Ascendant Studios pulled off an impressive reveal for its debut title, the first-person magic shooter Immortals of Aveum, due to be published by Electronic Arts under the EA Originals label. Today, the independent triple-A studio released nearly seven minutes of new gameplay, again showcasing the game's excellent graphics. At the same time, they also published a new blog post to detail the technology used during development. Immortals of Aveum is powered by Unreal Engine 5.1 and makes extensive use of the signature features: Lumen and Nanite. Regarding the latter, Chief Technology Officer Mark Maratea explained: In any other game, you might see what looks like a big craggy wall, but it’s actually flat with a craggy texture and maybe some shader trickery. We don’t have to do that; we actually build an object with all of that detail, and Nanite determines whether that detail shows up based on your distance. Senior Art Director Dave Bogan, on the other hand, talked about the impact Lumen had on lighting in Immortals of Aveum. Light not only hits characters and the environment and casts shadows, but it bounces off of them as well, picking up the color and allowing that to be seen in nearby static and dynamic objects. Lumen does this efficiently enough that we can add in other supporting lights and volumetrics to make the environment really lush and atmospheric. Unfortunately, all of that goodness comes at a cost. Ascendant Studios also shared the current PC system requirements for their game, and they're really high compared to what we're used to. However, they said the requirements might change as the optimization process goes on, hopefully lowering them a bit. Immortals of Aveum is scheduled to hit PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, EA app), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X on July 20th. It will be fully localized in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Japanese, while Polish, Brazilian PT, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Mexican Spanish will get subtitles. Before Elon Musk joined Twitter, the platform offered a Blue verification badge for accounts highlighting their authenticity. The badge was reserved for notable organizations, celebrities, government officials, and other famous personalities. Under Elon Musk, the verification badge was made available to anyone who offered to pay a small subscription fee. It was previously reported that the company would remove the blue verification badge from all non-paying accounts that were originally verified. Now, almost anyone can gain access to the checkmark as long as they are happily paying a small subscription fee. With the blue badge gone for 'legacy' accounts, the verification would lose its purpose. Since anyone can pay for a subscription, the authenticity of accounts would be put into question. After tomorrow, all accounts with a blue check next to their name will be distinguished as paying subscribers. The rest of the accounts would only show the name. While it might be good for business, the criteria to judge information will be lost. Accounts are advised to subscribe to Twitter's verification if they wish to retain their status. As mentioned earlier, the change will take place tomorrow, April 20. There will be no way to tell if the information being shared on the platform is real or fake as it does not correspond to the credibility of the blue badge that had to be earned. The company could introduce new features to the mix to fix the issue, but for now, the focus is gaining new subscribers. if you have subscribed to the Twitter Blue service, the company offers some unique features that non-paying subscribers do not have access to. For instance, paying subscribers can write longer tweets with a new 10,000-character limit that turns concise information pieces into essays. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX A2000 SFF graphics card has been custom modded by a user at the SFF.Network with a passive heatsink. Custom Modded NVIDIA RTX A2000 SFF Graphics Card With Passive Cooler Runs Just As Good & Quiet User REVOCCASES on the website SFF.Network (smallformfactor.net) modded the NVIDIA RTX A2000 graphics card which he terms the KalmX edition, a callback to the Palit GTX 1650 KalmX edition which featured a passive heatsink. Since there's no official passive-heatsink for the NVIDIA RTX A2000, the modder decided to use the Arctic ACCELERO S1 R2 cooler, and an additional CNC machined copper plate for the design. The card measures 135mm x 220mm and offers two slots on one end. A custom baseplate had to be made to allow compatibility with the NVIDIA RTX A2000 graphics card. As for the NVIDIA RTX A2000 itself, it is one of the smallest workstation graphics cards that is based on the GA106 GPU with 3,328 CUDA cores and has a 6 GB 192-bit memory interface. The card sips in just 70W of power but with a custom V/C curve, the modder was able to get around 1500 MHz at just 750mV. t works great! [E]ven at stock settings it does not throttle and performs just as good as with the noisy stock cooler. For best (passive-) cooling and performance however, it would be ideal to place the GPU in a traditional layout case to support natural airflow trough the fins and adjust the V/C curve in afterburner to something like 1500 Mhz @ 750mV. As for temperatures, the passively-modded NVIDIA RTX A2000 graphics card was able to sit between 65-75C temperatures which is really good for a small design such as this card but most importantly, the card performs just as well as it did with its stock active cooler but minus the loud noise that the blower cooler produced. That's a win-win but we have to keep in mind that this can not be done by standard consumers as custom-modding a heatsink and a stock graphics card does require some form of expertise. A few hours ago, modder PureDark shared a brief DLSS 3 mod The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video showcase on YouTube, demonstrating the work-in-progress of his DLSS Frame Generation implementation into The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. As covered in our previous report, PureDark was initially testing a DLSS 3 mod in Elden Ring, but there were several issues with that implementation. To get a better understanding of what was going wrong with it, the modder decided to implement DLSS Frame Generation in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim since he has a lot of experience with the Creation Engine, having previously released DLSS 2 (Super Resolution) mods for both Skyrim and Fallout 4. In the test video, the DLSS 3 mod doubles the frame rate of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim compared to using only DLSS Super Resolution. The modder also showed a built-in tool to simulate additional CPU load as a test for those configurations that might be bottlenecked by the CPU. Those are the cases that DLSS Frame Generation was designed to overcome since it creates entirely new frames without even passing from the CPU. The chief example was Microsoft Flight Simulator, which didn't get any meaningful improvement with DLSS Super Resolution but has its frame rate doubled when using DLSS Frame Generation. The issue with Reflex remains, though, so the latency isn't properly lowered at this time. PureDark signaled the problem on NVIDIA's Streamline GitHub; we've also forwarded it to NVIDIA PR, so hopefully, it'll get escalated and resolved sooner than later. This first DLSS 3 mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim could open the way to many more, starting with the Elden Ring one. All of this modding work is possible thanks to NVIDIA's decision to publically share the plugin as part of the Streamline SDK update that became available at the recent Game Developers Conference 2023. DLSS 3 is already receiving an extremely fast adoption rate compared to other upscaling technologies (including its sibling DLSS 2), but it is unlikely it will ever be added to an already-released game. That's why DLSS 3 mods can greatly increase the mileage that GeForce RTX 40 Series owners get out of their graphics cards, the only ones to support Frame Generation at this time. The technology is based on the Optical Flow Accelerators, which are also available in previous RTX generations. NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4060 Ti custom models have started popping up in online databases & we now know the clock speeds of one such model. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Custom Models Show Up With Up To 2580 MHz Clocks, Performance Should Be On Par With RTX 3070 Ti The clock speeds come from TechPowerUp's GPU Database editor, T4C Fantasy, who has shared the specifications for Colorful's iGame GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Ultra W OC graphics card. This model features a custom design that includes a non-reference PCB and cooling solution and comes with factory overclocks of up to 2580 MHz which is a 45 MHz boost over the reference clock speeds. It looks like the overclocks won't be as big as we saw with the RTX 4070 variants but your games will still be able to squeeze in some extra performance. Other than that, T4C Fantasy also reports that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is still showing up with 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM. While that might change, earlier rumors have pointed to 8 GB and if that really ends up being the case, it will be kind of a letdown considering the RTX 3060 had 12 GB of GDDR6 VRAM and while the 3060 Ti went with 8 GB, it didn't have its bus interface at 128-bit. Both last-gen 3060 series cards featured 192 and 256-bit bus interfaces respectively. A 128-bit solution on the RTX 4060 series would suggest that they will most definitely be targeting 1080p gamers and the extra cache might compensate for some form of entry-level 1440p gaming on the Ti variant. The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is expected to utilize the AD106-350-A1 GPU core, a cut-down version of the full AD106 graphics chip, and based on rumors, it should pack 34 SMs or 4352 CUDA cores, an 8 GB GDDR6 memory running at 18 Gbps across a 128-bit bus interface, providing the card with 288 GB/s of bandwidth. There's also 32 MB of L2 cache on board the GPU which is an 8x increase over the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. Using the rumored "reference" boost frequency as a reference, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti should offer around 22 TFLOPs of compute performance with AIB models boosting it close to 24 TFLOPs. Based on the numbers above, it looks like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti graphics card is going to end up similar to the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti in performance. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been out for just over a week now, and while critical opinion is somewhat split, the movie is a runaway success at the box office. With only nine days of returns, Variety reports that Mario and friends have already raked in $500 million at the box office (around $260 million in North America and $248 million in the rest of the world). The movie is the highest-grossing film of 2023 thus far, bumping off Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Perhaps a bigger deal, is the fact that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now the most successful video game movie adaptation of all time. The previous record-holder was the Warcraft movie (remember that?) which brought in $439 million. Other high-earners included Detective Pikachu ($433 million) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($403 million). As you can see, in the past, even successful video game movies seemed to struggle to surge beyond that low-400-million range, but Mario’s left it in the dust. In fact, the Mario movie is currently trending ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water domestically, which made “only” $231 million in North America in its first nine days. So, what can we attribute The Super Mario Movie’s massive success to? While some have found the film unambitious, and (in the words of Wccftech’s own Ule Lopez) “average at best,” I think its predictability is part of its success. Nintendo and Universal promised a faithful version of the characters and world millions of kids and adults alike love, and they delivered. And make no mistake, there’s nothing “lazy” about the Mario movie – it took six years to make with Shigeru Miyamoto himself being involved in the entire process. The end result is something a 30-or-40-something parent can go watch with their kids and enjoy on the same uncomplicated level. Yeah, the movie’s not perfect, but when it’s just a straightforward, hyped-up, cinematic version of that almost-universally-appealing Mario action, it’s a lot of fun. Bethesda and Tango Gameworks have essentially relaunched Ghostwire: Tokyo, releasing on Xbox Series X/S (it was previously PS5 console exclusive) alongside the “Spider’s Thread” update. Unfortunately, the update includes a less-than-thrilling new “feature” on PC – Denuvo anti-tamper has been added to the game. Players digging around in the Ghostwire: Tokyo executable file picked up that Denuvo had likely been added to the game, and Bethesda would later confirm it, adding an official warning on the game’s Steam page. Ghostwire: Tokyo wasn’t exactly known for its stellar PC optimization to begin with, so hopefully Denuvo doesn’t have too much of a negative impact on performance. It seems Bethesda is going all-in on the anti-tamper tech, as the upcoming Redfall will have it as well. For those who haven’t been keeping up, the Ghostwire: Tokyo Spider’s Thread update adds a number of new features, including new abilities and enemies, but the headline bullet points are the titular Spider’s Thread gauntlet mode and new story beats. Well, it seems like there was a round of controversy that happened for the Ark: Survival Ascended upgrade that'll be part of Ark: Survival Evolved. Recently, Studio Wildcard announced that it would release the remaster of the game in Unreal Engine 5 with Ark 2. However, this practice sparked a backlash from the Ark community, causing Studio Wildcard to return to the drawing board and propose a new solution. During a new community update, Studio Wildcard talked about how they took the feedback from the community and stated that the original intention behind this bundle was to provide a package where players would get two products for the price of one. Unfortunately, that doesn't jive with the Ark community in this case, as combining Ark: Survival Ascended with Ark 2 while requiring further DLC upgrades would be a terrible idea. So, instead, Studio Wildcard will now offer Ark: Survival Ascended as a standalone package released on every platform for $59.99. While the game will no longer include Ark 2, it will include the following pieces of content built-in: The Island (Released at Launch) Survival of the Fittest: The Island & Scorched Earth map variants (Released at Launch) Scorched Earth (Released at Launch) Aberration (Released by Q4 2023) Extinction (Released by Q1 2024) Genesis Part 1 (Released by Q1 2024) Genesis Part 2 (Released by Q2 2024) Each of the contents of the package will be remastered and altered for the next generation of consoles. In the blog post, the studio stated the following: Initially, when we had first considered doing an Unreal 5 upgrade, we planned just to port the Switch version of the game and undo the ‘graphical’ limitations required for that hardware. [...] After carefully considering what would be the best outcome for those who enjoy ARK: Survival Evolved and would want to continue to enjoy it in the years to come, we decided that our initial plan would not be sufficient. We weren’t trying to mislead you with earlier comments; our plans and overall intentions changed. [...] Many of the changes we’re making in ARK: Survival Ascended will touch a lot of aspects of the game; it’ll invalidate save data, some mods may not be functional, some things may not play the same way as they did before, and we didn’t want to change that experience for those who prefer it or are unable to upgrade. It's still confusing how this will quell the rage that has been building against Studio Wildcard after they essentially removed the addition of a game that got delayed to 2024 and instead added a bunch of DLC... But that seems to be the solution for now... At least until the studio gets strong-armed into thinking of a better one by the community again.
