  2. Sales of PCs have slumped in the US during the first quarter of 2022, but the news may not be entirely bad for manufacturers. The latest figures from Canalys state that 19.5 million desktops, notebooks and workstation units were shipped in Q1 2022, down 14% compared to the same period in the previous year. However revenues were up 40% as high-end devices increasingly dominated the market, particularly from business and enterprise customers looking to upgrade their tech stack. Sales of premium device such as Apple's M1-powered MacBook line looked to address the growing move towards hybrid working, as users turned to devices offering high-end features such as video conferencing and all-day battery life. PC sales fall Canalys found that Dell was once again the most successful manufacturer, seeing sales grow 7% compared to the previous year to take top spot for the third quarter in a row. The company shipped 5.14 million units in total during the quarter for a 26% market share, ahead of HP in second (4.29 million units for 22% share), Lenovo (3.26 million units for 17%) and Apple (2.67 million units for 14% share). HP and Lenovo both saw significant drops in sales compared to 2021, registering a 40% and 24% slump, respectively - however, Apple saw an 18% growth as users flocked to its M1 devices. A collapse in Chromebook sales was a major part of the overall fall, with notebook shipments dropping 22% as education spending on new devices fell as students returned to a normal school schedule following the easing of the “US PC shipments underwent a third consecutive quarter of decline as the relative strengths of end-user segments changed,” said Brian Lynch, Canalys Research Analyst. “The consumer and education segments saw demand slow further due to market saturation and rising concerns about inflation, which peaked in March at 8.5%, the highest rate of twelve-month increase since 1981." "Hybrid work has proved to be a key driver for commercial shipments as employees rely on their devices more than ever for productivity. Features to support hybrid workstyles, such as better audio/video capabilities and longer battery life, have become increasingly important, giving workers more reason to ask for device upgrades. Commercial demand is set to remain strong this year despite the macroeconomic pressure facing the PC industry and will help limit the overall expected shipment declines.” https://www.techradar.com/news/pc-shipments-fall-again-but-still-raking-in-the-money
  3. The other day on Twitter, a business owner decided to ask his followers one of those questions designed to spark interaction and engagement: “What’s the weirdest way you’ve ever made money?” One response brought up Facebook, but not in the way you might think. Rather than via something like the social network’s Marketplace tool, the Twitter user answered, “Facebook just sent me a check for $400 for being creepy with my data as part of some class action thing.” What’s more, many of you out there might be able to say the same thing soon. That’s because settlement checks for $397 are going out right now, and we’ve got all the details below. Including what this is for, who should receive one, and when. Facebook settlement check This umpteenth Facebook scandal stems from a law in Illinois called the Biometric Privacy Act. A Chicago news article explains that, because of the law, “companies are not allowed to collect, store, or give out biometric data, which includes things like face or fingerprint scans, without first giving notice and obtaining personal consent.” You only need just a passing familiarity with Facebook and the way it operates to understand that, yes, not only was the social networking giant sued as a result of this law. But the litigation turned into a giant class-action lawsuit. One that resulted in, among other things, Facebook setting up a $650 million fund to compensate a little more than 1 million people. “Facebook and the Class Representatives spent more than five years in Court fighting this case,” the settlement website reads. “Shortly before trial, both sides agreed to a settlement. The Settlement gives Class Members guaranteed payments now whereas in a trial, Class Members might get nothing or might get payments only years from now. Because there is a settlement, the Court has not decided who should win the case.” Fast facts about the class action: When will your settlement check arrive? Facebook class action update: “The Settlement Administrator began sending settlement payments to class members on May 9, 2022. It will take about two weeks to finish mailing the checks and processing the electronic payments. If you are expecting a payment but haven’t yet received it, we ask that you wait until mid-June before making an inquiry.” This litigation, by the way, is but the latest in a string of headaches mounting at CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s scandal-plagued empire. Just a few days ago, an all-new suit was filed targeting the social networking company. It came from Washington DC Attorney General Karl Racine, about which he had this to say: “We’re suing Mark Zuckerberg for his role in Facebook’s misleading privacy practices and failure to protect millions of users’ data. Our investigation shows extensive evidence that Zuckerberg was personally involved in failures that led to the Cambridge Analytica incident.” https://bgr.com/business/facebook-may-owe-you-a-400-settlement-check-heres-how-to-find-out/

  5. Apex Legends has gone pocket-sized with Apex Legends Mobile, an entirely separate version of the battle royale game for Android and iOS devices. Apex Legends Mobile is quite different from its older sibling, featuring a unique roster, maps, modes, and progression track--some of which unfortunately detract from the overall experience. However, Apex Legends Mobile streamlines the process of playing a battle royale to create a fairly rewarding experience that's fun to play. Apex Legends Mobile is a battle royale game first and foremost. You and your squadmates pick from a roster of hero characters called "legends," before then dropping onto a map. To win, you need to loot supplies and weapons, escape the encroaching energy wall that slowly corrals squads into an ever-dwindling space, and be the last team standing. When you fall in battle, your allies can grab your banner from the deathbox you leave behind and respawn you, keeping the whole team in the fight. There's a satisfying heft to shooting and smoothness to movement, and the unique strengths and weaknesses of each playable legend encourage teams to stay and work together. Color-coded attachments and ammo types ensure the momentum of the match is constantly moving forward--at a glance, you know whether a pile of loot contains anything you might want or need--so you aren't wasting time navigating menus and can get back to the action. All of this, of course, is directly pulled from the already superb Apex Legends. If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it. The game features two other modes beyond battle royale: Arenas and Team Deathmatch. Arenas is a 3v3 mode in which teams compete in a collection of rounds where items, legend abilities, and weapons need to be purchased with currency at the start of every match. Arenas offers a much higher skill threshold than the standard battle royale mode, as there are no respawns. TDM, meanwhile, is far more approachable, putting players into 6v6 matches where you can change your weapon or legend whenever, with infinite respawns. Arenas is great. TDM isn't. Arenas leans into why the battle royale's combat is so compelling: Teams have to work together, intelligently using their firearms, abilities, and knowledge of the map to plan an attack, execute, and adapt if necessary. None of that exists in TDM, which is your standard mindless shoot-'em-up game mode seen in practically every shooter--it lacks the same uniqueness and brand of flavor Respawn has captured in Arenas and battle royale. Even as an on-ramp for new players, the mode is not compelling, since TDM has to be unlocked and you'll likely have a few hours under your belt by the time you do. And with a firing range and non-ranked playlists, TDM isn't an ideal warm-up mode either. Apex Legends Mobile offers rewards to players in a number of tracks. Daily and weekly challenges are available to further your progression in both the free and premium tiers of a battle pass, experience points earned by playing the game contribute to your player level, Apex Packs unlock cosmetics for legends and weapons, and there is also the perk system. All those different types of progression are a lot to keep track of, but it ensures that you're often earning something or working towards unlocking some sort of reward with every match you play. Most of it is your typical live-service game fare and provides a compelling enough reason to turn on the game every day and play a quick match or two, though the perk system, in particular, presents an interesting twist. In Apex Legends Mobile, playing as a certain legend nets you points towards unlocking unique perks for them, allowing you to further customize a character to fit your ideal playstyle. You can make the speed demon Octane even more difficult to catch by equipping the ¡Vámanos! perk, for example, which gives him a speed boost if his armor is ever shattered, or dabble in a riskier playstyle with his Stunt Mode perk, which changes his Stim so it can be toggled on and off--allowing you to maintain your enhanced speed at the cost of constantly losing health. Each character can only be equipped with three of these perks at a time, and they're divided into categories to prevent any unfair combinations from forming (at least, from what I've seen). The system adds a welcome complexity to every character in Apex Legends Mobile--none of these perks can fundamentally alter a legend's place in the meta, but they do add fun considerations in every match. Plus, perks ensure you're still feeling a sense of progression and variety even if you're only playing with the same two or three characters. Regarding characters, Apex Legends Mobile starts with a healthy ensemble of 10 (though only a few are unlocked from the get-go). Thankfully you unlock new characters far faster than you can in Apex Legends, so you won't be stuck with the same faces for long. Interestingly, Apex Legends Mobile has an exclusive legend named Fade. Fade is a fun characte and a much-needed addition for Mobile--with no cross-progression or cross-play between this game and Apex Legends, having a strong incentive like a new legend to play ensures Mobile remains a complimentary choice for long-time Apex Legends players. Jumping into this game doesn't feel like simply starting over in the literal same experience, largely for how Fade affects the in-match meta. The only true downside to his inclusion is that he contributes to Apex Legends Mobile's offensive legend overstuffing. This is also an issue in Apex Legends, but is especially egregious in Mobile where half of the starting roster is geared towards attacking other teams (in Apex Legends, only three of the starting legends were offensive characters). The roster is seriously lacking in options for players wanting to focus on defense, recon, or support. Whereas Apex Legends' control scheme is designed in a way to encourage players to use the ping system, Apex Legends Mobile is, at least mechanically, more focused on the fact that players can only play with their thumbs. As such, all inputs need to be condensed so you can play with just two fingers. Apex Legends Mobile implements some smart quality-of-life improvements to streamline the mechanics of its battle royale. The game is never playing for you--victory remains a rewarding result as it is still largely determined by individual skill and a squad's teamwork. Instead, Apex Legends Mobile automates the process of looting deathboxes, for example, quickly grabbing the attachments and ammo that fit your equipped guns. If you want to slowly scroll through a deathbox's contents for grenades, extra healing, or attachments you can't use right now but may want to hold onto for later, you still can, but Apex Legends Mobile speeds up that process for anyone who may not be dextrous enough to do so in the midst of a firefight. Features like this ensure the small amount of real estate available on a smartphone's screen isn't wasted on buttons that may not add as much to the experience as the actual shooting. Though most are aimed at speeding up the looting process, allowing you to get back to the fight as quickly as possible, a few exist on the combat side, as well. For instance, you automatically aim down sights when shooting, removing the hassle of needing to press and hold down an additional button while trying to hit a target that's further away. Playing on the screen is still not an ideal setup--this is a fast-paced shooter after all, and a touchscreen just isn't as responsive as a good ol' fashioned gamepad. Plus, even on a substantially sized phone screen (I play on a Samsung Galaxy S10), I still accidentally fire my gun on occasion when I only mean to look around--everything is just so close together that if my thumb drifts even a little, I accidentally pull the trigger. And if my teammates' habit of randomly firing into the air or at a wall where there is no enemy is any indication, I'm not the only one accidentally doing this. In a game like Apex Legends Mobile, where conserving your ammo is crucial and ensuring enemies you're sneaking up on can't hear you, shooting when you don't mean to is frustrating. Support for every gamepad controller and handheld attachment isn't available at launch, but Respawn says full support is coming eventually. Like the Switch version of Apex Legends, Apex Legends Mobile compromises on graphical detail, draw distance, and the speed at which assets are loaded in order to run on Android and iOS devices. This means long-range precision weapons are harder to use (especially with touchscreen controls), which unfortunately favors the meta towards needing automatic and semi-automatic firearms in order to win. Regular frame rate issues also persist, often dipping when you're redeploying, bouncing off a jump pad, or traveling on a zipline. Apex Legends Mobile can also stutter if multiple squads are fighting within the same enclosed space. Unlike the Switch version, Apex Legends Mobile does not support cross-play with the Xbox, PlayStation, and PC versions of Apex Legends, so these technical issues aren't as drastic a problem. However, these issues are annoying whenever they pop up (brief as they may be) and become frustrating when the result is a missed shot or poorly timed dodge. Overall, Apex Legends Mobile is exactly what's being advertised: This is Apex Legends, but on mobile devices. This means Respawn has made some serious concessions to its battle royale in order to make the whole thing work, especially when it comes to visuals and performance. And not all of the new additions to the formula, like Team Deathmatch, add anything compelling. But the perk system and first mobile-exclusive legend create a strong draw for Apex Legends Mobile existing alongside Apex Legends as a companion game. If you want to play Apex Legends on the go, this fulfills that need. Just don't come into it thinking this is the best way to play Respawn's battle royale game. https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/apex-legends-mobile-review-pocket-sized-royale/1900-6417885/
  6. Sega has announced that a Sonic Central livestream will take place on June 7, offering a look at upcoming projects, partnerships, and events happening this year. You can watch it later today in the embed below. Announced on Twitter, the Sonic Central livestream will happen June 7 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET on the Sonic YouTube and Twitch channels, as well as here on GameSpot. While the tweet doesn't mention any specific announcements, last year's Sonic Central saw the announcement of Sonic Origins, Sonic Frontiers, and Sonic Colors: Ultimate, so there is potential for some big announcements. The livestream could see a release date for Sonic Frontiers, the upcoming 3D "open-zone" game from Sonic Team, which is set to release late this year. Multiple Sonic Frontiers gameplay videos have been released in recent weeks as well, possibly pointing to a big announcement soon. Sonic Origins, the collection of classic Sonic games, is set to release on June 23, so it could easily get a new trailer during the show. The previous Sonic Central also saw the announcement of some mobile game crossovers with Sonic as well as a bunch of different merch lines, including some Sonic chains. Sega did not announce a runtime for the Sonic Central livestream, although it will likely be on the shorter side, since it is only focused on a single franchise. https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sonic-central-livestream-set-for-june-7/1100-6504219/

  8. A marine park named Miami Seaquarium hit headlines earlier this month when a dolphin attacked a trainer during a live show. In a video captured by a spectator, the animal can be seen behaving aggressively towards the employee, before dragging her underwater in front of the audience. The park later released a statement claiming the incident occurred because the trainer had accidentally scratched the animal. It has since, thankfully, been confirmed that both the dolphin and trainer are recovering well. The attack was hard to watch, and no doubt horrifying for the trainer who fell victim. While we of course must have sympathy for the staff and audience – for whom it will likely have been a hugely upsetting experience – we must not forget that the incident occurred because of the park itself. The dolphin should never have attacked the trainer because they should never have been in captivity in the first place. No animal should be forced to spend their life in an unnatural environment, made to perform tricks for a screaming audience. Just like all captive animals, the dolphin would have experienced years of physical and mental anguish before the incident occurred. The problem with animal entertainment venues Marine parks and aquariums are part of a billion-dollar industry that exists to entertain the public by catching fish and sea mammals, including dolphins and killer whales, and using them as living exhibits. In the natural world, such animals would form close bonds with their pods and spend their days foraging and hunting for prey. But those kept captive aren’t afforded such enrichments. The animals, many of whom have evolved to travel up to 100 miles a day at fast speeds in the wild, are instead forced to spend their lives swimming endlessly and aimlessly in tiny barren tanks, or being harassed by humans. Due to the conditions in which they’re kept, a 2019 report by World Animal Protection found that captive animals exhibited abnormal levels of aggression. This indicates that the attack at Miami Seaquarium was likely a direct result of captivity. While the park would have you believe this was an isolated incident, attacks on humans in similar attractions are not uncommon. This is just the latest in a long line of reminders that these sentient animals should be urgently removed from captivity. Animal attacks In 2019, a 10-year-old girl was attacked during a “swimming with dolphins” experience in Mexico. The dolphins – who were being held captive in a small closed off section of the sea – bit and dragged the girl underwater in front of trainers and her horrified mother. Thankfully, the child survived, but was left with several cuts, bruises, and bite marks. Injuries like broken arms, cracked sternums, and lacerations, as well as shock, have all been documented at similar attractions. For instance, in 2004, a man required surgery after being attacked by a dolphin, also at Miami Seaquarium. Attacks from captive animals can also have far more tragic consequences. Writing in the CRC Handbook of Marine Mammal Medicine, Veterinarian Jay C. Sweeney describes aggression by killer whales toward their trainers as “a matter of grave concern.” Sweeney added: “Aggressive manifestations toward trainers have included butting, biting, grabbing, dunking, and holding trainers on the bottom of pools and preventing their escape.” In 2009, an orca named Keto, who had been born in SeaWorld and forced to perform at parks all over the globe, carried out a brutal and sustained attack on a trainer named Alexis Martínez, resulting in his death. Further, in February of 2010, a SeaWorld trainer named Dawn Brancheau tragically died of “drowning and traumatic injuries” after being attacked by a 22-foot orca named Tilikum during a live show. Inherently cruel attractions and facilities The latter death was documented in the 2013 film Blackfish, which caused an unprecedented shift in public opinion against the once beloved and respected attractions. Since its release, parks like SeaWorld and Miami Seaquarium have been falling out of favor with the general public, who have held marches and protests against them. But it’s unfortunate that the same energy hasn’t been directed toward the industry as a whole. It’s not just the highly publicised controversial parks that are the issue, but every single business where animals are kept in captivity. Even the so-called “good” aquariums are still inherently cruel, and deserve as much condemnation as their more notorious counterparts. Studies have shown that around 90 percent of public aquariums house animals that display signs of extreme mental distress, including swimming in circles, bobbing their heads, and pacing back and forth. As well as mental effects, aquariums can also result in physical illness. The copper sulphate and chlorine used to clean tanks can cause blindness and skin damage in dolphins and seals, and many animals have been shown to exhibit signs of stress-induced self-harm, such as chewing on concrete to destroy their teeth. London Aquarium, a hugely po[CENSORED]r tourist attraction that’s typically believed to be one of the best in the world, recently sparked upset over the conditions in which its Gentoo penguins are kept. One visitor proclaimed to have been in “tears” by their tiny underground living enclosure, and noted that one animal was engaging in repetitive behaviour. Taking animals out of the wild Many of the animals at parks and aquariums have been captured from the wild. Each year at the notorious Taiji dolphin hunt in Japan, hundreds of the animals are sold on to aquariums around the world. Boats will often chase pods of dolphins or whales into shallow waters to trap them, before dragging them on board with a net. Those deemed unsuitable for captivity will be thrown back into the water, and many die of shock or pneumonia. It is clear that the issue with marine parks and aquariums isn’t about a few “bad” parks, but the industry as a whole. Animals are not ours to use or abuse in any way; it would be impossible to create an ethical, profitable business built on the exploitation of any animal. Marine parks and aquariums should take urgent steps to cease the purchase and breeding of animals, while moving their existing ones to appropriate sanctuaries. https://plantbasednews.org/opinion/opinion-piece/dolphin-attack-miami-animals-captivity/
