  5. What just happened? Messenger is the second-most-po[CENSORED]r messaging app in the world, but not every user has a Facebook account. Now, however, that’s no longer an option for new signups after the company removed the ability to use phone numbers instead of a FB account. It was back in 2015 when the social network started allowing people to sign up for Messenger without a Facebook account. Phone numbers, photos, and names were all accepted as forms of login identification, but a change in the company's Help Center website states that "you'll need to create a Facebook account to use Messenger." Facebook confirmed the new rule to VentureBeat. “We found that the vast majority of people who use Messenger already log in through Facebook and we want to simplify the process,” said a company spokesperson. The good news for those already using Messenger without a Facebook account is that the change won’t affect them; it only applies to those "new to Messenger." But some Redditors claim otherwise, stating that the app is informing them their accounts are restricted. Whether this is due to a bug or something else is unclear. The change is likely related to Facebook’s plan to unify all of its messaging apps, which will allow users to send messages across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. The three apps boast almost 3 billion monthly active users combined, with WhatsApp being the most po[CENSORED]r (1.5 billion MAUs). Rob, T. (2019, December 27). 6. Something to look forward to: AMD declared war on Intel with the launch of Ryzen, forcing both companies to rapidly bring their respective strengths of core count and frequency as close to their immediate limits as possible. With Intel seemingly unable to squeeze past 5 GHz without developing a new node, and AMD waiting for software to catch up before adding more cores, the present battleground is in IPC (instructions per clock). And Zen 3 is reported to be doing admirably thus far, with improvements approaching 20%. As AMD confirmed at the HPC-AI Advisory Council UK conference, their next-generation server architecture, Milan, is being tested by their biggest customers. Milan and Ryzen 4000 will share the same Zen 3 architecture and TSMC’s 7nm+ EUV process, meaning that most we hear about Milan applies to 2020’s Ryzen, too. According to Red Gaming Tech and Bits n' Chips, a multitude of AMD’s customers have tested Zen 3 and all say the same thing. The new architecture’s redesigned floating-point units have increased IPC in scientific tasks by something close to 50%, while integer work has seen a 10-12% boost. The combination of the two has resulted in a ~17% or greater IPC increase in mixed workloads. Zen 3 will deliver performance gains "right in line with what you would expect from an entirely new architecture." - AMD executive Forrest Norrod told The Street A few leaked AMD slides, confirmed and elaborated upon by industry sources, explain how these IPC improvements have come about. Unlike the jump from Zen+ to Zen 2, which merged two quad-core CCXs (core complex) into one octa-core CCD (core complex die), Zen 3 is reported to have unified octa-core CCDs. This does two things, theoretically: radically reduces the average inter-core communication latency and increases the amount of L3 cache each core has available to it. Having a unified octa-core CCD is very powerful. In our 4 GHz comparison, we found best-matched threads in the 9900K to have 46.5 ns of communication latency and the worst to have 52.6 ns. The 3700X, with two CCXs, had a best result of 30.2 ns and a worst result of 84.6 ns. That means that in applications with minimal inter-thread communication like Cinebench, Zen 2 can beat Intel, but in communication heavy applications like games, Intel has the advantage. The rumored Zen 3 octa-core CCD design flips that on its head and could take away Intel’s latency advantage in games. Testing has shown that Zen 3 apparently has "significantly enhanced" latency across the chip. I doubt many Milan server CPUs have been tested with games, but when consumer Zen 3 does arrive, the IPC increase in games could be more than what we're hearing about currently. Reworking the CCD designs requires the cache to be reworked, too. In Zen 2 each CCD has 32 MB of L3 cache, but it’s split into two discrete 16 MB packages, one for each CCX. With a unified CCD design, the full 32 MB becomes available to all eight cores at high speeds. AMD’s slides confirm this, but also suggest that there may be more than 32 MB per CCD. According to Bits n’ Chips, there may be an increase of "at least" 50%, but we’ll have to see if this applies to server versions of the chip only. Industry sources have also hinted that the L3 cache could get a 40% increase in bandwidth. AMD finally matched Intel on L3 bandwidth with Zen 2, so pushing past them could put Intel on the backfoot there, too. Apart from IPC, there might not be many other changes with Zen 3. Core counts are expected to stay the same, for a few good reasons; the market isn’t ready, AM4 can’t support more, the software is still trying to catch up, etc. Clock speeds on the server chips have apparently increased by 100 MHz to 200 MHz, but AMD has already pushed their clocks aggressively with Zen 2, so we wouldn’t expect much there. TSMC is upgrading AMD to the 7nm+ EUV node, and node changes offer its advantages. While the boost clocks on the new chips might not improve much, the base clocks might. With the introduction of EUV (extreme ultraviolet lithography), yields should give AMD further breathing room on pricing. Of course, this is all theoretical as AMD is months away from deciding on prices. Which perhaps brings us to the most important point: Zen 3 is technically complete, but we’re still anywhere from 6 to 12 months away from launch. Even if everything we suspect now is correct, it could all change by the time Ryzen 4000 series CPUs are released. Isaiah, M. (2019, December 28). Zen 3 is rumored to be flaunting monumental IPC gains in early testing. Retrieved from https://www.techspot.com/news/83347-zen-3-rumored-flaunting-monumental-ipc-gains-early.html

  10. What just happened? Steam’s Best of 2019 charts are here, highlighting the year’s top sellers, new releases, early access titles, and VR games, as well as the games with most simultaneous players. As usual, the lists are separated into Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, and they contain some unexpected entries. Despite being released on Windows back in 2015, Grand Theft Auto V remains one of the year’s best-sellers on Steam. The Platinum category is also po[CENSORED]ted with PUBG, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Total War: Three Kingdoms. Free games including CS:GO, Dota 2, and Warframe make the list, which is measured by gross revenue for the year. Destiny 2 also makes an appearance, even though it only launched on the platform on November 1. In the Gold category, we see Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Resident Evil 2, and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. There’s also 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which saw a resurgence in po[CENSORED]rity recently, thanks to Netflix’s TV show. The Silver list shows that titles such as Team Fortress 2 and Borderlands 2 remain po[CENSORED]r, while Cyberpunk 2077’s pre-orders secure it a place in the Bronze section. When it comes to the top games released this year, Red Dead Redemption 2 is ranked as Platinum, though it only managed Silver in the overall top-sellers list. The excellent Beat Sabre and Superhot VR made the top VR-only Platinum category, while They Are Billions and PC Building Simulator were two of the biggest games that left Early Access this year. Finally, there are the most-played games of the year. Twelve games had a peak concurrent player count of over 100,000 people, including Sekiro, PUBG, Total War: Three Kingdoms, and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. 11. In brief: Although Samsung has not spoke of working on a 5G-capable tablet, the Korean electronics giant has posted a listing for a Galaxy Tab S6 5G on one of its webpages. No other details have emerged regarding the product, and it is unclear if the listing was intentional or put up on accident. As of this writing it has not been taken down. The Galaxy Tab S6 with WiFi and LTE launched a few months ago. With it came rumors of a 5G model. A listing for “Galaxy Tab S5 5G” appears on a promotional page of the South Korean version of the Samsung website. The page does not list any other information on the tablet, such as specs, release date, or price. It does use the same thumbnail as the LTE model, so perhaps the specs will be the same, but that could also simply be a placeholder. Other than that it just states, "Coming soon." Rumors of a 5G variant that Samsung might be working on surfaced in October. SamMobile notes that the device (model number SM-T866N) passed through the WiFi Alliance and the Bluetooth SIG. It was also speculated that the slate would be a Korean-only release. The LTE model has a Snapdragon 855 SoC, which is 5G capable as long as it has the supporting Qualcomm chips. So the likelihood of it being the same tablet with added 5G support is high, which is not a bad thing. The Tab S6 LTE scored favorably in most reviews earning it a TechSpot Metascore of 84. That version retails on Amazon for about $578. The 5G model will probably sell for a bit more. As usual, treat this as a rumor. Even though the new device was spotted on Samsung’s own website, the company has not officially unveiled anything. Anything could happen, so don’t get your hopes up. Cal, J. (2019, December 26). 12. Highly anticipated: Independent studio Crowbar Collective has gotten one step closer to a full release of its Black Mesa: Xen expansion. The developer soft-launched the title on Steam Early Access on Christmas Eve. While the game is still technically in beta, it is fully playable with about 10-15 hours of content. Crowbar Collective started as a group of Half-Life enthusiasts who set out to recreate Half-Life in HD. The effort initially titled Black Mesa: Source was launched as a free mod for Half-Life 2 in 2012. It was given a standalone release on Steam Early Access in 2015 but was missing the Xen chapters. Black Mesa: Xen not only adds in the alien world levels, but it also improves the Earth-based gameplay. It has enhanced visuals, new voice-overs, updated encounters, and stability fixes. The game has been available on the Steam beta branch for a while, but Crowbar felt it was time to put it into early access to gain more feedback and put on the finishing touches. “Early access gave us new tools and resources to better complete the game. We plan to fully utilize these resources even now that Xen is out,” said the developer. “We plan on doing a complete pass on the whole game for bugs and polish, then we will release out of Early Access.” It also notes that it will revisit the Earth-based levels before launch to ensure that they are looking and performing their best. Check out the patch notes for all the new and some of the upcoming changes. It hopes to graduate the game to a full release in early 2020. Black Mesa: Xen is available for Windows for $19.99. Crowbar Collective says it has no plans of increasing the price when the game exits Early Access. To celebrate the soft launch, Steam has the title on sale for $15.99 until January 2. Cal, J. 16. What just happened? Twitter has banned all animated PNGs (APNGs) from its platform to stop trolls using the images to trigger seizures in photosensitive people. The site has discovered a bug that lets users bypass its autoplay protections, allowing multiple animated images in a single tweet using the file format. “We want everyone to have a safe experience on Twitter,” the company said in a tweet. “APNGs were fun, but they don’t respect autoplay settings, so we’re removing the ability to add them to Tweets. This is for the safety of people with sensitivity to motion and flashing imagery, including those with epilepsy.” During November, which was National Epilepsy Awareness Month, the Epilepsy Foundation revealed that some Twitter users mentioned the organization and its hashtags in tweets that featured flashing or strobing images. It’s not clear how many people, if any, were affected by the attacks. While APNG files were not used in this case, Twitter has moved to make sure they aren’t utilized this way in the future. Back in 2017, a man was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after sending a journalist who has epilepsy a tweet containing a strobing GIF. Kurt Eichenwald had an eight-minute epileptic seizure after viewing the message and suffered from after-effects for several months. With most people using GIFs in their tweets, the change is unlikely to be noticed by the majority of users, and existing APNG files already uploaded to the site won’t be removed. Twitter says it is looking into “building a similar feature that’s better for you and your Twitter experience.” Rob, T. (2019, December 24).Twitter bans animated PNGs to protect epileptic users . 17. Forward-looking: It may seem like battery technology isn't improving as fast as our many devices, but IBM says the wait is almost over and worthwhile. Researchers are currently testing prototype pouch batteries that can outperform the best batteries we have today, while also being cheaper and safer. IBM's research arm may have found a way to replace traditional lithium-ion batteries with a new solution that is better and safer in almost every way. The new technology combines quick charging capabilities and low flammability with the distinct advantage of requiring materials that are plentiful and environmentally friendly. One of the biggest problems faced by today's industry is that demand is increasing faster than our ability to produce reliable batteries for mobile devices, power tools, cars, trucks and even airplanes. Everything is going electric, but the resources to make lithium-ion batteries -- heavy metals like manganese, cobalt, nickel -- require mining, which is harmful for the environment and the workers involved. IBM researchers say they have a solution that removes the need for nickel and cobalt to build the cathode, as well as a new liquid electrolyte that has a lower chance of igniting when something goes wrong thanks to a higher flash point. There's also a lower chance that these new batteries will form so-called lithium "dendrites" which lead to performance degradation and short circuits. If the safety features sound good, the performance is even more promising. Researchers explain they can tailor the new battery for various use cases thanks to its ability to outperform existing lithium-ion batteries. The current prototype pouch battery is able to reach an 80 percent charge in five minutes, and has an energy density of 800 Wh/L, something possible only with a state-of-the-art lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide battery. The new technology also holds potential for grid storage and electric vehicle applications, with a power density exceeding 10,000 W/L, which is better than what can be achieved with traditional battery chemistries. The longevity story is a little less clear, with IBM claiming "our battery demonstrated hundreds to thousands of cycles with 80 percent retention of its original capacity." Perhaps the best aspect of this new battery tech is that it's said to be considerably cheaper to manufacture at scale and that it doesn't require the use of conflict minerals. To that end, IBM Research is partnering with companies like Mercedes-Benz R&D, Sidus, and Central Glass. IBM says the three key materials needed to build the new battery can be extracted from seawater, which is why it's considered less damaging to the environment than terrestrial mining. Experts like MIT professor of materials science Donald Sadoway are skeptical, but IBM's materials innovation manager Young-hye Na is confident it can reach commercial viability in two years, with power tools as one of the first applications. In the meantime, several startups are emerging from stealth mode with silicon-based enhancements to current lithium-ion batteries and new methods to manufacture them as quickly and cheaply as possible. Whether or not IBM's battery is better, we don't have much longer to wait for it to show up in actual products. Adrian, P. (2019, December 24). IBM claims to have made a new battery design that is environment friendly. Retrieved from https://www.techspot.com/news/83312-ibm-claims-have-made-new-battery-design-environment.html

  21. TikTok, the video-sharing app that has boomed in po[CENSORED]rity, has had a tricky time of late. The app has faced lawsuits around its use of children’s data, allegations of political censorship, and is currently subject to an ongoing national security review from the US Committee on Foreign Investment. It may not come as a surprise therefore that the app has now been banned by the US Navy on personnel’s government-issued devices. The app has been deemed a “cybersecurity threat,” and Navy personnel were instructed to not install the app, or uninstall it if they already had it downloaded to a Navy device. Anyone not complying with the ban will not be able to access the Navy Marine Corps Intranet. The Navy has so far refused to clarify why TikTok has been categorized as such, but Lt. Col. Uriah Orland, spokesperson for the Pentagon, said that the action was taken as part of efforts to “address existing and emerging threats.” The nature of the penalty – blocking access to the Navy Marine Corps Intranet – may imply that the Pentagon has concerns about the TikTok app accessing other information on a user’s device, though this is purely speculation in lieu of further clarification from the Pentagon. What we do know is that this is just the latest in a string of tit-for-tat moves by the US and Chinese authorities to clamp-down on foreign-made technologies. The US has taken a tough stance on Chinese-made communications products and services – most notably in the case of Huawei – and earlier this month China’s Communist Party announced a directive to replace all government computer equipment with Chinese alternatives. 22. Something to look forward to: AMD’s upcoming Zen 2 Renoir APUs are now all but confirmed and will possibly appear very soon in up to 8-core, 16-thread configurations to give Intel a run for its money. Through the combination of 3DMark online benchmark results, early listings, and social media leaks we have a decent idea about the shape of the lineup. While Ryzen has plowed away Intel’s market share in the desktop space, AMD still faces an uphill battle in the laptop side. Current Zen+ APUs provide decent competition for Intel’s midrange mobile parts but AMD has little that can handle Intel on the wider ends of the performance spectrum. With Renoir, that could change. Let’s begin with something close to hard evidence: AMD, Acer, and HP have been testing at least four different 15W APUs on 3DMark, as one redditor found out. They have base clocks of 1.7 GHz, 1.8 GHz, 2 GHz and 2.4 GHz. Via a PCMark 10 results page we can see the 2 GHz model is an eight-core, eight-thread Ryzen 7 4700U, which could turbo up to 4.2 GHz. While it’s perhaps a little early to discuss performance, its score did beat out the 3700U by a tidy 18% and didn’t have much problem overtaking Intel’s Core i5 quad-core mobile parts. It couldn’t quite match Intel’s Core i7 hexa-core, though. The octa-core Ryzen 7 3700X uses less power than Intel's hexa-core Core i7-8700K while beating it by 31% in this test, and that power efficiency will translate into better battery life for laptops. Following that news, a user posted on Chinese forums that AMD was preparing two eight-core, sixteen thread chips: the Ryzen 9 4900H and Ryzen 9 4800H. He says they could challenge Intel’s octa-core i9-9980H, though that is a little bit optimistic. Using the names of the new processors Tom’s Hardware discovered Renoir-based laptop listings on Irish retailer Elara's site. Elara lists Asus laptops as containing the Ryzen 9 4800HS, Ryzen 5 4600HS and Ryzen 5 4600H. They’re also meant to be in stock on December 31, and given that OEMs have been testing the chips, it seems likely they’re close to actual release. AMD may be planning to announce them at CES 2020, which kicks off in early January. In short, AMD has a slew of shinier APUs. TSMC’s 7nm process and Zen 2 have already proven themselves to out-do Intel in power efficiency and application IPC (instructions per clock), and with the expected upgrade to eight cores, Renoir is showing a lot of promise. Isaiah, M. (2019, December 22). AMD's first octa-core APUs could be arriving soon. Retrieved from https://www.techspot.com/news/83292-amd-first-octa-core-apus-could-arriving-soon.html
