Cyclone Fani has caused extensive damage in Bangladesh, despite weakening as it blew north from India. More than 1,000 homes have been destroyed and entire villages submerged in the South Asian country. At least five people died and 63 were injured. With more than a million people evacuated to safety, the director of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said "fear of a major disaster is mostly over".The cyclone was downgraded to a depression as it swept north-eastwards from India into Bangladesh on Saturday, but was still powerful enough to submerge dozens of villages on the low lying coast. Gusts of up to 70km/h (43mph) were registered. Houses were also destroyed in the Noakhali district, where 30 people were injured and two children killed, one aged 12 and another two years old. India also moved more than a million people to safety to avoid Cyclone Fani. A least 16 people were killed by the storm when it hit India on Friday, but officials said the loss of life could have been far worse.In 1999, a super-cyclone in the Bay of Bengal ravaged the coast of Orissa for 30 hours and killed 10,000 people. Early cyclone warning systems have since improved, giving authorities more time to evacuate people. The chief minister of Orissa said this was one of the largest evacuations in human history.

A retired Army officer is campaigning for thousands of World War Two soldiers to be honoured. Retired Lt Col Trevor Powell said some British Expeditionary Force (BEF) soldiers had not been recognised with an additional clasp for their 1939-45 Star, despite others receiving it. The BEF were the first British soldiers to fight in France and Belgium in 1939-40. More than 300 people signed Mr Powell's petition for the BEF to get the honour. Mr Powell, from Betws Diserth in Powys, said: "No medal was ever struck to recognise the considerable contribution of members of the British Expeditionary Force in 1939-1940. "With the approach of the 80th anniversary, it would be fitting for some formal recognition at last to be made to the few remaining survivors of this undervalued force." When Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a recent election meeting in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, he was compelled to make a promise relating to sugar, a diet staple. "One would think that perhaps political parties that don't benefit from links to sugar might have incentives to reform the sector, but we have seen parties everywhere want a piece of the action," says Dr Sukhtankar. One of the farmers' demands was to arrest a state minister, who was heading three mills in the state, and had defaulted on his cane dues. When negotiations ended way past midnight, authorities issued orders to seize sugar from the offending mills and sell it in retail. In India's lumbering bureaucracy, that took another eight hours because 500 copies of the orders had to be printed. "My office is pelted by stones every other day by irate farmers,"Cane grower Suresh Mahadev Gatage says there is 'no future in cane' Meanwhile, what is completely forgotten is how much sugar has hurt India's ecology. More than 60% of the water available for farming in India is consumed by rice and sugar, two crops that occupy 24% of the cultivable area. Experts say crop prices should begin to reflect the scarcity and economic value of water. But before that, as Raju Shetti, MP and a prominent leader of sugarcane farmers, says, price controls should be eased and bulk corporate buyers like soft drink companies and pharmaceuticals should pay more for sugar. "We need differential pricing for sugar. Cheap sugar should be only provided to people who can't afford it. The rest should pay a higher price," he told me. "Otherwise, the industry will collapse, and farmers will die. Even politicians will not be able to save it."

A Polish tourist has been jailed for five years in Indonesia after being convicted of plotting with rebels in the east of the country. Jakub Skrzypski, 39, was arrested in Papua province last August and accused of treason after allegedly making contacts with separatists there. Papuan student Simon Magal who met Skrzypski and contacted him on Facebook was also jailed for four years. Skrzypski has denied plotting against the state and insists he is a tourist. "I didn't have the opportunity to speak in my defence or to present any favourable evidence. I reject the trial as well as the verdict," he told the in a text message. Ever since the upsurge of po[CENSORED]r unrest - the so-called "Arab Spring" - erupted in the Middle East just over eight years ago, the region has undergone profound change. In many cases authoritarian rule was never seriously challenged. In other places it was restored quickly, as in the case of Egypt, or more slowly and only partially, as in the case of Syria. But the chaos and bloodshed in Syria was to a large extent influenced by the actions of external actors. And there is now a danger that the second wave of po[CENSORED]r protest in the region - notably in Sudan - may also be heavily influenced by external players. This is not to say that Sudan risks going the way of the factionalism and bitter communal struggles that have plagued Syria. But many of the same factors that are shaping the contemporary Middle East are at play in Sudan too, notably the growing role of the Saudis who, along with their Gulf allies, are waging a multi-front battle for influence against Qatar and especially Turkey. This regional rivalry is to a large extent both facilitated and explained by the notable absence of the US as a serious diplomatic actor. It has also been partially eclipsed by Russia, which has used its engagement in Syria as a means of re-asserting its place at the Middle East's diplomatic table. 'Little interest in protest voices' The Saudis have to a considerable extent seized and held the diplomatic initiative. They and the UAE have pitched in with financial aid for Sudan, including an immediate injection of cash and transfers of cheap fuel, food and medicines. Abu Dhabi has hosted talks among various armed groups about future political arrangements. And Riyadh's ally, Egypt, has played a role in deploying its diplomatic muscle at the African Union.
