  3. DETROIT -- General Motors CEO Mary Barra plans to provide a peek of upcoming electric vehicles at CES next month and bolster the automaker’s credentials as a rising power in EVs, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Barra will give the opening keynote address on Jan. 12 for the all-digital expo, formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show. She plans to explain how electrification is a necessary step to address environmental and societal change -- and how GM is ready to play a central role, said the people, who asked not to be named. In addition to Barra’s address, GM will show a video at CES featuring its latest technology and preview some concept vehicles, including a plug-in Chevrolet pickup, some Cadillac models and vehicles for other brands, the people said. GM President Mark Reuss also will speak about the carmaker’s EV strategy. GM’s messaging blitz is designed to signal the company’s commitment to electrification and intent to take on EV market leader Tesla Inc. It’s the culmination of a series of announcements the automaker has made over the past year to embrace EVs, a move that’s becoming a hallmark of Barra’s six-year tenure atop GM. GM shares rose 3.8 percent to close trading at $42.45 on Wednesday in New York. Investors have been receptive to that shift as GM’s shares have risen to highs not seen in a decade. The stock is up more than 15 percent this year, well below Tesla’s seven-fold rise but on par with the S&P 500 Index and better than Ford Motor Co.’s 3.4 percent drop. It’s unclear if Chevy’s electric pickup concept will share the Silverado nameplate with its gasoline-fueled cousin, but it will join an electric Hummer truck that will go on sale late next year in a hotly contested market for battery-powered trucks. GM also will lean on its premium Cadillac brand to lead the charge into electrics when its Lyriq crossover goes on sale in 2022 Barra unveiled plans to spur electrification last month by boosting GM’s spending on EVs 35 percent to $27 billion and pledging to push out 30 battery-powered models by 2025. Some of those vehicles will be aimed at mass market buyers looking for sticker prices under $35,000. The move marked an acceleration of a strategy revealed in March to deploy new battery technology developed with LG Chem Ltd. in all of its brands. It’s unclear if Chevy’s electric pickup concept will share the Silverado nameplate with its gasoline-fueled cousin, but it will join an electric Hummer truck that will go on sale late next year in a hotly contested market for battery-powered trucks. GM also will lean on its premium Cadillac brand to lead the charge into electrics when its Lyriq crossover SUV goes on sale in 2022.
  4. Over the years, a diamond has remained one of the most spectacular gemstones of all time. But what exactly makes the diamond so fascinating? Not only does a diamond have the ability to captivate a person’s heart in just a few seconds, but the gemstone remains remarkable for the fact that they were formed before the age of dinosaurs. Today, a diamond is still known as the ultimate symbol of love making it the ideal gift for anniversaries, birthdays and special celebrations. Here are 10 fascinating facts in a nutshell that will make you fall in love with the magical gemstone even more: A CANDLE FLAME CONTAINS MILLIONS OF SMALL DIAMONDS throughout time many poets have compared the flickering flame of a candle to the gorgeous effect of a diamond. Of course, creative writers weren’t too far from the truth. According to Wuzong Zhou, a professor of chemistry at the University of St Andrews, around 1.5 million diamond nanoparticles can be found in a candle’s flame. Therefore, proposing during a candlelight dinner has even greater meaning. SCIENTISTS CAN TURN THE REMAINS OF A LOVED ONE INTO A DIAMOND If you’re looking to have an everlasting connection with a loved one who has passed away, there’s an option to compress their ashes and turn it into a man-made diamond. This way you will be able to cherish them forever. DIAMONDS WEREN’T ALWAYS MINED Today, the majority of diamonds on the market are mined underground or undersea using heavy machinery and high-tech equipment. However, before diamonds were mined below the earth’s surface they were found by miners alongside or at the bottom of rivers. This type of mining activity is known as alluvial mining. THE EUREKA DIAMOND WAS DISCOVERED BY A 15-YEAR-OLD BOY The beautiful Eureka diamond was first discovered in South Africa by a 15-year-old boy named Erasmus Stephanus in 1867. The 21.25 carat rough diamond was found near Hopetown on the Orange River. Today, the polished diamond weighs 10.73 carats. A DIAMOND IS ONE OF THE HARDEST NATURAL SUBSTANCES ON EARTH Diamonds are considered to be one of hardest natural materials known to man; according to researchers a diamond is up to 58x harder than anything you will find in nature. Therefore, the only object or piece of equipment that would be able to cut through a diamond would be another diamond LUCY DIAMOND IN THE SKY In 2007, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics announced the discovery of a 10 billion-trillion-trillion carat diamond in the sky called, Lucy. The star was named after the Beatles song, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and is located fifty light years from Earth. NOT ALL DIAMONDS ARE WHITE IN COLOUR Did you know not all diamonds are colourless? In nature you will find a variety of natural fancy colour diamonds; the extremely rare diamonds come in different shades of red, blue, pink, yellow, brown, black, orange and green. DIAMONDS WERE ONLY AVAILABLE TO THE ELITE Diamonds weren’t always available to the general public. During the twentieth-century France laid down a law, which indicated that only the King was allowed to wear diamonds. If a peasant or non-royalty member of the community was seen wearing the fascinating gemstone they would be dealing with serious consequences. Around this time, diamonds were exceptionally rare. It was the discovery of diamonds in South Africa that changed the world diamond industry forever. THERE ARE DIAMONDS IN SPACE Scientists revealed that there are white dwarf stars in space that each contain a diamond core. But what’s even more fascinating is that the largest diamond in the universe weighs a whopping 2.27 thousand trillion tons and holds up to 10 billion carats in weight. A DIAMOND LOSES UP TO 50% OF ITS WEIGHT DURING THE CUTTING AND POLISHING PROCESS n order for a rough diamond to reach its full potential it will undergo a cutting and polishing process; during which, the diamond will lose up to 50% of its original rough carat weight on average. The trade off? A diamond cut to perfect proportion and symmetry will display the ultimate combination of fire, brilliance and scintillation. There’s no end to the fascinating world of a diamond. For more interesting facts and history on the gemstones book a guided tour at the Cape Town Diamond Museum. It’s simply a Cape Town attraction not to be missed!
  5. (CNN) — Nepali airline Buddha Air made a blunder recently when it flew passengers to the wrong airport. The domestic airline departed from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport on December 18. From there it flew northwest to the country's second-biggest city of Pokhara, instead of going southeast to the flight's intended destination, the southern city of Janakpur. The two cities are about 250 miles apart. Astha Basnet, executive officer at Buddha Air, tells CNN Travel that the mix-up was due to two factors: "lapses in communication and failure to follow detailed standard operating procedures (SOP)." In simpler terms, it was just a mix-up. Due to weather conditions, many Nepali airports open later in the day during the winter. Because of that abbreviated window, it's not unusual for multiple flights to leave in a short amount of time, and evidently that led to confusion. Still, despite the surprise that passengers must have gotten when they pulled into the wrong airport, the situation reportedly went relatively smoothly. Once Buddha Air became aware of what happened, they had the pilots take the passengers on to Janakpur as planned. There are no direct flights between Pokhara and Janakpur, so the airline was granted special permission to fly there. The 69 passengers on board -- 66 adults and three children -- made it to Janakpur safely, albeit a few hours behind schedule. There were no reported mechanical issues with the plane itself. Buddha Air is a Nepal-based airline that was founded in 1996 and began operations the following year. Basnet confirms that the airline crew will receive additional training following the flight mix-up and that the airline has modified its existing flight manuals. While these kinds of airplane errors do happen, they are fairly rare. In 2019, a British Airways flight from London City Airport that was intended to arrive in Dusseldorf accidentally went to Edinburgh due to an incorrect flight plan being filed. Passengers figured out something was going on when they looked out the window -- and at their Google Maps apps. The local paper reported that there was “a lot of hustle and bustle at the domestic terminal” that day, paired with a “breezy afternoon” where the “weather was not quite favorable for the flights,” causing delays. With all the factors in place, a quick change happened. “The weather was already causing flight delays, and to make up for the flying time, Buddha Air officials decided to fly to Pokhara first,” an airline official told The Kathmandu Post, explaining that they changed the flight number. “The difference in flight schedule between Janakpur and Pokhara was 15 to 20 minutes.”
  6. The next Alfa Romeo GTV is on the program of launch in 2021, and the impression of our latest artist reveals what you can expect from the new Italian sports car. It presents itself as a more vivid rival to the BMW 4 Series, Audi A5 and Mercedes C-Class Coupe. The GTV badge was last used on the 2 + 2 coupe with front-wheel drive 1994-2004, but the new one will be an abbreviated two-door version of the impressive Giulia saloon whose ‘Giorgio’ platform is also used for a good effect on the Stelvio crossover. It is a welcome return to the two-door coupe segment from one of the most modern Italian car manufacturers. Be sure to let us know if you are evaluating the design direction by commenting below. New GTV engines, specs Precisely no one will be surprised to learn that the new Alfa Romeo GTV will use powertrains already seen elsewhere in the FCA range. The 2.9-liter V6 already used for the devastating effect in the Giulia Quadrifoglio will reappear, although it is hybridized here in a top-of-the-range halo model. CAR magazine sources suggest that the V6’s power will be around 460 hp on the GTV, matched to the electric motor located between the V6 and the transmission to achieve a total system output of 530 bhp – and short bursts of up to 600 bhp +. In contrast, an electric range of just 30 miles will be available when operating in silent EV mod Interior and Technology Although it was unlikely that the GTV interior would get the fanciful appointments found on the Alfa Romeo Tonale concept, the cabin should have been able to accommodate four people. This would help it compete with established rivals such as the BMW 4-series and the Audi A5. We'd also expected the same or better infotainment features and driver-assistance technology that is currently available on the Giulia. These include a standard touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability along with available adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking. Engines, Ride, and Handling The GTV would not only ride on the same architecture as the Giulia and Stelvio, it would feature similar powertrain options. The base model should have been powered by a 280-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The inevitable Quadrifoglio version would inherit the current Giuila QF's raucous 505-hp twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6. Alfa is still developing a revolutionary hybrid system that recoups energy and will be capable of producing 600 horsepower in short bursts. Otherwise, the GTV would likely have standard rear-wheel drive and possibly offer a rear-biased, all-wheel-drive setup.

  10. Melbourne, Australia (CNN)The day Farhad Bandesh turned 39, he heard the words he'd come to believe weren't possible, after almost eight years in Australian immigration detention facilities: "You're free to go." For years, the Australian government had vowed never to allow asylum seekers like Bandesh, who had been processed on offshore immigration centers in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific nation of Nauru, to settle on its soil. Now, suddenly Bandesh, and six others, were free in Australia. "I was just shocked, I didn't know what to do," said Bandesh, a Kurdish refugee who fled Iran seeking safety Australia. "There is no more headcount, there is no high security, there is no fences. Wow." Their release has given hope to other detainees. "I am very happy for him," said Bandesh's friend and onetime roommate Mostafa Azimitabar, who remains detained in a Melbourne hotel with around 60 other men brought to Australia from PNG and Nauru for urgent medical treatment. "His happiness helps me not to give up." Australia's Home Affairs department has declined to comment on the freed men, but their lawyers say they all had upcoming court hearings when they would argue they were being unlawfully detained. Their release follows a landmark federal court ruling in September that ordered a man be freed under habeas corpus, a centuries-old legal principle that protects detainees from unlawful imprisonment. It's the first time it has been used in modern Australian legal history. As the government prepares an urgent appeal against that September ruling in the High Court, human rights lawyers say they've been bombarded with requests from detainees to file similar cases. A sea journey to prison Bandesh entered Australian waters after July 19, 2013, when Canberra announced that no asylum seekers who arrived by boat would ever be settled in Australia. Successive Australian governments have defended that policy, saying it has deterred both asylum seekers and traffickers who profit from their misery, saving lives at sea. But Bandesh said he didn't know about the policy when he came ashore on the remote Australian territory of Christmas Island. "When I reached Christmas Island I thought, This is the freedom, the nightmare's over, I am a free man now," he said. Instead he was assigned a number and crammed into a compound on a remote island, thousands of miles from Australia. Life inside the guarded Manus Island camp could be violent, when tensions erupted into riots. Bandesh was granted refugee status but told he could only live in PNG or Nauru, another island nation that agreed to detain Australia's asylum seekers, or any other country willing to take him. Others applied for a visa to live in the US, where 870 men have been resettled as of October under a deal struck between the countries' former leaders, according to Australian government figures. Some went home, either voluntarily or by force, and almost 300 remain on PNG and Nauru, of whom at least 70% are refugees. Medical treatment in PNG and Nauru was poor, and so campaigners pushed for the sickest to be brought to Australia for treatment under Medevac, a law that allowed doctors to decide if detainees needed treatment on the mainland. It has since been repealed. Landmark ruling In September, a Federal Court judge found that a Syrian man who was held in detention for months after his visa was canceled was falsely imprisoned because the authorities were not actively processing or deporting him. Justice Mordecai Bromberg said the government should have given the man a protection visa, as it was unable to send him to Syria because of its international obligations not to return people to harm, and ordered him to be released. He made the order under habeas corpus, a legal writ used in common law countries to free people considered to unlawfully detained. A ray of hope When word got out that the minister had granted some men visas, a ripple of excitement spread through the detention system. Human rights lawyers said they were flooded with calls and messages from detainees asking if their case could be considered, and advocates rushed to renew their pledges to offer men accommodation, if they were released. "Support has been offered by an amazing network of groups and individuals, including accommodation," said Jana Favero from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. Some men even asked for help updating their CVs, said refugee advocate Jane Salmon. More cases are expected to be filed, but law firms and rights groups have warned detainees that attempting to pursue similar cases involves "very serious risks" that could see them forcibly removed from Australia.
