Warnings flashing, Democrats in Congress laid plans for swift impeachment of President Donald Trump, demanding decisive, immediate action to ensure an “unhinged” commander in chief can’t add to the damage they say he’s inflicted or even ignite nuclear war in his final days in office. As the country comes to terms with the violent siege of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters that left five dead, the crisis that appears to be among the final acts of his presidency is deepening like few other periods in the nation’s history. With less than two weeks until he’s gone, Democrats want him out — now — and he has few defenders speaking up for him in his own Republican party. “We must take action,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared Friday on a private conference call with Democrats. And one prominent Republican, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, told the Anchorage Daily News that Trump simply “needs to get out.” The final days of Trump’s presidency are spinning toward a chaotic end as he holes up at the White House, abandoned by many aides, top Republicans and Cabinet members. After refusing to concede defeat in the November election, he has now promised a smooth transfer of power when Democratic President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in on Jan. 20. But even so, he says he will not attend the inauguration – the first such presidential snub since just after the Civil War. In Congress, where many have watched and reeled as the president spent four years breaking norms and testing the nation’s guardrails of democracy, Democrats are unwilling to take further chances with only a few days left in his term. The mayhem that erupted Wednesday at the Capitol stunned the world and threatened the traditional peaceful transfer of power. Pelosi said she had spoken to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley “to discuss available precautions for preventing an unstable president from initiating military hostilities or accessing the launch codes” for nuclear war. She said Milley assured her longstanding safeguards are in place. The president has sole authority to order the launch of a nuclear weapon, but a military commander could refuse the order if it were determined to be illegal. Trump has not publicly made such threats, but officials warn of grave danger if the president is left unchecked. “This unhinged president could not be more dangerous,” Pelosi said of the current situation. Biden, meanwhile, said he is focused on his job as he prepares to take office. Asked about impeachment, he said, “That’s a decision for the Congress to make.” The Democrats are considering lightning-quick action. A draft of their Articles of Impeachment accuses Trump of abuse of power, saying he “willfully made statements that encouraged — and foreseeably resulted in — imminent lawless action at the Capitol,” according to a person familiar with the details who was granted anonymity to discuss them. The articles are expected to be introduced on Monday, with a House vote as soon as Wednesday. If Trump were to be impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate, he might also be prevented from running again for the presidency in 2024 or ever holding public office again. He would be only the president twice impeached. A person on the call said Pelosi also discussed other ways Trump might be forced to resign. Senators from a bipartisan group convened their own call to consider options for congressional action, according to an aide granted anonymity to reveal the private discussions. Not helpful, the White House argued. Trump spokesman Judd Deere said, “A politically motivated impeachment against a President with 12 days remaining in his term will only serve to further divide our great country.” Trump was tweeting again Friday, his Twitter account reinstated after a brief ban, and he reverted to an aggressive statement that his supporters must not be “disrespected” after he had sent out a calmer Thursday video decrying the violence. Toward evening, Twitter said it was permanently suspending him from its platform, citing “risk of further incitement of violence.” The soonest the Senate could begin an impeachment trial under the current calendar would be Jan. 20, Inauguration Day. Conviction in the Republican Senate at this late date would seem unlikely, though in a sign of Trump’s shattering of the party many Republicans were silent on the issue. One Trump ally, Republican Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, did speak up, saying as the White House did that “impeaching the President with just 12 days left in his term will only divide our country more”. McCarthy said he has reached out to Biden and plans to speak with the Democratic president-elect about working together to “lower the temperature.” But Murkowski said she wants Trump to resign now, not wait for Biden’s swearing in on Jan. 20. “I want him out,” she said in a telephone interview with the Anchorage newspaper. Another leading Republican critic of Trump, Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska, said he would “definitely consider” impeachment. Strong criticism of Trump, who urged the protesters to march to the Capitol, continued unabated. “Every day that he remains in office, he is a danger to the Republic,” said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif. Schiff, who led Trump’s impeachment in 2019, said in a statement that Trump “lit the fuse which exploded on Wednesday at the Capitol.” Sen. Bernie Sanders, the independent from Vermont, tweeted that some people ask, why impeach a president who has only a few days left in office? “The answer: Precedent. It must be made clear that no president, now or in the future, can lead an insurrection against the U.S. government,” Sanders said. Pelosi and Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer both had private calls with Biden late Friday. They have called on Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to force Trump from office. It’s a process for removing the president and installing the vice president to take over. Pelosi said later that option remains on the table. But action by Pence or the Cabinet now appears unlikely, especially after two top officials, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao suddenly resigned in the aftermath of the violence and would no longer be in the Cabinet to make such a case. Trump had encouraged loyalists at a rally Wednesday at the White House to march on the Capitol where Congress was certifying the Electoral College tally of Biden’s election. The House impeached Trump in 2019, but the Republican-led Senate acquitted him in early 2020.

After the year that was 2020, it's little wonder people are so keen to kickstart 2021 on a positive note, things can only get better eh? But despite maybe wanting to start the year with great intentions, it can sometimes be hard to find that motivation. We caught up with Personal Development Coach Annette Kelly, who founded the brand Little Penny Thoughts, an online community which started out as a simple positive wellness page, but has now grown into a major brand helping people through their toughest days and weeks. The Co Tyrone native has spoken openly about her own battle with anxiety and depression which set her on this journey, and now Annette uses her own experiences to guide others on their path to a positive and happy life. For those out there who may be struggling right now, regardless of the fact that we have started a new year, Annette, a former teacher, believes the healing has to start from within. "For anyone out there who is struggling right now, my number one tip is just to be so gentle with yourself because you are already being incredibly hard on yourself. Sometimes a lot of depression and anxiety can stem from within, in our own thoughts and feelings about ourselves so just be gentle with yourself and slowly but surely you will be able to overcome your current obstacles but it does take time. "Even though you may feel at present that it won't get better, it can and it will with the right support and help." She continued: "My whole concept is wellness from within, maybe years ago I would have searched for outward things to try and make me happy but when I did the internal work for me my game changer in life was Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), it is something that I would highly recommend to people to research and you can get referred through your GP." "Knowing that you deserve to be happy and knowing that you deserve to live a fruitful life and you don't deserve to be crippled by your thoughts. Because mental health is so broad some people want to just get out of a rut while others are seriously suffering at the hands of their mental health and my overriding message to people is don't suffer in silence." "I'm still very keen to break the stigma around mental health which is why I'm so keen to talk about my own mental health journey to maybe empower others to speak about theirs or to seek support. Just normalise the conversation around mental health, a lot of people talk about getting their body fit for the New Year, but also think about getting your mind fit."Asked what her top tips to starting 2021 on the right note, Annette had this simple advice. "As well as CBT, self care was also a big thing for me, learning to say no, and also pursuing my passion and my career and eliminating that self doubt that can sometimes hold you back. "I do believe in the mantra talking one day at a time, especially in uncertain times because it is all we can do, you get through one day and then it's on to the next. If you focus on the day at hand it definitely can lead to less anxiety in my opinion. "One of my favourite quotes or sayings is, 'pressure is for tyres' and it's true, eliminate the pressure that you need to be doing this or achieving that. I am all about goal setting and having ambition but what I am not about is people putting serious pressure on themselves to achieve certain things." The 31-year-old also believes the world of social media can have a huge positive but also negative affect on our lives if we let it. "The whole online world as well plays a big part, people think they have to keep up with the Jones' and I believe comparison is the thief of joy, so try and not compare and just focus on your own wee grass. "It's so unhealthy and obviously social media is a huge part of my work but I have deleted lots of the apps apart from Instagram so I have to access the others on my desktop and it has really helped me. It's just trying to reduce my screen time as well, just getting the balance between screen time and real life. I do believe the best moments in your life happen beyond the end of your phone. "Be aware of who you're following online as well, check your news feeds and ensure you're following accounts and people who uplift and inspire you instead of maybe triggering you.

Finnish travellers have struggled to get certificates proving their Covid-negative status on time and in the correct language, but now the Helsinki University hospital district (HUS) is looking at ways to improve the system. Up to now, HUS has not provided an official document unless people ask for it specifically — patients get their test results electronically. That takes time, which can push the certificate validity out of the 72 hours required by airlines and many countries. Last week passengers were pulled from a flight to Amsterdam when it became clear their Covid documentation was not good enough for the Dutch authorities. Finnish-language certificates and text messages are not enough to enter the Netherlands. HUS says it is now looking at automating the system to enable it to provide certificates in other languages. "Now you get the results in different languages, but there are no templates for the certificates," said HUS head of diagnostics, Lasse Lehtonen, who says English will be one of the first options offered. Other issues also need to be resolved when providing legal documentation like this. "The person being tested must be able to prove their identity," said Lehtonen. "Some countries demand a passport number. At the moment, when a person comes for a test, they are asked their name and social security number, but checks aren't as strict as they should be if you're doing this for an official document." Finnair says that passengers are themselves responsible for obtaining all the correct documents. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs recommends that travellers secure a certificate in English, rather than Finnish. The ministry also states that travellers should be absolutely certain their journey is necessary, and check the up-to-date advice on entry requirements for their destination before they make the trip.

Luxury vehicles worth up to £150,000 were today spotted in a Cornish town po[CENSORED]r with wealthy second home owners - but their numberplates reveal they were registered hundreds of miles away. Motors including a £40,000 BMW X3 and a £30,000 Land Rover Discovery Sport were also seen in car parks in the village of Rock, which is home to celebrities including chef Gordon Ramsay and comedian Harry Enfield. Numberplate records revealed the vehicles pictured were registered up to 400 miles away in places like London, East Anglia and Shrewsbury, suggesting they could be owned by motorists not from the area. Among the most expensive motors photographed in the coastal fishing village was a Bentley Bentayga V8 Auto costing upwards of £146,700 new and had been registered in Norwich in September 2019. The location of numberplate registration does not necessarily mean the car's owner is from the same area, and some of the vehicles could also be leased from companies based outside the region. However the range of locations seen on vehicles in Rock today suggest that a number of motorists there are not from Cornwall. It came as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall said high-profile figures have the chance to positively influence the nation by not travelling to the South West after the third national lockdown began. Alison Hernandez said: 'We know Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are absolutely beautiful and it's totally understandable that people would want to spend time here. 'However, at a time when stopping the spread of this terrible virus is more important than ever, I must urge people not to make unnecessary journeys to the region. I would particularly like to appeal to celebrities and high-profile social media stars. 'By not conducting unnecessary trips to the region, you will be setting a fantastic example to the wider public and, in doing so, encouraging more people to stick to the rules. 'I would urge you to lead by example and together we will come through this. There will, of course, come a time when Devon and Cornwall can welcome back visitors with open arms. 'And while that time isn't now, I would urge you all to #ComeBackLater. This new strain of Covid-19 is spreading much faster and we must do everything we can to protect our residents and the NHS.' There have been cases of people journeying to the region to visit second homes, including one recent high profile incident which resulted in officers turning away five people from tier four areas on the Isles of Scilly. Princes William and Harry, actor Hugh Grant and producer Jemima Khan have been previously known to visit the exclusive resort of Rock which has been dubbed 'Britain's St Tropez' and the 'Kensington of Cornwall'. Ramsay was criticised during spring last year for moving to a £4.4million second home at Trebetherick in Cornwall in mid-March, shortly before the coronavirus crisis prompted the first nationwide lockdown. The Government has said people must not stay away overnight during the latest lockdown without a reasonable excuse, adding that visits to second homes are banned. Holidays in the UK and abroad are also not allowed, including staying in a second home or caravan. People must also not stay overnight with anyone they do not live with unless they are in a support bubble. Some exceptions do apply such as if people are unable to return to their main residence, need accommodation while moving house or for work, or need accommodation to attend a funeral. Guest accommodation providers such as hotels, B&Bs and caravan parks may remain open for the specific reasons set out in law, including where guests need accommodation while moving house. This afternoon in London, Boris Johnson warned it would take time to ease lockdown restrictions in England which could be in place until the end of March. The Prime Minister said there was 'no choice' but to issue the stay-at-home order and close schools given the spread of coronavirus, particularly the more infectious new variant. Addressing MPs after the recall of the Commons from its Christmas break, Mr Johnson said there was now a race between the spread of the virus and the delivery of vaccines to the most vulnerable.

When José was waiting for the birth of his second child, Gonzalo, a colleague from the lab he works in stopped him in the corridor to congratulate him on the impending arrival. “Four weeks of vacation,” he said. “You’re so lucky!” That another man, who was also a father, should refer to the first month of parenthood as a holiday, struck José, 39, as funny. He is now looking forward to his third child with his partner, Raquel, also 39. Although they already know all about the sleepless nights and dirty diapers, at least they are now entitled to 16 weeks of leave each. As of January 1, 2021, paternity leave and maternity leave will be the same in Spain. The 16 weeks are 100% paid by the state and non-transferable, which means that if one parent decides not to take the time off, the other parent cannot take advantage of it. Both these factors are fundamental to encouraging fathers to take leave while placing Spain at the forefront of paternity rights. For sociologist Constanza Tobío, it draws a line under the debate. “It conveys the message that fathers have the right and obligation to be a carer, under exactly the same conditions and on the same terms as women,” she says. After their third child is born in June, Raquel and José, who live in Màlaga, plan to stagger the leave. After the first six weeks, which the law requires be taken together, one will return to work, while the other cares for the child, then vice versa until the baby can be left in a nursery. However, they understand that first-time parents prefer to spend all 16 weeks together in order to cope with the abrupt change to their lives that a baby inevitably brings. Paloma del Río and Víctor Vázquez, both 35, are expecting their first child at the end of January and like to remind people at the advertising agency where they work how much time they will be taking off so that it doesn’t take anyone by surprise. “I’m amazed [the new measure] has taken this long,” says Paloma. “But at least it’s here now. I only hope it doesn’t get pulled. Even as it is, I still think both of us need more time.” Paloma is considering taking a month-long leave of absence on top of the 16 weeks but says it’s a case of waiting and seeing how things pan out. “If the coronavirus pandemic carries on like this, the grandparents will not be able to give us a hand and we do not know if we will continue to work from home.” Of course, José feels lucky. When his first daughter Alba was born five years ago, he found it hard to leave Raquel alone just two weeks later, particularly as she was still weak after the birth. “I was overwhelmed,” he says. “I wanted to stay and share that experience.” The length of José’s leave has extended with each child, increasing progressively since 2017. But the fact that women are able to leave their jobs for longer is detrimental to them professionally as it makes them seem less committed to their jobs, according to Tobío. Raquel’s contract was terminated just before she became pregnant with Gonzalo, so she was not able to reenter the labor market until Gonzalo began nursery school. Now, the fact both parents have the same amount of leave means employers are less likely to be swayed by a candidate’s gender when it comes to hiring. The new entitlement for fathers puts Spain ahead of the rest of Europe, including Nordic countries such as Iceland and Sweden, where paternity leave is 12 weeks and paid at 80% – the total length of leave between both parents does, however, exceed the amount available to Spanish parents, as it usually includes several weeks that are interchangeable between mother and father. “Leave is longer in northern Europe but since it is transferable, it is usually used by women, which is a trap in the end,” says María Pazos, from the Platform for Equal and Non-transferable Birth and Adoption Leave (PPiiNA). Although the PPiiNA pushed for the new measure, it still criticizes several aspects of it, such as the fact that the first six weeks have to be taken simultaneously, and that the remaining 10 weeks will be taken, “on a full-time or part-time basis, subject to agreement” with the fathers’ employers, which means the right of fathers to decide is not guaranteed. There are other issues, such as the World Health Organization’s recommendation for women to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months, which is challenging if they are only entitled to four months of maternity leave. Sources at the Equality Ministry acknowledge that despite the positive aspects of the new policy, it has not yet been possible to guarantee that raising a family is not detrimental to women professionally. “We need a new formula for care, bringing up children and work,” says a spokesman. “Despite the fact that paternity leave is proving positive among men, women continue to be the ones who most often reduce their working hours for care purposes.” This applies to the care of both children and elderly dependents. Patricia Merino, author of the book Maternity, Equality and Fraternity, points out that 16 weeks is one of the shortest maternity leaves in the EU while fathers will have one of the longest and best paid leaves on the continent. She believes that this does not solve any of the existing conflicts between being a mother and pursuing a profession. “Women are now going to remain unprotected after their leave,” she says. “Those who have greater financial means will be able to take extra leave, while the rest will have to choose between leaving the labor market to care for their child or coming back to it.” Sociologist Constanza Tobío also focuses on other short-term leave entitlements where Spain is lagging behind other EU countries. According to Spanish labor law, parents can take time off for a serious illness, but not for a minor illness that would prevent the child from going to school, such as a tummy bug. The sociologist considers that these entitlements should be distributed equally between the genders. This would avoid a return to the default position of mothers being the ones to take the time off and giving up positions of responsibility in the workplace. One possibility would be to create an hour bank of, for example, 25 hours for mothers and another 25 for fathers. Sociologist Teresa Jurado is concerned that after those six mandatory joint weeks of leave, pressure may be put on men by their employers either to forego the rest of their paternity leave or to take it part time. This possibility could perpetuate the stereotype of the mother as the carer. However, she admits that it is an opportunity for men to take equal responsibility for the care of the child, rather than to act as the mother’s assistant. “To make this work, men must assert their rights in the company,” says Jurado. She also says that there is a shift in upcoming generations. For example, Paloma says that when her mother had her, her father slept in another room so he could get some rest before work. “The difference is huge,” she says. “Now we share chores 50/50. I am struck by the fact that a man is considered a super dad simply because he is taking care of his child just as the mother does.” Víctor also finds it unfair that his father could only get a few hours off work to meet him in the hospital when he was born. But you don’t have to go back further than 10 years to find similar situations. Víctor’s older sisters keep telling him how lucky he is. They had to manage on their own because their partners had no leave at all. “I would be very upset if I missed that stage,” he says. “Not only am I excited about it, I think it’s also my duty.” But the couple are under no illusion about how much having a baby is about to change their lives. “People keep doing it so there must be something good about it,” they joke.

An electric pick-up truck with a ‘radical’ design could be coming from Fisker, after the company’s founder shared a rendering on Twitter. Henrik Fisker tweeted: “Ok, yes, next vehicle might be a lifestyle pick up truck! But not just any truck! “We want to create the lightest, most efficient EV pick up in the world! Making it the most sustainable! Image is just a teaser! Not the final: final will be way more radical!” The truck would follow on from the Ocean electric SUV, which is due to go on sale in 2022. Although the render is not the final production model, it does indicate the pick-up will continue Fisker’s typically angular design, with sharp creases in the bodywork and narrow LED lights. In response to other Twitter users, Fisker said the truck would cost less than $39,000 (£28,700) and come with four-wheel-drive as standard. He told another user that the low suspension was simply for the image and that the company would ‘spend all of 2021 calibrating, testing and fine tuning’. The market for electric pick-up trucks appears to be a hot topic for car makers, with the most prominent being the Tesla Cybertruck. However, startup car maker Rivian has a model much closer to production, with the R1T expected to go on sale this year.

Applying to public charter schools in Buffalo just got easier for a lot of families. Much like applying to colleges, the Buffalo Charter School system now has it's own common application. Families no longer have to submit applications to each individual school. Effective immediately, they can submit on application that most Buffalo charter schools accept. The application launched December 1, 2020, is free and offered in both English and Spanish. You can visit Enroll Buffalo Charters to fill it out before this year's application closes on April 1. "The Association is proud to have facilitated this collaborative effort between Buffalo’s great public charter schools,” said Yomika S. Bennett, Executive Director of the New York Charter Schools Association. “It is our hope that this platform increases access to and knowledge of the area’s charter schools and simplifies the application process for families.” Participating and partnered schools include: Buffalo Academy of Science #1 Buffalo Academy of Science #2 Buffalo Collegiate Charter School Buffalo Commons Charter School Buffalo Creek Academy Buffalo United Charter School Charter School of Inquiry Elmwood Village Charter School-Days Park Elmwood Village Charter School-Hertel Enterprise Charter School King Center Charter School Health Sciences Charter School Persistence Preparatory Academy Charter School Primary Hall South Buffalo Charter School Tapestry Charter School West Buffalo Charter School Westminster Community Charter School

The world's wealthiest 1% account for more than twice the combined carbon emissions of the poorest 50%, according to the UN. Their emissions gap report finds that the richest will need to rapidly cut their CO2 footprints to avoid dangerous warming this century. The study finds that the global Covid-19 shutdown will have little long term impact on the climate. But a strong, green recovery could limit the rise in temperatures to 2C. Climate change threatens 'most Alps glaciers' Beer and crisps used to help tackle climate change Snowy UK winters could become thing of the past The study, compiled by the UN Environment Programme (Unep), underlines the chasm between the level of emissions consistent with keeping temperatures down and what's happening in the real world. It predicts that while carbon production will have tumbled by around 7% this year because of the pandemic, this would only reduce warming by 0.01C by 2050. While the report looks at the plans that governments have submitted to curb their CO2, it also examines the roles of lifestyles and consumption patterns of individuals. The global top 10% of income earners use around 45% of all the energy consumed for land transport and around 75% of all the energy for aviation, compared with just 10% and 5% respectively for the poorest 50% of households, the report says. If the world wants to keep on track to restrict the rise in temperatures this century to 1.5C, then these high carbon footprints will need to be significantly curbed to around 2.5 tonnes of CO2 per capita by 2030. For the poorest 50% of the world, that would actually mean an increase in their footprint by a factor of three. And for the top 10% of earners, this would mean cuts to around one tenth of their current level. But for the richest 1%, it would mean a dramatic reduction. "The wealthy bear the greatest responsibility in this area," Unep executive director Inger Anderson wrote in a foreword to the report. "The combined emissions of the richest 1% of the global po[CENSORED]tion account for more than twice the combined emissions of the poorest 50%." "This elite will need to reduce their footprint by a factor of 30 to stay in line with the Paris Agreement targets," she wrote. The report shows the types of lifestyle changes that would make a difference. Foregoing one long-haul international return flight could reduce your personal footprint by almost two tonnes of CO2. Switching to renewable electricity by households could curb carbon by around 1.5 tonnes per capita, while embracing a vegetarian diet would save around half a tonne of carbon on average. "The UNEP report shows that the over-consumption of a wealthy minority is fuelling the climate crisis, yet it is poor communities and young people who are paying the price," said Tim Gore, head of climate policy at Oxfam, and a contributing author to the report. "It will be practically and politically impossible to close the emissions gap if governments don't cut the carbon footprint of the wealthy and end the inequalities which leave millions of people without access to power or unable to heat As well as the lifestyle and consumption changes that individuals can make, the report also details the opportunities that exist for governments in pursuing a green recovery from Covid-19. If countries invest in climate action, this could reduce expected emissions in 2030 by around 25%, enough to give the world a 66% chance of holding temperatures below 2C. "The year 2020 is on course to be one of the warmest on record, while wildfires, storms and droughts continue to wreak havoc," said Inger Andersen. "However, Unep's Emissions Gap report shows that a green pandemic recovery can take a huge slice out of greenhouse gas emissions and help slow climate change. I urge governments to back a green recovery in the next stage of Covid-19 fiscal interventions and raise significantly their climate ambitions in 2021." The Unep report says that so far, action by governments on a green recovery has been limited - but a growing number of countries are committing to net-zero emissions targets by the middle of the century. But to keep to the 2C goal, the level of ambition in the Paris agreement needs to be tripled. To keep under 1.5C, that ambition needs to increase five-fold. "The life raft that we have is a green recovery," said Dr Kat Kramer from Christian Aid. "Combining post-Covid economic investment to accelerate the change to a zero-carbon world gives us real hope that we can limit global heating to the all-important 1.5C temperature increase. "Warming above that will lead to increasingly severe impacts on the planet and its people and could kick start feedbacks in the climate system that could lead to runaway climate change." FRANKFURT -- BMW plans to step up its production of electrified vehicles, CEO Oliver Zipse told a German newspaper. "We already had ambitions growth plans and want to further expand our market position," Zipse said in an interview with the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper published on Sunday. Between 2021 and 2023, BMW will build 250,000 more electric cars than originally planned," Zipse said. Electrified vehicles will account for about a fifth of BMW's sales by 2023, up from about 8 percent now, he added. Zipse denied that BMW and other German automakers had underestimated electric-car maker Tesla, which is building its first European factory near Berlin. Tesla's growth and market share gains, from a low base, were "an impressive entrepreneurial achievement," Zipse said. Zipse said his "biggest concern" is that Germany's transition to electric cars will be hampered by a lack of charging infrastructure, with Europe's biggest economy expected to have as many as 10 million of the vehicles on the road by 2030. To cope with this amount, 15,000 private and about 1,300 public charging points would have to be put into operation every week starting now, Zipse told the paper. "Unfortunately we are far from that," Zipse said. "Therefore, the next big joint project in Europe must be to expand charging infrastructure." Bloomberg and Reuters contributed to this report
