  3. New electric Kia Niro has a 239-mile range 64-kWh lithium-ion battery, 201-horsepower electric motor Full recharge in under 10 hours with 220-volt AC charger DC Fast Charger gives 80 percent in 75 minutes On sale by late February Sold in 12 states Pricing expected around $37,500 The Kia Niro, when it arrived in 2016, was designed to accommodate a variety of electrified powertrains. The Niro hybrid came first, followed by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version in 2017 and now the fully electric model. KBB recently drove this 2019 Kia Niro EV, which goes on sale soon in 12 U.S. states and has an EPA-estimated range of 239 miles. Competitors include the Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3 and the Hyundai Kona EV. While some people may think of the new Niro EV as Kia’s version of the Hyundai Kona EV, it’s not. Rather, the Niro EV shares its chassis with the Hyundai Ioniq. As such, it has a much roomier back seat than the Kona EV, but as a slightly heavier vehicle it can’t quite match the impressive 258-mile range of the Hyundai, even though it does have the same 201-horsepower electric motor and 64-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack. That Niro EV’s liquid-cooled battery pack — mounted low and flat in the chassis, between the front and rear axles — is huge, so large that one Kia engineer likened it to a queen-size mattress. By itself, it tips the scales at 1,008 pounds, which means it represents more than 26 percent of the Niro EV’s 3,854-pound curb weight. The battery in the Niro PHEV, for the record, weighs only 85 pounds. Ponder that for a few. How does the new Kia Niro EV drive? With that big chunk of weight so low to the ground and between the axles (where chassis engineers like it), the Niro EV drives remarkably well. This new electric Kia feels substantial, not the least bit tinny, and it takes corners with minimal body roll and excellent composure thanks to its low center gravity. It’s a quiet car, and there’s plenty of space for a 6-foot-tall passenger to ride behind a driver of the same size. A rotary-dial controller on the center console is used to engage Drive, and while the front seating position is about an inch higher than that of the standard Niro hybrid, it’s because the whole vehicle is raised, not because the seat has been raised within the 5-seat cabin. The same, though, can’t be said in back, where the battery has pushed up the Niro EV’s floorboard and rear seat a small but noticeable amount. Power from the permanent-magnet electric motor is good, with enough juice on tap to screech the front tires away from a stoplight and propel the Niro EV to a top speed of 103 mph. Moreover, there are noticeable differences among the four driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport, Eco+), which tailor the motor response, regen braking, air conditioning, heating and the other systems to satisfy driver tastes. Four levels of regen braking One of the best traits of the new Niro EV is its smart regenerative braking system, which recharges the battery during vehicle deceleration and allows one pedal driving. Via paddles on the back of the steering wheel, drivers can choose four levels of regenerative braking (0-3). In level 3, the highest, deceleration upon pedal liftoff is so pronounced that the Niro EV’s brake lights illuminate. In this mode, single-pedal driving is possible, aided by a left paddle that can be used at single-digit speeds to help bring the Niro EV to a stop without using the brake pedal. So, why is it called a “smart” regen system? Whenever a vehicle is sensed in front of the Niro EV, regen adjusts automatically for smoother coast-down driving. Similarly, regen is adjusted for added smoothness on steep downhills. Also, a handy Eco Guide in the instrument cluster helps monitor the Niro EV’s real-time power distribution. Niro EV: the inside story Besides niceties such as a 7-inch touchscreen and standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, the 2019 Kia Niro EV is remarkably well equipped. The quality of the interior materials is high, and the latest UVO telematics help the driver monitor the battery while it’s charging, or even pre-condition the cabin prior to use. Nor is safety tech forgotten; it’s highlighted by seven standard airbags, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot collision warning and smart cruise control with stop and go. Regarding charging, Kia tells us that the Niro EV -- using the new Combined Charging System (CCS) plug and a 220-volt Level II charger -- can be fully recharged in 9 hours and 35 minutes. And get this: If you have access to a DC fast charger, the battery can be brought up to a 100-mile recharge in only 30 minutes. Viewed another way, an 80 percent (of total battery capacity) recharge is available in 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  4. Pope Francis has admitted that clerics have sexually abused nuns, and in one case they were kept as sex slaves. He said in that case his predecessor, Pope Benedict, was forced to shut down an entire congregation of nuns who were being abused by priests. It is thought to be the first time that Pope Francis has acknowledged the sexual abuse of nuns by the clergy. He said the Church was attempting to address the problem but said it was "still going on". Last November, the Catholic Church's global organisation for nuns denounced the "culture of silence and secrecy" that prevented them from speaking out. The Pope's comments come amid long-running cases of sexual abuse of children and young men by priests at the Church. Child sex abuse and the Catholic Church Profile: Pope Francis What did Pope Francis say? Speaking to reporters while on a historic tour of the Middle East on Tuesday, the pontiff admitted that the Church had an issue, the roots of which lie in "seeing women as second class". He said that priests and bishops had abused nuns, but said the Church was aware of the "scandal" and was "working on it", adding that a number of clerics had been suspended. "It's a path that we've been on," he said. "Pope Benedict had the courage to dissolve a female congregation which was at a certain level, because this slavery of women had entered it - slavery, even to the point of sexual slavery - on the part of clerics or the founder." Pope Francis said sexual abuse of nuns was an ongoing problem, but happened largely in "certain congregations, predominantly new ones". "I think it's still taking place because it's not as though the moment you become aware of something it goes away." Where is the abuse said to have taken place? The female congregation dissolved in 2005 under Pope Benedict was the Community of St Jean, which was based in France, Alessandro Gisotti of the Vatican press office told CBS News. In 2013, the Community of St Jean admitted that priests had behaved "in ways that went against chastity" with several women in the order, according to the French Roman Catholic newspaper La Croix. In a separate case in India last year, a bishop was arrested over allegations that he raped a nun 13 times between 2014 and 2016. Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who headed the diocese in Jalandhar in the northern state of Punjab, has denied the accusations. In Chile, reports of abuse of nuns carried out by priests led the Vatican to launch an investigation last year. The women were reportedly removed from the order after highlighting the abuse. Last year, the Associated Press news agency reported cases of abuse in Italy and Africa. What have women in the Church said? Just days ago the Vatican's women's magazine, Women Church World, condemned the abuse, saying in some cases nuns were forced to abort priests' children - something Catholicism forbids. The magazine's editor, Lucetta Scaraffia, said Pope Francis's acknowledgement of the abuse "can be of some help", but warned that the Church needs to act. "If the Church continues to close its eyes to the scandal... the condition of oppression of women in the church will never change," she wrote. The magazine said the #MeToo movement meant more women were now coming forward with their stories. Last year, French website Le Parisien reported the case of "Christelle" (in French), a former nun whose name was changed to preserve anonymity. Christelle said she had suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a priest of her congregation in France between 2010 and 2011. "His gestures became more and more inappropriate," she said, adding: "But he kept going... until the day he raped me. "He was unable to control himself... he had a split personality."

  9. Website and database breaches are becoming a more frequent occurrence these days, which is why it has become even more imperative for users to take stock in the passwords they use [and reuse] on multiple websites. In order to add an extra layer of protection and to prompt users to change passwords that may have been compromised with previous breaches, Google has announced the availability of its Password Checkup extension for the Chrome web browser. To put it simply, whenever you input your username and password to sign-on on to a website, the Password Checkup extension will automatically compare those entries to a database that contains over 4 billion compromised credentials. If your login credentials are found within the database, Google will present a warning message that alerts you to change your password. Google says that it won't keep bombarding you with alerts for just any username/password combination to avoid "fatiguing" the user. "We won’t bother you about outdated passwords you’ve already reset or merely weak passwords like 123456," writes Google. "We only generate an alert when both your current username and password appear in a breach, as that poses the greatest risk." Now before you ask, yes you are sending your login and password information to Google by using this extension. And chances are you likely already your passwords stored using Autofill in Chrome anyway. But Google is looking to calm any fears about Google using this information for nefarious purposes or it falling into the wrong hands, writing: At a high level, Password Checkup needs to query Google about the breach status of a username and password without revealing the information queried. At the same time, we need to ensure that no information about other unsafe usernames or passwords leaks in the process, and that brute force guessing is not an option. Password Checkup addresses all of these requirements by using multiple rounds of hashing, k-anonymity, private information retrieval, and a technique called blinding. Of course, apps like LastPass have similar functionality built-in, and you could always go to a website like HaveIBeenPwned.com to see if your credentials have been compromised. But nothing beats the convenience of having an extension installed on the world's most po[CENSORED]r browser to automatically do the dirty work for you.
  10. We don't have a crystal ball handy, but if you ask Microsoft, the company will tell you that the future of playing games will at least partially be driven by streaming titles from the cloud. That is Microsoft's vision with Project xCloud, an ambitious streaming platform. Microsoft has not shared a ton of details about the upcoming service, though it did reveal that all digital Xbox One games currently in the Microsoft Store on Xbox will be capable of streaming to a mobile device. More on that in a moment, but first, let's take a step back for a moment. Microsoft describes Project xCloud as "the future of gaming" where gamers are empowered to play the games they want with the people they want, wherever they are and on any device. That means streaming a hit title to a tablet or smartphone. As with other similar services, this also means offloading the heavy lifting to the cloud. In this case, Microsoft is building the requisite hardware to deploy in data centers, and in fact has starting doing that in its data center in Quincy, Washington. In its current iteration, the hardware essentially consists of server blades outfitted with multiple Xbox One components. Now here's where things get interesting. "Yes, you can play your Xbox games on mobile! Project xCloud is enabling Console Native games to stream through our Azure-hosted game servers and streaming clients," Microsoft explains on the Game Developers Conference (GDC) website. "Any Console Native game currently shipping in the Microsoft Store on Xbox will be capable of streaming to a mobile device." Microsoft also said that Project xCloud is an "open platform with a customizable Client UX where streaming starts with Xbox game developers not having to modify a single line of existing game code." That's huge, as it means gamers will be able to play any digital Xbox One game on any device, rather than only a limited selection of titles. Of course, there is the issue of latency, which is one of the reasons why streaming game services have been slow to become po[CENSORED]r. Microsoft insists it has a handle on things, though, and that Project xCloud is progressing nicely. It's even started developing game controllers for smartphones, for its Project xCloud service. Perhaps just as importantly, Microsoft is not looking to replace home consoles, which it says will still offer a flagship gaming experience. At the same time, the promise is that Project xCloud will deliver "console quality gaming on any device." Time will tell.

  13. or as long as I’ve worked at Kelley Blue Book (12 years) the North American International Auto Show in Detroit has occurred during the winter. No more. For 2020, the show is moving to June. We decided to celebrate the final wintry Detroit Auto Show with a true expression of the city’s capacity to rock; the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. Resilient people are forged in the bitter winds of a Michigan winter. I, however, am a soft and casual Californian. Thankfully the Trackhawk is man enough for the both of us. Quick reminder, the Trackhawk is tarmac-focused, speed freak built from the well-worn bones of the current 4th-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee. 707-horsepower on tap Here’s the crazy part…Jeep crammed the Dodge Charger/Challenger Hellcat’s supercharged 6.2-liter V8 under the Trackhawk’s hood. If the only thing keeping you from buying a Grand Cherokee was its inability to sprint from motionless to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds, congrats! Your ship has come in. By the numbers the Trackhawk delivers 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. The Trackhawk’s numbers are dazzling but the real joy in driving a Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is exploiting those numbers. Did you know that, thanks to po[CENSORED]tion contraction, much of Detroit is unoccupied. These open spaces empower eager souls to live life out loud. In my case, by sampling the 2019 Trackhawk’s launch control feature. Press a button to the left of the drive mode selector to activate it. Then, from a stop, hold the brake with your left foot, mash the accelerator with your right foot, briefly revel in the cacophonous melody of V8 revs, then release the brake… In cinematic slow-mo, your left foot slowly lifts from brake pedal, clutch packs wince as they convey Hellcat power from the engine to the transmission, all four tires start to rotate, aching for grip. Meanwhile, anyone privileged enough to join the ride aboard will slowly reckon with forces previously unimaginable in a midsize Jeep SUV. Their laughs and shrieks express an ideal blend of fear and bliss, alerting their co-conspirators that “best lives” are being lived. We unleashed that explosion of joy, time and time again. And, Detroit being Detroit, no one noticed or cared. Grip and grin As luck would have it, it barely snowed while we were in town. That good fortune meant the 4-wheel drive system was free to focus on fun rather than seeking traction where little exists. Nonetheless, freezing temperatures and the threat of ice kept me from exploring the Trackhawks handling limits. A braver pilot might’ve exploited the front seats’ superior side bolstering. A colleague tells me the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is a wonder to behold at a race track. I have no reason to doubt them. Including destination charges and essentially every feature Jeep offers, the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk’s roughly $88,145 starting price is an objective bargain. Name a quicker, cheaper SUV. I’ll wait. Still waiting. With audio and wheel upgrades, our test Jeep clocked in at $92,130. If you’d felt what I felt and heard what I heard as we blasted through the wilds of Detroit, that nearly $100-grand asking price would seem like a pittance. But still, you wonder, does this super Jeep makes any sense? To be clear, no, it does not. And that is the linchpin to its charm. There’s no reason a rugged SUV should accelerate, steer, and brake like a not-quite-current supercar. How wonderful then that there’s a place zany enough to dream up such lunacy. It’s called Detroit. You should visit sometime. Perhaps in the summer.
