A cat (Felis catus), commonly referred to as the domestic cat or house cat, is a small domesticated carnivorous mammal. It is the only domesticated species of the family Felidae. Recent advances in archaeology and genetics have shown that the domestication of the cat occurred in the Near East around 7500 BC. It is commonly kept as a house pet and farm cat, but also ranges freely as a feral cat avoiding human contact. It is valued by humans for companionship and its ability to kill vermin. Its retractable claws are adapted to killing small prey like mice and rats. It has a strong, flexible body, quick reflexes, sharp teeth, and its night vision and sense of smell are well developed. It is a social species, but a solitary hunter and a crepuscular predator. Cat communication includes vocalizations like meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, and grunting as well as cat body language. It can hear sounds too faint or too high in frequency for human ears, such as those made by small mammals. It also secretes and perceives pheromones. Female domestic cats can have kittens from spring to late autumn in temperate zones and throughout the year in equatorial regions, with litter sizes often ranging from two to five kittens. Domestic cats are bred and shown at events as registered pedigreed cats, a hobby known as cat fancy. Animal po[CENSORED]tion control of cats may be achieved by spaying and neutering, but their proliferation and the abandonment of pets has resulted in large numbers of feral cats worldwide, contributing to the extinction of bird, mammal and reptile species. As of 2017, the domestic cat was the second most po[CENSORED]r pet in the United States, with 95.6 million cats owned and around 42 million households owning at least one cat. In the United Kingdom, 26% of adults have a cat, with an estimated po[CENSORED]tion of 10.9 million pet cats as of 2020. As of 2021, there were an estimated 220 million owned and 480 million stray cats in the world. Etymology and naming The origin of the English word cat, Old English catt, is thought to be the Late Latin word cattus, which was first used at the beginning of the 6th century.[4] The Late Latin word may be derived from an unidentified African language.[5] The Nubian word kaddîska 'wildcat' and Nobiin kadīs are possible sources or cognates.[6] The forms might also have derived from an ancient Germanic word that was absorbed into Latin and then into Greek, Syriac, and Arabic.[7] The word may be derived from Germanic and Northern European languages, and ultimately be borrowed from Uralic, cf. Northern Sámi gáđfi, 'female stoat', and Hungarian hölgy, 'lady, female stoat'; from Proto-Uralic *käďwä, 'female (of a furred animal)'.[8] The English puss, extended as pussy and pussycat, is attested from the 16th century and may have been introduced from Dutch poes or from Low German puuskatte, related to Swedish kattepus, or Norwegian pus, pusekatt. Similar forms exist in Lithuanian puižė and Irish puisín or puiscín. The etymology of this word is unknown, but it may have arisen from a sound used to attract a cat.[9][10] A male cat is called a tom or tomcat[11] (or a gib,[12] if neutered). A female is called a queen[13][14] (or sometimes a molly,[15] if spayed). A juvenile cat is referred to as a kitten. In Early Modern English, the word kitten was interchangeable with the now-obsolete word catling.[16] A group of cats can be referred to as a clowder or a glaring.[17] Taxonomy The scientific name Felis catus was proposed by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 for a domestic cat.[1][2] Felis catus domesticus was proposed by Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben in 1777.[3] Felis daemon proposed by Konstantin Satunin in 1904 was a black cat from the Transcaucasus, later identified as a domestic cat.[18][19] In 2003, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature ruled that the domestic cat is a distinct species, namely Felis catus.[20][21] In 2007, the modern domesticated subspecies F. silvestris catus sampled worldwide was considered to have likely descended from the Near Eastern wildcat (F. lybica), following results of phylogenetic research.[22][23][a] In 2017, the IUCN Cat Classification Taskforce followed the recommendation of the ICZN in regarding the domestic cat as a distinct species, Felis catus.[24] Evolution Main article: Cat evolution Skulls of a wildcat (top left), a housecat (top right), and a hybrid between the two. (bottom center) The domestic cat is a member of the Felidae, a family that had a common ancestor about 10 to 15 million years ago.[25] The evolutionary radiation of the Felidae began in Asia during the Miocene around 8.38 to 14.45 million years ago.[26] Analysis of mitochondrial DNA of all Felidae species indicates a radiation at 6.46 to 16.76 million years ago.[27] The genus Felis genetically diverged from other Felidae around 6 to 7 million years ago.[26] Results of phylogenetic research shows that the wild members of this genus evolved through sympatric or parapatric speciation, whereas the domestic cat evolved through artificial selection.[28] The domestic cat and its closest wild ancestor are diploid and both possess 38 chromosomes[29] and roughly 20,000 genes.[30] Phylogenetic relationships of the domestic cat as derived through analysis of nuclear DNA:[26][27] Felidae Pantherinae Felinae other Felinae lineages Felis Jungle cat (F. chaus) Black-footed cat (F. nigripes) Sand cat (F. margarita) Chinese mountain cat (F. bieti) African wildcat (F. lybica) European wildcat (F. silvestris) Domestic cat mitochondrial DNA:[31] Felis Sand cat (F. margarita) Chinese mountain cat (F. bieti) European wildcat (F. silvestris) African wildcat Southern African wildcat (F. l. cafra) Asiatic wildcat (F. l. ornata) Near Eastern wildcat Domestic cat Domestication See also: Domestication of the cat and Cats in ancient Egypt A cat eating a fish under a chair, a mural in an Egyptian tomb dating to the 15th century BC It was long thought that the domestication of the cat began in ancient Egypt, where cats were venerated from around 3100 BC,[32][33] However, the earliest known indication for the taming of an African wildcat was excavated close by a human Neolithic grave in Shillourokambos, southern Cyprus, dating to about 7500–7200 BC. Since there is no evidence of native mammalian fauna on Cyprus, the inhabitants of this Neolithic village most likely brought the cat and other wild mammals to the island from the Middle Eastern mainland.[34] Scientists therefore assume that African wildcats were attracted to early human settlements in the Fertile Crescent by rodents, in particular the house mouse (Mus musculus), and were tamed by Neolithic farmers. This mutual relationship between early farmers and tamed cats lasted thousands of years. As agricultural practices spread, so did tame and domesticated cats .[31][35] Wildcats of Egypt contributed to the maternal gene pool of the domestic cat at a later time.[36] The earliest known evidence for the occurrence of the domestic cat in Greece dates to around 1200 BC. Greek, Phoenician, Carthaginian and Etruscan traders introduced domestic cats to southern Europe.[37] During the Roman Empire they were introduced to Corsica and Sardinia before the beginning of the 1st millennium.[38] By the 5th century BC, they were familiar animals around settlements in Magna Graecia and Etruria.[39] By the end of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, the Egyptian domestic cat lineage had arrived in a Baltic Sea port in northern Germany.[36] The leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) was tamed independently in China around 5500 BC. This line of partially domesticated cats leaves no trace in the domestic cat po[CENSORED]tions of today.[40] During domestication, cats have undergone only minor changes in anatomy and behavior, and they are still capable of surviving in the wild. Several natural behaviors and characteristics of wildcats may have pre-adapted them for domestication as pets. These traits include their small size, social nature, obvious body language, love of play, and high intelligence. Since they practice rigorous grooming habits and have an instinctual drive to bury and hide their urine and feces, they are generally much less messy than other domesticated animals. Captive Leopardus cats may also display affectionate behavior toward humans but were not domesticated.[41] House cats often mate with feral cats.[42] Hybridisation between domestic and other Felinae species is also possible, producing hybrids such as the Kellas cat in Scotland.[43][44] Development of cat breeds started in the mid 19th century.[45] An analysis of the domestic cat genome revealed that the ancestral wildcat genome was significantly altered in the process of domestication, as specific mutations were selected to develop cat breeds.[46] Most breeds are founded on random-bred domestic cats. Genetic diversity of these breeds varies b etween regions, and is lowest in purebred po[CENSORED]tions, which show more than 20 deleterious genetic disorders.[47] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat

The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the quickest Korean car we've ever tested, hitting 60 mph in 3.0 seconds flat. That time makes Hyundai's 641-hp AWD EV a tenth of a second quicker than the Kia EV6 GT, and the N is 1.5 seconds quicker than the regular 320-hp dual-motor Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 N is also just as quick to 60 mph as the 2023 $128K Lucid Air Touring we tested previously, and it has an edge over the BMW i4 M50 and a Tesla Model 3 Performance. Welcome to Car and Driver's Testing Hub, where we zoom in on the test numbers. We've been pushing vehicles to their limits since 1956 to provide objective data to bolster our subjective impressions (you can see how we test here). Nothing sends a smartphone into airplane mode quite like the nutty acceleration of an electric vehicle. They're heavy, but their viciously instant torque delivery and direct-drive transmissions make for some rapid speed. Best of all, a hot hatch such as the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N we just tested, accelerates like a six-figure sports car but at a fraction of the cost. Impressively, the $67K electric N's 3.0-second rip to 60 mph is just three tenths of a second behind a 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 PDK. The last time a Hyundai put this much pressure on a Porsche, it was uninsured and tailgating someone on California's 405. For a short while, the 3.1-second 60-mph time of the speediest Kia EV6 GT we've tested earned it the crown as the quickest car from the Korean Hyundai/Kia group, but now that a high-performance trim has been added to the Ioniq 5 lineup this year, there's a new king. The N blows the previously quickest Hyundai's time out of the water, which was set by an Ioniq 6 with a 4.3-second 60-mph time. The track-focused 5 is also 1.5 seconds quicker than the more civilized 320-hp all-wheel-drive Ioniq 5 (4.5 seconds). In N guise, the Ioniq 5 wears 275/35ZR-21 Pirelli P Zero PZ4 summer tires wrapped around 21-inch forged-aluminum wheels. Every N is all-wheel drive, and among its myriad drive settings, including its ability to mimic mechanical gearchanges while making fake Elantra N exhaust noise, torque can be split front to rear 11 different ways. The quickest vehicle we've ever tested is the 2021 Ferrari SF90 Stradale, a 986-hp plug-in-hybrid rocket that completed its launch to 60 mph in 2.0 seconds. Owning such a capable machine will run you more than $700K, enough moola to buy each player on the first and second lines of the Pittsburgh Penguins an Ioniq 5 N—including the backup goalie. While the Ferrari is quicker than every car we've tested, it might surprise you what EVs Hyundai's 641-hp quasi-hatchback can beat to 60 mph. Because being the "quickest Hyundai" doesn't sound too bragworthy, consider this context: the Ioniq 5 N is quicker to 60 mph than the BMW i4 M50 and Tesla Model 3 Performance and also just as quick to 60 as a 2023 Lucid Air Touring, with an as-tested price of $128k, that packs an extra 340 pound-feet of torque. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW The N's 11.1-second quarter-mile at 123 mph is impressive too. That beats any AMG-badged EV we've tested, and it's a tenth behind the 834-hp Tesla Cybertruck Beast's time of 11.0 seconds flat. Against our favorite gas-powered hot hatches, the much heavier Ioniq 5 N destroys their quarter-mile times: Honda Civic Type R (13.5 seconds at 106 mph), Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition (13.0 seconds at 106 mph), and the Volkswagen Golf R with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (12.6 ticks at 110 mph). Of course, Hyundai's hardcore EV has roughly double the horsepower and costs more than all of them. Big Stoppers and Solid Range to Boot The quickest Korean car also has the biggest brakes ever used to stop a Hyundai. The 4849-pound Ioniq 5 N has 15.7-inch rotors up front, more than two inches larger than what's used on Hyundai's huge three-row Palisade SUV. From 70 mph, the Ioniq 5 stops in 153 feet. That's just two feet shorter than the 5345-pound Lucid Air Sapphire (151 feet) which uses humongous 16.5-inch discs. Still, that puts the 5 N in good company with Lucid's $250K EV. Against a vehicle in its segment, such as the 5001-pound Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance, the Ioniq 5 N stops five feet sooner from 70 mph and six feet sooner from 100 mph. The Ioniq 5 N delivers mega performance for its price, but its driving range also isn't as penalized as one might expect. During its 75-mph highway range test, the Ioniq 5 N made it 190 miles on a full charge, only 20 miles fewer than the 320-hp AWD Ioniq 5 we tested on the same loop. The N's ability to quickly recharge fits its speedy persona too. In our DC fast-charge test, it took 35 minutes to recharge its 84.0-kWh battery from zero to 90 percent. We can't make any promises, but perhaps the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has a few hearts left to break at our next annual Lightning Lap track event. The EV6 GT ran VIR's 4.1-mile Grand Course with a 3:04.9. Hopefully, we get to find out. HOLY HYUNDAI, BATMAN! https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60659411/2025-hyundai-ioniq-5-n-quickest-korean-car-ever-tested/

Aston Villa's defeat at Brighton left the door open for Spurs to make a late push for next season's Champions League but even a late comeback could not prevent a fourth successive defeat as Liverpool found form once more after their own recent slump. Mohamed Salah put his touchline bust-up with manager Jurgen Klopp at West Ham behind him to open the scoring with a far-post header from Cody Gakpo's cross after 16 minutes, Andy Robertson adding the second right on half-time when Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario could only push out the Egyptian's shot. Spurs lost discipline and Vicario had to separate team-mates Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal as they went off at half-time, with matters not improving for Ange Postecoglou's side as they were over-run after the break by a rampant Liverpool. Follow live text and radio coverage of Sunday's Premier League action How did you rate Liverpool's performance? Have your say here What did you make of Tottenham's display? Send us your views here Gakpo headed the third from Harvey Elliott's delivery five minutes after the interval, the latter getting on the scoresheet himself in the 59th minute with a glorious curling finish from 20 yards into the top corner. Liverpool then inexplicably switched off to allow substitute Richarlison and Heung-Min Son to give Spurs unlikely hope but it was too late and they remain seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa with a game in hand. Liverpool rediscover cutting edge Liverpool may have ended this game, remarkably, with some anxiety around Anfield but for an hour they were back to their imperious, threatening best. Tottenham's two goals gave the scoreline a closer look than Liverpool's performance deserved but they were never in serious danger of giving up the victory. Salah had clearly recovered from his disagreement with manager Klopp at London Stadium as he led the charge by scoring the first goal and having an involvement in Robertson's second. It was Elliott, however, who was the star of Liverpool's show and as well as setting up the third for Gakpo he got the deserved reward of a goal of his own with a searing drive high past Vicario. Elsewhere, it was almost a dress rehearsal for Klopp's final game after a stellar nine-year reign when Wolves come to Anfield on the last day of the season. The German was serenaded throughout as The Kop went through his farewell songsheet, Klopp responding with trademark fist pumps in front of Liverpool's fans after a nervous finale ended with victory. Klopp was not whipping up the Kop for a final push for the Premier League title - that has gone after this season once held hopes of four trophies - but it certainly sets the scene for an emotional Anfield goodbye in a fortnight. Too little too late from Spurs Tottenham's abject display for the first hour raised the prospect of humiliation at Anfield, and while they salvaged a sliver of pride with a Richarlison-inspired closing 20 minutes this was another day of disappointment for Postecoglou and his players. As on so many occasions this season, Postecoglou's attacking approach left Spurs conceding too many chances and Liverpool followed recent opponents such as Newcastle United, Arsenal and Chelsea in taking full advantage. The underlying tensions and frustrations in the ranks were evident at half-time when it took a strong intervention from keeper Vicario to keep defenders Romero and Royal apart as they clashed walking off. It was when Richarlison, who may find himself surplus to Spurs' requirements in the summer, was introduced that a thoroughly one-sided game was turned on its head, the striker revelling in Anfield's insults for his Everton connections and causing constant problems. Spurs may have thought the most unlikely of comebacks was on for a few minutes after they scored twice but in reality they did not deserve anything from this game after the way Liverpool had dominated them and their Champions League hopes look very grim now. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68914707

Look the part. If you know that you look like a confident, capable person, eventually you'll start to feel like a winner, too. You should dress how you feel best — not what you think confident is. Try these tricks: Devote a little time each day to personal hygiene and making sure you're presenting yourself well. Shower daily, brush and floss your teeth, and groom your skin and hair. Dress for confidence. You don't have to buy a whole new wardrobe to feel better in your clothes. As long as you're clean, comfortable, and feel good, you're set up for confidence! Remember, you look more confident when you are enjoying what you wear! Be careful not to base your confidence on your outside appearance. Practice wearing clothes that make you feel unconfident for a whole day and try feeling confidence without basing it on appearance. After all, you wouldn't wear a three-piece suit on a pizza delivery. If you think you look good, odds are you probably do. Perfect your posture. How you carry yourself communicates a lot to other people, so make sure you're telling them that you're confident and in-charge. Keep your shoulders back, your spine straight, and your chin high. Walk with purpose instead of dragging your feet, and sit up straight. When you look like a confident person on the outside, you'll be approached as one by the world around you. You won't only fool everyone else -- you'll fool yourself too. Recent research shows that the positioning of your body cues your mind to feel a certain way -- so positioning yourself confidently will make you genuinely feel in charge. And to top it off, having confident body language has been linked to lower levels of stress, too. [1] Smile. Keep your grin in easy reach -- you'd be surprised how even the smallest of smiles can disarm many a social situation and make everyone feel more comfortable. In fact, research shows that smiling reduces stress hormones in the brain. Can you imagine approaching someone who's scowling? No, thank you. If you're worried your smile is fake, keep it small. A fake smile can be spotted from a mile away. On the other hand, if you're genuinely happy to see them -- or just happy for the chance to practice your new confidence skills -- flash those pearly white teeth. https://www.wikihow.com/Be-Confident

Sadiq Khan has won a third term as London’s mayor, capping a round of local elections across England that confirmed the political supremacy of the Labour Party and spelt misery for Britain’s Conservative government. Khan won 43.7% of the vote, beating Conservative challenger Susan Hall by about 11 percentage points to extend his control of the capital that began in 2016. It follows a string of victories around England for Labour, who are firmly positioned to take power from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Conservatives in a general election in the coming months. The Conservatives lost control of 10 local councils and nearly 500 councilors on Thursday, suffering an electoral drubbing at the hands of the public that virtually everyone – including those within the party – had expected. Labour leader Keir Starmer told reporters on Saturday: “I am sorry, I don’t care which political party you support, if you leave your country in a worse state than when you found it 14 years later, you do not deserve to be in Government for a moment longer.” But Sunak likely found enough slender scraps of success to withstand a challenge to his leadership, which rebellious Tories had threatened depending on the outcome of Thursday’s elections. The party was hoping to keep hold of the mayoral position in the West Midlands on Saturday, after previously holding the same position in the Tees Valley, giving the increasingly beleaguered Sunak something to seize onto as he looks to at least unify his lawmakers in Westminster. Thursday’s polls marked a final dry run before the general election, which must take place by January. Sunak has resisted calls to outline when he will hold that vote, and Labour leads opinion polls by a huge margin. Starmer’s opposition party won control of eight councils, and also stormed to victory on Thursday in a Westminster by-election in Blackpool. The results confirmed the conventional polling narrative that the group is on track to win power, though Labour could not quite pull off the barnstorming red wave that some in the party had hoped for, falling short in some of the trickiest contests it faced. And there were indications too that discontent among the party’s position on Israel’s war in Gaza hurt Labour among voters in areas with large Muslim po[CENSORED]tions. In particular the loss of Oldham council, a north-west English town, where around a quarter of the po[CENSORED]tion is Muslim. “We do recognise the strength of feeling that there is and of course we will continue to work just as we do in every area across the country to earn votes back in future,” Labour’s shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, told the BBC. If his victory is confirmed, Khan would become the first mayor of London to serve a third term since the post was created in 2000. The city, home to nine million people, is more multicultural, liberal and pro-European than the UK as a whole, leading Khan to occasionally clash with successive Labour leaders, especially over the issue of Brexit. He has prioritised emissions-cutting policies in an effort to shed the city’s reputation as a major polluter, and made international headlines during a long-running public spat with former US President Donald Trump during his administration. But critics have attacked Khan’s record on knife crime and his recent expansion of a world-first low-emissions zone, which the Conservatives said would hit poorer families in outer London the hardest. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/04/uk/sadiq-khan-london-mayor-election-gbr-intl/index.html

No matter what type of site you want to make, your website should represent you or your business in the best light possible. This is often easier said than done; it’s not uncommon to get burn out when building a website from scratch or using a website builder. How to make a website from scratch Decide what type of website you want to make Choose your website builder Pick your template Customize your template to your brand Build your site structure Add your pages Fill your pages with engaging content Find and purchase a domain name Review and publish Promote your website Establish healthy site maintenance habits 01. Decide what type of website you want to make Any website you create begins with a clear website goal and target audience. By identifying your niche and purpose, you can take steps towards building a site that not only looks pretty but performs as you hope it will. Everything from your site layout to content should ladder up to your intended impact. For example, a portfolio website will naturally look different from an online store. A portfolio will include pages showcasing your work and a prominent “Contact Me” form—whereas an online store will have product pages, payment pages and maybe even print-on-demand integrations that are intended to monetize your website. Depending on your goals, there are different types of websites that you may want to consider creating and various elements worth adding to your site: Blog eCommerce Photo gallery Social media links Online store Chat feature Members area Privacy Policy Event website (including a wedding website) Nonprofit website Note that one site may serve multiple purposes—in which case, you'll want to be very clear about the primary goal of your site. For example, Cleverchefs' catering company uses its site to share its brand story. While the site serves to attract new bookings, its main focus is to educate existing prospects on what sets Cleverchefs apart. Since their website represents the ethos of their company so well, it has become an incredibly helpful tool in closing clients who share similar values and appreciate what they do. Expert tip from business owner Nick Collins, founder of Cleverchefs When I ask my clients why they chose us over our competitors, they usually say it's because of our website. I think they can really feel our passion through the way we connect with them and stand out as a creative catering company. how to build a cosmetics website from scratch 02. Choose your website builder A website builder is a po[CENSORED]r and affordable solution that enables you to setup, design, personalize, publish and manage a website without having to use code. The best platforms help you get a site setup and launched quicker and without fuss—while also offering 24/7 support and built-in features that make scaling easier. Expert tip from Esin D. Habif, product marketing lead (outbound) at Wix.com What often gets forgotten when talking about choosing a website builder is the capabilities of the infrastructure that’s promised to you—the reliability of the hosting, the level of security that’s in order to protect your visitor’s data, and of course your site's speed. Even if infrastructure is not the first thought that comes to mind when it comes to making a website, if it’s not robust enough, it can cause large headaches for website owners when trying to scale a website later on. With the right website builder, you won’t have to deal with the mountains of minutia that other DIY site owners may face (e.g., installing security features by hand, fixing bugs on your own, etc.). Low-code-no-code software takes care of web development for you, so you don't need to know how to code to customize your site. Modern-day website builders will also include AI-powered capabilities, allowing you to work faster and smarter than ever. That said, while there are several solid players in this website-building industry, you’ll want to make sure that you do your due diligence before investing in one. Making the wrong choice could leave you with serious regrets down the road. Sign up for Wix today. Here are some key factors to consider so that you end up with a website builder you love: Customizability: A good website builder should offer the customization you need to start and design your website according to your unique brand and vision. For example, do you envision creating a static website or a dynamic one? Look for builders that offer a range of layout options, as well as the flexibility to tweak the design and functionality to your liking. Wix, for instance, offers hundreds of designer-made templates in addition to AI-powered site creation that can be easily modified for your brand. Furthermore, its WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor lets you preview your changes in real time as you go. Back-office tools/business capabilities: Beyond just website design, when it comes to starting a website, a website builder should provide the back-office tools that you need. This might include features like eCommerce functionality if you need to create your own eCommerce website, inventory management, appointment scheduling and customer relationship management (CRM) tools. Create your list of must-haves and the tasks that need automating as you evaluate your options. AI capabilities: AI is all the rage these days—and for good reason. When you’ve got a full-time job or business to run, AI tools can simplify the process of creating and maintaining your website. For example, Wix’s AI site builder can help you produce a fully functional website in minutes. It makes sophisticated decisions on your behalf regarding your web design, site copy and user experience, while setting you up with the right business apps; you can always edit your site as desired, but can save yourself hours of setup time.” Third-party integrations: Chances are, you already have a favorite platform for emails, advertising or other functions—or perhaps you’re a retailer who wants to expand to new sales channels like Amazon. Seek website builders that integrate with your favorite tools and channels, or that offer sufficient alternatives. Explore your options in marketplaces like Wix’s App Market. (Note that you can also use Wix Headless to access Wix tools from any application.) Security: Website security is paramount to protect your site and user data. A reliable website builder should offer security features like SSL certificates, regular backups and security monitoring to safeguard against cyber threats and data breaches. Speed: Website loading speed significantly impacts user experience and SEO rankings. Choose a website builder known for fast-loading websites. Look for built-in capabilities like content delivery networks (CDNs), which speed up content delivery; streamlined code; and image compression. Reliability: A reliable website builder should provide consistent uptime and minimal downtime. Read reviews and check the builder's uptime statistics to give yourself peace of mind knowing that your website will be accessible to visitors around the clock. Hosting: Many website builders offer web hosting services as part of their packages. Evaluate the hosting infrastructure, including server locations, scalability and performance, to ensure that it aligns with your website's needs. Support: Most of us don’t realize how important support is until it’s dire. As you evaluate your options, you’ll want to check that customer care is accessible in your time zone and that you can resolve issues before they snowball. Look for website builders that offer various support channels, including a knowledge base and self-help resources. For example, Wix has a 24/7 support team as well as a robust library of how-to articles, YouTube videos and communities to help you find whatever answers you’re looking for. Expert tip from Esin D. Habif, product marketing lead (outbound) at Wix.com As a creator or entrepreneur, you're often wearing multiple hats. You're designing the website, you're optimizing for SEO. This means you need a website builder that makes it easy and very learnable for you to do all of those things, on the same platform and still deliver as if working with experts in those fields. 03. Pick your template The visual layout of your website is its most important element. You’ll want to take your time exploring your options before settling on the visual imagery and design. To get started, take a look at this database of professional website templates to see which one fits your vision best. Whether you’re looking for portfolio templates, model portfolio examples or templates for an online store, there are dozens of customizable options to choose from. These range from simple website templates to more complex ones. As you plan out your site, note what your competitor sites look like and check out other visual platforms, like Pinterest and Instagram. All of these examples will provide insight into what fonts, colors and web design styles and trends your audience gravitates towards. However, avoid copying what’s already been done. Rather, gain an understanding of the visual language you want to pursue and check that it resonates with your intended audience. Expert tip from Anna Suntsov, blog and social team lead at Wix.com The most important thing before building a website is good research. Know what you want to do and collect strong inspirations that will contribute to your design. Alternatively, build your website with AI If the process of choosing and customizing a template feels daunting, or you simply don’t have the time, Wix’s AI website builder can simplify your work even further. Customize your template to your brand Your website is the face of your personal or business brand and is often the first touchpoint that people have with you, so you’ll want to make sure that it's uniquely yours. Before you get lost in the details, establish clear branding guidelines to keep your anchored. These guidelines should shape your site design—as well as the nitty-gritty details like the tone of your microcopy, your logo placement and the color of your buttons. A great way to get started is by creating a simple idea map with a pen and paper. In the center of your map, write down the type of site you plan to make. Think about the words and phrases that describe the vibe you’re going for. Write each phrase in separate circles stemming from your initial idea. Once you’ve broken down your brand into individual components, it will be much easier to tackle larger tasks. Reflect on this map as you design your first logo or ruminate on the right types of imagery to include on your site. Remember, a well-designed website is visually appealing, easy to navigate and aligned with your brand identity. Taking the time to get this right can pay dividends in the long run. From a more tactical perspective, here are several steps you’ll want to take when personalizing your site. Craft a website color theme The use of color is not only for making your site look nice. Your color palette should align with your brand identity. Color psychology is important to take into consideration, as colors have the power to affect and evoke specific emotions and behaviors. For example, blue has become a common color used in branding corporations and businesses, particularly in the tech field—most likely because blue is associated with stability and reliability. However, blue can also reflect sadness, hence the term “feeling blue.” Orange, for example, is generally paired with feelings of freshness and vitality. Keep in mind that the feeling correlated with a color also depends on the shade and what other colors it’s paired with. These are both important points to consider when choosing your website color scheme. create a website from scratch sample To get started, consider your website goals. Think about the vibe you want to create and the emotions you want to convey, especially if you’re starting a business. The more aligned your web design is with your overall branding, the more people are going to connect with your company and your website. And the stronger the personal connection, the more time they’ll spend on your site. This will have enormous effects on conversion rates and overall interest and engagement with your brand. Keep in mind, choosing your color theme doesn’t mean you’re stuck with that palette forever, so try out different options and see what speaks to you. With Wix, for example, you can adjust your site’s colors at any point by clicking on the Site Design icon on the left side of your editing screen. From there, you can choose your base colors, accent colors, text colors and more. color theme picker in wix Pick the right web fonts Just like colors, typography can also play a key role in evoking feelings. When choosing the best fonts for your website, there are a number of things to consider. First, like all other elements on your site, your font choice should match your branding. Browse different typefaces to find one that reflects your unique personality, whether you’re youthful and contemporary or have a more traditional approach. The three primary types of fonts include: Serif: Fonts with a small line attached to the ends of each letter. Sans serif: More standard, block-like typography without small lines at the ends of each character. Script: Has a more elegant feel, with each letter connecting fluidly from one to the next. You can also check out our article on the best fonts for websites for more details on how to choose the best one for your site. Whatever you go for, make sure that your font is readable on both desktop and mobile devices. Remember to keep in mind Google safe fonts. Pro tip: When it comes to fonts, remember to stay consistent throughout your website. On Wix, you can easily accomplish this by going to the Site Design icon on your side panel and managing text through the Text Theme tab. That way, your content will appear uniformly across the site. customize text theme in wix Add other branding elements When it comes to creating a professional site that wows, the magic is often in the details. As you look to strengthen the branding on your site, don’t overlook these elements: Logo: Place your logo prominently in your header and as needed across your site. Wix's logo maker simplifies the logo design process, allowing you to create a logo that represents your brand and perfectly matches the aesthetic of your site. Favicon: A favicon is a small icon that appears in the browser tab to the left of your URL when someone visits your site. Adding a favicon to your Wix website is a simple process that adds another layer of professionalism to your user experience. Just go to your site editor, click on “Settings” in the top left of your screen and scroll down to “Favicon.” Here, you can upload, adjust and save your favicon image. Then, just publish your site and behold—your brand new favicon. screen for adding custom favicon in Wix More tips: Learn the ins and outs of building a website using the Wix Editor with this online course. 05. Build your site structure A pretty site means nothing if it’s clunky and difficult to navigate. Before releasing your site to the world, check that your site makes it easy for visitors to find the exact pages that they’re looking for. There are several main components to bear in mind, as listed below. Create your sitemap Your sitemap is the blueprint of your site’s architecture. It includes all the pages and content you plan to create, so web crawlers like Google can better find and understand your pages. A sitemap typically needs updating whenever you add pages or move pages around, but systems like Wix automatically create and update your sitemap for you. Optimize your navigation menu Your navigation menu guides your human visitors to the right pages on your site. It’s usually displayed as a horizontal or vertical bar on your site with links to several different pages. As a general rule of thumb, your site should be organized in a way that enables a visitor to move from one page to another in three clicks or less. But your main menu does not—and should not have to—include all of your site pages. Link to the most important or po[CENSORED]r pages from here, and provide an easy way for visitors to get back to where they started. (One of the best ways of achieving this is by adding a clickable logo at the top of your page that leads visitors back to the homepage.) Check how your favorite sites design their navigation menus for inspiration. You may, for instance, want to include a mega menu that’s more visual in nature and allows users to hover over a main menu category to see subcategories of links. Alternatively, if you’re creating a simple website with fewer pages, you can have a simple anchor menu at the top of your page that links to specific pages or specific sections on a page. You’ll also want to spend time optimizing a mobile version of your menu to make sure everything translates clearly to phones and tablets. To set up a menu in the Wix editor, just head to your side panel on the left side of the editor and click on “+” at the top of the panel to add an element. Then, select "Menu & Anchor" from the drop-down and choose your desired style. Menus and anchors option in Wix Expert tip from Adi Huri, product manager at WOW for Wix.com Keep in mind that the menu is the map of your website. By adding the right pages to your menu, in the right order, it can be the heart of your website’s success. Don’t ignore your footer While your navigation menu is the primary navigation tool visitors will use to traverse your site, you can use your footer strategically to provide additional links and information. Your footer offers prime real estate to reinforce important content or show other areas of your site that your main menu doesn’t cover (think: contact information and direct links to your social media profiles). In the Wix editor, you can easily drag and drop widgets and other elements directly into the footer. You can also easily adjust its size by dragging the border up or down. 06. Add your pages Once you’ve mapped out what pages you want on your site, it’s time to create them. Here’s a quick step-by-step of how to do it in the Wix editor. Open Page Manager: Click the "Pages & Menu" icon in the left side panel to access the Page Manager. Add page: Click the blue "+ Add Page" button to create a new page and click on whatever template suits your needs. Name your page: Once the page is added to your site, the page name will be highlighted in the left side panel for you to edit. Customize: Customize the newly created page by adding your content, adjusting the layout and refining the design. Manage pages: Drag and drop pages in the side panel to rearrange them or click on the ellipsis icon to the right of each page title to duplicate, delete, rename, hide and more. Subpages: Create dropdown menus by adding subpages to your main pages, enhancing site navigation. Save and publish: Save your work regularly and, when ready, hit the "Publish" button to make your changes live on your website. option to add page in wix When designing web pages for your professional website, consider adding these pages: An inviting homepage. This is the face of your website, which means that you have to make it beautiful, yet informational. You should strive to present all the crucial elements right from the get-go. This way, clients will instantly understand who you are and what you do. A shop or gallery. This is the center of your site where visitors can browse through your products or services. Create product listings, manage inventory and process transactions all from one centralized dashboard. Dedicate time to write product descriptions that will grab potential customers’ attention. The same goes for your product photography to ensure that your items are displayed in their very best light. A personable About page. Use this page as your online business card. It’s the spot where you can present who you are, what you stand for, your strengths, values and any other crucial information you think your visitors should know about your team and your business. An easy-to-find contact section. Don’t leave your site visitors astray by making them search for your contact information. Dedicate a page to list contact numbers, email, social links and any other way users can get in touch with you. In addition, it’s a good practice to add your essential contact details on your website footer. An engaging blog. By starting a blog, you’ll be able to continuously add regular and fresh content to your website. You’ll have the chance to establish yourself as an expert in your field while giving your SEO efforts a well-deserved boost. Give our blog maker a go, when you're ready to start. po[CENSORED]r types of web pages Expert tip from Allison Lee, editor-in-chief at Wix.com Blogs don’t get enough credit for their long-term advantages. In the long run, a blog can serve as a huge traffic driver and a way to connect with future customers (case in point: our Wix Blog is the first touchpoint for millions of people who may have never stumbled onto our site otherwise). That said, a blog is a long-term commitment—it requires a well thought-out strategy and consistent maintenance. An interactive membership area. Creating a membership area on your website serves the dual purpose of monetization and user engagement. Various membership models, like drip-feed, all-in and fixed-term, can be employed to monetize your content. You can also offer premium content, online services or downloadable materials as incentives for users to subscribe. Easy-to-access online courses. The growing po[CENSORED]rity of virtual classes presents an opportunity to generate income by launching a paid online course. This approach allows you to monetize your existing website traffic. Design courses that align with your expertise and cater to your audience's needs. Ensure the content is relevant and unique. An informative FAQ page. Save yourself and your clients some time (and frustration) by including an FAQ page to provide answers to questions that may naturally come up as visitors browse your site. An online booking system. Allow customers to schedule and pay for appointments or classes directly from your site. This way, you can spend less time playing phone tag and more time growing your empire. A testimonials page. This provides you with the perfect place in which previous, satisfied customers can sing your praises. Nothing is more impressive to a potential client or buyer than positive, unbiased reviews. 07. Fill your pages with engaging content As people interact with your website, you'll want to make sure you're grabbing their attention and keeping it. The best way to do this is by optimizing and diversifying how you relay information. Start by thinking about the various types of content you can host on your website. There's text, photography, videos, animation and so much more. Once you have a grasp on all of your options, it’s time to decide how to organize it. Consider your content hierarchy For your visitors to feel comfortable and at home while browsing, it’s important to keep your site as organized as possible. Think about hierarchy here: you’ll want your most eye-catching and important content to be placed above the fold (in other words, the area that’s visible on your website without visitors having to scroll). Expert top tip from Amanda Weiner, CRO expert at Wix.com Site hierarchy and the information you provide your visitors with is more than just how your site looks. This will also directly impact how many visitors ultimately buy your products. You’ll want to be clear about your offerings through your content, your visuals and your buttons right from the get go to ensure visitors recognize your value right away. Furthermore, take note that some of your readers are only skimming your content. To make their lives easier and to make your content stand out, consider how you can optimize your design so your audience can get the most out of your content. To do so, consider which written information can be made more digestible and visual with the use of media features (videos, images and animations, infographics for example). Make certain headers and other important bits of information stand out more than others by opting for a larger font or a bright color that contrasts with the background. Consider SEO Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the practice of optimizing your site so your pages can rank higher on search engine result pages. When launching a new website from scratch, it’s vital to set your site up for success so it can be found by Google. The more exposure you get, the more likely it is for prospective clients to find your site and book your services, buy your products or read your blog. Expert tip from Mordy Oberstein, head of SEO branding at Wix.com Leveraging SEO and integrating it into the website creation process is vital. Various studies have shown that organic search is the single greatest provider of traffic to websites - with that being even more pronounced within the B2B context. To that, traffic from organic search, when done correctly is essentially built to last (with proper maintenance over time, of course) and forms a crucial part of a site’s long-term growth. Enhancing your website's visibility on search engines like Google is essential for driving organic traffic to your pages. Fortunately, every Wix site starts out with a solid infrastructure that already exceeds the needs of search engines, giving you a strong SEO foundation in organic search. From there, Wix SEO tools make it easy for you to optimize your reach even further. Capabilities include: SEO Assistant: Every Wix site comes with an SEO Assistant. Just put in your focus keywords for the page you’re working on, and your SEO Assistant will tell you if there’s anything you can do to further optimize it. Wix seo assistant Keyword research: Wix provides keyword research tools to help you discover relevant keywords for your content. On-page SEO: Easily optimize your meta titles, descriptions and headers to improve your on-page SEO. Image SEO: Optimize your images with alt tags and compress them to improve page loading times. AI meta tag creation: Use AI to generate optimized title tags and meta descriptions for each of your pages. Sitemap generation: Wix generates XML sitemaps to help search engines crawl and index your site effectively. Mobile optimization: Ensure your website is mobile-friendly for better search rankings. Local SEO: If you have a local business, use Wix's local SEO tools to improve your visibility in local searches. SEO analytics: Monitor your website's SEO performance with built-in analytics and reports. Rich results: Implement rich snippets and schema markup to make your search results stand out. Backlink tracking: Keep an eye on your backlink profile to improve your site's authority. You’ll also have the ability to utilize additional SEO tools like Ahrefs and Semrush. Consider the mobile experience As you build your site, keep in mind that a significant amount of consumers will be visiting your site from their smartphones. In fact, as of April 2021, over 50% of internet use comes from cell phones and tablets. It’s because of this that Google established mobile-first indexing, a system in which the search engine predominantly determines website ranking based on mobile websites, not desktop. As mobile web surfing becomes even more entrenched in our culture, it’s essential to invest time in mobile features as well as design to provide a smooth, intuitive user experience for those smaller screens. Whatever website creation platform you choose, make sure it has a mobile editor and the ability to adjust elements for mobile without it affecting the desktop version. You’ll also want a website builder that prioritizes performance and site speed. For example, Wix deploys performance-friendly website infrastructure, such as cache and lazy loading, to ensure faster sites. Once you're done with your site and happy with it, you may want to consider making your website an app as well. Learn more: How to make a website mobile-friendly example of a mobile site 08. Find and purchase a domain name Now comes one of the most exciting parts of making a website—choosing a domain name. Your domain is like your website’s address and permanent home on the web. When an internet user enters your domain name, or website URL into a web browser, it connects with a web server who identifies your domain by its IP address and then delivers your site to the user. This process is also referred to as a Domain Name System. Choosing a domain name doesn’t need to be too complex. While your name needs to be memorable and unique, domains (top-level domains) and subdomains typically include the name of your website and/or the name of your business followed by an extension like .com or .org. If you are struggling to come up with the perfect name for your business, try a website name generator to help get the ball rolling. All domain names must be registered with a domain name registrar or registry, where the owners of any domain name can be searched and found. You'll also need to consider what domain extension you want to use: .de domain .xyz domain .co domain .ch domain .be domain .store domain .info domain .tv domain .company domain .digital domain .ca domain .fr domain Website creators like Wix offer free domain names with a premium website building plan. This is advantageous because it will improve your website’s credibility to both people and search engines. It will show visitors that you’re a professional, trusted brand and allows people to find you more easily online. After choosing a domain name, you'll next need to consider your web hosting service options. From shared hosting to cloud hosting, there are several different hosted services to choose from. Wix sites all come with reliable and secure hosting for high uptime on all user sites. Learn more: Website name ideas 09. Review and publish Building a website from scratch can be an exciting journey, but rushing through the process is a common pitfall. In an eagerness to go live, many often overlook critical elements, potentially harming their website's performance and user experience. Avoid this situation. Make sure to dot your Is and cross your Ts before publishing. Here are some key tips to help you out: Resist the urge to skimp on planning. Outlining how to plan a website is the foundation of a successful website strategy. Take the time to clearly define your website's purpose, target audience and content strategy. Mapping out your site structure and creating a content calendar will help you stay organized. Rushing into design and content creation without a plan can lead to a disjointed website that confuses visitors. Take advantage of features like Wix’s “Site Preview” mode, which allows you to view and navigate your site as a user. This enables you to experience the user journey of navigating your site and flag issues a user might encounter. Make sure to test all pages, links and embedded media in addition to spell-checking content. Do this on desktop and mobile view. Get a fresh pair of eyes to review your work. Ask a friend or colleague to take a look at your website and give you notes on initial impressions, user experience, clarity of content and effectiveness of the design. This step is imperative as someone less familiar with your content will be a much better barometer for how a new visitor would navigate your website. Don’t forget about SEO. Rushing through SEO or ignoring it altogether can hinder your website's discoverability. Research relevant keywords for your niche, optimize meta titles and descriptions and regularly create fresh, valuable content. Ignoring SEO or rushing through it can result in your site not ranking well on search engine results pages, which can significantly hamper its visibility and, consequently, its success. build a website from scratch (home decor example) 10. Promote your website Once your website is live, you need to let people know about it. You can promote your website through social media, email marketing, guest blogging or outreach marketing. Effective promotion ensures that your website reaches the right people and delivers the desired outcomes—whether you’re aiming to increase traffic, engagement or sales. Expert tip from Lilach Goldis, social media marketing manager at Wix.com Identify the social media platforms your audience is active on the most and get an in-depth understanding of what it takes to rank in them. For example, converting your Instagram carousel posts into a Reel can capture attention more effectively and boost your content's impact, ultimately leading people to visit your site. Here are some ways Wix can help you get your site out there: SEO: In case we haven’t said it enough, SEO is imperative. For those less familiar with SEO, SEO is basically the practice of optimizing your site to help it rank better on Google and other search engines, which, in turn, bring you more web traffic. This is a crucial step in ensuring your site's success once it’s published. Although SEO is very technical and nuanced, using the right website builder can streamline the entire process. You can get an automatically optimized site with a solid infrastructure that exceeds search engine standards, alongside a suite of SEO tools. For example, Wix’s SEO Assistant gives you a personalized SEO setup plan for your site. It can make suggestions on how to tweak your content and provide explanations as to how these changes may help your rankings. For the more advanced user, Wix offers other SEO tools including a robots.txt editor, dynamic XML sitemaps and customizable canonical tags (among others). Keep in mind, however, that it takes time (and regular investment) to see the results of SEO, and your site may not rank well immediately. Email marketing: Whether you're an eCommerce business, a blogger or an entrepreneur, it’s essential to build and maintain strong customer relationships. Email marketing tools enable you to create and send professional email campaigns to your subscribers and drive traffic to your site. Send newsletters, promote new products, create trigger emails and share exciting updates with your audience. Blogs: Blogging is a powerful content marketing strategy. With SEO-rich blogging capabilities, you can create and publish engaging blog posts that not only captivate your audience but also rank well in search engine results. When selecting your website builder, look for built-in SEO features to ensure your blogs are optimized for maximum visibility. Advertising: Unlike SEO which takes time to yield results, ads can help drive immediate attention to your site. It’s worth experimenting with Google Ads, Facebook Ads and others—but avoid spreading yourself too thin. Use the tools at your disposal in your website builder, and test different targeting and campaign types. For example, you could use Instagram ads to retarget website visitors, in addition to Google search ads to engage new visitors who are searching for sites like yours. 11. Establish healthy site maintenance habits Much like a work of art, a website is never truly "finished." It's an ever-evolving entity that demands regular attention to maintain peak performance. One of the primary advantages of using a website builder to create your site is that you can easily make additions and changes as needed in real time. By following these best practices, you can maintain a site that not only survives—but thrives—in the competitive digital landscape. Keep your website updated. Your website can quickly become outdated over time, from its design to your keyword targeting and overall SEO strategy. Often, website designers find that they need to provide easier navigation with better bounce rates and other important site metrics. This is particularly important if you have found that sales on your online store are decreasing. Update your website as part of your website management strategy by adding new content regularly and making sure that your existing content is up-to-date. Monitor your website traffic. Every published Wix website has Wix Analytics included in the Dashboard, which gives you actionable information about your website. Learn which content is working best and how your visitors behave, then use these insights to act. This information can help you improve your website and make it more user-friendly. Secure your website. It's important to keep your website secure from hackers and malware. You can do this by installing security software and by keeping your website's software up to date. It's also crucial to use a platform that thoroughly incorporates website security such as Wix, which provides a safe foundation for your website and gathers real-time insights to detect any threats. Back up your website. It's always a good idea to back up your website regularly. This way, if something happens to your website, you can restore it from a backup. Wix has a feature called Site History, which automatically creates site revisions every time you save or publish. This means that you can go back to a previous version of your site any time you want. You can also duplicate your site at any time to create a manual backup in your Wix account. Be aware that the duplicated site is not automatically updated when you update your original site. how to make a website How to make a website with AI Making or designing a website with AI involves using artificial intelligence tools and services to enhance different aspects of your site, such as design, content creation or user interaction. Are you a coding enthusiast or a professional developer planning to upgrade your system? Discover the optimal RAM requirements for coding to ensure optimal performance and smooth work processes in this detailed guide. When it comes to coding, it is crucial to have sufficient Random Access Memory (RAM) to handle the workload efficiently. RAM plays a significant role in the execution of your code and impacts your productivity and overall work experience. The minimum RAM requirement for coding largely depends on the programming language and the complexity of your projects. However, as a general guideline, 8GB of RAM is considered suitable for most traditional coding tasks. It allows you to work on projects without experiencing significant lags or performance issues. If you work extensively with complex software or frameworks, such as machine learning or data analysis, then consider upgrading to 16GB or even 32GB of RAM. These higher configurations ensure smoother performance and faster execution of resource-intensive tasks. Furthermore, if you are involved in web development or other memory-intensive projects, having ample RAM enables you to run virtual machines or containers without degrading your system’s performance. It’s important to note that while RAM is vital for coding, it is not the sole factor determining your system’s overall performance. Other components, such as the processor and storage, play significant roles as well. Therefore, ensure your system is equipped with a suitable RAM configuration that complements the other hardware components. In conclusion, the optimal RAM requirement for coding depends on the complexity of your projects. Starting with a minimum of 8GB of RAM is recommended. This soulslike throws out dark themes and gratuitous violence in favor of talking cartoon crabs. It’s wonderfully ironic that the biggest breath of fresh air the soulslike genre has received in years comes from an adventure that takes place entirely underwater. Where most dodge-rolling action games are drab, bloody, and edgelordian, Another Crab’s Treasure is bursting with bright colors, cartoonish sea creatures, and silly humor. That extreme departure from serious and spooky vibes makes it standout in an increasingly crowded space, even when it follows the formula extremely closely in every other regard. It suffers from overly simplistic combat, a general lack of challenge, and some bugs and camera wonkiness now and again – but with memorable characters, an extremely enjoyable story, and lots of original ideas, Another Crab’s Treasure had me grinning all throughout my 20-hour tour of the ocean floor. As a cuddly crustacean with a license to krill, Another Crab’s Treasure has you using a discarded dinner fork to turn all manner of sea life into sashimi. Aside from its unique oceanic setting and comedic approach, you’ll probably recognize a lot of what’s here: you’ve got “bonfires'' to rest at called Moon Snail Shells, harsh consequences for dying, chunky bosses who can kill you in short order, and, of course, those sweet, sweet perfect parrying mechanics for people who want to be a sweaty little hermit crab. But there’s also a ton of attention paid to less conventional areas, including some light platforming and puzzle solving – like one section where you’re jumping around a skyscraper of sea litter and socketing fuses to power heavy machinery needed to open the way – and those wrinkles go a long way toward differentiating it. The cheery vibe is present throughout its charming story, which has far more meat on its bones than you might expect. You play as a meek and conflict-averse hermit crab named Kril, and after your shell is unjustly taken from you, you embark on an action-packed quest to get it back. Along the way you befriend a gang of loveable arthropods, like Konche, the wise old hermit crab who serves as your mentor, or Firth, the douchey social darwinist with an ego as powerful as the tides. The story expertly manages to stay light and humorous for the most part, even as it occasionally dips into murkier waters, like Kril’s battle with depression. It does flounder a bit in the final act with an ending that’s quite unsatisfying (though maybe there’s some secret alternate ending I missed where things are less of a bummer), but I still overwhelmingly enjoyed the story Another Crab’s Treasure tells. https://www.ign.com/articles/another-crabs-treasure-review

Wander the downtown area of any major city around the world and you might find people walking around with a laser-sharp focus on their smartphones. Normally, you'd think they were following directions or having an intense Snapchat session, but these days they might just be playing Pokemon Go. This is the mobile game that took the world by storm in late 2016, and with good reason: It's the closest we've gotten to capturing and training actual, real-life Pokemon. Pokemon Go is still tremendously fun and, despite a few issues, it's one of the most addictive iPhone games I've ever played. (It's also available on Android.) The recent of addition of raid battles breathes new life into the game in the form of challenging new combat for higher level players. The gameplay and implementation of augmented reality (AR) isn't brilliant or groundbreaking in and of itself. It's the same framework used by Ingress, an earlier AR game from Pokemon Go creator Niantic Labs. What sets Pokemon Go apart is the sheer scale and scope of its cross-generational appeal. The game may drain your phone battery and tracking may still not be ideal, but Pokemon Go still manages to balance the difficult task of being fun for newcomers and capturing the sense of nostalgia for the old hands. To Catch Them Is My Real Test, To Train Them Is My Cause My first step in achieving my lifelong dream of becoming a Pokemon Master was to download Pokemon Go onto my Apple iPhone 6s Plus. It also works with Android smartphones with 2GB of RAM and Android 4.4 KitKat or higher, letting you use a variety of budget phones. I initially connected it to my Google account, which is no longer seems an option due to security issues that cropped up. You now have to use a Pokemon Trainer Club account, which uses The Pokemon Company's server. After making an account I quickly swiped through the introduction by Professor Willow and created a character using the handful of customization options for gender, hair, skin color, and clothing. You're still able to make changes to these anytime you want later on. That done, the game placed my character on a map of my real-world neighborhood, where I encountered three traditional starter Pokemon: Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur. Your choice of starter doesn't really matter, as you can eventually get all three. I discovered Bulbasaur in my toilet after choosing Charmander, and there's even a way to get Pikachu if you run away from your initial starters.Starter Capturing Pokemon Capturing a Pokemon is a simple task. The Pokemon appear on the map when you're close to them, which is usually indicated by rustling grass or lure modules (more on these later). You simply approach the target and tap it to attempt a capture. This launches your smartphone's camera, which shows the Pokemon in AR, set against the backdrop of your surroundings. At this point, a set of rings appears around the Pokemon, indicating the difficulty of capturing it. Green-ringed Pokemon are easy to capture, yellow are moderate, and red are difficult. From here, you have two options: Capture the critter by swiping Pokeballs at it, or run away. If you correctly line up your swipes, you should be able to capture a Pokemon on your first or second try. At higher difficulty, Pokemon can dodge, fight back, flee, and break out of Pokeballs. Subsequent updates have adjusted catch difficulty, making captures harder but also ramping up spawns. If you're lucky and the Pokemon gets caught, you'll get some experience points, allowing you to level up. It also grants you bonuses like stardust and candy, which you'll need to level up and evolve your Pokemon. Staryu in line Overall, capturing Pokemon in AR is a fun and engaging pursuit. There's something undeniably exciting about seeing a Pokemon present in the real world. It worked seamlessly on my iPhone, but owners of more affordable Android devices will want to make sure they have a gyroscope; otherwise they won't be able to play. That said, it's undeniably easier to capture Pokemon when not in AR mode because you don't have to move your phone as much. I Will Travel Across the Land, Searching Far and Wide To play Pokemon Go you must do something few other games require. You must leave your house, step outside, and get some exercise. For the average gamer, this practically counts as a fitness app. There's nothing as formal as a step counter, but you do get bonuses for distance traveled. You can also enable a buddy Pokemon, essentially it's a companion that appears in your profile and gains experience as you walk. This is one place the Pokemon Go Plus ($24.99 at Walmart) wearable comes in handy, because it keeps track of your distance. You need to walk around to find Pokemon, collect items, and hatch eggs. You'll know a Pokemon is nearby from the bottom right of your screen, which gives you an idea of the Pokemon that are in your area, as well as approximately where they are. Spawns The distribution and concentration of Pokemon can vary wildly depending on your area. Niantic has tweaked spawn rates several times, but generally you'll still get more Pokemon in urban areas with parks. Things get more complicated when you consider the fact that certain elemental Pokemon spawn in certain biomes. For instance, along the riverside you might get more water Pokemon, and apparently in parts of the Arizona and New Mexico desert you get more rock and ground Pokemon. In my neighborhood in Jersey City, I only got six or seven Pokemon over an entire weekend. Meanwhile, friends living in Williamsburg, Bed-Stuy, and other parts of New York City reported numbers in the double digits. My best Pokemon hunting ground proved to be Madison Square Park near the PCMag office, which was ripe with spawns. A word about spawns: Their exact mechanics are a bit of an enigma, but from my testing I've confirmed that Pokemon spawn in the same location for everyone and that multiple people can capture the same Pokemon. I was able to capture a Cubone that spawned in the office using two different phones. However, after a certain amount of time the Cubone went away, indicating there's a spawning and despawning mechanic at work behind the scenes, likely tied to a time counter. To identify the Pokemon in a given location, check the bottom right of your map screen for your Nearby counter. You'll see all the Pokemon in your general vicinity, with an image hinting at their location. Pokestop Pokestops There are a few key features you'll want to be mindful of while on a hunt. The first is Pokestops. These are buildings, landmarks, and other objects of interest that grant you bonuses, eggs, and Pokeballs when you pass by them. Pokestops are marked by blue boxes that turn into blue Pokeball symbols when you approach them. The symbols turn purple when you've collected their items. These are important if you want to keep stocked up on Pokeballs. Eggs Eggs are also good to have. If you put them in the Egg Incubator they'll hatch after you walk a certain distance (2 kilometers seems to be the minimum) and they're currently the only way to get Pokemon from Generation 2, like Cleffa, Igglybuff, Pichu, Togepi, Elekid, Magby, and Smoochum. If you use the Pokemon Go Plus wearable, you'll also have a much easier time hatching eggs because it's more likely to register steps when you're walking. Lures If you want to capture lots of Pokemon, your best bet is to find lure modules. They're hard to mistake on the map, as they're essentially pillars of swirling flower petals. You can purchase lure modules from the store using coins (about 99 cents worth each, with bulk discounts), which you'll need to buy with real-world money. Once used, they attract Pokemon to that area for 30 minutes. The nice part is that everyone in the area can take advantage of them, not just the person who set them. The Pokemon don't run out—although they may leave—so multiple people can capture the same Pokemon, while it sticks around. If you're the more solitary sort, you can use incense, another in-app purchase (which starts about 80 cents per stick), which does the same thing as lure modules, except only the incense user can capture the Pokemon that appear. Neither item is a required purchase, but if you're in an area where Pokemon aren't spawning, either might be a good option. Some Pokemon are more common in some areas, while others are rarer. You're likely to encounter a lot of Rattatas, Pidgeys, and Doduos, but fewer Magmars and Polygons, let alone the ever-elusive Ditto. New updates have tweaked spawn rates to increase the number of rarer Pokemon, but you're still likely to encounter the common types more often. That said, there's no harm in capturing the same Pokemon more than once. Doing so gives you some experience, stardust, which you need to increase Pokemon levels, and candy, which you need for evolution. If you're concerned about filling up your bag, you can just transfer duplicates to Professor Willow, the guy who introduces you to the game, and he'll give you candy. But keep in mind that it's not reversible; once you transfer Pokemon to the Professor Willow there's no getting them back. All Gyms The third major landmarks are gyms. These can be found throughout the map, but from what I've seen gyms tend to be concentrated in the downtown areas of cities. There were only one or two in my neighborhood (happily one was my apartment building and the other is right across from it), and some users living in rural or suburban areas have reported having no gyms at all. Gyms are important because they are the sole place you can engage in battles against other trainers and Boss Pokemon, though it's not in real time. Essentially, you are fighting the Pokemon that a gym leader has left behind to hold the fort. In the beginning of the game, you won't have to worry about gyms, but once you reach level 5 you can choose a Team and battle to take control of gyms. Naturally, all of this wandering around searching requires that you keep your phone on, and your GPS. The Pokemon Go Plus wearable or Apple Watch app can help save some juice by notifying you of Pokemon you encounter and hitting Pokestops without needing to take out your phone. But even so, battery drain is significant. For an hour of average gameplay, I lost 30 percent of my battery life. If you're planning on playing Pokemon Go sessions you'd be well advised to carry chargers and spare battery packs with you. Leveling Up Capturing Pokemon isn't enough. If you want to become a true Pokemon Master, you'll need to level them up and have them fight. As I've mentioned before, the primary method of leveling and evolving a Pokemon is by feeding them stardust and candy. There are two numbers you'll want to keep track of: Hit points (HP) and combat power (CP). HP measure how much damage your Pokemon can take in battle before it faints, and CP determines how well your Pokemon will perform in battle. Generally speaking, the Pokemon with the higher CP will win, though weaknesses and strengths also play a role. Anyone who's played a traditional game knows fire is strong against grass and weak against water. You'll want to keep those kinds of strengths and weaknesses in mind. Currently, Pokemon Go lacks direct trainer versus trainer battles, nor does it seem to be a feature that's ever going to be added. That's a fairly big disappointment, but you're not entirely without options for seeing your team in combat. Gym Battles As mentioned, gyms are the place to test your mettle, but first you'll need to pick a team. There are three to choose from. Team Instinct, led by Spark, focuses on trusting your instincts and is represented by Zapdos. Team Mystic, led by Blanche, concentrates on evolution and is represented by Articuno. And Team Valor, led by Candela, specializes in being the very best Pokemon trainer, and is represented by Moltres. Despite the different descriptions and mascots, the teams are pretty much identical, so there's no need to agonize over your choice. However, your neighborhood may favor one team over the others, which makes it beneficial to pick the one that dominates. The gyms in my area are dominated by Team Mystic, so that's what I went with, much to the annoyance of my Team Valor friends.Gym team in line After choosing a team you can jump right into gym battles. Go to a gym led by an opposing team and you can fight them to become a gym leader. On the occasions when I was able to battle and the app didn't freeze, it was a ridiculously fun. You can launch a battle using basic attacks or charged up special attacks. There's an element of strategy that comes from knowing which attack to use, and when. You can also dodge incoming enemy attacks, swap out members of your team, and use items to heal and revive your Pokemon. Battle is one of the better-implemented mechanics of the game, and one I want to see more of outside the gym. If you successfully win a gym battle, you take over the gym on behalf of your team. The benefits of this are manifold. You get bonuses such as experience points for every day you control the gym, and you also get to have one of your captured Pokemon parked on it. Members of the same team can place Pokemon at the location to defend it. Prestige is gained by winning battles and lost by losing them. A gym with higher prestige can be defended by more Pokemon at one time, which makes it harder to capture. It used to be that the longer you held a gym the more powerful the Pokemon you left behind would become, but in order to make the map more dynamic Niantic rolled out an update to make it so the longer you leave a Pokemon at a gym, the more motivation it loses. Motivation is your Pokemon's willingness to fight, which in game terms translates to combat power. A clever low level player can seize a gym from a higher one by waiting till CP drops to zero. At that point, the Pokemon is kicked out of the gym. If you're the high level player and you want to hold onto the gym as long as possible you'll need to feed berries to each Pokemon at the gym to keep their CP up. Additional restrictions make it so that Pokemon with CP over 3,000 lose motivation faster and you can only leave one of each type of Pokemon at a gym (fire, grass, ground, and so on), meaning it's possible for attackers with more diverse lineups to win. These changes aren't likely to make high level players happy, but they will please new players who haven't been able to challenge older players with powerfully leveled up Pokemon. It's not all bad news for higher level players though, because once you reach level 20 you can participate in raid battles. Raid Battles For higher level players, Pokemon Go now offers the opportunity to fight in raid battles, thanks to a recent update. Once you hit level 20, you can access raid events in which a powerful Boss Pokemon appears at certain times of the day. If there's one happening close to you, you get a notification and have the chance to join. One caveat is that you'll need a Raid Pass or Premium Raid Pass in order to join a raid. These can be gotten by going to a gym and spinning the photo disc. Only one raid pass can be used a day, otherwise, you need to purchase a Premium Raid Pass from the shop to participate in raid battles more often. Either way, you turn in your pass in exchange for joining the raid. All raid battles—identified by a floating egg that starts hatching to show when the battle starts—take place at gyms, so you can quickly head straight there and team up with groups of other players (up to a maximum of 20 in a group) to take down the Boss Pokemon. Raid battles range in difficulty from level 1 to level 5. At higher levels you need more group members to take down the Pokemon. That said, if you're a high level trainer yourself, it's possible to go it solo against some of the lower level Bosses. pokemonmOnce the battle begins, it's similar to combat in a gym battle. You can choose 6 Pokemon to fight for you. For the combat itself, you tap the screen for a Fast Attack, which also recharges the charge meter; press and hold for a Charged Attack, which does lots of damage; and swipe left or right to dodge incoming attacks. During the course of the battle, you can flee, heal your Pokemon, and then rejoin the battle. If you lose, you still have the option of rejoining the raid and battling again as long as you do it before the raid ends. If you and your group defeat the Boss, you are rewarded with special items and get Premier Balls which can be used to capture the Boss Pokemon. Raid battles are a fun new mechanic and a nice twist on the typical gym battle, but they present a high barrier to entry for a new player, since you can't jump into them right away. Another problem I encountered was a lack of group members. When trying out a raid in my neighborhood (my apartment building is very conveniently a gym) I was left fighting a Magmar Boss Pokemon by myself. It wiped out my entire team because I had no help or backup in my neighborhood. With fewer people playing Pokemon Go than during the height of its po[CENSORED]rity, this sort of team-based battling can be difficult if you live in an area without other Pokemon Go players nearby. Perhaps this will change as players who have drifted away from the game return to try their hands at raid battles. Either way, there's no doubt gym battles and raids are the most engaging and hands-on aspects of Pokemon Go, due to their competitive nature. They're easy to grasp, and while old hands might grumble about how the battle mechanic isn't ported over straight from previous Pokemon games, remember that this is a free app, and Nintendo probably doesn't want to undercut sales of the actual paid Pokemon games. However, it is unfortunate that trainer versus trainer battles likely won't be included. It's Always Been Our Dream. Pokemon! Pokemon Go has proven to be both a fun experience, and its mixed sense of nostalgia, openness, and social interaction is unmatched in the space. Most of the earlier issues with the servers are gone and bugs have been fixed, making the game much better than when I first tried it. Interest in the game has undeniably diminished from its peak of 20 million active users to the 8 million or so at the time of this writing, but the game is still going strong. New Pokemon have been added, team battles have been added, the buddy feature incorporated, and raid battles have become more accessible to users. With all that in mind, I continue to recommend Pokemon Go, for being a groundbreaking AR mobile game. For true Pokemon fans and people looking for something to get them moving, it's still fun, addictive, and worthwhile. Newbie Pokemon trainers should read Pokemon Go: How to Get Started and Catch 'Em All. If you're a business owner who wants to get in on the phenomenon, you might want to check out Pokemon Go: How the Pokeconomy is Changing Business, One Lure at a Time. Persona 3 Reload isn't just a hi-res tune-up of the 2006 turn-based classic Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3. It's a true remake, with nearly every aspect of the game changing in subtle or major ways. What feels like thousands of added voiceover lines, impressive new persona animations, sharp graphic design and some nifty quality of life features give Persona 3's intricate story a high 2024 shine. Sixteen years ago, Persona 3 was a landmark RPG: The way it combined a high school life sim with a dungeon crawler including both grotesque Pokémon and roguelike elements gave it unparalleled depth. Which also means Persona 3 Reload is long. Really really long. Enormously long. You're playing for a full year, one day at a time. Each day has multiple interactions and decision points. It typically takes more than 130 hours to meander your way through, and I've enjoyed every hour I've spent in it. Sponsored Links Windows Users Didn't Know This Simple Trick To Block All Ads (Do It Now) Safer Tech Tips School days You play as a transfer student, new to a town where people are afflicted by an "apathy sickness" that causes some to take their own lives. The culprit can be found in the Dark Hour, the secret time in the middle of the night when normal folks temporarily morph into coffins or get their souls melted. You and your friends, however, remain human during the Dark Hour and fight the shadows with the help of personas: alter-ego demigods, demons and other creatures plucked from mythology you can summon to fight on your behalf. LATEST VIDEOS FROM PCGAMER There are dozens of ways to achieve the same goals, and each day is different. In the daytime you work on leveling up your attributes—studying raises your Academics score, for example, and singing karaoke alone boosts your Courage. Each activity lasts just long enough to reward your decisions; I never feel like I'm grinding pointless minigames. Going out with friends or completing quests for them strengthens your Social Links, which in turn strengthen associated persona types. There are dozens of ways to achieve the same goals, and each day is different. Return to an activity, and you'll find it different than when you left it, and decisions matter. If I choose to stay awake in class (to earn Academics points) instead of sleeping (to earn Courage), the five pop-quiz history questions I answer will show up on the midterm exam, rewarding my attentiveness. It gives me real choices with real consequences, and I love it. Most of the life sim half of the game is dedicated to Social Links, the bonds you form with other characters. Social Links made Persona 3 Reload’s world feel real to me. There are more than 20 of them, linked to various arcana of personas that you can acquire. But that dry description doesn’t capture the delight of watching these relationships with other people slowly evolve in the game. Some are available right from the start; others require investing a huge amount of time just to begin. Social Links almost all involve meaningful character development. You might have a friendly bowl of ramen with your classmate Kenji, a very early Social Link that strengthens Magician-arcana personas. But before long you’re caught up in his cringe-inducing quest to ask a teacher out. Every time you meet up, something new has happened—she’s invited him over! But wait, there was a bride’s magazine on her coffee table. But now she’s being transferred—what should he do? He’ll ask you for advice, or pause for you to respond to what he has to say, with your responses affecting the strength of the link. You can’t pursue all of your Social Links at once, because there’s just too much to do. Some days, when my phone filled with messages from all the links who were available inviting me to different places to do different things, were intensely frustrating because I caredd about all of them. But the variety of their activities, and the slow and reasonably realistic nature of their dialog and dramas, made Social Links one of the best parts of the game, with the reward for seeing each one through more power for my personas in combat. It gives me real choices with real consequences, and I love it. Nights in the tower At night, the high school morphs into Tartarus, a giant tower of bad guys. School as a tower of evil to be conquered is practically a trope in anime and manga… Tartarus just makes it real, at the end of the (in-game) day. The dungeon itself is in some ways the weakest part of Persona 3 Reload. While the enemy design has that funhouse-mirror feel unique to this series, Tartarus is repetitive: Climb a floor. Bash the new breakables and open the chests (including new locked ones that take Twilight Shards you collect in the daytime world.) Attack any shadows you see. Repeat. The art design changes, but the adventures are the same. Fortunately, the depth of the persona system helps to keep things feeling fresh in combat. Your character has the unique ability to summon more than one persona and even fuse them to create new ones, like magician-cat-person Nekomata or elven knight Tam Lin. The combinations are wild, and if you don’t cheat by reading online guides, unpredictable. It's great fun turning persona cards that look like monsters or priestesses into a Swiss maid, or a fractured combination of lion and eagle and scorpion. (A warning: Personas are summoned when a teen hero puts what looks like a pistol to their head and fires. Suicide is a theme throughout, and this happens in every fight.) It's a ridiculously involved game, but my frustration in playing through it was never how long it took—it was not being able to do everything that I wanted to do, every day. That's a good thing. https://www.pcgamer.com/persona-3-reload-review/

CNN — Joe Biden’s Democratic base has been divided over the Israel-Hamas war. The public, at large, gives the president some of his worst approval ratings over his handling of the conflict. To some, including people within Biden’s own party, the public demonstrations against the war in Gaza remind them of the Vietnam War protests. To others, it’s a reminder of what they saw in the 1980s with the anti-apartheid movement against South Africa’s White-led government. But of all the problems Biden has to deal with as he seeks reelection, the war in the Middle East and the related divisions at home are not even close to being the top issue that will decide the 2024 election, according to recent polling. Few Americans say they will base their vote off the Israel-Hamas war. A recent NBC News poll found that just 7% of voters said they would vote for or against candidates because of their stance on the war. That’s not anywhere close to the top three answers – protecting democracy or constitutional rights, immigration or border security, and abortion – chosen by between 19% and 28% of voters. It was a similar story with a recent Gallup poll that asked Americans to name the most important problem facing the nation. A mere 2% answered with some version of the Israel-Hamas war (e.g., the Middle East conflict). That ranked 17th of all the answers given. Immigration was No.1 at 27%. Even among those younger than 35, only 2% said that the Israel-Hamas war was the most important problem. The top problem for this group was inflation, at 16%. An unpo[CENSORED]r war This is dramatically different from what we saw in 1968, when the Vietnam War forced President Lyndon Johnson to abandon his reelection bid. Back then, north of 40% of Americans regularly said that Vietnam was the most important problem. No other issue came anywhere close to being rated as high. The final Gallup poll to ask the question before the 1968 election showed 44% listing the Vietnam War as the most important problem, including 45% of those younger than 35. Now we should mention that there were American troops on the ground during the Vietnam War, something that is not the case with the current Israel-Hamas conflict. President Joe Biden speaks about abortion rights during a visit to Hillsborough Community College's Dale Mabry campus in Tampa, Florida, on April 23. RELATED ARTICLE Biden’s young voter problem keeps getting worse Still, given the low priority the war in Gaza is for most Americans, it’s not surprising that Biden’s overall job approval numbers are about the same as they were at the start of the conflict in October (about 40%). Biden’s standing against former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, is also about the same as where it was in early October. The pair are basically tied nationally, with perhaps Trump slightly ahead, depending on how you aggregate the polls. Biden, of course, does have a problem with younger voters, who are far more likely to disapprove of his handling of the Israel-Hamas war. If you average recent polling of those younger than 30 or 35, depending on the poll, Biden’s is well behind his 2020 showing. The final 2020 national polls had him ahead of Trump by about 29 points among younger voters. Today, he’s up by about 5 points, on average. Only a small fraction of that polling decline can be attributed to Biden’s war response. I say that because the president’s problems with young voters were apparent before the war. He was up over Trump by about 11 points, on average, in polls taken immediately before the conflict erupted, which was still 18 points down from the final 2020 polls. The risk of response The election is close enough that any drop in Biden’s standing against Trump could make the difference. But any attempt by Biden to satisfy younger voters could risk alienating the rest of the electorate. Although some have compared the campus protests with what we saw in the 1980s against South Africa’s apartheid government, the parallels aren’t evident in the polling. Back in 1985, the sentiment about South Africa ran overwhelmingly in favor of its Black po[CENSORED]tion, not the White-led apartheid government. When asked whom they sympathized with more, 64% of Americans indicated it was the Black South African po[CENSORED]tion, an ABC News poll found. Just 13% picked the White government. Joe Biden Donald Trump RELATED ARTICLE Why it will be tough for Biden to defeat Trump In the current conflict, more Americans sympathize with Israelis than Palestinians. A February poll from Gallup put the margin at 51% to 27%. A March poll from Quinnipiac put it at 43% to 30%. Those younger than 35 are more likely to sympathize with the Palestinians by an average of 50% to 31%, which would line up with Biden’s small polling decline among this group since early October. But this is a more equal divide than what we saw some 40 years ago. Sympathies ran 76% for the Black South African po[CENSORED]tion to 10% for the White-led government among Americans under age 35, according to the 1985 ABC News poll. On the whole, this leaves Biden between a rock and a hard place in the current Middle East conflict. He could take stances seen as more favorable to Palestinians, but he might lose voters who are more sympathetic to Israelis. Or he could stay the course and continue to bleed support among younger voters. The bottom line is that, like many things about the 2024 election, it’s not going to be easy for Biden to defeat Trump. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/03/politics/israel-hamas-war-biden-vietnam/index.html

This article is about the spiny mammal. For other uses, see Hedgehog (disambiguation). Hedgehogs[1] Temporal range: Late Eocene – Recent PreꞒꞒOSDCPTJKPgN European hedgehog Scientific classificationEdit this classification Domain: Eukaryota Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Eulipotyphla Family: Erinaceidae Subfamily: Erinaceinae G. Fischer, 1814 Type genus Erinaceus Linnaeus, 1758 Genera Atelerix Erinaceus Hemiechinus Mesechinus Paraechinus A hedgehog is a spiny mammal of the subfamily Erinaceinae, in the eulipotyphlan family Erinaceidae. There are seventeen species of hedgehog in five genera found throughout parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and in New Zealand by introduction. There are no hedgehogs native to Australia and no living species native to the Americas. However, the extinct genus Amphechinus was once present in North America. Hedgehogs share distant ancestry with shrews (family Soricidae), with gymnures possibly being the intermediate link, and they have changed little over the last fifteen million years.[2] Like many of the first mammals, they have adapted to a nocturnal way of life.[3] Their spiny protection resembles that of porcupines, which are rodents, and echidnas, a type of monotreme. Etymology The name hedgehog came into use around the year 1450, derived from the Middle English heyghoge, from heyg, hegge ("hedge"), because it frequents hedgerows, and hoge, hogge ("hog"), from its piglike snout.[4] Another name that is used is hedgepig.[5] Description Hedgehogs are easily recognized by their spines, which are hollow hairs made stiff with keratin.[6] Their spines are not poisonous or barbed and, unlike the quills of a porcupine, do not easily detach from their bodies. However, the immature animal's spines normally fall out as they are replaced with adult spines. This is called "quilling". Spines can also shed when the animal is diseased or under extreme stress. Hedgehogs are usually brown, with pale tips to the spines, though blonde hedgehogs are found on the Channel Island of Alderney. A skin-skeletal preparation Close-up of the last 5 millimetres (0.20 in) of a hedgehog spine (SEM microscopy) A hedgehog that feels threatened can roll into a tight ball. Hedgehogs roll into a tight spiny ball when threatened, tucking in the furry face, feet, and belly.[6] The hedgehog's back contains two large muscles that direct the quills. Some light-weight desert hedgehog species with fewer spines are more likely to flee or attack, ramming an intruder with the spines, rolling up only as a last resort. Hedgehogs are primarily nocturnal, with some species also active during the day. Hedgehogs sleep for a large portion of the day under bushes, grasses, rocks, or most commonly in dens dug underground. All wild hedgehogs can hibernate, though the duration depends on temperature, species, and abundance of food. Hedgehogs are fairly vocal, with a variety of grunts, snuffles and/or squeals. They occasionally perform a ritual called anointing.[7] When the animal encounters a new scent, it will lick and bite the source, then form a scented froth in its mouth and paste it on its spines with its tongue. Some experts believe this might serve to camouflage the hedgehog with the local scent, and might also lead to infection of predators poked by the spines. Anointing is sometimes also called anting after a similar behavior in birds. Like opossums, mice, and moles, hedgehogs have some natural immunity against some snake venom through the protein erinacin in their muscles, though in such small amounts that a viper bite may still be fatal.[8] In addition, hedgehogs are one of four known mammalian groups with natural protection against another snake venom, α-neurotoxin. Developing independently, pigs, honey badgers, mongooses, and hedgehogs all have mutations in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor that prevent the binding of the snake venom α-neurotoxin.[9] The sense of smell has been little studied in the hedgehog, as the olfactory part of the mammal brain is obscured inside the neopallium. Tests have suggested that hedgehogs share the same olfactory electrical activity as cats.[10] Diet Although traditionally classified in the abandoned order Insectivora, hedgehogs are omnivorous. They feed on insects, snails, frogs and toads, snakes, bird eggs, carrion, mushrooms, grass roots, berries, and melons.[6] Afghan hedgehogs devour berries in early spring after hibernation.[citation needed] Hedgehogs have been observed eating cat food left outdoors for pets, but this may not be a proper food for hedgehogs in captivity.[video:1] Hibernation When a hedgehog hibernates, its normal 30–35 °C (86–95 °F) body temperature decreases to 2–5 °C (36–41 °F).[11] Reproduction and lifespan Hedgehog gestation lasts 35–58 days, depending on species. The average litter is 3–4 newborns for larger species and 5–6 for smaller ones. As with many animals, it is not unusual for an adult male hedgehog to kill newborn males. Hedgehogs have a relatively long lifespan for their size. In captivity, lack of predators and controlled diet contribute to a lifespan of 8–10 years depending on size. In the wild, larger species live 4–7 years (some recorded up to 16 years), and smaller species live 2–4 years (4–7 in captivity). This compares to a mouse at 2 years and a large rat at 3–5 years. Newborn hoglets are blind, with their quills covered by a protective membrane which dries and shrinks over several hours,[12] and falls off after cleaning, allowing the quills to emerge.[13] Predators The various species have many predators: while forest hedgehogs are prey primarily to birds (especially owls) and ferrets, smaller species like the long-eared hedgehog are prey to foxes, wolves, and mongooses. Hedgehog bones have been found in the pellets of the Eurasian eagle owl.[14] In Britain, the main predator is the European badger. European hedgehog po[CENSORED]tions in the United Kingdom are lower in areas with many badgers,[15] and hedgehog rescue societies will not release hedgehogs into known badger territories.[16] Badgers also compete with hedgehogs for food.[17] Domestication Main article: Domesticated hedgehog African pygmy hedgehog being held The most common pet species of hedgehog are hybrids of the white-bellied hedgehog or four-toed hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) and the smaller North African hedgehog (A. algirus, pygmy hedgehog).[18] Other species kept as pets are the long-eared hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus) and the Indian long-eared hedgehog (H. collaris). As of 2019 it is illegal to own a hedgehog as a pet in four US states including Hawaii, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and California,[19] as well as New York City, Washington, DC and some Canadian municipalities, and breeding licenses are required. No such restrictions exist in most European countries with the exception of Scandinavia. In Italy, it is illegal to keep wild hedgehogs as pets.[20] As invasive species In areas where hedgehogs have been introduced, such as New Zealand and the islands of Scotland, the hedgehog has become a pest, lacking natural predators. In New Zealand it has decimated native species including insects, snails, lizards and ground-nesting birds, particularly shore birds.[21] Eradication can be troublesome. Attempts to eliminate hedgehogs from bird colonies on the Scottish islands of North Uist and Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides were met with international protest. Eradication began in 2003 with 690 hedgehogs killed, though animal welfare groups attempted rescues. By 2007, legal injunctions prohibited the killing, and in 2008, the elimination process was changed to trapping and releasing on the mainland.[22] In 2022, it was reported that the hedgehog po[CENSORED]tion in rural Britain was declining rapidly, down by 30%-75% since 2000.[23] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedgehog
