  1. Foxconn, a Taiwanese electronics firm that is one of the main manufacturers of Apple iPhones, is planning to enter the automotive space with the Foxtron Model B. A full reveal of the Model B is coming on October 18, but Foxconn has already given a good look at the hatchback’s Pininfarina-penned exterior design. Initial production of the Model B will take place in China next year, but the company says that the hatchback will be built at Foxconn’s Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant starting in 2024. UPDATE 10/28/22: A Foxconn representative told Car and Driver that although the electronics company has said it will build several electric vehicles at its Lordstown, Ohio plant, it has not publicly said where the Model B will be produced. However, Foxconn did not explicitly rule out production in the United States in its statement. You might not be familiar with the name Foxconn, but you certainly know its biggest product: the Taiwanese electronics company is one of the leading iPhone manufacturers. The firm is also looking to expand into the automotive space. In 2021, Foxconn purchased the Lordstown assembly plant in Ohio from struggling EV startup Lordstown Motors. Now Foxconn has given the first look at a new electric hatchback, the Foxtron Model B, that it plans to eventually build in the United States. Foxconn has provided minimal information so far about the Model B, with the EV set to be fully unveiled on October 18. You may have noticed that the brand name associated with the Model B is not Foxconn, but Foxtron—this vehicle is part of a joint venture between the electronics maker and Yulon Motor, Taiwan’s largest automaker which has built Nissans under license for decades and also created its own brand, Luxgen. While Foxconn is tight-lipped about specifications, the video does show off the Model B’s design, which was penned by Italian design house Pininfarina. The compact car has its large, flashy wheels pushed out the corners, while the front and rear ends are dominated by full-width LED light bars. The smooth bodywork is accentuated by a stylized C-pillar, and a unique feature in the taillights appears to display images to communicate with pedestrians. The Model B will ride on Foxconn’s open-source MiH platform—which stands for Mobility in Harmony. The platform will also underpin two additional models previously revealed by Foxconn, the Model C, a larger crossover, and Model E, a luxury sedan. The platform supports single and dual-motor setups, and Foxconn claims a range of 435 miles from the Model C and 466 miles for the Model E. Foxconn is aiming to initially start building the Model B in China in 2023, but will eventually start production of the vehicle in 2024 at the Lordstown plant, which formerly produced the Chevy Cruze. It’s unclear if the Model B will be offered in the U.S. The plant is apparently configured to churn out to 500,000 vehicles a year, and Foxconn plans to also build the Lordstown Endurance and Fisker’s upcoming Pear crossover at the plant under contract as well. While it would great to see the factory up and running again, we remain skeptical of Foxconn’s ability to follow through on its automotive ambitions. Foxconn previously pledged to invest $10 billion in a massive display panel manufacturing plant in the small town of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, originally touting the creation of 13,000 jobs and production starting in 2020. Five years later, only a few buildings have been completed, little has been produced, and the investment has been reduced to $672 million with only 1454 new jobs.
  2. Rabat - Morocco’s fertilizer giant OCP Group recorded the best turnover in 2021 compared to other Moroccan firms. With MAD 84.3 billion ($7.7 billion) in turnover, OCP topped the ranking of the 500 largest Moroccan companies, according to data reported by the country’s state press agency (MAP). Coming on the heels of OCP Group is Renault Group, with a turnover of MAD 40.8 billion ($3.7 billion), closely followed by utilities company the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) in third place, with a turnover of 39.2 billion dirhams ($3.6 billion). The list of the top 10 best-performing companies equally includes Maroc Telecom with a turnover of MAD 36 billion ($3.3 billion), oil company, Afriquia Smdc with MAD 18.7 billion ($1.7 billion), and retail company Marjane Holding at 13.9 billion ($1.2 billion). The top 10 of the ranking feature two more energy companies in the sixth and seventh position with Vivo Energy Maroc recording a turnover of MAD 12.9 billion ($1.1 billion), and TotalEnergies Marketing Maroc MAD 12.9 billion ($1.1 billion). Retail company Label'Vie came in the ninth position with a turnover of roughly MAD 11.8 billion ($1 billion) and Societe Marocaine des Tabacs came in 10th place with MAD 9.3 billion (MAD 848.8 million). While the strong results from these companies reflect a mature economy, recent data from the Moroccan Observatory for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises indicates otherwise. In their annual report, the observatory revealed that as of 2021, 90% of Moroccan businesses are small in size, 9% are medium-sized, and only 1% qualify as large-sized businesses. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/10/352113/ocp-reports-best-turnover-in-ranking-of-500-largest-moroccan-companies
  3. Rabat - Morocco’s cultural capital Rabat is hosting the first edition of Jassad, the International Festival of Women Directors, between October 25 and 30. The event aims to highlight and pay tribute to the achievements of women theater directors from across the world. Organized by Morocco’s Aquarium Theater and Anfass Theater, the festival will feature renowned women directors from Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, Spain, France, Denmark, and Romania. “Through this festival, we wish to establish a ritual of recognition towards all the creative women who serve the theater,” said Amsaa Houri, director of Anfass Theater. The six-day event also aims to “strengthen the resilience and hope of women actors in the cultural and creative industry, at a time when the sector has been seriously affected by the Covid-19 pandemic,” Houri added. The festival serves as a platform for cultural and artistic exchanges, as its program offers a wide range of activities, including plays, a master class, workshops, as well as meetings and debates, indicated the organizers in a press release. Director of Aquarium Theater Naima Zitan described the festival as “a meeting, an exchange, a discovery, all this and a little more,” explaining that the event is dedicated to theatrical creation, as well as exchanging ideas, experiences, and different visions of the world. “The Jassad (meaning body in Arabic) is what unites us, wearing a festive hat to welcome and greet a vast and colorful audience,” Zitan said. Read also: Israeli Theater Group To Perform in Morocco for First Time The festival will feature various theatrical pieces, including Naima Zitan’s “Le Masque” (The Mask), Asmaa Houri’s “Automne” (Autumn), as well as “Joyeux Anniversaire” (Happy Birthday) by Morocco’s Fatima Zohra Lahouitar and “Boujloud” by French-Moroccan Kenza Berrada. The six-day event will also feature “Nawal” by Lebanon's Lina Abyad, “Heimat Wort” by Tunisia’s Meriam Bousselmi, “Enlorquecidas” by Spain’s Marta Ocana, and “Une Maison de Poupee” by France's Lorraine de Sagazan. In addition, the event will include a seminar titled “Profession: Woman of Theater,” featuring Morocco’s Zohra Makac and Omar Ferhat, Lebanese director and theater professor Lina Abyad, and Denmark’s theater actress Julia Varley. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/10/352082/first-edition-of-moroccos-jassad-festival-honors-women-theater-directors
  4. Rabat - The Head of Vox’s Delegation to the European Parliament Jorge Buxade has denounced the recently-approved EU grant for the modernization of Morocco’s agriculture and forestry sectors, arguing that the aid is “a mockery” for Spanish farmers. On Tuesday, the European Commission allocated €115 million to support the development of Morocco’s agricultural and forestry sectors in line with the country’s “Green Generation” and “Moroccan forests” strategies. The “indecent” grant, Buxade argued on Thursday, is making Spanish farmers abandon their agricultural activities, leaving the continent’s food security in the hands of partners such as Morocco and Turkey. The MEP further argued that the increase in production costs and “the thousands of environmental obligations” imposed on Spanish farmers have put the local agricultural ecosystem in a disadvantageous position compared to imports from countries such as Morocco. Read Also: European Trade Commission Approves Imports of Moroccan Poultry The Vox member accused the Spanish government of “hypocrisy,” stressing that the previous governments have been indifferent to the situation of the “Spanish countryside for years." “We are not going to stop until we stop this hypocrisy,” the politician said in a message aimed at Spanish farmers, adding that his party would always protect the farmers and ranchers who “guarantee” the country’s “food sovereignty.” Bruxade’s comments add to a series of European complaints against the importation of Moroccan agricultural products. For years, European farmers have claimed that Moroccan vegetables and fruits exported to the EU do not comply with regional quality standards. These allegations seek to protect local production from foreign competition. The ongoing economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a series of heatwaves, and rising fertilizer and energy prices have further fueled political opposition to Moroccan goods, particularly in Spain and France. In this context, some European agricultural producers are planning to relocate their production south to Morocco, in order to benefit from the country’s warm weather and experienced harvest workers. Every year, Morocco sends thousands of seasonal workers to European fields ahead of the harvest season. In September, CEO of the British Growers Association Jack Ward told Reuters that the European production of fruit and vegetables “will move further and further south, down through Spain and into Morocco and bits of Africa." Ward cited rising production costs as one of the main reasons for this move. With energy bills and fertilizer prices reaching new highs over the past months, some farmers in France, Spain, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands have opted to not use their greenhouses this season in order to cut costs. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/10/352109/spains-vox-party-denounces-eu-support-for-moroccan-agriculture
  5. Earlier this month, we heard that Blizzard wasn’t going to be making any major balance changes to Overwatch 2 until the launch of Season 2, despite some fairly major issues following the game’s move to 5v5. Well, it seems that’s changed. Today, Blizzard announced a number of key nerfs are coming for heroes like Genji, Sombra, D.va, Zarya, and Kiriko in mid-November. You can check out the changes coming, below. Hack ability lockout duration reduced from 1.75 to 1.5 seconds Hacked enemies are no longer valid targets for hacking for the duration of the effect Hacked damage multiplier reduced from 40 to 25% Dev Comment: With Sombra’s rework, she gained a lot more damage to help account for the reduced ability lockout duration of Hack. This has proven to be too deadly for a flanker with easy access to the enemy backlines. She can also no longer channel hack on an already hacked target as feedback indicated the reduced cooldown combined with hacking from stealth proved to be too frustrating for many players. Genji Maximum ammo reduced from 30 to 24 Shuriken damage reduced from 29 to 27 Dev Comment: Genji is a Hero that has greatly benefited from the move to 5v5. Changing to a single Tank and the reduction of crowd control has meant Genji has had less obstacles in his way, however he hasn’t received tuning updates since he wasn’t actively in the meta until launch (something also informed by our general preference to avoid preemptive adjustments when possible). We also saw that, in early beta tests, other flanking Heroes such as Tracer and Reaper were also significantly more effective in OW2. These changes will bring Genji more in line with the other flanking damage heroes. Zarya Barrier duration reduced from 2.5 to 2 seconds Barrier cooldown increased from 10 to 11 seconds Dev Comment: Early player sentiment predicted Zarya as one of the weakest solo tanks in 5v5 though her high damage potential and barrier uptime have proven to be extremely effective. For opponents, feedback has indicated this can feel as though Zarya has very limited windows of vulnerability, which feels difficult to deal with when combined with her ramping damage potential. These changes will reduce the barrier uptime, making it slightly more difficult for her to gain energy and will provide enemies with more time to deal damage to her. D.va usion Cannon spread increased from 3.5 to 3.75 Boosters impact damage reduced from 25 to 15 Dev Comment: D.va ended up feeling too deadly after the last round of changes given how resilient she can be with the improved Defense Matrix. Both our stats and high-level player feedback regarded her as not effective enough before that compared with other tanks, so this is a partial revert to establish some middle ground there. Kiriko Swift Step invulnerability duration reduced from 0.4 to 0.25 seconds Dev Comment: This invulnerability window is primarily intended to help avoid instantly dying to something unseen after teleporting through walls, but it ended up being a little too long and led to some confusion when shooting at Kiriko Some interesting choices for nerfs here. While Genji nerfs have been a common request, players have also been complaining about new hero Sojourn, and she’s going unaddressed here. Also, hey, buffs are still things characters can get sometimes, right? Right? Activision Blizzard has faced a series of lawsuits and other legal action on the heels of a suit filed by California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) alleging widespread gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment at the Call of Duty publisher. You can get more details on that unfolding story here. https://wccftech.com/overwatch-2-balance-patch-november-nerf-genji-sombra-d-va-zarya-kiriko/

  7. AMD's Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs come in two flavors, one with a single CCD design and the higher core count variants with dual Zen 4 CCDs. However, it looks like AMD might be shipping some AM5 Ryzen 5 & Ryzen 7 chips with two CCDs. AMD Ryzen 5 7600X CPU Spotted With Dual Zen 4 CCDs, Defective Ryzen 9 Chips or Actually Usable? Recently, Der8auer posted a video showcasing his latest Delid Die Mate which can be used to delid the AMD Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs if you plan on using direct-die cooling. The overclocker used a Thermal Grizzly Direct Die Frame for this demonstration but upon delidding the Ryzen 5 7600X, an interesting discovery was made. As soon as the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X CPU was delidded, Der8auer noticed that it featured two Zen 4 CCDs instead of one. The 7600X features 6 cores and 12 threads so it doesn't need the extra CCD. All AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs below the Ryzen 9 segment make use of a single CCD so it's definitely a bit interesting to see a dual Zen 4 CCD implementation on the PCB. Since the chip was already delidded, Der8auer put the chip under a thermal probe and checked to see if the other Zen 4 CCD was active or not. Three tiny copper blocks were used that say on each chiplet (two Zen 4 CCDs and a single IOD). When booted, only the IO die, & a single Zen 4 CCD was shown to be active since they started producing heat. This means that the other die is not running. So that brings us to the question as to why there are two Zen 4 CCDs on this particular AMD Ryzen 5 7600X CPU. There could be two reasons, first and foremost, AMD may simply be using defective Ryzen 9 chips that only have one working Zen 4 CCD and labeling them as Ryzen 5 & Ryzen 7 parts. This would suggest that the other die is totally defective and not usable. But there is also a small possibility that this die could've been artificially locked and there might be a bypass to enable it. It is known that AMD locks several features of its chips artificially such as the Ryzen 7 5800X3D OC that would soon be overcome. But actually enabling a whole CCD won't be as simple as it looks & even if this was a functional die, it would take someone with a lot of experience to bypass this. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see AMD shipping dual Zen 4 CCDs on some of its Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 chips. There could be a lot more chips out there but unless you are delidding them (an actual risk that voids the warranty), you'll never know what lies under the hood of your CPU.

  10. Rabat - After Ukraine and Albania, Morocco ranked third on the list of the top 10 receivers of residence permits in Italy last year. According to data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat), “for every 100 resident foreigners, there are respectively 52 new citizens of Albanian origin and 44 of Moroccan origin,” noting that “the average value for non-EU citizens is just over 32 new citizens for every 100 foreigners.” In its report on “non-European citizens in Italy 2021-2022,” the institution also found that for all the top 10 foreign communities in the country, the main reason for entering Italy is family reunification, which accounted for over 73% of Moroccan entries in 2021. In January last year, nearly 1.5 million citizens of foreign origin acquired Italian citizenship, more than 83% of which are non-European citizens, the report highlighted. Women account for 56% of the total, with 18% being Albanian and 15.5% being Moroccan, the statistics showed, adding that other origins did not exceed 4%. Read also: Moroccans Are Top Receivers of Residency Permits in France, Spain, Belgium The report also noted that 159,000 applications for temporary protection were filed at the end of September, while acquisitions of citizenship decreased by 8% between 2020 and 2021. The figures also revealed that new citizens are concentrated in six Center-North regions in Italy, including Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Piedmont, Lazio, and Tuscany. At the beginning of 2021, they housed 73.5% of people who got Italian nationality and resided permanently in the country. According to the report, 241,595 residence permits were awarded last year in the country, up 135,000 from 2020. Despite a considerable increase in work permits, the report found that flows have returned to pre-pandemic levels, but there has been no meaningful recovery. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/10/352075/moroccans-among-top-receivers-of-residence-permits-in-italy-in-2021
  11. For the 2022 SEMA show, Nissan is presenting a 1987 Sunny pickup with an EV conversion done by Tommy Pike Customs. The Sunny now utilizes the 40-kWh battery and 147-hp electric motor from a Nissan Leaf. Completing the Leaf-powered Sunny's look are 17-inch Rotiform wheels, a widebody kit, and a livery inspired by 1970s Datsun race cars. At last year's Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, Ford revealed the F-100 Eluminator concept, a 1978 pickup retrofitted with two electric motors from the Mustang Mach-E GT that married old-school looks with 480 horsepower and 634 pound-feet of torque. For the 2022 edition of SEMA, Nissan follows a similar path, electrifying a classic truck design, albeit with much less power, by shoving a Nissan Leaf powertrain into a 1987 Sunny. The truck, modified by South Carolina–based Tommy Pike Customs, uses a 40-kWh lithium-ion battery from a base Leaf S, paired with the single motor that's good for 147 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. That may not sound like a lot, but the Sunny is a small vehicle, and it has approximately twice as much power and three times as much torque as the car's original gas engine produced. Nissan doesn't say where the electric motor is mounted on the Sunny, but we hope it powers the rear wheels. The electrified pickup apparently retains the original manual transmission too, although Nissan doesn't explain exactly how that works. It also receives the front suspension from a first-generation Nissan 240SX, along with heavy-duty rear leaf springs. The Sunny looks fantastic thanks to a wide-body kit that accentuates its squared-off design, as well as a red, white, and blue livery that pays homage to Datsuns raced by Brock Racing Enterprises in the 1970s. LED headlights give the '80s classic a modern look, while the 17-inch Rotiform wheels take inspiration from vintage motorsports. For now, the Leaf-powered Sunny remains a one-off, but maybe Nissan will start offering electric crate motors similar to what Ford does with its Eluminator powertrain. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a41802749/1987-nissan-sunny-pickup-truck-leaf-ev-sema/
  12. Rabat - The Morocco-Sweden Advisory Business Council, which aims to promote relations and exchange of expertise between business communities in the two countries, was officially launched in Stockholm on Wednesday. The objective of the Advisory Business Council is to "promote economic, commercial, financial, technological, professional and cultural relations, and the friendship between the business communities in both countries, but also in their respective development areas." Morocco’s Ambassador to Sweden and Latvia Karim Medrek said that the current international environment suggests that the imperative is to strengthen the existing cooperation between the two countries and develop new ones, in order to reflect together on common solutions, through the exchange of experiences and expertise and the linking of innovation ecosystems. "We attach particular interest to the creation of a business advisory council, which will be able to allow the establishment of new and concrete cooperation between the companies of our two countries," said Medrek. The ambassador noted that the economies of both countries have similar concerns for the development of certain industrial sectors. Many opportunities are available for the launch of economic partnerships in areas related to renewable energy, green economy, new technologies, artificial intelligence, and many more. After recalling that Morocco is positioned as the first investor in West Africa, and the second African investor on the continent through a multitude of structuring projects, Medrek noted that several Moroccan companies in various sectors are involved in the policy of continental economic expansion. The next step of the board would be to organize a visit to Morocco to explore all the business opportunities and investment that the country has to offer. The council would also organize several meetings with professionals in the economic sector, which may lead to institutional partnership projects, new business opportunities, or joint research protocols. Businessman and former Swedish Minister of Employment Sven Otto Julius Littorin said he was "proud" of the council’s launch. According to him, the launch will identify, in a non-limitative way, global trade sectors that the Moroccan and Swedish operators could develop in common, namely infrastructure, hydrocarbons, renewable energy, sustainable development, health, and education. Littorin noted that the council will create synergies and channels of communication between Moroccan and Swedish companies, promote the exchange of expertise and know-how, and promote investment and co-investment in sectors of common interest. Member of the board of directors of Swedish technology companies Linda Nyberg highlighted that the council is a "new step" in strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries. This cooperation "can only contribute to the strengthening of investment projects, especially in the technology sector, which is developing more and more in Morocco," she explained. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/10/352088/morocco-sweden-advisory-business-council-launches-in-stockholm
  13. October has been designated breast cancer awareness month, a time where efforts are accelerated to raise awareness about the disease, highlight the importance of early identification, and recognize the signs and symptoms to watch out for. According to the World Health Organization, 90% of early-stage breast cancers are curable, and the treatments are often able to conserve the breast. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women: one in 8 women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. It is also the leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Morocco World News (MWN) had the opportunity to speak with Professor Hachi Hafid, General Surgery Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Rabat and Head of the surgical gynecological and mammary cancer department at the National Institute of Oncology (INO). Dr. Hafid answered some of the most common questions regarding the cancer, and gave advice for early identification and treatment. Risk factors According to Hafid, breast cancer is common among women between 50 to 69 years old who represent 50% of people with the disease. In recent years, it has also been affecting the younger population with 30% of cases occurring before the age of 50, 10% of which occur before the age of 35. As explained by him, several risk factors can increase the chance of developing breast cancer, like radiation exposure. "Radiation exposure in young patients who received chest radiotherapy to treat Hodgkin's lymphoma have a high risk of developing breast cancer;" the professor suggests. It has also been documented that family history of breast cancer is a risk factor. "20 to 30% of breast cancers take on a family character[with] several cases in the family,” Hafid explains. Read also: Swedish Institute: Morocco Has Highest Cancer Mortality Rate in 9 MENA Countries He goes on to detail that the presence of the cancer in a first-degree relative (parent, sibling, child) and the occurrence in an individual younger than 50 years old multiply the risk twofold. Genetic predisposition can also raise the risk significantly. "5 to 10% of cancers are hereditary due to genetic mutations involving genes called BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 and other mutations,” Hafid says. “The presence of a mutation does not mean inevitable breast cancer, but it highly increases the risk." Male breast cancer Male breast cancer is very rare, and represents around 1% of breast cancers, the professor says. “It occurs mostly in males older than 60 years, who have relatives with breast cancer,” he said, noting that 15% of cases were associated with hereditary factors. Screening is vital Breast cancer screening means checking for the cancer before it causes signs and symptoms. The goal is to find it in an early stage where it may still be treated. A national program to perform systematic mammograms for patients aged 50 to 74 years aims to diagnose small and malignant lesions that are less than 1 cm in size, Hafid explains. According to the doctor, early detection drastically improves the prognosis of breast cancer and allows nine out of 10 patients to recover. "Individuals with a personal or family history of breast cancer or hereditary predispositions must undergo rigorous monitoring and control because these patients are at high risk of breast cancer," he adds. When to undergo screening? Hafid recommended that all women carry out a self-examination of their breasts by first inspecting the area in search of abnormalities or lesions that recently appeared such as a nodule, redness, or change in the areola. Next, self-palpation in search of hard nodules or suspicious lumps is a good step. “Any abnormality observed or palpated should encourage the patient to consult a gynecologist," Hafid says. According to him, breast cancer can be suspected clinically and the diagnosis can be made after a mammogram which might reveal suspicious microcalcifications in the screening. After the diagnosis, "advanced medical tests will be done to track the extension of the tumor," the doctor adds. A positive cancer diagnosis According to Hafid, the management of a positive cancer diagnosis must be multidisciplinary in nature, bringing together the surgeon, the oncologist, and the radiotherapist. Any decisions with regards to treatment must be taken after consultation with all the specialists. While surgery is one of the primary treatments for breast cancer, Hafid says that "conservative treatment is the option that should be advocated for if there are favorable conditions.” Read also: Dostarlimab, First Treatment to ‘Completely Eliminate Cancer’ Conservative treatments have the advantage of respecting the patient's body image and avoiding mastectomy, which can negatively impact mental health. In certain situations when mastectomy is necessary, the patient must be offered breast reconstruction. Radiotherapy is also often performed at the end of therapeutic sequences to strengthen local control of the disease." the doctor explained. Hope for the future Breast cancer awareness campaigns are educating on the importance of regular screenings to detect cancer in its early stage. They are also helping to raise funds to finance advanced research. "Medical oncology has been strengthened by targeted therapies and immunotherapy,” Hafid summarizes. “Radiotherapy uses innovative techniques to comfort local control and reduce sequelae.” https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/10/352093/breast-cancer-symptoms-screenings-and-treatments
  14. Rabat - Chinese technology giant Huawei renewed its commitment to boost digital transformation in Morocco by providing a range of technological solutions and services to the public and private sectors in addition to training local talent in the fields of big data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and coding. Huawei opened its first office in Morocco in 2002. Since then, it has “created 8,000 local jobs with 80% of local employees [and] a fiscal tax contribution of $35 million,” Chief Brand Officer at Huawei Technologies Maroc Nabil Ouchagour told Morocco World News (MWN) during the sixth edition of AUSIM Conference. Organized under the theme “Digital Nation: Unleash the Potential,” the event, scheduled for October 26-28 in Marrakech, featured Huawei as a “Diamond” partner, and provided a platform for the Chinese corporation to exhibit its recent innovations as well as highlighting its efforts to help Morocco become a “digital nation.” As Morocco aspires to serve as a leading digital hub in Africa, Ouchagour stressed that the country needs to develop its “connectivity capacity, computing capacity, decarbonization [efforts], and talent.” Supporting Morocco’s digital transformation Echoing Ouchagour’s sentiment, Deputy General Manager of Huawei Morocco Faustin Xu reiterated the company’s “commitment to creating a solid and lasting impact by leveraging innovation and collaboration.” Huawei’s vision for a global digital transformation overlaps with initiatives that Morocco launched, aiming to turn the country into a digital hub for Africa with a strong and exemplary digital economy. Throughout the past 15 years, Morocco has worked on advancing its digital sector by increasing internet penetration across the country with a vision of introducing e-government solutions for the coming years to facilitate administrative procedures for citizens and residents. Read Also: Coursera CEO: ‘Businesses, Schools Will Never be the Same’ The COVID-19 pandemic has also accelerated the digital transition. According to Morocco’s Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Businesses, and Employment Younes Sekkouri, the country’s “significant progress” in the digital sector “was stimulated by the COVID-19 pandemic” which further supported the implementation of the country’s new development model. Today, Morocco’s interest in digital transformation is growing, says Minister of Digital Transformation Ghita Mezzour. The government is currently developing a national strategy for digitization with support from local stakeholders including investors, civil society, and startups. In this context, Huawei is capitalizing on the Moroccan need for technical support to train young talent and build modern and secure infrastructures required to classify, store, and protect private data. Given that Huawei provides a range of solutions from training programs to services such as cloud and cybersecurity, the Chinese tech giant states it is “here to support the vision of the government,” adding that the Moroccan efforts to build and sustain a digital economy could “bring significant growth” to the local ecosystem. In an interview with MWN, Chief Strategy Officer of Huawei Morocco Chakib Achour noted “several solutions” provided by the company in the Moroccan market including sovereign clouds and cybersecurity services. Both products can support Morocco’s e-government services in the fields of education and health while protecting private data in accordance with national regulations. Huawei is also working closely with three phone network operators in Morocco to increase network connectivity and upgrade 4G networks with the support of established data centers, says Achour, adding that the company has built more than 50% of network infrastructures in the country. 15. Since being announced back in 2019, information on Montreal-based developer Red Barrels’ new co-op horror game The Outlast Trials has been somewhat hard to come by. While we’ve seen some moody trailers, the question of how the game actually plays has largely remained. Thankfully, as the game’s closed beta kicks off, IGN has released a preview providing some new footage and information about The Outlast Trials, which you can check out, below. As we’ve known since the beginning, The Outlast Trials is designed to be played with up to four people co-op style, with players being able to gather in a hub between sessions. In the hub you’ll be able to customize your character and prison cell, as well as socialize and engage in minigames (like arm wrestling) with other players. As for the missions themselves, they’re classic Outlast – which is to say, lots of creeping around in the dark with no direct way to fight back. Managing your night vision, which runs on a limited battery system, will of course be crucial. That said, there are new perks, like the ability to see through walls with the X-ray rig. Players will be able to set their loadouts before a play session, which will be important, as your inventory is very limited (you can only carry three items at any one time). It will certainly be interesting to see how (or if) co-op enhances the Outlast experience. Frankly, the usernames floating around above your fellow players’ heads kinda feels like it may break immersion. Haven’t been keeping up with The Outlast Trials? Here is a brief official description… “Set in the era of the Cold War, human guinea pigs are involuntarily recruited by the good folks at the Murkoff Corporation to test advanced methods of brainwashing and mind control. In a world of distrust, fear, and violence, your morals will be challenged, your endurance tested, and your sanity crushed. All in the name of progress, science, and profit. Red Barrels invites you to experience mind-numbing terror, this time with friends. Work together and maybe you’ll survive The Outlast Trials. It’s always better to shit your pants in good company.” The Outlast Trials is expected to launch on PC sometime in 2023. The game’s closed beta kicks off today (October 28) and runs until November 1. Sign-ups are still available on the game’s Steam page, so perhaps you can still get in for some horrific times with friends this Halloween weekend. https://wccftech.com/the-outlast-trials-preview-video-gruesome-action-multiplayer-hub/

  17. Earlier this month, AMD introduced some coding into the main Coreboot, offering support for a few different SoCs (system-on-chips). The new updates provide future enablement for Mendocino and Zen 4 Phoenix SoCs. However, the codenames chosen are somewhat unexpected, as they are the names of three "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch" characters — Morgana, Glinda, and Sabrina. AMD Coreboot implements could usher in Mendocino & Phoenix open-source updates Interesting how Archie Comics characters appear in the unlikeliest of places. If you grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, you might remember the show "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch," which was based on the Archie Comics magazine of the same name. Recently, the characters saw a revival on Netflix (now defunct) and were moved to "Riverdale" on the CW. Michael Larabel of Phoronix has discovered the link to the three nicknames AMD uses for upcoming APU and SoC enablement, which gives us a better look at the future additions added to Coreboot over the last month. Larabel notes that the header files that the codename Sabrina is connected to mention Chrome's operating system and Chromebooks. This implementation is beneficial for AMD as Chromebooks utilizing AMD chips have been quite successful for the company. Introducing open-source firmware options for the company's Chromebook partners will allow for more adaptability of the systems. Glinda and Sabrina could also be linked to Mendocino, the CPU series used for more budget-line laptops and handheld systems. The enablement of Glinda is relatively new to Coreboot as Sabrina was first introduced in the first few weeks of this month, and the two will further assist partners in making cost-friendly devices and low-cost systems backed by AMD. Unfortunately, outside of Sabrina being tied to Mendocino, Morgana and Glinda are still the two unclear codenames used by the AMD family. Morgana, however, could spell implementation of the Zen 4 Phoenix SoCs. But it could also introduce the successor to Barcelo.Glinda, recently updated yesterday, placed 5.4K lines of code into the initial code, which does not count the code already introduced for Morgana and Sabrina. In addition to the Coreboot enablement, a section of Glinda "blobs" were added to the PSP support and video BIOS binary, reports Larabel. https://wccftech.com/amd-morgana-glinda-sabrina-socs-explained/
  18. Today's pick from the Bring a Trailer auction site is this Volvo 244DL, a tribute to road cycling's greatest hero. • This era of Volvo sedan is a design icon: simple, boxy, honest. • It was notably durable, if not exactly swift, one reason that the 240-series Volvo has a huge fan base. This one's cycling support vehicle livery just adds to the charm. The appeal of a boxy Volvo is easy to understand. They are simple, immensely pragmatic, durable, and safe. Thanks to a total lack of pretentiousness and a two-decade production run, the 240 is familiar and beloved. It's the car that makes being square and nerdy actually kind of cool. And the example up for auction this week at Bring a Trailer—which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos—is a machine that combines the worlds of car geeks and cycling nerds. Finished in the orange livery of a Team Molteni support vehicle, this 1977 240DL comes complete with a roof-mounted bicycle rack bearing a road-racing bike set up like that of Tour de France legend Eddy Merckx. The whole package is a fun tribute to a bit of Swedish-Belgian-Italian cycling history. The Greatest Road Rider Édouard “The Cannibal” Merckx was the sort of champion cyclist to make anyone with more than one pair of clip-in cycling shoes swoon. Born in Belgium just a month after the end of World War II, he started riding at an early age and found success almost immediately. By the end of his career in the late 1970s, Merckx had won five Tours de France, five Giros d'Italia, and Spain's grand tour, La Vuelta. He also won three cycling World Championships and followed up a double grand-tour win in 1974 with a win at the UCI Road World Championships, thus making him the first rider to win cycling's triple crown. Basically, we're talking Mario Andretti in Spandex. The "Cannibal" nickname was bestowed by the daughter of a teammate and referred to his tenacious refusal to let anyone else win. This laser focus made him a household name at the time, at least among cycling enthusiasts, and Merckx is still regarded as the greatest road rider of all time. Many of his wins came while riding as a professional for the Italian team Molteni. The team favored a striking orange racing livery on its jerseys, and the support vehicles were likewise painted bright orange. In the club's early days, Simcas and the like carried the bikes to race day. When Merckx was at the peak of his career, Molteni was mostly Volvos. This 1977 Volvo DL is a couple model years too new for an exact match, but it nonetheless wears the Team Molteni colors with pride. Powered by a 2.1-liter four-cylinder engine punching out a little over a hundred horsepower and fitted with the four-speed-plus-overdrive manual transmission, this is very much a Volvo of the "world's fastest tractor" variety. Some cosmetic issues with peeling clear-coat are mentioned in the listing, and there's some corrosion noted. At heart, this 244 is a Volvo with 237,000 miles on the odometer, and it has its fair share of wear. Then again, Volvos from this era tend to have the durability of granite. This thing will still be on the road when the last gallon of gasoline is produced or until the heat death of the universe. Whichever comes first. Complete with the Eddy Merckx tribute steel-frame road bike on the roof rack, this car can't be beat for charisma-per-dollar appeal. All the Cars and Coffee folk'll love it and so will the Sunday-morning pack cycling crowd. And so will the Volvo geeks. Expect thumbs up from everyone. With four days to go until the auction ends on Sunday, October 30, bidding sits at $4444. Don't miss out on your chance to snap it up. The Cannibal would never forgive you. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a41777281/1977-volvo-244dl-team-molteni-bring-a-trailer-auction/
  19. Rabat - Internet personality and former kickboxer Andrew Tate has reportedly converted to Islam. A video of Andrew Tate praying has gone viral online. Athlete Tam Khan shared the video of Tate. Commenting on criticism of Tate’s decision, Khan said that all humans make mistakes. “Muslims please have sabr [patience]. Don’t be so harsh. We all make mistakes and we all deliver our speech sometimes incorrectly. I personally know Andrew & mashallah his love for Islam is genuine & it’s real. No PR stunts. He is one of us,” he wrote. Many internet users expressed astonishment about the influencer’s decision to convert to Islam. “Andrew Tate banned from all social media platforms, is being taught on how to pray salah from his close Arab friend in Dubai. Interesting,” one Twitter user wrote. Tate’s criticism stemmed from his views described as extremely misogynistic. Tate has made several controversial statements on women and feminism, including stating that they belong at home and cannot drive, according to the Guardian. He also believes that rape victims “must bear responsibility” for their attacks. The influencer made the remarks amid the #MeToo movement, a campaign seeking to encourage women and men subject to violence and sexual abuse to speak up for their rights. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/10/352030/former-british-american-kickboxer-andrew-tate-converts-to-islam
  20. Rabat - Moroccan energy group Afriquia Gaz is in the process of acquiring the Mauritanian subsidiary of French energy group TotalEnergies. According to a report from the Mauritanian news agency, the regional director of TotalEnergy informed employees during a meeting that the company is in the process of transferring jurisdictions to Afriquia Gaz, adding that the transition phase will be complete in a few weeks' time. TotalEnergies in Mauritania operates in oil and gas exploration and production. Present in the country since 1999, the French company also provides service stations through 40 retail points. With 30% of its oil and gas production sourced in Africa, TotalEnergies has a strong foothold on the continent. However, in recent months, the company came under heavy criticism in South Africa over an alleged $3 billion offshore gas drilling license this month. A South African climate NGO had launched the campaign demanding the company to stop labeling the transition from oil to gas as a “clean transition.” TotalEnergies was sailing in muddy waters long before the South African campaign. In September of this year, South African billionaire Johann Rupert made international headlines for liquidating his shares in the French giant. Rupert’s investment vehicle owned 25% of TotalEnergy’s stakes. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/10/352066/moroccos-afriquia-gaz-acquires-totalenergies-mauritanian-subsidiary
  21. Rabat: French artist Olivier Unia held an exhibition of his photography at Rabat's Tatmin gallery to pay homage to the city [Rabat] where he developed his passion for the art. The inauguration of the exhibition took place on Thursday, October 20, 2022 and it will be open to the public until November 3. In an interview with Morocco World News, the French artist recalled how his passion for photography began and explained why he chose to exhibit photographs of Rabat. Unia’s photographs reflect his journey in Rabat and capture different components of the city – architecture, landscapes, animals, lights, monuments, and Tbourida of the horses. “I felt extremely proud to have been able to capture moments of Moroccan culture in motion in a way that is akin to photographic art,’’ Unia told MWN. He continued ‘’I think what I like best about photography is how it captures the essence of a culture.’’ Unia began his career as a musician and discovered his passion for images while gazing at album covers for hours on end. He recalled that “during the COVID-19 lockdown everyone was bored in the arts professions because everything was stopped, and I had this camera, so I started using it to learn.’’ He went on, “it was a shock, a mental revolution, so I started shooting in Rabat.’’ The french artist arrived in Rabat by mere chance and planned to stay there for three years. However, the Moroccan capital on the Atlantic coast ended up being his home for fourteen years. Unia said. “I lived in many cities and countries. And fourteen years is probably the longest I've ever lived anywhere, and I don't see myself moving anytime soon.’’ He continued, “so there you have it—for the past fourteen years, I have discovered my passion for photography in Rabat.” Speaking of his admiration for the city he said, “with its year-round landscapes and lights, Rabat is a very photogenic city. Absolutely incredible, with beautiful skies, landscapes, monuments, and people, I still have a lot of photos to take here.’’ https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/10/352062/olivier-unia-captures-the-essence-of-rabat-in-photographs
  22. Rabat - Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) on Tuesday and Wednesday arrested five individuals for their alleged involvement in the extremist group ISIS. A statement from the BCIJ said the arrests took place in different locations across the country, including in Kenitra, Sidi Yahya Zaer, Inzegane, Chichaoua, and Casablanca. Preliminary data shows that the arrested suspects are between the ages of 20 and 45, and had pledged allegiance to ISIS and planned to carry out acts of terrorism, using explosive materials to target security institutions and personnel. Some of the suspects were also reportedly training to manufacture explosive devices. In Kenitra, security services seized a hunting rifle and ammunition during the arrest of one of the suspects. Searches in the other individuals' homes resulted in the seizure of bladed weapons and digital materials, all of which will be subject to technical investigation. BCIJ placed the suspects in custody for investigation, seeking to determine the ties and cooperation between the defendants and other extremist organizations abroad. The operation is part of Morocco’s approach to strengthening regional security against extremist groups and their affiliates. Moroccan security units have repeatedly collaborated to halt extremist projects. Since 2002, the North African country dismantled more than 2,009 terror cells and arrested over 3,353 people for their alleged involvement in terrorism. Many organizations have emphasized Morocco’s pivotal work against extremism. Earlier this week, Javier Colomina Piriz, the deputy Assistant Secretary General of the North Atlantic Organization (NATO) for Political Affairs and Security Policy, emphasized Morocco’s “enormous responsibility” to tackle terrorism. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/10/352048/morocco-arrests-5-suspected-isis-affiliates
