The complexity of Rainbow Six Siege is both a blessing and a curse. When trying to get a handle on all 42 operators’ unique gadgets, the task of learning the intricacies and interactions between them all feels insurmountable. To help you better understand how different gadgets can interact with the map and compliment each other, we’ve broken down eight common gadget tricks that you’ll find in Siege. Bandit tricking is a strategy as old as Siege itself. A large part of Siege’s meta revolves around the struggle between defenders and attackers over the reinforced walls of the objective. Gaining access to far sight lines is a big advantage for the attackers, so the fate of a round sometimes hinges on a few key walls. To guard against the hard breaching power of Thermite and Hibana, Bandit’s batteries can electrify the walls and zap enemy gadgets dead. But if the attackers also bring along the EMP grenades of Thatcher, then Bandit’s batteries are typically destroyed before they can protect anything. https://www.pcgamer.com/rainbow-six-siege-gadget-tricks/

Every accessory company wants to be different—ironic, as these days many are producing largely similar products. You’ve got RGB keyboards, RGB gaming mice, and RGB headsets. So what’s the differentiator? Software. Every company these days has its own take on proprietary software that you use to download drivers and adjust settings. Arguably the first of the bunch was Razer, but every other manufacturer has followed suit. Some are made much better than others. There's a few things we looked for when evaluating these softwares: does it make you login to an account before you can tweak a setting, and does it require an internet connection? Is cloud storage an option, but not required? How annoying are the popups you get if you don't install right away? We’d like to point out that no USB-based accessory (like keyboard, mice, headset) should ever need a driver that requires a full system reboot. Requiring a system restart is now mostly a thing of historical requirements rather than modern Windows driver design stacks. Even GeForce driver updates don’t require a reboot. An RGB mousepad asking for a restart is next-level absurdity. https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-peripheral-software-ranked-by-annoyingness/

Christmas came early this year for Interplay co-founder and inXile Entertainment studio head Brian Fargo. In a series of tweets last month on X, "The Everything App," Fargo showed off industry sales awards and other Interplay goodies he had recently re-acquired. Over email, Fargo explained to me how they had left his possession in the first place, and the long march to get them back. First though: The trove itself. Most of the items Fargo showed off were sales awards for various Interplay games from the Software Publishers Association (now the Software and Information Industry Association) of "Don't Copy that Floppy" fame. The OG Baldur's Gate plaque, meanwhile, came from the Consumer Products Council, a decidedly less musical industry body. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fallout/after-20-years-of-patience-and-negotiations-rpg-vet-brian-fargo-has-bought-back-his-haul-of-old-school-treasures-from-fallout-baldur-s-gate-and-more-it-was-like-a-very-exciting-version-of-storage-wars/

Retailers reported a 0.5% rebound in July after the Euro 2024 football championship and summer discounting fuelled shopping. The increase follows a sharp fall in June, when sales volumes - which measure the quantity bought - were hit by poor weather. Department stores and shops selling sports goods shifted higher volumes of gear last month. But the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which released the figures, said it was a "poor month for clothing and furniture shops and falling fuel sales despite prices at the pump falling". https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c33nz5ky8v7o

An RAF veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder has told how looking after rescued farm animals had helped him cope. Wayne Eckersley created Eckson Sanctuary CIC with his partner Kenny Atkinson to help others facing mental health issues. The sanctuary is preparing to move about 150 animals from its current base in Sharnbrook, near Bedford, to Luton. He said having about 35 people volunteer to clear and start preparing the new site on Saturday had left him overwhelmed. The couple have a large number of alpacas, pygmy goats, sheep, birds, rabbits, turkeys and chickens that have come from other farms or from people who are no longer able to look after them. "I've always loved animals," Mr Eckersley said. "I personally went through a very bad episode of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety, and if it wasn't for these animals I don't know where I would be now. "They give and show you so much love, care and affection. That's what we want to pass on to others." Mr Eckersley said the logistics involved in moving the animals were "massive" but he had been left "overwhelmed from the response, kindness and everything we've been shown". https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy84evye1j2o

VinFast's three-row VF9, its second electric SUV, will start at $71,000 for the Eco trim, which has a 330-mile range. That price is $10,000 less than the previously listed base price, and all VF9s will come with a head-up display and heated driver's seat as standard. Deliveries of the 2024 VF9 are due to finally start in September. The VinFast VF9, the second electric SUV from the Vietnamese startup automaker, may finally go on sale soon. It's been roughly a year since VinFast announced range estimates for the three-row crossover, which was originally intended to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2023. Now VinFast has updated pricing for the VF9, slashing the cost by $10,000, as deliveries are expected to begin within the next month. While the previously listed base price for the VinFast VF9 was $81,000, VinFast is now advertising the VF9 at $71,000 for the most affordable Eco trim. The Plus trim costs $75,000 and gains luxurious extras like a panoramic glass roof, vegan leather upholstery, and second-row captain's chairs. The Plus also rides on 21-inch wheels instead of the Eco's 20 inchers and features 12-way power adjustable driver's seat with ventilation, memory, and massage functions, along with upgraded front passenger and second-row seating. All VF9s come standard with a 15.6-inch touchscreen, head-up display, heated driver's seat, and a 13-speaker sound system. VinFast says the VF9 will be shipped to dealerships in September, and despite the year being nearly three-quarters of the way done, initial sales of the VF9 will still be for the 2024 model year. The VF9 has been in the works for a while now, originally revealed back in 2021 as the VF e36, and VF9s have been spotted testing on U.S. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a61957786/2024-vinfast-vf9-price-deliveries/

few years ago, a highly respected executive at a leading European club made up his mind on João Félix while watching him play for Benfica. The potential was obvious, but an asking price of around £100m felt steep for a player who was not a certainty to make it at the very highest level. Speaking to an acquaintance at the game, the executive said he would not be able to justify himself to his bosses if Félix failed to perform. It was better, he explained, to let a club slightly lower down the food chain take the gamble and meet Benfica’s demands. The thinking was calculated like this: either Félix would develop into a more rounded player after leaving Benfica for one of Europe’s top leagues, at which stage the bigger club would feel comfortable that buying him for an even bigger fee would not be a risk or it would turn out that the executive’s instincts about the forward were right all along. Recruitment is never easy. While others stood aside, Atlético Madrid took the plunge and paid £113m for Félix after he helped Benfica to the Portuguese title in 2019. There was buzz and excitement, plus a sense that Atlético were heading towards a more refined style under the disciplined, defensive-minded Diego Simeone. Maybe it was a case of wrong time, wrong place. Although he was part of Atlético winning La Liga in 2021, he never truly looked at ease. Five years on, there were no tears about him moving to Chelsea for an initial €50m. It was a deal that suited everyone, assuming Enzo Maresca is capable of working out where to fit another creative player into his team and is capable of succeeding where Graham Potter and Frank Lampard failed with Félix when the 24-year-old spent the second half of 2022-23 on loan at Stamford Bridge. https://www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/aug/25/can-joao-felix-finally-find-a-home-at-chelsea

Interview Sunday with Susannah Constantine: ‘I wake up every morning with anxiety. I always have’ Margaret Hussey The writer and former TV presenter talks about cold water swimming, resisting chocolate and loving the quiet life Sun 25 Aug 2024 06.45 BST Share The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. Lie in or up early? I’m always an early bird, up at 6.30am. I wake every morning with anxiety – I have done all my life. Breakfast is broccoli and a tin of tuna. It’s important to get vegetables and protein in, especially at my age. If anyone asks to make me a cup of coffee, I’ll turn them down. I’m very particular, and make it strong enough to stand a spoon up. Do you exercise? I run at least three times a week, listening to music or the sounds of nature. We live in the South Downs. I also have a barrel of cold water that I just sit in like an idiot. In the winter, I’ll probably stay in for two minutes, temperature depending. To test, I shove a meat thermometer in. Else I’ll go down to the sea with friends. People roll their eyes when you say you like cold water swimming. But I’ve been doing it for about five years: it’s so good for you. Any visitors? The kids might come down, friends, my mother-in-law. Trinny [Woodall] doesn’t come so much, which I completely understand. We are very much town mouse, country mouse. I could never live in a city again. Peace is a privilege. Who else is home? We have an Italian greyhound and a Parson Jack Russell, plus two Bengal cats. We have had every kind of pet over the years: snakes, budgies, ponies. Now we have our own pet cemetery, and have friends’ dogs buried there as well as ours. Childhood Sundays? Very similar. I’m living the life now that I was always meant to live. It’s pretty antisocial, quite solitary. In the interim, Trinny and I had the madness of our career, which was amazing. But I think that was a 15-year diversion from where I really wanted to be. Sunday treat? Tonic water. I don’t drink, so get my fix from chocolate: I have a whole drawer in the fridge, which is filled with my favourites. That’s one of the main reasons I run. When’s bedtime? If I’m alone I can get into bed by 7.30pm; normally it’s 9pm. I’ll read. I’ve just finished All That Glitters by Orlando Whitfield. I’ve an idea for a novel and a nonfiction book – I love the freedom and solitude writing provides. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/article/2024/aug/25/sunday-with-susannah-constantine-i-wake-up-every-morning-with-anxiety-i-always-have

A nurse in Gaza has told the BBC his wife and six children - including a group of quadruplets - were killed in an attack in the central Gaza strip. "My entire family has been wiped out in an instant", says Ashraf El Attar, "leaving me with nothing". The nurse - who works at Gaza's European hospital - says his family home in Deir-al-Balah was hit in the early hours of Sunday morning. He survived with minor injuries. Israel has not spoken about this specific attack, but has said its forces were operating in the city. It says it only targets members of armed groups. Killed in the strike were Mr El Attar's wife - Hala Khattab, a teacher - and their six children - a 15-year-old boy, a one-year-old girl, and their four 10-year-old quadruplets. Speaking to BBC Arabic's Gaza Today podcast, the nurse says that around 6am on the morning of the attack he was getting ready for work when he "heard the alarm sound and suddenly lost consciousness". When he came to, Mr El Attar says he was in "severe pain" and the house "was in ruins". All the outer walls of their apartment building were destroyed. "I desperately called out for my children and my wife, but it was too late. "My six children, including four twins, and my wife were killed instantly in the attack," he says. The strike took them by surprise, Mr El Attar says. The night before, the family had spent time "enjoying a soap opera together", trying to "escape the harsh reality of war". https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyn31g50e3o

https://cdn.jwplayer.com/previews/90CvYAf1 Not long ago I played Last Call BBS, a puzzle anthology that included a minigame about assembling model robot kits—using tools to snip them off the plastic sprues, then connecting, painting, and even stickering them. I get a sense of the same pleasant tactility watching the release trailer for Retro Gadgets, an upcoming game that will let you build your own videogame handheld, calculator, digital pet, or chiptune starter kit. "Lose yourself as you build, solder, code, customise, and play with electrifying gadgets at your relaxing workbench", says the Steam page description. "Build video game consoles, weather machines, lightboards, radios, drum machines... any gadget you can think of. What will you come up with next?" If you can't think of what you'd like to build, Retro Gadgets will let you find projects other makers have shared via the Steam Workshop "Check out gadgets made by people all over the world", it says. "Download any gadget, play with it, take it apart, see how it works, build your own version." https://www.pcgamer.com/heres-a-game-about-soldering-and-tinkering-with-old-school-electronics/

The holidays are fast approaching, and it's time to get excited about spending time with your loved ones, eating all the food you want, and of course, going into a darkened room to play all the video games you missed earlier this year. Whether you're clearing out your backlog, or if you know you'll be getting a couple of new games in your stocking this year, you might also want to make sure your PC is up to the task. A new graphics card will have those games looking better, a new SSD will have them loading up quicker, some more RAM will let you do some more multitasking. There are a million sales this time of year, but the products on sale aren't always great. Below you'll find two things: 1. Our advice on where to look for hardware deals between now and the end of the year. 2. A guide to the hardware we recommend for putting together a powerful, affordable PC this holiday season. These will all be pieces of hardware we've recommended in our various buying guides across the site, so if you spot them on sale, you'll also know they have the PC Gamer seal of approval. https://www.pcgamer.com/holiday-hardware-deals-guide/

I'm glad to know that Borderlands 4 is on its way. Sure, the Borderlands sense of humor has worn a bit thin for me over the years, and sure, I think Claptrap is among the greatest torments ever inflicted on an undeserving humanity. When it comes down to it, though, I'm as much of a sucker for a bajillion procedurally generated guns as the next guy. Another Borderlands sequel is one I'll welcome. But damn, it sure seems like that Gamescom teaser was meant to coast in on a bigger wave of good will, yeah? It was a fine teaser, don't get me wrong. I want to know why that moon came out of that wormhole, and what the deal with that planet's big, shatterable cloaking field is, and what those alien glyphs at the end mean. That's compelling stuff! I'm compelled! https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/lets-all-just-pretend-that-the-borderlands-4-reveal-came-at-a-better-time/

Imran Khan, Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister, appears to be eyeing up a new role from behind bars – that of Oxford University chancellor. Mr Khan, who has been in prison for more than a year on charges he says are politically motivated, submitted his application ahead of the deadline on Sunday night, his adviser confirmed on X. The one-time cricket star is already an honorary fellow of Oxford’s Keble College, where he studied philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) in 1972. The University of Oxford gave no comment about the specific application and will not confirm the candidates for the position until early October with voting to be held online on 28 October. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c33n5dx20nno
