  1. And yet phone benchmarking apps get a free pass. Don't get any bright ideas about your laptops, Samsung. Twitter user GaryeonHan and a legion of Samsung smartphone users (thanks to Android Authority) have compiled a list of over 10,000 apps whose performance has been reduced or throttled when Samsung's game optimizing app, GOS, is running in the background. Though strangely no phone benchmarking apps appear in the list. Funny that. What's allegedly happening is that Samsung's Game Optimizing Service (GOS) app, which optimizes game performance (to improve battery life and reduce heat) on Android phones, might be 'optimizing' things that aren't games. Users have complained that tons of apps and services, such as Netflix, Samsung Pay, and even the phone dialer have been running poorly whenever GOS is active. GOS seems to whitelist phone benchmarking apps like 3DMark and Geekbench from artificially limiting. So if you're running a benchmark, you might think there's nothing wrong or see any performance dip whatsoever unless, of course, you use an app that is affected. A Korean Youtuber found a way to trick GOS into seeing 3DMark as Genshin Impact and was, therefore, able to benchmark the throttling in action. It reduced its benchmark score by more than half when running on a Galaxy S22 Ultra. GOS is preinstalled on some Galaxy S21 and older phones, and there are reports that it is also preinstalled and non-removable on the new Galaxy S22, too.
  2. Perhaps not surprisingly, there are competitions that are extremely po[CENSORED]r elsewhere in the world, but that the typical American likely hasn’t heard of them at all. 24/7 Wall St. identified 20 of the most interesting, unusual, and regionally po[CENSORED]r of these. Some of these games, such as netball, handball -- not the handball you’re thinking of -- or Aussie rules football, bear many similarities to po[CENSORED]r American sports and often can trace their origins to these sports. Others on this list, such as Afghanistan’s national sport buzkashi, which is played with the headless carcass of a goat, are different altogether. Some of these sports, while hugely po[CENSORED]r where they are played, are niche in that they are only played in one place, and sometimes only during a single annual event. In these cases, such as the hyper-violent calcio fiorentino, the event is usually the cornerstone of a well-attended festival. Here are some of the most po[CENSORED]r carnivals from around the world. Not all of these sports are held in professional arenas -- many are held outdoors, on sawdust, and in muddy terrain. Others are held in official sports venues and are often locally po[CENSORED]r enough to sell out events to tens of thousands of fans. Many of these sports have some local po[CENSORED]rity in the United States, but if you want to see high-level competition for any of these sports, you'll likely need to buy a plane ticket. But these are the most po[CENSORED]r countries on the CDC's Do Not Travel list. THE SITE
  3. EU countries have granted Ukrainian refugees a far more generous offer than the UK's scheme - confirming they can stay in a chosen nation for three years. The Temporary Protection Directive will grant refugees automatic temporary residence in any EU country alongside access to education, healthcare, housing and jobs immediately for up to one year. The scheme prevents refugees having to apply via long asylum processes. If the conflict continues their status could be extended for a further two years. It is the first time the EU has ever invoked this procedure, and will be welcomed by many charities and campaigners as one million people have fled Ukraine since Russia's invasion last Thursday. Earlier this week, the UK Government were forced to bow down to mounting pressure and offer a better humanitarian scheme to Ukrainian refugees. On Sunday Boris Johnson promised to be "very generous" to refugees seeking safety. But failed to offer protection to people's parents, siblings or adult children. Ylva Johansson European Commissioner for Home Affairs said: “I must say that I’m so impressed by all the efforts from all the EU citizens who are working there as volunteers… [who] open their homes for people to come live with them. “This is a moment to be proud to be European, but this is also a moment for strong decisions.” Ms Johansson called the quick adoption of the protection rules a “historic result” and said “the EU stands united to save lives”. The European Commission has already promised at least 500 million euros (£414 million) in humanitarian aid for the refugees. Ms Johansson pointed to nations like Poland, where the po[CENSORED]tion has gone out of its way to be welcoming to the refugees, as an example for others to follow. “They need financial support now because they’re going to have to find accommodation for people to have to find schools for the children,” she said. The news comes as Putin claimed his invasion is "going according to plan", sparking fears of a huge humanitarian crisis. Putin accused Ukraine forces of taking "thousands of foreign citizens hostage" and using civilians as "human shields". He provided no evidence for these claims. As it stands, Brits who have elderly relatives and siblings caught up in the Ukraine crisis still cannot bring them to safety here in the UK. Downing Street has confirmed people living in the UK can bring “adult parents, grandparents, children over 18 and siblings” in addition to those who had previously been allowed. But those measures will not come into effect until Friday March 4. Family members of British nationals can only apply in Lviv, Ukraine; Rzeszow, Poland; Hungary, Moldova or Romania. THE SITE

  9. Fitbit received at least 174 reports of the watch’s overheating globally, with 118 reports of burn injuries. Fitbit Ionic has been recalled by the Google-owned company due to overheating issues that could potentially cause a burn hazard, a US regulator said on Wednesday. The recalling decision comes after Fitbit received more than 100 reports of burn injuries owing to overheating of the smartwatch. Launched back in September 2017, the Fitbit Ionic offered features including activity tracking as well as heart and sleep monitoring. About one million units of the Ionic smartwatch were sold in the US until December 2021, with an additional 693,000 sold globally including India. As a result of the recalling, Fitbit will issue a refund of $299 (roughly Rs. 22,700) once owners will return their Ionic watch to the company. It will also provide consumers with a discount code to offer 40 percent off on select Fitbit devices, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission noted in its announcement. Fitbit received at least 174 reports of the watch's overheating, with 118 reports of burn injuries that include two cases of third-degree burns and four of second-degree burns, the US commission said. “We received a very limited number of reports — the totals in the US regulator announcement represent less than 0.01 percent of units sold — of the battery in Fitbit Ionic smartwatches overheating, posing a burn hazard,” Fitbit said in a statement emailed to Gadgets 360. The company stated that the recall did not impact other Fitbit smartwatches or trackers. Fitbit stopped the production of Ionic in 2020. The smartwatch was launched in India at Rs. 22,990 in January 2018. Gadgets 360 asked Fitbit to confirm how Indian consumers can avail the refund, and the company responded by saying that the users impacted outside the US should visit help.fitbit.com/ionic for information on how to receive a refund. "The refund will be equivalent to USD $299 in local currency. We urge all Ionic users to participate," the company said. The recall is limited to four variants of the Fitbit Ionic that have the following model numbers: FB503CPBU, FB503GYBK, FB503WTGY, and FB503WTNV. Eligible consumers in the US can proceed for the refund by contacting Fitbit helpline at 888-925-1764 or visiting the help section on the company's website. User reports on the Fitbit Community forums suggest that the overheating issues with the Ionic watch started to emerge shortly after its launch in 2017. “Today my Fitbit Ionic burnt my wrist. I noticed I had a stinging feeling,” one of the affected users said in a forum post. This is notably not the first time when Fitbit is recalling one of its po[CENSORED]r wearables. In 2014, the company recalled its Force wristband after facing complaints of skin rashes and irritation. Fitbit also avoided recalling the Flex wristband despite getting similar skin irritation reports and said that it made some adjustments and put a warning that it could cause allergic reactions due to nickel.
  10. Not just an icon anymore Windos 11 is improving how Bluetooth devices are displayed on the Taskbar, with a new interactive overview of battery life and options to connect to these devices in an upcoming update. Since Windows XP in 2001, there's been a constant Bluetooth icon in the Taskbar that would show you options such as available devices, as well as a link to the Bluetooth Settings in the Control Panel. But with wireless devices more common than ever before in 2022, Microsoft has decided to make the process simpler by replacing this 20-year method with an overview of the devices that are paired to your PC, without having to leave the app or the desktop. This is yet another example of the company making processes easier for users in Windows 11, but there's still more work to do in this area, with features that macOS users have had for years. Analysis: From three clicks to one Connecting to wireless devices has never been as straightforward as connecting to a Wi-Fi network in Windows. Simply adding a Bluetooth section in Settings or the Control Panel felt unnecessary, especially with smartphones and Macs reducing the process to two steps. The Taskbar in Windows 11 has had a Quick Settings feature since its launch in October 2021, so you can directly access 'Focus' mode, audio settings, and more without leaving the app you were currently in. With Bluetooth being available in this panel as well, it will be very handy to those who have multiple devices connected to their PCs. This is rolling out to users who are on Windows Insider build 2567 and above. If you've not signed up to be a Windows Insider to help test early versions of Windows 11, this new and improved Bluetooth functionality will hopefully arrive later this year. It should be worth the wait, especially if you have multiple game controllers or headphones, it can help alleviate the confusion to be given a quick overview of what's not connected, and quickly resolve that. Having a battery status for each device will be a great help too in reminding users to charge them when needed. However, there's still more that can be done in this area. Other features such as switching between noise-canceling and equalizer modes for headphones could be a great help, similar to what Apple users have had on their Macs for a few years. But it's still a great step in the right direction to start with, and a much-needed feature in a time when many of us use Bluetooth devices almost every day for our PCs.
  11. Big caches are the new way to boost memory bandwidth Nvidia's next-generation Ada GPU architecture will reportedly receive a massive boost in L2 cache sizes, as shared by @harukaze5719 and @xinoassassin1 on Twitter. The new leak alleges L2 sizes have increased on the new architecture by 16x compared to Nvidia's current GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs, and are on par with AMD's Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs with Infinity Cache technology. The flagship Ada die, AD102, reportedly gets the biggest cache size of the entire lineup at an impressive 96MB (16MB per 64-bit memory controller), while the AD103 and AD104 die could receive 64MB of cache instead. AD106 will have 48MB and AD107 will come with the least amount of cache at 32MB. Nonetheless, even AD107's cache size dwarfs that of Nvidia's most powerful GPUs today running on the GA102 die that comes with just 6MB (512KB per 32-bit memory controller). It's not hard to understand why Nvidia is making this unorthodox move with its Ada architecture. Previous reports indicated that Ada could have up to 71% more cores than Ampere. Of course, with more cores, you need to increase memory bandwidth to ensure that each is constantly fed with data, and without going to a wider memory interface, improving bandwidth utilization with a larger cache is a good option. AMD was the first company to demonstrate the full potential of large internal caches on GPUs, introducing its RNDA2-based Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs. With RDNA2, AMD introduced its Infinity Cache, which added a massive L3 cache to the GPU along with the other L0, L1, and L2 caches. Compared to previous generations of Nvidia and AMD GPUs, these caches are much larger, with the top RDNA2 die possessing 128MB of Infinity Cache. In testing with GPUs such as the RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT, it was found that these huge cache sizes could completely alleviate bottlenecking the GPU's relatively weak 256-bit memory bus, which paled in comparison to Nvidia's RTX 3080 with a 320-bit bus and a 384-bit bus for the RTX 3090. Nvidia's RTX 3080 and 3090 are also running faster GDDR6X memory, while AMD has stuck to regular GDDR6 ICs. So despite the seemingly drastically underpowered memory configuration of the RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT, these GPUs were able to go toe-to-toe with Nvidia's counterparts thanks to the large pool of Infinity Cache. Ada will be the first time Nvidia has really taken a page out of AMD's playbook and will likely combat its higher core count requirements with bigger caches instead of purely increasing raw bandwidth with faster ICs and larger bus-widths. Not only is Nvidia allegedly using large L2 caches, but it's also apparently keeping its bus widths the same as current generation Ampere GPUs, according to the leak. This means that Nvidia will rely more on internal caches to keep memory bandwidth high, just like AMD. We recently saw the introduction of 21Gbps GDDR6X modules and new Samsung roadmaps for GDDR6+ and GDDR7. Nvidia may leverage those higher clocked ICs to gain even more memory bandwidth. On the other hand, AMD chose to stick with standard GDDR6 modules for the entirety of its RDNA2 lineup — with even the 6900 XT LC uses 18.5 GDDR6. Recent reports indicate that RDNA3 dies could have as much as 256MB to 512MB of infinity cache, which would be 2.7x and 5.4x as large as Ada's current L2 cache size projections. However, as with most caching architectures, there's a point of diminishing returns, and even a 512MB L3 cache may not radically improve performance over a 128MB cache. Regardless, things are shaping up to be quite interesting in the GPU space later this year.
  12. As well as graphics cards not being detected. An Elden Ring patch snuck out today, announced by FromSoftware in thread of updates on Twitter. It's a very small patch for a very large game, amounting to only 13.1MB. Don't expect anything game-changing, then. Well, not unless you've tangoed with a fire giant with a penchant for killing the game. That's one way to win a fight. And it's also one of the fixes tackled in patch 1.02.2. The next time you start scrapping with it, you should be in for a fairer fight, or at least won't find the game quitting on its own. The patch also fixes an issue where graphics cards weren't being used, which as you can probably imagine is not an optimal way to play Elden Ring. Not that even the best GPUs guarantee decent performance. Frame rate dips and stuttering continue to be an issue, regardless of what's in your PC. Even my 3080 Ti is having problems. And that's about it for the specifics, unfortunately. The last item on this very short list is "Fixed other bugs", which implies they weren't very big ones. There aren't any patch notes, just the tweet, so these fixes will have to remain a mystery for now. I'm lucky enough to have avoided running foul of bugs, so what I'm waiting for is optimisation and an end to the damn stuttering, which has, to be fair, been lessened since launch. It's not been fully excised yet, though. Thankfully, the team hasn't been silent on this, and an outline of how it plans to deal with performance issues was shared last week.

  15. A cargo ship carrying thousands of luxury cars has sunk off the Portuguese Azores archipelago, almost two weeks after it caught fire. The vessel was carrying about 4,000 vehicles made by Volkswagen Group - including Porsches and Bentleys - from Germany to the US. As it was being towed, the Panama-flagged Felicity Ace plummeted due to structural problems caused by the fire and rough seas, according to a port official. Joao Mendes Cabecas, the captain of the nearest port on the island of Faial, said: "When the towing started… water started to come in. "The ship lost its stability and sank." Some 22 crew members were evacuated when the fire broke out on 16 February. Mr Cabecas said no oil leak has been reported at this time, but there are concerns the fuel tanks could be damaged. The vessel is now at the bottom of the Atlantic at a depth of about 3,500m (2.17 miles). Volkswagen previously said the damage to the vehicles was covered by insurance. The company - Europe's largest car-maker - confirmed the ship had sunk. The value of what was lost was estimated at $155m (£116) by insurance experts. THE SITE

  18. The MediaTek Dimensity 8100 and Dimensity 8000 are built on TSMC’s 5nm process. MediaTek Dimensity 8100 and Dimensity 8000 chipsets were announced by the company on Tuesday. The company's new chipsets are aimed at the flagship segment and will go head-to-head with rival Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 SoC. The launch of the new chips comes four months after the debut of the 4nm MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC, and smartphones with this chipset are expected in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the chip manufacturer also announced the launch of the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 SoC, which is an upgraded version of the company's Dimensity 1200 chipset launched last year. The company revealed on Tuesday that the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 and Dimensity 8000 chipsets will feature four Cortex-A78 performance cores and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores, along with a Mali G610 MC6 GPU. The performance cores on the Dimensity 8100 offer 2.85GHz speeds, while the Dimensity 8100 offers up to 2.75GHz. The Dimensity 8100 and Dimensity 8000 are built on TSMC's 5nm process. Both chipsets feature MediaTek's HyperEngine 5.0 technology for efficiency and improved frame rates — a maximum of 120fps for MediaTek Dimensity 8100 and 140fps for the Dimensity 8000 SoC. Meanwhile, the chipsets also support LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage, according to the company. The chipsets feature the MiraVision 780 display engine and smartphones powered by these chipsets can support up to 168Hz refresh rate at full-HD+ (1,080x1,920 pixels) resolution, while the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 SoC will also support 120Hz refresh rate at WQHD+ (1,440x2,560 pixels) resolution. The Dimensity 8000 chipsets are powered by a five gigapixel-per-second ISP for fast HDR photo and video capturing, according to MediaTek. Both the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 and Dimensity 8000 chipsets will feature Imagiq 780 ISP with support for 200-megapixel cameras and HDR10+ video recording support at 4K resolution at 60fps. They will offer dual camera HDR video recording simultaneously on the front and rear camera, or two rear camera lenses. Similarly, both chipsets will offer 5G connectivity with an R16-ready 5G modem that offers 2CC carrier aggregation, and the company's UltraSave 2.0 power saving feature. However, like the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC, these chipsets do not support mmWave 5G connectivity. Both MediaTek Dimensity 8100 and Dimensity 8000 chipsets support Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, according to the company. MediaTek also announced the debut of the Dimensity 1200 SoC as a successor to the 6nm Dimensity 1200 chipset launched last year. The chipset features a high-performance ARM Cortex-A78 core clocked at 3GHz, three performance Cortex-A78 cores, and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores. Smartphone enthusiasts will not have to wait for long as the MediaTek Dimensity 8100, Dimensity 8000, and Dimensity 1300 chipsets are set to debut on smartphones in “the first quarter of 2022” from some of the “world's biggest smartphone brands,” according to the company.
  19. Windows 11 is struggling to get more users – what went wrong? A new report by AdDuplex reveals that Windows 11 is now installed on 19.3% of computers, suggesting that Microsoft is struggling to convince people to upgrade to its new operating system. While that number may seem initially impressive – after all, nearly 20% of all PCs is still a large number – it’s only a small increase of the 16.1% share AdDuplex reported the month earlier. Building momentum is incredibly important this early on in an operating system’s life, so the fact that upgrades are slowing down a few months after launch is going to be concerning for Microsoft. Meanwhile, Windows 10 21H1 is the most-used version of Windows with 27.5% share, a small drop from the previous month. Interestingly, Windows 10 21H2, which was released around the same time as Windows 11, has 21% market share. It seems that many Windows 10 users are upgrading to the newer version of Windows 10, rather than switching to Windows 11. That makes sense – many people would rather stick with what they know. It also highlights that Microsoft may not be making as convincing an argument for switching to Windows 11 as it needs to. The fact that older version of Windows 10, including Windows 10 20H2 on 17.9% and Windows 10 2004 on 7.9%, make up the bulk of the rest of the market, highlights the struggle Windows 11 faces. The data AdDuplex uses is from around 5,000 apps that use the AdDuplex v2 SDK on the Microsoft Store, and covers around 60,000 PCs. This means the survey only includes versions of Windows that come with the Microsoft Store (Windows 10 and Windows 11), so while this doesn’t give us a complete view of the operating system market, it does help us understand the po[CENSORED]rity of Windows 10 and Windows 11. Analysis: Why the Windows 11 hate? Since its launch, there seems to be quite a bit of negativity surrounding Windows 11, and this may be why Windows 10 users are hesitant to switch. When Microsoft announced Windows 11, many people were surprised. Not because of past comments by Microsoft that suggested that Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows released, but because Windows 10 still feels relatively modern. With the release of Windows 10 21H2, it’s also an operating system that continues to get new updates and features. For people using Windows 10 who are happy with the operating system, there doesn’t seem like a huge reason to switch to Windows 11. Windows 10 isn’t perfect, but that too might actually convince people to stick with the older OS. Microsoft had a rough patch where it released numerous Windows 10 updates that appeared to cause more problems than they fixed. This affected people’s confidence in Microsoft, and some may think if the company can’t get an operating system update right, what kind of problems would an entirely new operating system bring? Holding off from installing a new operating system as soon as it launches and sticking with your existing OS until early bugs and problems are fixed, is actually a pretty good idea. Once Microsoft corrects the Windows 11 problems (thankfully there aren’t too many) and addresses some of the complaints users have, we may see more Windows 10 users switch to Windows 11. Another valid reason why people may not upgrade to Windows 11 from Windows 10 is the fact that they simply can’t. Microsoft made having TPM a requirement for Windows 11, and this has meant that many perfectly capable PCs can’t actually officially run the new operating system. We can’t see Microsoft changing its position on this (in fact, it’s made life harder for people running Windows 11 on unsupported hardware), so many people won’t upgrade to Windows 11 until they get new devices, and that could be years from now. Unfortunately, there is a growing negativity about Windows 11 as well. Many of its detractors are very vocal online, which could make people wary of upgrading. Some of these grumbles are definitely valid, but I increasingly feel like some of the hate is undeserved. Sure, Windows 11 has some frustrating quirks at the moment – the reduced functionality of the taskbar is particularly baffling – but Microsoft is continuing to add features and fix issues. The new user interface may take some getting used to, but it feels fresh and modern. I’ve also found Windows 11 to run well, with boot times particularly improved. While I don’t love the operating system (Microsoft still struggles to make anyone feel particularly fond of its software), I don’t hate it either. Microsoft needs to counter the negative opinion people are forming of Windows 11 as quickly as possible, and show people why they gain from upgrading to the new operating system. What it certainly doesn’t want to happen is for Windows 11 to be spoken about in the same way people talk about Windows Vista or Windows 8. Those two versions are widely derided as embarrassing failures – a fate that Windows 11 doesn’t deserve.
  20. And the top-end laptop also gets a neat burgundy color. Ahead of Mobile World Congress, Samsung is announcing a new suite of premium Windows 11-based PCs under the Samsung Galaxy Book 2 (stylized "Book2") umbrella. The four new notebooks are the Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360, a convertible 2-in-1 with Intel's 12th Gen Core P-series processors; the Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro, a clamshell with P-series chips; the Samsung Galaxy Book 2 360, a consumer-grade convertible with Intel's 12th Gen U-series chips; and the Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Business, an enterprise portable. The goal, it seems, is to have a lineup of laptops with different form factors and levels of power, albeit it all at fairly premium price points. The Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 is the flagship, with both clamshell and 2-in-1 capabilities. It's the only laptop in the lineup to exclusively use a Core i7 processor. Its other differentiation is the lack of a USB Type-A port. Instead, Samsung has opted for a Thunderbolt 4 port and a pair of USB Type-C ports. It also features a 1080p webcam and a fingerprint reader on the power key. It will come in 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch sizes. The smaller version will be 11.5 mm (0.45 inches) thick, while the model with the larger screen will measure 11.9 mm thick (0.47 inches). Additionally, the Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 will come with the S Pen in the box. That will work on the laptop's 1080p Super AMOLED touch screen. If you like color, the Book 2 Pro 360 comes in three varieties: Silver, graphite, or an eye-catching burgundy. For those who prefer a standard clamshell, there's the Galaxy Book 2 Pro, which is thankfully a way simpler name than the other notebooks. It, too, will come in 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch sizes. The 15-inch version will be the only notebook in the consumer lineup with 5G, as well as Intel's discrete Arc graphics in some markets. Here, Samsung is trading out one of the USB-C ports for a Type-A port, suggesting that people who don't want touch screens will be more likely to desire legacy ports. It, too, gets a 1080p webcam, but its color options are more limited at just silver and graphite. The only non-Pro version, the Samsung Galaxy Book 2 360, uses Intel's U-series Core i5 and Core i7 processors, which should make it the most power efficient of the bunch. It gets a combination of the other two notebooks’ features, with a USB Type-A port and a Super AMOLED touchscreen. But apparently 1080p webcams are only for pros: this one steps down to 720p. Samsung's enterprise model, the Galaxy Book 2 Business, has a wide variety of specs that the company says will differ depending on which company you're in. That laptop has a 14-inch, 1080p screen, but no word of AMOLED like its consumer counterparts. It's a bit thicker at 0.77 inches, but that gets office workers more ports, including two USB-A ports to go along with Thunderbolt and USB-C. Like the 15.6-inch Galaxy Book Pro, this will have support for discrete graphics in the form of Nvidia's low-end MX570 A. It's notable that Samsung is sticking with 16:9 displays on its laptops. Many of the best ultrabooks now have a 16:10 or even 3:2, which are taller screens that make for less awkward tablet experiences. That would have been enticing to see on the Book 2 Pro 360, for instance. The Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 will start at $1,249.99, while the clamshell Book 2 Pro will start at $1,049.99. The non-pro Samsung Galaxy Book 2 360 will be cheaper, beginning at $899.99. No pricing has been announced for the business notebook. Pre-orders for the laptops start on March 18, and the company says they should arrive in stores on April 1, with the exception of the Galaxy Book 2 Business, which is expected to launch later in the spring.
  21. Info : It ain't much, but it's honest work. Elden Ring has a brutal difficulty curve, especially if you're charging headfirst into its major Legacy dungeons. The enemies and bosses there can crush you in a single hit or wear down your resources so fast that it can be tough to make progress if you're unprepared. And one of the simplest ways to prepare is by investing in your stats, for which you'll require lots and lots of runes from fallen foes. For much of the early game—which, remember, will be a good amount of time in this massive open world—you'll be starved of opportunities to level up. You'll get through your first few levels quick enough, but each time you do the rune cost rises, and pretty soon the manageable enemies you've been feasting on won't be enough. Thankfully, you don't have to play by the rules, slowly harvesting runes as you explore the world and fight your way through its dungeons. There are places all over the Lands Beyond where you can net yourself a mountain of runes, often with little risk, by exploiting certain abilities, enemy patterns or the terrain. Limgrave Limgrave is the first area you'll explore, and once you get Torrent you'll be able to ride across it pretty swiftly while avoiding most enemies, unless you want to beat them up. If you've got your steed, you might want to check out this farming spot shown off by PowerPyx on YouTube. The method only begins in Limgrave, but will actually take you to a much higher level area. They claim it'll net you about 300,000 runes per hour, which is enough for many, many levels at the beginning of the game, even if you only do it for 10 or 20 minutes. The catch is that this method will send you from Lingrave to a much higher level area, with enemies that will take you out very quickly. Magic builds will have an easier time, though it's still absolutely viable for melee characters. First you have to head to the Third Church of Marika in Limgrave—it's located east of the first few Sites of Grace. From there, you need to go northeast until you find a portal sitting in water. This is actually connected to a side quest that you'll get for a character later on, but meeting them first isn't required. The portal takes you to Greyoll's Dragonbarrow, a high-level area in the north of Caelid that features one of the game's strangest characters, who you'll see right behind you when you arrive, along with a site of grace. Watch out for the big creature on the stairs in front of you as you leave, as you won't want to mess with it. Outside, you'll find some small, relatively weak enemies, and beyond them a bridge with another site of grace next to it. Grab the site of grace if you want, but don't cross the bridge. Instead, go back to the small enemies, because they are who you'll be farming. These little guys go down fast, and while a magic build will be helpful here, melee characters can still stagger them or employ stealth. The video claims you'll get 637 runes per kill, and there are quite a few of them, but upon testing it I found I was actually getting considerably more: 1094 runes per kill. The nearby site of grace will then let you keep respawning them. Just don't give them an opportunity to retaliate, as they can kill low level characters in a hit. Since you're already in Dragonbarrow anyway, you might as well hit up another cheesy farming spot nearby. This one is courtesy of TagBackTV on YouTube, and you don't need to get in any fights to fill your rune coffers. You'll need to make your way over to the Lenne's Rise Site of Grace, southeast of the one you should have activated next to the bridge earlier. You still don't want to cross that bridge, so instead double back a bit and take the route that will bring you to the smaller bridge to the east. Make sure to do this during the day, as there's a boss that appears on the bridge at night. There are a few enemies to avoid and some poison traps, but the Site of Grace is right at the end of the bridge, so it doesn't matter if you take a bunch of damage. Activate the Site of Grace and heal up, and then head down the path that takes you under the bridge you've been avoiding. Close to the top of the path is a trap—a magical boulder that will only appear when you're in front of it. Dash out of the way of the boulder and it will continue its trajectory, squashing something below and earning you a not-too-shabby 1952 runes. Then teleport back to the Site of Grace and do it all over again. You can also get another big payday by taking on the boss on the small bridge. You want to wait until after you've got the Lenne's Rise Site of Grace. Start there, then ride over to the boss at the other end of the bridge. Don't fight him, though. Instead, get him to chase you through all the poison traps. If you keep him following you, the poison will eventually kill him, giving you an impressive haul: 42,000 runes. This is just a one-time thing, but nice nonetheless. Liurnia Once you've conquered Stormveil Castle, the first Legacy dungeon, you'll probably have quite a lot of runes in your possession. But can you ever really have enough? Luckily there's a farming spot just up the road. You can find the spot near the Liurnia Highway North (past Stormveil Castle) Site of Grace, and you don't really need to do much here, since you can gain runes while AFK. Right next to the checkpoint are a bunch of soldiers fighting spiritual attackers and one giant (which you need to run over with your horse to trigger). The giant will smash most of the soldiers pretty quickly and grant you about 43 runes per kill. It's not much, but if you want to mindlessly do it while watching Netflix it could be useful. If you're in the area, you might as well. Raya Lucaria Academy is the next Legacy dungeon you'll encounter, and if you've got a strength build and a penchant for helping your fellow Tarnished, you can net yourself a very nice haul by farming its boss. Our features producer Nat used this method, with assistance from PCG contributor Samantha Greer and her massive sword. As Nat explains, "the big bad of the Academy, Rennala, is ridiculously easy to stagger," which means strong characters can toss her around like a rag doll. If that's your build, you should have an easier time with her, so you might want to use your skills to help other players and continue raking in the runes. Caelid If you've tried PowerPyx's farming method you'll already have visited Caelid by travelling through a portal. And you might want to stick around, as there's a very handy farming spot in this area that, like the Liurnia Highway North Site of Grace, allows you to get runes while just sitting around and chilling, and in much greater quantities. You'll need to reach the Impassable Greatbridge in the far south first. The best route to take isn't from the Site of Grace you unlocked in Caelid earlier, as it's far away and covered in enemies that will do you in quickly. Instead, head east from Limgrave, and then south, following the road through Caelid. You might as well pick up the Caelid map and unlock Sites of Grace on your way. Near the Impassable Greatbridge Site of Grace is a battle between soldiers and giant demon dogs. They'll start fighting the moment you approach them, and from there you can just sit back and relax. I recommend perching on the rocks next to the damaged wall, as you get a good view and you'll be out of danger. The soldiers will net you fewer than 200 runes each, but there are loads of them, while the dogs will give you 313. The soldiers always win the fight, but you can prolong it by dragging in a few other dogs that are hanging out just north of the battlefield. You should walk away with 2,000-3,000 runes per run, and with the Site of Grace right next to it, you can repeat the battle almost immediately. Just watch out for the soldiers on the tower next to you, as they will shoot you with their crossbows. There's some loot at the top of the tower, but you can ignore them if you want, as they won't be able to hit you if you're past the big fire, which you will be if you're sitting on the rock. With the exception of the Liurnia farming spots, all of these can be attempted as soon as you've got Torrent to carry you around quickly, giving you a ridiculous supply of runes right from the start. That should make getting through Stormveil and defeating its lords a lot easier. And keep checking back, as we'll be adding more locations as we discover them.
