https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-57775800 People returning to England from abroad could face peak-time airport queues of up to six hours when travel measures are eased, a union has warned. Fully jabbed UK citizens coming back from amber list countries will no longer need to quarantine from 19 July. The Immigration Service Union said the "sheer number" of passengers arriving and a shortage of Border Force officers would slow down checks. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps also admitted travel could be "disrupted". But he added that airports, airlines and train and ferry companies were developing apps to cut queues. On Thursday, the government announced that fully vaccinated UK residents returning to England from amber list travel destinations - including po[CENSORED]r holiday countries such as Spain, France, Italy and the US - would no longer have to quarantine from Monday 19 July. But they will still have to present three documents in addition to passports: a passenger locator form, monitoring possible contact with people who have coronavirus proof of a recent negative Covid test proof of being fully vaccinated at least 14 days previously Northern Ireland plans to adopt the same changes from 26 July, while both Scotland and Wales have said they will consider whether to do the same. Airlines and travel agents have reported a surge in bookings for overseas holidays since England's new rules were announced. But Lucy Moreton, the Immigration Service Union's professional officer, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the government needed to recruit more Border Force workers to cope with the increased demand. Ordinary passport checks took two to four minutes per person, she said, adding that those involving the Covid-related documents increased this to eight to 12 minutes. "At the moment we are seeing peak-time queues somewhere in the one-to-two-hour mark, where we have got several aircraft that arrive at the same time," Ms Moreton added. She told the BBC News website that larger passenger numbers would further slow checks and create airport queues "three times longer" than at present. In response, Mr Shapps admitted travel would "be more disrupted than it was back in 2019", but the issue was "going to be on the check-in side rather than the border side" at Heathrow and elsewhere. Airlines and train and ferry companies were "looking at digitising a lot of that", he said, adding: "That could help, but undeniably [travel] is more disrupted than in years gone by."

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-57789451 The Queen and Boris Johnson have led messages of support to the England team ahead of the Euro 2020 final. The monarch recalled presenting the World Cup trophy to Bobby Moore in 1966 as she praised the current team's "spirit, commitment and pride with which you have conducted yourselves". And in a letter to the squad, the prime minister said they had "lifted the spirits of the whole country". The Duke of Cambridge said he "can't really believe this is happening". Prince William, who is president of the English Football Association, urged the squad to "bring it home" and said the team had already displayed "the very best of England". Gareth Southgate's team play Italy at Wembley on Sunday at 20:00 BST. 'A moment we feared would never happen' The Queen's message hailed the "spirit, commitment and pride" of the England players. She wrote: "Fifty-five years ago I was fortunate to present the World Cup to Bobby Moore and saw what it meant to the players, management and support staff to reach and win the final of a major international football tournament. "I want to send my congratulations and that of my family to you all on reaching the final of the European Championships, and send my good wishes for tomorrow with the hope that history will record not only your success but also the spirit, commitment and pride with which you have conducted yourselves." In his letter, Mr Johnson told the team they had "already made history" by taking England into the final of a major international competition for the first time in 55 years. "You have forged a band of brothers whose energy and tenacity and teamwork - and sheer flair - seem to shine in everything you do," he said. "You have lifted the spirits of the whole country, and tomorrow we know you can lift that trophy too. "We are not just hoping or praying. We believe in you, Gareth, and your incredible squad. "On behalf of the entire nation, good luck, have a great game - and bring it home!"

https://www.autonews.com/automakers-suppliers/ford-amends-bylaws-adopt-gender-neutral-language Ford Motor Co. on Friday said it amended its bylaws to adopt gender-neutral language in an effort to build a more inclusive workplace. The automaker said it would use the title "chair" in place of "chairman." This comes amid fierce debates over what it means to be a man or a woman, and how language and institutions need to be more inclusive. Earlier this year, White House added gender-neutral pronouns that people could select when contacting the U.S. government, while professional networking site LinkedIn announced plans to let users add their preferred gender pronouns to accounts in certain countries.

While some signs from Intel pointed to compatibility between platforms for Intel's upcoming Alder Lake and Raptor Lake processors, the evidence is now overwhelming. Based on a document filed with the industry standards committee SATA-IO, Intel's upcoming 600-series chipsets will support both Alder Lake and Raptor Lake processors. Last month an Intel contractor submitted compatibility testing results for the company's upcoming "Alder-Raptor Lake PCH-S SATA Controller" to SATA-IO (via @Komachi_Ensaka), an organization that oversees and supports the SATA specification. The document covers Intel's Platform Controller Hubs (PCHs) featuring 7AB0, 7ACB, 7A30, and 7A4B device IDs, which are probably the company's 600-series chipsets for desktops and laptops. The controller's name confirms that Alder Lake and Raptor Lake CPUs can use the same chipsets, in this case, Intel's 600-series PCHs. Meanwhile, compatibility with a chipset does not automatically mean drop-in compatibility of any Raptor Lake CPU with any Intel 600-series motherboard, as there are other considerations. Intel's Alder Lake is the company's first hybrid processor for mainstream PCs. The CPUs will come in an LGA1700 packaging and integrate up to eight high-performance Golden Cove cores and up to eight energy-efficient Gracemont cores. The chips will also support DDR5 memory and a PCIe 5.0 interface. Intel's codenamed Raptor Lake processors will succeed Alder Lake sometime in 2022 and will feature higher performance. Meanwhile, the exact differences between Alder Lake and Raptor Lake platforms are unknown. An unconfirmed rumor has it that Intel's 600-series chipsets themselves will not bring PCIe 5.0 connectivity, but will continue to support PCIe 4.0. Yet Since Alder Lake CPU will support PCIe 5.0, the platform will bring this technology to the market. So if the rumor about the lack of PCIe 5.0 support by Intel's 600-series chipsets is correct, then support for PCIe 5.0 would be a natural improvement for Raptor Lake's 700-series chipsets. But of course, that's speculation. Before shipping any platform or product, Intel has to ensure its compatibility and/or compliance with various industry standards and fill in applicable documents with appropriate standard setting bodies. SATA-IO is one such organization. Typically, such groups publish information about compatibility and compliance test results on their websites to enable makers of hardware to ensure the compatibility of their products with products manufactured by other companies. As a result, it's inevitable that organizations like SATA-IO, PCI-SIG, and USB-IO reveal details about unreleased products.

https://www.autonews.com/regulation-safety/gm-recalls-410000-sierras-silverados-over-airbag-inflator-rupture-risk General Motors is recalling 410,019 pickup trucks from the 2015 and 2016 model years because the roof-rail airbag inflator end cap in them could detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall could rupture. According to a safety recall report filed with NHTSA, corrosion caused by moisture introduced during the supplier manufacturing process could occur inside the inflator vessel. If the end cap separates from the roof-rail airbag inflator or a sidewall rupture occurs, compressed gas could escape and the end cap could be propelled into the vehicle, potentially injuring the driver or passengers. GM says the supplier at the time of assembly was Key Safety Systems, now known as Joyson Safety Systems. The recall covers a range of pickup models: the 2015-16 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500; and the 2015-16 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500. GM reports roof-rail airbag inflators ruptured in three unoccupied 2015 Silverado vehicles in mid-June 2021. In all three cases, the steel inflator-body sidewall "split open, suddenly releasing the gas stored inside the chamber." GM estimates it will notify owners by mail Aug. 16. The automaker says dealers will replace the left- and right-side roof-rail airbag modules free of charge. Owners will be getting a second notice when a remedy is available, GM said. It notified dealers July 1. A GM spokesman told Automotive News it is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the recall.

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-57666610 The downward spiral in Stephen's life began when his wife of 16 years left. The father-of-four admits he could not cope. There were twists of mental anguish, then financial ones. The 49-year-old says he was forcibly removed from his home after falling behind on rent and bills. When he hit rock bottom, he was living alone in a two-man tent on the Trans Pennine Trail and spending time in a bus station to stay warm. He relied on churches, charities, and good samaritans for food. Now, he is dragging himself back up from those depths. He was found somewhere more suitable to live during the pandemic, and has recently applied for permanent council tenancy. There has been one big barrier to living independently in adequate accommodation - he had no bank account. He had no documents to enable him to open an account - no paperwork or identification of any kind. He was helped by a link between the council and HSBC. For the last 18 months, the High Street bank has provided access to a basic bank account - which does not allow credit - to people like Stephen without a photo ID or proof of their address. Instead, a charity or council caseworker verifies their identity. A total of 1,144 accounts have been opened under the scheme. Maxine Pritchard, head of financial inclusion at HSBC UK, says that the pandemic has made the problem of homelessness even more acute. "Without a bank account it's extremely difficult to claim benefits, rent accommodation or receive wages, which means people who are homeless can become trapped in their current situation. That just simply isn't fair," says Ms Pritchard. Stephen says it is making a difference to his life. "It means so much for me," he says. "It helps to build the life skills I've lost over time." He says that being able to set up a direct debit is vital for getting on top of bills. After relying on the generosity of others, he can now manage the basics such as food shopping in the supermarket. This is something, he says, which made him anxious at first, but is another step towards a better life. The scheme is not the only one supporting homeless people in setting up bank accounts. Last month, the BBC reported on a small pilot project led by social enterprise Proxy Address in conjunction with Lewisham Council. It is giving 20 homeless people access to a virtual address they can use to apply for services. If all goes to plan, the hope is that the scheme will be extended. Hundreds of others have been assisted by the Big Issue Group, partly in order to process contactless payments when selling the magazine. Many have been given Zettle card readers to accept contactless payments from shoppers on the street who increasingly find themselves with only a card, rather than coins, in their wallet. One of those to use the card reader, and who benefitted from a new bank account, is Dave. The 59-year-old, who sells the Big Issue in London, says: "It definitely helped my sales. And because of the pandemic, card sales increased a lot. "I call it Covid reasons - people shop less regular, they shop online, or are just afraid to come out. You get a lot of people who don't engage any more, withdraw into themselves." Beth Thomas, from The Big Issue, says the pandemic has accelerated its programme of ensuring vendors can accept cards as well as cash. About 30% of Big Issue sellers are now cashless. As more and more of them gain access to money in a bank account, it may see them take one of many steps needed towards a more hopeful future.

Link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-57762246 Haiti's President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated by armed assailants who stormed his private residence in the capital, Port-au-Prince, on 7 July. Here is what we know so far. A group of gunmen broke into the home of President Moïse in the Pelerin neighbourhood at 01:00 local time (05:00 GMT) on Wednesday 7 July. They shot the president 12 times. Mr Moïse was found lying on his back, his shirt soaked in blood, with his left eye gouged out, a magistrate said. He had bullet wounds to his forehead, and several to his torso. He died at the scene. The First Lady, Martine Moïse, was also shot but survived. She has been airlifted to Florida, in the US, and is said to be in a stable condition. The couple's adult daughter, Jomarlie Moïse, hid in her brother's bedroom and was unhurt. She and her two brothers are in "safe locations", officials said. Video footage, which has not been independently verified but which is thought to have been taken as the assailants entered the property, shows armed men dressed in black arriving in white SUVs. A man appears to have been forced to lie face down in the street while another man can be heard shouting in English over loudspeaker "DEA [US Drug Enforcement Administration} operation, everybody stay down!" Haiti's ambassador to the US, Bocchit Edmond, said that while the attackers had disguised themselves as US drug agents, he believed there was "no way" they really were US agents. Officials say that the ground between the property's gatehouse and the residence was littered with cartridge cases, indicating that multiple shots were fired. The gunmen tied up two members of the domestic staff, while continuing to shout "DEA operation". They ransacked Mr Moïse's office and took a cheque book in the couple's names as well as the servers that held the surveillance camera footage from the residence. The two top security officials in charge of Mr Moïse's safety are under investigation and have been summoned to appear at hearings scheduled for 13 and 14 July. Haiti's police chief announced some 24 hours after Mr Moïse's assassination that a fierce gun battle was under way in the Pelerin neighbourhood. "We blocked [the suspects] en route as they left the scene of the crime. Since then, we have been battling them" Chief Léon Charles said without specifying an exact timeline. The police chief also said officers had managed to free three policeman who had been taken hostage by the gunmen. He originally said four suspects had been killed in the gun battle, but that number has since been revised down to three. It has emerged that 11 of the suspects fled to Taiwan's diplomatic compound in Port-au-Prince. Taiwanese officials said they were informed by Haitian police that the suspects were hiding in the compound early on 8 July, more than 24 hours after the attack. Taiwan allowed the police access and all 11 suspects hiding within were arrested "without problems". Two suspects who were hiding in a ravine were caught by civilians who had joined in the search. The body of one alleged gunman was found on the roof of a home, where he bled to death while hiding. Two more suspects were found dead very close to the president's residence.
