  4. From a vantage point more than 50 stories high, Ali Mansour looks down on the islands he helped build nearly two decades ago. "It was a great challenge," he says. "A (once-in-a) lifetime experience." Those islands make up Dubai's iconic Palm Jumeirah -- a man-made, palm tree-shaped archipelago home to luxury hotels, pristine beaches, and nearly 80,000 people. "It was a first," recounts Mansour, "an unprecedented project of that scale." A civil engineer by trade, Mansour moved from Canada to Dubai in 1998 to work with a consultancy firm. He watched from a distance as the Palm project began in June 2001. "I became very curious when the first satellite pictures were published in 2002, showing a tiny piece of land emerging above the ocean surface," he says. "Then I decided I'm going to do whatever to join the company behind the work on this project." A spectacular feat of engineering, the man-made islands of Palm Jumeirah are 20 years old this year.
  5. (CNN)Jeremy Corbyn, the left-wing leader of Britain's Labour Party and leader of the official opposition, has just voted to trigger a general election that he cannot possibly win. To foreign observers, this may seem like an act of self-sabotage from an inept politician. Here in the UK, it is understood as the surrender of a man who has run out of options. Theresa May now holds all the cards in British politics. To those who noted the authoritarian language of her statement on Tuesday, in which she publicly called for a new election, the latest extension of her near-total power has become a cause for serious concern. Unlike the US, Britain does not traditionally have fixed term limits for its political representatives. The law requires that the British Parliament must be dissolved every five years maximum and new elections held. However, until recently, there has been no minimum time-period for a Parliament. As per the unwritten understandings that define our constitutional monarchy, only the monarch can appoint a date for new elections -- in practice, she always does so when a Prime Minister requests it. General election: UK Parliament approves Theresa May's snap vote General election: UK Parliament approves Theresa May's snap vote This all changed in 2011. The coalition government between the Conservative and Liberal Democrats was unprecedented, so it required an unprecedented constitutional framework. To reassure his junior partners that they would get a full five-year term in power -- and that the Conservatives wouldn't try to ditch them if they outstripped them in the polls midterm -- then-Prime Minister David Cameron agreed to pass the Fixed Term Parliaments Act, sti[CENSORED]ting that Parliaments should last no more nor less than five years. The Act's provisions can be bypassed if a two-thirds majority of the House of Commons agrees to the prime minister's call for an early election. It was a temporary answer to historic necessity. The British people have a long, entrenched understanding that the prime minister of the United Kingdom holds the prerogative to choose the date of the next election. Within the ruling parliamentary party, calling an early election is always a defining moment of leadership: it is often a calculated risk in the hope of increasing a parliamentary majority. But this Act is now a blip that prime ministers have to work within. Thus, Theresa May effectively issued a challenge to the leaders of other parliamentary parties: Join me in voting for an election and give yourself a chance to take your manifesto to the people, or block this election and be known as a coward. Watch: UK Parliament approves snap vote Watch: UK Parliament approves snap vote 00:41 Ironically, the lower Corbyn sinks in the polls, the more any attempt to avoid an election would look like fear. Nothing is more shameful than a politician who's scared to ask the electorate what it thinks. So effectively, a British prime minister can still call an election whenever he or she likes. And having proved the Fixed Term Parliaments Act obsolete, it's likely that Theresa May will abolish it altogether during the next Parliament, assuming she is still in charge. The chances that anyone else will have replaced her as Prime Minister are remote: Jeremy Corbyn now trails her by around 20 points in most opinion polls. That, of course, is why she has called this election now. She's cashing in at the top of her political valuation: many predict that the Labour Party will be near destroyed as a political force on June 8. Yet May seems to want to do more than crush her political opposition electorally. In her call for a new election, she swelled with righteous anger at the very concept of political opposition. May has framed this election as a re-endorsement of her strategy for negotiating Britain's exit from the European Union (although you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in Britain who can tell you exactly what that is). She'll have a hard time finding a clear enemy: only the tiny Liberal Democrat party, left with nine seats after the collapse of the Coalition, have committed to blocking Brexit altogether. The Labour Party is divided on the issue, with Jeremy Corbyn himself a Eurosceptic. But in Tuesday's statement, she reiterated that the British people had voted firmly to leave the EU. "On the issue of Brexit, the country is coming together but Westminster is not," May said. Her speech drew a picture of united, Eurosceptic citizens backing their leader whilst a cabal of Westminster elites does its best to undermine the national will. The next morning, the Daily Mail newspaper, which has been a cheerleader of Brexit and May's leadership style since she took office, ran the front-page headline: CRUSH THE SABOTEURS. Jeremy Corbyn wins the UK Labour Party's leadership battle Jeremy Corbyn wins the UK Labour Party's leadership battle This is a common tactic of authoritarian leaders: depict any opposition as anti-patriotic, a fifth column working to undermine the will of the people. Those in Britain most committed to an extreme break with the EU have pushed this line for some time. After the High Court ruled that a parliamentary vote would be required to enforce the referendum result, another recent Daily Mail front page pictured each of the judges involved, under the headline: ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE. And today in Parliament, May told the people exactly what to do to stop these enemies: "Every vote for the Conservatives will make it harder for those who want to stop me from getting the job done ... Every vote for the Conservatives will make me stronger when I negotiate for Britain with the EU." In Britain, we are not used to voting in order to affirm a political strongman. Theresa May is not a pseudo-democratic dictator in the mode of Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan or Hungary's Viktor Orban, both of whom used initial election victories to facilitate a one-party takeover of state machinery. Yet there were hints of Europe's new authoritarianism everywhere in her speeches on the steps of Downing Street on Tuesday and in the House of Commons today. "Division in Westminster will risk our ability to make a success of Brexit and it will cause damaging uncertainty and instability to the country." Was she suggesting that Britain's House of Commons -- the home of civil debate -- should be defined instead by agreement? Theresa May is now powerful enough to shame Jeremy Corbyn into signing his own death warrant. But she should not be allowed to shame critics of her Brexit strategy into national vow of silence.

(Photo Credit: Representative Photo) Bhubaneswar: The annual "Chandan Yatra" and "Akshaya Tritiya" festivals of Lord Jagannath will be held inside the temple premises in Puri on Sunday, but the rituals will be performed by the priests and servitors and no devotees will be allowed in due to the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus, the temple management committee head said on Saturday. The two festivals are considered important because they mark the beginning of the preparations for the world famous Jagannath Rath Yatra in Odisha's pilgrimage city. The Shree Jagannath temple of Puri is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Vishnu. PauseUnmute Fullscreen VDO.AI "The rituals will be performed by selected priests and servitors but devotees will not be allowed to enter the temple premises," Gajapati Maharaj of Puri Divya Singha Deb, who heads the temple management board, said. On the possibility of holding the Jagannath Yatra as per schedule on June 23, Deb said a decision in this regard will be taken after May 3. The extended nationwide lockdown is slated to end on May 3. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik held discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday over organising the Rath Yatra this year, as the centuries-old religious event plunged into uncertainty following the COVID-19 outbreak. Akshaya Tritiya, which heralds the beginning of the construction of chariots for the annual yatra, is held at the "Rath Khala" outside the temple, while the Chandan Yatra is organised in a tank in Puri. "During the Chandan Yatra or 'sandalwood voyage' of Lord Jagannath, images of the deity are floated on a boat in a sacred tank in Puri. "It is the longest festival of Lord Jagannath that is held for 42 days in two phases," Bhaskar Mishra, a researcher on the Jagannath temple culture, said. The decision to organise the festivals inside the temple premises was taken during the temple managing committee's meeting with Govardhan Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati on Friday night, Deb said. "According to the advice of Guruji (Shankaracharya), it has been decided to conduct both Akshaya Tritiya and the Chandan Yatra on the temple premises. The Guruji said the tradition of the temple should be maintained and the centuries-old rituals cannot stop," Deb told reporters. He had earlier said the temple administration will not undertake any activities outside the temple premises in view of the ongoing shutdown. Apart from Deb, members of the Jagannath Temple Management Committee, including Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) chief administrator Krishan Kumar, the district collector and superintendent of police (SP) of Puri, met the Shankaracharya to seek his advice on how to conduct the rituals amid the lockdown. Deb said the lockdown guidelines prohibit religious congregations both inside and outside the temple. The 12th-century shrine has been closed for devotees since the imposition of the lockdown in Odisha on March 22. Kumar said the collector and SP will hold a meeting with the servitors of the temple on Saturday to decide about the place on the premises where the Chandan Yatra and Akshaya Tritiya rituals will be held.
  8. They lost their loved ones to Covid. Then they heard from them again By John Blake, CNN Updated 0807 GMT (1607 HKT) June 20, 2021 (CNN)They never ran out of things to talk about. It was obvious from the start. He was a brawny former Maine lobsterman with a booming baritone. She was a redhead with freckles from Wisconsin who worked in corporate recruiting. They talked about everything from sci-fi movies and her love for the rock group Bon Jovi to whether the Lord of the Rings film trilogy did justice to J.R.R. Tolkien's books. He asked for permission to kiss her on their first date. She said yes. When Ian and Michelle Horne got married, he wore a purple tie on their wedding day because it was her favorite color. As the years rolled by, they got matching tattoos and gave each other nicknames from the movie, "The Princess Bride." He called her Princess Buttercup and she called him "Farm Boy Wesley." They made plans to visit Ireland this year to celebrate her Irish roots. Then came the pandemic. Last fall, after a long battle, Michelle Horne died from complications caused by Covid-19. Ian Horne's "superpower," as he called her, was gone. They had been married almost 10 years. But not long after his wife's death, the morning radio deejay in Wichita, Kansas, wondered if Michelle was still speaking to him. He was driving to his job in the predawn darkness when he spotted something odd. About two dozen streetlights flanking the highway had turned purple. They looked like a lavender string of pearls glowing in the night sky. Michelle and Ian Horne. The couple were married almost 10 years. Michelle and Ian Horne. 14. F3 Rosso top speed Following in the steps of the Dragster Rosso, Brutale Rosso, and Turismo Veloce Rosso comes the new 2021 MV Agusta F3 Rosso. Each of the Rosso editions from MV Agusta is a lower-cost entry into its lineup. By using different components and tuning, MV Agusta offers a lower price with performance tradeoffs that many riders likely won’t notice or consider significant. Let’s take a closer look at the new F3 Rosso. We haven’t seen the 2021 F3 RC yet, so we will focus on the F3 updates we’re seeing on the F3 Rosso compared to last year’s F3 RC. The 2021 MV Agusta F3 Rosso puts out 147 horsepower at 13,000 rpm. To give an idea of the difference between the Rosso and the upmarket RC, last year’s RC tops out a 153 horsepower at 13,250 rpm. If you’re on a track, that can make a difference down the start/finish straight at Mugello. However, on the street, it might not matter that much. Also, the other three Rossos all put out 112 horsepower or less, so the F3 Rosso is the hotrod of the bunch. F3 Rosso seat height The frame places have been redesigned. Stiffness has been increased both torsionally and longitudinally. The motor gets reworking to meet Euro 5 standards. Less internal motor friction is a focus of the 2021 F3 Rosso. The new crankshaft main bearings, piston rod bearings, and countershaft bearings are all designed to reduce friction. The valve tappets are DLC-coated for smoother operation, and the valve guides are now sintered. F3 Rosso MSRP To keep heat at bay, the new radiator has a claimed five percent efficiency increase. There are new headers designed to boost torque. The muffler has also been updated. The 2021 MV Agusta F3 Rosso has a new clutch basket for surer engagement. The quickshifter also gets a new sensor for more precise shifting with less effort. F3 Rosso gauge The engine management system gets new algorithms. According to MV Agusta, the result is “a direct connection between throttle and rear wheel.” MV Agusta gave the 2021 F3 Rosso a new ABS setup and IMU. The Continental MK100 system is cornering aware. There is also rear-wheel lift mitigation, wheelie control, and launch control. You get to view all of the electronic rider aid options on a new 5.5-inch TFT dash. There’s also a new control module on the right handlebar. F3 Rosso tire sizes We don’t have a US price or availability date in the United States for the 2021 MV Agusta F3 Rosso. We can tell you that the F3 Rosso will run £16,400 in the UK, and it comes in any color you like, as long as it’s Ago Red. 2021 MV Agusta F3 Rosso Specs ENGINE Type: Inline-3 Displacement: 798cc Bore x stroke: 79 x 54.3mm Compression ratio: 13.3:1 Maximum power: 147 horsepower @ 13,000 rpm Maximum torque: 65 ft-lbs @ 10,100 rpm Maximum speed: 149 mph Fueling: Mikuni throttle bodies w/ Eldor Nemo 2.1 ECU Valvetrain: DOHC; 4 titanium valves per cylinder Cooling: Liquid and oil Transmission: Cassette-style 6-speed w/ quickshifter Clutch: Wet multi-disc w/ slipper function Final drive: Chain CHASSIS Frame: Tubular steel trellis w/ aluminum swingarm Front suspension; travel: Fully adjustable Marzocchi inverted 43mm fork; 4.9 inches Rear suspension; travel: Linkage-free fully adjustable Sachs progressive-damping shock; 5.1 inches Wheels: Aluminum Front wheel: 17 x 3.50 Rear wheel: 17 x 5.50 Tires: Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa II Front tire: 120/70 x 17 Rear tire: 180/55 x 17 Front brakes: 320mm floating discs w/ radially mounted 4-piston Brembo calipers and radial-pump Brembo master cylinder Rear brake: 220mm disc w/ 2-piston Brembo caliper ABS: Cornering-aware Continental MK100 ABS w/ rear wheel lift mitigation DIMENSIONS and CAPACITIES Wheelbase: 54.3 inches Seat height: 32.7 inches Fuel tank capacity: 4.4 gallons Estimated fuel consumption: 39 mpg Curb weight: N/A Color: Ago Red 2021 MV Agusta F3 Rosso Price: £16,400 (US MSRP $TBA)
  15. The dream home for Star Wars fans is now on the market in Texas. But the path to the dark side is not cheap. Known as "The Darth Vader House," the 7,000 square-foot home in Houston's West University Place subdivision has a listing price of $4,300,000. The nickname comes from the exterior's resemblance to the helmet of the famed Star Wars villain. With an 18,000 square foot lot, the force is strong with this one. 'Star Wars' script revealing how plot twist was kept secret sells for $32K 'Star Wars' script revealing how plot twist was kept secret sells for $32K The median lot square feet for West University Place is 7,500 -- just about the size of this home. Home values in the area range between $805,000 and $2.7 million -- far, far away from this price tag. The house was built in 1992 and features four bedrooms, five full bathrooms and a four-car garage. The listing by Martha Turner Sotheby's International Realty also boasts the contemporary home's open rooms, ample closets, versatile living spaces and massive windows. So the dark side may not be so dark after all.
  16. An American teacher was jailed for child abuse in China in 2014. He still says he's innocent — if only anyone would listen. By James Griffiths, CNN Updated 1604 GMT (0004 HKT) June 4, 2021 Hong KongDavid McMahon hated the design of his classroom. Located on the ground floor of the Pudong campus of the Shanghai French School, its almost floor-to-ceiling windows made him feel like he was "teaching in aquarium," in the words of one of McMahon's colleagues. Passersby couldn't help but look in, and their attention would inevitably distract the kindergarteners inside. But when, in 2013, he was accused of abusing several of his students, the windows suddenly seemed to McMahon and his defenders a saving grace -- proof the claims being made against him could not have happened. How could he have molested multiple children over the course of months, his lawyers planned to ask in court, in full view of anyone walking through a heavily-trafficked area of the campus? It was one of many strands of a defense that seemed relatively iron tight to McMahon and his fiancée Linnea, who said that while they were appalled and upset at the charges, they weren't overly worried, figuring the truth would come out at trial. "At the beginning it just seemed like this couldn't possibly go any further, there wasn't enough evidence, like how could this happen?" said Linnea, who requested to be identified only by her first name in order to protect her privacy. But when McMahon's case came to court, just one of McMahon's witnesses was allowed to testify, and she was only permitted to speak to his character. Almost all the evidence put forward by his lawyers was summarily dismissed, court documents show, demonstrative of the difficulties defense teams often have in the Chinese justice system, where around 99% of prosecutions end in a guilty verdict. On July 2, 2014, McMahon was found guilty of child molestation and sentenced to 12 years in prison. To this day, McMahon maintains he is innocent of all charges against him, despite what supporters say is ongoing pressure from the Chinese authorities to sign a confession, which could bring a reduction in his sentence and better treatment while in prison. No physical or forensic evidence was ever presented to tie McMahon to the crime, with the case relying solely on the testimony of very young children. Claims that their testimony may have been flawed were dismissed by the court, as was the suggestion testimony may have been inappropriately influenced by parents or police. CNN has interviewed over a dozen people involved in the case, including former colleagues of McMahon's and parents at the school where he taught, and reviewed Chinese and US court documents, witness statements, US State Department records, and communications sent by McMahon and his accusers ahead of the trial. None of McMahon's accusers responded to requests for comment. In a statement, the Lycée Français de Shanghai said it had "no comment to make." Prosecutors and police in Shanghai also did not respond. Previously, Chinese officials have stated that the country's "judicial authorities handle cases involving criminals of different nationalities in accordance with law" and that "every criminal is equal in the application of the law." Since he was first arrested, McMahon's family and friends have attempted to get US officials and lawmakers to lobby on his behalf, with little success. Media coverage has been limited to a handful of stories around the time he was charged, largely repeating what was put out by Shanghai prosecutors. Thanks to years of work behind the scenes, however, this has gradually begun to change. McMahon's case has recently been taken up by the James Foley Foundation, which lobbies on behalf of Americans detained overseas. In a statement to CNN, Executive Director Margaux Ewen said that "based on the evidence we've seen from many sources," including FBI agents and US State Department officials, the Foundation believes "David is innocent of the charges against him." "We hope the United States government will be helpful in securing his release and repatriation home to the US," Ewen said. Rob Saale, a former FBI Special Agent and director of the US Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell, who sits on the Foley Foundation's legal advisory council, said that on examining the case "there were a number of factors that caused me to believe that David's conviction was suspect." "What was most troubling was the process for the interviewing of the victims of the case," Saale said, adding that "some of the allegations seemed far fetched," and did not line up with other testimony or evidence.

The cabin benefits from a 10.9-inch touchscreen display, but the 443bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain, which combines a 3.0-litre V6 and a 17.6kWh battery pack for 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds and 24 miles of electric range, is carried over unchanged. Elsewhere, the Bentayga line-up retains V8 petrol power and a W12-engined Bentayga Speed model. BMW i4 BMW i4 Price: £55,000 (est) On sale: Winter 2021 As illustrated by our exclusive image, the BMW i4 is set to be introduced as a four-door all-electric counterpart to the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. Advertisement - Article continues below While the body looks familiar when seen alongside the new 4 Series, there are big introductions under the skin when compared with earlier BMW EVs. That’s courtesy of BMW’s new ‘fifth-generation’ electric drivetrain, which first saw use in the iX3. Benefits include an electric motor and transmission system that’s lighter and more compact, an 80kWh battery with 20 per cent more capacity for its physical size, and a target range of 373 miles. Sustainability measures mean there are fewer rare earth metals in the drive system and two thirds less cobalt in the battery, too. BMW iX BMW iX Price: £70,000 On sale: Autumn 2021 The iX all-electric SUV represents a new era for BMW, because it debuts an all-new scalable architecture. This platform combines an aluminium spaceframe with carbon fibre composites, and there is 20 times more computing power on board than in any previous BMW production car. It’s said to be perfect for the demands of EVs and autonomous driving, and will feature 5G capability and new eighth-generation iDrive infotainment. The iX promises a similar leap in terms of driving and ownership. With a 100kWh battery and two fifth-generation eDrive electric motors, it can send more than 500bhp to all four wheels, boasts a sub-five-second 0-62mph time and is good for up to 376 miles between charges. BMW M3 BMW M3 Price: £74,755 On sale: Now Advertisement - Article continues below The eighth-generation M3 has borrowed the 4 Series’ controversial nostrils, but the bigger news for purists is its optional four-wheel drive, a first for the M3. As with the M5, the system constantly varies torque between the front and rear wheels, but can also be switched to solely rear-drive mode. BMW offers a purely rear-drive model, too. A twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight six features once again, available only in 503bhp Competition spec in the UK, and this is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard, not the dual-clutch transmission seen in its predecessor. Further updates include stiffer engine and chassis mounts, a 10-stage traction control system and six-piston brake calipers. BMW M4 BMW M4 Price: £76,055 On sale: Now The BMW M4 changed its name from M3 with the last generation, but it remains the definitive front-engined, five-seat performance coupé. Its 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six engine is shared with the X3 M and X4 M, and is a familiar recipe from the previous M4. Here it produces 503bhp and 600Nm of torque in Competition spec, the only variant available in the UK, and swaps the previous car’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox for an eight-speed automatic unit. There’s a fully variable all-wheel-drive system (including rear-drive drift mode), but a rear-drive entry-level car is also offered. A new 10-stage traction control system and drift analyser should ease you in. Citroen C6 Citroen C6 Price: £30,000 (est) On sale: Winter 2021 Advertisement - Article continues below Big French cars tend to flop in Britain, but Citroen badly needs a roomy flagship to keep Chinese dealers happy. Our exclusive image reveals how the brand’s next spiritual successor to the iconic DS could look when it arrives later this year. Potentially reviving the C6 name, it fuses a conventional saloon body with the rear end and raised ride height of a crossover, and is based on the same EMP2 platform found under the C5 Aircross. That means it supports hybrid power, but won’t allow Citroen to offer a fully electric version when it launches towards the end of this year. Full details are still to come, but the new car is expected to start from £30k, with plug-in versions priced to compete with premium compact execs. Cupra Born The Born is the first pure EV from sporty SEAT spin-off Cupra. Looking much like the 2019 SEAT el-Born concept, the new EV puts a hot hatch twist on Volkswagen’s MEB architecture (also used by the VW ID.3), although the only confirmed performance figure is a 0-31mph time of 2.9 seconds. Entry-level models default to a 55kWh battery, although Cupra claims that 77kWh variants can travel up to 310 miles on a charge. It also claims that fast-charging capability provides enough energy for 163 miles of travel in just 30 minutes. Advertisement - Article continues below The Born’s dramatic design is boosted by 20-inch alloy wheels, lowered suspension and an aggressive bodykit, while the interior benefits from bucket seats featuring Alcantara centres. Cupra Formentor VZ5 Cupra Formentor Price: £49,000 (est) On sale: Summer 2021 The current 2.0-litre 306bhp Cupra Formentor crossover has already won praise for its dynamics and performance, but now Cupra is upping the ante with the five-cylinder-engined VZ5 version. Also with four-wheel drive (like the 2.0-litre model), the incoming range-topper will have a more powerful turbocharged five-cylinder engine that it shares with the Audi RS Q3. This unit produces 385bhp and 480Nm – slightly less than it does in its Audi applications, but still enabling a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds. Cosmetic tweaks include a new rear diffuser and a staggered quad-exit exhaust to emphasise the VZ5’s extra performance. However, only limited numbers are being imported, and in left-hand drive only. Cupra Leon Cupra Leon Price: from £35,000 On sale: Now The new SEAT Leon is a sportier-looking and slightly more affordable alternative to the latest Volkswagen Golf Mk8 – and the Cupra Leon is the fully fledged performance version of the Spanish car. The plug-in Cupra Leon e-Hybrid will be the first variant to arrive, and purely petrol-powered models will come on stream later. Advertisement - Article continues below The e-Hybrid uses the same powertrain as the Volkswagen Golf GTE. It combines a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine with an e-motor and a 13kWh battery pack for a combined 242bhp, officially returning 217.3mpg and capable of up to 32 miles of electric-only running. Pure-petrol variants of the hot hatchback top out at £35,660, with 296bhp fed through the front wheels, Golf GTI Clubsport-style. A 306bhp all-wheel-drive estate will also be offered at around £38,000. Dacia Sandero Dacia Sandero Price: £7,995 On sale: Now Costing just £7,995, the new Dacia Sandero picks up where the old one left off as the UK’s most affordable new car. But it’s also spacious, pleasingly unpretentious and goodto drive – all of which has helped it to become Dacia’s best-selling car for retail buyers in Europe. Unlike the old Sandero, which used an adapted Mk3 Clio platform, this new model is right up to date. It’s based on the Renault-Nissan CMF-B platform, which means it has exactly the same underpinnings as the latest Mk5 Clio – our current class favourite. The Sandero is available with frugal three-cylinder petrol and LPG bi-fuel engines, and either CVT auto or manual transmissions. Among the Dacia’s driver-assistance features are Emergency Brake Assist, Blind-Spot Warning, Park Assist and Hill-Start Assist. For a little extra ruggedness, the Sandero Stepway adds crossover cred to the mix, courtesy of 41mm of extra ground clearance and chunkier styling. It’s yours from £10,995. Dacia Spring Electric Dacia Spring Electric Price: £19,000 (est) On sale: Spring 2021 The good news is that the Dacia Spring Electric will be one of Europe’s cheapest electric cars when it goes on sale later this year. The bad news is the cut-price EV has not yet been confirmed for launch in the UK as a right-hand-drive model. Closely related to the Renault Kwid sold in India, the Spring Electric is only fractionally longer and wider than the Volkswagen e-up!, but is far more practical due to a 300-litre boot. Its electric drivetrain comprises a small 26.8kWh battery and a 43bhp electric motor, which provide a WLTP-certified range of 140 miles. With DC charging available as an option and such a small battery, a 30kW charger can top the Spring Electric’s battery to 80 per cent in less than an hour.

  20. Kabul (CNN)A raid on a remote village in Afghanistan kills an ageing al Qaeda leader wanted by the FBI. Messages to the group's cells around the world are seized. Two drone strikes on militants in northwest Syria swiftly follow. Details of a little-publicized October raid targeting a senior al Qaeda militant, Husam Abd-al-Rauf, in the Afghan province of Ghazni have revealed how the terror group continues to thrive in Afghanistan under Taliban protection, and remains connected to its other franchises across the globe, according to accounts provided by Afghan intelligence officials to CNN. The operation against al-Rauf netted al Qaeda messages between Afghanistan and Syria, one Afghan official said. Two rare US strikes against al Qaeda militants in Syria's Idlib province followed in the ten days afterwards, although US officials played down any connection. The previously undisclosed details of the al-Rauf raid contribute to a picture of how tight al Qaeda's bonds with the Taliban are, according to one senior Afghan intelligence official speaking to CNN. It is "now much deeper than we think," the senior official said. "It is not only now an ideological connection, it's also a family connection. There are intermarriages. And that is impossible for Taliban to stop, and to not allow [al Qaeda] to do something outside" the country. Satellite imagery shows the Taliban-controlled village of Kunsaf in Ghazni province, where Husam Abd-al-Rauf was tracked down in October Credit: Google Earth & Satellite image ©2021 Maxar Technologies The official said al Qaeda is given sanctuary by the Taliban in exchange for expertise in fund-raising and bomb-making. The terrorists "collect money from different parts of the world and give it to the Taliban," the official explained. "They train suicide bombers and help them in strategic thinking. In return, the Taliban provide them shelter." That assessment from Afghan officials, and the details they provided of al Qaeda in Afghanistan's connectivity with cells around the world, will make uncomfortable reading for the Biden administration as the US troop withdrawal gets underway. President Joe Biden has staked much of his plan to get out of America's longest war on the terror group no longer being a threat to Americans from Afghanistan. When announcing the withdrawal, he said that the US had gone to Afghanistan to be sure it could "not be used as a base from which to attack our homeland again." With al Qaeda "degraded," it had "accomplished that objective," he maintained. US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan has begun US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan has begun Yet in a series of interviews in Kabul, Afghan officials depicted a terror group both enjoying a comfortable shelter in Taliban-controlled areas, and hunted at times by their special forces. One Afghan official suggested the group was about 18 months away from being able to launch attacks on the West, and capable of launching regional attacks from Afghanistan by the end of the year. The rare interviews were granted as Afghan officials grow increasingly concerned that the US withdrawal from the country -- due for completion before the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks carried out by al Qaeda -- will lead to a surge in the group's activities. The Afghan concerns will also build on anxieties over the Taliban's apparent rejection of the diplomatic process it embraced last year with the Trump administration. The Taliban's pledge not to cooperate with terrorists or give them shelter was critical to the peace deal signed with the US in Doha last year, under the Trump administration. The first bullet point of the agreement states that the insurgent group "will prevent the use of the soil of Afghanistan by any group or individual against the security of the United States and its allies." The senior Afghan intelligence official said the peace pledge to the Trump administration "was just like a joke between themselves. They knew that this will not happen." Raid nets new clues about al Qaeda's reach The Afghan officials cited previously undisclosed details about the October raid targeting al-Rauf, also known as Abu Muhsen al-Masri, as evidence of al Qaeda's growth. He died of his injuries shortly after being taken into custody by Afghan special forces in the tiny Taliban-controlled village of Kunsaf, in Ghazni province. He was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by a Manhattan court on December 27, 2018 for "conspiracy to kill United States nationals" and "providing material support for a foreign terrorist organization," according to the FBI wanted poster released at the time. In the past decade, he had released a series of audio recordings and videos through al Qaeda media channels. At times he railed against "the liar in the evil White House who claims that he will withdraw their forces from Afghanistan because the mission has ended." At other points, he scorned Britain and the United States for being racist. Senior Afghan officials said the Egyptian national had been hiding in Afghanistan since he left Pakistan in 2014, communicating with al Qaeda cells in other countries. Another Afghan official added that specific messages found on al-Rauf's personal computer showed encrypted communications with other al Qaeda cells in Syria and Pakistan. Husam Abd-al-Rauf is seen in an FBI most wanted poster, issued in 2019. Husam Abd-al-Rauf is seen in an FBI most wanted poster, issued in 2019. "He was in touch with other key members of al Qaeda in the rest of the world. He had some operational programs," said the senior Afghan intelligence official, separately. The official declined to give more details, citing ongoing counter-terrorism work, but added: "His compound was very well-protected by the Taliban." In the messages found on his computer, al-Rauf told his al Qaeda counterparts that Afghanistan could soon return to its pre-9/11 position as a leading hub for the terror group, the senior official said. He expressed concern that the next phase of the US withdrawal would lead Afghanistan to "become [a] base, a stronghold for those people to organize attacks outside [the country]." The senior intelligence official said he did not have any evidence at present to suggest that al Qaeda was planning operations beyond Afghanistan. "But they are entering a new place of reorganization and then making missions on a larger scale," he said, adding that a detainee from the al-Rauf operation had provided evidence of this during interrogation. Afghan special forces, seen here in a training video, say they lost a soldier in the raid on the compound Husam Abd-al-Rauf was hiding in. Credit: Afghan National Security Directorate training footage In a possible sign of the global reach of the terrorist group's Afghan cells, two pinpoint strikes against al Qaeda militants in Syria were carried out by the US in the days after the al-Rauf raid, and the discovery of messages on his computer to Syrian al Qaeda militants. A second senior Afghan intelligence official told CNN that the US had asked for a delay in publicizing the raid against al-Rauf, which occurred as much as a fortnight before it was announced on October 24. That official added the raid was "most likely" connected to the Syria strikes, but added they had no evidence to that effect. The lies that were told to sustain the US and UK mission in Afghanistan The lies that were told to sustain the US and UK mission in Afghanistan US drones hit two targets in Syria on October 15 and 22, striking al Qaeda cells. Few details were released about the first strike, while the second killed seven al Qaeda leaders at a meeting, according to a US statement released at the time. One US official played down connections between the al-Rauf raid, the intercepted messages, and the sudden flurry of strikes on al Qaeda in Syria. Lt Col Karen Roxberry, a spokeswoman for CENTCOM, the US command responsible for both Afghanistan and Syria, said in a statement it was "not aware of a link" between the raid and the Idlib strikes. A US drone strike on October 15 targeted an al Qaeda cell in Idlib, Syria. Credit: Idlib and its Countryside Now Suhail Shaheen, a spokesman in Doha for the Taliban, who prefers the name the Islamic Emirate, told CNN the allegations were "not true." He said the government in Kabul had for the past two decades wanted "to create suspicion to make foreign forces stay," so they "will then stay in power and have billions to make their bank accounts bigger." Shaheen said the Emirate's agreement with the United States specified they would not permit Afghanistan to be used to attack the United States or its allies. "If we do, we create problems for ourselves, and there will be no peace in Afghanistan. War after war. It is against our interest." He said that after the deal with the US in Doha was signed, their military commanders were gathered together and that commitment was spelled out in a meeting, and then in a letter. A second letter was then sent, Shaheen said, in which their leadership said any Taliban member with foreigners in their ranks would be immediately fired and taken to court. He said that included fighters from neighbouring Pakistan. "Everybody," he said. A US Treasury report published in early January this year said al Qaeda was "gaining strength in Afghanistan while continuing to operate with the Taliban, under the Taliban's protection." The Taliban's relationship with al Qaeda has been the subject of differing assessments, with US officials at times accused by critics of playing up the threat in pursuit of greater military resources, and more recently playing it down ahead of the planned withdrawal. Al Qaeda promises 'war on all fronts' against America as Biden pulls out of Afghanistan Al Qaeda promises 'war on all fronts' against America as Biden pulls out of Afghanistan While many analysts believe the Taliban ultimately regrets harboring the terror group behind 9/11 and sparking the US invasion, they have in the past decade promoted Siraj Haqqani, an al Qaeda-affiliated insurgent who heads the Haqqani Network, to become the Taliban's military operations commander in 2015. The senior Afghan intelligence official said that several details about al-Rauf's time in Afghanistan showed his intimate connections to the Taliban leadership. One of his Taliban handlers, known as Zahed, was on a list of prisoners the Taliban requested be released as part of the earlier Doha peace talks, the official said. "At that time, we did not know the connection," the senior Afghan official said of the early 2020 releases. "It shows the sympathy of Taliban leadership for that person, who [was] working as a liaison between al-Qaida and Taliban." A UN report published in February said the "killing of several Al-Qaida commanders in Taliban-controlled territory underscores how close the two groups are." The report mentioned al-Rauf's death, but also the killing of a deputy leader of al Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent, Mohammad Hanif, on November 10, in Afghanistan's Farah Province. The report cites a UN "member state" as assessing Hanif "had been providing bomb-making training to Taliban insurgents." The UN report concludes: "Both appear to have been given shelter and protection by the Taliban." It adds there is "further evidence of close relations between the groups," citing the Taliban's request that the wife of a senior al Qaeda figure killed in a 2019 raid be included in the 2020 prisoner exchange with the Afghan government. The senior Afghan official declined to name the current al Qaeda leader in Afghanistan and said that technically Ayman al-Zawahiri remained the group's head since the death of Osama Bin Laden in 2011. "Our intelligence still suggests that al-Zawahiri is somewhere in the FATA area of Pakistan in that area," he said. "But we have no clear intelligence about his exact location."
  21. Around 240 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, the earth looked pretty different. It was a time when dinosaurs roamed freely and crocodiles coexisted alongside them. In fact, crocodiles are one of the only animals that are thought to have survived the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaur po[CENSORED]tion. They survived the mass extinction and thrived for hundreds of millions of years to come. Therefore, it’s safe to say, their history on earth is a long and mysterious one! They’re the large aquatic reptiles made famous by revered Australian legends like Crocodile Dundee, Paul Hogan, and the legendary Steve Irwin, but here are 10 interesting facts you may not know about the carnivorous creature that is the crocodile. 1. Did you know that there are 23 different species of crocodile that live on this planet? However, Australia is home to just two species – the freshwater crocodile (which is found nowhere else in the world) and also the estuarine crocodile. Despite their names, both of these species can live in fresh or salt water. Other species can be found in the tropics throughout Africa, Asia and the Americas. 2. Crocodiles are quite a versatile reptile which means they can live in a variety of environments. Some of these may include lakes, rivers, freshwater bodies, salt water and brackish water (a combination of salt and freshwater). 3. Like most reptiles, crocodiles are cold-blooded animals and prefer to take up residence in tropical areas close to wetlands. They cannot generate heat on their own, therefore they go into a period of long sleep (or aestivation, a similar state to hibernation) until the weather heats up again. 4. Although they have since been replaced by humans, crocodiles were once at the top of the food chain. Of course, we’re talking a long time ago – approximately 100 million years ago – during the Mesozoic Era. 5. The crocodile jaw is a thing of supreme power and force. Although the muscles in their jaw are quite weak and incredibly sensitive to touch, they have one of the strongest bites in the animal kingdom. For example, did you know that the saltwater crocodile has a bite nearly three times the forces of a lion or tiger? Impressive, right? 6. Perhaps one of the most fascinating facts about the crocodile species is in regard to their breeding. When a female crocodile lays eggs (of which there can be up to 60 at a time), the temperature of the nest where the eggs are laid actually determines the sex of the baby. If the temperature is less than 32 degrees Celsius, the baby crocodiles will be female and if it’s above that temperature, they will be male. 7. Ever heard the term ‘crocodile tears’? There’s an age-old myth that crocodiles cry when devouring their prey. And while technically crocodiles have glands that can produce tears, it’s not actually considered crying. Whilst eating, the crocodile swallows too much air which impacts with the lachrymal gland and forces tears to flow. 8. Here’s something that may surprise you: crocodiles actually eat without chewing. Their jaw operates in such a way that it cannot move sideways, therefore they can’t grind down on food in a traditional chewing motion. They will then swallow stones to help them digest and break down the food inside their stomach. 9. Speaking of food, the diet amongst crocodiles differs greatly depending on whether they are confined or not. In captivity, the large reptile will usually eat already killed animals such as mice, fish, rats, etc. However, crocodiles in the wild will usually go for crustaceans, frogs, birds, deer, etc. Although, we’re pretty sure anything is fair game for a crocodile in the wild… 10. Even though the colossal crocodile has been known to survive the dinosaur period and species-ending asteroids, contrary to po[CENSORED]r opinion, they are not immortal. Most crocodile species have a lifespan of approximately 40 years, however, large species like the saltwater and Nile crocodile have been known to live up to 80 – 100 years.
