It has been a debate since yesterday if the iPhone X will be compatible with iOS 17. Earlier rumors suggested that Apple will drop support for the operating system on all A11 devices, which includes the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus. Today, another leak coined that all iPhone models that support iOS 16 will be compatible with iOS 17. While the final word rests with Apple, a new leak claims that iOS 17 Control Center will feature major changes on iPhone. One of the prominent additions coming with iOS 17 is the Control Center, slated to feature major changes Apple has announced that it will be hosting its WWDC 2023 event from June 5 to June 9. Apple will also announce its forthcoming updates for the Apple Watch, Apple TV, Mac, and iPad. However, the highlight of the event will potentially be iOS 17. At this point, it is unclear if iOS 17 will bring front-facing changes to the table, as details on the operating system have been scarce. EVO Japan is upon us, and Bandai Namco’s development team has been working hard developing new content for the upcoming Tekken 8. Earlier in the week, the team released a trailer for returning character Ling Xiaoyu, and there are not one but TWO character trailers today. Let’s break this news down as it's still fresh off the press. First off, and probably the more controversial of the two, is Leroy Smith, Tekken 7’s 10th DLC character, who makes his return as a base game character this time around. Something particularly notable is that he made it as a returning character before any of the base game newcomers last time around (Claudio Serafino, Shaheen, Gigas, to name a few). Leroy comes with a gameplay trailer, which you can view below. Leroy Smith maintains many of the Wing Chun attacks he sported in Tekken 7 and got a couple of newer tricks up his sleeve here. First off, he has more than one attack with his cane (though, it’s unclear if they’ll retain the once-per-match properties it had in 7), and several of his older attacks have more cinematic follow-ups. Leroy’s Rage Art, as well as his various Heat System attacks, were also on display here. Hopefully, Bandai Namco learns from the last time Leroy released and doesn’t absurdly outclass everyone on the roster immediately. Secondly, Tekken 8 sees Asuka Kazama added as a returning fighter. She’s been here since Tekken 5 and, except for the live-action movie appearances, has been in Tekken media ever since. Originally shown as a cousin to series regular Jin Kazama, she fights using Mishima Style traditional karate. Bandai Namco revealed her at EVO Japan earlier today, and you can watch her gameplay trailer below. Visual redesign aside, Asuka Kazama appears to have a follow-up system to several of her attacks in this game (a trait Claudio had in Tekken 7). Here, it either extends some moves or alters the properties of others. Asuka also retains a few of her defensive traits, including redirecting her opponent’s attacks. Her Rage Art and Heat System attacks were also put on display here, too. Leroy and Asuka bring the current roster to 12 characters, and Leroy’s presence alone makes it possible that characters from Tekken 7 may not be one-offs that disappear after a single game. However, it’s very possible that other DLC characters may make a return, but we’ll update once we know for sure. Tekken 8’s release date is currently not known, but it’s scheduled to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Po[CENSORED]r insurrection The civic fervor of the people of Guayaquil exploded in a po[CENSORED]r insurrection, and the Cabildo and the entire town _echoing the action of arms_ ignored the Flores government and named a Provisional Government made up of José Joaquín Olmedo, Vicente Ramón Roca and Diego Noboa, in representation of the former departments of Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca, respectively. The triumvirate of Olmedo, Roca and Noboa was maintained until the National Convention met (October 1845), in charge of reorganizing the Republic. The Provisional Government then appointed General Antonio Elizalde as General in Chief of the Army and, under the inspiration of Olmedo, imposed the new national symbols -shield and flag- with the light blue and white colors of Guayaquil. The first step that the Governing Board carried out was to spread the revolutionary movement along the entire coast, to then continue towards the mountains. Flores arranged for Otamendi to take charge of ending the revolt. However, the government's actions were useless, because the people of Guayaquil went to the barracks to participate in the fight. Otamendi and his forces advanced to the La Elvira hacienda, owned by Flores, in Babahoyo. On May 3, the Guayaquil forces commanded by General Elizalde also arrived in that area, besieging the government supporters entrenched there by land and water. Flores himself was present at his hacienda to confront the revolutionaries. However, by then General Juan Illingworth and his men had already joined the revolutionary cause. Thus, riots also broke out in Alausí, Loja, Cuenca, Cayambe, Tabacundo and Machachi in favor of the process, with which Flores's communications with Quito were cut off. The Encyclopedia of Ecuador details that on May 16, José María Urbina, already promoted to General, left Portoviejo in command of the II Division of the Army made up of 1,200 chosen men, making his triumphant entry into Guayaquil on the 27th of the same month. His presence in Guayaquil decided the military fate of the civil war. Then the revolutionary forces were placed under the command of General Fernando Ayarza, who applied all his military experience _acquired during the struggles for independence_ to finally achieve, after fierce fighting, the capitulation of the government forces. Before his surrender, Flores demanded that a treaty also be signed through which benefits are provided for him and all his followers. Intel has just unveiled its next-generation Xeon Data Center CPU roadmap for 2023-2025 featuring brand new P-Core & E-Core chip families. Intel Xeon Roadmap 2023-2025 Official: Emerald Rapids Followed By Granite Rapids & Sierra Forest Followed By Clearwater Forest Intel has segmented its next-gen Xeon Data Center CPU lineup into two categories, P-Core & E-Core. The P-Core products will be the standard Xeon products that we have seen over the years. Then we have the E-Core products which will utilize the more energy-efficient architectures & the first product is expected next year in the form of Sierra Forest. The follow-up to Intel's 4th Gen Sapphire Rapids CPU lineup comes in the form of the 5th Gen Xeon family, codenamed Emerald Rapids. The Emerald Rapids-SP CPUs are already sampling and are on schedule to deliver in Q4 2023. These chips will offer higher-quality silicon with volume validation in progress. Other features of the Emerald Rapids-SP lineup include a focus on higher performance/watt in the same power envelope, delivering increased core density gen-on-gen. The chips will be fully compatible with the existing 4th Gen Eagle Stream platform, allowing for easy migration from the previous generation. The 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processor (code-named Emerald Rapids) is Intel's next Performance-core (P-core) product. At an investor webinar on March 29, 2023, Intel announced the 5th Gen Xeon, which is sampling to data center customers and going through volume validation. (Credit: Intel Corporation) Emerald Rapids is expected to make use of the Raptor Cove core architecture which is an optimized variant of the Golden Cove core that will deliver 5-10% IPC improvement over Golden Cove cores. It will also pack up to 64 cores & 128 threads which is a small core bump over the 56 cores & 112 threads featured on Sapphire Rapids chips. Intel Emerald Rapids-SP (64-Core SKU) - 320 MB L3 + 128 MB L2 = 448 MB Total Cache AMD EPYC Genoa (64-Core SKU) - 384 MB L3 + 96 MB L2 = 480 MB Total Cache Intel Sapphire Rapids-SP (60-Core SKU) - 112.5 MB L3 + 120 MB L2 = 232.5 MB Total Cache Emerald Rapids-SP Xeon CPUs will be peaking out at 64 cores and available in 1S/2S server configurations. The 4S-8S platforms will have to wait till the next-generation Granite Rapids-SP Xeon chips for an upgrade. But with that said, one key area that is expected to see a huge boost on Emerald Rapids-SP Xeon CPUs is the L3 cache. It is reported that the Emerald Rapids-SP CPUs will pack up to 320 MB of L3 cache. This is 2.84x higher than the 112.5 MB L3 cache featured on the top Sapphire Rapids-SP chip, the Xeon 8490H. Intel Next-Gen Xeon Scalable Processors Codenamed Granite Rapids After Emerald Rapids, Intel plans to move to a brand-new Xeon Data Center CPU family & platform that will come in the form of Granite Rapids. The new processors are on schedule for delivery in '24 and will be closely following Sierra Forest. The Granite Rapids-SP CPUs will utilize the latest x86 CPU architecture based on the Intel 3 process node. This is expected to be known as the Redwood Cove core. Intel did tease a high-level overview of its Granite Rapids-SP CPU during its 'Accelerated' keynote which featured three tiles for compute and two I/O dies at the top and sections of the interposer. The chip is expected to feature over 100 P-Cores but the exact core counts haven't been officially revealed. Featuring support on the Mountain Stream & Birch Stream platforms, the Granite Rapids-SP Xeon CPUs will further increase core densities, memory, and I/O innovations such as support for DDR5-8800 MCR RDIMMs. The new memory will provide 83% peak bandwidth and deliver up to 1.5 TB/s bandwidth to the platform. Intel even showcases a demo of an early Granite Rapids-SP chip running DDR5-8000 MT/s memory on a dual-socket platform (2S) and showing great health: At the same time as Intel launches its Granite Rapids-SP Xeon CPUs, Chipzilla will also be releasing its first-gen E-Core products codenamed Sierra Forest which have already achieved excellent silicon health and are on schedule for delivery in the first half of 2024. The Last of Us Part I releases on PC today, which of course means lots of hype from the usual sources. You can check out a launch trailer from Sony showing off the game’s new PC features like Photo Mode, ultra-wide support, and more. Meanwhile, AMD has posted a trailer of their own (they’ve partnered with Sony for TLOU Part I) showing off the game running at 4K at Ultra settings on a Radeon RX 7900 XTX with FSR 2.2 on and off (don't worry NVIDIA fans, the game also supports DLSS 2). With FSR deployed the game can reach over 120fps, although it seems somewhat inconsistent, dropping at low as the 70fps range. Is this a hint the game isn’t that well-optimized? Well, about that… The last of Us Part I currently has a “Mostly Negative” 36 percent user score on Steam, with players complaining the game is poorly optimized, stuttery, and prone to crashes. This excerpt from user JackStillAlive seems to capture the general sentiment. “Another shoddy port by Iron Galaxy (of Batman Arkham Knight and [Uncharted] Collection fame) with absolutely awful HW utilization (more CPU bound than most RTS games), stuttery mouse camera movement (same issue from UC Collection), lack of Screen Dirt Effect setting toggle, and general lack of optimization.” As mentioned, the port of The Last of Us Part I was handled by Iron Galaxy, a studio I myself have found to be extremely inconsistent. For instance, they recently helped develop the excellent Metroid Prime Remastered, but also worked on the disastrous Batman: Arkham Knight PC port and a series of generally lousy original games like Extinction and Rumbleverse. Their name on a project isn’t a curse, but it isn’t exactly a guaranteed seal of quality, either. Here’s hoping these early PC hiccups can be ironed out as quicky as possible. Haven’t been keeping up with The Last of Us Part I? Wccftech’s Kai Powell found the PS5 version to be an excellent update, save for the removal of multiplayer, in his full review… “The Last of Us Part I is a testament to how timeless this Cormac McCarthy-inspired tale is. Fully remade for Sony’s latest console generation, if this is the first chance a player has to experience the post-outbreak tale, it’s without a doubt the best version to play. Both visual and mechanical enhancements bring this title to life as no other Naughty Dog game has done before.
