Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero will be canonized at the request of Pope Francis, who signed the decree recognizing the miracle attributed to the Salvadoran archbishop fulfilling the wishes of the faithful, for whom he was always "San Romero de América".
The condition of martyr was the one that found the most objections during this process, because for a more conservative sector of the Catholic Church, beatifying Romero would have been like taking the altars to the Theology of Liberation.
Other decrees were approved by Pope Francis and the prefect of the Congregation for the Cause of Saints, Cardinal Angelo Amato, as the canonization of Pope Paul VI.
Romero could be canonized in the Vatican along with Pope Paul VI at the end of next October in Rome, at the end of the Synod of Bishops on Youth, convened from October 3 to 28, Telesur said.
A canonization is also possible in El Salvador or in Panama in January 2019, where the Supreme Pontiff plans to travel for the World Youth Day.
The Salvadoran martyr Romero, was beatified on May 23, 2016 in the capital of El Salvador before hundreds of thousands of devotees and presidents of several countries gathered in the Salvador del Mundo plaza.
Monseñor Romero was characterized by promoting the defense of human rights. He constantly vindicated the displaced peasants, so the path of martyrdom was chosen by the Congregation of the Causes of the Saints to take him to the altars. He condemned the repression of the Salvadoran army during the civil war, for which reason he was assassinated in 1980 while celebrating the mass.
