The paintings refer to the practice of hunting and grazing by the people of the region MAKKAH: Saudi Arabia has a rich heritage depicted in the rock art sites scattered across the country. These show representations of religious, political and socioeconomic life since ancient times. The engravings, some of which date back to 12,000 B.C., include many images of animals that were used by man for their milk, meat, skins and fur. Dr. Salma Housawi, professor of ancient history at King Saud University, said that the rock art shows that the inhabitants of the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula began to hunt and domesticate animals in around 6,000 B.C. “The dog was one of the first animals to be domesticated and used for hunting. Donkeys and bulls depicted in the drawings are also domesticated then,” she added. Housawi noted that the rock paintings scattered in the northwest of the Arabian Peninsula, which date from 4000 to 2000 B.C., refer to the practice of hunting and grazing by the people of the region. When the climate of Saudi Arabia became extremely hot and arid, cattle gradually disappeared and were replaced by animals that are more suited to the dry environment, such as camels, ibex and goats, particularly in the northern and western regions. The professor said that camels were first depicted on the rocks of Kilwa northeast of Tabuk. She said the camel was used for transportation due to its endurance and ability to sustain harsh desert conditions of the Arabian Peninsula, making it one of the most important animal resources. “The camel is a food source and a means of transport that has played a major role in Arab relations with their neighbors, in addition to its participation in the wars.” She noted that in the area of Jabal Al-Malihiya, 40 kilometers east of Hail, its rock facades have important inscriptions and drawings depicting cows, wild camels, ostriches and lions. She said that Saudi Arabia was keen to register the Hail rock paintings on the UNESCO World Heritage List because of these animal drawings. “The Qassim area also abounds with animal drawings of ostriches, lions, lionesses, cows and camels, while in the Uyun Al-Jawa you can find drawings of predators, ibex, ostriches and camels,” she said. “Mount Tamiya in Uglat Asugour region also features drawings of camels and ibexes.” The rock art of the Al-Bukayriyah area features a fascinating drawing of a lion and lioness next to each other. The rock art of the central region of the Dawadmi province, which shows a similar range of animals, includes aurochs, as well. She also noted that rock drawings were also interesting for their hunting scenes, which illustrated accurately both the movement of the hunter and animal and the weapons used in hunting. “The Ministry of Culture, represented by the Saudi Heritage Authority, is making a great effort to preserve and document archaeological and historical areas in the Kingdom, in cooperation with various foreign missions in accordance with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030,” Housawi said.

United were due to make the short trip to Deepdale at the weekend as part of their build-up to the new Premier League season Routine lateral flow testing on Thursday saw some possible positive cases returned. LONDON: Manchester United have canceled their pre-season friendly at Preston on Saturday after a number of suspected Covid-19 cases within the camp of the English football giants. United were due to make the short trip to Deepdale, fellow northwest club Preston’s home ground, at the weekend as part of their build-up to the new Premier League season. But routine lateral flow testing on Thursday saw some possible positive cases returned. Those concerned are now isolating, pending further PCR tests. In a statement, United said: “Maintaining Covid security is a priority for us. Following routine testing of the first-team training group today, we have identified a small number of suspected positive cases. This has led to those people isolating, pending further tests. “As a precautionary measure based on Covid protocols, we have taken the difficult decision that we will not now be able to play the friendly match against Preston North End this Saturday.” The statement added: “We regret the disruption to Preston and disappointment caused to fans. Any Manchester United fans who have purchased tickets for the game will be automatically refunded. “At this stage, we do not expect further disruption around our forthcoming matches, but we will continue to follow Premier League protocols in this regard.” United are due to finish their pre-season program with a game against top-flight rivals Everton at Old Trafford on August 7.

DUBAI: Afghan-Pakistani designer and artist Osman Yousefzada has unveiled a world record-breaking new artwork for the UK Selfridges store in Birmingham, the city where he grew up. Titled “Infinity Pattern 1,” his pink and black tessellated installation that wraps around the futuristic curved facade of the department store, was co-commissioned by the city’s Ikon Gallery and Selfridges Birmingham. The 44-year-old was selected by Ikon art gallery as the winner of its international competition. The gigantic, public installation, which measures in at 10,000 square meters and weighs five tons, will adorn Selfridge’s storefront until the end of the year while it undergoes restoration. The son of Afghan-Pakistani immigrants, the designer-turned-artist said his giant canvas addressed issues of race, labor, and migration which had shaped the city’s past and present. “Infinity Pattern 1,” Yousefzada’s first piece of public art, is also a record-breaker, having been confirmed as the world’s largest canvas. As a fashion designer his tailored pieces have been worn by the likes of American singers Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift. In addition to his celebrity loved eponymous label launched in 2008, Yousefzada is also known for his multi-disciplinary artwork that tackles the socio-political issues of the day. He held his first solo art show titled “Being Somewhere Else” at Ikon Gallery in 2018, exploring the links between fashion and migration.

Play was halted just before 2:00 p.m. local time KAWAGOE: The first round of the Olympic golf tournament was suspended Thursday because of a lightning storm at the Kasumisageki Country Club. Play was halted just before 2:00 p.m. local time with 27 of the 60-player field yet to finish their opening 18 holes as thunder cracked around the course. Unheralded Austrian Sepp Straka set the early pace with a bogey-free eight-under par 63 to be leader in the clubhouse after playing in the first group out. British Open champion Collin Morikawa, representing USA, was yet to complete his round at one-under par with five holes left alongside partner Rory McIlroy of Ireland on the same score. Home favorite Hideki Matsuyama, the US Masters champion, had just finished with a two-under par 69 as when play was halted, with “dangerous weather” given as the official reason. Lying second in the clubhouse three shots behind Straka were Thomas Pieters of Belgium and Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz.

Blinken, Jaishankar agree to expand multilateral security partnership NEW DELHI: Growing concerns over China and turmoil in Afghanistan dominated talks between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi on Wednesday, with both officials urging the Taliban and Kabul to resolve issues to create a country that is “at peace with itself and its neighbors.” Jaishankar said in a joint press conference in New Delhi at the end of a two-hour meeting with his US counterpart: “We spoke at length about regional concerns, multilateral institutions and global issues.” It is Blinken’s first visit to India after assuming charge as US President Joe Biden’s secretary of state. “Regarding Afghanistan, it is essential that peace negotiations are taken seriously by all parties,” Jaishankar said, adding: “The world wishes to see an independent, sovereign, democratic and stable Afghanistan at peace with itself and with its neighbors.” Blinken appreciated India’s contributions to Kabul’s development and talked about working together to stabilize the war-ravaged country. “We discussed regional security scenarios, including Afghanistan,” Blinken said in his opening statement. “India and the US share a common view on a peaceful, secured and stable Afghanistan. India has made and continues to make vital contributions to Afghanistan’s stability and development,” he added. New Delhi has spent billions on development projects in Afghanistan in recent years and is a firm backer of the Kabul government. However, the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan forced India to evacuate 50 staff from two consulates in the country as the Taliban gained even more territory amid a drawdown of US-led foreign forces. In April, President Biden ordered the complete withdrawal of about 3,000 US troops from Afghanistan by Sept. 11, effectively ending the US’ longest war. Earlier this month, Biden gave an updated timeline and said that the US military mission would end by Aug. 31. Taliban fighters have swept across the country in recent weeks, with the Pentagon admitting on July 21 that half of all district centers — surrounding 17 of Afghanistan’s 34 provincial capitals — were now in the hands of the Taliban. Blinken said that he disapproved of the Taliban’s “military adventure” as it “does not serve the objective of peace” in Afghanistan. “Taking over the country by force and abusing the rights of the people is not the path to achieve those objectives. There is only one path, and that is at the negotiation table to resolve the conflict peacefully,” the US official said. He emphasized that the Taliban’s military advances were “troubling” and that Washington remains engaged in Afghanistan. “The Taliban is making advances in district centers; there are reports of them committing atrocities in Afghanistan. It’s deeply troubling. It certainly doesn’t speak well about their intentions for the country. We remain engaged in Afghanistan,” he added. India’s human rights issues was also brought up in discussions, with Blinken holding talks with civil society leaders in Delhi ahead of his meeting with Jaishankar. “Shared values — freedom and equality — are key, and none of us have done enough. We need to strengthen our democratic institutions. This is at the core of our relationship, beyond strategic and economic ties,” Blinken said. Since being elected to office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government have faced allegations of suppressing dissent, pursuing divisive policies to appeal to Hindu voters and enacting the Citizenship Amendment Law two years ago, which Muslims argue is discriminatory. 0Debate over India’s human rights record became even more pronounced following the death in custody of 87-year-old Jesuit priest Stan Swamy, who was arrested on charges of supporting ultra-Maoists while awaiting bail. “One of the elements Americans admire most is a fundamental freedom and human rights. That’s how we define India. India’s democracy is powered by free-thinking citizens,” Blinken said. The US secretary of state also met a Tibetan delegation in Delhi and ended his short visit to the capital by meeting with Modi. Both sides also discussed the upcoming meeting in September of the Quad group of countries comprising India, Japan, Australia and the US. The Quad will hold the summit in Washington, which Modi is expected to attend. Blinken, however, denied that the Quad had been created to counter China’s interests in the Indo-Pacific region following Beijing’s accusations that the “Asian NATO” group was designed to harm China. The US has long viewed India as a key partner in efforts to overpower China’s economic and military might in the Indo-Pacific region, but Blinken rejected the view that the Quad was a “military alliance.” He said: “What is Quad? It’s quite simple but important. Its purpose is to advance cooperation on regional challenges while reinforcing international rules and values that we believe together underpin peace, prosperity, and stability in the region. “We share a vision — India and the US — of a free, open and secure atmosphere in the Indo-Pacific and will work together to make that a reality,” he added. Foreign policy experts see Blinken’s visit as a “sign of maturity” in India-US ties. “The press conference was indicative of how the US-India relationship has matured,” Pranay Kotasthane, deputy director of the Takshashila Institution based in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, told Arab News. “There was no mention of our western neighbor, and the focus was on regional security, economic recovery and global issues such as climate change,” he added, before noting the convergence between the two countries on the situation in Afghanistan. “On Afghanistan, both countries seem to agree that a Taliban that forces itself on the people of Afghanistan will face the consequences in terms of international recognition and access, and both the countries feel the need for resolution through the intra-Afghan dialogue,” Kotasthane said. https://www.arabnews.com/node/1901866/world

PV Sindhu eased into the knockout stage with a convincing victory against Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong 21-9, 21-16 in her last Group J encounter at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday. Sindhu will now face Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark in the round of 16 match. Blichfeldt drubbed Linda Zetchiri of Bulgaria 21-10, 21-3 in her last Group I match. Sindhu’s victory against world No. 34 Cheung was never in doubt as the Indian defeated her five times before this match. As expected the world champion dominated the Hong Kong girl in the first game. However, in the second Cheung played well and troubled the Indian in the first part of the game. From 2-6, Cheung won five straight points to move to 7-6 and even went into the break with a one point lead at 11-10. But from 14-14, Sindhu changed the gears and won six straight points to move to 20-14. The Indian played some delightful smashes and cross court drives to keep her opponent at bay. Sindhu said this type of a match is important for her ahead of the tough matches. “I found my rhythm from the second game and I finished it off. It was a fast game and I made a couple of unforced errors. I changed my tactics and got things under control. This type of test is important before a big match," Sindhu told the BWF website. Sindhu said that the match against Blichfeldt will not be easy. “It's not going to be an easy game. I need to recover well and come back stronger. I've played her a couple of times, every point is going to be important. She's an aggressive player so I need to be aggressive as well,” Sindhu told BWF. The world No.7 enjoys a 4-1 win-loss record against Blichfeldt. The only victory for the Dane came this January at the Thailand Open. During that period, SIndhu was not in good shape. But the Indian exacted revenge at the Swiss Open in March when she ousted Blichfeldt in straight games 22-20, 21-10. On the wind conditions at the stadium, Sindhu said, “Can't complain much about it because it's the same for every player. You have to learn to control the shuttle”. Sindhu’s likely rivals in the quarterfinals (Akane Yamaguchi) and semifinals (Tai Tzu Ying) progressed to the knockouts without breaking much sweat.

Victoria’s 5 million residents will be allowed to leave home freely and schools will reopen Highly infectious Delta variant took hold in the New South Wales capital of Sydney CANBERRA/SYDNEY: Australia’s Victoria state said on Tuesday it will end lockdown after curtailing the spread of COVID-19, but neighboring New South Wales faced a four-week extension of restrictions according to media reports after new cases hit a 16-month peak. More than half of Australia’s near 26 million po[CENSORED]tion has been in lockdown in recent weeks after an outbreak of the highly infectious Delta variant took hold in the New South Wales capital of Sydney and spread to three states. New South Wales reported 172 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, up from 145 a day earlier, with at least 60 spending time in the community while infectious. New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said a decision whether to lift the five-week lockdown will be taken this week, and local media later reported the state would announce a four-week extension of the order on Wednesday. With less than 13 percent of the state’s po[CENSORED]tion fully vaccinated, curbs are expected to stay. “We know we’ve put in the hard yards for five weeks and we don’t want to waste all the good work that we’ve done by opening too early and then having the virus spread again,” Berejiklian told a media conference. A spokesperson was not immediately available to confirm the media reports about the planned lockdown extension. In contrast, Victoria state said most restrictions imposed on July 15 will be removed from Wednesday after recording just 10 infections of people already in quarantine. “All in all, this is a good day,” Victoria state Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters in Melbourne. Victoria’s 5 million residents will be allowed to leave home freely and schools will reopen, though households will not be permitted to have visitors. South Australia said it will also lift a lockdown on Wednesday after it recorded zero COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours. Lockdowns have raised the prospect of Australia recording its second recession in as many years, though Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said on Tuesday talk of this was premature. Frydenberg said last week the country’s A$2 trillion ($1.5 trillion) economy is expected to shrink in the latest GDP figures, with lockdowns costing about A$300 million daily. Easing lockdowns will soften the economic toll, but New South Wales is Australia’s biggest state economy and accounts for about a third of national output. Swift contact tracing, tough social distancing rules and lockdowns have helped Australia to keep its COVID-19 numbers low, with just under 33,100 cases and 920 deaths since the pandemic first appeared in early 2020. The outbreak in Sydney, however, has seen a wave of hospitalizations and 10 deaths in recent weeks. New South Wales said 169 people are in hospital with the virus, of which 46 are in intensive care. Amid heightened concerns about hospitalizations of younger people, Australia has urged people to take AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine after struggling to secure enough supplies of Pfizer’s inoculations. Authorities had previously recommended only over 60s should take the AstraZeneca shot after rare but serious blood clotting cases.

The BCCI remains the hosts of the event, which will now be held in Dubai International Stadium, the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the Sharjah Stadium, and the Oman Cricket Academy Ground, from October 17 to November 14. The groups, selected on the basis of team rankings as of 20 March 2021, see defending champions the West Indies pooled along with former champions England, Australia and South Africa in Group 1 of the Super 12s, with two qualifiers from Round 1 joining them. Group 2 will comprise former champions India and Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan and the other two qualifiers from Round 1. In my capacity as Asian Cricket Council President, my vision is to take cricket far and deep into Asia. Co-hosting the World Cup will put Oman Cricket on the global stage.
