the right foundation for your skin, and to buy shades two shades darker. Thus you will be able to get a great variety of colors when you mix the two so that you can match your skin according to the season all year round. Primer: Many like to use CC creams for their ease of application, which combine beautifully with their sunscreen. Especially since the moisturizing cream may make the foundation cream too liquid, so it is recommended to use a moisturizing primer that matches the base cream and allows it to stick and stay longer
  17. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-58020494 Zia Ghafoori, his pregnant wife and their three small children landed in the United States from their home in Kabul in September 2014. He held five US visas - a reward for 14 years of service as an interpreter with US Special Forces in Afghanistan. But the benefits stopped there. Upon arrival, Zia found himself homeless - sent to a shelter by a well-meaning volunteer who told him it would be a place for him and his family to start a new life. Seven years later, the memory still angers him. Speaking to the BBC from North Carolina, where he now lives, he recalled struggling to look his children in the eye, apologising for bringing them to the US. "I couldn't control my tears," he said. "After what I had done for both countries, I was asking myself 'is this what I deserve?'" But among his peers Zia, now 37, counts himself lucky to have made it to the US at all. Tens of thousands of Afghans have served as interpreters, fixers and local guides to US and allied soldiers since the start of Afghan War in 2001, when Western forces invaded to wrest control of the country from the Taliban. Decades after the beginning of what would become America's longest-running conflict, President Joe Biden has vowed to withdraw US troops by 11 September - even as the Taliban appear poised to return to power. A prolonged exodus Mr Biden promised that a mass evacuation of interpreters would begin before August, and on Friday, 200 Afghans out of an initial group of 2,500 arrived in the US to complete their visa applications and begin new lives. As many as 50,000 interpreters have worked with the US military. Since 2008, some 70,000 Afghans - interpreters and their families - have moved to the US under a special immigrant visa awarded for their service. But some 20,000 interpreters and their families are still seeking a way out. They face a clogged and complex visa process and the threat of a swift Taliban advance as the US winds down its 20-year war. The danger to interpreters - marked for their work for the Americans - is grave. An estimated 300 interpreters have died since 2009 while seeking a US visa - a process that can take years. The delays have stung Zia. "These people stood up and fought shoulder and shoulder to support both countries... and we're closing our eyes and leaving them there, leaving them to die," he said. To hear Zia tell it, it was also the realisation of a promise made to his mother six years earlier, when the Taliban swept to power in Afghanistan. Then a grade school student, Zia saw the sudden end of a carefree childhood, an easy rotation between school, soccer, and games with his seven siblings. Zia recalled his lively neighborhood transformed under strict Islamic rule - indiscriminate beatings of men and women, a strange quiet as families hid indoors, his sisters barred from school. His older brother, then in his twenties, was beaten and thrown in prison after he was overheard speaking the dialect of Panjshir valley, then the center of anti-Taliban resistance. The beating left his feet and legs so swollen, he couldn't put on his boots, Zia said. The injuries were so bad he was unable to walk. Within days, his parents decided they couldn't stay. The family fled from their home in Kabul, moving to Pashawar, Pakistan. "I told my mom, 'When I grow up, I will fight against these people,'" he said, referring to the Taliban. In Pashawar, he learned English at school. His family remained in Pakistan until 2001, when the US began its decades-long invasion. "When I got back, I saw a stable government was starting," Zia said. "I said ok, now we have a hope." He settled back into life in Afghanistan, got married and began teaching English at a local school. Within months of his return, a friend told him the Americans were in need of interpreters. They went the very next day, he said, showing up at the base in Kabul asking about a job. "They were just hiring people who could speak English. I didn't know military words, they told me 'no problem,'". He loved the work, he said, despite the months-long tours away from home, and the acute threat of serving on the front lines. He resisted pleas from his wife and family to retire, saying he was devoted to his "brothers" of the US armed forces, who gave him his nickname, "Booyah". "We were the eye and the tongue of the military," Zia said. For Zia, working with the Green Berets, this meant near-constant proximity to violence and death. In April 2008, he accompanied US forces in the Battle of Shok Valley. Minutes into the six-hour firefight his best friend, another interpreter, was killed. The battle spawned the highest number of Silver Stars - the second-highest decoration for value - of any battle since Vietnam.
  18. The risks of heatstroke at one of the hottest Games on record are borne not only by the athletes, but also by the thousands of staff, especially at outdoor venues. In addition to conventional measures like water spray and mist fans, organisers are going high-tech, deploying a cloud-based system from Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group to monitor workers' real-time conditions and send warnings and advice at signs of danger . Already at the Games, a Russian archer has collapsed from the heat and skateboarders complained that conditions were oppressive at 9 a.m., with highs over 30 degrees Celsius (85 degrees Fahrenheit), dripping humidity and virtually daily warning heats from the Japanese weather agency. To forestall heatstroke, staff at 14 venues are using a black earpiece that sends heart rate and body temperature measurements to the cloud, where heatstroke risks are evaluated by an algorithm combining individual data and environmental factors. The system sends alerts to those at high risk of heatstroke through an app, with recommended precautions such as taking a rest and drinking more water. “I think it’s useful in terms of heatstroke prevention” because it sends “even when I haven’t noticed (the heatstroke precursors) myself,” said a 21-year-old staffer who guides Olympic participants at the National Stadium. slideshow ( 2 images ) Alibaba Cloud, a global Olympic partner, said it has been working with organisers for years to launch the device. Because climate change is a growing challenge for outdoor sporting events, “we started trying to use our cloud-computing technology to speed up all of the digitalisation,” said Selina Yuan, general manager of the international business unit at Alibaba Cloud. The cloud device supplements measures such as shifting some outdoor competitions to less-sweltering times of the day, moving the marathon to Hokkaido in the north and devices from mist-spraying stations here for Olympic horses to cooling vests for referees. A study here last year by a Games adviser of data back to 1984 found that Tokyo had the highest average temperature and precipitation of any host city for the period the Olympics were held. And Tokyo's five hottest days here since 1964 fell in or around the July 23-Aug. 8 period of this year's Games. The Alibaba gadget “is helpful as a tool for alerts and health maintenance for staff involved in events” by addressing the causes of heatstroke, Tokyo 2020 organisers told Reuters by email.
