You know those dystopian notions of seas boiling over thanks to climate change? Well, China has a neat idea to accelerate a process which is already giving us the warmest sea surface temps on record. Heating up the oceans directly with computers. OK, that's rather facetious; there have been numerous studies into such an endeavour, with Microsoft running a similar setup for two years near the Orkney Islands just off Scotland with some ecological success. But China has reportedly begun construction on what's claimed to be the world's first undersea data center. Allegedly, once complete the facility will have the computing power of "six million conventional personal computers." It's unclear exactly what that means or what the hardware involved comprises. But it will be made of of no fewer than 100 of the huge looking "nodes" pictured above, each of which weighs an incredible 1,300 tons. However, you slice it, then, it's a lot of kit being submerged 35m under water off the coast of Sanya, Hainan province, China.Central to the entire premise is using sea water as the primary coolant. It's said that this will save a hefty 122 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually on cooling compared with a conventional on-land data center. It would be interesting to know how the net warming footprint compares between this approach and electrically powered air-cooling solutions of existing data centers. The thermal impact of a single server farm would just be a drop in the ocean, if you'll pardon the pun. Though if there were thousands of such nodes that might be a different matter. This isn't the first time we've heard of computer servers being dumped in the sea for cooling purposes. But this Chinese installation does seem to be on a rather unprecedented and epic scale. Exactly how practical all this is, well, that's an open question. Swapping out dead CPUs, SSDs or whole servers would, we assume, be off the cards with this kind of installation. In the Microsoft experiment which finished in 2020 it sealed the undersea chamber, filling it with dry nitrogen which made for a far less corrosive atmosphere than an oxygen-rich one, improving reliability over a land-based equivalent. There's no indication here that the new server farm is doing the same thing, but the nodes or modules are apparently each designed to run for 25 years and perhaps the very long term idea is they can be individually recovered and serviced. Anyway, the full 100 nodes are slated to have been installed by 2025, so if you pop out for a dip around then and find it's a little warmer than you expected, well, you'll know why. https://www.pcgamer.com/china-redefines-cpu-water-cooling-with-an-huge-130000-ton-data-center-under-the-sea/

Minister of State for the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and United Nations, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, visited Morocco from 8 to 9 May 2023. He attended the fourth UK-Morocco bilateral Strategic Dialogue, following and complementing the UK-Morocco Association Council held in Rabat on 16 February. During his visit, Lord Ahmad visited and prayed at the iconic Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, as well as meeting British business representatives based there. On 9 May, Lord Ahmad co-chaired the ministerial session of the annual UK-Morocco Strategic Dialogue with host, Morocco’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita. As reflected in their Joint Declaration, the ministers reviewed the deepening collaboration between the UK and Morocco and identified priorities for the next year, under the 4 pillars of cooperation: political, economic, security and defence, and education and culture. This collaboration includes growing bilateral cooperation in the health and agricultural sectors, as well as on climate, energy and sustainable finance. The Ministers signed a ‘Strategic Cooperation Framework on Climate action, Clean energy and Green growth’. It also includes: *ongoing exchanges of expertise, such as the joint defence exercises, ‘Jebel Sahara’ and ‘African Lion’, both held in 2022 * collaboration between law enforcement agencies on border security, hostage negotiations, and counter-terrorism efforts The ministers also discussed regional and international issues of common interest. These included the situation in Sudan and in Libya, developments in Israel and the OPTs, the ongoing global implications of the Russia-Ukraine war, and food security in Africa. On completing his visit, Lord Ahmad said: This has been a fruitful visit which has built upon the strong relationship between our 2 countries. It follows on from our collaboration as Guest of Honour at the 15th edition of SIAM last week in Meknes, and we were honoured to have hosted HRH Princess Lalla Meryem at the Coronation of HM King Charles III last week. I am confident that this relationship will continue to thrive, going forward, as our 2 Kingdoms work in partnership on political, economic and security matters, and connect our people and cultures. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-and-morocco-partnership-thriving

India added 664 animal species to its faunal database in the year 2022. These comprise 467 new species and 197 new records [species found in India for the first time]. The country also added 339 new plant taxa – 186 taxa that are new to science and 153 taxa as new distributional records from the country in 2022. The details of new discoveries and new records were released by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav in Kolkata on July 1.The faunal discoveries have been compiled in a publication by Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) titled Animal Discoveries - New Species and New Records 2023, whereas floral discoveries are contained in Plant Discoveries 2022 published by the Botanical Survey of India (BSI).Among the major fauna species discovered are three new species and one new record of mammals; two new records of birds; 30 new species and two new records of reptiles; six new species and one new record of amphibia; and 28 new species and eight new records of fish. The mammal species discovered include two species of bats – Miniopterus phillipsi, a long-fingered bat, and Glischropus meghalayanus, a bamboo-dwelling bat – both from Meghalaya. Sela macaque (Macaca selai), a new macaque species discovered in the western and central Arunachal Pradesh and named after the Sela Pass, is also among the highlights of Animal Discoveries 2022.The new records include Macaca leucogenys, a white-cheeked macaque earlier found in Modog, southeastern Tibet, and sighted in India for the first time in 2022 in West Siang, Arunachal Pradesh. The list also includes Ficedula zanthopygia, the yellow-rumped flycatcher, earlier known from Mongolia, Transbaikal, southern China, Korea, western Japan, and found last year in Narcondam Island of the Andaman archipelago. The maximum number of new faunal discoveries has been of invertebrates with 583 species, while vertebrates constitute 81 species. Insects dominate among invertebrates with 384 species, whereas fish dominated among vertebrates, followed by reptiles, amphibia, mammals and aves.In 2022, the maximum new discoveries were recorded from Kerala. As many as 82 animal species new to science and 15 new records were from Kerala, which contributes to 14.6% of the new species and new records. Karnataka followed with 64 new species and 24 new records accounting for 13.2%. Tamil Nadu saw 71 new discoveries and 13 new records contributing to 12.6% of all the new discoveries and new records in the country. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands contributed to about 8.4% of the discoveries, whereas 7.6 % discoveries were from West Bengal and 5.7% from Arunachal Pradesh. With the new discoveries and new records, the fauna diversity of the country increased to 1,03,922. Speaking at the launch of these publications, Mr. Yadav said that work done by the ZSI is critical to the faunal diversity of the country. “We must protect the diversity for our own sake,” he said. ZSI Director Dhriti Banerjee said the year 2022 witnessed the highest number of new discoveries in the last 10 years. https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/india-adds-664-animal-species-to-its-faunal-database-in-2022-339-taxa-to-its-flora/article67030167.ece

King Mohammed VI has named Samira Sitail as ambassador to France, filling a post that has laid empty for months amid a diplomatic crisis between Rabat and Paris. The announcement of Samira Sitail’s nomination on Thursday came as something of a surprise since she has no background in diplomacy. The 59-year old was head of news then deputy director general at Moroccan public broadcasting channel 2M. She takes over from Mohamed Benchaaboum whose duties were terminated on 19 January without a successor being named. While Sitail’s CV is very different from career diplomats, her high-level experience in the media could serve her well in her new diplomatic role. “It’s an unusual nomination, but which most probably corresponds to a certain logic, because Morocco wants to make its voice in France more audible,” journalist and political scientist Abdellah Tourabi told Le Monde daily. “She knows the media, knows how to talk to them and has a network in the press and culture that goes beyond the purely political sphere.” Outspoken Sitail was born in France and holds dual nationality, but is not well known here. However she gained a certain notoriety for her comments following the 8 September earthquake in the region of Marrakech, which killed close to 3,000 people. Macron urges Morocco to accept French aid as death toll nears 3,000 Interviewed by BFM television she slammed the suggestion by some French media that Morocco had rejected France's offer of help in favour of the UK and Spain. “It’s very serious to say that Morocco refuses a country’s help, it’s even a call for Moroccan people to revolt" against their government and the monarchy, she said, underlying the kingdom's sovereignty. Tense relations Sitail takes over at a time when relations between Rabat and Paris are at a low point. They've been under strain since Macron tried to get closer to Algeria, which broke off diplomatic relations with Morocco in 2021, citing "hostile acts". Morocco has criticised France for not following the US and Israel in recognising its sovereignty over the Western Sahara. Morocco's king thanks Israeli PM for backing claim on Western Sahara Relations have also been soured through the 2020 Pegasus spywhere investigation which claimed that Morocco's intelligence services had used Israeli cellphone software to spy on several French public figures, possibly including Macron. Last year France slashed the number of visas granted to Moroccans by half and local media have reported that despite the resumption of consular services, people were still experiencing delays in appointments and visa applications were rejected without justification. France slashes visas for Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco in row over illegal migration In the latest spat, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in January calling on the Moroccan authorities to “respect freedom of expression” having accused the kingdom of intimidating and harassing journalists and activists. Morocco’s political class, and some media, perceived French MEPs close to President Emmanuel Macron as having helped orchestrate the resolution. Sitail now has the hefty task of trying to rebuild confidence between Rabat and Paris, but at least she knows both countries well. https://www.rfi.fr/en/africa/20231020-morocco-names-samira-sitail-woman-former-journalist-as-ambassador-to-france

Remember actor Kumail Nanjiani who starred in the Silicon Valley television show? Handsome, sure, but his narrow build and ill-fitting clothes made sense for someone who stayed inside all day coding a data compression algorithm. There were even jokes about how unattractive he was, poor guy. A few years after the show's premiere, Najiani was cast in one of the lead roles in Marvel's Eternals movie adaptation, almost against type. Like countless stars before him (Chris Pratt, Brie Larson, Hugh Jackman), he worked with Hollywood trainers and dietitians to dramatically transform his physique, so much so that he landed the cover of Men's Health, bulging bicep vein and capped shoulders on full display. That's what came to mind when we met the Mercedes-AMG CLE53, a car that could provide a lot more appeal than a BMW M440i or an Audi S5. The folks at Mercedes-Benz introduced the CLE-Class in July 2023 as a replacement to coupe and cabriolet versions of the C- and E-Class, which means the CLE53 takes the place of the outgoing C43 and E53 coupes. The standard version of the slinky new two-door look elegant if a bit understated, and from behind the wheel it clearly prioritizes comfort and quietude over driving engagement. As is the case with most vehicles that wear the three-pointed star, that's where the folks in Affalterbach come in. The first change we noticed was the result of the CLE's body-building regimen. This AMG-modified coupe is 2.3 inches wider at the front and 3.0 inches wider in the back, which makes for a striking presence when you see it in person. This isn't some tacked-on butt implant and shoulder pad situation either, either—the widened body shell looks like the result of lifting heavy and drowning in protein shakes. Rad wheels, too. AMG also installs a creased power-domed hood, tweaked front fascia treatment, and circular quad exhaust finishers. Buyers can further augment the transformation with a AMG Performance Studio package (pictured) that adds additional aerodynamic touches including a more pronounced trunk lid spoiler and rear diffuser. For even more aggression, seek one of two blackout AMG Night packages or either AMG Carbon Fiber package. Thankfully, AMG has blessed the CLE-Class with the strength of an amateur powerlifter to match its newfound muscle mass. This isn't some bonkers plug-in hybrid four-cylinder, either, but rather a combination of old-school grunt and modern training techniques. Folks who shell out for the CLE53 get a version of the mild-hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that's included in the CLE450. Difference is, the AMG version uses an electric supercharger improve engine response across the rev range and bump output to 443 hp and 413 lb-ft (or 443 lb-ft with overboost), decent but not world-changing bumps over the non-AMG and outgoing E53 I-6s or the previous-gen C43's twin-turbo V-6. We'd be remiss not to note the AMG powertrain, including its wet-clutch nine-speed automatic, is notably more powerful and technically impressive than those from its BMW and Audi competitors. That said, those peers have the advantage of motivating less weight. More Than A Nice Body Of course, the AMG experience is more than just engine and aesthetics. The folks from Affalterbach need to do more than produce a more powerful CLE to properly compete with the M440i and S5 Coupe. Every CLE53 is fitted with AMG Ride Control suspension, which combines steel springs with dampers that continually adjust to the road surface. Drivers can choose Comfort, Sport, or Sport+ damper mapping via a small round digital display mounted to the dual split-spoke steering wheel or through the central infotainment screen. Variable AWD is also standard, and it's a rear-biased system that completely decouples the front axle in situations that don't require additional traction at the front end. The driver also has multiple stability control settings to further bias torque to the rear. Unlike the C43 and E53 it replaces, the CLE53 comes standard with rear steering, a feature that isn't available in either of its German peers. The system angles the rear wheels opposite of the fronts below 60 mph to aid maneuverability (tighter turning circle in parking lots, rotation in tight, fast corners) and steers with the front tires at higher speeds for superior stability. Rear steer aggression varies depending on the drive mode. Folks who want to push the CLE53 to its limits (and are impatient for the likely upcoming CLE63) will want to tick the box for the AMG Dynamic Plus package. That's the only way to unlock the previously 63-exclusive Race drive mode, which delivers maximum aggression and has a Drift mode function that fully deactivates traction and stability control to allow for smokey tail-out hoonery. Folks eager to get behind the wheel of AMG's new muscle coupe won't have to wait long. If you're interested, wait until these cars hit dealers in summer 2024 so you can take a test drive before deciding between the CLE53 and a BMW M440i or an Audi S5. As for price, AMG has kept its lips tight, but we can make an educated guess. The 2023 AMG C43 started just shy of $64,000 and the E53 set buyers back a little over $85,000 if they went light on the options. Split the difference and add a bit on top to account for inflation (and a bit of corporate greed) and you should be able to score a CLE53 for under $80K. We expect a convertible variant to be announced in the coming months. https://www.motortrend.com/news/2024-mercedes-amg-cle-53-first-look-review/

While most of the elite Flat riders are either enjoying some rare downtime during the winter, or plying their trade on foreign soil, Murphy will take up a new challenge in Dorset. The 28-year-old is fresh from enjoying another successful campaign on the level, which yielded six Group One winners, including Classic success aboard Mawj in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in May. The 28-year-old is fresh from enjoying another successful campaign on the level, which yielded six Group One winners, including Classic success aboard Mawj in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in May. His mount on Thursday is the Cian Collins-trained Irish raider Lets Do This, who will contest the Danny McNab Bookmakers "National Hunt" Novices' Handicap Hurdle.Explaining his decision, the Killarney-born jockey said: "My uncle is Jim Culloty, who rode winners of the Cheltenham Gold Cup (Best Mate), Grand National (Bindaree) and Irish Grand National (Timbera) and also trained a winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup (Lord Windermere). "I worked with him in my teens, so jumps racing has always been part of my life and it has always been a burning ambition of mine to ride in a jumps race."I took out a jumps licence earlier in the year, as at one stage it looked like I might get a ride in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. "The programme of Flat racing means it is unlikely that I will be able to ride over hurdles often, but this opportunity arose as I know the trainer and owner of Lets Do This well. It is only a fairly low-grade handicap hurdle on Thursday, so it seemed like a good place to start. "I have been schooling horses to prepare, though have not yet ridden Lets Do This." Murphy is set to be well supported at Wincanton, adding: "Jim might be coming along to see me ride and my friend Denis O'Regan, who recently retired, might be travelling over from Ireland. "I'll be walking the course when I get to Wincanton to see what it's like and will try and seek the advice of the jump jockeys riding there. I am really looking forward to the challenge."Several leading Flat jockeys have enjoyed success under both codes, perhaps most notably the late, great Lester Piggott, who partnered 20 winners over hurdles, including the 1954 Triumph Hurdle hero Prince Charlemagne. More recently, the likes of Richard Hughes, Jamie Spencer and Tom Queally have combined the two disciplines and Murphy hopes to add his name to the list. He said: "It would be an amazing feeling to get a winner over jumps and I'm not looking beyond Thursday at the moment - I just hope I don't embarrass myself!" https://www.skysports.com/racing/news/12040/13023318/oisin-murphy-multiple-champion-flat-jockey-set-for-hurdles-debut-on-thursday-at-wincanton

ISLAMABAD — Pakistani officials said Tuesday that the United States did not object to Islamabad’s deportation of Afghan nationals who are illegally residing in the country but requested the process be slowed down during winter. The crackdown on undocumented foreigners, including 1.7 million Afghans, came under discussion at a meeting with a visiting U.S. delegation led by Julieta Valls Noyes, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Po[CENSORED]tion, Refugees and Migration. A Pakistani official privy to the talks said that the U.S. side sought to prevent the deportation of around 25,000 “vulnerable” individuals who fled the Taliban’s August 2021 takeover in neighboring Afghanistan and could be eligible for relocation to or resettlement in the United States. “The government of Pakistan doesn't want to deport any vulnerable Afghan, irrespective of whether someone appears on the U.S. prospective resettlement list or any other country,” the official told VOA on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to share details of the talks publicly. “Pakistan is concerned over the lengthy resettlement process the U.S. has adopted,” he said. “One thing is clear: The U.S. didn't oppose Pakistan’s deportation policy. It, however, pleaded for going slow during the harsh winters,” the Pakistani official told VOA. VOA reached out to the State Department to seek a response to Pakistani assertions that Washington is not opposed to the deportations of Afghans but did not get a response immediately. Neither Pakistani nor U.S. officials formally released details of the meeting Noyes held with Asif Durrani, Pakistan’s special representative on Afghanistan. “Good to visit Pakistani Foreign Ministry and see Special Representative for Afghanistan @AsifDurrani20 again today for discussion on Afghan refugees, protection, and resettlement,” Noyes said on X, formerly known as Twitter. Durrani also shared a few details about his talks with the U.S. delegation on his X social media platform. “We discussed issues concerning Afghan refugees and their resettlement,” he said.A pre-visit U.S. State Department statement said that during her four-day visit, Noyes would meet with government officials and nongovernmental and international organization partners to “discuss shared efforts to protect vulnerable individuals and accelerate safe, efficient relocation and resettlement of Afghan refugees in the U.S. immigration pipelines.” Official data shows that Pakistan’s deportation drive has forced more than 400,000 people to return to Afghanistan since mid-September. The United Nations and global human rights groups have criticized the crackdown and urged Islamabad to urgently halt it, noting that Afghanistan suffers from a dire humanitarian crisis stemming from years of war and natural disasters. Pakistani authorities defend the deportation drive, linking a recent surge in deadly, nationwide terrorist attacks to the undocumented Afghan po[CENSORED]tion. In a separate statement on X, Noyes said she held an “important conversation” with representatives of the U.N. refugee agency in Islamabad and discussed “our shared commitment to support vulnerable Afghans in Pakistan." American and NATO troops withdrew from Afghanistan in August 2021 when the then-insurgent Taliban seized power from a Washington-backed government in Kabul. They also evacuated tens of thousands of Afghans who worked with the international military mission during its two-decades-long presence in the country, fearing they would face Taliban reprisals. Pakistan’s otherwise close relations with the Taliban government have come under severe strain over the deportation drive. De facto Afghan authorities have denounced the policy as unjust and inhumane, saying it has ended the goodwill the neighboring country earned for hosting millions of refugees from conflict-torn Afghanistan over the past four decades. The Pakistani government says the country still hosts more than 2.2 million documented Afghans, including 1.4 million legal refugees. They are not the subjects of the ongoing crackdown. https://www.voanews.com/a/pakistan-official-us-did-not-oppose-deportation-of-afghans-in-country-illegally/7385320.html

There are a lot of advantages to software test automation, but sometimes it is more prudent for startups to stick with manual testing. Here's a look at the pros and cons of both types of testing for startups. No company today can afford to ship broken software-based products. Even if you're not in a highly regulated industry, bad quality assurance (QA) can decimate sales and prompt job losses, reputational damage, customer loss, and even loss of life. QA sounds like a given, but software testing is growing more complicated, thanks to the expansion from just desktop applications to web, mobile, and embedded applications. Startups ordinarily test a large amount of their software code manually. After enough expansion, they're usually unable to keep up with the volume. This is where software test automation does wonders, and conventional wisdom suggests you might as well always use it. And why not, right? Related: What Are Software Testing and Quality Assurance? But as impressive as test automation is, does a startup always need automated testing? Are there, in fact, times when manual testing is more prudent? And if you decide to switch to automation as a startup, how do you do it? When is the right time? What's Your Company's Maturity? Ask yourself: Are you a startup whose product is still in flux? You may not be ready for automated testing if underlying frameworks and target platforms are changing by the week. Startups move extremely quickly when starting from zero, often pushing function to the max while they attract investment, introducing a colossal amount of new code weekly. Doing this will likely bring numerous foundational changes to features, UI, and the like. Automated testing, in this case, doesn't necessarily help because the process of creating build automation test scripts takes time. If you must do this from scratch every time your app undergoes significant change, you're wasting developer resources. Conversely, relying on manual testing will only prove possible if your app development stabilizes and you gain enough scale. For example, suppose one of Europe's most prominent industrial players has had a product on the market for over a decade. In that case, its enormity probably means nobody wants to change much under the hood out of fear it will break. Automated testing makes lots of sense in that caseThe other thing to understand is that automated and manual testing are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Each has its merits, but they also require vastly different skill sets. Suppose a startup company is launching a food delivery app. The QA process would look something like this: Click on buttons or links to see if they work correctly Check if the users can enter data into text fields See if search bars, drop-down menus, and navigation are working In a scenario like this, manual testers would typically involve non-scripters, non-programming savvy individuals. And that's a good thing. You don't want those testers to make assumptions a programmer would make about how things run. You want them to look at a GUI, not overthink it, and use it like a "normal" human consumer. This approach reveals entirely different problems. Automated testing, on the other hand, uses scripted sequences to execute a test case scenario, hunting for bugs/defects — the goal being to simplify manual labor into scripts that can be executed repetitively anytime. What Should You Test Manually vs. Automatically? Any startup dipping into automated testing must first figure out which test cases to automate. As a rule of thumb, if you want to maximize test automation, you should generally automate these: Tests vulnerable to human error Tests that are repetitive and monotonous Extensive tests necessitating many data sets Time-consuming tests Business-critical or high-risk tests that must be completed consistently Tests that must be performed on multiple hardware or software platforms More specifically, these are better left automated to save time and effort: Regression tests: These are extensive, recurring, and dependent on the same input variables. Data-driven tests: Many functional tests require testing using multiple divergent data sets to evaluate a range of positive and negative cases. Performance testing suites: Automated testing can be used to speed up system performance testing under varying conditions. API tests: Automated tests find flaws faster since they trigger API regressions whenever the API is modified. That said, some test cases are more effectively executed manually: Exploratory testing: Real users explore programs differently from standardized routines. Exploratory testing can't be automated since it requires human cognition. UX testing: Automated tools can't always capture intangibles like how people feel about a product, how likely they are to utilize it, and how aesthetically pleasing it is. Testing accessibility: This is best accomplished through manual testing, which examines the user's interaction with the process or application. You can augment this manual testing with application analytics tools that provide insights into how people use your application or device. How Would You Transition from Manual to Automated Testing? What about when your startup's software reaches a scale that makes manual testing impractical? Well, the transition isn't an on/off switch. You have to investigate tools early (and believe me, some organizations start this process far too late). The good news is you don't have to wait to get started on testing approaches that complement automation like static code analysis, which reviews code in programming without executing it. Many free alternatives are a great way to dip into automation until you adopt more advanced tools. You should generally consider these factors when switching to test automation: Design the right framework for your team Your test suite's effectiveness relies on your framework. The right framework depends on your programmers' skill set, your software development procedures, and nature of the software. For example, when Specsavers built out an extensive portfolio of in-house Java/web applications on Linux and Windows, they needed a GUI testing tool that required no scripting experience from staff. They chose an automated GUI testing tool that let them specify tests that needed performing by simply entering data into spreadsheets that could then drive GUI tests. Choose the right tools Think about future objectives when your startup scales up, not just current goals. Will the tool still exist in five years? Are new releases issued frequently? What does support look like? It might be tempting to pick low-code/no-code toolkits, aka "the easy tools." Many companies initially gravitate toward these tools because they're easy to learn, but some revert back within a year because they lack the flexibility and robustness to help them achieve sufficient coverage testing. And while lots of free, open source test automation tools exist, be cautious. While significant, they don't necessarily provide troubleshooting support, and should you need to comply with certification standards, these tools won't be compliant with regulations out of the box. Getting this wrong could result in a costly and lengthy time-to-market process for your product. Set manageable goals and a quick learning curve Moving from manual to automation isn't easy, so start with digestible objectives. Start with automating the most-used regression test suite or the longest and most tedious one. Identify and eliminate recurring bugs, then gradually improve automation to cover more testing areas. Measure the automated testing tool's performance When you start using an automated testing tool, measure its performance! You don't want to use a tool that doesn't meet your testing goals. You can begin by determining: How fast the turnaround time is for executing tests compared to before using the tool. Whether time spent developing test suites has shortened. What Quality Assurance Certifications Do I Need? Whether you're in a regulated industry (like safety-critical sectors, e.g., automotive, manufacturing, healthcare) or you want to demonstrate to customers that you meet industry standards and quality practices, there are several certifications you can earn. They're usually a great way to evaluate software vendors. ISO 9000: International standards for establishing and maintaining an adequate quality assurance (QA) system for businesses. To be ISO 9000 certified, an organization must be audited on its functions, products, services, and processes. Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level: Used to analyze the maturity of an organization's processes and provide recommendations for process improvement. TMMI: A five-level model that provides a framework to help companies assess the maturity of their testing processes and optimize them. Software testing can be daunting for a startup — after all, it's a critical factor in the market success of a product and all future products a company might release. But a good software quality assurance management strategy that follows best practices, with a strong focus on testing, can alleviate a lot of the stress and ensure on-time, repeated releases that meet and exceed your users' expectations. https://www.itprotoday.com/industry-perspectives/when-should-startup-test-software-manually

Saber Interactive, a division of Embracer Group, has confirmed that it has laid off employees at its New World Interactive studio, the developer of Insurgency: Sandstorm. Word of the layoffs first came as a rumor that New World Interactive was being closed outright, reported on Twitter by Nick Calandra of Second Wind. In a statement shared with PC Gamer, a Saber Interactive representative confirmed the layoffs but said the studio has not been closed. "Saber can confirm there have been restructuring changes involving our New World Interactive subsidiary," the rep said. "This reorganization has unfortunately resulted in layoffs at the studio. We are working to fill existing open roles within Saber with individuals affected by these changes wherever feasible and we will be providing severance packages to those employees impacted."Saber didn't indicate how many employees have been laid off as a result of the studio changes, but the rep said work on Insurgency: Sandstorm, New World's hit military shooter, and "unannounced future projects" will continue. The layoffs at New World Interactive are the latest in what has been a thoroughly catastrophic year for Embracer Group and, more to the point, its employees. After a period of rapid growth that saw the company balloon into a legitimate gaming colossus—a stretch that included its acquisition of New World Interactive in 2020—the last-minute collapse of a $2 billion investment deal in May threw the company into a tailspin that's resulted in widespread layoffs and studio closures. In November, Embracer reported that it had cut roughly 5% of its global workforce, totalling approximately 900 employees; since then, it's laid off 50 more employees from Chorus developer Fishlabs along with the unknown number from New World Interactive, and is reportedly looking at closing Free Radical Design, the studio it resurrected in 2021 to make a new TimeSplitters game. But it's not just Embracer: The videogame industry as a whole has suffered a virtually unprecedented number of layoffs in 2023, impacting small studios and large tech companies alike. The most recent example occurred just yesterday, when Electronic Arts announced layoffs at F1 developer Codemasters "to meet evolving business needs and priorities." https://www.pcgamer.com/the-embracer-spiral-continues-as-insurgency-sandstorm-studio-new-world-interactive-lays-off-employees/
