  10. Rabat - Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs Ahmed Al-Tawfiq has announced that 6,048 mosques in Morocco are equipped with energy-efficient devices, noting that the development is in line with an energy rehabilitation framework his ministry worked on in 2014. The energy rehabilitation program was originally set up by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs and the Ministry of Energy Transition, with a budget of MAD 97 million. The minister said he hopes there will be another 1,980 mosques included in the project before the end of 2023. Al-Tawfiq announced the latest update on the Green Mosque project during a session at the House of Councillors, the upper house of the Moroccan parliament. Mosques that follow the framework will have the opportunity to be awarded under five different categories that recognize this green mosque initiative. To be classified as a Green Mosque there must be evidence that they are utilizing equipment such as low-consumption lamps, solar water heaters, and photovoltaic panels. Currently, there are 1,000 mosques functioning on energy-efficient equipment, that have been classified as Green Mosques. Under the same framework, the ministry also emphasized the need to raise awareness of energy-efficient techniques, which involves training staff and administration. The move aims to prioritize measures that reduce energy consumption, as the “population is being sensitized to the issues of energy efficiency and renewable energy,” Green Mosques' official website stated. The work has been possible thanks to the individuals working in the buildings such as imams, women preachers, and the employees at the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE), the same source explained. This is not the first time that mosques in Morocco have implemented a green strategy. In 2016, 600 mosques made the change to use renewable energy. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/12/353161/6-048-moroccan-mosques-equipped-with-energy-efficient-tools

  12. Rabat - The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has lauded Morocco's World Cup performances and called on other African countries to learn from the North African kingdom. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Johannesburg, Motsepe argued that Morocco's historic run at the Qatar World Cup was a logical result of the colossal investments the country has injected in advancing its football. He added that other African countries could achieve the same success when “governments and their football associations work hand-in-hand to develop the game.” Morocco has “opened the door and made us proud,” the CAF president said, urging the rest of the continent to get inspiration from Moroccan football. Morocco’s success in Qatar was “not by coincidence,” he said, adding: “Many African countries should learn from Morocco and be inspired by their investments.” With Morocco having lifted the curse of the quarter-finals that had long hovered over African teams at the World Cup, Motsepe said he is now confident that an African team can do as well as Morocco in 2026 or even win the global tournament. The CAF chief's comments come after Morocco's Atlas Lions defied all odds at the Qatar World Cup, knocking out several high-ranked teams and becoming the first African and Arab team to reach the semi-finals. The Moroccan Lions received a hero homecoming celebration when they came back from Qatar on Tuesday. Upon the team's arrival in Rabat, thousands of fans lined the capital's streets to welcome their national heroes. King Mohamed VI also hosted the national team and decorated them with royal wissams. The King also decorated head coach Walid Regragui and the head of Morocco’s Football Federation (FRMF), Fouzi Lekjaa. © Morocco World News. All Rights Reserved. 13. Rabat - Arabic is a language rich in culture and history. Delving deeper into this fascinating language uncovers some surprising facts. Here is a selection of five of the most surprising facts about Arabic. One of the most difficult languages There are around 313 million Arabic speakers across 25 countries according to Babel, who also wrote that Arabic is the second most difficult language to learn for English speakers. One aspect of the language that non-natives struggle with is pronunciation, as Arabic has many phonetic sounds that Latin-based languages simply do not have. Mastering sounds such as the “ghain,” and “ain” is difficult, as they are glottal sounds that do not exist in English. Nevertheless, the popular language learning app Duolingo stated that nearly four million of its users chose to study Arabic last year landing it 10th place among the most learned languages on the application. Choosing Arabic can come down to a variety of reasons. Some dedicate their learning to religious reasons with the aim of understanding and reciting the Quran. Others may choose the language for career reasons, as there are approximately 375 million Arabic speakers in the world, which means that understanding the language could open up new job opportunities. Arabic words in English At first glance, it is easy to assume there are no connections between the English and Arabic languages. However, there are many English words that originate from Arabic, one of which is the word alcohol, as the term in fact originates from the Arabic word ‘Al- Kuhool’. The word alcohol comes from ‘kohl’ which was used to describe the chemical powder mixture used as makeup in the Egyptian era, which was later found to cause lead poisoning. Yet the term was not used to describe alcohol as we know it, that only came into practice in the 18th century. Other common words that come from Arabic include hazard, giraffe, jar, and algebra. The term algebra stands as an example of how the Arabic language has long been forming fundamental concepts that we have today. Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi wrote the famous “Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing around the year 820. Featured prominently in the book, the Arabic word “al-Jabr” was adopted into English as Algebra. The history of Arabic Arabic remains largely unchanged in the last 1400 years, unlike other languages that have seen drastic alterations over time such as English. The most notable change in the classical form of Arabic is that in the past it did not have symbols or dots marking the letters, which is now a feature used to distinguish between many similar letters in the Arabic alphabet, such as the letters baa, taa, and thaa. Why is Arabic written from right to left? The direction of writing from right to left is called dextrosinistral. Languages that follow this direction of writing are based on a different alphabet known as Aramaic, which both Hebrew and Arabic share a connection with. The Aramaic alphabet was prevalent throughout the Middle East in the ninth and tenth centuries. The language of the first-ever university Arabic was the language taught at the first-ever university in the world. Al Qaraouiyine University in Fez was founded by Fatima bint Muhammad Al-Fihriya. The classes focused on classical Arabic and grammar. The university, which dates back to the year 859, was also home to the oldest library in the world. The institution is still open to this day. Read Also: Fatima Al-Fihri: The Mother of Moroccan Intellectuals Arabic and its dialects Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) or Fousha is only the linguistically binding formation that many Arabic dialects are formed from. The most spoken Arabic dialects are Egyptian (Masri), Gulf (Khaliji), Maghrebi (Darija), and Levantine (Shami) among others. Within each country, there is an even more diverse breakdown of dialects and accents. In Morocco, for example, the dialect of Darija spoken in the north of the country can differ wildly from the one spoken by inhabitants in the south. Darija is made up of Arabic, French, Spanish and Amazigh influences, the influence of which differs from region to region. Many refer to the dialect as a “spoken language” because it has evolved over the years and does not have official codified rules that you find with Standard Arabic. Despite this, the dialect has conventions and rules that are widely understood by its speakers, despite the lack of officialization. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/12/353098/the-arabic-language-five-surprising-facts-you-need-to-know

  14. Rabat - It is hardly surprising to learn that tech titans are racing to develop artificial intelligence (AI) systems to help with facial recognition on smartphones, voice assistants, self-driving cars, and robots. The goal of a Moroccan artificial intelligence engineer is to create software that can think like a human and provide solutions to challenging problems. Most of the time, AI research is slow and laborious, and it takes tremendous skills and knowledge to work in the field. As an AI professor, one question frequently posed to me is, "Do you think there is a future for an artificial intelligence engineer in Morocco?" An engineer's responses often entail comprehending and analyzing how the human brain functions concerning a particular issue to provide the best feasible solution using computer programs. To answer the question of prospective AI engineers in Morocco, a few topics need to be discussed. Requirements Technical skills and knowledge, as well as teamwork, are essential for managing projects effectively and consulting outside specialists, making them must-have skills for future AI engineers. The nature of the job demands high-level goals and constant self-evaluation of one's performance, the person must also be extremely meticulous and tenacious. The engineer must have strong interpersonal skills because to construct an expert system they must gather expert information and formalize their knowledge. Thus, having human and communication skills will be very helpful in an AI engineer’s career. To develop a highly effective system, an AI engineer must first make a list of comprehensive requirement specifications that the AI system must perform. The engineer needs to be highly skilled in terms of technical knowledge, including command of automated systems, management of programming languages, and the ability to solve complex artificial intelligence problems (such as file deletion, text analysis tools, and understanding of natural language), and participation in projects involving information applications in particular. As a result, the importance of research is to increase knowledge in digital sciences, data sciences, and automatic language processing and implement and validate artificial intelligence methods and algorithms, which calls for a particular level of mathematical rigor. AI engineer roles are sought-after, this is because the technology is new and there is hesitation from public and private institutions to offer high-quality training in this area. Necessary training and qualifications To become an AI engineer, you must have a minor level BAC+5 degree (equivalent to a master’s degree). Some engineering schools and institutions like the University of Mohammed VI Polytechnique, the ENSIAS (Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Informatique et d'Analyse des Systemes), EMI (Ecole Mohammadia d'Ingenieurs, etc.) provide degrees in computer science and system management that integrate into the AI field. There are also academic programs that provide entry into this field (a doctorate, for instance, following an engineering degree, or even a master's in artificial intelligence in the Faculty of Science at Moroccan universities or the Hassania School of Public Works, etc.). More importantly, private schools are open and provide highly technical and specialized courses directly related to artificial intelligence, thanks to these institutions' ability to quickly adjust their educational offerings to meet the market demands for such professionals. Like EDVANTIS Higher Education Group with the engineering school (ISGA: the higher institute of business and engineering). Cauchy and promotion Moroccan artificial intelligence engineers frequently start with technical jobs before evolving into encroachment-related roles. They are typically integrated into research cells. After gaining some experience, they might advance to project manager, however, artificial intelligence projects are now relatively uncommon. Depending on the project, the artificial intelligence engineer collaborates with statisticians, automatic programmers, psychologists, designers, and ergonomists. The salary of an artificial intelligence engineer varies depending on the company's industry, the project they are working on, and their level of experience in the AI field. Finally, artificial intelligence is an evolving industry and has many years ahead of it. The field continues to captivate people and generate excitement around the world. With the skills and strategies established, students and prospective AI engineers need ideas regarding their career direction. They can decide on their choice, which also answers the first half of their question. However, for the second half, fortunately for us, the Moroccan government has taken the lead in technological innovation and already offers several training programs in this field. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/12/353092/is-being-an-ai-engineer-a-good-career-choice-in-morocco

  16. There are 1.9 million vehicles on the road today with incorrect numbers on their odometers, according to Carfax. That is up 7 percent from a year ago. While California has the most of these kinds of vehicles on the road today, the rate of increase was especially high in Texas, Florida, and Arizona. Digital odometers can make it easier to falsify a dashboard reading but also harder to get away with it if someone takes the time to investigate. Used-car prices continue to decline in the U.S., but that doesn't mean everything on the secondhand market is running perfectly. One unfortunate, old-fashioned trend that's making a bit of a comeback is odometer fraud. The digital age has, in some instances, made it easier than ever to roll back time. Almost 2 million vehicles on the road today have an odometer number that's been reduced in some way, according to a new report from Carfax. The 1.9 million incorrect readings represent a 7 percent increase from last year, Carfax said. As the largest car market in the U.S., it's not a surprise that California has the most affected vehicles—more than 437,000, Carfax said—but that number is only 2 percent higher than last year. There were three states in the top 10 with the most affected cars that saw double-digit growth in odometer fraud in the past 12 months: Texas (up 15 percent), Florida and Arizona (both up 12 percent). These rollbacks can have a real impact, causing buyers to lose an average of $4000 in value with their purchase, not counting any unexpected maintenance costs, Carfax said. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been tracking odometer fraud for decades. In 2002, it said there were around 450,000 cases of odometer fraud reported each year and that these misreported numbers ended up costing used-car buyers over a billion dollars a year. NHTSA said there is about a 3.5 percent chance that a car will have its odometer messed with in the first 11 years of its life. As we wrote in 2018, the digitization of vehicle odometers introduces a host of other factors to an odometer rollback, as so many other parts of the car use that number. This, plus increased data capture by auto repair shops and other sources, mean that even if the odometer is messed with, there are now more ways to confirm any changes. In 2021, NHTSA changed its rules for required ongoing odometer reporting so that any vehicle built in or after the 2011 model year now needs to be tracked for 20 years instead of just 10, as it was before. NHTSA said it made this change because the average age of the car on the road was increasing, and a change in the rules was required "to address an increase in odometer fraud involving older vehicles." How to Protect Yourself If you are looking to purchase an older vehicle with a mechanical odometer, there are some key things to look out for, NHTSA said. Ask for the title to see what the officially reported odometer reading is, and make sure that that detail is not difficult to read. If the car includes maintenance records, especially oil changes, they can be a good start to estimating accurate mileage. For relatively new vehicles (with under 20,000 miles), the tires should be original. NHTSA also recommends getting a vehicle history report, which Carfax (unsurprisingly) offers as an organization interested in selling information about used cars to buyers. The group's Odometer Fraud Check compares your Vehicle Information Number (VIN) to information in state DMV databases of vehicles that have been reported as having their odometers falsely changed. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42271880/odometer-tampering-on-used-cars/

  17. Rabat - Croatia defeated Morocco 2-1 on Saturday to claim the 2022 World Cup’s bronze medal at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha. Scoring began very early on, with Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol placing a header into the back of Yassine Bounou’s net at the seventh minute. The Croats’ lead did not last long, as Moroccan defender Achraf Dari came back two minutes later to score another header from close range and put Morocco back in the game. Mislav Orsic put Croatia back in the lead at the 42nd minute after a shot that Bounou’s stretched hand could not quite reach. The second half saw both teams pushing into their oppositions’ halves, but solid defensive performances on both ends prevented another goal. Despite its elimination from the semi-final stage, Morocco’s national team entered history and will be leaving Qatar with heads held high for honorably representing Africa and the Arab world. Morocco defeated some global heavy-hitters, such as Belgium, Spain, and Portugal on their way to the top four. Despite an admirable performance against defending champions France, injuries and exhaustion combined with France’s attacking prowess to knock the Atlas Lions out. Read also: Thank You Atlas Lions: The Big Win We Already Won The game was also subject to officiating controversy, as Morocco’s football federation accused Mexican referee Cesar Ramos of robbing the team of two penalty opportunities. France will play Argentina at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday at 16:00 Moroccan time, with Les Blues hoping to become the first team to win consecutive World Cups since Brazil did so in 1962. Meanwhile, as the career of superstar Lionel Messi winds down, Argentina is searching for its first World Cup trophy since 1986 and its third overall. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2022/12/353085/morocco-finishes-fourth-in-world-cup-after-loss-to-croatia
