Former president Donald Trump’s political PAC raised about $75 million in the first half of this year as he trumpeted the false notion that the 2020 election was stolen from him, but the group has not devoted funds to help finance the ongoing ballot review in Arizona or to push for similar endeavors in other states, according to people familiar with the finances. Instead, the Save America leadership PAC — which has few limits on how it can spend its money — has paid for some of the former president’s travel, legal costs and staff, along with other expenses, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the group’s inner workings. The PAC has held onto much of its cash. Even as he assiduously tracks attempts by his allies to cast doubt on the integrity of last year’s election, Trump has been uninterested in personally bankrolling the efforts, relying on other entities and supporters to fund the endeavors, they said. The tactic allows Trump to build up a war chest to use in the 2022 midterms on behalf of candidates he favors — and to stockpile cash for another potential White House run, an unprecedented maneuver for a former president. In the meantime, the months-long audit of Maricopa County’s ballots in Arizona — which is expected to cost millions — is being paid for primarily by nonprofit entities that do not disclose their donors and private individuals such as former Overstock chief executive Patrick Byrne. A lawsuit seeking a similar audit in Fulton County, Ga., has been financed by small donations, according to the group that brought the claim. A spokeswoman for Trump did not answer questions on whether the group is considering putting money into the ballot review efforts. The group will have to publicly disclose its fundraising and spending for the first half of the year by July 31. Since leaving office, Trump has repeatedly pushed for various states to overturn the election results, sending out a blizzard of statements with unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud. He has consulted with state officials in Arizona, Pennsylvania and Georgia, and has described state ballot reviews as the key to prove he won the 2020 election. And his political group has repeatedly urged donors to give by claiming that Trump is working to protect their vote — fundraising pitches that his advisers say remain the most lucrative. “We need you to join the fight to SECURE OUR ELECTIONS!” reads one Facebook ad. On Saturday, Trump is scheduled to speak in Phoenix at an event called the “Protect our Elections Rally,” hosted by a group founded by conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The former president has repeatedly made false claims of irregularities in the Arizona vote, asserting in a statement this month that it amounted “to hundreds of thousands of votes or, many times what is necessary for us to have won.” The Washington Post

DURBAN, South Africa — South Africa was already beset by rampant poverty. The pandemic exacerbated the struggle for many of the country’s poorest. Now weeks of riots have left stores torched, shelves empty and many hungry. President Cyril Ramaphosa has reassured the country that “immediate food relief” was being distributed in the wake of deadly unrest that saw access to food disrupted after trucks, warehouses and shops were burned and pillaged. But in towns around Durban, the hard-hit capital of the KwaZulu-Natal province, that relief wasn’t to be found. “I don’t know how they operate, I don’t know how they work, I don’t know where they are,” Patrick Bilai, a pastor, said of the government. “If we wait for them then we’ll start seeing more graves.” As he stood at the end of a road in a pristine beach town on Sunday, Bilai told NBC News he felt close to tears as he watched a group of volunteers from a restaurant chain load up his car with food. “I’ve had old women come and knock on my door and they fall down and they say they are hungry,” Bilai said. “This is a lifeline for someone. Tonight someone will go home and eat.” While South Africans deliberate the root causes of the recent unrest — gross inequality, political rivalries and historic cultural divides — a common theme is government failure. The riots began as demonstrations over the arrest of the country’s former president Jacob Zuma, who faces a swath of corruption charges related to a 1990s arms deal and an inquiry into corruption during a nine-year tenure that ended in 2018. His reign cost the country’s economy more than an estimated $35 billion — about a tenth of the overall gross domestic product — if not double that, Ramaphosa said at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London in 2019. In that time, an additional 3 million South Africans slipped below the poverty line, according to government data. It means the poor account for more than half of the country’s 58 million people. Hunger and malnourishment rates have also nearly doubled. The 1.8 million people without enough food in 2008 increased to 3.8 million by 2020, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization. Nearly a quarter of children are stunted — falling behind in physical growth and mental development because of inadequate nutrition. “The picture was bleak to start with,” said Lise Korsten, co-director of the Centre of Excellence in Food Security at the University of Pretoria. Blaming the poor for the recent unrest would be unfair, Korsten said. But it’s easy to see how people in desperate circumstances could be mani[CENSORED]ted to act out for political or criminal purposes. “A hungry adult is an angry adult,” she said. NBC News

It's fitting that Pokemon’s most significant evolutionary leap in its 20-year history is on a mobile platform, which mirrors its humble origins on the Game Boy. We’re going outside with Pokemon Go, catching Pokemon with friends, fighting over gyms, and making new friends along the way. Much of Pokemon Go's augmented reality infrastructure was already in place thanks to developer Niantic’s location-based MMO mobile game, Ingress. Both games feature point-of-interest check-ins and territorial conflicts, except that Go features three teams compared to Ingress’ two, designated conflict zones are now gyms, and landmarks are called Pokestops. Assuming you’re in a densely po[CENSORED]ted area, you won’t have a problem growing your collection as there are Pokemon everywhere. The act of capturing these critters follows the single-thumb input of many po[CENSORED]r mobile games. Simulating a throwing motion, a forward swipe toward your target (with a bit of finesse for specific distances) is all it takes to trap basic Pokemon. It’s a credit to the diverse behaviors of these wild beasts that you can’t lackadaisically throw Pokeballs as you attempt to capture them--you have to factor whether the Pokemon can fly, jump, or deflect incoming Pokeballs. These pocket monsters litter the landscape often in accordance to their terrain. It’s not unheard of to come across a water-type Goldeen around a town square but they’re more abundant around large bodies of water. The simple act of leaving your familiar dwellings will open yourself to a wider, more diverse net of potential captures. This, along with the high gym count in cities, underscores the disadvantages of rural players, many of whom have relatively limited access to rare Pokemon. It is through rampant collecting that Go showcases much of its depth, especially to Pokemon novices. The chances of capturing the same monster with the exact same stats are astronomically low, which makes capturing multiples of the same Pokemon a sound tactic. This, along with the initial storage limit of 250 Pokemon, spurs you to make judgement calls on which ones to keep and which ones to recycle. Reminiscent of collectable card games, battling in a gym is a duel of stats and hoping your cumulative abilities outweigh your opponent’s. Health, weight, height, moveset, and type are all factors that go into a gym fight. The most crucial variable is a Pokemon's CP, which can be upgraded using candy and stardust, two currencies that you earn with each capture. There’s a satisfying sense of trainer ownership when planning a gym battle, to curate a squad and to carefully curate an order in which your Pokemon will fight. Pokemon Go stays true to the franchise’s strategic appeal, even if it doesn’t offer the conveniences of turn-based battles. There’s added depth in the actual battle, which plays out in real time. Careful timing is needed when attacking (screen tapping) and dodging (screen swipes), and your stats determine the effectiveness of your offensive moves as well your capacity to take hits. What makes these duels even more involved is the ability to gang up on a gym team with multiple concurrent battles. The opportunities to participate and excel in a group help lower the barrier to entry for latecomers. This is partly because the takeover of a gym is not determined by a single fight, but rather a series of encounters that could potentially wear down the gym owner over time. It’s a blessing that gym battles can be a collaborative effort since Pokemon Go offers little instruction on how to be victorious in these virtual face offs. The nuances and timing of attacks and dodges are learned through trial and error and sharing experiences with players in public. You won't learn advanced controls and tactics in the game like adding spin your Poke Ball to making special throws. It’s not ideal, but at least there is gratification in socializing with other players to figure out the game's esoteric mechanics. The sharing of notes, group capture sessions, and bonding through team battles are Pokemon Go’s social strengths and help fans ignore the current absence of a key series component: trading. While some form of trading is planned, it’s unfortunate that a feature synonymous with the series was not present at launch. One crucial design benefit of Pokemon Go is that its social draw isn’t limited to adversarial team battles. Collecting can be a communal effort because no one wild Pokemon is exclusive to the first person who captures it. Once a 60 kilogram Charmander with 260 CP shows up at the Starbucks on 4th and Main Street in San Francisco, every player has a fair opportunity to capture it. This experience can be greatly enhanced with lures, consumable items that attract more Pokemon to a set location. More Pokemon begets more people which can lead to new friendships. Beyond the bland map art and the limited trainer character design options is a lively world of animated icons for gyms and Pokestops. Niantic wisely focused their efforts here on the Pokemon themselves, particularly their dramatic and flashy evolution sequences. During capture events, they counter your Poke Ball throws with dodges and blocks, while they’re even livelier during gym battles. It’s also not uncommon to approach a gym that is currently in the midst of a power struggle, indicated by the amusing Looney Tunes-inspired whirlwind animation. When you join the fight, it truly feels like a team effort to see your buddy’s Pokemon battling at the far side of the arena. It’s too early to tell if Pokemon Go will be make a meaningful impact on the cardiovascular health of its users, but developer Niantic has the right idea in repurposing key elements of the franchise to suit real life exploration and movement. Much like in the mainline series, egg fertilization in Go relies on walking, running, or biking specific distances, whether that’s two kilometers or 10. This incubation process isn’t perfect. You can cheat in a car by driving slowly and since the game tracks your movements via GPS, running on a treadmill will not count. Pokemon Go’s strengths can’t hide the fact that its initial iteration is a buggy mess on all levels, from server and potential security issues to invisible trainers. Crashes can come during monster captures, GPS reconnections, and even when you’re taking a screenshot. One particularly upsetting issue is a bug that makes gym opponents invincible, which is especially unfair if you’ve exhausted your best Pokemon during this battle. These issues occur often enough to cause immense frustration but not enough to warrant giving up altogether. Compounding these issues is Go’s high battery consumption. Even with the AR camera turned off and power saving option turned on, it’s still possible to fully drain a year-old Samsung Galaxy S6 in less than two hours. Expect to invest in an external battery if you don’t own one already. Speaking of spending money, the in-game shop offers a collection of optional items, though they may only be valuable to truly ambitious players. Much of the gear can be acquired through general play, by leveling up, and checking in at landmarks. In classic free-to-play fashion, the majority of the shop items merely accelerate the monster collecting process, whether you’re using lures and incense to attract Pokemon or cracking lucky eggs for a temporary experience bonus. If Pokemon Go’s initial public reception is anything to go by, its ability to draw players from multiple generations and varied gaming backgrounds together is a game worthy of attention. When it works, Pokemon Go feels like a natural evolution for the series, very much a product of the times without making the mainline series obsolete. Its bugs and high battery consumption do not outweigh the old-but-new thrill of capturing Pikachu at a local park or vanquishing a Snorlax while conquering a gym.

Publisher: Ubisoft Developer: Ubisoft Toronto Release: October 29, 2020 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, PC), November 10, 2020 (Xbox Series X/S), November 12, 2020 (PlayStation 5) Reviewed on: Xbox Series X/S Also on: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, PC Watch Dogs Legion took the hacker franchise in a completely different direction, eschewing a traditional protagonist in favor of a thousand playable faces. While unique and enjoyable, I was left wanting a deeper connection to the playable characters that I grew alongside throughout the story. The Bloodline DLC delivers this by bringing back the original hacker himself: Aiden Pearce. And he brings nearly everything I wanted from the base Legion experience along for the ride. Bloodline sees the return of the original Watch Dogs protagonist, but now he’s older, a little wiser, and out of “the biz.” Until he’s drawn back in with the allure of supporting his nephew, Jackson, who is Aiden’s sister’s son that we met in the first game. Bloodline also brought back another familiar face – or more appropriately, a familiar mask – with Watch Dogs 2’s Wrench. The story begins with Aiden reluctantly taking a dangerous job in London. He sees a chance to reconnect with his nephew, so he dives back into the life he left behind. However, during a mission, Aiden soon comes across evidence that another hacker has beaten him to the punch, a hacker we later learn is Wrench. The two don’t have a solid start, but the narrative intertwines the pair’s experience so they are both playable, which makes their continued growth believable and enjoyable. From Aiden chasing Wrench through an infiltrated building to Wrench looking out for Aiden’s safety when the danger hits a little too close to home, Bloodline delivered a robust story in a way that Legion did not. Aiden and Wrench’s chemistry is more than just how they interact, it involves how their skills and abilities play off of each other. For example, Aiden’s Focus, which allows him to slow time to line up the perfect shot, is the perfect antithesis to Wrench’s Ninja Balls secondary ability, which essentially means he can throw flashbangs. Aiden represents balance and responsibility, whereas Wrench is an ironic blend of shy-chaos and freedom. That chemistry made their interactions engaging and important, it also made progressing through each mission a joy just to see how they continued to interact. I appreciate getting to see the older versions of characters from the previous games. For example, Jackson has grown up since meeting him in the first game, and his reunion with Aiden makes it immediately evident that he has paved his own way into adulthood away from the tragedy of his sister’s death and his mother’s kidnapping in Watch Dogs 1. Jackson’s fight against everything Aiden represents, everything Aiden wants to offer also provides a heartbreakingly human connection that means more than just the paycheck at the end of a mission. As a result, Bloodline gives Aiden a meaningful redemptive arc and much-needed closure, helping him confront the guilt that comes with the choices he made in the first game. Bloodline offers 12 main storyline missions and side quests, and the entire DLC can be completed within six to eight hours. It pares down Legion’s large playspace, focusing on a more contained section of London in order to deliver a set of new streamlined quests. And don’t worry about remembering to do the side quests or not: During Bloodline, you’ll have to meander off to do the lower priority missions before progressing in the main story, so there is no way to forget to do the additional quests. Stealth and patience remain at the epicenter of the action with Legion’s gear mechanics. Most of the tools in Aiden and Wrench’s belts should be familiar to Watch Dogs fans, like Aiden’s Gunslinger ability that buffs his damage and Wrench’s beloved Shredder Senpai LMG. Both Aiden and Wrench’s weapons and abilities have received a few modifications, including Wrench’s cloaking technology and his mission to steal a device called the Broca Bridge from Thomas Rempart, CEO of Rempart Automated Defense Systems. Aiden’s System Crash also elevates his hacking abilities, which are helpful during recon missions, especially his Profiler weapon; a tool that allows Aiden to hack into anything connected to the Blume Corporation’s ct0S such as personal information, data files, and more. The Profiler has some upgrades, including more ways to jam communications, provide distractions, and command rolling blackouts. The Bloodline upgrades were enjoyable and made strategizing during certain infiltration missions more efficient and feel more well thought out – even if I caused an accidental blackout a time or two by selecting the wrong option in the selection wheel. Upgrading these dual protagonists is doable through the main mission and side storylines, though don’t expect any wild character and gear advancement as seen with Legion’s characters. Bloodline is a story-focused DLC that continues Legion’s narrative, therefore the overall game mechanics are the same as the base game. For those jumping right into Bloodline without first diving into Legion, Ubisoft does an efficient job acquainting players with the game’s basic controls and how maneuvering through this world works. The simplification of character progression allows players to return to Legion to take on the Bloodline story without feeling weighed down by an additional drudging grind. Massively scaled upgrade paths are largely unnecessary since both of these protagonists are already established and powerful from the previous games. Overall, the latest DLC for Legion offers satisfying closure for both Aiden and Wrench. This story DLC shows players how much each protagonist has grown since their time in their respective games. The growth of both characters is abundantly clear through the Bloodline storyline and how both leading characters react to the world around them. If you’re a fan of the previous Watch Dogs games, Bloodline is a must-play. I’d even go so far as to say I enjoyed it more than Legion. CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 / AMD Ryzen 5 1600. Google's parent Alphabet unveiled a new "moonshot" project to develop software for robotics which could be used in a wide range of industries. The new unit, dubbed Intrinsic, will "become an independent Alphabet company," and seek industrial partners to advance their work helping to make everything from solar panels to cars, the new unit's chief, Wendy Tan-White, said in a blog post. "Intrinsic is working to unlock the creative and economic potential of industrial robotics for millions more businesses, entrepreneurs, and developers," she said. "We're developing software tools designed to make industrial robots ... easier to use, less costly and more flexible, so that more people can use them to make new products, businesses and services." Intrinsic emerged from Alphabet X, the so-called "moonshot" project that launched self-driving car division Waymo and life sciences group Verily. "We are currently looking for partners in the automotive, electronics, and health care industries who are already using industrial robotics and want to learn together," said Tan-White, who founded the website-building platform Moonfruit. Intrinsic also may help "support a shift towards a more sustainable and equitable way" of manufacturing by facilitating low-cost production, she said. "Currently just 10 countries manufacture 70 percent of the world's goods," she said. "This means most things are made far away from their end consumers, which drives global transport emissions, and many countries and businesses miss out on economic opportunities."

It looks like the AMD Ryzen 7 5800H doesn't have much to worry about yet. Based on early benchmarks spotted by hardware leaker Tum_Apisak, Intel's upcoming 12th Generation Alder Lake processors will have a strong rival in AMD's current mobile Ryzen 5000 (Cezanne) chips. The benchmarks come from UserBenchmark and Geekbench 5. We recommend you take the results with a grain of salt as they haven't been confirmed by Intel. In addition, the users performed the tests on Windows 10 that probably affected Alder Lake's performance. Windows 11 is rumored to arrived with an improved scheduler to properly support Alder Lake. The two Alder Lake chips in question emerged inside HP devices with DDR5 SO-DIMM memory, pointing to them belonging to the mobile Alder Lake-P lineup. The devices from the UserBenchmark and Geekbench 5 entries are labeled "HP 89C0" and "HP 896D." The first may be a test platform, while the latter likely corresponds to one of HP's EliteBook laptops. A coreboot patch from last year exposed the potential configurations for Alder Lake-P processors. Thus far, we've seen up to six unique setups with different combinations of Golden Cove and Gracemont CPU cores. Unless Intel introduces more configurations on top of the already known, the entry-level Alder Lake-P part should start at two Golden Cove cores, with the flagship chip maxing out at 14 cores (six Golden Cove, eight Gracemont). The Alder Lake-P chip from the Geekbenck 5 submission features 14 cores, 20 threads and 24MB of L3 cache. Since we suspect that only the Golden Cove cores have Hyper-Threading, this particular sample should sport six Golden Cove cores and eight Gracemont cores. Geekbench detected a 945 MHz base clock speed and 4,253 MHz boost but is likely misreporting the values, so we wouldn't pay much attention to those figures. Paired with 16GB of DDR5-4800 SO-DIMM RAM, the 14-core Alder Lake-P processors put up single-and multi-core results of 1,258 points and 6,831 points, respectively. For comparison, the average Geekbench 5 scores for the AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, which rocks eight Zen 3 cores with simultaneous multithreading (SMT), are 1,338 points in the single-core test and 7,063 points in the multi-core test. Based on these numbers, the Ryzen 7 5800H is up to 6% faster than the Alder Lake-P chip in single-threaded performance and 3% in multi-threaded performance. http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/LGg8NFSUHgTVavDguqMkHG.jpg The second Alder Lake-P, which comes from a UserBenchmark submission, is equipped with eight cores and 12 threads. There could be two possible configurations. We could be looking at two Golden Cove cores with eight accompanying Gracemont cores or an even split. For the benchmark, the octa-core Alder Lake-P processor resided on a platform with two Hynix HMCG66MEBSA092N DDR5-4800 SO-DIMM RAM modules. If you trust UserBenchmark, the Alder Lake-P system reportedly scored 160 points in the single-core benchmark and 773 points in the octa-core benchmark. UserBenchmark has the Ryzen 7 5800H at 133 points and 898 points in the single-and octa-core benchmarks. Based on these numbers, the Alder Lake-P sample offers up to 20% higher single-core performance, but the Ryzen 7 5800H outperforms the Intel chip by up to 16% in multi-core workloads. Intel is expected to unleash Alder Lake in late 2021 or early 2022. Details are still scant, so it's unclear if the chipmaker will release the desktop version to compete with our Best CPUs list, start with the mobile version or release both simultaneously.

Officials at ZooTampa at Lowry Park said the baby was born to a 20-year-old rhino named Alake last week. ZooTampa welcomed a baby southern white rhino to the family. The calf was born during the overnight hours of Sunday, June 6, 2021. The female calf and her mom, 20 -year-old Alake, an experienced mother, are doing well. Both mama and baby "are doing well," the zoo said in its announcement. "The baby rhino appears to be strong and is nursing alongside her mother." "This birth marks the 8th southern white rhino calf born at ZooTampa. Alake was paired with male Ongava through the Species Survival Plans (SSP) overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) ensure the survival of these protected species," the zoo explained. The calf, who hasn't been named yet, will join the rest of the crash in the upcoming weeks (a "crash" is the term for a group of rhinos), and guests will be able to see her at the Expedition Wild Africa exhibit when it opens. TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida zoo announced the birth of a southern white rhino, the eighth to be born in Tampa as part of a plan to help the species. Officials at ZooTampa at Lowry Park said the baby was born to a 20-year-old rhino named Alake last week. The female calf has not been named yet, but both baby and mother are healthy and doing well. “The baby rhino appears to be strong and is nursing alongside her mother,” the zoo said in a statement posted on its Facebook page Saturday. Alake was paired with the only adult male in the Tampa zoo, Ongava. Their calf will join the crash, or group of rhinos, in the coming weeks, zoo officials said. Visitors will be able to see the baby rhino in the new Expedition Wild Africa attraction, set to open soon. The zoo says the white rhino po[CENSORED]tion had dropped in the early 20th century to between 50 and 200, but conservation efforts made the po[CENSORED]tion increase to 20,400 in Africa. White rhinos are still classified as near-threatened because of habitat loss and poaching for their horns. Southern white rhinos are the second-largest land mammal on Earth, according to the World Wildlife Fund, and were nearly extinct by the end of the 1800s. Thanks to conservation efforts, they are now classified as Near Threatened, making them the only one of the five rhino species that are not endangered, according to the WWF. PEOPLE

Broncos have starting reaching reservation holders, and now Ford is opening three more Bronco Off-Roadeo locations in Nevada, Utah, and New Hampshire. Ford is launching an off-road school for Bronco and Bronco Sport owners this year, and registration goes live today at the first of four planned locations. They're free for some Bronco Sport owners and those with pre-orders for the Bronco, but anyone can sign up. Since Bronco buyers still don't have their Broncos, this gives order holders the chance to drive one ahead of the day when they finally get their own. Ford is adding three new Bronco Off-Roadeo programs in Moab, Utah, Mt. Potosi, Nevada, and Gilford, New Hampshire, the latter of which will be closed during winter months. Reservations are open now, and the schools will start August 16. The absolute best off-roading adventures, at present and for the past 40-odd years, are hosted by Land Rover and Jeep. These two brands have created epic trips that we can't stop talking about. Now Ford wants to be known for the same thing. All Bronco and Bronco Sport owners are eligible for a free class at Ford's Bronco Off-Roadeo, a 4x4 school opening this month in a wild bronco zone of Texas. It works like the Land Rover Experience in Vermont and North Carolina or the newly founded Jeep Adventure Academy in more than a dozen locales: You show up, get fed, learn valuable driving skills, make friends, get scared, and bash up a truck that's not your own. Ford has run a Raptor Assault program for F-150 Raptor owners, but the Bronco schools are different animals. CarandDriver News

Being inscribed on the Unesco list of World Heritage Sites is an elusive honor, which has been awarded to less than 900 places around the globe. But the number of places to which this recognition has been withdrawn is still much smaller: only two to which this Wednesday the English city of Liverpool joined them. The decision was made this Wednesday during a meeting of a Unesco committee in China, in a secret vote in which there were 13 votes in favor of the decision, 5 against and 2 invalid. With this ruling, the English port city joins the Sanctuary of the Arab Oryx in Oman, which lost that status in 2007; and to the Elbe Valley in Dresden, Germany, which suffered the same fate in 2009. The decision responds to the fact that the committee considered that urban developments in Liverpool threaten the value of the city's waterfront and that these, including the future Everton FC football stadium, had led to a "serious deterioration" of the historic site. Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson called the decision "incomprehensible." "Our world heritage has never been in better condition, as it has benefited from the investment of hundreds of millions of pounds in dozens of buildings as well as in public spaces," he said. Anderson announced that he will work with the government to assess whether the city will appeal the decision that he questioned came "a decade after UNESCO last visited the city to see it with its own eyes." The British government also expressed "deep disappointment" at the decision, noting that it believed Liverpool deserves its World Heritage status "given the significant role that its historic port and city have played throughout history." However, a report published in June by the UNESCO Heritage Committee noted that developments on the city's waterfront had resulted in an "irreversible loss of attributes." History and modernity Liverpool was declared a World Heritage Site in 2004. This designation specifically encompassed six sectors of the city's historic center as well as its port area, and was in recognition of the fact that the city was one of the nerve centers of world maritime trade during the 18th and 19th centuries; and the place where innovative port management technologies and methods were created. Wayne Colquhoun, who for 15 years campaigned for that recognition for Liverpool, said on Wednesday he was "devastated" by the decision. "That is a status symbol that has put us there next to the Great Wall of China and the pyramids and now it has disappeared," he lamented. Liverpool has undergone many changes since it received that recognition in 2004. Since then, for example, the city built the largest open shopping center in the UK and the plan of the local football club, Everton FC, to build a huge and multi-million dollar stadium in the city's waterfront. Claire Hamilton, a reporter for the BBC in Liverpool, explains that some critical voices emphasize that the benefits of being considered a World Heritage Site were never well explained and that city authorities showed no interest in responding to UNESCO's concerns until that it was too late. At the same time, Hamilton indicates, in some sectors of Liverpool there is the feeling that the city does not need to be on the Unesco list and they point out that tourists do not go there because of it, but for other attractions such as knowing the place of origin. about the Beatles, football, food and history. They are a series of attributes that, they consider, will remain there even if they are not recognized by UNESCO. BBC World News

House Republicans balked at participating in the House committee that's investigating the January 6 insurrection on Wednesday after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected two of the five Republicans House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy had tapped for the panel. Pelosi's decision to reject the two Republicans -- and McCarthy's response to pull the rest his members -- injected new fuel into the partisan fight over the select committee that's been raging since Democrats created the panel last month to investigate the circumstances surrounding the January 6 attack on the Capitol. The committee will still have Republican representation from one member: Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump who was one of Pelosi's eight choices to serve on the committee. Cheney's participation keeps the committee bipartisan even without anyone appointed by McCarthy. Still, Pelosi's move to reject Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana gives House Republicans an avenue to attack the select committee as a partisan endeavor. McCarthy slammed the move shortly after it was announced Wednesday. "Unless Speaker Pelosi reverses course and seats all five Republican nominees, Republicans will not be party to their sham process and will instead pursue our own investigation of the facts," McCarthy said. At a news conference Wednesday, McCarthy accused Pelosi of an "egregious abuse of power." "Pelosi has broken this institution," he said. One senior GOP source argued that Pelosi's move was a "gift" to Republicans because they never wanted to take part and, if they were on the committee, would be forced to confront complicated questions over Trump's role in January 6 But the lack of Republicans appointed by McCarthy on the panel means there will no longer be allies of Trump when the committee holds high-profile hearings on the January 6 attack. Next week's hearing with four officers on the frontlines of January 6 is not being delayed, spokesman Drew Hammill told CNN. Cheney issued a statement Wednesday on the steps of the Capitol defending Pelosi and criticizing McCarthy for earlier objecting to the creation of a bipartisan independent commission to investigate the insurrection. She suggested that Jordan could be a "material" witness to the investigation. "I agree with what the speaker has done," Cheney said. She added: "At every opportunity, the minority leader has attempted to prevent the American people from understanding what happened, to block this investigation. ... I am absolutely dedicated and committed to making sure this investigation holds those accountable who did this and ensures that it never happens again." Pelosi said in a statement Wednesday she was vetoing the appointments of Jordan and Banks. Both are allies of Trump and had objected to the certification of the November 2020 election in the House on January 6. McCarthy had selected Banks, the chairman of the Republican Study Committee, to be the top Republican on the panel. "With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these Members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan to the Select Committee," Pelosi said. "The unprecedented nature of January 6th demands this unprecedented decision." Pelosi said she approved of the appointments of Reps. Rodney Davis of Illinois, Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota and Troy Nehls of Texas. Banks, Jordan and Nehls all objected to the certification of the 2020 presidential election. Jordan has been a loyal ally of Trump and an attack dog in Congress, who was added to the House Intelligence Committee in 2019 ahead of the committee's public impeachment hearings. "Speaker Pelosi just admitted the obvious, that the January 6th Select Committee is nothing more than a partisan political charade," Jordan said in a statement Wednesday. Since his appointment, Jordan had been voicing his concerns that the committee was going to be too focused on Trump and even telegraphed targeting Pelosi as the investigation wore on. "There's one fundamental question that I hope Democrats will actually answer and address and that is why wasn't there a proper security presence that day? And frankly, only the speaker can answer that question, so let's see if the Democrats bring that up," Jordan said Tuesday. Democrats on the select committee defended Pelosi's decision, saying McCarthy could still appoint members who would take the investigation seriously. Rep. Jamie Raskin, a select committee member, pulled up to reporters the statement that Banks released Monday after McCarthy named him to the panel, which said that the committee was created "solely to malign conservatives and justify the left's authoritarian agenda." "The speaker is making clear we're going to have a serious comprehensive investigation. This will not be just another run-of-the-mill, partisan food fight," Raskin said. House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, a California Democrat and another select committee member, said Banks and Jordan "were clearly selected just to be disruptive, and that's not acceptable." Shortly after announcing she would reject Jordan and Banks, Pelosi rejected any concerns about House Republicans pulling out select committee. "We have a bipartisan quorum. We can proceed," Pelosi said. Pelosi did not explain why she accepted Nehls but not Jordan and Banks — all of whom voted to overturn electoral results. "That was not the criterion, as I told you yesterday," Pelosi told CNN. Earlier this week, Pelosi told CNN that whether an individual voted to certify the election would not determine if she approved them for the committee. "Let me be clear, how people voted on affirming the election of Joe Biden is not a criterion for service. That doesn't matter," Pelosi said. But she wouldn't elaborate on what she is weighing in her decision-making. In announcing her rejection of Banks and Jordan, Pelosi mentioned there were "objections" with their selections but did not specify what those objections were. Based on how the committee was created, Pelosi is able to appoint eight members to the commission and McCarthy has five slots "in consultation" with Pelosi -- meaning the speaker had the option to veto his selections. Pelosi moved forward with the select committee last month after her effort to create an bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 attack was blocked by Senate Republicans. In the House, 35 Republicans voted in favor of the independent commission, but only two, Cheney and Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, voted in favor of the select committee. CNN

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is one of the most divisive entries in Nintendo's acclaimed series. As the first full-fledged Zelda game designed for the Wii, the title made extensive use of the Wii Remote, eschewing the series' traditional control scheme for controversial motion controls. A decade later, Nintendo has remastered Skyward Sword for the Switch, and while many of the game's original faults remain intact, a variety of welcome tweaks make it easier to appreciate now. As with the Wii U remasters of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, Nintendo has made numerous quality-of-life improvements to Skyward Sword. These tweaks are largely minor but have an appreciable effect on the game's playability. Some previously mandatory tutorials are now optional, for instance, and you can speed up dialogue and skip cutscenes, making the game's languid opening moments much breezier. More substantial are the adjustments to Fi, the spirit who dwells within your sword. Like Navi and Midna in previous Zelda games, Fi serves as your companion for most of the adventure in Skyward Sword, frequently interjecting to relay story information and other hints. Her constant interruptions made her one of the most grating aspects of the original game, especially as the "insights" she offered were often glaringly obvious. That has largely been rectified here, and while she still speaks frequently in Skyward Sword HD, much of her dialogue is now optional, which makes her less bothersome and improves the game's overall pacing. The biggest change in Skyward Sword HD, however, is the addition of button-only controls. This new control scheme can be toggled on or off at any point from the options menu and allows you to play the game without motion controls. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that well. Because so many aspects of the game were designed around the increased range of movements that motion controls afforded, the button controls feel like a cumbersome workaround. Most of the actions you would normally perform using gestures have been mapped to the right stick, which means the button-only scheme is dramatically different from the controls in other Zelda games. Rather than swinging your sword with a press of a button, for instance, slashes are performed by flicking the right stick in different directions, and you need to hold the right stick forward and press the ZR button to throw a bomb overhead. As a result, even simple actions feel more convoluted to execute. The camera also becomes more cumbersome to control while using the button-only scheme. When motion controls are enabled, you can freely adjust the camera using the right stick--a marked improvement over the original game, as the Wii lacked dual analog sticks. However, because the button-only scheme maps Link's sword arm to the right stick, you need to hold the L button down in order to swing the camera around with said stick (or rely on pressing the ZL button to constantly recenter the camera behind Link the old-fashioned way). It isn't nearly as intuitive, and you'll frequently find yourself inadvertently slashing with your sword when you intend to rotate the camera. That's not to say the button-only controls are entirely worse, however. Some items and actions actually benefit from the new control scheme. Maneuvering the Beetle, an insect-shaped drone that you acquire early on in the adventure, is handled via the left stick rather than by turning the Joy-Con, making it easier to pilot with button controls. Swimming underwater similarly works better, as you maneuver Link with the left stick rather than by moving the Joy-Con. On the whole, however, the button-only controls don't feel nearly as natural to use, and they're a less-than-ideal alternative to the motion controls. Fortunately, the motion controls largely function well. Whether or not they are improved over the original game, as Nintendo has claimed in trailers, is debatable; I couldn't personally notice an appreciable difference from my time with the game. That said, the motion controls are responsive, and I never encountered any significant issues when performing Link's actions. Slashing with the sword by swinging the Joy-Con feels intuitive and fun, and aiming with the controller's gyroscope is much snappier than with the control stick. You will, however, need to frequently reset the pointer while you play--something I don't recall ever having an issue with in the original game. Fortunately, that can be done quickly and easily with a press of the Y button, so it never becomes a significant problem. These nips and tucks help smooth over Skyward Sword's rougher edges and improve the overall experience, but the core game is fundamentally unchanged--which means its original faults remain intact. More than other Zelda titles, Skyward Sword suffered from bloat, and that holds true in this remaster. There are many moments in the story where you'll be asked to revisit a previous area in order to retrieve a particular item or perform some other task before you can progress, and these always feel like busywork meant to prolong your adventure. Worse are the tear hunts, which require you to collect 15 sacred tears while avoiding invincible foes that can take you out in a single strike. Should one of these enemies catch you, you'll need to restart the entire trial from the beginning and reobtain any tears you had previously collected. This steep penalty makes these tasks much more frustrating than the tear hunts in Twilight Princess, and they would have been more bearable had Nintendo reduced the number of tears you had to collect, as it did in Twilight Princess HD. Unfortunately, Skyward Sword's tear hunts are unchanged, and they're among the worst aspects of the game. Despite these flaws, Skyward Sword is also filled with many genuinely magical moments. The soundtrack, notable for being Zelda's first fully orchestrated score, is still delightful, and the story is one of the most touching tales the series has ever woven, shedding light on the origins of Hyrule and other elements that have become hallmarks of the franchise. The game's dungeons are a highlight, as well, filled with clever puzzles that test your observation and lateral thinking. After Breath of the Wild excised classic-style dungeons, Skyward Sword's feel especially fresh and satisfying to explore, and the boss battles that await within are among the most fun encounters in the series. These elements outweigh the game's flaws and make it a worthwhile adventure. The various quality-of-life tweaks that Nintendo has implemented here, welcome as they are, don't fix Skyward Sword's biggest issues, and it remains the most uneven 3D entry in the Zelda series. Even so, the improvements in this Switch remaster make the overall experience more enjoyable, and the characteristic Zelda magic ultimately outshines the game's faults. A Twitter user has found and made public a Windows 10/11 vulnerability that exposes admin passwords to local users who can then escalate their privileges up to admin, giving them total system access. As he notes on his posts, he found that Windows Security Account Manager (SAM) data could be read by users with very limited privileges, giving them access to admin passwords. Microsoft apparently caught wind of the vulnerability and posted an Executive Summary of the issue on its Security Vulnerability page. The news of a new vulnerability in the Windows operating system is not good for Microsoft, coming just weeks after warnings about the PrintNightmare vulnerability in Windows Print Spooler. Microsoft says this new vulnerability is a result of inadequate protection of access control lists on several system files, which include the SAM database. They further note that an unauthorized person could use the vulnerability to run custom code that takes advantage of higher system privileges and could add, change or delete user data. They conclude by noting that unauthorized users would need to have the ability to run code on such systems to be able to take advantage of the vulnerability. Others on Twitter and elsewhere have noted the vulnerability exists only for systems running build 1809 of Windows 10 and some versions of Windows 11. They note also that in addition to allowing access to SAM data, the vulnerability also allows access to certain system and security files. For a nefarious person to take advantage of the vulnerability, the system must have a VSS shadow copy of the system drive. This copy may exist on user systems due to inadvertent actions they may have taken, such as installing a hard drive that holds more than 128GB and then conducting a Windows update. Adding an installer package file format called MSI will do so, as well. Users who want to know if their system has the vulnerability can run the system command vssadmin. Microsoft notes that they will update customers as they learn more. No timeline for a patch has yet been announced.

Our GPU price index tracks all the best graphics cards and the latest additions to our GPU benchmarks hierarchy. We're (manually) scraping eBay's historical data to get details on what sort of prices people are paying for GPUs. Thanks to the drop in Ethereum mining profitability and China's crackdown on large-scale mining operations, GPU prices continue to trend downward, though the rate of decline is decreasing. It's not all good news, either (maybe). The total number of units sold for the various GPUs decreased on nearly every GPU, the exceptions being the RTX 3060 Ti and RX 6700 XT. But modest increases for those two can't offset the reduced numbers everywhere else, and compared to the start of the month in our last update, about 700 fewer cards were sold on eBay. But maybe that just means the profitability of trying to scalp on eBay has dropped, and that's why unit sales are down? After all, Best Buy did in-person store sales at a lot of locations earlier this week. We update this article on a bi-weekly basis (or at least try to do it twice per month), to check on the latest pricing trends. We're only looking at the latest generation graphics cards now, meaning Nvidia Ampere and AMD Big Navi. We've checked eBay's sold auctions, filtering for junk data and confining results to actual real GPUs (as much as possible). Some junk listings may slip through, but we're mostly looking at the overall trends. Here's how things looked for the past two weeks in mid-July. Graphics Card Avg eBay Price GeForce RTX 3090 $2,483 GeForce RTX 3080 Ti $1,886 GeForce RTX 3080 $1,636 GeForce RTX 3070 Ti $1,096 GeForce RTX 3070 $1,063 GeForce RTX 3060 Ti $981 GeForce RTX 3060 12GB $718 Radeon RX 6900 XT $1,496 Radeon RX 6800 XT $1,253 Radeon RX 6800 $1,038 Radeon RX 6700 XT $726 All of the GPUs averaged lower prices during the past two weeks than in the previous period, but in most cases the difference was relatively small — the average decrease in price was 3.6%. Interestingly, the two cards that showed the greatest decline in prices also happen to be the cards that showed increases in number of GPUs sold. The RTX 3060 Ti average price was down 9.3%, falling below $1,000 for the first time in ages, and the RX 6700 XT price dropped 5.6%. If you don't care about ray tracing or DLSS, the RX 6700 XT remains by far the best bang for the buck, as it generally outperforms the 3060 Ti while costing over $250 less. As we've noted before, using eBay for this price tracking does have a lot of caveats. The fact that Nvidia has now released LHR (Lite Hash Rate) versions of all GPUs other than the RTX 3090 (and discontinued the non-LHR models), combined with the drop in mining profitability, means miners are unlikely to pay exorbitant prices. Which means everyone trying to turn a profit on eBay might end up disappointed. Let's hope so, though the scalpers appear to have moved on to Steam Deck pre-orders now. The RTX 3070 Ti pricing in particular stands out as a bit odd. We weren't massively impressed with the performance, efficiency, and price, but it's still a faster card than the RTX 3070 — for gaming, anyway. The fact that it averaged only 3% higher prices on eBay suggests the people buying GPUs are still primarly motivated by mining. That would also explain the $600 price premium for the 3090 over the 3080 Ti, as it's barely faster in games buy nearly doubles the Ethereum hashing speed. With the now lower prices, the average markup across all GPUs has slipped below 2.0x (it's 1.9x), but AMD's GPUs are still clearly the better buy in terms of value. Nvidia's RTX 3080 and RTX 3060 Ti remain the worst deals, at least when comparing eBay pricing to MSRPs. Actually, about half of the Nvidia cards are still over twice the MSRP, while none of the AMD cards are more than twice the MSRP. AMD also sold a larger portion of the eBay pot this round, 14.8% of the total compared to 12.6% for the last update. Clearly, there's still a long way to go before we're back to normal pricing, and we can only recommend potential buyers continue to wait. We could probably condone paying 20% more than MSRP, for people that really want to upgrade or need a new GPU, but paying 50% to 150% above the MSRP is simply too much, even if the MSRPs are red herrings.

When I first played King’s new mobile release Crash Bandicoot: On the Run, I was reminded ad nauseam of Subway Surfer and Temple Run. I was, of course, thrilled about Crash in an endless runner format, because with his jumping, spinning, and sliding, he fits right into the model. You can tap to spin, swipe up to jump, swipe down to slide, and swipe sideways to switch lanes. On the Run has new levels that you have to clear, and each level comes with its own set of challenges. Each level has boss battles that you must clear to move on to the next one. But to enter each boss battle, on your base island, at the ‘Nitro Lab’, you will have to create bombs and serums to be able to fight the next super enemy. You won’t always have the ingredients needed for making the bombs and serums. One option is to purchase those ingredients, and the other is to explore different islands using the Map. You can collect gems, fruits and other ingredients on the islands. There are also some additional challenges on each island, but I haven’t unlocked all of those so far. Pro tip: If you want a true endless runner experience, then you can pick new locations on the Map, which lets you run as long as you can, while picking up different ingredients on the way. The challenge runs are not as endless as you’d like and quickly come to an end with a final battle. When you begin a run, after a few levels, you also have the option to pick from different costumes for Crash. On the Run also has a mode named Survival Runs, which lets you team up with two other people and for a group run. Similar to Candy Crush, there is a leaderboard here as well. The more trophies you collect during the run, the higher you are on the leaderboard. However, you can only attempt a limited number of Survival Runs in a day. Things I would change about Crash Bandicoot: On the Run Time to time, the game requires data downloads of 300-350 MB at the time of launching the app. So, if a user does not have a Wi-Fi connection or has a limited data plan, the downloads may keep users from coming back to the game. The game runs up to 342 MB of downloads each time you launch the app. I would also make the game a little more challenging. Crash Bandicoot: On the Run is fun no doubt, but it’s too easy. The boss battles and challenges around them should keep you on the edge of your seat, but instead, they are an easy combination of run, swipe, spin, dodge, and just tap to kill the monster. Not once was I defeated in these challenges; not because I am that good, but because the game kind of completes the challenge for you. The game may not challenge you, but it will keep you entertained At the end of the day, though, I still like to unwind with this game. More than a ‘run’, the game lets you leisurely potter and spin around different islands. It may not challenge you like Crash Bandicoot on a console, but the game will definitely keep you hooked. Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! Latest version in development: (Beta April 22, 2020) Platforms: Android, iOS Release date: March 25, 2021 Genre : Action, Platformer
