With resolution 1,000 times greater than a light microscope, electron microscopes are exceptionally good at imaging materials and detailing their properties. But like all technologies, they have some limitations. To overcome these limitations, scientists have traditionally focused on upgrading hardware, which is costly. But researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory are showing that advanced software developments can push their performance further. Argonne researchers have recently uncovered a way to improve the resolution and sensitivity of an electron microscope by using an artificial intelligence (AI) framework in a unique way. Their approach, published in npj Computational Materials, enables scientists to get even more detailed information about materials and the microscope itself, which can further expand its uses. "Our method is helping improve the resolution of existing instruments so people don't need to upgrade to new expensive hardware so often," said Argonne assistant scientist and lead author Tao Zhou. Challenges with electron microscopy today Electrons act like waves when they travel, and electron microscopes exploit this knowledge to create images. Images are formed when a material is exposed to a beam of electron waves. Passing through, these waves interact with the material, and this interaction is captured by a detector and measured. These measurements are used to construct a magnified image. Along with creating magnified images, electron microscopes also capture information about material properties, such as magnetization and electrostatic potential, which is the energy needed to move a charge against an electric field. This information is stored in a property of the electron wave known as phase. Phase describes the location or timing of a point within a wave cycle, such as the point where a wave reaches its peak. When measurements are taken, information about the phase is seemingly lost. As a result, scientists cannot access information about magnetization or electrostatic potential from the images they acquire. "Knowing these characteristics is critical to controlling and engineering desired properties in materials for batteries, electronics and other devices. That's why retrieving phase information is important," said Argonne material scientist and group leader Charudatta Phatak, a co-author of the paper. Using an AI framework to retrieve phase information Retrieving phase information is a decades-old problem. It originated in X-ray imaging and is now shared by other fields, including electron microscopy. To resolve this problem, Phatak, Zhou and Argonne computational scientist and group leader Mathew Cherukara propose leveraging tools built to train deep neural networks, a form of AI. Neural networks are essentially a series of algorithms designed to mimic the human brain and nervous system. When given a series of inputs and output, these algorithms seek to map out the relationship between the two. But to do this accurately, neural networks have to be trained. That's where training algorithms come into play. "Tech companies like Google and Facebook have developed packages of software that are designed to train neural networks. What we've essentially done is taken those and applied them to the scientific challenge of phase retrieval," said Cherukara. Using these training algorithms, the research team demonstrated a way to recover phase information. But what makes their approach unique is that it also enables scientists to retrieve essential information about their electron microscope. "Normally when you're trying to retrieve the phase, you presume you know your microscope parameters perfectly. However, that knowledge might not be accurate," Zhou pointed out. "With our method, you don't have to rely on this assumption. Instead, you actually get the conditions of your microscope—that's something other phase retrieval methods can't do." Their method also improves the resolution and sensitivity of existing equipment. This means that researchers will be able to recover tiny shifts in phase, and in turn, get information about small changes in magnetization and electrostatic potential, all without requiring costly hardware upgrades. "Just doing a software upgrade we were able to improve the spatial resolution, accuracy and sensitivity of our microscopy," said Zhou. "The fact that we didn't need to add any new equipment to leverage these benefits is a huge advantage from an experimentalist's point of view." The paper, titled "Differential programming enabled functional imaging with Lorentz transmission electron microscopy," was published Sept. 6. link : https://techxplore.com/news/2021-12-artificial-intelligence-magnifies-electron-microscopes.html

Into the hybrid x86 era Alder Lake has finally arrived to the market and we now have our reviews of the leading-edge Core i9-12900K, Core i7-12700K, and Core i5-12600K with all of the performance benchmarks and analysis. Overall, the Core i5-12600K is now the Best CPU for gaming on the market, while the Core i7-12700K slots in as the best high-end processor for mainstream platforms. We've also included our full performance benchmarks in the article below. Intel's 12th-Gen Alder Lake chips bring the company's hybrid architecture, which combines a mix of larger high-performance cores paired with smaller high-efficiency cores, to desktop x86 PCs for the first time. Intel has already released the higher-end models for the desktop PC, but the company is largely expected to augment those chips with the more mainstream models very early next year in the CES 2022 timeframe. It also appears that Intel will also add the new design to its lowest-end chips, too. We also expect the Alder Lake models for laptops to also arrive in January. Intel's initial Alder Lake lineup starts with three chips and their graphics-less variants, with the flagship $589 Core i9-12900K, which Intel bills as the 'world's fastest gaming processor,' leading the charge with 16 cores and 24 threads. Intel claims this chip provides an average 13% generational jump in gaming performance, beats AMD's Ryzen 9 5950X flagship by up to 30% in gaming, and offers up to twice the performance of its predecessor in content creation workloads. Intel even claims up to an 84% generational gain in fps in some game streaming scenarios. We have our own testing in the article below, and there's no doubt that the Alder Lake chips are now the fastest gaming chips on the planet. They also bring amazing overclocking headroom for enthusiasts, offering up much more extra performance than AMD's Ryzen 5000 chips. You can see the detailed breakdown of that advantage in our How to Overclock 12th Gen Intel Alder Lake CPUs feature. You can also see how Alder Lake fares against AMD's comparable chips in these dedicated head-to-head articles: Intel Core i9-12900K vs Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X: Alder Lake and Ryzen 5000 Face Off Intel Core i5-12600K vs AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and 5800X Face Off: Ryzen Has Fallen Intel Core i7-12700K vs AMD Ryzen 9 5900X and 5800X Face Off: Intel Rising Alder Lake represents a massive strategic shift as Intel looks to regain the uncontested performance lead against AMD's Ryzen 5000 series processors. AMD's Zen 3 architecture has taken the lead in our Best CPUs for gaming and CPU Benchmarks hierarchy, partly on the strength of Ryzen's higher core counts. That's not to mention the pressure from Apple's M1 processors that feature a similar hybrid design to Alder Lake and come with explosive single-threaded performance improvements of their own. Intel's Alder Lake brings disruptive new architectures and supports features like PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 that leapfrog AMD and Apple in connectivity technology and also outstrip Ryzen's core counts in mobile designs. It all starts with a new way of thinking for x86 chips by pairing high-performance and high-efficiency cores within a single chip. That well-traveled design philosophy powers billions of Arm chips, often referred to as Big.Little (Intel calls its implementation Big-Bigger), but it's a first for x86 desktop PCs. The Golden Cove architecture powers Alder Lake's 'big' high-performance cores, while the 'little' Atom efficiency cores come with the Gracemont architecture. Intel etches the cores on its 'Intel 7' Enhanced SuperFin process, marking the company's first truly new node for the desktop since 14nm debuted six long years ago. Intel is going all-in: the company will reunify its desktop and mobile lines with Alder Lake. Intel says it will tune Alder Lake for high-performance, a must for desktop PCs and high-end notebooks. Potent adversaries challenge Intel on both sides. Apple's Arm-powered M1 processors have set a high bar for hybrid designs, outperforming all other processors in their class with the promise of more powerful designs to come. Meanwhile, AMD's Ryzen 5000 chips have taken the lead over Intel's aging Skylake derivatives. Intel's Rocket Lake chips overtook AMD in single-threaded performance, but they still trail in multi-core workloads due to Rocket Lake's maximum of eight cores, while AMD has 16-core models for the mainstream desktop. Intel certainly needs a come-from-behind design to thoroughly unseat its competitors, swinging the tables back in its favor like the Conroe chips did back in 2006 when the Core architecture debuted with a ~40% performance advantage that cemented Intel's dominance for a decade. Intel's Raja Koduri has already likened the transition to Alder Lake with the debut of Core, suggesting that Alder Lake could indeed be a Conroe-esque moment. link : https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-alder-lake-specifications-price-benchmarks-release-date

The hydrofoil manufacturer recently secured a £20m investment Is it a boat? Is it a plane? In truth, it’s a bit of both, and if Swedish firm Candela has anything to do with it our lakes and oceans will soon be filled with electric hydrofoils and heading for a fossil-fuel free future. Candela claims it tops sales worldwide for electric leisure and commercial vessels, and is seeking to expand its range of electric-powered hydrofoils after securing more than £20m of investment from venture capitalists this week. It says it will use the money to triple its R&D spend and scale up its production capabilities. To date, the company says electric boat sales have been hampered by high energy consumption and therefore low range. It says its hydrofoil design - which raises the boat above the waves on computer-controlled underwater wings - reduces energy consumption by 80%, giving its designs typically two to three times the range of comparable boats. It also says that as its boats are silent and wake-free they are smoother to be in than conventional boats. Gustav Hasselskog, CEO of Candela, said: “We’ve shown that our hydrofoil tech is the key to make electric boats commercially viable. We’re seeing boundless demand for the Candela C8, as well as huge interest in our commercial vessels. This investment will allow us to double down on our mission to speed up the transition to fossil fuel-free lakes and oceans. We are ready to scale up fast.” Candela has been selling its foiling C7 sportsboat for three years, and is now looking to launch the C8, a day cruiser, into production which it already has 100 advance orders for. It is also developing a shuttle ferry (named the Candela P30) and a water taxi (Candela P12) as it expands its ambitions for an electrified - and emission-free - future on the waterways. link : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/move-electric/electric-boat-maker-accelerates-expansion-plans

A sixth child has died from injuries suffered in a bouncy castle accident in Australia last week, police say. Chace Harrison, 11, had his life support switched off at a Hobart hospital on Sunday, three days after the accident. He was among nine students who fell 10m (32 ft) from an inflatable castle when it was lifted up by wind at a school fair in Devonport, Tasmania. Two children remain in a critical condition in hospital. The other five children who lost their lives were 11-year-old Addison Stewart, and 12-year-olds Zane Mellor, Jye Sheehan, Jalailah Jayne-Maree Jones, and Peter Dodt. One boy was injured and discharged from hospital on Friday. He visited Hillcrest Primary School on Sunday and paid tribute to his classmates. It is still unclear how the incident unfolded. Police say they are investigating whether the castle was tethered to the ground. "We don't want to rush it, but we also understand that the community wants answers," Tasmania Police Commissioner Darren Hine said on Sunday. Officers from New South Wales will travel to Tasmania this week to help conduct witness interviews as part of the investigation. Police said there were about 40 children as well as teachers and other adults at the school fair, which took place on the last day of the term. "It is paramount we don't pre-empt any outcome until all evidence is gathered and the investigation is complete," Commissioner Hine said. The tragedy has shattered Devonport - a city of fewer than 30,000 residents - and shocked Australians across the country. An online fundraiser for the families has raised over $1.3m (£700,000; $930,000). link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-59722770

Make your Mac faster, more efficient and more fun We love our Macs, and we also love finding new things to do with them. Whether it’s using your iPad as a second screen, AirDropping funny things to family members, or finding faster ways to do everyday things, we’ve never met a Mac tip we didn’t like. And in this guide, we’re going to share our favorites with you. Although the screenshots here were taken in macOS Monterey, all of our tips work on multiple versions of macOS – so if you’re using a relatively recent model, your Mac’s covered too. 1. Do conversions in Spotlight Since High Sierra, Spotlight has been able to do unit conversions such as converting dollar values into British pounds, or kilograms into pounds. For example, type ‘$1,000 in GBP’ to convert dollars to Sterling. 2. Summon Siri Press and hold Command+Space bar or click the Siri button in the Dock or menu bar and you have the same Siri service you’re used to on your iPhone. In addition to familiar tasks such as telling you the weather forecast, you can also ask Siri to locate specific files, toggle system functions or launch apps. 3. Run Windows Intel Macs can run Windows natively via Boot Camp, but you can also use a virtualization app such as VMWare Fusion, VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop to run Windows apps on your Mac desktop – and now you can do it on M1 Macs too. 4. Use shortcuts for screenshots Need a screengrab? Command+Shift+3 takes a full screen (or if you have multiple monitors, multiple full screens), while Command+Shift+4 enables you to capture a selection or, if you hit the spacebar, the window you click on. To capture the Touch Bar hit Command+Shift+6. 5. Show or hide the menu bar You can auto-hide the menu bar just as you can with the Dock. The options live in System Preferences > Dock & menu bar. link : https://www.techradar.com/news/55-mac-tips-tricks-troubleshooters-and-time-savers

By Anton Shilov published about 1 hour ago Dasung, one of the few companies working on large E Ink displays, recently started selling its Paperlike 253 monitor that was first introduced nearly a year ago. Unfortunately, the 25.3-inch E Ink display, which promises to ease eyestrain and potentially improve productivity, is rather expensive. But an even bigger problem is that it is only available to purchase in China and Japan according to Hermitage Akihabara. The Dasung Paperlike 253 features a 3200x1800 resolution (145 PPI) and since it uses E Ink technology, it can display 16 shades of gray rather than 16.7 million colors displayed by modern gaming monitors. The main advantage of the Paperlike 253 is that this type of display panel does not emit any blue light (which can cause eyestrain). It also does not flicker, which further reduces eyestrain. In addition, users can switch between graphics, text, and video modes, but you'll need to rely on external light sources to increase brightness. As far as connectivity is concerned, the Dasung Paperlike 253 has one DisplayPort, one HDMI, and one USB Type-C connector. It also has a triple-port USB 3.0 hub and an audio jack. The display comes with a height-adjustable stand and has a VESA 100x100 pattern if its owner wants to mount it. Specifications of the Dasung Paperlike 253 are not going to impress people used to color monitors. But for people who are used to working with paper and/or perhaps an E Ink e-book reader will certainly appreciate the paper-like look and reduced eyestrain provided by the display. But the E ink display comes with a hefty price. The Paperlike 253 is available for ¥298,000 in Japan ($2,425 without taxes) from only one store. Meanwhile, in China, the unit costs ¥9148 ($1,327 without taxes) when purchased directly from the manufacturer and will be shipped in mid-January. As for availability in other countries, the Paperlike 253 is not even listed on the English version of Dasung.com. link : https://www.tomshardware.com/news/dasung-paperlike-253-available

After a year and a half wait, PC players get no graphics options and widely reported stuttering in an overpriced package. This summer Square Enix released an updated version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake for the PlayStation 5 that Digital Foundry called a "stunning upgrade"—it upgraded textures across the board, overhauled the lighting, and offered a new 60 fps performance mode in addition to a 4K 30 fps option. Both were rock solid. Six months later, Square Enix has finally brought FF7R to PC, and something has gone very wrong. Not only is the PC port missing virtually all of the graphics options we'd expect from a high-end PC release, but it's showing stuttering issues on some systems, too. "The PC port is terrible," tweeted Digital Foundry's John Linneman. Terrible may be an exaggeration—unlike truly awful PC ports, FF7R isn't crashing or exhibiting game-breaking bugs that we've seen. But for $70, stingy graphics options in a game of this size and budget are a real red flag. Here's the entirety of what you can tweak: There's no variable framerate option, no way to tweak anti-aliasing, toggle VSync, or control effects like motion blur. The port also doesn't let you control resolution scaling, which is now a common option for balancing image quality and performance. On consoles, FF7 Remake uses dynamic resolution scaling to maintain a smooth framerate, meaning that your resolution might drop from 1440p to something closer to 1080p in the heat of battle to maintain 60 fps. The PC port does this too based on the framerate target you set—and gives you no option to disable it. It's a truly bizarre option to force on plays, and seems like it may be the source of some of FF7 Remake's performance issues, too. There's already a mod to disable dynamic resolution. When Square Enix ported Final Fantasy 15 to PC several years ago using its own in-house engine, it took time and care to make sure the PC port was up to snuff. It had far more options. Surely if Square Enix could pull that off with its own engine in 2018, it could do as well in 2021 with Unreal Engine 4, technology that has been used across countless PC games. Here are the PC graphics options in Kingdom Hearts 3, another Square Enix game running on Unreal Engine 4 that was released just this year. An unlocked framerate, separate detail level options for characters and backgrounds, anti-aliasing and motion blur? The gang's all here! Kingdom Hearts 3's options aren't as extensive as a showpiece Unreal Engine game like Gears 5's, but they're still leagues ahead of FF7 Remake's. Players have reported and recorded video like the one above of stuttering issues in FF7 Remake, which may be an issue with how Unreal Engine compiles shaders. A note on the PCGamingWiki suggests that FF7R may run into VRAM issues with textures set to High on graphics cards with less than 8GB of VRAM which smacks of an optimization problem, but it doesn't fully explain the stuttering. Digital Foundry's Alex Battaglia pointed out a stuttering issue in the opening scene on an RTX 3090, which has 24GB of VRAM. link : https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/final-fantasy-7-remakes-pc-port-is-a-major-disappointment/

While you can keep your face moisturised to avoid dryness, oiling your scalp is not the solution to treat dandruff, said Dr Kiran Sethi Now that winter is here and the chill is starting to set in, your skin and haircare routines will need a seasonal update. That’s because winter causes your skin to get dry, both on your face and your scalp, resulting in dandruff on your scalp and flaky skin on your face, especially around the nose. While you can keep your face moisturised to avoid dryness, oiling your scalp is not the solution to treat dandruff, said Dr Kiran Sethi, an aesthetic, skin, and wellness specialist. Dr Sethi shared an Instagram post wherein she talked about dandruff, captioning it: “Winter could mean an increase in dandruff in not just your scalp, but also scaly T-zone, nose and the lip area. This is because in the winter your scalp makes more oil to compensate for the dryness in the air, and the yeast that causes dandruff loves that oil!” In the video, she also cited the reason dandruff gets escalated during winter. “What happens is, during summer, your skin didn’t need much oil since the weather is humid. In winter, your hair and your skin start to compensate, so they produce more oil. The yeast that causes dandruff starts to produce even more. It loves all that oil on your scalp and your hair, so dandruff erupts. That’s why oiling worsens dandruff,” she explained. She further suggested remedies to treat dandruff as you spot it: “a shampoo which has salicylic acid, zinc parathion, selenium sulfide or ketoconazole”. Dr. Sethi also advised shampooing three times a week for 5-10 minutes before washing it off. How can you maintain your scalp and hair once you get rid of the dandruff? Wash your hair once or twice a week with that shampoo to prevent it from coming back. link : https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/dandruff-winter-haircare-tips-dermatologist-7677321/

Russia has demanded strict limits on the activities of the US-led Nato military alliance in countries in Eastern Europe. The demands, which are unlikely to be met, come amid Western fears Russia plans to invade its neighbour Ukraine. Russia denies this, but wants Nato to rule out Ukraine and others ever joining the alliance to defuse the situation. It has asked for urgent talks with the United States. The US said it was open to talking but that it would be putting its own concerns on the table too. "We've had dialogue with Russia on European security issues for the last twenty years," National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Friday. "That has sometimes produced progress, sometimes produced deadlock, but we are fundamentally prepared for dialogue." Earlier on Friday, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters the US will not go into the talks alone: "There will be no talks on European security without our European allies and partners." Nato, which was originally set up to defend Europe against possible threats from the former Soviet Union, has forces in the Baltic republics and Poland. What is the Nato defence alliance? Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Russia had given the US and Nato two draft treaties. There was no other option, he said, as the "state of relations between Russia and the collective West is a total lack of trust". In the proposals Russia sets out a series of radical demands, which require countries that joined Nato after the fall of the Soviet Union not to deploy troops or weapons in areas where they could be seen as a threat to Russia. Heavy bombers and warships would not be allowed in areas outside their national airspace or waters from which they could launch an attack. That would mean Nato not playing any role at all in any of the three Baltic republics or Poland. And Nato would have to abandon any plans for Ukraine and Georgia to eventually join the Western alliance. Diplomacy is the art of the possible. Well it was… until now. It's virtually impossible to imagine the US and Nato signing the draft documents Russian diplomats have drawn up, without considerable changes. Russia demanding a veto on who joins the Alliance. A non-starter. Nato has said many times before that Moscow can have no say over who gets to be a member. Plus the Russians want to turn the clock back to May 1997. Any country that joined the Nato alliance after that date won't be allowed Nato troops or weaponry. How would the Baltic states, which view Russia as a potential threat, feel about that? Moscow knows very well it's demanding things the West won't deliver, so why ask? A negotiating tactic, perhaps. Ask for the world and hope to secure other concessions. Or it may be designed for domestic consumption: to convince the Russian public that growing tension between Russia and the West isn't Moscow's fault. Russia invaded Georgia during a brief war in 2008 and seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 before backing separatists in eastern Ukraine. Conflict in the east began in April 2014 and has claimed more than 14,000 lives, with casualties still being reported. However, the build-up of Russian forces in areas beyond Ukraine's borders has prompted fears of another Russian invasion. EU leaders warned at a summit late on Thursday night that any aggression would have "massive consequences and severe cost" and spoke of restrictive measures while calling for diplomatic efforts to resolve the increase in tensions. CONTEXT: Is Russia preparing to invade Ukraine? ANALYSIS: What would be the fallout if Russia invaded Ukraine? PUTIN: Russian leader compares Ukraine war zone to genocide ZELENSKY: Ukraine's leader who swapped TV stardom for presidency They said diplomacy should focus on the four-way dialogue between Paris, Berlin, Kyiv and Moscow, known as the Normandy format. Russia pointedly preferred to focus on talks with the US. Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has warned that Russia is increasing, not reducing, its troops on the border with "combat-ready troops, tanks, artillery, armoured units, drones [and] electronic warfare systems". Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday he would prefer sanctions to be imposed immediately, before Russia took any military action. Ukraine shares borders with both the EU and Russia, with which it has deep social and cultural ties. link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-59696450

Tory Lanez told Megan Thee Stallion to "dance" before allegedly shooting at her feet, a court has heard. The rapper, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, is accused of shooting Megan after a party in the Hollywood Hills on 12 July 2020. Rapper Megan, 26, and Tory, 29, got into an argument while driving away from the event hosted by Kylie Jenner, news agency AFP reported. Tory denies assault with a gun and carrying a loaded gun in a vehicle. Megan, whose real name is Megan Pete, demanded to be let out of the car and then heard Tory shout "dance, b***h" as he opened fire with a handgun, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Ryan Stogner told a judge on Tuesday. The singer told police she was "bleeding profusely" from her feet and that she fell to the ground and crawled to a nearby driveway, AFP reported. Tory then "emphatically apologised for what he did" and offered to drive her home, the court heard, with the rapper later telling officers he had offered her money to not say anything about the shooting. Megan initially told police she had injured her feet by stepping on broken glass after the party, the Los Angeles Times said. She told Stogner she was "scared [Tory] was going to get in trouble", but later alleged that he had shot her. Megan posted on Instagram that she had been shot by Tory, but many of the tracks on his album, Daystar, claim he's being framed. At Tuesday's hearing a judge refused a defence application to dismiss the charges. The next hearing will take place on 13 January. Tory faces up to 23 years in prison if convicted. link : https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-59666623

Getting requests approved will soon be even easier in Teams Getting your next big project or idea approved by your manager or boss can often slow down productivity which is why Microsoft launched its new Approvals app in Microsoft Teams earlier this year. The Approvals app can be accessed from any chat or channel conversation or by using the dedicated app entry point in the left navigation bar in Teams. With the app open, all you have to do is fill in the details of the approval like the title, description and the users who need to approve it and hit 'Send'. However, you can also add attachments from Microsoft's office software or custom responses to tailor the request to your business needs. Once submitted, the approvers are notified within Teams and can act on an approval request either from the chat directly using the Approvals card or from within the Personal app. They can also quickly review the details of the approval right within Teams before making a decision to approve or reject it. Microsoft 365 groups as approvers After launching in January of last year, Microsoft is now working on a new feature for the Teams Approval App that is slated to roll out next month. According to a new post in the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, the software giant is adding the ability to select Microsoft 365 groups as approvers when creating a new approval request within Teams. For those unfamiliar, Groups in Microsoft 365 let you choose a set of people that you wish to collaborate with and easily set up a collection of resources for those people to share. These resources may include a shared Outlook inbox, shared calendar or a document library in OneDrive for collaboration on files. When this new feature becomes available, Teams users will be able to send approval requests to their Microsoft 365 groups which could be useful if approvers aren't using the company's video conferencing software and online collaboration tool. link : https://www.techradar.com/news/microsoft-teams-update-will-eliminate-a-common-business-bottleneck

Tips for overclocking your Intel CPU. Overclocking Intel processors used to be a very complicated manual process that found enthusiasts knee-deep in the BIOS, sifting through a myriad of complicated settings. Nowadays, motherboard manufacturers have created automatic overclocking software and one-button predefined presets in the BIOS that can greatly simplify the process of extracting the utmost performance from one of the Best CPUs for gaming, but that isn't always the best option. Simplified alternatives can produce satisfactory Intel overclocks, but they often apply an unnecessary amount of voltage and generate excess heat, so there's always room for improvement. More often than not, you could achieve better results by taking the time to manually overclock your Intel CPU instead of having a piece of software do it for you. Furthermore, you also get to learn more about your system, and, as they say, knowledge is power. As always, we have to remind you that there are risks involved with overclocking. First, you're voiding the warranty whenever you run an Intel processor outside of the manufacturer's specifications. In addition, there's always a possibility of premature failure if you overclock a CPU incorrectly. Finally, you're at the whims of the silicon lottery — not every chip can achieve the same overclocks. Nevertheless, today's modern chips have a plethora of in-built safety mechanisms that help reduce the risks associated with overclocking. As a result, if you take a common-sense and responsible approach, you can squeeze every single megahertz out of the processor without assuming unnecessary risks. Here's how. Overclocking Checklist Do I own an overclockable processor? Intel designates its overclockable CPU models with the "K" suffix. These overclockable models land in the Core i9, i7, i5, and occasionally, i3 families. And, of course, there are the KF-series (overclockable and graphics-less) models. Intel has also released special-edition models like the Core i9-9900KS that support overclocking, but those have become rare. Does my motherboard allow me to overclock? Intel chipsets with the "Z" suffix are the only models that fully support overclocking all of the tunable parameters. In addition, Intel also now allows memory overclocking on locked SKUs compatible with B560 and H570 chipsets, meaning all 10th-Gen Comet Lake, 11th-Gen Rocket Lake, and 11th-Gen Comet Lake Refresh processors. We also expect those policies to apply to 12th-Gen chips and 600-series motherboards. However, you still cannot overclock core frequencies on locked models. The second important aspect of the motherboard is the power delivery subsystem that's commonly known as the voltage regulator module (VRM). If you're not sure of the quality of the VRMs on your motherboard, our list of the Best Motherboards is a great place to start. There you can find the best models for overclocking and links to more resources, like our in-depth motherboard reviews and guides. Can my CPU cooler keep my overclocked processor cool? Never overclock on a stock cooler. In fact, it's a blessing that Intel stopped including stock coolers with the brand's K-series chips — that way, users don't fall to the temptation of overclocking their chips with these largely useless chunks of aluminum. Both aftermarket air and liquid coolers are good at what they do and can provide you with some overclocking headroom. However, cooling is one of the biggest limiting factors to your overclock, so you'll need to right-size your cooling solution to your chip. In addition, other factors, like budget, clearance space inside your case, and personal preference, will influence your choice of cooler. If you feel your CPU cooler isn't up to the task, we've detailed what we consider the best air and liquid coolers in our Best CPU Coolers 2021: Air and Liquid article. Does my power supply have sufficient headroom? It's important to evaluate your power supply's capacity to see whether it has the necessary headroom to accommodate the increased power draw. An underpowered power supply might lead to unwanted system shutdowns, restarts, or, in a worst-case scenario, the power supply could die and take a few of your components with it. For context, our tests show that modern overclocked CPUs can pull more than 320W of power after overclocking. Therefore, we recommend that your power supply has at least 150W to 250W of headroom over what's required for stock operation. You can see the basic guidelines with a power supply calculator, then head to our list of Best Power Supplies to assure that you have an adequate unit for your system. Get To Know Your Motherboard No two motherboards are the same, and motherboard makers tend to overcomplicate things by using different terminologies for the same settings. Luckily, most brands include a short description for each option inside the BIOS, so you shouldn't have any problems finding the equivalent term for your motherboard. You can also use software-based utilities that use the same terminology regardless of the motherboard. There are a plethora of settings and voltages that you can play with that affect your processor both directly and indirectly. For the scope of this article, we'll only focus on the basic settings that you'll need to get your overclock up and running. link : https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/overclock-intel-cpu

The new PPSh is utterly dominant. The Warzone PPSh-41 is a weapon we've seen in battle royale before. While the Cold War version was a middling SMG with average stats in most departments, the Vanguard version is a close-range monster, with a fast fire rate and a great deal of damage... if you hit all your shots. Unlocked at rank 51, while it'll take you a little while to get there, it's more than worth the time. So without further ado, here are two brilliant Warzone PPSh-41 loadouts. Muzzle: Recoil Booster Barrel: Empress 140mm Rapid Optic: Nydar Model 47 Stock: Kovalevskaya Skeletal Underbarrel: Mark VI Skeletal Magazine: 7.62mm Gorenko 71 Round Mags Ammunition: FMJ Rounds Rear Grip: Fabric Rear Grip Perk: Steady Perk 2: Quick Secondary STG44 Perks EOD Overkill Combat Scout Throwables Throwing Knife Heartbeat Sensor This PPSh-41 Warzone loadout is a monster at close range. The attachments I've gone for destroy its accuracy, though, so you won't be able to do a huge amount even at medium ranges. But with your STG44 as a backup, this gun will completely dominate at close range. First, no silencer. You could use the Mercury Silencer or M1929 Silencer, but with the PPSh-41, you're not playing to be stealthy. Instead we're using the Recoil Booster. With your improved fire rate, and Combined with the Empress 140mm Rapid barrel, you'll have a time-to-kill rivalling the best guns in the game. Of course, you'll need to beef up your magazine capacity to make this actually work, which is why the 7.62mm Gorenko 71 Round Mags are here. Sure, they hurt your mobility, but having 71 rounds before you have to reload is a huge advantage. The Rapid barrel isn't all sunshine and rainbows, though, because it harms your sprint-out time and accuracy. Here's the solution: don't use this gun at long range. The Kovalevskaya Skeletal stock is perfect for this use. It boosts movement and sprint-to-fire speed, so you'll be running around faster (even more so with Quick Perk 2 slot). In addition, the Mark VI Skeletal underbarrel attachment is a fantastic addition. It offers a boost to your ADS speed with no downside—rare in Warzone's world of trade-offs. Not to worry though, we're going for another trade-off with the Fabric Rear Grip. You get better sprint-out and ADS speed, but yet more harm to your accuracy. It hurts, but the damage potential is so worth it. You're moving fast in general, but with the Steady perk, you'll be even speedier, as you'll move quicker when ADS and firing. Sliding around on roller skates while strafing in close quarters could be exactly what the doctor ordered when it comes to one-on-one engagements. The best versatile Vanguard PPSh-41 Warzone loadout Attachments Muzzle: M1929 Silencer Barrel: ZAC 300mm Optic: Nydar Model 47 Stock: ZAC Folding Underbarrel: Mark VI Skeletal Magazine: 7.62mm Gorenko 71 Round Mags Ammunition: Lengthened Rear Grip: Stippled Grip Perk: Steady Perk 2: Quick Secondary Automaton Perks Cold Blooded Ghost Combat Scout Throwables Semtex Stun Grenades If you fancy a PPSh-41 Warzone loadout usable at medium ranges as well as close, here are the changes you should look to make. First, chuck on the ZAC 300mm barrel. It's the longest one you have access to, and while it harms your movement speed slightly, it significantly improves your bullet velocity and accuracy. With a couple of other additions, you can make the PPSh-41 actually viable at reasonable distances. The ZAC Folding stock is a great one for this gun, too: it helps reduce recoil when you fire in short bursts, so you should have a really reliable weapon for medium ranges. The Stippled Grip does the same thing and combined with the Lengthened ammunition, it's a perfect storm of mid-range power. I like the Automaton as a secondary weapon for the PPSh-41. If you build that as a maximum-range beast, then the PPSh-41 works well as a secondary to cover you at all other ranges. link : https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/best-vanguard-ppsh-41-warzone-loadout/

Does Vauxhall's funky new SUV have the outstanding attributes to make it truly stand out? Life with a Vauxhall Mokka: Month 4 If you fancy a small crossover, we must ask: are you Juking? - 1 December 2021 The arrival at my flat last week of a Nissan Juke triple auto for an online review made for an ideal impromptu twin test against our long-term Vauxhall Mokka triple auto (I would love to know what the neighbours suspect I do for a living). The Juke is one of the Mokka’s main rivals, having followed in the footsteps of the larger Qashqai by establishing a market niche that very quickly became the exact opposite – in this case, the compact crossover. The first thing that struck me was how both look much better than their predecessors – particularly the Juke, which no longer appears as a bloated frog (and will surely make owners less inclined to permanently leave their foglights on). I also noted that both go for a colour-contrasting style line over their glasshouses, which in either case is an enhancer. Much was made at the launch of the Juke about the improvement in quality to its interior, and indeed it looks very snazzy here, what with its padded leather covering, orange ambient lighting and Mercedes-aping jet engine-style air vents. Yet in spite of its materials feeling less ‘premium’, I prefer the cockpit of the Mokka. Its Pure Panel dashboard layout – comprising an infotainment touchscreen and an equal-size digital instrument display – is as clear as it is effective, in contrast to the cluttered clusters of its Japanese equivalent. The Mokka also feels roomier somehow, even though in reality they’re closely matched – I suppose due to the chubbiness of the Juke’s centre console and sports seats. The Juke fights back, though, with its automatic gear selector and its sound system. The first is superior because it’s a manual ’box-style lever that you simply can’t miss (even more so when it’s encircled in orange at night, like the rim of a volcano), in contrast to the Mokka’s piddly little switch that your fingers have to search about for. And the second is better because this Juke has Nissan’s Bose system, which sounds good (if not great) and, unusually, can give a surround effect, thanks to speakers on the sides of the front headrests. Does it have substance, too? Read our review Ar Juke, but the point is that Vauxhall offers a choice; Nissan doesn’t. The next biggest difference is definitely the steering. Having got used to the light-as-air helm of the Mokka, the meatiness of the Juke surprised me. After all, this Nissan isn’t meant to be a sporty one. Or is it? It also handles a bit more sharply than the Vauxhall and its ride is firmer (but, importantly, not harsh), giving it a more sure-footed feel. Disappointingly, both cars fall short in regards to their automatic gearboxes (a seven-speed dual-clutcher in the Juke, an eight-speed torque converter in the Mokka). It’s not that they’re dim-witted or jarring when you’re on the move; in fact, they’re perfectly capable. The issue is with low-speed manoeuvring. Trying to follow the parking instructions of the marshal on the Eurotunnel train in the Mokka was thoroughly embarrassing, even with the engine stop-start system switched off; but trying to park the Juke in a parallel bay was downright frustrating. Have autos always been inept in this way? If so, I’m not remembering correctly. Perhaps it’s due to WLTP test-friendly programming. Either way, give me a good old manual. Love it: Pure panel I really like the simple look of the touchscreen (even if its menus can often be unintuitive) and the sat-nav map on the dial display. Loathe it: Box park When I try to slowly and carefully creep forward in order to not hit anything, first gear disengages, so I end up with a series of lurches. Mileage: 4852 Back to the top What an improvement - 10 November 2021 Sorry, Vauxhall, but I’m afraid I must be brutally honest here: the original Mokka was one of the least inspiring cars I’ve driven in nearly six years in this job. But I couldn’t be happier to report that the Mk2 is an entirely different kettle of fish, in terms of how it drives, how it feels inside and, most of all, how very attractive its exterior design is. Already we have much to thank Stellantis for. Mileage: 4491 Back to the top Time to see what its sporting and long-haul credentials are like - 27 October 2021 So far, we’ve established that the Mokka is an economical car, both in its standard driving mode and greener Eco. I’ve dabbled with Sport, but not extensively – so where better to do that than the sweeping rural roads of Yorkshire? Switching to the Sport driving setting dowses the digital driver’s display with red and adds sharpness to the throttle response. The eight-speed automatic gearbox is slightly more responsive, too. The Mokka is certainly capable on these winding roads. The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit in our car offers 128bhp, which is delivered smoothly enough. The Vauxhall isn’t as much fun to drive as a Ford Puma, though. Downshifts are a little slow and it sometimes changes gear automatically when in manual mode, which is annoying. The lightness of its steering – a real asset in town – impedes engagement at higher speed on a challenging road, too. Still, the engine sound enhancement injects an element of entertainment, even if it does sound a bit silly at times. However, these ‘negatives’ will be relatively insignificant for the Mokka’s target audience – younger families and couples who are unlikely to be looking to blast down the B6255 in the Dales, like I did, to test the driving dynamics of a town-targeted crossover. Instead, they’ll be cruising along taking in the sights of the countryside and the Mokka is excellent at that. The car’s good all-round visibility meant I had no problem getting a clear view of the eye-catching Ribblehead Viaduct, which was spookily towered over by Whernside. Ride comfort was helped by the reasonable condition of the road, but I experienced a fair bit of road noise, probably exacerbated by those larger, 18in wheels. Hundreds of women abused by former US national gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar are to receive $380 million (£287 million) after reaching a settlement with USA Gymnastics. It ends a five-year legal battle that began in the wake of the huge abuse scandal that rocked US sport. Nassar was sentenced to over 300 years in jail in 2018 for molesting gymnasts. Athletes including a number of Olympic medallists testified about how Nassar sexually abused them. The settlement is among the largest ever for a sexual abuse case, and as part of the agreement USA Gymnastics and the Olympic Committee will give board seats to survivors. Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to go public with allegations against Nassar in 2016, welcomed the news, writing on Twitter: "This chapter is finally closed." She added: "Now the hard work of reform and rebuilding can begin. Whether or not justice comes and change is made, depends on what happens next." The settlement will cover claims brought by Olympic gold medallists including Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney. In total, Nassar was accused of sexual abuse by more than 330 women and girls at USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University. A report into an FBI investigation, which was published in July, found numerous missteps, delays and cover-ups by FBI agents, which allowed Nassar's abuse to continue for several more months after the case was first opened. A lawyer representing the victims described Monday's settlement as "historic" but said they would continue to "pursue justice" against officials who had failed to investigate. Lawyer John C Manly paid tribute to the women who had testified publicly, adding: "We prevailed for one simple reason, the courage and tenacity of the survivors." USA Gymnastics filed for bankruptcy in 2018, as the claims filed against Nassar kept mounting. The settlement was confirmed during a hearing in a federal bankruptcy court on Monday. In a statement after the settlement was approved, USA Gymnastics said it was "deeply sorry for the trauma and pain that survivors have endured as a result of this organization's actions and inactions". "Individually and collectively, survivors have stepped forward with bravery to advocate for enduring change in this sport. We are committed to working with them, and with the entire gymnastics community, to ensure that we continue to prioritize the safety, health and wellness of our athletes and community above all else," USA Gymnastics president Li Li Leung said. In total, some $880m in compensation has now been agreed in cases relating to Nassar's abuse - after Michigan State University agreed to pay out $500m in 2018. link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-59645647
