  1. (CNN)As America's allies issued strong condemnations of rioters who stormed the US Capitol building in Washington on Wednesday, the nation's geopolitical foes used last night's events to question the efficacy of democracy. The violence erupted after US President Donald Trump spoke to protesters to repeat his false claim that he won the US election in November. Scenes of armed rioters breaching and trashing the Capitol -- which interrupted Congress's count of electoral votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden's win -- disturbed top diplomats around the world. Democratic leaders reacted with concern online, describing the chaotic scenes as "shocking" and "disgraceful." As the chaos unfolded, several foreign embassies in Washington issued stay-at-home notices for their citizens, and European leaders began deploying the language usually reserved for incidents in which democratic values and rule of law are under siege. And on Thursday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson issued a strong condemnation against both the rioters and President Trump. "On the United States and the election, I want to say that all my life America has stood for some very important things — an idea of freedom and an idea of democracy. And ... so far as he encouraged people to storm the Capitol and insofar as the President has consistently cast doubt on the outcome of a free and fair election, I believe that that was completely wrong," he said a press conference, in response to a journalist's question. "And what President Trump has been saying about that has been completely wrong and I unreservedly condemn encouraging people to behave in the disgraceful way that they did in the Capitol," he added. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, who rarely comments on the internal affairs of the alliance's member states, urged Americans to respect the outcome of the November election. His call was echoed by European Parliament President David Sassoli, who added, "We are certain the US will ensure that the rules of democracy are protected." "President Trump and several members of Congress bear substantial responsibility for developments," tweeted Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven. "The democratic election process must be respected." There were however notes of schadenfreude in the responses from Russian and Iranian officials. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called Trump a "sick person" who had disgraced his country during a televised speech Thursday on Iran's state-run news agencies. "What happened in the US shows how fragile Western democracy is," he said. "Despite all their scientific and industrial achievements, we see a huge influence of populism. When a sick person takes office, we see how he disgraces his country and creates troubles for the world." Russian President Vladimir Putin -- who has consistently rejected American "unilateralism" as the world's global power -- made no statement on last night's chaotic events, but his lawmakers did not hold back. Konstantin Kosachev, the chairman of the Russian upper house foreign affairs committee, said the storming signaled the derailment of American democracy. "The celebration of democracy is over. Alas, this is rock bottom, I say this without a hint of gloating," Kosachev wrote on Facebook Thursday. "America no longer defines the course, and therefore has lost all right to set it. And even more so to impose it on others," Kosachev said . Kosachev cited Trump's "narcissism, eccentricity and adventurism" and "impersonal political platforms of Democrats and Republicans" as reasons behind the unrest. "America is split in half, and the equal halves will always challenge any voting results that are to their disadvantage," he wrote. A lawmaker from Russia's lower house of parliament and a member of the information policy committee, Anton Gorelkin, praised the social media platforms' decision to restrict Donald Trump's accounts. "Events in the United States once again show the power of social networks as tools for influencing the masses," Gorelkin wrote on his Telegram channel. Russian state TV anchor Evgeny Popov noted sarcastically on Twitter that "the world is bursting at its seams. Thank God, not our world. Merry Christmas!"
  2. UK says its aircraft carrier strike group is ready to deploy. China's already watching (CNN)Britain is officially an aircraft carrier power again. The Royal Navy announced on Monday that the UK's Carrier Strike Group, centered on Britain's largest ever warship, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, had achieved initial operating capability. The designation means the 65,000-ton carrier, its air assets including F-35 stealth fighter jets and helicopters, as well as its escorting destroyers, frigates, submarines and supply ships, are ready to deploy within five days of receiving orders to do so. Qualified pilots and ground crews are on notice. "This is a hugely significant milestone for HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy and the whole country. This achievement is a testament to the determination of our service personnel and industry workforce who have delivered this first-rate military capability, a capability held by only a handful of nations," UK Defense Minister Jeremy Quin said in a statement. The commander of carrier strike group, Commodore Steve Moorehouse, touted his unit's readiness in a Twitter post. "In practical terms, my Strike Group is now at Very High Readiness, meaning we are at 5 days' notice to deploy, if required, in response to global events & in defence of British interests," Moorehouse tweeted. In a followup tweet, he hinted at what is to come. Carrier strike group staff are planning for the Queen Elizabeth's first operational deployment, which Moorhouse said would encompass the Royal Navy's largest peacetime task group in 25 years and be proof of Britain's commitment to maintaining worldwide security -- "a visible demonstration of Global Britain," Moorhouse called it. Specific dates for the first deployment have yet to be announced. The Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth arrives back in Portsmouth Naval Base last fall after taking part in major exercises off Scotland with F-35B Lightning jets to prepare it for Carrier Strike Group readiness ahead of its first operational deployment. UK as a global power Since 2017, UK defense officials have been saying the carrier's first deployment would include Asia and the Pacific on a route from Britain that would likely take it through the South China Sea. "The UK is a global power with truly global interest ... we must be prepared to compete for our interests and our values far, far from home," then-UK Defense Minister Gavin Williamson said in 2019. The carrier would take its contingent of state-of-the-art F-35 stealth fighter jets into a region where "China is developing its modern military capability and its commercial power," Williamson said in an address to the Royal United Services Institute think tank in London. But the presence of any foreign warships in the South China Sea is frowned upon by China. Beijing claims almost all of the 3.3 million square kilometer (1.3 million square mile) South China Sea as its territory. Even ahead of Monday's Royal Navy readiness announcement, Chinese military officials were warning London against interfering in the region. "We believe the South China Sea should not become a battleground for big power competition, or a sea full of roaming warships," Senior Col. Tan Kefei, a spokesman for China's Defense Ministry, said at a December 31 news briefing reported by the state-run Xinhua media agency in a posting on the Chinese military's official English website. Foreign powers sending their warships to the South China Sea, where China has built military bases on man-made islands, were behind the "militarizaiton" of the waterway, Tan said. "The Chinese military will take necessary measures to protect national sovereignty, security, and its developmental interests, as well as safeguard peace and stability in the region," he said NATO and the Chinese threat Tan's comments followed a report published late last year from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), of which Britain is a major player, calling the rise of the Chinese military a threat to the alliance. "China has an increasingly global strategic agenda, supported by its economic and military heft. It has proven its willingness to use force against its neighbors, as well as economic coercion and intimidatory diplomacy well beyond the Indo-Pacific region," the NATO report said. "China is increasingly likely to project military power globally, including potentially in the Euro-Atlantic area."
  3. In the evenings, the locals like to walk. But it’s not just a walk, it’s an official evening walk where every resident comes out to stretch their legs and catch up with their neighbors. Everyone gathers at various places, walking and talking until nightfall. When an Albanian is agreeing with you, he or she will shake their head, and when they are disagreeing with you, they will nod. Be warned and avoid confusion. Yes, means no and no, means yes. The heroine of Albania is Mother Teresa. She was born in Skopje, which is now a part of Macedonia, and is one of the most beloved religious figures of the 20th century. She is the only Albanian to win a Nobel prize. More Albanians live outside the country than within: The Albanian diaspora is vast, stretching from its neighbors such as Greece and Turkey to further afield nations such as the US and Canada – so much so that it is believed that the number of Albanians living outside Albania is greater than the country’s famous tion of nearly 3 million. Tirana, the capital of Albania has a lot of things in common with other European capitals but there is one thing different. It’s one of the only capitals without a McDonalds (as well as the Vatican City). You can’t set your clock by Albanian buses: Albanian buses (called furgons) have no timetable, they depart when they are ready or full. In 1995, drivers in Shkodër in northern Albania refused to pay a 2,000-lek (£13) traffic light tax, because their city has no traffic lights. “It is absurd,” one driver told Reuters at the time. It has loads of flowers: Though small, Albania boasts more than 3,250 species of plants, which accounts for 30 percent of all flora in Europe. The best places to see the country’s colorful stock is its national parks, of which there are 15. No medals: Albania has never won a medal at the Olympics. Its most famous events are weightlifting, shooting and wrestling. The traditional dress of Albania uses wool, cotton, and silk, with embroidered patterns and symbols like the silver and gold Albanian eagle. Other symbols include moons, stars, suns, and snakes. Each region has its own traditions. If you’re looking for a good gift to take home, try buying a pair of Opinga – the traditional shoe worn by both men and women. The eagle is the national symbol of the Albanians. The current Albania flag carries a black-headed eagle against a red background. The people of Albania are known for their products made of wood, metal, copper, leather, wool, gold and silver such as jewelry, pottery, musical instruments and carpets. The country is famous for making handmade carpets of the finest wool and with unique art forms that have made it a distinctive mark in Albanian industries. It is also known as the manufacture of a traditional musical instrument called cifteli, which contains two strings and is used in northern Albania and Kosovo. Beauty products are very po[CENSORED]r for their quality, making visitors to Albania to buy these items as collectibles and souvenirs. DHERMI, BEACH IN ALBANIA.

  5. Debris from a destroyed house is seen in Ask, Gjerdrum county, on December 31, 2020, one day after a landslide. (CNN)Rescue teams in Norway are still hoping to find survivors more than five days after a deadly landslide hit the village of Ask, 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of the capital Oslo, according to the country's police. "We are still in a rescue operation, which means that we can still find survivors," Roger Pettersen, Police Operations Manager, told a press conference Monday. Seven people died in the disaster, and three people are still reported as missing, Norwegian Police said. The cold weather is working against rescue efforts, Andre Thiller, health operations manager, said during the conference. Nevertheless, he said, survivors may still be alive hidden in "cavities in the landslide," which is why authorities are making "absolutely sure that all relevant cavities have been scanned before we end the effort." Rescue efforts are ongoing in the village of Ask. The landslide is the worst the country has seen in recent years, in terms of "the number of houses involved and the number of evacuees," the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) said in a statement. It took place during the early hours of December 30, when mud hurtled into Ask, located in the Gjerdrum municipality. Footage from the scene showed a collapsed hillside and buildings hanging off the edge of the crater. At least seven people died in the disaster Other houses had collapsed into the crater, forcing police to evacuate hundreds of people who lived in the area. NVE said sliding clay caused an "avalanche pit of approximately 300 by 700 meters (980 to 2300 feet)." "It hurts to see how the forces of nature have ravaged Gjerdrum," the country's Prime Minsiter Erna Solberg said on social media. "My thoughts go to all those affected by the landslide," he added. King Harald V of Norway and Queen Sonja of Norway visited the area after the disaster. The King and Queen of Norway visited the site of the landslide on Sunday. "The terrible incident makes a deep impression on all of us," King Harald V said during his annual New Year's address. "I sympathize with you who are entering the new year with sorrow and uncertainty. With you who have lost your homes and who right now are desperate and do not see a way forward." COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Norwegian officials insisted Monday that there was “still hope” ofnfinding survivors in air pockets five days after a landslide killed at least seven people as it carried away homes in a village north of the capital. Three people are still missing. Police spokesman Roger Pettersen said search efforts in the landslide-hit village of Ask, 25 kilometers (16 miles) northeast of Oslo, are still considered “a rescue operation.” But only bodies have been found in the past few days. The region’s below-freezing temperatures are “working against us, but we have been very clear in our advice to the (rescuers) that as long as there are cavities where the missing may have stayed, it is possible to survive,” said Dr. Halvard Stave, who is taking part in the rescue operation. Temperatures in Ask were minus 8 degrees Celsius (17.6 degrees Fahrenheit) on Monday. “I would still describe the situation as very unreal,” said Anders Oestensen, the mayor of Gjerdrum municipality, where Ask is located.

Charlie Chaplin made his movie mocking Hitler with his own money because Hollywood was afraid of losing money if they took a stand. 3. Frank Sinatra has three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. One for film, one for music and one for television. 4. In 1920’s the Hollywood-sign was lit by thousands of light bulbs and the guy who changed the burnt ones, lived in a little cabin near the sign. 5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, recorded a $167 million loss ‘on paper’ because of “Hollywood Accounting.” Warner Brothers effectively made sure that the movie lost money by paying itself a $212 million “distribution fee” off the top. 6. One major reason that Hollywood emerged as the center of filmmaking is that early on, most moviemaking patents were held by Thomas Edison’s company in New Jersey, and filmmakers were sued to stop their productions. To escape this, they began moving out west, where enforcement was difficult. – Source 7. The Kids in the Hall got their name from an old Hollywood practice of blaming the young writers that hung out and wrote jokes on the fly in the hallways of live TV talk/variety shows when a joke bombed. “I got this from the kids in the hall.” 8. The blinking light atop the Capitol Records Tower spells out the word “Hollywood” in Morse code, and has done so since the building’s opening in 1956. 9. Legendary Hollywood producer Hal Roach would employ someone called a “wildie” who was either an insane person or a drunk to sit in his writers’ room and spout crazy ideas whenever they had writer’s block. 10. According to the diary of H. J. Whitley, known as the “Father of Hollywood”, on his honeymoon in 1886 he stood at the top of a hill looking out over the valley. Along came a Chinese man in a wagon carrying wood. The man got out of the wagon and bowed. The Chinese man was asked what he was doing and replied, “I holly-wood”, meaning ‘hauling wood.’ HJ Whitley had an epiphany and decided to name his new town Hollywood. 11. The world-famous ‘HOLLYWOOD’ sign came about in 1923, when a real estate agent called Harry Chandler decided to advertise properties in the locality. It cost him $21,000 to raise the ‘HOLLYWOODLAND’ sign that was initially meant to stay on for eighteen months only. In 1949, the sign was edited to read just ‘HOLLYWOOD.’ The Hollywood sign itself has several interesting (and tragic) stories associated with it, including that of broadway star Peg Entwistle, who committed suicide by jumping off the ‘H.’ As it needed frequent renovations and upkeep, the Hollywood Sign Trust was set up in 1995 to look after this legendary landmark. 12. The name “Hollywood” is often applied to any film or TV production location within Greater Los Angeles, whether or not it is physically located within Hollywood. For example, from the time it relocated from New York in 1972 until its host retired in 1992, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson was announced as being broadcast “from Hollywood” when in truth it originated from a studio facility in Burbank, California.
  9. Overview Acura is on a tear updating its small lineup of cars and SUVs. Among them is the three-row MDX, whose recent overhaul brings lots of goodies. This SUV takes its handsome styling cues from the compact RDX SUV and TLX sedan, and the cabin boasts luxury materials and features worthy of the Acura's premium badge. The base powertrain for this front-driver consists of a 290-hp 3.5-liter V-6 and a 10-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive is available. But select the performance-oriented Type S model and you'll get a turbocharged 355-hp 3.0-liter V-6 and standard all-wheel drive. What's New for 2022? Acura redesigned the MDX for 2022, skipping the 2021 model year. The new SUV shares its styling and technology with the recently revamped RDX and TLX models and will reach dealerships in February 2021. As driving enthusiasts, we're most intrigued by the Type S for its performance aspirations, but Acura says that model won't go on sale until the summer of 2021. For buyers looking for a nicely equipped luxury crossover without the sporty flair, we'd recommend the Technology trim, which has niceties such as leather upholstery with contrast stitching, adjustable interior ambient lighting, an ELS Studio stereo system with 12 speakers, and low-speed front and rear automated emergency braking. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The new MDX uses the same 290-hp 3.5-liter V-6 as the outgoing model, but the engine is now mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of a nine-speed. Front-wheel drive remains standard with all-wheel drive available as an option. The outgoing 2020 MDX also offered a hybrid powertrain, but we haven't heard if that will carry over to the new generation. The sporty Type S model is powered by a 355-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and comes standard with all-wheel drive. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The base 2022 MDX boasts EPA fuel-economy ratings of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Opting for all-wheel drive reduces the highway rating by 1 mpg. When we get a chance to test the new MDX, we'll put it through our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route and update this story with results. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The MDX's cabin has a far more premium look and feel than 2020 model's interior. French-stitched leather covers the dashboard in high-end trims, and open-pore wood mingles with metal and piano-black accents. Acura also outfitted the MDX with plenty of creature comforts, such as dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and leather upholstery. The available sport seats offer 16-way power adjustability as well as massage. Acura claims that passenger and cargo space have both increased, too. Infotainment and Connectivity The 2022 MDX features a large 12.3-inch infotainment display with a center-console-mounted touchpad controller. A 12.3-inch digital reconfigurable gauge display is also standard, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, in-dash navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. An ELS Studio stereo system is included on the Technology trim while the A-Spec and Advanced models get a 16-speaker ELS Studio 3D setup.
  10. More than 1,000 fines issued after illegal New Year's party in France breaches coronavirus restrictions French gendarmes talk to youths following the break-up of the party near a disused hangar in Lieuron on January 2. Paris (CNN)Five people have been arrested and more than 1,000 fines issued after an illegal New Year's rave in the French countryside ended on Saturday, local authorities said. More than 2,500 partygoers attended the illegal party in the region of Brittany in France, despite the government's strict coronavirus restrictions and a national night-time curfew. About 1,200 fines were issued as of Saturday morning following the rave, which started on Thursday, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said via his official Twitter profile. Trucks, sound systems and generators have been seized and Gendarmes officers "are continuing their investigation and checks so that this illegal event is harshly sanctioned," Darmanin added. Of the 1,200 fines, 800 were related to coronavirus restrictions and 400 to drug offenses, head of the Bretagne Gendarmerie forces General Pierre Sauvegrain told reporters French gendarmes break up the rave in Lieuron on January 2. French gendarmes block access to the party about 40km south of Rennes on New Year's Day. Up to 20 vehicles, including trucks which may be carrying sound equipment, managed to escape the police block by driving on a lane which led to the highway, Sauvegrain said. "There is a judicial investigation which will allow us to identify the main perpetrators and to arrest them," he added. Local police attempted to shut down the rave on Thursday, but said they "faced violent hostility," with a police vehicle set on fire, other vehicles damaged, and soldiers sprayed with bottles and stones, which caused minor injuries. "No new violence" occurred since then, a Gendarmerie Nationale spokesperson told CNN on Saturday, adding that partygoers were "leaving the premises voluntarily." Local authorities said the number of partygoers was "estimated at 2,500, coming from different French departments and from abroad." A national curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. has been in place since December 15. The rave near Rennes, and some other large-scale illegal parties throughout France that were broken up by the police, sparked concern about the spread of the coronavirus, as the country still suffers from the second wave of the pandemic. With more than 2.6 million confirmed cases of coronavirus — the highest number of cases in Europe — and some 65,000 deaths, France has paid a heavy toll to the pandemic. On Thursday, health authorities announced that a first case of a new coronavirus variant linked to South Africa had been reported in France, while the seven-day average of new daily infections cases has surpassed 13,000 — more than double the government’s daily target of 5,000 new infections to ease restrictions. To fight back a rise in infections in parts of the country, French authorities on Friday announced that it would bring forward by two hours the nighttime curfew in 15 of France’s 101 departments, or administrative divisions. The curfew will be at 6 p.m. rather than 8 p.m., starting on Saturday. With hospitals still struggling to cope with the second wave of the pandemic and while authorities fear that end-of-year holiday gatherings will result in a rebound of Covid-19 infections, the French government is under pressure to act. The French government has for the moment ruled out a return to a full lockdown, despite pressure from some local authorities, but Olivier Véran, France’s health minister, warned that a relaxation of the restrictions that have forced bars, restaurants, museums and theaters to close is likely to be delayed.

  14. BMW has confirmed the new, hardcore M5 CS is due to be unveiled later this month - and has confirmed it will boast a 626bhp power output. The most powerful M5 was briefly teased in an Instagram post by BMW M boss Markus Flasch, who revealed the output of the car's engine. The 626bhp total puts it ahead of the M5 Competition’s 616bhp and will mean a 0-62mph time very close to three seconds dead. A sign in the background of the Instagram post had the words ‘You shall drift everyday’ written on it, giving a clue as to how BMW sees this car performing. Coupled with a confirmed weight loss of 70kg over the M5 Competition, it means the M5 CS will be the most focused M5 yet. Details of exactly where BMW has trimmed the weight from remain scarce at this stage, but Flasch did confirm that the M5 CS will feature carbon bucket seats, like in the M3 and M4. However, unlike a lot of lightweight specials, the M5 CS will still feature rear seats so it appears that practicality hasn’t been completely sacrificed for the sake of performance. Flasch also revealed a few glimpses of some design details that will set the CS apart from the other M5s. Gold bronze highlights feature heavily, appearing on the front grille surround, forged alloys and side strake. The car also gets a subtle ‘M5 CS’ badge on the front grille. Carbon ceramic brakes are mentioned, including red calipers. Unusually, the car also has yellow headlights, in a nod to BMW’s motorsport heritage. Although Flasch didn’t mention anything regarding the exhaust or suspension set-up in his Instagram post, we would also expect to see a bespoke performance exhaust and firmer suspension, in line with the car’s performance angle. As Autocar has reported previously, the M5 CS will likely command a significant premium over the standard M5. We can expect it to start from well over £100,000, given the £102,235 price of the current M5 Competition. The new variant will be badged an M5 CS, placing the M5 alongside other M cars that have received the CS treatment. BMW also offers an M2 CS, and there were CS versions of the previous-generation M3 and M4. Prototypes for the M5 CS have been testing for months and now we have the first details thanks to Markus Flasch, the head of the BMW M division. In the teaser video, he confirmed that the M5 CS will have a peak output of 635 horsepower, though this is likely to be a metric rating used in Germany and thus could be reduced to 626 hp when rated in the United States. In comparison, the regular M5 makes 600 hp and the M5 Competition makes 617 hp. Flasch also confirmed a 70-kilogram (154-pound) weight reduction from the M5 Competition, with one of the weight-saving measures being the addition of lightweight carbon-fiber bucket seats borrowed from the latest M3 and M4. Flasch also said the car is a strict four-seater. Other elements confirmed for the M5 CS are forged aluminum wheels and a carbon-ceramic brake package with calipers painted red (as opposed to the traditional blue used on M cars). The wheels will feature an exclusive bronze finish that will also be applied to other areas of the car, like on the grille. Another exclusive touch will be motorsport-inspired yellow headlights, albeit only for the daytime running lights. There could be more. CS models tend to feature less restrictive electronic nannies, and there have been rumors of a newly developed V-8 possibly making its debut in this M5 CS. We'll know soon so stay tuned.
  15. (CNN)China approved its first homegrown coronavirus vaccine for general public use on Thursday, with officials promising to provide the general public with free inoculations. The approval comes a day after its manufacturer, state-owned pharmaceutical giant Sinopharm, said the vaccine is 79.34% effective, citing interim analysis of Phase 3 clinical trials. Though no detailed efficacy data for the vaccine has been released, the decision to grant approval underscores claims made by Chinese officials in recent weeks over the safety and effectiveness of the country's domestically produced vaccine candidates. China is aiming to inoculate 50 million people with domestic Covid-19 vaccines ahead of February's Lunar New Year celebrations. It has also drastically scaled up its vaccine emergency use program in recent weeks. Zeng Yixin, vice-minister of China's National Health Commission, said at a news conference Thursday that the Sinopharm vaccine will be provided free of charge to Chinese citizens. "Vaccine is a public good by its nature, and the price may vary based on the scale of use, but an important premise is that it will be provided to the public for free," Zeng said. Since December 15, more than 3 million vaccine doses have been administered to "key groups," Zeng said. That's on top of the 1.5 million doses administered to "high-risk groups" by the end of November, he added. Among those inoculated, fewer than 0.1% developed a light fever, and about two people per million developed "relative serious adverse reactions" such as allergies, according to Zeng. The next step is to inoculate vulnerable groups such as the elderly and people with underlying diseases, before vaccinating the general po[CENSORED]tion, Zeng said, without offering more details on how the vaccines will be provided for free. A Sinopharm company executive said Thursday the vaccine's Phase 3 trials covered more than 60,000 people, while detailed data will be released later and published in scientific journals at home and abroad. An official with China's drug regulator said the vaccine's clinical trials are still ongoing, and its manufacturer will be required to submit follow-up data to authorities. The Sinopharm vaccine is less effective than those developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, which have an efficacy rate of about 95%. Russia says its Sputnik V vaccine is 91% effective. And the vaccine's efficacy rate of 79% is lower than the 86% announced by the United Arab Emirates for the same vaccine on December 9. The UAE based its results on an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials conducted there from July. It has since approved the vaccine for public use. The Sinopharm vaccine has a higher efficacy rate than the one developed by the UK's Oxford University and AstraZeneca, which averaged 70%. On Wednesday, the UK became the first country to approve that vaccine for public distribution. A step closer to massive rollout Sinopharm's results were announced weeks after its global competitors. And with a lack of details, it remains unclear whether the information provided will be enough to dispel skepticism over the quality of Chinese vaccines. Nevertheless, the announcement could still pave the way for the vaccine's large-scale rollout both within China and globally. China is ready to send hundreds of millions of doses to countries that have conducted last-stage trials for its leading vaccine candidates. Chinese leaders have also promised a growing list of developing countries priority access. Beijing is using the global campaign as a soft power tool, analysts say, to try to repair any damage to its image from its early mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic. Aside from the approved Sinopharm vaccine, China has four coronavirus candidates which have reached Phase 3 clinical trials -- the last and most important step of testing before regulatory approval is sought. Having largely eliminated the spread of coronavirus inside its borders, Chinese drugmakers had to look abroad for places to test the efficacy of their vaccines. Together, they have rolled out Phase 3 trials in at least 16 countries. Sinopharm's two vaccine candidates, including the one approved in China, have rolled out Phase 3 trials in 10 countries, mostly in the Middle East and South America. Sinopharm chairman Liu Jingzhen said last month that dozens of countries have requested to buy the company's vaccines. He did not name the countries or elaborate on the amount of doses they proposed, but he said CNBG was capable of producing more than a billion doses in 2021. Compared with Pfizer and Moderna, Sinopharm's vaccines do not require freezing temperatures for storage, making transport and distribution much easier -- especially in developing countries that lack cold storage capacities. Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the number of "relative serious adverse reactions" to Chinese vaccine candidates. It is about two people per million among those inoculated.

  18. (CNN)A leading female Palestinian DJ has been remanded in custody for 15 days after she was arrested by Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces for performing at a party at a Muslim holy site, leading to claims of official over-reaction to an event that sparked furious scenes over the weekend. PA security forces detained DJ Sama Abdul Hadi and several others at the party on Saturday at Nabi Musa, the site where Moses is believed to be buried, which lies in the West Bank between Jerusalem and Jericho. Videos were posted on social media of the event, sparking anger from local Palestinians. This footage, together with reports of partygoers drinking and taking drugs at the holy site, prompted hundreds of people to descend on the party to break it up. Many were also angry with the PA for allowing it to go ahead. PA Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh has said an investigation is underway and that those responsible for the event would be brought to justice. Hadi Mashal, a lawyer representing Abdul Hadi, told CNN she is being charged for violating article 275 of the Palestinian penal code, which criminalizes the "desecration" of holy sites or symbols done with the intent to insult a religion or particular group. "Is she in violation of the article to date? All I can tell you is; I don't see how," Mashal said. "But the investigation is still not over. We hope it will be completed in a few days." The DJ's father, Saad Abdul Hadi, told CNN he was very disturbed by his daughter's detention, and rejected claims she had desecrated a holy site, saying the party had taken place in another part of the compound. "It's not true that people were drunk or taking drugs," he said. "It is also not true that she was playing techno music at the mosque -- in fact no one entered the mosque. It was all held in the bazaar, where visitors come to shop and to stay at the guesthouse." Saad Abdul Hadi said his daughter was being singled out by the PA to hide its embarrassment over public reaction to the party. "It seems the Palestinian Authority didn't know how to control the anger of the street, so they used Sama as a scapegoat for something the street saw as a mistake." Saad Abdul Hadi added that his daughter had been commissioned by a Paris-based production company to perform at a number of Palestinian historical sites, and had received permission from the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which is responsible for the bazaar at Nabi Musa, unlike the site's mosque which is handled by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. CNN has obtained a letter from the tourism ministry, granting DJ Sama and the production company permission to film at Nabi Musa, as long as they "adhere to the necessary safety measures" and "respect the site's religious and cultural significance and privacy." Abdul Hadi has also been charged for violating Covid-19 procedures, according to her lawyer. CNN has reached out to the Ministry of Tourism for comment. PA Prime Minister Shtayyeh is also the minister for religious affairs. But prominent religious figures have been quick to denounce the techno party, in an indication of how highly charged the episode has become. The Nabi Musa complex, the holy site where Moses is believed to be buried, which lies in the West Bank between Jerusalem and Jericho. Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the PA's supreme judge and adviser to its president on religious affairs and Islamic relations, said in a tweet: "I feel disgusted and angry about what happened in the Nabi Musa Mosque ... and I still don't know who is responsible for this sin, but whoever is responsible must receive a deterrent penalty commensurate with the atrocity of what happened, because the Mosque is the House of God, and its sanctity is the sanctity of our religion." In an interview with Palestinian radio station NAS Radio, Hussam Abu-Alrub, the deputy minister of religious affairs, stated that it was his ministry who was responsible for the Mosque, and yet no permission was taken to hold any event inside it. "The act that was committed was unacceptable and outside all of our religious principles," Abu-Alrub added. "We at the Ministry of Awqaf will not stay quiet and will be following up with the investigation." DJ Sama is one of the most po[CENSORED]r DJs in the region, and among the first Palestinian female to gain major prominence in the electronic music community. A petition for her release has already gained over 50,000 signatures, and the hashtag #FreeSama has gone viral on social media, with users describing her detention as an attack on artistic freedom. Her lawyer urged people to look at the facts. "If she wasn't given a license, the event wouldn't have happened. Period," Mashal said. "Therefore, who's responsible for not thinking about what the reaction would be? I don't know. Is it Sama's fault? That remains to be seen."
