  1. Roku has had to roll back the recent Roku OS 10.5 update amidst complaints that it stopped po[CENSORED]r streaming apps from functioning, with reports ranging from lagging playback to being outright unable to stream content across several po[CENSORED]r apps. As reported by SlashGear, Roku had to reverse the update on its streaming devices, so that customers could resume watching content on the likes of Netflix, Disney Plus and Prime Video. The company has since confirmed it is working towards a solution, though there's still no word on when Roku OS 10.5 will be fit for purpose. As pointed out in the above tweet, Roku has pinpointed the issue to be most prevalent on older Roku TV and Roku Ultra devices. If users of these devices have been experiencing issues with the 10.5 update, the company has encouraged them to manually roll back to the 10.0 version. Users can do so by accessing the Roku OS settings menu. From there, go to System, followed by System Update, and finally Check Now. Affected users should see the option to roll back to the most stable version, and resume watching their favorite content until Roku has its latest update in working order. Analysis: A rare mishap? We were honestly quite surprised to learn about this Roku OS update blunder. The company isn't really prone to widespread errors like this. In fact, the Roku OS experience overall is typically one of the most stable and responsive across all major smart TV operating systems. Roku has been on a roll lately, benefiting from recent support from Funimation, HBO Max and a Vudu merger that saw a huge update to its library of entertainment. News of the Roku OS 10.5 update disaster has been poorly timed, what with Black Friday sales in full swing at the time of writing. If you do choose to pick up a Roku Black Friday deal, be aware that you may run into the same issues as highlighted above if you're using the latest software, meaning you might have to stick with the 10.0 update for the time being.
  2. The AMD Ryzen 9 5950X is absolutely one of the best high-performance desktop processors that you can purchase today, which is why is has spent considerable time on our Best CPU for gaming list. Though its spotlight is now being overshadowed a bit by the newly launched Intel Core i9-12900K, the Ryzen 9 5950X still packs a mighty punch with 16 cores and 32 threads of Zen 3 goodness. The Ryzen 9 5950X has a $799 MSRP and is usually on sale for around $750. However, Amazon is currently selling the flagship Zen 3 desktop processor at an all-time low of $719. In addition, if you have a Micro Center nearby, you can save an additional $20 at a price of $699.99. In other words, these are among the best Black Friday CPU deals that we've seen so far. While the Ryzen 9 5950X is one of the best CPUs for gaming, it's also a beast in productivity tasks thanks to its solid multi-threaded performance. The processor has a base clock of 3.4 GHz and features a maximum boost frequency of 4.9 GHz. Built on TSMC's 7nm FinFET process node, you'll find 8MB of L2 cache and a staggering 64MB of L3 cache. Despite its overachieving specs, the Ryzen 9 5950X has a relatively tame TDP of just 105 watts. The Ryzen 9 5950X still sets the bar extremely high for desktop processor power efficiency compared to the computing Core i9-12900K but comes up short regarding pricing. Even with its new low price of $699 at Micro Center, the Ryzen 9 5950X is still over $100 more expensive than the $589 Core i9-12900K. However, that price difference can be easily erased when you factor in the costs of high-end Z690 motherboards and DDR5 memory modules (if you want the best performance). In any case, the Ryzen 9 5950X remains a standout flagship processor that pairs nicely with the best X570 motherboards available on the market. With the potent combination, you'll have a rig that will be just as capable of handling the most demanding AAA games (when hooked up with one of the best GPUs) as it is tackling productivity tasks. Best AMD Ryzen 9 5950X Deals These are the best prices on the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X right now.

  4. The Ford Ranger, the best-selling pick-up truck in the UK, has been reinvented for its fourth generation with new powertrains, a bold redesign and a revamped cabin. The Ranger has been on sale in its current form since 2011 yet remains hugely po[CENSORED]r. With 13,097 units sold in 2020, it was the fifth most po[CENSORED]r light commercial vehicle in the UK and the only pick-up in the top 10. Order books for the new version will be opened in late 2022, with pricing to be confirmed closer to that time. The new-look Ranger has been styled with nods to Ford’s American-market F-150 large pick-up and new Bronco SUV. It’s 50mm wider, giving it a broader stance, which is enhanced by a larger radiator grille with a horizontal bar that incorporates the Ford badge and extends across the front to the new “C-clamp” daytime running lights. The new tailgate design features the Ranger name stamped into the metal, while the sides now have slightly more pronounced wheel arches and now feature an integrated step on either side of the rear bumper to improve access into the loadbed. LED lights are available for the first time at both ends. The current 2.0-litre diesel engine is retained, remaining architecturally the same with only slight modifications for cooling. There will be two single-turbocharged variants and a twin-turbocharged one, the power ratings for which are still to be confirmed. A new 3.0-litre diesel V6 has been added to the ranks, too, and while it has yet to be officially detailed, it will no doubt tout performance statistics to trump the 210bhp and 367lb ft of torque currently available in today’s most powerful Ranger. A turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine will also be sold in some markets. Ford has also confirmed that the new Ranger will be available with an electrified drivetrain, although it has offered no further details on specification or timeframe. The company will make its European commercial vehicle line-up zero-emissions-capable by 2024, so a plug-in hybrid is the most likely format for the Ranger, and various reports suggest it will be based around the 2.3-litre Ecoboost engine. New five- and six-speed manual gearboxes replace the current units, plus there’s a revised 10-speed automatic that’s lighter and has tighter ratios to improve towing capability at lower revs. The gearshift itself is now a short-throw “e-shifter” with an electronic parking brake that will enable the Ranger to gain more driver assistance systems and semi-autonomous driving features in the future. For the first time, Ford will offer two different versions of four-wheel drive in the Ranger: a basic system offering on-the-fly manual selection of four-wheel-drive mode and a more advanced, electronically controlled on-demand system. A choice of body types and trim levels mirroring the current range will be available, including the Ranger Raptor performance variant and plusher models (such as the po[CENSORED]r Wildtrak) with premium soft-touch materials inside and a 10.0in or 12.0in portrait-orientated touchscreen with the latest version of Ford’s Sync4 infotainment system. A fully digital instrument cluster allows drivers to customise the information shown in front of them and adapts its display to suit the six new driving modes (previously only available in the Raptor). However, many of the off-roading controls are now found in the touchscreen, and there’s a dedicated screen view for off-roading that includes data on the driveline, steering angle, vehicle pitch and roll angles alongside other useful information and controls. 5. French footballer Karim BenzemaIMAGE SOURCE,AURELIEN MEUNIER Image caption, French footballer Karim Benzema lost his place in the national team over the scandal France and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been found guilty of conspiring to blackmail a fellow French footballer with a sex tape. A judge handed Benzema a one-year suspended jail term and ordered him to pay a €75,000 (£63,000; $84,000) fine. Benzema, 33, was one of five people put on trial last month over an attempt to extort Frenchman Mathieu Valbuena. The scandal has stunned the football community in France and both players lost their national team places. The case dates back to June 2015, when the two footballers were at a French training camp. At the camp, Benzema put pressure on Valbuena to pay off the blackmailers, whom he had conspired with to act as an intermediary, prosecutors said. Benzema has always denied the allegations and insisted he was only trying to help Valbuena get rid of the compromising video. The player has since returned to the France team and is expected to start for Real Madrid on Wednesday night when they play FC Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League. Benzema was not present in court in Versailles for the verdict, nor was Valbuena who plays for Greek club Olympiakos. Four of Benzema's co-defendants in the trial were also found guilty on Wednesday. They were handed jail sentences ranging from 18 months suspended to two-and-a-half years in prison. Benzema's lawyers said they would appeal his conviction. "The reaction is ultimately an angry one to this judgment which is perfectly contradictory," his lawyer, Sylvain Cormier, told reporters outside court. But when delivering the verdict, the judge said Benzema had "implicated himself personally, through subterfuge and lies, to convince his teammate to submit to the blackmail". Benzema made a surprise comeback to the French national team in May, five years after he was exiled from the side when the allegations first surfaced in 2015. But last month, the French football federation said a guilty verdict would not necessarily jeopardise Benzema's position in the national side. Since being called back by France manager Didier Deschamps, Benzema has been in prolific form, scoring nine times in 13 games for his country. He's also scored 10 goals this season for his club, Real Madrid, who are yet to comment on the verdict. For his performances on the pitch, Benzema was named a candidate for the Ballon d'Or footballer of the year award which will be announced next week. What is this case about? It began in 2015 when Valbuena, now 37, asked a man in Marseille, Axel Angot, to upload the contents of his mobile phone to a new device. Mr Angot found sexually explicit material on the phone. He and another defendant in the trial, Mustapha Zouaoui, are accused of trying to blackmail Valbuena by threatening to make the tape public. Mr Zouaoui told reporters he had shared the tape, but there had never been an attempt to extort money. Valbuena described being approached by another defendant, Younes Houass, who told the court he had warned the player about the issue without asking for money. When the footballer went to the police, they set up a sting operation involving an undercover agent. Prosecutors said another defendant was then brought into the scam - Karim Zenati, who is a childhood friend of Benzema. At this point, Benzema was asked to act as a "middleman" in the scheme, prosecutors said. In October 2015, Benzema approached his fellow France player in his room at the national team's training camp. Benzema said he had merely tried to help his teammate dispose of the x-rated video, warning him: "Be careful, Math, they're big, big thugs." He then offered to put him touch with someone he could trust - his childhood friend, Mr Zenati. Police were by now tapping their phone calls and recorded Benzema telling his friend: "He's not taking us seriously." Mr Zenati is said to have replied: "We're here to sort it out; if he doesn't want that he'll have to deal with the piranhas." Giving evidence at the start of the trial, Valbuena said he had never considered handing over money to stop the video getting out. Unlike his former teammate, Valbuena has not played for France since the scandal began. Testifying during the trial, Valbuena told the court that football was his life. "I knew if that video got out it would make things difficult with the French team," he said. Link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-59399701

  8. New LG TVs now support the cloud gaming service GeForce NOW, a move destined to make LG's already gamer-friendly screens even more appealing. The game-streaming service is coming to the webOS platform used on 2021 LG TVs on November 19, the company announced Thursday. The app is technically in beta, but should be fully "functional" and available through the LG content store on recent LG 4K OLED, QNED Mini LED and NanoCell TVs. If you have an LG TV that fits that description, we'd recommend looking for the app after that date, though LG is yet to share a complete list of screens getting support. We expect new LG TVs will be prioritized, particularly the LG C1 OLED and LG G1, though the budget LG A1 and LG B1 models should get in on the action too. “LG customers are expecting the best when it comes to gaming on a large screen,” said Lee Sang-woo, senior vice president of corporate business strategy at LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “Partnering with NVIDIA to bring GeForce NOW to LG TV owners is a sign of our commitment to deliver the best gaming experience on LG TVs running webOS.” Nvidia is on a roll GeForce NOW has been a key selling point of the Nvidia Shield TV streaming device, being the only TV-adjacent device to support the platform until now. GeForce NOW has been available on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android for many years now, but it's been notably absent from built-in smart TV platforms. This announcement should certainly raise the service's profile. It's worth noting that GeForce NOW isn't, technically, a game marketplace in the same way as Google Stadia, where you have to buy the Stadia version of a title to play it through the service. With GeForce NOW, you sign in to your Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG or Uplay account to lift games you've bought there, streaming them through the service – if GeForce NOW supports them. The service has a growing roster of great games, such as Apex Legends, the Assassin's Creed and Hitman franchises, and more. It recently got support for Dragon Age: Inquisition, Battlefield 1 Revolution, and Mirror’s Edge Catalyst from publisher EA too – alongside Crysis Remastered given to subscribers for free. But it's also a huge feather in LG's hat – offering another key gaming portal over the likes of Sony, Panasonic and Samsung. LG's support for Nvidia G-Sync and FreeSync had already made it a smart choice for PC gamers, while its TV ranges have offered extensive HDMI 2.1, VRR, and ALLM support before much of the competition. Not to mention LG's support for Dolby Vision gaming, making LG TVs a shoe-in for those pairing their screen with an Xbox Series X. For anyone looking for the best gaming TVs then, especially in the Black Friday TV deals going on this month, LG looks to offer not just capable gaming screens, but a platform that's being continually updated to service players and their platforms.
  9. Alder Lake's arrival heralded the opening salvo of Intel's brutal price war on AMD's Ryzen 5000 chips, and the Core i7-12700K is the perfect example of Intel's new bare-knuckle approach to pricing. At $409, the 12700K thoroughly beats the $390 Ryzen 7 5800X and even unseats the pricey $550 Ryzen 9 5900X, all while delivering essentially the same gaming performance as the fastest gaming chip on the planet, Intel's own $589 flagship Core i9-12900K — but for $180 less. As a result, the Core i7-12700K joins our list of the best CPUs for gaming. It's also exceedingly competitive in applications, assuring a top ranking in our CPU Benchmark hierarchy. The 12700K comes on the heels of Intel's other surprising victories against much pricier chips, like the $589 Core i9-12900K vs $799 Ryzen 9 5950X and the $289 Core i5-12600K vs $390 Ryzen 7 5800X (click the links for the full rundown), proving that Alder Lake truly punches above its pricing weight class. Surprisingly, the majority of these gains come even without the advantages of Alder Lake's new next-gen connectivity technologies that bring big increases in throughput via DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 interfaces. You can use standard DDR4 memory and PCIe devices to unlock superior performance over AMD's aging AM4 platform, but DDR5 will give you an extra performance kicker in some applications. Intel's platform is also prepared for the inevitable transition to PCIe 5.0, but that brings higher motherboard pricing. That reduces (but doesn't eliminate) Intel's chip pricing advantage, at least until B- and H-series boards arrive in the coming months. Intel is the first to support DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 on the desktop, and the company combines that tech with another first for desktop PCs — Alder's new hybrid x86 design represents the company's most disruptive architectural shift in a decade. Alder Lake combines big and fast Performance cores (P-cores) with clusters of small and powerful Efficiency cores (E-cores) that chew through background processes. The Golden Cove architecture powers the 'big' P-cores while the 'little' E-cores come with the Gracemont architecture, with both providing much-needed IPC improvements to Intel's core designs. The 'Intel 7' process debuts with Alder Lake, finally ending Intel's misery on the 14nm node after six long years that ultimately cost the company its performance crown to AMD. We previously knew this 'Intel 7' manufacturing tech as 10nm Enhanced SuperFin, but Intel recently renamed its process nodes to match industry nomenclature. Technically, this is the second generation of Intel's 10nm process, but it's a first for desktop PCs. For now, Alder Lake consists of three high-end overclockable K-series models, along with their graphics-less KF counterparts that are slightly less expensive, with more models to come in the future. The P-cores are hyper-threaded, while the E-cores only have a single thread, leading to what we would normally consider as non-standard thread counts. The Core i7-12700K comes with eight P-cores and 4 E-cores, for a total of 20 threads, slotting in between the 16-core 24-thread Core i9-12900K and the 10-core 16-thread Core i5-12600K. There is a catch, though. Alder Lake's new heterogeneous design requires special accommodations to unlock the best performance: Performance-sensitive work executes best on the P-cores, while the E-cores are best for background and threaded workloads, but ensuring that the right workloads land on the correct cores requires operating system intervention. The Alder Lake chips work with both newer and older versions of Windows, but Windows 11 unlocks the best performance because it supports Intel's new Thread Director. The tech provides the operating system with information that assists in assigning work to the correct cores. Alder Lake's performance is still competitive in Windows 10, but you might encounter wayward performance and/or variability, meaning some workloads will be slower at times due to unoptimized thread scheduling. However, you can rectify those issues in Windows 10 with various utilities, like the always-po[CENSORED]r Process Lasso. Conversely, Alder Lake is incredibly impressive in Windows 11 and takes the lead over AMD in gaming and most workloads, and by large margins. In other words, for worry-free class-leading performance, go with Windows 11 and Alder Lake. You'll get similarly impressive performance with Windows 10, but it will require a bit more manual intervention in a few applications. Intel's previous-gen Rocket Lake chips came with the same number of cores for both the Core i7 and i9 models, leaving little difference between the two models. However, the Core i7 12700K has four fewer E-cores than the Core i9-12900K and a 300 MHz lower boost clock, marking the return of meaningful segmentation between the Core i7 and i9 lineups. That segmentation is apparent in lightly- and heavily-threaded productivity applications, with the 12900K earning its higher price tag in those areas. But as you'll see in our benchmarks below, the 12700K offers essentially the same performance in gaming, making it the new high-end champion for performance addicts, while the Core i5-12600K remains the best mid-range CPU for gaming. Intel Alder Lake-S Core i7-12700K Specifications and Pricing Intel is only bringing its most expensive chips from the Core i9, i7, and i5 families to the retail market for now, but it is also shipping 28 more models to OEMs for prebuilt systems that arrive early next year. Intel isn't sharing details yet, but those models will eventually come to retail at an unspecified time. We have deep-dive coverage of the Alder Lake SoC design and core microarchitectures here, along with a broader overview in our Alder Lake all we know article. Additionally, Intel has removed its 'TDP' (Thermal Design Point) nomenclature from the spec sheets, and now assigns a Processor Base Power (PBP) value in its place. The company also added a secondary Maximum Turbo Power (MTP) value to the spec sheets to represent the highest power level during boost activity. You can read more about that change here.
  10. The latest entry into Ferrari’s ultra-exclusive Icona model series is the Daytona SP3, a limited-run mid-engined V12 roadster that pays tribute to one of the company’s best-known motorsport victories. It’s named in reference to the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, at which Ferrari achieved a one-two-three finish with its legendary 330 P3/4, 330 P4 and 412 P racers – a highlight of what Ferrari calls “the golden era of closed wheel racing and an enduring reference point for generations of engineers and designers”. Ferrari will build 599 examples – 100 more units than the Monza duo – priced at €2 million (£1.68m) including taxes. Priority will go to owners of the SP1 and SP2, with deliveries getting underway in late 2022, and unlike those two speedster models – which are not road legal in certain regions due to the lack of a windscreen – Ferrari says the SP3 is street-legal everywhere. The Daytona SP3 is the first road-going Ferrari to feature a mid-mounted 12-cylinder engine since the LaFerrari hybrid hypercar bowed out in 2018, and with the output of the 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 boosted to 829bhp and 514lb ft, it’s the most powerful non-electrified model that Maranello has yet produced. Engine upgrades over the 812 Competizione extend to a modified intake and exhaust (for an “astonishing soundtrack”), lightweight titanium conrods, reduced-friction piston pins and a lighter, rebalanced crankshaft. Mated to a quicker-shifting version of the 812 Competizione’s seven-speed automatic gearbox, the V12 promises a “torque curve that rises rapidly” all the way up to its 9500rpm redline, giving a 0-62mph time of 2.85sec and a top speed of 211mph making the Daytona SP3 the joint-fastest Ferrari road car yet. The references to 1960s race cars extend beyond the mechanicals, with the Daytona SP3 having a characteristically aerodynamically optimised design that blends elements of Ferrari’s historic designs with cues from current models. 11. Sudan's ousted Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok is to be reinstated, after being placed under house arrest during a military coup last month. All political detainees will be released as part of a new agreement between the military, civilian leaders and ex-rebel groups, mediators said. On 25 October, Sudan's military had declared a state of emergency and dissolved the civilian leadership. It sparked weeks of mass protests in which at least 40 people have died. The deal was reached late on Saturday night, and is to be signed into action on Sunday, the head of Sudan's Umma Party, Fadlallah Burma Nasir, confirmed. Mr Hamdok has agreed to the terms so that further bloodshed can be avoided, Reuters news agency reports, citing a source close to him. His office said restrictions on his movement had been lifted and that the security forces outside his house had left, AFP reports. The group of mediators, which included academics, journalists and politicians, released a statement outlining the terms of the agreement, which said the rules governing the transition towards democracy would be restored. Sudan's military and the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), a loose coalition of civilian groups, have been in a fractious power-sharing arrangement since August 2019, after long-time leader Omar al-Bashir was overthrown amid mass protests. EXPLAINER: Sudan coup: A simple guide ANALYSIS: How the army is gambling with Sudan's future VOICES: How Sudan's generals betrayed my generation That arrangement was thrown into crisis last month when military leader, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, dissolved the civilian arm of the government and arrested its leaders. He had been due to step down as chairman of the governing council this month, when a civilian chosen by the FFC would become the head of state. Gen Burhan, who appointed himself head of a new ruling council, insists the army's action was not a coup. He said he acted to prevent a civil war that was threatening to erupt because political groups had been inciting civilians against the security forces. Across many cities, including the capital, Khartoum, anti-coup protesters put up makeshift barricades and burned piles of tyres, angry that their already-fragile path to democracy had been hijacked. The army responded violently, and are accused of shooting protesters. One faction of the FFC has rejected the new deal, with demonstrations on Sunday going ahead as planned. Link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-59364349 The international community condemned the coup and demanded the release of political prisoners. The World Bank froze its aid to Sudan, and the African Union (AU) suspended the country's membership of the bloc.

  14. It looks like the wheels are finally moving on the Apple Car project. The company has decided to press ahead with development on a fully autonomous driving system and, despite previous forecasts, is now targeting a 2025 release. As per a recent Bloomberg report, strategy chief Kevin Lynch has opted to shift away from plans to create a vehicle with limited self-driving capabilities to instead focus on an Apple Car that requires zero driver intervention. Apple has reportedly set an internal target to release a road-worthy vehicle within the next four years, though insiders have suggested that window is subject to expansion should the company be unable to develop the desired autonomous technology before 2025. We know that Apple still hasn't nailed down an automotive manufacturer to partner with on the project, though, and the question of which car brand to do business with has been the major subject of conversation – and controversy – around the Apple Car vision. For instance, we've previously reported on ongoing negotiations between Apple and Hyundai, Kia and even LG Electronics, though no deal has yet to see the light of day – publicly, at least. Of course, there's every chance that the tech giant won't ever find a suitable collaborator on its Apple Car plans. It's no wonder, though, that the big car brands have seemed reluctant to become a bit-part supplier – in the same way Foxconn is to Tesla – on a vehicle that would ultimately bear the Apple name. But Apple is well aware of that fact. As a consequence, we've seen more recent reports hinting that the company may be prepared to shoulder the entire development process on its own – similar to the approach taken by Elon Musk's Tesla. This shift towards in-house development would corroborate Bloomberg's claims regarding Apple's re-tooled focus on creating an innovative autonomous technology base, the likes of which the auto industry has never seen before. In fact, Apple's new plans are so ambitious, that Bloomberg claims the company is now aiming to develop a car with no steering wheel or pedals, and an iPad-like infotainment system in the center of the cabin. It's clear, then, that Apple's pivot away from convention may indeed prove the company's capacity for innovation beyond the computing and mobile industries – but a 2025 target is more than a little ambitious, in our opinion.
  15. Raspberry Pi clusters are a fun way to experiment without investing in full-sized equipment. But why make a cluster with a regular Pi when you could take things even smaller with a Pi Zero? That’s exactly what maker Ivan Kuleshov has done with this impressive Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W cluster project. The project relies on a Cluster HAT and Raspberry Pi 4 with 3GB of RAM. If that caught your attention, it should—the Pi 4 doesn’t come with a 3GB edition. This is a custom mod from Kuleshov who apparently removed the original 8GB RAM module from the Pi 4 and soldered it to a CM4. Kuleshov explained that the Pi Zero 2 W boards are connected via a USB socket. Software-wise, he’s experimenting with a system called OpenFaaS. This is a serverless tool that lets users manage things like Python functions across clusters. Perhaps the most glaring question about this project is, what’s it for? Use cases for a Pi Zero 2 W cluster are admittedly limited, but the best Raspberry Pi projects are the ones you can make, not necessarily should make. So when asked what the purpose of the project was, Kuleshove responded, “For contemplation.”
  16. What is it? First, it was the manual gearbox that fell by the wayside. Then it was rear-wheel drive. So your only choice for a BMW M4 Convertible today is a four-wheel-drive automatic. And you know what? That’s great. The powersliding enthusiast can still buy a rear-drive coupé, or just put the xDrive system in rear-wheel drive mode, and the purist is likely to be catered for by the upcoming M2. What you’re left with is a drop-top M4 in the spec that most people were going to order anyway. The big news with the convertible M4, or to give it its full name, the M4 Competition M xDrive Convertible, is the same as with the regular 4 Series Convertible: gone is the metal folding roof. Instead, you get a fabric top. You might hope that saves weight, and BMW does claim the roof itself is 40% lighter than the old model’s. However, because the 4 Series has grown so much and gained that four-wheel drive system, the whole car is actually heavier than before, weighing a portly 1920kg. That’s also 145kg more than an M4 xDrive Coupé. More so than the weight, the fabric roof benefits the styling. Since the boot no longer needs to hold three metal roof sections, the whole rear deck can be lower, more shapely and more like the coupé. The roof itself can also have a more attractive shape. Indeed, in the metal, it’s quite an elegant shape and a lot sleeker than the slightly saloonish old model. And yes, it has The Grille. Has enough time passed yet that we can admit it looks quite good? The fabric roof also enables more boot space – up to 300 litres when the top is folded, 80 more than in the old model. When the roof is up, that increases to 385 litres. As with most convertibles, the majority of the additional weight comes from bracing to get back some of the fixed-roof equivalent's torsional rigidity. As such, the M4 has an aluminium shear panel in the front-end structure, underfloor bracing elements and a rear axle subframe with a rigid connection to the body. Power is provided, as in all other M3 and M4 versions, by the familiar 3.0-litre straight six with 503bhp at 6250rpm and 479lb ft at 2750-5500rpm. Despite the weight, it still powers to 62mph in a faintly ridiculous 3.7sec. Superficially, it feels very similar to any other M3 or M4. You’re looking at the same dashboard, and the beautifully made and user-friendly interior and iDrive system; you’re sitting in the same brilliantly supportive but slightly silly carbon bucket seats (more normal seats with an Airscarf-type system are standard); and there is the same firm ride and relatively high level of road noise. It’s still a car you would be very happy to use every day, though, and having a fabric roof rather than a metal one changes very little in that respect. You would be hard-pressed to notice the 0.2sec penalty in 0-62mph acceleration compared with the coupé, because it feels just as unusably accelerative. The xDrive system is also perfectly integrated. Leave everything in Comfort mode and traction is absolute, but engage M Dynamic mode and, particularly on a cool autumn day, it will feel as rear-wheel drive as you could ever want on the road. Out of tight corners, a wiggle of the hips can be enjoyed with total confidence because it’s nice and progressive, and you’re never on your own. As with other xDrive M cars, you can turn the stability control all the way off and put it in rear-wheel drive mode, but given how playful it already is in the halfway mode, that’s something best left for the track. Where the M4 convertible can come undone is on particularly uneven roads. Here, you can feel the lack of torsional stiffness as the steering column feels like it’s moving about and the whole car gets messily deflected by bumps in a way that the hard-top version doesn’t. The steering precision and feedback that are normally there come and go with the terrain, too. We’ve said previously about the coupé version that the stiffer suspension settings are worth using because the body control gains outweigh the small reduction in absorbency, but in the convertible, they just exacerbate the body stiffness issues. 17. Belarus's authoritarian leader has told the BBC it is "absolutely possible" his forces helped migrants cross into Poland but denies they were invited. Thousands of migrants, mainly from the Middle East, have been trying to get into the EU via Belarus for months. In an exclusive interview, Alexander Lukashenko told me: "We're Slavs. We have hearts. Our troops know the migrants are going to Germany." "Maybe someone helped them. I won't even look into this," he added. The EU, Nato and the US have accused the Belarus leader of luring migrants to the border with the false promise of easy entry to the EU. Something he has denied. "I told them [the EU] I'm not going to detain migrants on the border, hold them at the border, and if they keep coming from now on I still won't stop them, because they're not coming to my country, they're going to yours," he told me. "But I didn't invite them here. And to be honest, I don't want them to go through Belarus." Mr Lukashenko has been in power since 1994 but his re-election as president last year was widely discredited by the West and not recognised by the EU. Thousands of protesters and opposition activists were detained and opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was forced out of Belarus after claiming victory. Her team have criticised the BBC for conducting Friday's interview, which they described as "giving the floor to a dictator". In our interview at the presidential palace, I asked the Belarus leader about peaceful protesters being beaten and then tried to hand him a video showing people emerging from a notorious detention centre in Minsk with injuries they had sustained through torture. "OK, OK, I admit it, I admit it," he said. "People were beaten in the Okrestina detention centre. But there were police beaten up too and you didn't show this." I then asked him about how he had gone about destroying civil society, including the closure of 270 non-government organisations since July. "We'll massacre all the scum that you [the West] have been financing. Oh, you're upset we've destroyed all your structures! Your NGOs, whatever they are, that you've been paying for," he responded. How Belarus is helping ‘tourists’ break into the EU Belarus crackdown fails to crush opposition spirit Fear and violence in the jails of Belarus The EU claims Mr Lukashenko has been orchestrating the border crisis with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia in recent months in retaliation for sanctions imposed on Belarus for its brutal crackdown on opponents who took part in mass protests after the August 2020 election. It has accused him of taking an "inhuman, gangster-style approach". At least 2,000 migrants were stranded in camps next to Belarus's border with Poland until they were eventually moved this week to a logistics warehouse nearby. An estimated 5,000 migrants remain in Belarus, although hundreds flew back to Kurdish northern Iraq on a repatriation flight on Thursday. Link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-59343815

  21. It’s about to get a little bit easier to repair an iPhone 13 or iPhone 12, as Apple will soon let you do it yourself. The company has announced that it’s launching Self Service Repair, which allows users to access manuals and parts for iPhone repairs. You’ll be able to order the parts from an Apple Self Service Repair online store, with over 200 parts and tools set to be offered initially. These parts will allow for the repair of the most common iPhone problems, including many of those that affect the display, camera and battery, but the company promises to expand the number of supported repairs over time. This initial service is launching in the US in early 2022, for both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 ranges, but it will expand to other countries throughout the course of the year, as well as expanding to include repairs for Mac computers featuring M1 chipsets. Apple also notes that customers who return their used parts for recycling will receive credit towards the parts they purchased to carry out the repair. We’d think it’s likely that other Apple devices such as iPads, and perhaps older iPhones, will be added to the service over time, but that remains to be seen. Analysis: just because you can, doesn’t mean you should This could be a really useful service for some Apple customers, but the vast majority will probably still be best off getting repairs done the old-fashioned way. Apple emphasizes that Self Service Repair is intended for users who are technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices, which probably counts out most iPhone owners. Plus, it doesn’t seem like Apple makes its devices super easy to repair. While access to official parts and manuals will help, an iFixit teardown of the iPhone 13 Pro awarded it a repairability score of just 5/10, and every model in the iPhone 12 range was awarded a 6/10. So repairs are probably best left to the experts. The good news is there’s no shortage of them, with more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers and 2,800 Independent Repair Providers being available to help.
