Microsoft has revealed that the cloud-based version of its Microsoft Office suite, Microsoft 365, will be ported to a single desktop and mobile application. The move, announced(opens in new tab) at the company’s annual Ignite event, will put an end to the Office.com web portal from November 2022, with the existing Microsoft Office apps on desktop and mobile being phased out in January 2023. The move will affect all Microsoft 365 users across enterprise, education and personal subscription packages. New Microsoft 365 features Microsoft was quick to clear up any misconceptions about the change, confirming that Microsoft Office will continue to exist as a standalone product that users can choose to purchase outright. Existing users won’t even have to lift a finger, as the existing Office applications will update to the new app automatically, and users will keep their account configurations. While the move to a single application seems to be purely to keep Microsoft’s cloud office software offerings well-organized for users, it also used the announcement to tease a raft of new features that will be coming to the existing Microsoft 365 apps before being ported over. For example, Microsoft 365 now offers the My Content hub - a central location for all content created by or shared with an individual - to all users. The feature was previously only available to business customers. A custom tagging system has also been made available for business users, allowing them to organize content as they see fit, while a new feed will recommend content based on factors like who they work with and what they commonly work on together. Many of these features are fundamentals unlikely to break ground. A feed for content recommendations, and the My Content hub, for example, are variations of functionality already available as part of Google Workspace. With the new Microsoft 365 app, the company has sidestepped the problem of encouraging users to adopt the new way of accessing the service, by simply removing all the old ones. It’s a smart business move, sure to clear up any confusion still out there about what Microsoft 365 is and can do for all kinds of users. Whether the app really will be more convenient than the current offerings remains to be seen. "TechRadar"

With Intel rolling out its flagship 13th Gen Core Raptor Lake processors today, memory makers are eager to get their fastest most premium DDR5 kits into the headlines. The likes of Corsair, G.Skill, and Team Group have already started boasting about kits with speeds up to DDR5-7800. Below are summaries of the new memory kits each firm has prepared to try and tempt Raptor Lake early adopters, presented in alphabetical order. A summary table featuring the newly announced DDR5 modules / kits is provided near the bottom of this article. Corsair(opens in new tab) today announced “a range of new high-frequency DDR5 kits specifically designed for Intel’s new Z790 motherboards.” Those jumping on the 13th Gen Intel platform have a trio of new 32GB (2x 16GB) Dominator Platinum RGB memory kits to choose from. There are 32GB kits with headline speeds of DDR5-7000, DDR5-7200, and, for the first time from Corsair, DDR5-7600 to choose from. If you are a fan of Corsair memory but not inclined to splash out on the top-end Dominator Platinum RGB memory kits, the PC components maker says it will be introducing the same speed choices in its Vengeance DDR5 and Vengeance RGB DDR5 "later in 2022." Corsair also took the opportunity to boast about its PSUs and AIO coolers, and their suitability for pairing with the new Raptor Lake chips. G.Skill G.Skill provided details of three kits; its speediest offering of a DDR5-7800 at CL38 32GB (2x 16GB) kit, a ready-to-overclock DDR5-7600 at CL36 32GB (2x 16GB) kit, and a high-capacity DDR5-7400 64GB (2x32GB) memory kit. In addition to the Trident Z5 family memory kits outlined above, the performance PC components specialist revealed that it is working on "a blistering, ultra-fast DDR5-8000 [CL38] 2x16GB memory kit" that is a work in progress, for the time being. TeamGroup TeamGroup was excited to tell us about its T-Force Delta RGB DDR5-7600 memory kits created for, and validated on, Intel 13th-Gen Raptor Lake and Z790 motherboards. The 2023 Jeep Avenger is the brand's first fully electric model, and today it debuted at the Paris auto show. Unfortunately for fans of the adorably rugged little EV SUV, Jeep will not be offering the subcompact Avenger in America. Jeep also revealed the Avenger 4x4 concept that features blue front tow hooks, wider fenders, and chunkier tires. Don't worry, all you EV-loving Jeep fans who live in America. The company won't sell the 2023 Jeep Avenger—its first fully electric model—in the U.S., but the electron-fueled Recon and tentatively titled Wagoneer S will fill that void when they both eventually arrive on our shores in 2024. While we wait, let's take a closer look at the Avenger, which today made its debut at the Paris auto show. The Jeep Avenger has been on our radar for a while now. We caught our first glimpse of it back in March when Jeep's parent company, Stellantis, announced its future EV plans. A lot was said, but what really caught our attention was the image of the chunky, yellow model that accurately previewed the Avenger's appearance. Then, early last month, Jeep revealed details about the upcoming Recon and Wagoneer S as well as the Avenger's official name, its production design, and that it wouldn't be sold in America. Womp. Jeep Avenger, Assemble! The Avenger's small dimensions are well-suited for Europe. It's considerably smaller than the already stubby Jeep Renegade—about a half-foot shorter, actually. Jeep says the Avenger is about 4.1 meters long, which equals about 161 inches, and it rides on 18-inch wheels. Thanks to short overhangs, the tiny ute has a 20-degree approach angle and a 32-degree departure angle. It also has about 7.9 inches of ground clearance. Jeep says it even has hill-descent control and skid plates. Of course, we doubt many Avenger drivers will try to tackle truly treacherous terrain. At the Avenger's core is a 400-volt electrical system that pairs with a single electric motor powering the front wheels; a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive 4xe model is reportedly coming, too. Oddly enough, there will also be a gas engine option available at launch, but it'll only be offered in Italy and Spain. Regardless, the front-drive Avenger EV has 154 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. Its electric motor draws power from a lithium-ion battery pack with a gross capacity of 54.0 kWh. The Jeep's DC fast-charging speed tops out at 100 kW, and that's said to take the battery from 20 to 80 percent in approximately 24 minutes. Cockpit and Really Cool 4x4 Concept Inside, the Avenger's cabin features a clean dashboard design that's highlighted by a body-color panel that connects the front pillars and includes integrated air vents. Along with a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the driver faces either a 7.0- or 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster. There's also a parcel shelf bisecting the dash that provides a perfect place to store small items. The front of the center console has a unique foldable magnetic cover, and the space it protects has a wireless charging pad and can hold a 1.5-liter bottle. Need to store bigger stuff? The rear cargo area will swallow 13 cubic feet of junk. While a tiny electric Jeep is cool, especially one that looks like the Avenger, we weren't too bent out of shape about its forbidden-fruit status—at least not until we saw the rad Avenger 4x4 concept that Jeep also revealed at the Paris auto show. It features wider fenders and a wider track as well as chunkier tires. There's also additional front lighting and a unique hood with a black decal and a blue-trimmed vent that ties in with the other blue accents on the front tow hooks. We're told the 4x4 concept improves on the regular Avenger's off-road attributes with more ground clearance and slightly steeper approach and departure angles. Needless to say, now we are a little bummed it's not coming to our shores. The 2023 Jeep Avenger will be built at Stellantis's factory in Tychy, Poland, and it's slated to arrive in European showrooms early next year. "CarandDriver"

During a December 2019 Oval Office interview with then-President Donald Trump, Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward asked whether his bellicose rhetoric toward North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had been intended to drive Kim to the negotiating table. “No. No. It was designed for whatever reason, it was designed. Who knows? Instinctively. Let’s talk instinct, okay?” Trump said. “Because it’s really about you don’t know what’s going to happen. But it was very rough rhetoric. The roughest.” Trump then instructed his aides to show Woodward his photos with Kim at the DMZ. “This is me and him. That’s the line, right? Then I walked over the line. Pretty cool. You know? Pretty cool. Right?” the president said. Trump’s take on his relationship with Kim – and his admission that he didn’t have a broader strategy behind the threats he made about having a “much bigger” nuclear button – are part of a new audiobook that Woodward is releasing. Titled, “The Trump Tapes,” the book contains the 20 interviews Woodward conducted with Trump from 2016 through 2020. CNN obtained a copy of the audiobook ahead of its October 25 release, which includes more than eight hours of the journalist’s raw interviews with Trump interspersed with Woodward’s commentary. The interviews offer unvarnished insights into the former president’s worldview and are the most extensive recordings of Trump speaking about his presidency — including explaining his rationale for meeting Kim, his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Trump’s detailed views of the US nuclear arsenal. The audio also shows how Trump decided to share with Woodward the letters Kim wrote to him – the letters that helped spark the DOJ investigation into classified documents Trump took to Mar-a-Lago. “And don’t say I gave them to you, okay?” Trump told Woodward. Woodward said in the book’s introduction that he is releasing the recordings in part because “hearing Trump speak is a completely different experience to reading the transcripts or listening to snatches of interviews on television or the internet.” He describes Trump as “raw, profane, divisive and deceptive. His language is often retaliatory.” “Yet, you will also hear him engaging and entertaining, laughing, ever the host. He is trying to win me over, sell his presidency to me. The full-time salesman,” Woodward said. “I wanted to put as much of Trump’s voice, his own words, out there for the historical record and so people could hear and judge and make their own assessments.” Most of the interviews were conducted for Woodward’s second Trump book, “Rage,” which revealed that Trump told Woodward on February 7, 2020, that Covid-19 was “deadly stuff” but still downplayed it publicly. While the blockbuster revelations were published in Woodward’s book, the audio clips of the interviews are a stark reminder of how Trump acted as president and provide a candid look into Trump’s thinking and motivations as he gears up for another potential run for the White House in 2024. In the interviews, Trump shares his views about the strongmen he admires – including Kim, Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan – and reveals his overarching conviction that he’s the smartest person in the room. In a June 2020 interview, which followed the nationwide protests over George Floyd, Woodward asked Trump whether he had help writing his speech in which Trump declared himself the “president of law and order.” “I get, I get people. They come up with ideas. But the ideas are mine, Bob. The ideas are mine,” Trump told Woodward in a June 2020 interview. “Want to know something? Everything is mine. You know, everything. Every part of it.” The 20 interviews contained in the audiobook begin in March 2016, when Woodward and his then-Washington Post colleague Robert Costa interviewed Trump while he was a presidential candidate. The rest of the interviews were conducted in 2019 and 2020. "CNN"

When Xi Jinping came to power a decade ago, China had just overtaken Japan to become the world’s second largest economy. It has grown at a phenomenal pace since then. With an average annual growth rate of 6.7% since 2012, China has seen one of the fastest sustained expansions for a major economy in history. In 2021, its GDP hit nearly $18 trillion, constituting 18.4% of the global economy, according to the World Bank. China’s rapid technological advances have also made it a strategic threat to the United States and its allies. It’s steadily pushing American rivals out of long-held leadership positions in sectors ranging from 5G technology to artificial intelligence. Until recently, some economists were predicting that China would become the world’s biggest economy by 2030, unseating the United States. Now, the situation looks much less promising. As Xi prepares for his second decade in power, he faces mounting economic challenges, including an unhappy middle-class. If he is not able to bring the economy back on track, China faces slowing innovation and productivity, along with rising social discontent. “For 30 years, China was on a path that gave people great hope,” said Doug Guthrie, the director of China Initiatives at Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management, adding that the country is “in deep trouble right now.” Economic slowdown and rare dissent While Xi is one of the most powerful leaders China and its ruling Communist Party have seen, some experts say that he can’t claim credit for the country’s astonishing progress. “Xi’s leadership is not causal for China’s economic rise,” said Sonja Opper, a professor at Bocconi University in Italy who studies China’s economy. “Xi was able to capitalize on an ongoing entrepreneurial movement and rapid development of a private [sector] economy prior leaders had unleashed,” she added. Rather, in recent years, Xi’s policies have caused some massive headaches in China. A sweeping crackdown by Beijing on the country’s private sector, that began in late 2020, and its unwavering commitment to a zero-Covid policy, have hit the economy and job market hard. “If anything, Xi’s leadership may have dampened some of the country’s growth dynamic,” Opper said. More than $1 trillion has been wiped off the market value of Alibaba and Tencent — the crown jewels of China’s tech industry — over the last two years. Sales growth in the sector has slowed, and tens of thousands of employees have been laid off, leading to record youth unemployment. The property sector has also been bludgeoned, hitting some of the country’s biggest home developers. The collapse in real estate — which accounts for as much as 30% of GDP — has triggered widespread and rare dissent among the middle class. Thousands of angry homebuyers refused to pay their mortgages on stalled projects, fueling fears of systemic financial risks and forcing authorities to pressure banks and developers to defuse the unrest. That wasn’t the only demonstration of discontent this year. In July, Chinese authorities violently dispersed a peaceful protest by hundreds of depositors, who were demanding their life savings back from rural banks that had frozen millions of dollars worth of deposits. The banking scandal not only threatened the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of customers but also highlighted the deteriorating financial health of China’s smaller banks. “Many middle-class people are disappointed in the recent economic performance and disillusioned with Xi’s rule,” said David Dollar, a senior fellow in the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution. According to analysts, the vulnerabilities in the financial system are a result of the country’s unfettered debt-fuelled expansion in the previous decade, and the model needs to change. “China’s growth during Xi’s decade in power is attributable mainly to the general economic approach adopted by his predecessors, which focused on rapid expansion through investment, manufacturing, and trade,” said Neil Thomas, a senior analyst for China and Northeast Asia at Eurasia Group. “But this model had reached a point of significantly diminishing returns and was increasing economic inequality, financial debt, and environmental damage,” he said. A new model is needed While Xi is trying to change that model, he is not going about it the right way, experts said, and is risking the future of China’s businesses with tighter state controls. The 69-year old leader launched his crackdown to rein in the “disorderly” private businesses that were growing too powerful. He also wants to redistribute wealth in the society, under his “common prosperity” goal. Xi hopes for a “new normal,” where consumption and services become more important drivers of expansion than investments and exports. But, so far, these measures have pushed the Chinese economy into one of its worst economic crises in four decades. "CNN"

AMD has announced the immediate availability of version 2.1 of its po[CENSORED]r FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) algorithm on GPUOpen, bringing an even bigger knife to the fight against Nvidia's proprietary DLSS technology. Version 2.1 of FSR delivers a number of performance and visual quality improvements to the FSR 2.0 package, with improvements to some of its more glaring issues, such as ghosting and shimmering - artifacts of temporal-based solutions that look at previous frames in order to reconstruct the ones that come after. The new update is already being distributed in the latest version of "Farming Simulator," released early this week - and AMD shared a couple of screenshots that showcase the differences in implementation. The improvements to ghosting - one of the more prevalent issues in the new age of temporal supersampling - are readily apparent. FSR 2.0 vs FSR 2.1 in Farming Simulator 2022 AMD comparison images for FSR 2.1 There are a number of changes under the hood, but all of them appear to deal with increased stability of temporal images, less artifacting and even improved image quality - specifically, the release notes indicate that AMD has turned some half-precision computations to full precision ones. By itself, this change has the potential to reduce performance, but AMD didn't mention any performance reduction as part of the new update, so it's likely other areas saw performance improvements that could outweigh the penalty. Remember that in graphics technology, image quality improvements always impact the performance equation. Quashing some bugs, as AMD also says it did, could be a way to recoup more performance still. AMD is clearly committed to its FSR support, which saw a relative defeat in its first iteration when compared to the more mature and computationally-heavy DLSS. But AMD has persevered, and its continuous improvements to the algorithm showcase that it's up to the task of maintaining its software solutions - especially amidst the expected competition from Intel, which is gearing ever closer to releasing its Arc Alchemist graphics cards with their own upscaling algorithm, XeSS (Xe Super Sampling). AMD's release includes an update to its FSR 2 Unreal engine plugins - an extremely welcome tool for Unreal Engine developers to streamline their FSR integration. According to AMD, changes from FSR 2.0 to 2.1 should be easy for game developers to implement - a potential boon for the 45 available or upcoming games that make use of AMD's open-source and vendor agnostic upscale technology. Intel is set to start sales of its 13th Generation Core 'Raptor Lake' processors on October 20, but an enthusiast from Hungary has managed to procure his 24-core Core i9-13900KF over a week ahead of the global availability date. As spotted by VideoCardz, a member of Overclock.net forums named Jeges laid his hands on the Intel Core i9-13900KF (24-core CPU with unlocked multiplier and disabled integrated GPU) on October 11 and has been playing with the part since then. Jeges posted an image of the processor's retail package, which suggests that it was bought early from a friendly retailer, or works for a retailer/reseller and borrowed it from the stock. In both cases this means that Intel has already shipped its next-generation CPUs to resellers and retailers, in preparation for the impending release. While Jeges does not seem to be a journalist or analyst under NDA (non disclosure agreement) and therefore can share benchmark results, he did not share any solid performance numbers about the part, except a screenshot from an unfinished 10-minutes Cinebench R23 benchmark with a 40,255 points score. It seems that Jeges' Core i9-13900KF processor has a peak all-core frequency of 5.50 GHz at a 292W CPU package power and at up to 85 degrees Celsius when working on MSI's Z690 Unify-X motherboard, cooled using Arctic's LiquidFreezer II 360 all-in-one cooler. The CPU can also seemingly hit a 5.70 GHz – 5.80 GHz turbo clock, which is in line with leaked specification of the part. Meanwhile, the enthusiast increased Intel's load line calibration by +25 mV for extra stability. With only a week until the official launch we don't have too long to wait for official benchmarks to appear. "Tom's Hardware"

The Department of Justice suspects former President Donald Trump still possesses documents that he took from the White House, people familiar with the matter told NBC News on Friday. The department's top counterintelligence official, Jay Bratt, recently communicated that concern to Trump's lawyers, the sources said. The New York Times reported Thursday that the department believed Trump had not returned all of the documents he took from the White House. This was also confirmed by The Wall Street Journal. The revelation leaves some key questions unanswered, including whether the department has concrete evidence that Trump still holds classified material or it's just a suspicion based on inferences, such as the empty envelopes with classified markings that were seized at Mar-a-Lago or information from the National Archives that it's still missing documents from Trump's presidency. Various court filings from the department have suggested that some presidential records are still missing. In a September filing opposing U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon’s ruling barring the Justice Department from accessing documents seized at Mar-a-Lago, the department complained that her ruling “appears to bar the FBI and DOJ from further reviewing the records to discern any patterns in the types of records that were retained, which could lead to identification of other records still missing.” The Justice Department has also pointed to the empty envelopes marked classified that the FBI seized at Mar-a-Lago as evidence some documents could be missing. The Times reported that Trump’s lawyers were split on how to respond to the Justice Departments questions about any further records in the former president's possession, with one faction, led by attorney Chris Kise, suggesting they hire a forensic accounting firm to search for additional documents. Other lawyers talked Trump out of that idea, the Times reported. NBC News has not independently confirmed the reported disagreement. Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich said in statement Friday that the "weaponized Department of Justice and the politicized FBI are spending millions and millions of American tax dollar to perpetuate witch hunt after witch hunt." Other former presidents had moved "millions of pages of documents," he said, adding, "The document hoax is just that, a hoax and a charade." "President Trump is being unjustly, illegally, and unconstitutionally targeted because he won’t stop fighting to restore power back to the people," he continued. Meanwhile, Trump filed an emergency request Tuesday asking the Supreme Court to intervene in the case and allow a special master to review classified documents federal agents seized from Trump’s Florida estate. The request came in response to a ruling by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Sept. 21 that said the Justice Department could resume using classified documents taken from Mar-a-Lago in its criminal investigation, but barred the special master from reviewing them. That part of the federal appeals court's decision “impairs substantially the ongoing, time-sensitive work of the special master,” Trump’s lawyers wrote. “Moreover, any limit on the comprehensive and transparent review of materials seized in the extraordinary raid of a president’s home erodes public confidence in our system of justice.” The National Archives informed the House Oversight and Reform Committee last week that some records from the Trump White House had still not been turned over in compliance with the Presidential Records Act. Several days after the FBI searched Trump’s Florida property, a receipt of recovered items showed that agents found a trove of top-secret and other highly classified documents. Federal agents removed 11 sets of classified documents, some of which were labeled secret and top secret. "NBC"

The refreshed model sees price increases of between $1700 and $2900 depending on trim level, and the new X-Line and X-Pro options add even more to the bottom line. Pricing for the 2023 Kia Telluride starts at $37,025 and ranges up to $54,120. X-Line and X-Pro packages are new to the lineup, with the latter adding all-terrain tires and a higher tow rating. The updated models will start arriving at dealerships this month, Kia says. The Kia Telluride's refresh for the 2023 model year brings new features, fresh styling, and additional trim levels, but the updated SUV's increased pricing means it's not quite the amazing bargain it once was. The starting price for the base LX model rises $2300 to $37,025, and some trim levels are up by as much as $2900 compared with last year. Several versions of the three-row crossover now top $50,000, including the off-road-oriented X-Pro that's new for 2023. The X-Pro upgrade, which costs $2395, is available only for the all-wheel-drive SX and SX-Prestige trim levels. It adds 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires and increases the tow rating to 5500 pounds. The X-Pro also includes the increased ground clearance and styling tweaks of the more appearance-minded X-Line package that costs $2195 on the EX and $1395 on the SX and SX-Prestige. Front-wheel drive is standard on all versions of the Telluride except for the $51,725 SX-Prestige, which comes with AWD. The S starts at $38,925, the EX at $42,625, and the SX at $46,825. All-wheel drive is a $2000 option on these trims. A 291-hp 3.8-liter V-6 and eight-speed automatic transmission remain standard across the board. New standard features for 2023 include a larger infotainment screen, a digital gauge cluster, and additional driver-assistance features. Kia says the 2023 Telluride will start arriving at dealerships this month. "CarandDriver"

A huge explosion rocked a strategically important bridge linking Russia and the Crimea peninsula early Saturday, bringing down sections of road and causing fuel tanker wagons to catch fire on a train. A day after President Vladimir Putin celebrated his 70th birthday, the Kerch bridge which has been a crucial symbol of his illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, was partially destroyed by the blast which was caused by a truck being “blown up,” Russia’s Investigative Committee said in a statement. This “resulted in the ignition of seven fuel tanks of a train heading towards the Crimean Peninsula,” the statement said, adding that two sections of road bridge had partially collapsed, but that the arch spanning the Kerch Strait, the waterway through which ships travel between the Black Sea and Azov Sea, was not damaged. Images of the bridge posted on social media appeared to show a portion of the roadway had fallen into the water underneath and flames and smoke could be seen rising from rail cars above. Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian governor of Crimea, later said on social media that the road bridge was still intact in one direction, although traffic was suspended while the damage was assessed. In a later statement, he said that repair work would begin immediately. Putin has instructed the government to create a state commission to investigate the incident, the Interfax news agency reported, citing Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. Asked about how long the bridge would take to repair, he said there were “no forecasts yet.” Without directly claiming responsibility for the explosion Ukrainian officials have been posting gleeful messages to social media about the blast. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said it was just “the beginning” in a post on his Twitter account. “Everything illegal must be destroyed, everything that is stolen must be returned to Ukraine, everything occupied by Russia must be expelled,” he wrote. The Security Service of Ukraine meanwhile, said the bridge “beautifully burns,” in a Telegram post. Russian lawmakers voiced their displeasure at the explosion on the bridge that was opened with great fanfare by Putin in May 2018, four years after the Russian annexation of Crimea. Taking the wheel of a truck, he led a convoy of vehicles across it. "NBC"
