  1. A close-up of a gull's eye taken in Shetland has won the British Ecological Society's annual international photography competition. Rebecca Nason's overall winning shot captured a Kumlien's Gull with speckled markings - which she later realised were actually lice. The ecologist and photographer lives in Lerwick in the Northern Isles. She said her ecology and photography passions coming together to land the honour was "the icing on the cake". 'Hadn't travelled alone' She said she was "thrilled" to win, and explained: "In April I came across a scarce Kumlien's Gull as I fed bread to a growing number of Herring Gull sheltering from a Spring storm. "When the Kumlien's Gull approached to a good distance to allow for closer, full-frame shots, I started photographing the eye detail, noting a gorgeous granite-coloured iris with dark speckled plumage detail around the eye. "It was only when I got home I realised that the speckled patterns were in fact lice clustered around the eye - the Kumlien's Gull hadn't travelled alone. Other winning subjects included a rare sighting of the so-called "fairy of the Valencian forests", a recently- discovered cave-dwelling bug in Spain. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-59054453
  2. In addition to a successful line, even more dynamic in the 3-door “coupé” version, characterized by the original treatment of the rear window, this first generation of C4 is a fine alternative to the Peugeot 307, which is more sought after and therefore more po[CENSORED]r. In terms of behavior, it has nothing to envy its cousin, whose excellent running gear it uses: rigorous, incisive and very well cushioned, it will adapt to any young driver, especially as it has series of an anti-slip ESC and offers very efficient braking. Its finish is also particularly neat for the time. There remains a firmer damping and a little less generous rear roominess than the 307. Identical to that of the Peugeot 206 cc, its 1.6 16v 110 hp, widely distributed and also available with automatic transmission, suits it perfectly. Reliability 4/5 Good reliability in gasoline, most of the concerns affecting diesel engines. Transmission: clutch bearing sometimes fragile; crisp 3 / 4th sync. Steering becoming harsh or noisy (electric pump). Running gear: slamming at the front (engine cradle to be tightened); squeaky rear shock absorbers, to be replaced. Interior: air conditioning or window regulators malfunctions. 3. Social media users in Israel are mocking Facebook's company name change to Meta, as it sounds similar to the Hebrew word for "dead." Many Twitter users scoffed at the social media company's rebrand -- revealed by founder Mark Zuckerberg earlier this week -- using the hashtag #FacebookDead. "Somebody did not do their #branding research," one post read. Dr Nirit Weiss-Blatt, author of The Techlash and Tech Crisis Communication, tweeted: "In Hebrew, *Meta* means *Dead* The Jewish community will ridicule this name for years to come." "Grave error?? Facebook's new name Meta means dead in Hebrew. Hilarious. #FacebookDead" another user tweeted. Zuckerberg's efforts to revamp Facebook come as the company faces what could be its most potent scandal since it launched in 2004. The social media giant is under the spotlight following the publication this week of "The Facebook Papers," a series of internal documents obtained by 17 news organizations, including CNN, that underpin whistleblower Frances Haugen's claims the company is riddled with institutional shortcomings. The documents reveal how Facebook has propelled misinformation, struggled to eliminate human trafficking-related content on the site, and tried to increase its teenage audience, despite internal research suggesting that its platforms, especially Instagram, can have an adverse effect on their mental health. Facebook isn't the first company to be ridiculed after its branding didn't translate abroad. In 2019, Kim Kardashian West was accused of cultural appropriation after debuting her shapewear brand, which she initially named Kimono. Kardashian even appeared to have trademarked the word "kimono," a decision that the mayor of Kyoto, Daisaku Kadokawa, criticized in an open letter on Facebook. "We think that the names for 'Kimono' are the asset shared with all humanity who love Kimono and its culture therefore they should not be monopolized," Kadokawa wrote. Kardashian changed the name of her brand to Skims later that year. In 2017, McDonald's name change in China raised eyebrows. Customers were left confused when the company swapped Maidanglao, a Chinese iteration of the English name, to Jingongmen, which loosely translates to "Golden Arches." One customer said it "sounds like a furniture store." And when the Nissan Moco was launched in the early 2000s, Spanish-speaking customers may have looked twice, as the word "moco" translates to "bogey." Needless to say, the name was only used in Japan. https://edition.cnn.com/2021/10/30/tech/hebrew-speakers-mock-facebook-meta-rebrand-intl-scli/index.html
  4. Instagram has announced that Link Stickers are rolling out to everyone on the Stories feature. Previously available for businesses and influencers, now anyone can create a story and attach a web link, making it much easier for anyone to find their favourite product or brand. Instagram Stories enable a user to create a quick snapshot of what they may have seen on their travels, and this Story can last in 24 hours, where it expires. Similar to Snapchat Stories, the feature has been quickly picked up by Instagram users since its debut in 2016. With link stickers now rolling out to everyone, it's something that creators can use to provide access to external content, sellers can use to link to goods for sale, and anyone can use to provide a link to a site that that provides additional information or context for their Story. Stickers have long played an important role in numerous messaging apps and social networking platforms, and Instagram is no different in this regard. For the most part, stickers are simply amusing aesthetic additions to an image, but they can also be useful. In addition to cartoon-style stickers, users have been able to add location, question and poll stickers to their stories for a while. If this sounds a little familiar, it's because link sharing is not a completely new feature. Previously, however, the option to share links via "swipe-up" in Stories was only available to a limited number of people – specifically verified users and those with a certain follower count. With the feature now available, you might well be wondering how to use it. In short, it is very simple, and very much the same process as adding other special stickers to your Stories. https://www.techradar.com/news/instagram-is-making-stories-even-more-useful-with-links-particularly-for-creators
  5. Redmi Note 11 series is all set to launch on Thursday, October 28. The range has been teased heavily in the past and the latest teaser hints its speakers. The Redmi Note 11 series speakers are tuned by JBL audio and the company says that they are placed in a symmetrical manner to ensure precise yet powerful audio. The Redmi Note 11 series will also retain the 3.5mm audio jack. Alongside the Redmi Note 11, the company has confirmed the launch of the Redmi Watch 2 at the event. In a Weibo post, Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing teased JBL symmetry audio for the Redmi Note 11 series. The phone will have speakers on both the top and bottom. They will be placed in a manner that will offer greater volume and less distortion. In addition, the Redmi Note 11 series is also teased to support Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio. The Redmi Note 11 series is likely to include three models – Redmi Note 11, Redmi Note 11 Pro, and Redmi Note 11 Pro+. Teasers suggest that the Redmi Note 11 Pro will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 920 SoC based on 6nm architecture featuring two Cortex-A78 cores and a Mali-G68 MC4 GPU. Leaks claim that the Redmi Note 11 may be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 810 SoC, while the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ is said to be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 AI SoC. All three Redmi Note phones are reported to come with 120Hz displays and include 5,000mAh batteries. Additionally, all three Redmi models are tipped to come with up to 256GB of onboard storage. The phones may also have a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection as standard and feature aluminium alloy-based middle frame. https://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/redmi-note-11-series-specifications-jbl-symmetry-audio-dual-speakers-teaser-launch-date-october-28-2589964
  6. We've been waiting a long time for Intel Alder Lake. Or at least it's felt like a long time because this is one Intel CPU generation we're super excited to try out, with its hybrid architecture and more up-to-date process node. Throughout that time we've had drips and drabs of information about the upcoming chips, soon to be Intel's 12th Gen, but today we get the motherlode. That's because Intel has released the full specification of the 12th Gen, Alder Lake chips, meaning we can finally put all those rumours to rest and talk with some real confidence. Not that it wasn't abundantly clear what was going on with Intel Alder Lake up until now, but now we've got it down in writing. Here's what to expect from the first wave of Alder Lake chips. You may have noticed a lack of TDP, or Thermal Design Power, in that table. That's because Intel is officially doing away with that for this generation, and is instead listing these chips with Processor Base Power and Maximum Turbo Power in Watts. In operation, you should expect to see the Processor Base Power when the processor is running closer to its standard stock frequency, and Maximum Turbo Power when the chip is boosting up to higher frequencies, as listed in the table above. Essentially, this appears a rebadge of the PL1 and PL2 specs we've seen before, which stand for the expected long-term power draw of a chip (PL1) and the short-term maximum power draw of a chip (PL2). Though Intel is also listing Maximum Turbo Power as "PL1 = PL2", which makes things a little more confusing. https://www.pcgamer.com/intel-alder-lake-12-gen-specs-release-date/
  7. Samsung Galaxy A03 India launch could be around the corner as its support pages are now live on Samsung's website in India and Russia. As usual, the support pages do not divulge any information about the upcoming smartphone apart from its model number. However, previous reports suggest that the Samsung Galaxy A03 may be powered by a Unisoc chipset paired with either 2GB or 3GB of RAM. The upcoming smartphone has also been tipped to pack a 5,000mAh battery. Samsung is yet to announce the budget-friendly smartphone. The support pages for the Samsung Galaxy A03 on Samsung's website in India and Russia were spotted by 91mobiles. These pages mention that the soon-to-be-launched Galaxy smartphone will have SM-A032F/DS as its model number. The DS suffix on the model designation hints at the dual-SIM capabilities of the smartphone. Apart from this, no other specifications of the Samsung Galaxy A03 were mentioned. Last week, Samsung Galaxy A03 was spotted on the Wi-Fi Alliance certification website with the model number SM-A032F/DS. The listing mentions that the upcoming smartphone will support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band with 802.11 b/g/n and Wi-Fi Direct. Furthermore, it mentions that the smartphone will run Android 11 out-of-the-box.Late last month, the Samsung Galaxy A03 was also spotted on the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Geekbench benchmark listings. The US FCC listing suggests that the smartphone will pack a 5,000mAh battery. It also mentions the network connectivity options for the upcoming Galaxy A03 and there is no mention of 5G connectivity. The Geekbench listing suggests that Samsung Galaxy A03 will be powered by a Unisoc processor paired with 2GB of RAM. The smartphone is also speculated to get a 3GB RAM variant, similar to its predecessor Galaxy A02. Furthermore, the upcoming Galaxy smartphone is also shown to run Android 11 with possibly a One UI 3.1 (Core) skin on top. https://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/samsung-a03-support-page-india-launch-russia-specifications-unisoc-processor-sm-a032f-ds-galaxy-2588659

The update focuses on three aspects - staying connected, finding focus with productivity, and privacy. A release date for iOS 15 was confirmed at the September 14 Apple event, where the company announced the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and other devices. Although the public beta went live in June, some features have since been delayed to iOS 15.1, such as SharePlay. If you're struggling to update to iOS 15, we've created a guide to help you update your iPhone to the newest software..com/forums/forum/828-software/?do=add Apple has brought new features to FaceTime in iOS 15, with a focus on making it easier to connect with family and friends, while improving the audio and visual quality. Spatial audio can be used with an iPhone XS and above, which means 3D audio gives the impression that your recipients are in the same room as you. Voice isolation now focuses on your voice only, and blocks out any other ambient noise. There's also Wide Spectrum, which focuses on you and the environment around you. There's also Grid View, which shows a group call, alongside Portrait Mode now able to be used, where the background is now blurred and focuses on you. There's also FaceTime links, which can generate a link to help plan a call, similar to how a Google Meet link works, and can be accessed by others who have an Android or Windows device. SharePlay is also new in iOS 15, where you can share music, watch TV shows and movies, alongside sharing your screen, so you can show a recipient how you use a certain app. You can also extend SharePlay to an AppleTV, which is helpful especially for a movie. This is also an API, so an app can work with this very soon. Supported services such as Disney+, Twitch, ESPN, TikTok and more are using SharePlay for iOS 15 and above. https://www.techradar.com/news/ios-15-update
  9. An unnamed Microsoft Azure customer has recently been targeted by a profound 2.4 Tbps DDoS attack. Thankfully the cloud service was able to fend off the onslaught and, despite its intensity, the customer's site remains unaffected. Azure caters for huge household names such as Ubisoft, eBay, Samsung, and Boeing... even the City of Taipei council relies on the cloud data service. As such, we're pretty glad to hear the attacks were unsuccessful. The charge came in the form of a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) flood, in which attackers target random host ports with IP packets in order to overwhelm their network and force sites offline. The intrusion—which originated from around 70,000 sources across the USA, Vietnam, and Taiwan, among other countries—lasted just 10 minutes. But each short volley took mere seconds to reach heights of 2.4 Tbps, 0.55 Tbps, and 1.7 Tbps (via The Verge). That puts it down as the most intense barrage Azure has ever had to deal with, at 140% higher than the company's 2020's DDoS attack. An announcement from Microsoft Azure notes: "Attacks of this size demonstrate the ability of bad actors to wreak havoc by flooding targets with gigantic traffic volumes trying to choke network capacity. "However, Azure’s DDoS protection platform, built on distributed DDoS detection and mitigation pipelines, can absorb tens of terabits of DDoS attacks." It makes a nice change to report on an attack that was sidestepped, rather than one which causes a mega-calamity. But as always this is a frightful reminder that cybercrime is not going away, or letting up any time soon. https://www.pcgamer.com/huge-microsoft-azure-ddos-udp-attack-resisted/

The tech giant is boosting one of its less-celebrated products to give enterprise users an easier way to search online. The tech giant is boosting one of its less-celebrated products to give enterprise users an easier way to search online. The update means that enterprise users will now get their historical searches as suggestions in the autosuggest pane on Bing and Microsoft Search in Bing, according to the official Microsoft 365 roadmap entry. Bing, for anyone who may need reminding, is Microsoft's own search engine, designed to rival the likes of Google in offering information to users across the globe. The new update should mean that enterprise users looking to quickly find files that they've searched for or opened before will no longer need to manually trawl through endless files and folders in search of the elusive location. The update is still currently in development, but Microsoft will doubtless be keen to get it out soon and help boost Bing engagement. The feature is set to be available to Microsoft Search users across the globe via the company's general availability route, meaning web, desktop and mobile users will all be able to utilize it upon release. Microsoft has kept its support for Bing despite the huge disadvantage versus Google, which has dominated the web search market for years. https://www.techradar.com/news/one-of-microsofts-most-hated-windows-11-tools-might-actually-be-getting-a-useful-upgrade
  11. AMD has announced a partnership with 343 Industries to support the development of Halo Infinite, and it's celebrating the news by showing off the new Radeon RX 6900 XT Halo Infinite Limited Edition graphics card. A card you can't buy, apparently. This comes on a frantic Halo news day since 343 Industries released a video highlighting all the PC-specific features coming to Halo Infinite when it launches, like custom key bindings, turning your PC into a LAN server even Discord connectivity across platforms. This collaboration shouldn't come as too big of a surprise since the AMD RDNA 2 architecture that powers the Radeon RX 6000 series is one and the same as the one found in the Xbox Series S and X. As the sole PC partner, the main focus of this team-up will be on "game title optimizations that benefit a vast range of hardware and device endpoints from ultra-high-end gaming powerhouses to older and cost-effective gaming machines as well as the entire Xbox family of consoles," according to AMD. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Halo Infinite Limited Edition is modeled after Master Chief's classic Mjolnir armor. There's even a small Cortana-blue light on the back of the card that's supposed to mimic the AI slot in the back of Chief's helmet. If you can't get enough of Halo branded merchandise, 343 also teamed with Razer to work on a line of PC peripherals that features a whole lot of green. So, how can you get one of these GPUs? Well, that's the thing. You can't buy them because AMD isn't selling them. AMD said in a blog post that they "will be working with the Halo team and other partners on multiple opportunities over the coming weeks to allow you to get your hands on one." As for performance, in our review of RX 6900 XT, we weren't too blown away by it compared to the RX 6800 XT. But hey, offered one as a prize, I wouldn't turn it down. I'd imagine the opportunities will come in contests and giveaways—basically, any way to keep the GPUs away from bots and resellers as we get closer to the Halo Infinite launch. In fact, Razer just announced they have 117 Halo GPUs to giveaway at RazerCON 2021. https://www.pcgamer.com/this-halo-infinite-themed-rx-6900-xt-gpu-is-so-limited-edition-you-cant-actually-buy-one/
