  2. The pandemic may have brought work to a halt on projects around the world, but next year is nonetheless set to welcome an exciting array of new buildings. Commissioned and designed years ago, these structures are unlikely to reflect the new design priorities that will emerge from Covid-19. Yet, they are very much in keeping with the civically generous and sustainable spirit of the world's best contemporary architecture. From museums to performing arts venues, these are CNN Style's most anticipated buildings opening or completing in 2021. 3. "Women across all age groups are at constant risk and it is heart-breaking to feel this as a woman myself," Chillar said in a statement Miss World 2017 pageant winner Manushi Chillar has been roped in by United Nations Women for a global initiative called #OrangeTheWorld to raise awareness on gender-based violence. The 23-year-old model-actor said women are most susceptible to violence in various forms everywhere and her heart goes out to them. “Women across all age groups are at constant risk and it is heart-breaking to feel this as a woman myself,” Chillar said in a statement. She said women must raise their voice against violence and also empower other women to stand up. The actor believes the COVID-19-induced lockdown, which gripped the entire world in early 2020, has led to the rising number of cases of violence against women. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, the violence against women has grown darker. Cases of domestic violence have increased. But as we work towards emerging from COVID-19 we need to also actively work towards rebuilding a world that’s safe for women,” she said.

  5. In a 2009 interview in The New Yorker, Dumile said the mask became necessary as he made the leap from the studio to the stage. Daniel Dumile, the masked rapper who performed as MF Doom and built a lasting underground fan base with his offbeat wordplay and comic-book persona, died on Oct. 31, a statement from his family said on Thursday. He was 49. The rapper’s record label, Rhymesayers, provided the statement, signed by Dumile’s wife, Jasmine. The label did not provide details on a cause of death or why the information was being shared two months later. Over six solo albums released between 1999 and 2009 and five collaborative LPs (with Madlib and Danger Mouse, among others) between 2004 and 2018, Dumile honed a style that was intricate and imaginative, calling on both esoteric and lowbrow references as well as cartoonish imagery in lyrics that could be poignantly emotional. Born in London and raised on Long Island, Dumile grew up steeped in early hip-hop influences. He debuted in 1989 on the 3rd Bass track “The Gas Face” with a standout cameo that helped him get a record deal for his own group, KMD, in which he rapped as Zev Love X. The act included his brother, Dingilizwe, who performed under the name DJ Subroc, and its first album, “Mr. Hood,” arrived in 1991 on the major label Elektra. During the recording of KMD’s second album, “Black Bastards,” Subroc was killed in a car accident, and the label later declined to release the record. Dumile went underground, vanishing from the entertainment business, but continuing to work on music privately while he raised his son. He resurfaced in 1997 with the single “Dead Bent,” his first song under the name Metal Face Doom. (The persona was a nod to the Marvel villain Doctor Doom.) Around the time of the release of the album “Operation: Doomsday” in 1999, which featured a masked character on its cover, he began hiding his face in public, at first with a stocking mask, and later with the metal one that became his signature. In a 2009 interview in The New Yorker, Dumile said the mask became necessary as he made the leap from the studio to the stage. “I wanted to get onstage and orate, without people thinking about the normal things people think about,” he said. “A visual always brings a first impression. But if there’s going to be a first impression I might as well use it to control the story. So why not do something like throw a mask on?” Once an underground cult figure, Dumile’s albums in the mid-aughts launched him to greater fame. “Madvillainy,” which arrived in 2004 with the producer Madlib, was a breakthrough. “He delivers long, free-associative verses full of sideways leaps and unexpected twists,” pop music critic Kelefa Sanneh wrote in The New York Times, reviewing a 2004 concert. “You think you know where he’s heading and what each sentence will mean when it ends. Then it bends.” On “Raid,” a track from “Madvillainy,” he rhymes: Trippin’, to date the Metal Fellow been rippin’ flows Since New York plates was ghetto yellow With broke blue writing, this is too exciting Folks leave out the show feelin’ truly enlightened Released in the same year, his album “MM .. FOOD” (an anagram of his stage name) included tracks like “Gumbo,” “Kon Queso” and “Kon Karne.” In rapping about the seemingly mundane topic of food with goofiness and wit, Dumile told Spin in 2004 that he was “showing respect for human life.” “I’m more like a writer dude rather than a freestyler,” Dumile told the Chicago Tribune that same year. “I like to design my stuff, and I consider myself an author.” Dumile rapped under different personas, and later became known for sending impostors out onstage to perform for fans; in his trademark metal mask, it was difficult to know the difference. The body doubles often disappointed fans but sparked viral moments online, like when an apparent MF Doom drop-in at a concert turned out to be comedian Hannibal Buress. Though he never reached mainstream superstardom, Dumile was widely admired by fellow rappers and producers, in addition to a loyal following of fans. He was “your favorite MC’s MC,” wrote Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest on Twitter. In a post on Instagram, El-P wrote, “thank you for keeping it weird and raw always. you inspired us all and always will.” In 2017, Dumile announced on social media that his son, King Malachi Ezekiel Dumile, had died at 14. Information on survivors was not immediately available.
  6. You'd struggle to find anyone in Europe who will be unhappy to see the back of 2020. Covid-19, Brexit and the international political carnage of this year have hammered the continent and exacerbated tensions that have blighted the European Union for years. But those problems are not going anywhere in 2021. With no pandemic, fraught talks with the UK or an American president as anti-European Union as Donald Trump, Brussels might finally find space to address issues that have long undermined the bloc -- though it won't be easy. To some extent, the crises of 2020 have masked a debilitating lack of unity across the EU. For all Brussels' lofty ambitions of greater integration and becoming a global force in its own right, it faces pushback on issues ranging from internal adherence to the rule of law to a coordinated strategy for dealing with China. Rule of law is probably the most immediate problem to solve. After months of painful negotiation, the bloc's member states agreed on both a long-term budget and a Covid recovery package that totaled nearly $2 trillion. The nations that have been worst affected by the pandemic desperately need those funds. However, two member states spent a good chunk of 2020 objecting to the release of those funds: Hungary and Poland. The governments of Viktor Orban and Mateusz Morawiecki objected to the funds being tied to adherence to the rule of law, which is unsurprising as both are being investigated for breaches at an EU level. The charges levelled at both countries range from suppression of government critics to undermining the independence of the judiciary. During the coronavirus crisis, concerns have also been raised about the use of emergency measures in numerous EU nations -- including Hungary and Poland -- that curb the fundamental rights of citizens. It had long been speculated that Brussels would attempt to tie the EU's budget to the rule of law as a way of bringing delinquent states to heel. Unfortunately, trying to do so during a pandemic and the subsequent recession has strengthened the impact of the veto to which every member state is entitled. In this particular instance, intransigence in Budapest and Warsaw ultimately led to a compromise in Brussels in which both sides gave ground, which in the grand scheme of things could be interpreted as the EU fudging on one of its key principles. "Hungary and Poland might be the most extreme cases. But lots of other nations have backslid on civil liberties in the past few years," says Jakub Jaraczewski, legal officer at Democracy Reporting International. "Tying rule of law directly to EU money is not in itself a bad idea," he explains. "But if more than one nation is pushing the boundaries by curtailing freedoms and undermining judges, you will inevitably find these states backing each other at an EU level, undermining the whole thing." Several influential voices in Brussels had previously suggested approving the Covid recovery funds without Hungary and Poland, moving forward as 25, rather than 27. That approach, though, would have carried the risk of opening another fraught debate within the EU: Precisely how united the Union should be. Before Brexit, it wasn't just the UK which had populist movements agitating to leave the EU. Four years on, Europe's Euroskeptic parties are no longer looking to leave the bloc -- now they want to take it over instead. "It's clear that our electorate does not currently seek an exit from the EU, so instead our focus is to build enough Euroskeptic support to steer it away from the looming disaster of ever closer unity," says Gunnar Beck, a member of the European Parliament for Germany's far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party. Beck believes that the European Euroskeptic movement has the potential to grow, even as normality is restored post-Brexit and Joe Biden, a supporter of the EU, replaces Trump. "The EU has been in perpetual crisis since 2010 and hasn't solved any of the problems these crises have caused, be it the eurozone crisis, the migration crisis or now the Covid crisis," he says.
  7. Tesla's rocketing share price this year has created an army of millionaires - self-named 'Teslanaires'. Shares in Elon Musk's electric car firm have risen more than 700% during 2020 to become the world's most valuable car company. But it's been a roller-coaster ride for long-term investors with wild swings since it joined the stock market a decade ago. For those who have stuck with Tesla, it has been a very wealthy journey. This month was a milestone for the car company as it joined the S&P 500, an index of the biggest stocks in the US which includes the likes of Apple, Microsoft and Facebook. Tesla shares rocketed and it became one of the top 10 most valued companies on the index. Tesla stock is now worth more than the combined valuations of General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Toyota. Yet, Tesla makes just a fraction of the cars of its more established rivals. "Tesla is a very polarising stock. It has its fans, many of whom do own Tesla cars, and its fair share of critics, particularly in the financial community, who say the company's shares are overvalued," said Will Rhind, chief executive at investment firm GraniteShares. "Investors that bought shares early on, have done very well and some are now millionaires as a result." Much of Tesla's share price growth has come from its improving car sales, boosted by strong demand from China and hopes of subsidies for electric vehicles. The shift towards electric cars globally has put car companies like Tesla in the sweet spot. Many investors also believe there is strong growth to come from other parts of Tesla's business including its self-driving software and battery power storage. Overvalued? Tesla went public in June 2010 at a price of $17 per share. This week, the price stood at more than $650 - and that's even after a 5-for-1 stock split earlier this year that boosted the number of shares in circulation. Given its rapid share price rise this year, even more surprising given it has come during a global pandemic, Tesla critics say it is overvalued. In a research note earlier this month, analysts at JPMorgan wrote:"Tesla shares are in our view and by virtually every conventional metric not only overvalued, but dramatically so". But other investment experts argue not to look at Tesla as just a car company. "Part of the appeal of Tesla for many investors is that it is more than a car company and the success of their batteries will open many revenue streams," said Edward Moya, a senior market analyst at OANDA. "Think about the role Tesla is playing in the transition from fossil fuels to electric power and storage. In that sense, the question for investors today is how do you value the technology of tomorrow?" added Mr Rhind. Tesla also sells solar panels and back-up residential power for homes. "Teslanaires" There is an army of fans who believe strongly in Tesla and predict the share price to continue rising, based on a bright future for Elon Musk's car firm. Los Angeles-based engineer Jason DeBolt's first investment in Tesla was 2,500 shares which cost him $19,000. "I first started investing in Tesla in 2013 after purchasing a Tesla Model S and going on a factory tour," he said. Since then, he has been buying more shares, and the 15,000 he now owns are worth around $10m. He agreed it has been a roller-coaster ride as a long-term investor and that "it was very difficult seeing the media attack Elon and Tesla. That was worse for me than the share price decline, which I knew would eventually bounce back." Mr DeBolt is a member of the Tesla Shareholders Club and regularly chats with other investors via the Facebook group. New York-based Scott Tisdale began investing in Tesla when he first laid eyes on the Model S back in 2013 and has built up a holding of around 4,000 shares which are currently worth around $2.8m. "I am not finished investing in them yet because I think their real story is just about to begin and people have been saying the stock is 'overvalued' since before the time I began to buy it," he said. "As amazing as it is to be included in this growing group of 'Teslanaires', it is almost as satisfying to be able to tell all the naysayers 'I told you so.'" The road ahead Experts say it is unlikely Tesla's share price will see growth of more than 700% again next year, limiting the number of new Teslanaires created. "They also point to growing competition from the likes of Apple which has revitalised plans to build an electric car along with Chinese rivals. "Tesla's competition has bigger pockets and can afford to take bigger risk," added OANDA's Mr Moya. Investment experts also caution about investing in a single stock and recommend funds that spread your money across a number of companies.
  8. The lessons she intends to impart are clear: "I encourage you to be kind. I do this to set the example I wish to with the tremendous privilege I have in giving you this commencement speech today" Speaking to the Class of 2020, pop star Lady Gaga admitted at the outset that the recent emergency has altered her speech. “Two weeks ago, I recorded a very different commencement speech to help celebrate the wonderful accomplishment that is your graduation. My speech at that time reflected and referenced to the shared experience of the COVID-19 global pandemic that has devastated the world this year and how important it is to be a force of kindness in the world as you take the next step forward in your promising lives,” she said. She spoke on the issues she considered while writing her new speech. “In rewriting my speech, I asked myself how I viewed racism and America as it relates to graduation. When I looked past the rage that I feel about the systemic oppression and physical and emotional violence that is tortured the black community endlessly, my mind turned to nature. When I think about racism in America, I imagine a broad forest filled densely with tall trees, trees as old as this country itself, trees that were planted with racist seeds, trees that grew prejudiced branches and oppressive leaves and mangled roots that buried and entrenched themselves deep within the soil, forming a web so well developed and so entangled that pushes back when we try to look clearly at how it really works. This forest is where we live. It’s who we are. It’s the morals and value system that we as a society have upheld and emboldened for centuries.” The lessons she intends to impart this time are clear: “I encourage you to be kind... I do this to set the example I wish to with the tremendous privilege I have in giving you this commencement speech today…let’s also listen. If we don’t listen, we don’t learn.”
  9. A bus has been attacked in eastern Syria, killing at least 28 people, reportedly soldiers. Syrian state media said the bus was targeted on Wednesday in the restive Deir al-Zour province, saying it was "citizens" killed. But other sources including a monitoring group said soldiers were on board, giving a higher death toll. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) attributed the attack to the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, saying 37 soldiers died. Citing sources, the SOHR said the attack was a "well-planned ambush by Islamic State members, targeting three buses carrying pro-regime militiamen and soldiers". Other sources cited by Reuters also said the buses carried Syrian state troops. IS fighters and Syrian forces loyal to the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad often clash in the area, near the ancient city of Palmyra. In 2014, IS imposed its brutal rule on millions of people, at one stage controlling 88,000 sq km (34,000 sq miles) of territory stretching from western Syria to eastern Iraq. After five years of fighting, local forces backed by the US and its allies managed to wrest back all the territory controlled by IS. IS was declared territorially defeated in Syria and Iraq in March 2019. But its presence has endured in parts of Syria, which has been racked by a civil war since 2011 and IS cells continue to launch attacks. If confirmed the latest attack would be the deadliest this year carried out by the group, the SOHR said.
