  1. A close-up of a gull's eye taken in Shetland has won the British Ecological Society's annual international photography competition. Rebecca Nason's overall winning shot captured a Kumlien's Gull with speckled markings - which she later realised were actually lice. The ecologist and photographer lives in Lerwick in the Northern Isles. She said her ecology and photography passions coming together to land the honour was "the icing on the cake". 'Hadn't travelled alone' She said she was "thrilled" to win, and explained: "In April I came across a scarce Kumlien's Gull as I fed bread to a growing number of Herring Gull sheltering from a Spring storm. "When the Kumlien's Gull approached to a good distance to allow for closer, full-frame shots, I started photographing the eye detail, noting a gorgeous granite-coloured iris with dark speckled plumage detail around the eye. "It was only when I got home I realised that the speckled patterns were in fact lice clustered around the eye - the Kumlien's Gull hadn't travelled alone. Other winning subjects included a rare sighting of the so-called "fairy of the Valencian forests", a recently- discovered cave-dwelling bug in Spain. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-59054453
  2. In addition to a successful line, even more dynamic in the 3-door “coupé” version, characterized by the original treatment of the rear window, this first generation of C4 is a fine alternative to the Peugeot 307, which is more sought after and therefore more po[CENSORED]r. In terms of behavior, it has nothing to envy its cousin, whose excellent running gear it uses: rigorous, incisive and very well cushioned, it will adapt to any young driver, especially as it has series of an anti-slip ESC and offers very efficient braking. Its finish is also particularly neat for the time. There remains a firmer damping and a little less generous rear roominess than the 307. Identical to that of the Peugeot 206 cc, its 1.6 16v 110 hp, widely distributed and also available with automatic transmission, suits it perfectly. Reliability 4/5 Good reliability in gasoline, most of the concerns affecting diesel engines. Transmission: clutch bearing sometimes fragile; crisp 3 / 4th sync. Steering becoming harsh or noisy (electric pump). Running gear: slamming at the front (engine cradle to be tightened); squeaky rear shock absorbers, to be replaced. Interior: air conditioning or window regulators malfunctions. 3. Social media users in Israel are mocking Facebook's company name change to Meta, as it sounds similar to the Hebrew word for "dead." Many Twitter users scoffed at the social media company's rebrand -- revealed by founder Mark Zuckerberg earlier this week -- using the hashtag #FacebookDead. "Somebody did not do their #branding research," one post read. Dr Nirit Weiss-Blatt, author of The Techlash and Tech Crisis Communication, tweeted: "In Hebrew, *Meta* means *Dead* The Jewish community will ridicule this name for years to come." "Grave error?? Facebook's new name Meta means dead in Hebrew. Hilarious. #FacebookDead" another user tweeted. Zuckerberg's efforts to revamp Facebook come as the company faces what could be its most potent scandal since it launched in 2004. The social media giant is under the spotlight following the publication this week of "The Facebook Papers," a series of internal documents obtained by 17 news organizations, including CNN, that underpin whistleblower Frances Haugen's claims the company is riddled with institutional shortcomings. The documents reveal how Facebook has propelled misinformation, struggled to eliminate human trafficking-related content on the site, and tried to increase its teenage audience, despite internal research suggesting that its platforms, especially Instagram, can have an adverse effect on their mental health. Facebook isn't the first company to be ridiculed after its branding didn't translate abroad. In 2019, Kim Kardashian West was accused of cultural appropriation after debuting her shapewear brand, which she initially named Kimono. Kardashian even appeared to have trademarked the word "kimono," a decision that the mayor of Kyoto, Daisaku Kadokawa, criticized in an open letter on Facebook. "We think that the names for 'Kimono' are the asset shared with all humanity who love Kimono and its culture therefore they should not be monopolized," Kadokawa wrote. Kardashian changed the name of her brand to Skims later that year. In 2017, McDonald's name change in China raised eyebrows. Customers were left confused when the company swapped Maidanglao, a Chinese iteration of the English name, to Jingongmen, which loosely translates to "Golden Arches." One customer said it "sounds like a furniture store." And when the Nissan Moco was launched in the early 2000s, Spanish-speaking customers may have looked twice, as the word "moco" translates to "bogey." Needless to say, the name was only used in Japan. https://edition.cnn.com/2021/10/30/tech/hebrew-speakers-mock-facebook-meta-rebrand-intl-scli/index.html
  4. Instagram has announced that Link Stickers are rolling out to everyone on the Stories feature. Previously available for businesses and influencers, now anyone can create a story and attach a web link, making it much easier for anyone to find their favourite product or brand. Instagram Stories enable a user to create a quick snapshot of what they may have seen on their travels, and this Story can last in 24 hours, where it expires. Similar to Snapchat Stories, the feature has been quickly picked up by Instagram users since its debut in 2016. With link stickers now rolling out to everyone, it's something that creators can use to provide access to external content, sellers can use to link to goods for sale, and anyone can use to provide a link to a site that that provides additional information or context for their Story. Stickers have long played an important role in numerous messaging apps and social networking platforms, and Instagram is no different in this regard. For the most part, stickers are simply amusing aesthetic additions to an image, but they can also be useful. In addition to cartoon-style stickers, users have been able to add location, question and poll stickers to their stories for a while. If this sounds a little familiar, it's because link sharing is not a completely new feature. Previously, however, the option to share links via "swipe-up" in Stories was only available to a limited number of people – specifically verified users and those with a certain follower count. With the feature now available, you might well be wondering how to use it. In short, it is very simple, and very much the same process as adding other special stickers to your Stories. https://www.techradar.com/news/instagram-is-making-stories-even-more-useful-with-links-particularly-for-creators
  5. Redmi Note 11 series is all set to launch on Thursday, October 28. The range has been teased heavily in the past and the latest teaser hints its speakers. The Redmi Note 11 series speakers are tuned by JBL audio and the company says that they are placed in a symmetrical manner to ensure precise yet powerful audio. The Redmi Note 11 series will also retain the 3.5mm audio jack. Alongside the Redmi Note 11, the company has confirmed the launch of the Redmi Watch 2 at the event. In a Weibo post, Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing teased JBL symmetry audio for the Redmi Note 11 series. The phone will have speakers on both the top and bottom. They will be placed in a manner that will offer greater volume and less distortion. In addition, the Redmi Note 11 series is also teased to support Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio. The Redmi Note 11 series is likely to include three models – Redmi Note 11, Redmi Note 11 Pro, and Redmi Note 11 Pro+. Teasers suggest that the Redmi Note 11 Pro will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 920 SoC based on 6nm architecture featuring two Cortex-A78 cores and a Mali-G68 MC4 GPU. Leaks claim that the Redmi Note 11 may be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 810 SoC, while the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ is said to be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 AI SoC. All three Redmi Note phones are reported to come with 120Hz displays and include 5,000mAh batteries. Additionally, all three Redmi models are tipped to come with up to 256GB of onboard storage. The phones may also have a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection as standard and feature aluminium alloy-based middle frame. https://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/redmi-note-11-series-specifications-jbl-symmetry-audio-dual-speakers-teaser-launch-date-october-28-2589964
  6. We've been waiting a long time for Intel Alder Lake. Or at least it's felt like a long time because this is one Intel CPU generation we're super excited to try out, with its hybrid architecture and more up-to-date process node. Throughout that time we've had drips and drabs of information about the upcoming chips, soon to be Intel's 12th Gen, but today we get the motherlode. That's because Intel has released the full specification of the 12th Gen, Alder Lake chips, meaning we can finally put all those rumours to rest and talk with some real confidence. Not that it wasn't abundantly clear what was going on with Intel Alder Lake up until now, but now we've got it down in writing. Here's what to expect from the first wave of Alder Lake chips. You may have noticed a lack of TDP, or Thermal Design Power, in that table. That's because Intel is officially doing away with that for this generation, and is instead listing these chips with Processor Base Power and Maximum Turbo Power in Watts. In operation, you should expect to see the Processor Base Power when the processor is running closer to its standard stock frequency, and Maximum Turbo Power when the chip is boosting up to higher frequencies, as listed in the table above. Essentially, this appears a rebadge of the PL1 and PL2 specs we've seen before, which stand for the expected long-term power draw of a chip (PL1) and the short-term maximum power draw of a chip (PL2). Though Intel is also listing Maximum Turbo Power as "PL1 = PL2", which makes things a little more confusing. https://www.pcgamer.com/intel-alder-lake-12-gen-specs-release-date/
  7. Samsung Galaxy A03 India launch could be around the corner as its support pages are now live on Samsung's website in India and Russia. As usual, the support pages do not divulge any information about the upcoming smartphone apart from its model number. However, previous reports suggest that the Samsung Galaxy A03 may be powered by a Unisoc chipset paired with either 2GB or 3GB of RAM. The upcoming smartphone has also been tipped to pack a 5,000mAh battery. Samsung is yet to announce the budget-friendly smartphone. The support pages for the Samsung Galaxy A03 on Samsung's website in India and Russia were spotted by 91mobiles. These pages mention that the soon-to-be-launched Galaxy smartphone will have SM-A032F/DS as its model number. The DS suffix on the model designation hints at the dual-SIM capabilities of the smartphone. Apart from this, no other specifications of the Samsung Galaxy A03 were mentioned. Last week, Samsung Galaxy A03 was spotted on the Wi-Fi Alliance certification website with the model number SM-A032F/DS. The listing mentions that the upcoming smartphone will support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band with 802.11 b/g/n and Wi-Fi Direct. Furthermore, it mentions that the smartphone will run Android 11 out-of-the-box.Late last month, the Samsung Galaxy A03 was also spotted on the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Geekbench benchmark listings. The US FCC listing suggests that the smartphone will pack a 5,000mAh battery. It also mentions the network connectivity options for the upcoming Galaxy A03 and there is no mention of 5G connectivity. The Geekbench listing suggests that Samsung Galaxy A03 will be powered by a Unisoc processor paired with 2GB of RAM. The smartphone is also speculated to get a 3GB RAM variant, similar to its predecessor Galaxy A02. Furthermore, the upcoming Galaxy smartphone is also shown to run Android 11 with possibly a One UI 3.1 (Core) skin on top. https://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/samsung-a03-support-page-india-launch-russia-specifications-unisoc-processor-sm-a032f-ds-galaxy-2588659

The update focuses on three aspects - staying connected, finding focus with productivity, and privacy. A release date for iOS 15 was confirmed at the September 14 Apple event, where the company announced the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and other devices. Although the public beta went live in June, some features have since been delayed to iOS 15.1, such as SharePlay. If you're struggling to update to iOS 15, we've created a guide to help you update your iPhone to the newest software..com/forums/forum/828-software/?do=add Apple has brought new features to FaceTime in iOS 15, with a focus on making it easier to connect with family and friends, while improving the audio and visual quality. Spatial audio can be used with an iPhone XS and above, which means 3D audio gives the impression that your recipients are in the same room as you. Voice isolation now focuses on your voice only, and blocks out any other ambient noise. There's also Wide Spectrum, which focuses on you and the environment around you. There's also Grid View, which shows a group call, alongside Portrait Mode now able to be used, where the background is now blurred and focuses on you. There's also FaceTime links, which can generate a link to help plan a call, similar to how a Google Meet link works, and can be accessed by others who have an Android or Windows device. SharePlay is also new in iOS 15, where you can share music, watch TV shows and movies, alongside sharing your screen, so you can show a recipient how you use a certain app. You can also extend SharePlay to an AppleTV, which is helpful especially for a movie. This is also an API, so an app can work with this very soon. Supported services such as Disney+, Twitch, ESPN, TikTok and more are using SharePlay for iOS 15 and above. https://www.techradar.com/news/ios-15-update
  9. An unnamed Microsoft Azure customer has recently been targeted by a profound 2.4 Tbps DDoS attack. Thankfully the cloud service was able to fend off the onslaught and, despite its intensity, the customer's site remains unaffected. Azure caters for huge household names such as Ubisoft, eBay, Samsung, and Boeing... even the City of Taipei council relies on the cloud data service. As such, we're pretty glad to hear the attacks were unsuccessful. The charge came in the form of a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) flood, in which attackers target random host ports with IP packets in order to overwhelm their network and force sites offline. The intrusion—which originated from around 70,000 sources across the USA, Vietnam, and Taiwan, among other countries—lasted just 10 minutes. But each short volley took mere seconds to reach heights of 2.4 Tbps, 0.55 Tbps, and 1.7 Tbps (via The Verge). That puts it down as the most intense barrage Azure has ever had to deal with, at 140% higher than the company's 2020's DDoS attack. An announcement from Microsoft Azure notes: "Attacks of this size demonstrate the ability of bad actors to wreak havoc by flooding targets with gigantic traffic volumes trying to choke network capacity. "However, Azure’s DDoS protection platform, built on distributed DDoS detection and mitigation pipelines, can absorb tens of terabits of DDoS attacks." It makes a nice change to report on an attack that was sidestepped, rather than one which causes a mega-calamity. But as always this is a frightful reminder that cybercrime is not going away, or letting up any time soon. https://www.pcgamer.com/huge-microsoft-azure-ddos-udp-attack-resisted/

The tech giant is boosting one of its less-celebrated products to give enterprise users an easier way to search online. The update means that enterprise users will now get their historical searches as suggestions in the autosuggest pane on Bing and Microsoft Search in Bing, according to the official Microsoft 365 roadmap entry. Bing, for anyone who may need reminding, is Microsoft's own search engine, designed to rival the likes of Google in offering information to users across the globe. The new update should mean that enterprise users looking to quickly find files that they've searched for or opened before will no longer need to manually trawl through endless files and folders in search of the elusive location. The update is still currently in development, but Microsoft will doubtless be keen to get it out soon and help boost Bing engagement. The feature is set to be available to Microsoft Search users across the globe via the company's general availability route, meaning web, desktop and mobile users will all be able to utilize it upon release. Microsoft has kept its support for Bing despite the huge disadvantage versus Google, which has dominated the web search market for years. https://www.techradar.com/news/one-of-microsofts-most-hated-windows-11-tools-might-actually-be-getting-a-useful-upgrade
  12. AMD has announced a partnership with 343 Industries to support the development of Halo Infinite, and it's celebrating the news by showing off the new Radeon RX 6900 XT Halo Infinite Limited Edition graphics card. A card you can't buy, apparently. This comes on a frantic Halo news day since 343 Industries released a video highlighting all the PC-specific features coming to Halo Infinite when it launches, like custom key bindings, turning your PC into a LAN server even Discord connectivity across platforms. This collaboration shouldn't come as too big of a surprise since the AMD RDNA 2 architecture that powers the Radeon RX 6000 series is one and the same as the one found in the Xbox Series S and X. As the sole PC partner, the main focus of this team-up will be on "game title optimizations that benefit a vast range of hardware and device endpoints from ultra-high-end gaming powerhouses to older and cost-effective gaming machines as well as the entire Xbox family of consoles," according to AMD. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Halo Infinite Limited Edition is modeled after Master Chief's classic Mjolnir armor. There's even a small Cortana-blue light on the back of the card that's supposed to mimic the AI slot in the back of Chief's helmet. If you can't get enough of Halo branded merchandise, 343 also teamed with Razer to work on a line of PC peripherals that features a whole lot of green. So, how can you get one of these GPUs? Well, that's the thing. You can't buy them because AMD isn't selling them. AMD said in a blog post that they "will be working with the Halo team and other partners on multiple opportunities over the coming weeks to allow you to get your hands on one." As for performance, in our review of RX 6900 XT, we weren't too blown away by it compared to the RX 6800 XT. But hey, offered one as a prize, I wouldn't turn it down. I'd imagine the opportunities will come in contests and giveaways—basically, any way to keep the GPUs away from bots and resellers as we get closer to the Halo Infinite launch. In fact, Razer just announced they have 117 Halo GPUs to giveaway at RazerCON 2021. https://www.pcgamer.com/this-halo-infinite-themed-rx-6900-xt-gpu-is-so-limited-edition-you-cant-actually-buy-one/

  16. A conservation charity has proposed connecting habitats in a part of the Highlands to create a "superhighway" for red squirrels and other animals. Woodland Trust Scotland hopes to raise £8m to buy 4,500-acre Couldoran Estate in Wester Ross, which neighbours land the charity owns at Ben Shieldaig. The trust would plant native trees at Couldoran to form a "mosaic of habitats" for wildlife to move through. More than 1,000 acres (405 ha) could be planted with woodland. The trust said the 4,500-acre (1,821 ha) Couldoran Estate was largely bare of trees. It has launched a public appeal to raise the funds needed to buy it. Rewilding project for 500,000 acres of Highlands Bridge offers squirrels safe crossing The charity said new woodland would help link Shieldaig Pinewood Site of Special Scientific Interest with Rassal Ashwood Site of Special Scientific Interest, enabling red squirrels to "move more freely" from tree to tree from one area to another. The charity said lichens, mosses and insects would be also be able to spread. Trust director Alastair Seaman said: "Next door at Shieldaig, we see birds such as golden eagle, peregrine, red-throated diver, greenshank and golden plover. "Pine martens, water voles, badgers, red squirrels and mountain hares have also been spotted. "If we can improve (tree) canopy cover at Couldoran, we expect to find many of these species moving in as their range and habitat improves and expands. Wildcats were in the area until the 1960s and we've heard of potential sightings more recently too." https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-58984952
  17. In discussions with the English team M-Sport for a possible return to a few rounds of the 2022 World Rally Championship, Sébastien Loeb tested this Tuesday, in Spain, the Ford Puma Rally1 hybrid which will debut in the WRC at the next Monte-Carlo. Sébastien Loeb is still working on a possible part-time return to the WRC next year with the M-Sport-Ford team. "There were discussions but the last contacts date back to July," he told us in an interview in early September. Contact has visibly been reconnected since the Alsatian was this Tuesday at the wheel of the Ford Puma Rally1 hybrid set to debut at Monte-Carlo 2022. The session took place on asphalt, in Catalonia, where Thierry Neuville won the round on Sunday. Spanish WRC. If the Spanish press concludes that Loeb, already involved in rally-raid and Extreme E, will be in WRC next year, the thing is still far from being recorded according to our information. The idea continues to grow but no agreement has yet been found between the various parties involved. Ford has already recruited Irishman Craig Breen to drive his new Puma. Frenchman Adrien Fourmaux will also take the wheel as official driver, although the announcement has not yet been made. For his part, Sébastien Ogier will participate in 2022 in a few rounds with Toyota. We do not yet know the number. https://www.lequipe.fr/Rallye/Actualites/Sebastien-loeb-a-teste-la-ford-puma-rally-1-en-vue-d-un-eventuel-retour-en-wrc-l-an-prochain/1293166
  19. Windows 11 is now out and available for people to install, but many people are encountering a problem where the operating system refuses to install, even if their PCs meet the Windows 11 system requirements. As Windows Latest reports, many people are erroneously seeing a “This PC doesn’t currently meet all the system requirements for Windows 11” message during the Windows 11 installation process. Read our Windows 11 review Here's how to download Windows 11 The pros and cons of Windows 11 for businesses When installing Windows 11, some people are prompted to run the PC Health Check app to make sure their PC is compatible with the new operating system – such as if it supports TPM 2.0, a security feature that Microsoft has insisted PCs need if they are to run Windows 11. The idea is that the PC Health Check will see if your PC can run Windows 11. If it can, you can then proceed with the installation. If it can’t, the PC Health Check app will outline steps to take to make your PC compatible. In some cases, this involves enabling TPM support in the PC’s BIOS. Once that’s done, the PC Health Check app should give the PC the all clear, and the Windows 11 installation process can continue. The problem is, that some people have found that even after the PC Health Check app says the device can run Windows 11, the Windows 11 installation app refuses to continue, saying “This PC doesn’t currently meet all the system requirements for Windows 11.” This is immensely frustrating, and users who have encountered it have found that even restarting the PC and trying to install Windows 11 again does not fix the issue. At the moment it doesn’t seem like you can do much about this problem, unless you fancy downloading the Windows 11 ISO and use it to do a fresh install of Windows 11 – but that will result in you losing your files and apps. The good news is that Microsoft is already working on fixing the issue, with Microsoft support staff telling Windows Latest that “We are aware of the issue, and we’re currently working for a fix.” https://www.techradar.com/news/new-windows-11-fail-is-accidently-telling-people-they-cant-upgrade

The headline-grabbing news here is that the drive boasts impressive read and write speeds of 7,000MB/s and is available in capacities up to 4TB. The drive also ships with a low-profile graphene aluminium heat spreader, to help keep it cool in operation. Peel that heat spreader off, and you'll find a Phison E18 controller along with 3D TLC NAND. We've seen such a pairing before in the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus, which managed some impressive performance figures all at a great price point. We don't have the word of Kingston's pricing for its latest SSD yet, but it'll be entering a bust marketplace, and will need to do something stand out from the crowd. There are plenty of quality PCIe 4.0 SSDs out there right now. A total of four models will be available on release, with the single-sided 512GB and 1024GB drives measuring 2.21mm thick, while the 2048GB and 4096GB models are 3.5mm thick. This difference also shows how many of the Phison E18 controller's channels are po[CENSORED]ted, well that and the throughput. The two bigger capacity drives have the highest write throughput, managing the aforementioned 7,000MB/s, while the 1024GB model sits at 6,000MB/s and the 512GB model coming in a lowly 3,900MB/s. They all promise read performance of 7,000MB/s though. The random 4K read/writes also favour the larger drives, at 1,000,000 IOPs for reads and writes. The Kingston KC3000 will be available on October 25. https://www.pcgamer.com/kingston-announces-its-first-blisteringly-fast-7000mbs-nvme-ssd/
  21. Google is updating critical features for the millions of drivers who depend on its technology to help them get around. The tech giant announced the upcoming changes Thursday to Google Assistant and Android Auto driving modes and a new automaker, Honda, will have Google technology installed in its vehicles. Google said that drivers using Google Assistant on Android phones will soon see a new dashboard they say will reduce "the need to fiddle with your phone while also making sure you stay focused on the road." Instead of scrolling while driving, Google said drivers could tap to see who just called or sent a text and have access to several apps to listen to music with the new dashboard. The dashboard will also include a new messaging update where drivers can say, "Hey Google, turn on auto-read," to hear their new messages read aloud when they come in and respond by voice. These new changes for drivers are apparently part of what Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and parent company Alphabet, said in a blog earlier this year to make its technologies "universally accessible and useful." For example, users of Android Auto, Google's smartphone app for vehicles, via their Android phones will now be able to see music, news, and podcast recommendations from Google Assistant and they can set which app launches whenever Android Auto starts. Those Android Auto users will soon be able to play games appearing on the vehicle's display with a new feature called GameSnacks while they're waiting or parking. Additionally, Android Auto and Android phone users can make contactless payments for gas using Google Pay. This feature is available at more than 32,000 gas stations across the U.S., including ExxonMobil, Conoco, 76 stations and Phillips 66. On Thursday, Google announced that Japanese automaker Honda will be the latest to have Google built-in technology in its vehicles beginning in 2022. Honda, which announced in April it's aiming to sell only electric vehicles in North America by 2040, will join the likes of Ford, General Motors, Polestar, Renault and Volvo that will have its future vehicles released with default Android operating systems. The Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge are among the current models with Google's built-in tech. https://techxplore.com/news/2021-09-google-car-android-auto-fresh.html
  22. "We know this was organized online. We know that," she said in an interview with Reuters. "We... took down QAnon, Proud Boys, Stop the Steal, anything that was talking about possible violence last week. Our enforcement's never perfect so I'm sure there were still things on Facebook. I think these events were largely organized on platforms that don't have our abilities to stop hate and don't have our standards and don't have our transparency." But internal Facebook (FB) documents reviewed by CNN suggest otherwise. The documents, including an internal post-mortem and one document showing in real time countermeasures Facebook employees were belatedly implementing, paint a picture of a company that was in fact fundamentally unprepared for how the Stop the Steal movement used its platform to organize, and that only truly swung into action after the movement had turned violent. Asked by CNN about Sandberg's quote and whether she stood by it, a Facebook spokesperson pointed to the greater context around Sandberg's quote. She had been noting that Jan. 6 organization happened largely online, including but not limited to on Facebook's platforms, the spokesperson said. The documents were provided by Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen as evidence to support disclosures she made to the Securities and Exchange Commission and provided to Congress in redacted form by Haugen's legal counsel. The redacted versions were obtained by a consortium of 17 US news organizations, including CNN. One of Haugen's central allegations about the company focuses on the attack on the Capitol. In a SEC disclosure she alleges, "Facebook misled investors and the public about its role perpetuating misinformation and violent extremism relating to the 2020 election and January 6th insurrection." Facebook denies the premise of Haugen's conclusions and says Haugen has cherry-picked documents to present an unfair portrayal of the company. "Hindsight is 20:20," the author or authors of the analysis, who are not identifiable from what was provided, write. "[A]t the time it was very difficult to know whether what we were seeing was a coordinated effort to delegitimize the election, or whether it was protected free expression by users who were afraid and confused and deserved our empathy. But hindsight being 20:20 makes it all the more important to look back to learn what we can about the growth of the election delegitimatizing movements that grew, spread conspiracy, and helped incite the Capitol insurrection." The analysis found that the policies and procedures Facebook had in place were simply not up to the task of slowing, much less halting, the "meteoric" growth of Stop the Steal. For instance, those behind the analysis noted that Facebook treated each piece of content and person or group within Stop the Steal individually, rather than as part of a whole, with dire results. "Almost all of the fastest growing FB Groups were Stop the Steal during their peak growth," the analysis says. "Because we were looking at each entity individually, rather than as a cohesive movement, we were only able to take down individual Groups and Pages once they exceeded a violation threshold. We were not able to act on simple objects like posts and comments because they individually tended not to violate, even if they were surrounded by hate, violence, and misinformation." This approach did eventually change, according to the analysis -- after it was too late. "After the Capitol insurrection and a wave of Storm the Capitol events across the country, we realized that the individual delegitimizing Groups, Pages, and slogans did constitute a cohesive movement," the analysis says. This was not the only way in which Facebook had failed to anticipate something like Stop the Steal, or in which its response was lacking. Facebook has for some time now had a policy banning "coordinated inauthentic behavior" on its platforms. This ban allows it to take action against, for instance, the Russian troll army that worked to interfere with the 2016 US election through accounts and pages set up to look as if they were American But, the analysis notes with emphasis, the company had "little policy around coordinated authentic harm" -- that is, little to stop people organizing under their real names and not hiding their intention to get the country to reject the results of the election. Stop the Steal and Patriot Party groups "were not directly mobilizing offline harm, nor were they directly promoting militarization," the analysis says. "Instead, they were amplifying and normalizing misinformation and violent hate in a way that delegitimized a free and fair democratic election. The harm existed at the network level: an individual's speech is protected, but as a movement, it normalized delegitimization and hate in a way that resulted in offline harm and harm to the norms underpinning democracy." https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/10/22/business/january-6-insurrection-facebook-papers/index.html

  23. Fixes for two Windows 11 performance issues discovered at the beginning of October are now available for download. The bugs hindered the performance of some Ryzen CPUs after upgrading to Windows 11. AMD just put up an update on its knowledge base blog, flagging both items as "issue solved; solution available." "As of October 21, 2021: Windows 11 update KB5006746 fully resolves the performance impact of Issue 1 described in this article," reads the blog post. "AMD Chipset Driver 3.10.08.506 fully resolves the performance impact of Issue 2 described in this article. AMD has verified that the performance and behavior of compatible AMD processors are working as intended on Windows 11 subsequent to the installation of these updates. AMD and Microsoft recommend that users promptly install this update on affected systems." Issue 1 was a problem with the measured and functional L3 cache latency nearly tripling on certain apps and games (meaning that the CPU was accessing its memory way too slowly). Issue 2 was with AMD's "Preferred Core" feature not working correctly. Preferred Core allows users to assign apps to the fastest core on the chip manually. The updates come now after first appearing last week in the Microsoft Insiders build of Windows 11. So, it was only a matter of time before both fixes became available. These AMD bugs were just one of a handful of launch-day bugs users have encountered during the Windows 11 rollout. A fix was in the works as soon as Microsoft and AMD confirmed the issues. The L3 fix should be available now as a Windows 11 software update under Microsoft Knowledgebase ID 5006746. Open up Windows Update, and you'll see it listed. The preferred core fix is available as an AMD Chipset Driver package update under version 3.10.08.506 within the Apps and Features interface of Windows 11. https://www.pcgamer.com/the-fixes-for-the-windows-11-bugs-that-were-hurting-amd-ryzen-performance-are-now-live/
  24. The Google Pixel 6 is an exciting phone that could compete with pricier flagship phones, but we still don't know enough about its Google-designed Tensor chipset to make the call now. As it is, the Pixel 6 is a bold new direction in design, cameras, and software with Android 12 out of the box, and we're eager to test it fully and deliver our final verdict soon. On paper, the Pixel 6 is a more premium device than its predecessors, with a sleeker design and more powerful cameras. Most notably, along with the pricier Pixel 6 Pro, it packs Google’s new Tensor chipset, the first silicon built by the company – but since we can’t talk about performance of the phone yet, we can only look forward to testing it fully. While we don’t yet know how the Pixel 6 performs compared to other phones, we know it packs 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage, and a 4,612mAh battery – all good specs for the price. The 6.4-inch Full HD (2400 x 1080) OLED display is larger than the screens on most flagships, and with a 90Hz refresh rate, offers smoother browsing than phones that max out at 60Hz – although 90Hz is really the minimum we’d now expect to see on a phone in the Pixel 6’s premium-mid-range price tier. Read our hands-on Google Pixel 6 Pro review Google Pixel 6 vs Google Pixel 6 Pro Google Pixel 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S21 It’s the phone’s cameras that many Pixel fans are likely to be most excited about, as Google finally gives us higher-megapixel sensors worthy of its outstanding photo software. The two rear cameras are a 50MP main shooter and 12MP ultra-wide camera with a 114-degree Field of View – again, we haven’t had time to try these out, but we’re looking forward to the sharper photos they promise to deliver, and the capability to capture images at massive resolutions. The Pixel 6 Pro is significantly pricier than the standard-issue Pixel 6, but both pack the eagerly-anticipated Tensor chipset – we’re looking forward to testing both phones extensively, and letting you know whether the Pro’s extra features are worth the higher price tag. Right now though, here’s our first look at the Google Pixel 6. The Google Pixel 6 was unveiled on October 19 alongside the Google Pixel 6 Pro, and both have a global release date of October 25. The Google Pixel 6 price starts at $599 / £599 / AU$999 for 128GB of storage, and costs AU$1,129 for the 256GB configuration in Australia (we’re still waiting on this model's price in other regions). That starting price is lower than the Google Pixel 5, which came in a single configuration with a $699 / £599 / AU$999 price tag (and a sub-flagship chipset). https://www.techradar.com/reviews/google-pixel-6
