A SOGGY Sydney Sunday didn’t deter the fashion pack from popping on their heels, pulling out their iPhones and swathing themselves in (often borrowed) front-row clothes for the first day of Mercedes Australian Fashion Week. And what better location to kick off the next week of frock watching than with the dynamic backdrop of the Sydney Opera House as the canvas? Dion Lee showed his resort 2018 collection, underneath the sails of the Sydney Opera House, paying tribute to a personal involvement the designer shares with the iconic landmark. In 2010, Dion Lee was the first designer to stage a runway presentation at the famous venue, returning to the site to show again in 2011 and 2014. This year marks a deepening of Dion’s association with the Sydney Opera House, with the announcement that Lee will design the House’s new uniforms. Dion, at just 32 years of age, will design a range of uniforms for more than 600 employees, including front-of-house, box office and tour guide staff. Sydney Opera House CEO Louise Herron AM said: “Renewal is transforming the Opera House for future generations of artists, audiences, visitors and, most immediately, for the hundreds of staff who make the magic happen on-and-off stage, 363 days a year. “Dion is one of Australia’s brightest fashion stars whose work draws so beautifully on the sculptural elegance of Utzon’s masterpiece. It will be wonderful to work with him to create a new uniform collection for the people who bring the place to life.” Within the collection Lee unveiled today, the designer took references from his Australian heritage, layered with the building’s sculptural architecture. Amazing shades of red, cobalt blue, gold and black stood out against the opera house sail ‘tiles’ with draped, folded, embellished, knotted and tailored pieces along with ear cuffs and natural looking ‘messy’ hair vibe on the models. Alongside womenswear, Mr Lee also showed his first menswear collection with 10 menswear looks that included constructed tailoring, utility shirting, knitwear and ‘laminated’ outerwear. The collection also marked the first time all Dion Lee categories appeared together including swimwear and sunglasses alongside collaborations with Akubra for millinery, Sarah & Sebastian for jewellery and RM Williams for boots. Lee kicked off the most high-profile week on Australia’s fashion calendar with other designers showcasing their resort collections this week, including Bec & Bridge, Alice McCall, Sass & Bide, Steven Khalil, Romance Was Born, Bianca Spender, Kitx, We Are Kindred, Akira, Ten Pieces, Macgraw, Michael Lo Sordo, Christopher Esber and Kym Ellery. The recent shift in making resort clothes a focus of the week has brought interest from international buyers, including Net-A-Porter, Selfridges and Browns in London. A handful of international designers will be showing too: Katama by Garrett Neff from the US, V Major out of China and Zambesi from New Zealand. While Dion used the Opera House as his dramatic backdrop most of the shows will be held at Carriageworks in Redfern, Sydney with the iconic Icebergs at Bondi and the Andrew Boy Charlton Pool in the Domain also gearing up as fashion week venues. As usual, a sea of fashion bloggers posed around the place, but the really important and influential people are the buyers and bigger picture media companies who have the power to give a designer a serious adrenalin shot in the retail arm. After today’s first show, the opening night part hosted by Mercedes in the Botanic Gardens, kicked off the apres-show part of fashion week - which for many, is the only reason they attend. * Mercedes Australian Fashion Week will go from May 14-19 with open-to-the-public shows happening next weekend.

President Xi Jinping has called for closer co-operation across Asia and Europe in areas from anti-terrorism to finance. It comes as leaders from 29 countries gathered in Beijing on Sunday to promote a Chinese trade initiative that could increase China's global influence. The Belt and Road Initiative calls for building ports, railways and other facilities in a vast arc of 65 countries. Other countries welcome the investment but governments including the United States, Russia and India have expressed unease Beijing also might be using the effort to increase its political stature. Speaking before an audience that included Russian President Vladimir Putin, Xi said his government has "no desire to impose our will on others." But he called for "economic integration" and co-operation on financial regulation, anti-terrorism and security - fields in which China's heft as the world's No. 2 economy would make it a dominant player. "We should foster a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security," said Xi. He called for stepped-up action against terrorism and what he called its root causes of poverty and social injustice. In a reminder of potential security threats, North Korea test-fired on Sunday what could be a new type of missile in a direct challenge to the new South Korean president. The "Belt and Road" is Xi's signature foreign policy initiative. The two-day meeting gives him a platform to promote his image as a global leader and free trade advocate in contrast to US President Donald Trump, who has called for import restrictions. China is hardly the first government to promote regional trade links. Japan has given billions of dollars in grants and low-cost loans to Southeast Asian nations, and governments including South Korea have launched trade initiatives. But Beijing's effort is the most ambitious and is backed by China's financial muscle and status as the biggest global trader. Chinese officials have said previously "Belt and Road" is purely commercial, though Xi's comments indicated Beijing sees that as including a broad array of regulatory and other co-ordination with potentially far-reaching consequences. Some diplomats and political analysts say Beijing is trying to create a political and economic network centred on China, push the United States out of the region and rewrite rules on trade and security. The United States and Japan, which Beijing sees as rivals for influence in Asia, are not part of "Belt and Road." China and Russia already are partners, along with Central Asian governments, in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a security group widely seen as an effort to counter US influence in the region. Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan echoed Xi's theme that economic development would help to nurture political stability and neutralise support for radical groups. The Russian leader complained about "illegal sanctions" - a possible reference to US trade penalties imposed on Moscow over Ukraine - and warned trade protectionism is creating a "breeding ground" for terrorism. Closer economic integration "should change the very political and economic landscape of the continent, bringing Eurasia stability, prosperity," said Putin. Referring to Bejing's plan, Erdogan said, "This is going to be the kind of initiative that puts an end to terrorism." Xi called for regional cooperation in finance - a field where China's huge state-owned banking industry and $US3 trillion ($A4.1 trillion) of foreign currency reserves would make it the dominant player. Other leaders included Premier Paolo Gentiloni of Italy and President Michelle Bachelet of Chile. No major Western leaders attended, though Britain, France, Australia and Germany were represented by top finance officials.

Amid the hoopla over the Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3 a new plug-in sales leader from Toyota emerges. The Chevy Bolt is the North American Car of the Year as well as (do we really need both?). It is also one of Po[CENSORED]r Mechanics’ top picks for 2017. The only trouble is that it isn’t selling well. and it is less than six months into its launch. The Tesla Model 3 is the hottest new car in America according to many electric vehicle advocacy publications The trouble is, there is no Tesla Model 3. It is not for sale, and it has never been tested. By anyone. It is not yet a production car. Meanwhile, over at Toyota, the newly updated 2017 Prius Prime plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has quietly risen to be the number one selling electric vehicle in America in April. Don’t take our word for it. Check our Inside EVs’ monthly sales chart. The writing on the wall has been apparent all year. Like pretty much every Toyota product launch, the Prius Prime was delivered on time, is what was expected, is able to be produced in reasonable numbers, and it aced all its crash tests recently over at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.Something no Tesla has ever done. And perhaps most important of all, it is actually for sale. How could a car that hardly anyone outside of the green car media even knows about be the top selling car in the EV segment? Simple. It does all the things green car owners want it to do. It can operate in most states’ HOV lanes including California’s. It comes with a federal tax deduction and state incentives just like the Bolt and Tesla models do and will. And it has an extremely low cost of operation per mile. Importantly, unlike the Bolt and future Model 3, the Prime can be refueled anywhere in under five minutes. The folks at Toyota also cheat a bit. They offer no-cost maintenance for two years

Eitr is an Action RPG offering challenging precision-intensive combat as players progress through the environments. Warriors will need to use a combination of blocking, combos, buffs and positioning to succeed in battle. Based in Norse mythology, Eitr tells the story of the world tree, Yggdrasil, the connector of the 9 Norse worlds, which becomes poisoned with Eitr -- a dark poison substance that corrupts whoever or whatever it comes into contact with -- and begins to spew darkness into each world. You play as a Shield Maiden. Like other mortal Norsemen, her fate was to be determined pre-birth by the three fate-weaving Norns, but for no reason other than his own tormented sadistic gratification, Loki interfered, dripping spots of wretched Eitr into the unwoven fate loom, determining the fate of an unborn child and simultaneously causing the light to fade from Yggdrasil. It is this Shield Maidens quest to restore the light to Yggdrasil, or watch the nine Norse worlds fade into inevitable darkness. Initial release date: 2017 Developer: Eneme Entertainment Designer: David Wright Publisher: Devolver Digital Platforms: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Macintosh operating systems

Dubai: The Dubai government on Sunday announced the launch of "Dubai Font", the first typeface developed by Microsoft for a city, which will be available in 23 languages. The font was developed simultaneously in Latin and Arabic script and is available to 100 million Office 365 users around the world. Dubai Crown Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed al-Maktoum has urged all government institutions to adopt the font in official correspondence. The Executive Council of Dubai, which manages the affairs of the city-state and is headed by Prince Hamdan, said the font reflects the United Arab Emirates´ vision "to become a regional and global leader in innovation". "It is the first font to be developed by a city and to carry its name", Executive Council secretary general Abdulla al-Shaiban told a news conference. Home to the world´s tallest tower and the largest shopping mall in the Middle East, image-conscious Dubai has pushed in recent years to broaden its appeal by investing in its technology and culture. The emirate also aims to emerge as the world´s happiest city, and last year appointed a happiness minister. In 2016, some 14.9 million tourists visited Dubai, the most liberal of the UAE´s seven emirates and its least dependent on oil revenues. Dubai will host the six-month Expo 2020 under the themes of sustainability and mobility.
