  13. https://www.techspot.com/news/92879-google-looks-bring-improved-connectivity-between-android-phones.html Having recently revealed plans to bring Android games to Windows PCs, Google is now showing some more love for Microsoft's OS by announcing Android features like Fast Pair and Nearby Share for Windows to enable better connectivity between the two platforms. The move comes as part of Google's wider plan to improve the Android ecosystem with smarter communication across devices, including Chromebooks and Wear OS smartwatches. Google had plenty to share regarding the present state and future ambitions for Android this week. In a blog post, Google highlighted existing and upcoming Android features, like instant setup and pairing between Chromebooks and Android phones, locking/unlocking devices with Wear OS smartwatches, and digital car key support for BMWs with Ultra-Wideband-enabled phones. The more interesting part of Google's announcement came at the end, where it revealed plans for deeper integration of Android devices with Windows PCs. Google has rarely shown love for Microsoft's OS, considering their rivalry, but the tide now seems to be turning. Not only are we getting Android games on Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs later this year, but also better Android-Windows integration with features like Fast Pair and Nearby Share for quickly setting up and pairing devices, Bluetooth accessories, syncing text messages, and sharing files. Plenty of third-party wired and wireless programs already bridge the Android-Windows connectivity gap. However, Google's implementation will likely be more seamless than existing solutions and could potentially cover a wide array of Android phones in the future. It might also push Microsoft to further improve the Your Phone app, that's currently built around owners of Samsung Galaxy and Surface devices. Interestingly, as was the case with Google's plan for Android gaming on Windows that ruled out a Microsoft partnership for the Play Games app, this productivity-focused integration of Android features also leaves out Microsoft from the action. Instead, Google says that it's working with Acer, HP and Intel to bring the experience to select Windows PCs later this year.

  14. https://www.techspot.com/news/92825-ease-2022-gpu-prices-no-longer-trending-upward.html We’ve all grown accustomed to the grim image of graphics cards selling for two to three times their MSRP. The most optimistic among industry leaders believe we still have six months before we’ll see prices trending downward, and the most current data suggests they’ll plateau at around 90 to 100 percent over MSRP until then. GPU pricing and availability was bleak in 2021, as we’ve noted in each one of our monthly reports. People who have been trying to upgrade their systems with one of Nvidia’s RTX 3000 series or AMD’s RX 6000 series graphics cards were faced with scalpers and cryptocurrency enthusiasts grabbing much of the available stock. Used GPU pricing has also been a nightmare, as it followed a similar trend as brand new GPUs. As we ease into 2022, there’s no sign of the situation improving in any significant way, but there are some reasons to keep hoping for it. For one, both AMD and Nvidia believe the supply of graphics cards will gradually improve this year. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is less optimistic in this regard, as Team Blue is readying its first wave of Alchemist GPUs which will intensify competition in the space but depend on limited foundry capacity just like current generation GPUs from the other two companies. According to German publication 3DCenter, GPU retail pricing seems to have plateaued. After reaching 91 to 92 percent above MSRP in December, it has now returned to November levels, with Nvidia’s RTX 3000 series cards sitting at 89 percent above MSRP. AMD’s RX 6000 series have seen a slightly higher dip to 85 percent above MSRP levels thanks to better availability. A Jon Peddie Research report last year highlighted a peculiar fact — graphics card shipments actually increased towards the end of 2021, which should have pushed prices down, at least in theory. Ethereum mining profitability has taken a small hit in December, but that doesn’t seem to have made any dent in the number of GPUs that are at work hashing transactions on the network. All in all, GPUs are still ridiculously expensive and will likely remain like that until Ethereum begins its major shift to a proof of stake model, which will render GPU mining obsolete or, at the very least, unprofitable. The protocol developers expect this to happen in June, but there’s always a possibility for further delays.

  16. https://www.pcgamer.com/intel-gut-punches-apple-by-hiring-engineer-that-led-transition-from-intel-based-macs-to-apple-silicon/ There's a mighty tug-of-war going on between the world's largest chipmakers, and it's not just for customers. Top staff will always be the difference maker, and Intel and Apple are constantly duking it out for the best engineering brains. This time Jeff Wilcox, once director of Mac system architecture, is heading back to Intel to join the Fellow and Design Engineering Group as chief technical officer. Best gaming monitor: pixel-perfect panels for your PC Best high refresh rate monitor: screaming quick screens Best 4K monitor for gaming: when only high-res will do Best 4K TV for gaming: big-screen 4K PC gaming That's bound to be a big blow for its Cupertino-based competitor, as Wilcox "led the transition for all Macs to Apple Silicon beginning with M1 chip", as his LinkedIn profile describes (via Tom's Hardware). Apple is determined to get rid of Intel-based Mac systems in favour of its own in-house designed chips, built out of ARM architectures, and Wilcox had a big part to play in that strategy working. It was, of course, successful, and Apple has since improved on the M1 with the M1 Max and M1 Pro. If You Like to Play on Your Computer, this Vintage Game is a Must-Have. No Install. Forge of Empires - Free Online Game Now Wilcox will head up a pivotal role at Intel, where he has worked previously, and will be leading up efforts on all architectures destined for Intel's client SoCs. That's a lot of chips, too. Mobile processors, most definitely, but it'll also play into Intel's new Foundry Services, which may one day adopt a more mix-and-match approach to SoCs with clients. Whichever way you cut it, it's a big role as Intel looks to larger onboard graphics, connectivity, and systems all integrated into a single package, and it's only going to get more important as the decade marches on. AppleInsider reports that Apple has been trying to keep its engineers on-side with large bonuses, though it's not known whether the company tried to retain Wilcox in such a manner. Apple's decision to leave Intel behind ruffled plenty of feathers at the x86 chipmaker, including CEO Pat Gelsinger, who said in an inaugural letter to staff that “We have to deliver better products to the PC ecosystem than any possible thing that a lifestyle company in Cupertino makes." Now that's fighting talk. This is going to be seen as a big win for Intel, especially with Gelsinger's plans to put the company back on top, and a bit of a gut-punch for Apple. It definitely feels more important than those cringey Apple bashing ads Intel has been running lately, anyways. Nowadays, as senior hardware editor at PC Gamer, he spends his days reporting on the latest developments in the technology and gaming industry. When he's not writing about GPUs and CPUs, you'll find him trying to get as far away from the modern world as possible by wild camping.
