  1. Happy Birthday!
  2. https://www.techspot.com/news/92879-google-looks-bring-improved-connectivity-between-android-phones.html Having recently revealed plans to bring Android games to Windows PCs, Google is now showing some more love for Microsoft's OS by announcing Android features like Fast Pair and Nearby Share for Windows to enable better connectivity between the two platforms. The move comes as part of Google's wider plan to improve the Android ecosystem with smarter communication across devices, including Chromebooks and Wear OS smartwatches. Google had plenty to share regarding the present state and future ambitions for Android this week. In a blog post, Google highlighted existing and upcoming Android features, like instant setup and pairing between Chromebooks and Android phones, locking/unlocking devices with Wear OS smartwatches, and digital car key support for BMWs with Ultra-Wideband-enabled phones. The more interesting part of Google's announcement came at the end, where it revealed plans for deeper integration of Android devices with Windows PCs. Google has rarely shown love for Microsoft's OS, considering their rivalry, but the tide now seems to be turning. Not only are we getting Android games on Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs later this year, but also better Android-Windows integration with features like Fast Pair and Nearby Share for quickly setting up and pairing devices, Bluetooth accessories, syncing text messages, and sharing files. Plenty of third-party wired and wireless programs already bridge the Android-Windows connectivity gap. However, Google's implementation will likely be more seamless than existing solutions and could potentially cover a wide array of Android phones in the future. It might also push Microsoft to further improve the Your Phone app, that's currently built around owners of Samsung Galaxy and Surface devices. Interestingly, as was the case with Google's plan for Android gaming on Windows that ruled out a Microsoft partnership for the Play Games app, this productivity-focused integration of Android features also leaves out Microsoft from the action. Instead, Google says that it's working with Acer, HP and Intel to bring the experience to select Windows PCs later this year.

  3. https://www.techspot.com/news/92825-ease-2022-gpu-prices-no-longer-trending-upward.html We’ve all grown accustomed to the grim image of graphics cards selling for two to three times their MSRP. The most optimistic among industry leaders believe we still have six months before we’ll see prices trending downward, and the most current data suggests they’ll plateau at around 90 to 100 percent over MSRP until then. GPU pricing and availability was bleak in 2021, as we’ve noted in each one of our monthly reports. People who have been trying to upgrade their systems with one of Nvidia’s RTX 3000 series or AMD’s RX 6000 series graphics cards were faced with scalpers and cryptocurrency enthusiasts grabbing much of the available stock. Used GPU pricing has also been a nightmare, as it followed a similar trend as brand new GPUs. As we ease into 2022, there’s no sign of the situation improving in any significant way, but there are some reasons to keep hoping for it. For one, both AMD and Nvidia believe the supply of graphics cards will gradually improve this year. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is less optimistic in this regard, as Team Blue is readying its first wave of Alchemist GPUs which will intensify competition in the space but depend on limited foundry capacity just like current generation GPUs from the other two companies. According to German publication 3DCenter, GPU retail pricing seems to have plateaued. After reaching 91 to 92 percent above MSRP in December, it has now returned to November levels, with Nvidia’s RTX 3000 series cards sitting at 89 percent above MSRP. AMD’s RX 6000 series have seen a slightly higher dip to 85 percent above MSRP levels thanks to better availability. A Jon Peddie Research report last year highlighted a peculiar fact — graphics card shipments actually increased towards the end of 2021, which should have pushed prices down, at least in theory. Ethereum mining profitability has taken a small hit in December, but that doesn’t seem to have made any dent in the number of GPUs that are at work hashing transactions on the network. All in all, GPUs are still ridiculously expensive and will likely remain like that until Ethereum begins its major shift to a proof of stake model, which will render GPU mining obsolete or, at the very least, unprofitable. The protocol developers expect this to happen in June, but there’s always a possibility for further delays.

  5. https://www.techspot.com/news/92797-amd-prepping-radeon-super-resolution-fsr-alternative-nearly.html Like Nvidia's DLSS upscaling tech, AMD's FSR requires additional effort from developers to get implemented into a game. However, Team Red might be looking to change that by making the upscaling algorithm behind FSR available via the Radeon Software for any game that can run in exclusive fullscreen mode. Back in June, AMD launched its competitor to Nvidia’s DLSS tech in the form of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), an open source technology that works on both AMD and Nvidia hardware as well as Intel’s upcoming Alchemist GPUs. As our own Tim Schiesser noted in his preliminary analysis of FSR, AMD managed to come up with an upscaling solution that is good enough when playing at 4K and 1440p resolutions unless you’re using the more aggressive performance presets. It’s not capable of matching Nvidia’s DLSS 2.0 or later revisions in reproducing fine details and it suffers from more shimmering and image artifacts when in motion, but it does offer a similar increase in performance. Half a year later, adoption is looking pretty strong with 70 current and upcoming games offering support for Team Red’s non-AI upscaling tech. However, a VideoCardz report says the company is also working on a different variant of FSR that is designed to work in “nearly all games.” If true, this is likely being built as a response to Nvidia’s Image Scaling tool that has recently been updated to provide FSR-like image upscaling and sharpening capabilities via the Nvidia control panel. There is a catch, however — in order to use AMD’s upcoming Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) feature, you’ll need to use an RX 5000 series or newer GPU and run your game in exclusive full-screen mode. Unlike FSR, Radeon Super Resolution won’t require developers to implement it as part of the rendering pipeline of their games, which means you won’t have to wait before you can use it in your favorite titles. The trade-off is that FSR leaves UI and in-game HUD elements at native resolution, while the new solution will just apply the upscaling algorithm to the entire video output. As a result, the image will be softer than with FSR but some people might be willing to accept that on a lower-end graphics card like the Radeon RX 5500 XT. As usual, take this with a pinch of salt. Still, AMD is expected to announce RSR at CES 2022 alongside the Radeon RX 6500 XT and the Radeon RX 6400, so hopefully we’ll learn more soon.
  6. https://www.techspot.com/news/92878-hp-omen-45l-case-puts-radiator-outside.html It's starting to look as if 2022 is the year of the PC case at CES. Following reveals of unique designs by several companies, HP has joined the party with the Omen 45L ATX, which features an Omen Cryo Chamber that stores the system’s radiator outside of the main case. The Omen 45L is the latest in HP’s well-reviewed Omen desktop line. In addition to being larger than the previous Omen 40L, the new PC comes with a patented Omen Cryo Chamber. It’s a chamber placed outside of the main interior section that can house all-in-one liquid coolers measuring up to 360mm in length. The theory behind the Cryo Chamber is that by keeping the radiator on the outside of the case, it can suck in cooler ambient air than if it were on the inside. The chamber design also means that the chassis can be carried around by the handle it creates. HP claims that the Cryo Chamber can lower CPU temperatures by 6 degrees Celsius compared to standard designs. There’s also an intake on the front of the case so the three 140mm RGB fans can pull in fresh air. Another benefit of the Omen 45L is that it has lockable front and side panels that can be easily removed without tools. HP is now selling the case on its website with a complete system packed inside—up to an Intel Core i9-12900K, RTX 3090, 64GB of DDR4 RAM, 2TB NVMe SSD—starting at $1,999. There are also AMD-powered options starting at $2,378.99 that can be specced up to a Ryzen 9 5900X. It's worth noting that all the components come from named brands. The good news for those who prefer to build their own PCs is that the Omen 45L case will soon be available to purchase by itself. No price was given but expect it to be somewhere between the $199 Hyte Y60, which offers panoramic views of the interior hardware, and the $250 Kinetic Series with its 18 motorized triangular vents.
