  6. WhirlwindFX, the developers of the free SignalRGB application for PCs, have been showcasing increasingly confident and impressive uses of their control and sync app. Last week at Pax West the firm demoed an expansive large screen 'display' that was formed from an array of 96 RGB LED backlit keyboards. The 'pixelated' keyboard display was recorded pumping out iconic animations like Nyan Cat, as well as the inevitable clip of Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up video. Controlling and syncing RGB LED packed devices on PCs can be a surprisingly tricky task, even in 2023. With the wide variety of similar (but different) apps from hardware makers like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock, Razer, EVGA, Cooler Master et al., those mixing components / peripheral brands sometimes have to deal with unexpected results. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/signalrgb-software-controls-96-keyboard-rgb-video-wall
  7. Just two weeks ago, the UK Civil Aviation Authority said it would be 'months rather than weeks' before UK passengers could play with their phone or tablet during take off and landing. However, it seems policy change might come sooner than we thought. Europe's aviation safety agency has promised to publish guidance on the use of personal electronic devices during all phases of flight by the end of November. The use of electronic devices during flight was just approved in the United States, but earlier this month, the CAA said that similar policy change would take longer because it's not just the UK's rules under consideration. Instead, the European Aviation Safety Agency needs to ensure European Airlines are bound by the same regulations in order to avoid confusion for passengers flying in Europe. Speaking in a statement released today, the EASA called the publication of this guidance a "major step" in the process of expanding the freedom to use personal electronic devices on-board aircraft. That said, ultimately, it will be up to individual airlines to assess whether passengers are allowed to use personal electronics (in 'Flight Mode') during all phases of flight. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/europe-in-flight-electronics-gadgets,25085.html
  8. Meta bills its Quest 3 as a transcendent device to navigate the Metaverse. According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the Quest 3 is “the first mainstream mixed reality headset.” It isn’t a mere virtual reality device that locks you into an environment with no way to see or interact with the real world around you. Instead, through the use of its forward-facing cameras, you’re able to feel like you’re part of the action around you, witnessing everything in full color for the first time – or at least for the first time on a Meta device. However, with a price tag of $499, a $200 increase over its Quest 2 predecessor, is the Quest 3 a game-changer in the mixed reality field, or is it merely an impressive technology demo for enthusiasts? https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/meta-quest-3
  9. In case you missed it, HyperBeard has officially launched Hamster Inn, the aptly named hotel management sim where you play as an adorable hamster struggling to make your establishment thrive. Filled to the brim with cute aesthetics and all the chonky hamsters you can ever hope for, the sim offers a cosy experience as you aim to please equally chonky animal guests with 5-star service. In Hamster Inn, you can look forward to upgrading your hotel and expanding your operations, all while decorating it to suit your tastes best. You'll not only serve animal businessmen (business-animals?) but also wide-eyed sailor frogs and harried Mama Ducks. You'll need to cater your services to keep them happy, then earn your reputation points to attract more guests to your hotel. Does that sound like it's exactly your cup of tea? If you're looking to hone your management skills even further, why not take a look at our list of the best tycoon games on Android to get your fill? https://www.pocketgamer.com/hamster-inn/out-now/
  10. A 36 year-old man from Kyoto Prefecture has been arrested by Japanese police for creating and selling rare varieties of Pokémon online. Yoshihiro Yamakawa, an interior decorator by trade, used an unspecified modification device to alter the stats and characteristics of Pokémon in the po[CENSORED]r Nintendo Switch title Pokémon Violet before offering them for sale, in an alleged violation of Japan's Unfair Competition Act. Yamakawa was selling the Pokémon on a third party site dedicated to selling in-game items and, per Japanese outlet NHK, posted adverts with text such as: "Now only! Order 6 monsters for 4,000 yen." That works out to just under $30, though over the period December 2022 to March 2023 other hacked Pokémon were sold for up to 13,000 yen ($85), and Yamakawa also offered custom orders. The police say that total sales of the "falsified data," aka black market Pokémon, run into the millions of yen. Police arrested Yamakawa on April 9 and during an interview he confessed to the charges, saying "I did it to earn a living." The investigation into his activities continues, though reading between the lines the authorities seem most concerned about the software Yamakawa was using, which apparently remains freely available. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/japanese-cops-bust-interior-decorator-that-moonlighted-selling-hacked-pokemon-i-did-it-to-make-a-living/
  11. An economist described as "one of the most influential theorists of her time" has had a blue plaque erected on her former west London home. Joan Robinson has been recognised with a plaque at 44 Kensington Park Gardens in Notting Hill. She lived at the address with her parents and sisters from 1919. While living there she volunteered to help unemployed people during the post-war depression - which was pivotal in her decision to study economics. Howard Spencer, senior blue plaque historian, described Robinson as a "trailblazer" for women in the economic field. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-68778371
  12. Maserati's all-electric Folgore lineup grows with the gorgeous new GranCabrio convertible, which will likely be a 2025 model. Based on the GranTurismo Folgore, the GranCabrio version boasts a tri-motor electric powertrain with 818 horsepower. [CENSORED]ceous sheetmetal and a posh cabin make the GranCabrio Folgore a real stunner. Expect a six-figure price tag and an on-sale date by year's end. The weather man in Maserati's hometown of Modena better be calling for a blue-sky summer because the Italian luxury automaker's latest EV is a soft-top convertible called GranCabrio Folgore. While the gas-powered GranCabrio debuted back in February in the waning days of winter, Maserati today pulled the covers off the Folgore variant in sunny Rimini, Italy. Meet the GranCabrio, a Gorgeous Droptop The GranCabrio Folgore, which is expected to be a 2025 model, is the electric variant of the gas-powered GranCabrio and is closely related to the GranTurismo Folgore coupe. So closely, in fact, that the two cars share a sculptural exterior design and an 818-hp electric powertrain. Powering its three electric motors is an 83.0-kWh battery pack. And we expect the powertrain to provide nearly identical performance to that of the GranTurismo Folgore. That suggests a 60-mph time of 2.7 seconds, a quarter-mile run under 11.0 seconds, and a driving-range estimate around 240 miles per charge. Like its coupe twin, the GranCabrio Folgore uses the brand's 800-volt architecture and uniquely shaped battery pack that's not a flat-panel typical of EVs. Instead, this T-shaped pack is designed to fit inside what would otherwise be the transmission and driveline tunnel, helping to avoid the sort of tall-in-the-saddle seating height of EV cars with the traditional layout. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60482190/2025-maserati-grancabrio-folgore-revealed/
  13. A hotel undergoing major renovations has pledged to give its old furniture to a military charity. The Northampton Town Centre Hotel, on Silver Street, said it would hand over beds, tables and other furniture to the local branch of SSAFA. The charity was chosen to benefit after it won a BBC Dragon's Den-style event to pitch for the furniture. Gareth Bull, from SSAFA, said the donations would allow the charity to support local veterans. SSAFA, the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families Association, provides a welfare, health and support services for serving and current personnel from the British armed forces. The furniture would otherwise have ended up in landfill but will now be used to benefit those leaving the forces and settling back into civilian life. "We often encounter extended waiting periods for furniture items, particularly beds. With this donation, our volunteers can respond to our clients' needs within 24 hours, if required," said Mr Bull. Simon Smith, manager of the Northampton Town Centre Hotel, said: "Those leaving the armed forces aged 25-60 need more specialised support than ever before. "The challenges they face are complex - from low income to life-changing injuries or hidden wounds, like depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. "SSAFA is improving its services for younger, working-age veterans, and we are proud to play our part." https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-northamptonshire-68821996
  14. Humberside Police has confirmed it is searching for a lizard after it was taken from a Hull pet shop. The gargoyle gecko, and its enclosure, went missing from The Exotics Hub on Friday 5 April. CCTV footage from the shop showed a woman entering before leaving with a small vivarium. Sarah Dixon, the owner of the store, said it was worth around £250 but the "welfare of the animal" was the most important issue. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cxez21yg0m8o
  15. You'd have got good odds on him winning the golden boot." That is what former Arsenal striker Alan Smith said of Chelsea's Cole Palmer on Sky Sports after the midfielder struck four goals in his side's 6-0 thrashing over Everton. Palmer was simply sensational, netting a hat-trick inside 29 minutes and adding his 20th Premier League goal of the season in the second half to move him level with Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot. It is all the more remarkable considering before Palmer moved from Manchester City to Chelsea this summer the 21-year-old had never scored a league goal. Palmer also has nine assists from his 28 Premier League games this season, a chance conversion rate of 33% and a high shot accuracy of 67%, level with Newcastle's Alexander Isak. Both on-form forwards score a goal on average every 104 minutes played. Fast forward seven months and the England star could be on course to finish as the division's top scorer. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68823131
  16. Senior figures in Iran continue to warn Israel against retaliation A senior spokesperson for Iran’s military has warned the US, UK, France and Germany to stop supporting Israel, and said that there will be an even stronger response from Iran if Israel retaliates to the strikes at the weekend. The official state news agency IRNA reports that Brig Gen Abolfazl Shekarchi said: We remind the heads of state of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany to stop supporting the declining child-killing terrorist regime of Israel. The Islamic Republic of Iran has proven that it is not a warmonger and does not seek to spread the war. The response will be stronger if the regime carries out more severe aggressive act. Overnight a senior official briefed Al Jazeera that Iran had a broad range of options to use against Israel, and said that “its bullying and madly taken behavior towards Iran will not work.” A diplomatic read-out of a call between Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi and Qatar’s emir said that the Iranian leader had said “We now categorically declare that the smallest action against Iranian interests will certainly be met with a severe, widespread and painful response against all its perpetrators.” Al Jazeera also reports that on state TV in Iran, deputy foreign minister Ali Bagheri Kani said that his country would not wait 12 days to respond to another Israeli attack, but would retaliate in “a matter of seconds.” Iran launched over 300 strikes against Israel at the weekend in response, it said, to the destruction of its consulate in Damascus on 1 April, which it blames on Israel. The vast majority of the launches failed to reach their targets or were taken down by Israel’s air defence, aided by a coalition of partners including the UK and France. https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2024/apr/16/middle-east-crisis-live-israel-iran-gaza-latest-news-updates
